6 Best Fixes for Events Not Showing in Outlook Calendar on Windows 11

fix events & travel

Paurush dabbles around iOS and Mac while his close encounters are with Android and Windows. Before becoming a writer, he produced videos for brands like Mr. Phone and Digit. On weekends, he is a full-time cinephile trying to reduce his never-ending watchlist, often making it longer.

The Outlook app on your Windows 11 PC gives you access to the Calendar for planning your routine. You can add reminders for important events and appointments in the Outlook Calendar to never miss them. These include birthdays, doctor’s appointments, or sales meetings with your colleagues.

fix events & travel

But some users complain that their Outlook Calendar is not showing events and appointments on Windows 11. If you are also facing the same, here are working solutions to fix events not showing in the Outlook Calendar on Windows 11.

1. Check Your Internet Connection

Starting with the basic solution if you can’t see events after adding them to your Outlook Calendar is to check the strength of your Internet connection. The event entries in the Outlook Calendar will require good internet connectivity to sync with your account. So we suggest running a speed test and checking the same.

2. Configure Outlook Account Settings

Once your internet speed is in order, you need to configure your Outlook account settings. Since you can add multiple accounts to the Outlook app on your Windows 11 PC, you need to check whether you are using the correct email ID. Here’s how.

Step 1: Click the Start icon on Windows 11, type Outlook, and press Enter to open Microsoft Outlook.

open outlook on windows 11

Step 2: Click on File at the top-left corner.

file outlook windows 11

Step 3: Click on Account Settings.

Step 4: Click on Account Settings again.

Step 5: Check which email account you use for your Outlook Calendar.

If you use the wrong email account, you can remove it from Outlook and add the correct one.

After that, close the window and check if the problem is solved.

3. Reset Calendar View

Another reason your Outlook calendar might not show your meetings is because of the custom calendar view hiding your meetings. Here’s how you can reset your Outlook Calendar view.

Step 2: Select the Calendar from the left panel.

Step 3: Click on View at the top Menu Bar.

Step 4: Click on Current View.

4. Check Auto Archive Settings

Outlook will automatically archive all your data after specific intervals of time. If your Outlook calendar events are still not showing up on Windows 11, they may have been archived. You can check the Auto Archive settings and even turn off the feature.

Step 3: Click on Options at the bottom-left corner.

Step 4: Select Advanced from the left menu.

Step 5: Click the AutoArchive Settings button.

Step 6: Check the number of days for running AutoArchive in the background.

You can change the number of days or select the uncheck option to stop using the feature.

Step 7: Click on Ok at the bottom right side to save your preference.

5. Check Delegate Access

You can delegate access to your Outlook Calendar, let someone else plan your meetings, and make changes. But that also permits the person to remove your events from Calendar. So you need to check the Delegate Access for your Outlook Calendar on your Windows 11 PC.

Step 4: Select Delegate Access.

Step 5: Check which account has access to your Outlook Calendar. You can remove the access if you wish to.

6. Update Outlook

If none of the solutions work, we suggest updating the version of Outlook on your Windows 11 PC.

Step 3: Click on Office Account at the bottom-left corner.

Step 4: Select Update Options.

Step 5: Click on Update Now.

Step 6: If an update is available, download and install it.

Media advisory - fincen director andrea gacki to travel to arizona for beneficial ownership outreach events.

WASHINGTON – On June 11 and 12, Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) Director Andrea Gacki will travel to Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona, where she will participate in beneficial ownership reporting outreach events organized in partnership with Senator Kyrsten Sinema’s (I-AZ) office.

Under the Corporate Transparency Act—a bipartisan law enacted to curb illicit finance by supporting law enforcement efforts—many small businesses are now required to report basic information to the Federal government about the real people who ultimately own or control them. During both events, Director Gacki will meet with small business owners and other key stakeholders to discuss these new beneficial ownership reporting requirements.

