Laptop Lock Buying Guide: 5 Things You Need to Know

If you're running a business, writing papers in your dorm room or writing the next great novel at the local coffee shop, your laptop is at risk of being stolen. You can purchase remote-wiping software, such as LoJack for Laptops that you can use to erase all your data the next time the thief connects to the internet. However, the best way to stop a thief cold is by using a lock to physically secure your laptop to an immovable object, like your desk.

Literally chaining your laptop to your desk seems like an extreme measure, but the cost of losing your device and the data on it could be more than worth the hassle. Here are five questions to ask before you buy.

1. Where Do You Use It?

If your computer rarely leaves your home and the house itself has good security, you may not want to bother with a laptop lock. However, if you're storing your machine in a place where a lot of people have access to it, you'd really benefit from a lock.

kensington travel lock

Any place where a lot of people congregate can be a danger, but businesses and schools pose particular risks. According to Kensington, a leading manufacturer of computer locks and security slots, 40 percent of laptops are stolen in private offices. Rob Humphrey, director of global product management for Kensington's security division, said that college dorms are another hotspot for notebook theft, thanks to all the open doors and people coming in and out.

2. What Kind of Data Is on It?

If you don't have any important personal or business data on your computer, you may not need a laptop lock too badly. But unless the computer stores everything in the cloud (as, for example, a Chromebook does) or is used by a 5-year-old, chances are that the machine has or priceless business information, or valuable personal data that an identity thief could use against you.

Whether you work for an enterprise or as an individual, the cost of having a laptop you use for work stolen is far greater than just the value of the hardware itself. Many hackers target corporate laptops so they can steal intellectual property such as company reports and customer data. According to a 2014 report from cloud security company Bitglass, 68 percent of all health care data breaches result from stolen or lost devices, not network intruders.

With more companies adopting "bring your own device" (BYOD) policies, an employee or contractor's personal laptop could be the source of a data breach. When some laptops were stolen from Coca-Cola in 2013, the company exposed the names and personal information of 74,000 employees and contractors to identity thieves. For data-security reasons alone, companies should provide their employees and contractors with laptop locks they can use at their desks in the office. Some companies give their employees cabinets where they can lock up devices after hours, but that doesn't protect laptops during the workday, and it requires workers to waste time reconnecting their notebooks to power outlets and docks every time they take the machines out of the cabinets.

3. Do You Have a Good Anchor Point?

Even the best laptop lock is useless if you don't have a strong anchor point such as a desk or a cubicle wall to connect it to. Many professional desks have grommets you can thread a lock cable through. If your furniture doesn't have a hole that's the appropriate size and location, you can buy a $15 to $20 attachable anchor that glues onto a table or snaps between the seams of an office partition.

kensington travel lock

You want to attach the laptop lock to something large and stable. Though it's always possible that a very determined thief could cut through the cable with a wire cutter or yank the lock so hard that it breaks a piece of the laptop off with it, most criminals are looking to grab something quickly, without spending a lot of time or making a lot of noise breaking locks.

A real surveillance video on YouTube shows a thief smashing a glass door to break into a Chicago pizza restaurant. The thief then tries to grab an iPad off of the counter, but gives up after 10 seconds of trying to yank the device off of its lock cord. According to Kensington, the lock in the video is one of the company's "ClickSafe" models , which are designed to snap into place in seconds.

4. What Kind of Lock Slot Does Your Laptop Have?

Most laptops have some kind of security slot built into their chassis. Locks can connect to this opening, which makes it hard for a thief to pull them out. There are three kinds of slots, and you need to buy a lock that matches.

Most laptop companies use the Kensington Security Slot, a 22-year-old standard that's nearly ubiquitous in the PC industry. In fact, the slot is so common that manufacturers sometimes refer to it as a "lock slot," without mentioning the Kensington name. A handful of thin laptops, including Lenovo's Ideapad 310S/510S, ThinkPad X1 Tablet and Flex 3 laptops use the company's new Mini Security Slot to save space.

