By Althea Legaspi

Althea Legaspi

Elton John has announced the final North American leg of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, which takes place in 2022.

The new dates kick off at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia on July 15th and culminate with a two-night stint at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on November 19th and 20th. Tickets go on sale on June 30th, with presale tickets available to American Express card members beginning on Wednesday at noon local time.

“Hello, all you wonderful fans out there. I’m coming to you today with an announcement I’ve been working towards for, well, all my life: The shows that I announce today will be my final tour dates ever in North America and Europe,” John said in a statement. “I’m going to go out in the biggest possible way, performing at my very best, with the most spectacular production I’ve ever had, playing in places that have meant so much to me throughout my career.”

In September, John announced makeup dates for the tour, which was postponed due to the pandemic. The rescheduled trek runs from January through April. The newly announced final dates include 30 stadium shows, with a run of performances in Europe from May to June before he heads to North America. Tickets to those dates sold out quickly but there are seats available through VividSeats.com .

John launched the  Farewell Yellow Brick Road  tour in September 2018 in  Allentown, Pennsylvania . It was originally slated to run for three years, but the pandemic forced it off the road in March 2020. Two Auckland, New Zealand, shows are also planned for January 27th and 28th, 2023, with the four-year tour concluding sometime in 2023 in Australia with a string of shows to be announced at a later date.

“Whether it’s next summer in Frankfurt or at the legendary Dodger Stadium for the grand finale in the United States, I can’t wait to see you all on the road one last time,” John added. “This has been an incredible tour so far, full of the most amazing highs, and I look forward to making more wonderful memories with you at these final shows. To all my friends down under: We’ll be seeing you, too. Thank you and I look forward to seeing you in your town.”

Elton John Announces Final North American Arena Tour Dates

Elton John has announced the final North American dates of his Yellow Brick Road Farewell Tour .

11 new shows have been added to the legendary artist's schedule, beginning on July 24 in East Rutherford, N.J. The third performance at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles also has been slated for Nov. 17. (John will also perform at the venue on Nov. 19 and 20.)

You can view a complete list of the new dates below.

"Thank you for sharing this journey with me," John said in a new video. "I cherish these memories we're making together. It has been nothing short of incredible, and I look forward to seeing you soon, one last time on my Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour."

You can watch the clip below.

John  resumed the Yellow Brick Tour in January after the shows had been on a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic. He'll now continue the tour through the U.S. for most of April before heading to Europe and the U.K. Following his appearances later this year at Dodger Stadium, he'll once again head overseas for another run of shows.

“I’m looking forward to doing it and going out on the high that we were on – we were an express train that hit the buffers," John told  NME  in October. "At the moment I finish supposedly in 2023, in the summer, by which time I’ll be 76 – and that’s it, baby. I can’t wait to do it and have a great time, and I can’t wait to finish and say, ‘No more – I’ve had enough.’”

Tickets for the upcoming shows will be available starting April 6.

Elton John begins final US dates of farewell tour with set list surprises and singalongs

PHILADELPHIA – Goodbyes can be brutal. But Elton John continues to usher out his extraordinary career  with grace and enthusiasm while ensuring fans savor a spate of highlights from his colossal catalog.

At Citizens Bank Park on Friday, a beaming John and his legendary band emerged before the sunset, and more than two hours and 23 songs later, the first date of the final U.S. leg of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour was a footnote in history.

The show also marked the launch of the stadium portion of the tour, which will wrap in Los Angeles in November before bouncing back to Europe for the concluding run. It feels like another lifetime ago that John embarked on his long and winding goodbye ; indeed, the world looked much different in 2018 when the show made its debut in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

But he’s still enticing baby boomer devotees and millennial newcomers alike, a refreshing span of ages evident among the sold-out crowd of more than 40,000.

During the encore, John noted – with a bit of humble disbelief – that he was playing a recent hit , “Cold Cold Heart,” his mashup with Dua Lipa (who appeared on video), in tandem with his first top 10 single from 1971, the truly timeless “Your Song.”