Filing is quick, secure, and free of charge. It is not an annual requirement: Unless a company needs to update or correct information, it only needs to file once. FinCEN expects that most companies will be able to file without the help of an attorney or accountant, and that the filing process for those with simple ownership structures may take 20 minutes or less. Companies that existed before 2024 have until January 1, 2025 to file, while companies created or registered in 2024 must file within 90 days of receiving creation/registration notice. More information, along with FinCEN’s E-Filing System, is available at https://www.fincen.gov/boi .

Opening remarks at both events are open to press, and Director Gacki will be available for interviews.

While in Tucson, Director Gacki will also lead a counter-fentanyl information exchange, which is closed to press. FinCEN’s  Promoting Regional Outreach to Educate Communities on the Threat of Fentanyl (PROTECT) information-sharing series, held in U.S. cities that are highly impacted by the opioid epidemic, brings law enforcement agencies and financial institutions together to share typologies and approaches on combatting illicit fentanyl trafficking.

Who: Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) Director Andrea Gacki

What: Beneficial ownership outreach events in Arizona

When: Tuesday, June 11, 9:30 – 11 a.m.

Where: Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, 823 E Speedway Blvd, Tucson

When: Wednesday, June 12, 2 – 4 p.m.

Where: Phoenix College, Hacienda Conference Room (F121) Parking: North parking lot, 3100-3148 N 11th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85013

Media interested in covering this visit should RSVP to  [email protected] by 5:00 p.m. ET on Monday, June 10, to ensure they receive any relevant logistical information.

Boeing Gives F.A.A. Plan to Address Systemic Quality-Control Issues

The action plan is the latest in a series of moves by the F.A.A. to push for safety improvements throughout Boeing during a tumultuous year for the company.

Boeing’s top executives delivered a plan to improve quality and safety to the Federal Aviation Administration on Thursday, vowing to address systemic issues that have damaged the company’s reputation and put the aircraft manufacturer at the center of several federal investigations.

Boeing detailed these and other steps during a three-hour meeting with the F.A.A.’s administrator, Mike Whitaker, where the company submitted a “comprehensive action plan” that the regulator ordered in February.

Mr. Whitaker had given Boeing 90 days to develop a plan to make sweeping safety improvements after a midcabin panel known as a door plug blew out of a 737 Max 9 jet flying at about 16,000 feet on Jan. 5. No one was seriously injured during the flight.

The F.A.A. said in a statement on Thursday that “senior” leaders from the agency would “meet with Boeing weekly to review their performance metrics, progress and any challenges they’re facing in implementing the changes.”

Boeing was also required to address findings, from an expert panel convened by the F.A.A. last year, that revealed persistent issues with the company’s safety culture. Mr. Whitaker said Boeing had accepted all of the recommendations the panel made in the report.

“We need to see a strong and unwavering commitment to safety and quality that endures over time,” Mr. Whitaker said during a news conference on Thursday. “This is about systemic change, and there’s a lot of work to be done.”

In a statement, Boeing said the action plan it delivered to the F.A.A. was based on feedback it received from employees and through conversations with the regulator. Boeing provided some additional detail on the actions it was taking to improve quality but did not make the safety plan public.

In an email to employees, Stephanie Pope, the head of Boeing’s commercial plane unit and the company’s chief operating officer, said the company is investing in training, simplifying plans and processes, eliminating defects and improving quality and safety.

The company has made some changes, including expanding training for new hires to 14 weeks from 10 weeks; helping managers spend more time on the factory floor and less time in meetings; increasing inspections at Boeing and at a top supplier, and ordering more tools and equipment.

“Many of these actions are underway and our team is committed to executing on each element of the plan,” David Calhoun, Boeing’s chief executive, said in a statement. “It is through this continuous learning and improvement process that our industry has made commercial aviation the safest mode of transportation. The actions we are taking today will further strengthen that foundation.”

The company has also conducted more than 20 meetings at sites around the world, pausing work to gather employee feedback on improving quality. More than 70,000 Boeing workers have participated, providing tens of thousands of comments, the company has said.

Mr. Whitaker, who met on Thursday with Mr. Calhoun, said he planned to continue to meet weekly with Boeing to make sure the actions were executed correctly and in a timely manner. Mr. Whitaker will meet with Boeing’s chief executive in September. Mr. Calhoun has said he plans to step down at the end of the year.