However, a few Dell laptops, including the Latitude 14 7000 , Precision M3800 and entire XPS line, use a different slot design which comes from Noble Locks, a company that specializes in physical security products for computers. Apple doesn't put lock slots on its MacBooks, but a number of enterprising accessory makers have designed locks that attach to the Apple laptops' rubber feet or clamp tight onto the lid.

Three types of Laptop Lock Slot

If you don't have a Dell laptop and your notebook has a lock slot, it's almost certainly a Kensington Security Slot. However, if you have a very thin laptop, particularly a Lenovo, it is possible you have the new Mini Security Slot. Locks that work with the mini slots are backward-compatible with the regular slots, but regular locks can't fit into the Mini Security Slots. To be on the safe side, check your instruction manual or the support info on the manufacturer's website.

5. Which Lock Do You Need?

If your laptop is one of the majority that has a built-in Kensington Security Slot, you can choose from several different lock brands. Kensington itself makes dozens of different models that are compatible with the company's slots, ranging from simple key and combination locks to units that have master keys and codes.

Kensington Keyed and Combo Locks

Humphrey said that IT departments particularly like keyed locks with master keys that IT managers can use to lock or unlock any unit. Kensington offers a service called Register & Retrieve , which allows businesses to keep detailed records of all their locks and order replacement keys.

Kensington Register and Retrieve

Several other companies also make locks that fit the standard Kensington slots, including Targus and Belkin. However, we haven't yet seen any Kensington Mini Security Slot-compatible locks from third parties.

Noble-compatible locks are available from Dell, Amazon or Noblelocks.com. Dell sells a key-driven version of the lock for $37.99.

Noble Wedge Lock

Your dock could also hold your lock. Lenovo sells a couple of ThinkPad docking stations, including the $269 Ultra Dock, which have built-in locks that prevent you from ejecting the laptop. The dock itself has a Kensington slot that secures to your anchor point.

Lenovo Dock with Lock

If you own a MacBook or another laptop that doesn't have a built-in lock slot, you can buy a slot on a plate that superglues onto the lid, like Kensington's $12.99 Security Slot Adapter kit  and then use a standard Kensington lock.

Maclocks' $49.95 Blade lock system sticks to the bottom of your Apple notebook and has its own set of rubber feet that keep the add-on from scraping your table. When you want to lock up your MacBook, a small arm flips out that you can attach a lock to. After you detach from the lock, you can fold the arm back into its compartment, much like a switchblade.

Maclocks Blade

The Bottom Line

If your device is a brand-new $1,500 Ultrabook, a sub-$300 Chromebook or even an old clunker, you need to protect it, because it probably stores some important personal information. If your laptop is in an office, at school or sitting at the coffee shop, you should physically secure the machine if you plan to walk away even for a moment. Laptop locks provide an inexpensive, convenient and effective way to protect both your hardware and your most valuable private information from thieves.

HP Notebook PCs - Using a Kensington lock

A Kensington lock is a security device that attaches a cable from a computer to a stationary object such as table.

It is similar to a bicycle lock that attaches a bicycle securely to a railing. This security device deters the potential casual theft of a notebook, or other device, in public areas such as cafes, airports, and school libraries.

Most notebooks manufactured since 2000 have a Kensington slot, or K-slot, somewhere on the case. One end of the security cable has a lock that attaches to this K-slot with either a keyed lock or a combination padlock. The other end of the cable can be looped around a table leg or other heavy object to keep the notebook in place.

Identifying the Kensington lock

Use a Kensington lock

To secure the computer, in a public environment, such as a café, airport, or library, wrap one end of the security cable around a heavy, immobile object. Insert the lock into the Kensington slot on the computer and secure the lock with its key or its combination.

Types of Kensington locks

Kensington provides different lines of locks for different needs.

Where a student, working in a library, might need one level of security, a person who travels frequently or an IT manager responsible for hundreds of pieces of equipment might need more security. In general, there are two basic lock types: combination padlocks and keyed locks. With a combination lock, you must remember a sequence of numbers to unlock the security device. With a key lock, you must keep track of a set of keys that belong to the security device.