It’s a feat both admirable and exceedingly unlikely to be duplicated.

'Love' The Beatles? Consider catching their Cirque du Soleil show in Vegas while you can

Throughout the night, John, in a bejeweled white tux jacket, black pants and lavender-framed glasses, appeared refreshed and happy behind his black Yamaha grand piano. The hit parade began with the familiar plinking notes of “Bennie and the Jets” followed by “Philadelphia Freedom,” with guitarist Davey Johnstone casually unfurling the song’s jangly riff.

80 for 80: Ranking some of the best Paul McCartney songs for his birthday

John, 75, was delightfully hammy between songs, popping up from his piano bench to point and grin at the crowd while mouthing thanks and leading a concert that felt brisk but never rote.

While some songs (“I’m Still Standing,” “Tiny Dancer”) contained noticeably lower keys to suit John’s range, he mostly sounded robust, adding vocal embellishments to the end of an easy-swinging “I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues” and injecting “Someone Saved My Life Tonight” with emphatic emotion.

The highlights along this trip down sentimental street were numerous. The hazy effects on the video accompanying the ever-ethereal “Rocket Man” added a gauzy coating as the dreamy chorus segued into an elongated piano coda. “Levon,” one of the underrated beauties in John’s cache of creativity with lyricist Bernie Taupin , escalated into a gospel throwdown before weaving back into the melody. And the epic instrumental “Funeral for a Friend,” a sonic eruption that melts into “Love Lies Bleeding,” remains a master class in musicianship.

Though John’s teammates never earned a moniker a la the E Street Band, these exceptional players have been an integral part of his live shows. Many, such as dapper drummer Nigel Olsson (sporting his trademark gloves, headphones and a pink pocket square in his suit), the treasure that is percussionist Ray Cooper and the distinctive Johnstone have shared stages with the maestro since the earliest gigs.

Percussionist John Mahon, keyboardist Kim Bullard and bassist Matt Bissonette also add musical flair that prompted John to comment on how much he has relished playing with this group.

Concert review: The Weeknd tour is an apocalyptic rave

While their tautness was expected given the volume of shows they’ve played, the band also leaned into a couple of surprises in the set list.

The rollicking “All the Girls Love Alice,” from 1973’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” album, arrived for the first time this year (John did unearth the album track during many pre-pandemic farewell dates). But more unexpected was the tour debut of “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters,” John’s swoony 1972 ode to New York City that he hasn’t performed live since his 2018 Las Vegas run. It was, as always, enchanting.

As the concert crept toward its conclusion – with fans realizing the wind down of their time in John’s orbit – the musician offered sincere thanks and told the audience to “love each other” while wishing them “health, happiness and success.”

Then, as he has throughout the tour, John unwrapped “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” his delicate rumination of life in transition and the ideal summary of a career that will be forever celebrated.

Elton John preformed to over 6 million fans across 330 shows in his farewell tour.

With glitz, glam and golden confetti, Elton John performed on tour for the last time on Saturday.

The final concert was set in Stockholm, Sweden. It wrapped up the British singer's "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" tour, which spanned over five years, 330 shows and 16 Gucci suits. The tour is considered the highest-grossing in Billboard Boxscore history. Last month, it became the first tour ever to make more than $900 million.

"What a journey this tour has been and now we find ourselves at the end of it," John wrote on Instagram before the show.

The show included several of John's signature songs, including Tiny Dancer, Rocket Man and Candle in the Wind.

In heart-shaped pink sunglasses, he thanked his fans for their support throughout the decades.

"You have no idea what it means to me, your kindness. I've had the most wonderful career," he said. "How lucky am I to play music. But I wouldn't be sitting here and talking to you if it wasn't for you."

The worldwide, farewell tour kicked off in 2018, but was forced to pause in 2020 for nearly two-years due to the pandemic. Last month, the 76-year-old gave his final U.K. performance while headlining the Glastonbury Festival.

In 2021, the international pop star told NPR that he looked forward to retiring from tour so that he could spend more time with his children.