There is no timeline for Boeing to carry out the changes, Mr. Whitaker said.

He also said Boeing had developed six measures by which it and the agency would be able to track the company’s progress. The F.A.A. will also maintain heightened inspections of both Boeing and Spirit AeroSystems, a supplier that makes the bodies of the 737 Max jet. Boeing has said it plans to buy Spirit to gain more control over the quality of the parts it produces for the company.

The action plan is the latest in a series of moves by the F.A.A. to push for safety improvements throughout Boeing. The regulator limited Boeing’s monthly production of 737 Max jets and audited its production lines, and is investigating the company’s compliance with federal safety standards.

Mr. Whitaker said the F.A.A. would continue to put limits on Boeing until the agency was satisfied with the company’s progress. The regulator and Boeing have not yet discussed raising the number of Max jets that Boeing can produce in a month beyond 38, he said. Boeing is making the planes at well below that rate, but has said it hopes to accelerate production in the second half of the year.

“We will not approve production increases beyond the current cap until we’re satisfied,” Mr. Whitaker said during the news conference. “Bottom line, we will continue to make sure every airplane that comes off the line is safe and reliable.”

The Justice Department has also opened a criminal investigation into the Jan. 5 episode. A preliminary investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board suggested that the Max 9 plane might have left Boeing’s factory in Renton, Wash., without the panel bolted down.

Boeing also faces potential legal repercussions from crashes involving its planes. The Justice Department said this month that Boeing had violated a 2021 settlement reached after two 737 Max plane crashes killed hundreds in 2018 and 2019, and could be prosecuted on a criminal charge of conspiracy to defraud the F.A.A.

The Justice Department found that Boeing had failed to “design, implement and enforce” a compliance and ethics program that was a condition of the settlement. The company plans to contest the department’s determination.

That 2021 settlement had been criticized for being too lenient on Boeing and for being struck without consulting the families of the 346 people killed in the Max crashes, which were in Indonesia and Ethiopia and led to the grounding of the 737 Max fleet for 20 months. An investigation determined that both crashes involved the mistaken triggering of a maneuvering system designed to help avert stalls in flight.

Boeing: A Company in Turmoil

Plan To Fix Safety Issues: Boeing’s top executives delivered  a plan to improve quality and safety to the F.A.A ., vowing to address systemic issues that have damaged the company’s reputation and put the manufacturer at the center of several federal investigations.

Settlement Violation: The Department of Justice said that Boeing was in violation of a 2021 settlement  related to problems with the company’s 737 Max model that led to two deadly plane crashes in 2018 and 2019.

A New Investigation: The F.A.A. has opened an investigation  into Boeing after the plane maker told the regulator that it might have skipped required inspections involving the wings of some 787 Dreamliners.

A Huge Loss: Boeing reported a $355 million loss  for the first three months of the year, as it deals with a quality crisis stemming from a Jan. 5 flight during which a panel blew off one of its planes.

A CEO to Fix Boeing: The plane maker, which is searching for a new chief executive, is likely to consider a small number of people , including several former Boeing executives.

Nigel Farage is the people's pick to take over from Rishi Sunak as leader of the Conservatives if Labour wins the election, according to a new poll.

The poll of 2,000 people showed 19% think Mr Farage should take over from Mr Sunak.

The poll offered six other names - Penny Mordaunt (15%), James Cleverly (6%), Kemi Badenoch (5%), Suella Braverman (4%), Priti Patel (2%) and Robert Jenrick (1%).

However, the majority of those surveyed in the poll for The Independent were stumped as to who should take the Tories' top job - 48% said they did not know who should replace Mr Sunak.

The poll also found that 45% of all voters believe Labour will win the next two elections, with just 19% disagreeing.

But the poll said 49% of those surveyed believe the main reason for a Labour victory would be because of "Tory failures".

Shadow business secretary Jonathan Reynolds denies Labour is changing so much it's turning its back on unions.

He was speaking to Sky News this morning after it emerged last night that Unite, the country's biggest union and the Labour Party's biggest donor, did not endorse its manifesto due to concerns about fire and rehire and the banning of new oil and gas licences.