How secure are Kensington locks?

Kensington-type locks are the standard for security in the world of notebooks. Their cables are difficult to cut, and prying the lock out of the case leaves obvious signs of damage to the notebook that make it difficult for any thief to resell the computer to any reputable business or individual.

No security system is ever perfect. Never disclose the combination of your lock to people that you do not trust. Never give the keys to someone that you do not trust. Never leave a notebook unattended for long periods of time in a public place, even if you have secured it with a Kensington lock.

Two Men Sentenced to Over 13 Years Each for Gunpoint Robberies of Businesses in Kensington and the Lower Northeast Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA – United States Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero announced that Angel Fayez, 19, and Kevin Antun, a.k.a. Acquah Evans, 20, both of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, were each sentenced to 162 months in prison by the Honorable Juan R. Sanchez.

On February 6, 2024, both men plead guilty to one count of carjacking, eight counts of Hobbs Act robbery, and one count of carrying and using a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence.

Fayez and Antun were charged by indictment in March 2023 with these offenses, in connection with a series of gunpoint robberies of businesses in the Kensington and the Lower Northeast sections of Philadelphia.

According to the indictment, the defendants committed one carjacking and robbed a variety of small businesses, stealing approximately $3,613 total between November 22, 2022, and December 3, 2022. The incidents detailed are as follows:

  • On November 22, 2022, Fayez and Antun carjacked a woman at the Liberty gas station located at 3949 Kensington Avenue;
  • On November 22, 2022, Fayez and Antun robbed the Dollar General located at 1240 E. Erie Avenue;
  • On November 22, 2022, Fayez and Antun robbed the Popeyes located at 501 Adams Avenue;
  • On November 28, 2022, Fayez and Antun robbed the Texas Chicken and Burger located at 3960 Kensington Avenue;
  • On November 30, 2022, Fayez and Antun robbed the Wingstop located at 3855 Aramingo Avenue;
  • On November 30, 2022, Fayez and Antun robbed the Wingstop located at 2118 Cottman Avenue;
  • On November 30, 2022, Fayez and Antun robbed the Domino’s Pizza located at 6391 Oxford Avenue; and
  • On December 3, 2022, Fayez and Antun robbed the Popeyes located at 3541 Aramingo Avenue.

On May 29, 2024, Judge Sanchez sentenced Fayez to 162 months’ imprisonment, a five-year period of supervised release, and a $900 special assessment.

On May 30, 2024, Judge Sanchez sentenced Antun to 162 months’ imprisonment, a five-year period of supervised release, and a $900 special assessment.

"Today, two Philadelphia men were sentenced to over thirteen years in prison for terrorizing businesses in Kensington and Lower Northeast Philadelphia," said U.S. Attorney Romero. "Interfering with interstate commerce by robbing a business at gunpoint is a federal crime. The U.S. Attorney’s office, along with ATF and the Philadelphia Police Department, will continue to fight violent crime to ensure the safety and sanctity of our streets prevail."

“This crime spree was extremely violent, and the sentence sends a clear message that even young offenders with no criminal history will be held to account if they terrorize their community,” said Eric DeGree, Special Agent in Charge of the ATF Philadelphia Field Division. “The Philadelphia Carjacking Task Force has again shown their value to the people of Philadelphia, making our community a bit safer again.”

"I am grateful to see these dangerous individuals receive significant prison sentences for a crime spree that terrorized Philadelphians for almost two weeks," said Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin J. Bethel. "The collaboration between the ATF, the PPD, and the U.S. Attorney's Office demonstrates the relentless dedication our agencies have in pursuing violent criminals; and the sentences handed down sends a strong message that gun violence will not be tolerated in Philadelphia.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence, and to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone. On May 26, 2021, the department launched a violent crime reduction strategy strengthening PSN based on these core principles: fostering trust and legitimacy in our communities, supporting community-based organizations that help prevent violence from occurring in the first place, setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring the results.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Philadelphia Police Department, and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Robert E. Eckert and Special Assistant United States Attorney David Osborne.