"Ten years ago, I was going to just tour and make records. And I had nothing planned for the rest of my life except making music and touring," John said. "And then we had two fabulous little boys. Elton is one of the top-selling solo artists of all time, with 1 diamond, 38 platinum or multi-platinum, and 26 gold albums, over 50 Top 40 hits, and he has sold more than 300 million records worldwide. He holds the record for the biggest-selling single of all time, “Candle in the Wind 1997”, which sold over 33 million copies. ‘Diamonds’ the Ultimate Greatest Hits album, reached the Top 5 of the UK album charts on its release in November 2017, becoming Elton’s 40th UK Top 40 album in the process. This release celebrated 50 years of his songwriting partnership with Bernie Taupin. August 2018 saw Elton named as the most successful male solo artist in Billboard Hot 100 chart history, having logged 67 entries, including nine No. 1s and 27 Top 10s.

Elton John's New Documentary ‘Never Too Late' to Debut at Toronto International Film Festival

More than a year after his farewell tour officially wrapped, Sir Elton John would like to give fans an inside look at his life on the road.

On Tuesday (June 18), the Toronto International Film Festival announced its first slate of film premieres, including the world debut of Elton John: Never Too Late . Directed by David Furnish, who is John's husband, and R.J. Cutler, the new documentary will premiere at TIFF in September alongside Amy Adams' new horror-comedy Nightbitch and Mike Flanagan's The Life of Chuck.

According to IMDb, John's new documentary will show "never-before-seen concert footage of him over the past 50 years, as well as hand-written journals and present-day footage of him and his family." A report from Deadline back in May 2022 added that the documentary will focus on John's Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, documenting his final shows in the U.S., "culminating in his November performance at Dodger Stadium in his final North American show."

John's farewell shows went on to do more than just close his touring career. During its four year run, the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour became the first in history to cross the $900 million mark, making it the highest grossing tour in history by the time it wrapped in July 2023.

Recently, John's efforts have been focused on his charitable work with the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Shortly before the start of Pride Month, the singer announced the organization's " Speak Up Sing Out " challenge, asking fans to perform a section of his classic hit "Your Song" before tagging someone who inspires them. One entrant will win an opportunity to meet John and Furnish in person.

For anyone who hoped that the Eras Tour might get an extension into its third calendar year with added dates in 2025, Taylor Swift has disabused them of that notion, affirming that her global trek really will come to a close with its currently scheduled final dates in North America in December of this year.

Swift made the proclamation while performing the 100th date of the tour on the first night of a weekend engagement in Liverpool on Thursday.

“And that feels like so far away from now,” she added. “But then again, it feels like we just played our first show on this tour. Because you have made this so much fun for us that we wanted to do a hundred shows, 150-something shows that we have on the whole tour.

“And I think that  this tour has really become my entire life. Like, it’s taken over everything. I think I once had hobbies, but I don’t know what they were anymore. Because all I do when I’m not on stage is like sit at home and try to think of clever acoustic song mashups and think about what you might want to hear.  So when I’m not on the stage, I’m dreaming about being back on the stage with you guys. And you have done so much to be with us. You’vee made plans so far in advance. You planned what you were gonna wear, you memorized lyrics, you got yourselves here, you figured out parking, you figured out transportation. … And just know that I appreciate every single ounce of effort that you put in to be with us, (as) this tour reaches triple digits of of shows.”

Although Swift’s camp has not released any box office grosses from the tour, industry experts believe the total gross will surpass $2 billion by the time it wraps up in December. The closest runner-up will remain Elton John’s “Farewell Yellow Brick Road,” which grossed $939 million over a five-year span.

Swift’s European tour will wrap up Aug. 20 with the second of two runs in London’s Wembley Stadium. From there, she is scheduled to take time off from the road before returning to U.S. stadiums in November for the first time since late 2023, doing shows in just three U.S. cities — Miami, Indianapolis and New Orleans — before the tour concludes in late November and early December with six shows in Toronto and three in Vancouver. The last date is scheduled in the latter Canadian city for Dec. 8.