Mr Reynolds says it was "legitimate" for Unite to voice concerns over jobs linked to North Sea oil, but said Labour had a plan to get the transition right and make it economically beneficial.

"North Sea oil and gas production will be a part of the country's energy mix and energy future right up until 2050," he says.

Speaking to the "pro-worker" part of the manifesto, he says: "There'll be more secure work. Flexibility will not be one-sided.

"We will make sure not only that the economy is growing more strongly, but people feel the benefits of that."

Senior Tories can already be seen vying for the top job in the party during election campaigning, shadow business secretary Jonathan Reynolds tells Sky News.

He joined us this morning and said if it wasn't for the general election, he thinks Rishi Sunak would be facing a no confidence vote from his party.

"You can see there is a leadership election already under way in the Conservative Party," he says.

That was clear when Penny Mourdant came out swinging in last night's TV debate, when she was "absolutely unequivocal" in condemning the prime minister for leaving the D-Day ceremonies early, Mr Reynolds says.

We've been speaking to Transport Secretary Mark Harper this morning.

Unsurprisingly, he is pushed on the prime minister leaving D-Day events early on Thursday.

He repeats that it was right for Rishi Sunak to apologise for his premature departure from Normandy - and that it was a mistake for him to exit in such a fashion.

Asked if this is the moment the Conservatives have "definitely lost this election", Mr Harper says: "No - I don't agree with that."

Pushed on whether the Conservatives' manifesto launch - expected next week - will save the campaign, Mr Harper says he hopes the document will "help frame the choice for people that we've already set out".

Mr Harper was also asked about the Conservatives' policy announcement today - their pledge to reverse the expansion of the Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in London.

He said the expansion was motivated by money and not air quality - adding that parts of outer London had voted against Mr Khan to register their opposition.

Mr Khan won a record third term as mayor in this year's race, beating the Conservatives' Susan Hall by a quarter of a million votes.

By  Jennifer Scott , political reporter

The Conservatives have pledged to scrap the controversial expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in London if they stay in power after the general election.

The party also promises local referendums on "aggressive" schemes like 20mph zones and Low Traffic Neighbourhoods.

The Tories said reversing the policy of London mayor Sadiq Khan would form part of a new "backing drivers bill" that would stop the "war" their rivals had "launched" on motorists.

But Labour accuses their rivals of having an "abysmal record" on drivers.

Good morning!

We're approaching the end of the second full week of the fight for all 650 parliamentary seats - and the keys to Number 10.

Political parties are spreading out across the country to get their message out ahead of polling day on 4 July.

Here's what you need to know:

  • The Tories  have pledged to scrap the ULEZ expansion in a "backing drivers bill" if they stay in power. The party also promises local referendums on "aggressive" schemes like 20mph zones and Low Traffic Neighbourhoods. They will be campaigning in the North East this morning before heading to Yorkshire in the afternoon.
  • Shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves  will be on the campaign trail for Labour in the South East while Sir Keir Starmer will be out in London;
  • The D-Day row rumbles on, as a poll finds the majority of Britons think Rishi Sunak's decision to leave commemorations before they ended was unacceptable;
  • A snap poll found Nigel Farage came out on top in last night's TV debate between leading figures from the seven main parties - while viewers thought Penny Mourdant would be a better PM than Sunak;

This morning's guests will be:

  • Transport secretary Mark Harper joined us at 7.15am;
  • Shadow business secretary Jonathan Reynolds at 8.15am;
  • SNP leader John Swinney at 11.15am;

Stick with us for all the latest political news throughout the day.

Snap findings from a More in Common poll of more than 1,000 viewers of last night's BBC debate suggest Nigel Farage came out on top.

According to the poll results , the audience is most likely to think Reform UK's leader won, with 25% picking him.

Labour's deputy leader Angela Rayner comes in second with 19%.

Just 7% thought Tory Penny Mordaunt won, but 32% believe she'd be a better prime minister than Rishi Sunak - with 12% picking him.