CBP Reminds Summer Travelers to Stay ‘Travel Ready'

WASHINGTON — As summer approaches and families prepare for their international trips, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reminds the traveling public to use the agency’s official mobile applications to secure and streamline their travel and expedite their reentry into the United States.

Throughout 2023, CBP expanded use of its technology, processing over 394 million travelers at ports of entry in fiscal year 2023, a 24-percent increase over last year, and has already reached almost 100 million travelers in the first quarter of FY2024, totaling more than 527 million travelers to date using biometric facial comparison technology at entry, exit and Preclearance locations, with a match rate of more than 98 percent.

Additionally, memberships in CBP’s Trusted Traveler Programs in FY2024 has reached 14 million. For those looking to complete an interview before their summer travel, CBP currently has more than 158,000 interview appointments available within the next 90 days. Enrollment on Arrival (EoA) remains the best option to complete a GE interview. Applicants can complete their interview without an appointment and with just the entry documents they would normally carry when arriving from international locations.

CBP has also introduced a complement of mobile applications with technological enhancements to help speed up the travel process when entering the U.S. via air, land, or sea. Global Entry, for example, launched a new mobile app in September 2023 that allows members to complete their entry processing on their phones before even leaving the plane. The app can be downloaded from the Apple App store and Google Play, and is currently available for use at 47 airports, with more locations coming soon.  To date around 348,000 Global Entry users have processed their arrival using the app.

International travelers who are not Global Entry members can take advantage of the Mobile Passport Control app, which allows travelers to submit their passport and travel information in advance with a mobile device, resulting in less congestion and more efficient processing. MPC is available at 51 ports of entry, including 14 Preclearance locations and four seaports. It can be used by all U.S. citizens, U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents, B1/B2 Canadian Citizens, and returning Visa Waiver Program travelers. The app was used by 4.1 million travelers in FY2023, and has already had over 4.2 million uses in FY2024.

Non-U.S. citizens planning travel into the U.S. also have the option of using the Electronic System for Travel Authorization mobile app or the CBP One mobile app. The ESTA Mobile app was implemented June 1, 2023, and has been used almost 422,000 times to submit an ESTA application for authorization to travel to the U.S. In the first quarter of FY2024, the app has been used almost 338,000 times to apply. The CBP One™ app may also be used by visitors to the U.S. to apply and pay for the I-94 online. In FY2023, visitors used the CBP One app more than 458,000 times to complete a provisional I-94 application and almost 195,000 times in the first quarter of FY2024.

Additionally, U.S. citizens who are required to declare agriculture and biological products upon arrival into the United States may also use CBP One to provide advanced notification that they will need an agriculture inspection. Categories for declaration include:

  • Biological materials that may require permits issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
  • Pets, specifically birds and dogs, accompanying travelers in various capacities that carry the potential of introducing foreign animal diseases to the U.S. or other public health concerns
  • Cleaning and disinfection of shoes
  • Hunting trophies

All CBP applications can be downloaded free from the  Google Play Store  or  Apple App Store . For more information about CBP’s suite of mobile apps, visit Mobile Apps Directory | U.S. Customs and Border Protection (cbp.gov)

For more information on preparing to travel abroad, visit the Know Before You Go page on the CBP website .

USDOT Announces “Support Our Troops” Dashboard to Improve Air Travel for Military Service Members and Their Families

Allegiant, Frontier, and Spirit took steps to enhance their travel benefits for service members

WASHINGTON – Today, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced a new “Support Our Troops” dashboard to help U.S. military service members and their immediate family members more easily access travel benefits offered by the 10 largest U.S. airlines. The dashboard clearly displays each airlines’ commitments to service members and their immediate family as reflected in their Customer Service Plan at flightrights.gov/military , including benefits such as free carry-on and checked bags and providing refunds without additional fees when their flight plans change due to a military order or directive.

“As someone who often flew on military orders as an officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve, I know the unique pressures our service members and their families can face when traveling,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg . “Service members and their families make extraordinary commitments and sacrifices for this country, and they deserve support and recognition whenever they fly.”