Ben Platt, Jeremy Pope, Jenna Lyons and More on the Queer Art That Made Them

In the last few years , queer art has been everywhere, from streaming blockbusters like Heartstopper and The White Lotus to the chart dominance of stars like Billie Eilish and Lil Nas X. But even relatively recently, that wasn’t always the case, with art by queer creators often pushed to the margins and excluded from the wider cultural conversation. Despite—or because of—those odds, when the rare work did cut through, it had the potential to be world-shifting, a lighthouse of inspiration for generations of queer kids in the dark.

In the first of two installments, GQ talks to some of this generation’s most exciting queer creatives about the art that changed their lives, paying tribute to the generations of artists who came before and paved the way.

“They're the first people I saw fashion through. The couture collections of Mugler and Galliano were quite bombastic. That’s one of the reasons why I fell in love with fashion, specifically, for the simple reason that they managed to create collections that were not guided by merchandising or products. They were guided by the dream, the beauty, and the magic of fashion. So that is definitely something that I try to [do] as much as possible.

I remember there was one [Mugler] couture look in one of these magazines—Karen Mulder, the top Dutch model, and she was wearing this full beetle dress with feathers. I was probably younger than 12 and completely obsessed with it because she looked like a Disney villain. I was like, “Wow, this can be reality. We're not supposed to only see that in a cartoon movie.”

I remember just being like, ‘Oh, I want to feel that.’ I wasn't out at the time. I wanted to feel confident and comfortable in my body. He was a person that was just so instrumental in my life at 19. He was the first person where [a life as a Black queer person] felt accessible, and it felt tangible. And also, he had picked me to be in the show. It was like this embrace of, ‘Please, come. Please, be a part of this.’ That felt affirming in so many ways.”

“ Antonio's Girls is a book that [the artist Antonio Lopez] had, and it was a love note to all of these women that were in his life. I had grown up in California, seeing a very Baywatch version of what beauty looked like. I remember when I was in seventh grade, I got this book from my art teacher. And she's like, "You might like this guy, Antonio Lopez." And I just fell in love with his work. Through reading the book, I found these women in his life: Jerry Hall, Tina Chow, Grace Jones, Marisa Berenson. And it was special and unique because all those women were not typically beautiful in the American standards that I was seeing or being shown, whether it be in magazines or socially.

It was just a powerful thing to see at such a young age because I got excited and thought like, "Oh, there's people in the world who appreciate things that don't look like Pamela Anderson." And while I adore Pamela Anderson and think she's awesome, I couldn't be her. And I didn't have any connection to looking like that. So, it really changed everything for me in terms of a lens of beauty.

I think what I was always fascinated with was that Antonio Lopez had his women that he fed off of. And they loved each other, and he revered them. And there was this kind of respect and adoration for their uniqueness. And I think Isaac Mizrahi and Sandra Bernhard were a little bit of that, too. Where it was like he appreciated her quirk and her outspokenness and her not traditional beauty and made her look and feel beautiful. I always appreciate the things where it's not the most obvious, or you see the light in something that not everyone sees.”

“As a songwriter, in terms of writing from my own perspective, Sam Smith was really huge for me. I think for there to be a popular artist coming up when I was still in high school, who had songs like ‘Leave Your Lover’ with pronouns [like] he/him in them, and singing very specifically about queer love, was just amazing for me, and really unlocked a lot of inspiration. I very much walk in the footsteps of that beautiful album and all of their work.

Elton John, obviously, is [an inspiration] in terms of embracing loud flamboyance and queerness in a really cool, stylish, popular kind of way. He was such a trailblazer and did a lot of things first. My favorite [song of his] is ‘Take Me To The Pilot’—which I know is a slightly random one, but I sang it on my first tour and in my Radio City Music Hall special because I just love that song so much.”