Full Results

  • Nigel Farage - 25%
  • Angela Rayner - 19%
  • None of the above - 14%
  • Carla Denyer - 11%
  • Stephen Flynn - 10%
  • Penny Mordaunt - 7%
  • Daisy Cooper - 5%
  • Rhun ap Iowerth - 2%
  • Don’t know - 8%

Almost half (47%) of 2019 Tory voters watching the debate thought that Mr Farage won the debate, while Ms Rayner leads among 2019 Labour and Lib Dem voters who tuned in.

The poll also shows viewers are most likely to think the SNP's Stephen Flynn (net +31), the Green Party's Carla Denyer (net +31) and the Lib Dem's Daisy Cooper (+30) did well in the debate.

Reform's original candidate for Clacton will stand as an independent against Nigel Farage in the upcoming general election.

Anthony Mack quit Reform after he was replaced by Mr Farage earlier this week to vie for the seat in Essex.

But that hasn't stopped him from trying to win there.

Mr Mack is expected to hold a press conference later today.

Olympic athletes, top musicians and an ex-soap actor are among those standing to become members of parliament at the general election.

The deadline for candidates to submit their nominations passed earlier today.

Notable names on the list include:

  • Blur drummer Dave Rowntree, Labour, Mid Sussex
  • Double Olympic gold medal rower James Cracknell, Conservative, Colchester
  • Rock star Tom Gray from the band Gomez, Labour, Brighton Pavilion
  • Former Coronation Street actor Marc Anwar, independent, Bury North
  • Gogglebox's Josh Tapper, Labour, Hertfordshire
  • Olympian Marc Jenkins, Conservative, Gower

Count Binface has announced he will stand against Rishi Sunak in his Richmond and Northallerton constituency.

Speaking on his podcast, Trash Talk, Binface said it would be like "Fury vs Usyk times a billion" in the July 4 election.

"That's right, I am here right now in Richmond and Northallerton and I can announce that I will be taking on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in electoral combat on July 4.

"You shirked D-Day Rishi, you can't miss the B-Day.

"That's right. Binface vs Sunak is going to be Fury vs Usyk times a billion. Bring it on."

Binface recently came 11th in the London Mayoral Elections, where he earned 24,260 votes.

When is Prime Day 2024?

No official date has been released yet, but Amazon did just share that the 10th annual Prime Day is slated for sometime in July. Last year, the event ran from Tuesday, July 11 to Wednesday, July 12; in 2022, it took place on Tuesday, July 12 and Wednesday, July 13. With that in mind, it’s a good idea to keep your calendar clear through the second week of July to give yourself ample time to hop on the top deals once they’re formally released.

What is Prime Day?

Prime Day is one of the biggest shopping events of the year — so much so that in 2023, Amazon even hosted similar savings events in the fall to help shoppers double their savings. In fact, last year, more than 375 million items were sold worldwide during Prime Day, with shoppers scoring more than $2.5 billion in savings, according to a press release . It’s safe to say that it’s one of the most eagerly-awaited shopping holidays, giving members and non-members alike the opportunity to stock up on essential items (and other exciting gear) at incredibly low prices.

How long will Prime Day deals last?

The event typically runs for 48 hours from the start date so shoppers have ample time to stock up on must-have items from every category on the site. However, Amazon has never shied away from dropping hidden early deals, so it’s a good idea to log on ahead of time to parse through the offerings without running the risk of things selling out. Plus, if you miss out on the savings this time around, you can trust that there will likely be another Prime Day later this year, as per last year’s shopping calendar.

What types of products go on sale for Prime Day?

The groundbreaking sale offers unbeatable prices across all departments across the site , including items from top brands in clothing, shoes, luggage, homeware, and even tech all displaying deep discounts. In the past, popular names like Samsonite , Apple , and Dr. Scholl’s have all been included in the sale — and the good news is that you can already snag some of these items at early discount prices before the event even begins.

Do you need to be an Amazon Prime member to shop Prime Day deals?

While Prime members are privy to the most significantly marked-down items across the site, other shoppers can also participate in the sale to a lesser degree. However, with wide-reaching discounts on everything you might need to successfully prepare for your next vacation, you won’t want to miss the chance to sign up to become a Prime member before the full extent of the sale is announced. Try it out now for free with a 30-day trial.