Following Secretary Buttigieg’s call-to-action to airlines to improve military travel benefits, Spirit Airlines, Allegiant Air, and Frontier Airlines stepped up their existing commitments in their Customer Service Plan for service members and their families. Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue Airways, and United Airlines declined to make clear and enforceable commitments to U.S. service members and their families. Southwest Airlines has received two green checkmarks on the dashboard because of its existing baggage and change fee policies that apply to all passengers.  In making determinations on which commitments are reflected on the dashboard, DOT’s Office of Aviation Consumer Protection consulted with the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) and highlighted those commitments that the Department believes are most meaningful to service members and their families.

"Commitments for current Service Members and Families Dashboard"

The “Support Our Troops” dashboard highlights benefits that make air travel easier for U.S. service members and their immediate family members when engaging in personal travel. DOT’s dashboard gives a green checkmark to an airline for each benefit that the airline commits to provide:

  • Waives cancellation fees and ensures full refunds for service members and accompanying family members who cancel travel plans due to a military order or directive (documentation may be required).
  • Waives change fees for service members and accompanying family members who reschedule flights due to a military order or directive (documentation may be required).
  • At least one free standard carry-on and at least two free standard checked bags for service members and their accompanying spouse and children with appropriate identification such as a valid military ID.
  • The lowest fare for a flight for immediate family members to visit service members recently injured in the line of duty with supporting documentation.

DOT defines “service member” for the purpose of the “Support Our Troops” dashboard as current members of the military who are serving or may be called to serve. This definition was developed with input from DOD. At a minimum, these members include:

  • U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Marines, U.S. Space Force, U.S. Coast Guard, National Guard, and U.S. Military Reserves with a current valid military ID;
  • Cadets of the Air Force Academy, West Point, Naval Academy, Coast Guard Academy, and Merchant Marine Academy with a current valid military ID; and
  • Commissioned Corps and Ready Reserve Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service and Commissioned Officers Corps of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Officer Corps with current valid military ID.

Airlines may offer additional benefits to service members and their families. For their benefits to be reflected on the dashboard, however, airlines are required to expressly provide them to all service members as defined by DOT and make these commitments in their Customer Service Plan or make them easily accessible from their Customer Service Plan. To the extent an airline’s military benefits fall short of these requirements, the Department may not be able to hold the airline accountable for failing to honor its commitments. Members of the military are encouraged to check the airline’s website or contact the airline’s customer service agents for more information.

DOT’s Historic Record of Consumer Protection Under the Biden-Harris Administration Under the Biden-Harris Administration, DOT has advanced the largest expansion of airline passenger rights, issued the biggest fines against airlines for failing consumers, and returned more money to passengers in refunds and reimbursements than ever before in the Department’s history.

  • Last month, DOT announced two final rules that require airlines to provide automatic cash refunds to passengers when owed and protect consumers from costly surprise airline fees . These rules will significantly expand consumer protections in air travel, provide passengers an easier pathway to refunds when owed, and save consumers more than half a billion dollars every year in hidden and surprise junk fees. Provisions of the final rule on airline refund were fortified through the FAA reauthorization bill that President Biden signed into law on May 16, 2024.
  • In 2022, under Secretary Buttigieg’s guidance, DOT created an Airline Customer Service Dashboard known as FlightRights.gov to help airline passengers understand what they are entitled to receive certain services and amenities when a significant delay or cancellation was within the airlines’ control and create enforceable standards. Now all 10 major U.S. airlines guarantee free rebooking and meals, and nine guarantee hotel accommodations when an airline issue causes a significant delay or cancellation. These are new commitments the airlines added to their Customer Service Plans that DOT can legally ensure they adhere to and are displayed on flightrights.gov .
  • Since President Biden took office, DOT has helped return almost $4 billion in refunds and reimbursements owed to airline passengers – including more than $600 million refunds and reimbursements to passengers affected by the Southwest Airlines holiday meltdown in 2022.
  • DOT has issued over $164 million in penalties against airlines for consumer protection violations. Between 1996 and 2020, DOT collectively issued less than $71 million in penalties against airlines for consumer protection violations.
  •  DOT recently launched a new partnership with a bipartisan group of state attorneys general to fast-track the review of consumer complaints, hold airlines accountable, and protect the rights of the traveling public.
  •  In 2023, the flight cancellation rate in the U.S. was a record low at under 1.2% – the lowest rate of flight cancellations in over 10 years despite a record amount of air travel.
  •  DOT is undertaking its first ever industry-wide review of airline privacy practices and its first review of airline loyalty programs.