“[The 1995 coming-of-age film] Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love. It was shocking and revelatory to see a movie that followed all the classic tropes of a coming-of-age love story starring two young actresses instead of a male and female. I just loved how it was unapologetically normal and conventional in its storytelling—except that it just replaced the heterosexual dynamic with a gay one or with a queer one. And that was amazing. I felt just sort of ecstatic and then I realized, ‘Oh, this is also embarrassing at the same time. Now we have to reckon with versions of ourselves on screen.’ Representation was so interesting early on because it had to stand for everything and everyone. And the luxury, of course, of being less marginalized is that you get to see many versions of who you are. And there's versions of people like you on screen that you don't like, and they don't all have to be model citizens. But those early movies, yeah, they had to represent all of us for better or worse.

But I would say that this film did a pretty good job of it. It's not two white girls, it holds up pretty well. It’s shockingly not too retrograde 30 years later.

I think what's actually great about right now is that there's so much representation that we've moved away from having to be a model minority. And so I love something like Las Culturistas with Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers, because it's both unapologetically fan-oriented and pop culture-oriented, and it's largely positive. But it's also not afraid to dissect and be critical of queer or queer-coded culture or people who are hopping on that bandwagon. It has a little bit of snark and to just make it really pleasing and fun, and it's so smart, and I'm glad that that exists. I'm glad it can just be fun and also a little less reverential.”

“I think the first time things opened up for me was when I heard Liz Phair and got her record Exile in Guyville . She sings explicitly and confidently about sex—and not just sex, but all kinds of things in a brazen way, and in a way that I was unfamiliar with. I didn't know you could talk about those kinds of things, let alone sing about them with such a stare down. It blew things up for me and felt like a companion to what I needed and what I was thinking about. When you're gay, the thing that you're taught is the most shameful part about being gay is the sexual part. At least that's how it felt to me when I was young. I've always been obsessed with music and listened to it to soothe myself and to have a mirror, a companion, or a catalyst.

I've probably seen Sleater-Kinney the most out of any band. They sing very openly about love and being queer. It was angsty in a way that I was craving around then too: directional and defiant, but also thoughtful and smart. I think I wanted a lot of things at once. I wanted anger, but also confession and something tender, especially because when you're a teenager, you just have a million competing feelings. I hadn't been around any gay people. I had the concept that there were other gay people. The books I would read, and the shows on TV, a lot of them [had] gay people dying. These were living gay people who were thriving.”

The trans pageant divas in the Philippines really made me who I am. I was 15 years old and I learned the art of making the most of things, the art of recreating your life, the art of existing. Those were my formative years—I joined different pageants, different types of pageants, from a pageant next to a rice field to a pageant in front of 30,000 people in a coliseum. And that’s still my reference now—the art of making it work in all aspects of life. The name of my production company is Street Pageant Productions, my way of paying tribute.

As a director, it’s Pedro Almodovar. I used his film High Heels as a reference for my directorial debut Caretakers . And when I watched Volver , my God, I was like, those women. We all grew up with that. Those stories are obviously Spanish, but [they also feel] very Filipino. It’s a similar culture: a [piece of] gossip that would [get retold as] a melodrama that becomes so campy, that's almost passed down as myth.

“I came out at 14 years old in 1994. Finding queer shit to listen to and watch was very hard in those days. Priscilla, Queen of the Desert , that movie was everything to me—I was beyond obsessed. Just to see gay people being fabulous and gay just meant a lot to me.

Ani DiFranco was just so inspiring to me as an openly queer person who was writing songs about being queer, always self-released with her own record label. She built her own empire while being punk as fuck and queer as fuck but all in folk music—which obviously is not a genre that is normally punk as fuck or queer as fuck. The first [album of hers] that I fell in love with was Dilate , a friend of mine gave it as a gift. The first song [on that album] ‘Untouchable Face’ is one of the best songs of all time. I think if you listen [to songs I’ve done], especially if you listen to ‘Bad Liar’ by Selena Gomez, you can really hear the Ani influence in the phrasing of those verses. Like, we didn't do anything wrong, but it's clear who we were listening to that week. You know what I mean? We were vibing.”