Where can I find early Prime Day deals?

As we've mentioned before, Amazon is known for its hidden early deals and savings throughout the site. Not sure where to start? We’ve already combed through pages and pages of products to find the best travel essentials you can shop right now with discounts that rival Prime Day itself. Whether you’re on the hunt for the perfect suitcase to bring along for your big European vacation this summer, or a compact tracking device in the form of an Apple AirTag , keep reading to find the best early markdowns you can shop at Amazon right now, starting at just $16.

Veterans gather for their last big D-Day anniversary under the cloud of a new war in Europe

D-Day joint operation in Normandy

CAEN, France — For almost 80 years, the United States and Europe told themselves that a lasting postwar peace had been won here, in the bloody shallows and sands along 6 miles of Normandy beach.

On Thursday — the 80th anniversary of D-Day , perhaps the last major milestone for many of the invasion’s dwindling heroes — that peace in Europe finds itself shattered .

Replacing it are fears of another world war that until recently seemed outlandish, uncertainty about Washington’s European allyship that the Normandy landings cemented, and questions about the future of the Western alliance itself.

For many, the ideals that D-Day helped win are at risk of fading along with its survivors.

“I believe that freedom and democracy are definitely under threat,” D-Day veteran Harold Terens, 100, told NBC News on Monday.

He spent that day working as a radio operator mechanic based in Yorkshire, northern England, communicating with 60 P-47 Thunderbolt fighter planes flying over France — only 30 of which returned. Twelve days later he traveled to Normandy in person to transport freshly freed American prisoners of war back to England, and pick up newly captured Germans.

“It was one of the most disgusting things I’ve seen in my life,” said Terens, who lives in Lake Worth, Florida. “Bodies without arms and legs, bodies without heads — war is hell,” he added, referencing the quote first attributed to Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman, who fought on the side of the Union during the Civil War.

Harold Terens.

More than 150,000 Allied troops landed in Nazi-occupied France on June 6, 1944, including 73,000 Americans, 60,000 British and 15,000 Canadians. It was the largest amphibious invasion in history, a meticulously planned assault that altered the course of World War II — and the 20th century.

Around 4,500 Allies died, including some 2,500 Americans, in their historic bid to loosen Nazi Germany’s grip over mainland Europe.

And so for a few weeks every year, Normandy is transformed into a festival of remembrance, with cities, villages and cemeteries festooned with flags — including many American flags flown by French locals — while playing host to concerts, parades and ceremonies.

It’s not clear how many veterans are still alive. But some 150 Americans who took part in the monthslong Battle of Normandy, including two dozen D-Day veterans, are expected to make the trip to France this year, according to the American Battle Monuments Commission, the government agency overseeing cemeteries and monuments abroad.

The centerpiece will be a ceremony attended by President Joe Biden, his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Britain’s Prince William and other world leaders. Biden will give a speech about defending freedom and democracy.

“D-Day is a critical moment for President Biden to speak to what our collective security has done to deliver mostly a peaceful Europe since the second world war,” said Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., a friend of Biden and a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. “This is a chance to demonstrate what I think President Biden has been so good at. It’s not America alone. It’s not America first, but America as a critical leader in the world and as the indispensable nation.”

Still, the stars are the veterans.

NBC News is spending part of the week traveling with a busload of 50 American vets who have been brought over by the Best Defense Foundation charity, based in California.

They are set to include Richard “Dick” Ramsey, aged 100, a coxswain aboard the USS Nevada as it fired shells into the D-Day battlefield and narrowly missed getting hit in return. Also expected on the bus is Richard Rung, 100, who ferried troops to Omaha Beach while hosing his fellow soldiers’ blood from the small landing craft.

The youngest D-Day veterans are in their 90s; for many this will be the last major milestone they see as this event begins to pass out of living memory.

For the French, the legacy of D-Day is more complex. There is the decadeslong veneration of their Allied liberators, but also lament for the 20,000 Normandy locals killed in the assault, with cities such as Caen razed to rubble.