In addition to finalizing the rules to require automatic refunds and protect consumers from surprise fees, DOT is also pursuing rulemakings that would:

  • Propose to ban family seating junk fees and guarantee that parents can sit with their children for no extra charge when they fly. Before President Biden and Secretary Buttigieg pressed airlines last year, no airline committed to guaranteeing fee-free family seating. Now, four airlines guarantee fee-free family seating, as the Department is working on its family seating junk fee ban proposal.
  • Propose to make passenger compensation and amenities mandatory so that travelers are taken care of when airlines cause flight delays or cancellations.
  • Expand the rights for passengers who use wheelchairs and ensure that they can travel safely and with dignity.

DOT’s aviation consumer protection website makes it easy for travelers to understand their rights. Consumers may file an airline complaint with the Department here .

TSA at RNO and nationally prepared for busy summer season of air travel

kensington travel lock

RENO, Nevada - The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is prepared for high passenger volumes throughout the summer at airports nationwide including Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO). TSA projects it will screen a record number of people now through the Labor Day weekend.

AT RNO, TSA expects to screen about 6% more travelers this summer than last year’s summer season. During the four-day Memorial Day weekend, TSA screened about 24,000 departing passengers through the security checkpoint. This was an increase of 6.7% over 2023 Memorial Day weekend volumes.

The busiest times at the RNO checkpoint daily are 4 a.m. to 6 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The busiest days to travel any week are Sunday and Monday as well as Thursday and Friday. Regardless of your flight departure time or day of the week, this summer all travelers - no matter at what airport - will need to arrive early and prepared for every step of the air travel experience.

“The summer travel season is here and Reno is a prime destination for those who are looking to enjoy the outdoors, recreational opportunities at nearby Lake Tahoe or the area’s beautiful scenery. Whether you live in the High Eastern Sierra foothills or are just visiting, TSA will be on the job to ensure your trip through RNO is second to none,” said TSA Federal Security Director for Nevada Karen Burke. “We have been planning summer travel operations for months and are looking forward to making good on those plans to deliver top notch security in the most efficient manner.”

"RNO is preparing for a very busy summer travel season," said Nicolle Staten, Manager of Public Affairs at the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority. "Over 90,000 seats are being added this summer with our returning seasonal flights and some new routes coming soon. With this added passenger traffic, we are grateful for the enhanced security screening technologies implemented by TSA to get our passengers to their gate quickly and efficiently."

Travelers may notice that security screening procedures can vary by airport. While TSA follows strict standardized screening protocols, those procedures are dependent upon the equipment and technologies in use at any given airport. Due to these variances, it is important for travelers to listen to guidance provided by TSA officers on-site.

Below are some examples of technologies in use at RNO that travelers may encounter and how those will impact the screening process.

Signage in the security checkpoint describes the facial matching, identity verification process to travelers.

Do I need to show a boarding pass to the TSA officer? If Credential Authentication Technology (CAT) is in use at the entrance to the security checkpoint, no boarding pass is needed. Travelers will need to present only their photo ID to the TSA officer.

CAT units are designed to scan a traveler’s photo identification and confirm the traveler’s identity on-screen for the TSA officer. Through a secure Internet connection, CAT is also able to verify that the traveler is ticketed for travel that day and indicate the type of screening status (such as TSA PreCheck®) that the traveler is eligible for.

Because travelers under age 18 are not required to present photo identification to the TSA officer, anyone 17 and younger will need to show a boarding pass to gain entry into the security checkpoint.