“ Peter Pan , without question, is the most formative and influential work of art I’ve ever encountered in my life. It was the first theatre I ever saw in my life: I was four or five when my parents took me to see a production of Peter Pan the musical on Broadway. Up until that point, I had no understanding of what, really, storytelling was. I had no conception of what theatre was. I was brought to this big building, and sat in a seat, and I remember sitting in my dad’s lap because I couldn’t see over the heads of the people in front of me. I spent the entire thing on my dad’s lap. I just remember being entirely enthralled by what I was seeing.

The spectacle of it, that people were flying on stage, that they were flying over our heads … It really cemented, from the beginning, this idea that theatre was an event, that theatre was something that happens to you, rather than something that you passively take in. I think it really cemented my love of magic in storytelling.

The question is — and it’s a chicken and egg question — did it reveal my psyche to me, or did it create my psyche? I don’t know, because I was four years old. Either way, it was a pretty well-timed trip to the theatre for me in my life. While it’s hard to maybe discern Peter Pan in much of my work, I do sort of write about escape, and I do write about people divorced from themselves, the way Peter Pan is separated from his shadow. It was only half-unconscious that my character in The Inheritance is named Toby Michael Darling … So there’s something very, very fundamental and essential [about Peter Pan ] to my psyche as a person, and as an artist.”

The Tony-winning writer and director is best known for writing the play The Inheritance and for directing the blockbuster streaming hit Red, White and Royal Blue. Up next, he’s working on the RWRB sequel.

“Something I'm thinking about a lot right now is the work of E. M. Forster and his novel, Maurice —which was turned into a film by Merchant Ivory famously so—which is often discussed as his first and only gay novel. I would say most people, if they know the novel, they know the film first. [I was] in college [when I saw it]. It felt like I was watching my life at the time on screen because I was in love with a friend who had said to me, ‘I love you too, but I can't be gay.’ I was like, ‘What do you mean? What do you mean you love me and you can't be gay?’ I found myself during COVID unable to read, and for some reason I turned to the audiobook of this novel, and that led me back into re-reading. It became like my path back into language in a strange way after that horrible abandonment.

Fame and Flashdance were important films to young me. Fame , partly because there's one queer character who is struggling with his own sexuality and his crush on a friend at the school, and gradually comes out of the closet in this very intense scene. It was shocking to me at the time to see someone just say all of that. Then there's Michael Anthony Ray, who gives this stunning performance as a very talented, very sexy dance student who is struggling with his literacy and seems like, his sexuality too—that seems like a subtext to the film. [There’s a scene where] he's just giving, it seems, almost like ballroom. And he's giving go-go boy. He's so self-possessed as he rocks on one leg with another leg in the air, sort of dangling his foot back and forth, like a lure. And Flashdance [because] the main character's named Alex, even if she's not a man—and I'm not going to say that she didn't have an influence on my own experiences as a go-go dancer in San Francisco.”

“Even before high school, I watched the gay kiss on Dawson's Creek —the first gay kiss between two men [on primetime TV]. I remember seeing that and being like, ‘Ooh this is so scary. Who's in the room? Why do I feel this way?’ That definitely was a moment in my life where I started to be like, ‘Oh, I'm different and maybe I'm more like these guys.’ Seeing these guys on television was really important for me as I look back at it.

And then living in England, playing soccer at the time, I came across A Single Man [by Tom Ford]. I watched it a million times. I was very closeted thinking that I would never have my own love story and Tom's direction, the script, everything about it really, really inspired me. I came out shortly after that. [ A Single Man was] also the inspiration of, I want to someday be part of art that really moves people, in a way that it inspires them.

My husband and I collect a lot of art by gay artists and a lot that lived in New York City and were affected by the AIDS epidemic—Patrick Angus, Alvin Baltrop, [Robert] Mapplethorpe. I am a huge, huge fan of Hugh Steers. I find such beauty in the melancholy [of his work]. Sometimes, I just sit and have coffee and look at them because they're really important to me. It's a piece of history that I just don't want to lose. To go from being so afraid of who was in the room when I saw the first [gay] kiss on television to now celebrating and collecting gay art—my life has changed a lot.”