Macron says now is the right time to acknowledge these memories. On Wednesday, the French  president is expected to emphasize this point at a ceremony in Saint-Lô, a city whose destruction in the battle was so complete that in 1946 Irish novelist Samuel Beckett named it “the Capital of Ruins,” a moniker that has become widely used since.

With questions over Washington’s long-term commitment to Europe, Macron has attempted to cast himself as a de facto leader on European security, calling for more defense spending and refusing to rule out deploying French troops to Ukraine — much to Moscow’s fury.

Veterans and world dignitaries gather in Normandy to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the landings.

It’s perhaps no surprise, then, that Russian President Vladimir Putin is not invited this year.

This presents an awkward juxtaposition for those involved. Many feel it would be untenable to include a Russian delegation while its soldiers wage unprovoked war on Ukraine, an attritional grind of tanks, troops and artillery whose scale evokes WWII itself.

At the same time, it is impossible to tell the story of Nazi defeat without the Soviet Union.

After Adolf Hitler reneged on a nonaggression pact and invaded the Soviet Union, the Red Army spent millions of lives fighting back, repelling the Nazi advance in what was a pyrrhic Soviet victory on the Eastern Front.

“It’s a very changed time,” said John M. Koenig, a veteran American career diplomat who served as ambassador to Cyprus and was posted in Belgium and Italy before retiring in 2015 . “The perception of Russia, and the way ahead, is far darker than it was back when we used to invite Vladimir Putin to the celebrations.”

“It’s a different Europe than it was,” he added. It is not “one of compromise, cooperation and common interests that we had hoped even, I would say, up until at least 10 years ago.”

Many in Europe fear that if Moscow’s aggression goes unpunished, other countries, such as the Baltic states and perhaps even Poland, could come into the Kremlin’s crosshairs.

Ukraine has been armed to the teeth by the West, receiving $50 billion of missiles, tanks and air defense systems from Washington. But many observers are nonetheless questioning the future of the Western unity.

Looming large is the American presidential election between Biden and Donald Trump, the former president and presumptive Republican nominee. Trump has previously suggested he would withdraw from NATO, and many Ukraine allies fear he could end support for its defense against Russia.

Compounding this, European Parliament elections this month look certain to herald victories for far-right and nationalist parties, some of which share Trump’s skepticism on the importance of helping Ukraine resist Russia’s invasion.

John Kelly, a retired four-star general and Trump’s longest-serving White House chief of staff, said in an interview: “People make the argument that American forces should come home. We made that mistake once after World War I.”

“Yes, our allies and partners need to do more for themselves and live up to their financial commitments,” added Kelly, who had a falling out with Trump. "But we tested isolationism once before, and it didn’t work. The rules-based world order works and if it’s going to work America must lead it.”

D-Day commemorations in France

Also testing Washington’s relationship with its historic partners is the Israel-Hamas war.

Israel faces accusations of genocide and possible arrest warrants in international court, leaving the country and its chief ally, the U.S., increasingly isolated on the global stage. They have both rejected the accusations.

Israel’s assault on the Gaza Strip has killed more than 36,000 people, according to local officials, and the Palestinian enclave needs $40 billion in postwar reconstruction — the largest since 1945 — the United Nations estimates. Meanwhile, eight decades since the Nazi murder of 6 million Jews, the deadly Oct. 7 attack and its aftermath have stirred fears of rising antisemitism in the U.S. and Europe.

And yet, amid the horror both historical and contemporary, there are shards of light here, among the hedgerows and headstones of mild-but-overcast northern France.

Terens, the D-Day radio operator, has traveled back here to get married, at the age of 100, to his 96-year-old fiancee Jeanne Swerlin.

“Love is not reserved for the young,” he said. “We need a little action ourselves.”

Terens and Swerlin on their way to France last week.

The pair met in 2021, and 40 family members have traveled over from the U.S. for their ceremony and parade June 8. Most poignant will be those not able to attend in person.

“I’m spiritual, and I came here to invite all those soldiers buried on Omaha Beach, 9,836 of them, to my wedding,” he said. “I’d like them to attend in spirit. And I want them to know that they’re not forgotten.”