TSA does recommend all travelers have their boarding pass available in case the TSA officer needs to manually inspect it or CAT is not in use. TSA has more than 2,000 CAT units deployed nationwide at 228 airports including RNO.

Do I have to get my picture taken when verifying my identity? It is never required that a traveler have a photo taken during the travel document checking process, but travelers departing RNO will have that option.

TSA at RNO is using the latest generation of CAT units (referred to as CAT-2) and they are equipped with a camera that captures a real-time photo of the traveler in addition to scanning their photo identification. CAT-2 is able to compare the traveler’s photo on the state-issued ID against the in-person, real-time photo. Once the unit confirms a match, a TSA officer verifies it and the traveler can proceed to security screening. TSA officers can perform additional passenger verification if needed.

A CT scanner in the security checkpoint at RNO.

Photos captured by a CAT-2 unit are never stored or used for any other purpose than immediate identity verification. Travelers who do not want to participate in the facial matching process can opt out in favor of an alternative identity verification process conducted by the TSA officer.

RNO is one of 84 airports with CAT-2 units in use.

Do I need to remove electronics larger than a cell phone and travel size liquids from my carry-on?

That will be determined by the type of X-ray scanner in use. Some airports have computed tomography (CT) X-ray scanners installed and in use at the security checkpoint. TSA at RNO has two CT scanners located in the security checkpoint.

The state-of-the-art CT scanners create a 3D image of the contents of the bag, giving the X-ray operator enhanced screening capabilities. If a CT scanner is in use, the TSA officer will advise people to leave their electronics and travel size liquids in their carry-on bags.

Some airports have X-ray units that provide traditional 2D X-ray images, which require electronics and liquids to be removed from carry-on bags to ensure the X-ray operator gets a clear view of them, ensuring they aren’t a potential security threat. There are currently 820 CT scanners in use at 236 airports nationwide.

Does my carry-on property have to go in a bin during screening? Yes, if your carry-on is screened through the CT scanner, place all items in a bin. Every CT bin is equipped with an RFID tag that allows the traveler’s personal property and the associated X-ray image to be tracked throughout the screening process.

In all other lanes, your carry-on items can be placed directly on the conveyor belt. For smaller items, please secure them in your carry-on so they don’t inadvertently get left behind.

Do I need to take off my shoes? TSA requires travelers in general screening lanes to remove their shoes during the screening process. However, travelers 12 and under as well as those 75 and older are always permitted to keep on their shoes during the security screening process.

TSA PreCheck®-eligible travelers can leave on their shoes as long as they do not alarm the security screening equipment. TSA operates dedicated TSA PreCheck lanes at RNO during some peak hours. During other times, TSA PreCheck-eligible travelers are screened through the general screening lanes, but receive the benefits of TSA PreCheck.

Can family members go through the TSA PreCheck lane with me? Any traveler 17 years old and under can accompany a TSA PreCheck-eligible parent or guardian through TSA PreCheck screening when traveling on the same reservation and when the TSA PreCheck indicator appears on their boarding pass. TSA operates a dedicated TSA PreCheck screening lane at RNO.

This benefit is another reason to join the more than 18 million people who have enrolled in TSA PreCheck. On average, 99% of TSA PreCheck-eligible travelers wait 10 minutes or less to be screened TSA PreCheck enrollment is now offered by three companies including Telos, CLEAR and Idemia.

Local travelers can enroll in TSA PreCheck at RNO in the ticketing area of the airport. There is also an enrollment center at 10350 N McCarran Boulevard. For more information and to start the enrollment process, visit www.tsa.gov/precheck . An in-person visit is required to complete enrollment in TSA PreCheck.

Final advice from TSA and RNO With 434 federalized, commercial airports nationwide, 685 security checkpoints and 2,412 security screening lanes, it can be challenging to know what to expect at any airport. Here are some tips to help all travelers have a smooth trip through the security checkpoint at any airport:

  • Arrive at the airport at least two hours before scheduled boarding time of flight. Allow ample time to park, navigate to the terminal, check luggage and proceed through the TSA security screening checkpoint. Most flights board 30-45 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time.
  • Review guidelines for traveling with children. Airlines can request proof of age documentation during check-in for children under age 12 traveling unaccompanied. Proof of age documentation must also be provided for children two years of age or younger planning to sit on an adult passenger’s lap. A birth certificate is acceptable proof of age.
  • Be prepared for any scenario. In the security checkpoint, have your photo identification and boarding pass ready just in case you are unexpectedly asked for it. This will keep you from slowing down the screening process for you and everyone behind you.
  • Listen to directions provided by TSA officers. The advisements are specific to the type of screening you will experience. The information given will make your screening experience quicker and smoother.
  • Pack smart. Always start with an empty bag to ensure you don’t inadvertently bring prohibited items to the security checkpoint. Place electronics larger than a cell phone and travel size liquids at the top of your carry-on so they can be easily accessed if you are required to remove them. Also, be sure that all liquids are 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less if transporting them through the security checkpoint.
  • Get assistance prior to traveling. Ensure that carry-ons do not contain prohibited items since they slow down the security screening process. To determine whether an item is allowed or prohibited in carry-on luggage, download the MyTSA app and use the “What Can I Bring?” feature. Another option is to snap a picture of an item and send it to @AskTSA on Twitter or Facebook Messenger for real-time assistance. Travelers can also send a question by texting “Travel” to AskTSA (275-872).
  • Double-check your luggage. Many bags look alike. Prior to traveling, passengers should tag every piece of luggage with their name and address and include additional addresses inside each bag in the event the outside tag falls off. When retrieving luggage at baggage claim, it’s important for passengers to check these tags to ensure they’ve picked up the correct bag.

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

Hackers Managed To Open 3 Million Hotel Card Locks in Just Seconds

Your next hotel room stay may not be as secure as you hope it is.

A group of security researchers who were invited to a Las Vegas hotel to identify digital security vulnerabilities discovered a technique that would enable intruders to open “millions of hotel rooms worldwide in seconds, with just two taps,” according to a new report from Wired.

The team of security researchers, who spoke with Wired, have dubbed the hotel room keycard hacking technique “Unsaflok.”

It is based on what Wired describes as “a collection of security vulnerabilities that would allow a hacker to almost instantly open several models of Saflok-brand RFID-based keycard locks sold by the Swiss lock maker Dormakaba.”

More than 3 million hotel room doors around the globe, throughout 13,000 properties in 131 countries, use these types of Saflok systems, per Wired.

Hackers are able to exploit weaknesses in keycard's encryption and underlying RFID system, the article goes on to explain.

To engage in this type of hacking, the first step is to simply obtain a keycard from a target hotel by either booking a room or taking a keycard out of a box of used key cards at the hotel.

After that, hackers read code on the card using an RFID read-write device. And then write two keycards of their own.

“When they merely tap those two cards on a lock, the first rewrites a certain piece of the lock's data, and the second opens it,” explains Wired.

“Two quick taps and we open the door,” Lennert Wouters, a researcher from  theComputer Security and Industrial Cryptography group at the KU Leuven University in Belgium, told Wired. “And that works on every door in the hotel.”

Swiss lock maker Dormakaba has been working to address this security problem, says Wired. Since last year, the company has been trying to raise awareness of the problem among hotels globally that rely upon Saflok and help to “fix or replace the vulnerable locks.”

All that’s required to remedy the problem is updating the “front desk management system” and then a technician reprograms each door’s lock throughout the hotel. Though some older locks will still require a hardware upgrade.

The process of remedying this industry challenge however, has not been moving as quickly as one might hope. Apparently only 36 percent of Safloks have been updated as of this month.

“We have worked closely with our partners to identify and implement an immediate mitigation for this vulnerability, along with a longer-term solution,” Dormakaba wrote to WIRED in a statement.“Our customers and partners all take security very seriously, and we are confident all reasonable steps will be taken to address this matter in a responsible way.”
