Good Question!

The general consensus among experienced Corfu visitors is that the best time to go to Corfu is during late spring in May and June or early autumn in September and October.

These months are popular because the temperatures are not too hot, there are fewer crowds and you will also find flights and accommodation a lot cheaper.

I love visiting in June because you have warm weather and little rain but the temperatures are not as unbearable as in August.

However, the best time of year to visit Corfu for your trip will depend on what you want to get out of your trip.

If you want to go Island hopping , avoid doing it in the winter as many services don’t run. However, it is a great way to see Corfu and the other Islands no matter what time of year you go.

What is the best month to visit Corfu?

After visiting Corfu I would say the best months to visit are from May through to September.

If you are looking to swim in the warm waters and make the most of Corfu’s sun-kissed beaches, go in July.

The weather is usually at its hottest and it will most likely not rain once during your trip. However, you may be looking for slightly cooler weather, cheaper flights and fewer crowds for your Corfu trip.

If that’s the case, visit in May. But to save flight money, you can always drive here and have transport for your whole trip.

The months between April and October are the best time to visit Corfu Greece. Of those, July and August are the warmest and busiest months. Here is everything you need to know when you travel to Corfu!

Best time to visit Corfu Greece

When to visit Corfu Greece

Wondering what is the best time to go to Corfu? You are not alone! Corfu is a popular tourist destination in Greece. People visit from all around the world to see the amazing Old Town and enjoy the beautiful sandy beaches.

The best months to enjoy Corfu are June, September and early October. April and May can also be a nice time to visit, but the sea will be too cold for most people. The peak months of July and August will be busier, and maybe too hot for some visitors.

Outside the peak season months, you will find lower hotel prices and lower car rental prices . It will also be easier to book ferry tickets at the last minute.

Best time to visit Corfu Town

I’m Vanessa from Athens and I’ve written this detailed guide to help you plan your Corfu trip. I’ve included information about the weather, the best areas to stay depending on season, and plenty of tips so that you can make the most of your Greek vacation in Corfu!

Corfu Weather

As you may already know, Greece has the so-called Mediterranean climate. In many of the popular Greek destinations, summers are warm and dry, and winters are relatively mild.

Looking at a map of Greece, you will see that Corfu is located in the Ionian Sea, to the north-west of the mainland. It’s one of the northernmost islands in Greece, and is close to Albania.

Map of Corfu island in Greece

Due to its geographical location, Corfu’s climate is quite different to the climate of other Greek islands you may have visited, like for example Santorini or Rhodes. Corfu has more humidity and more frequent rainfall than in other areas of Greece.

The weather in Corfu varies a lot from month to month. And while predicting the weather accurately is definitely not possible these days, here is what you should expect during the different months.

Corfu in Spring: April and May

April and May are the two last months of spring in Corfu. You can get very pleasant weather overall, especially if you visit in May.

The average temperature during April generally ranges from about 15 to 20 C (59-68 F) during daytime. In May, it’s a bit warmer, perhaps up to 25 C (77 F).

Evenings are always much cooler. Some warmer clothing will be necessary, especially in April.

The Venetian Fortress in Corfu Town

Is spring a good time to visit Corfu?

Overall, spring is a good time to go to Corfu if you don’t care much about swimming and beach time. You can enjoy sightseeing, explore the island, talk to the locals, and just relax.

In terms of nature, Corfu is amazing in spring. The landscape is beautiful, with thousands of colorful flowers. Corfu is one of the greenest islands in Greece.

With that said, chances of precipitation are not negligible in spring. You should be prepared for a few rainy days, especially if you visit in April. If you are planning to hike, it’s better to go in late May, to minimize chances of rain.

Moreover, the sea will still be too cold to swim for some people. In fact, Corfu has some of the lowest sea temperatures in Greece. Personally, I was far too cold to swim properly in late May, but it depends on what you are used to!

In terms of tourist facilities, some businesses might still be closed in spring, especially in the smaller coastal resorts. If you are staying in Corfu Town, it will be lively and vibrant.

A church in Corfu - Sightseeing is great in spring

Greek Easter in Corfu

A special time to take a vacation in Corfu is the time around Greek Orthodox Easter, which always falls in April or May. If you are interested in culture and local traditions, it’s hard to beat Easter in Corfu.

Note that Orthodox Easter is usually celebrated on a different weekend to Catholic or Protestant Easter. For example, Greek Easter 2024 falls on 5th May.

Easter is a huge celebration in Corfu. During the week preceding Easter, you can catch various religious ceremonies at the island’s churches.

On Good Saturday, anyone staying in Corfu town will have the chance to witness a special cultural celebration.

Locals who live near Spianada Square hold up clay pots, known as “ botides “, on their balconies. They then throw them down on the streets making a lot of noise! You can get an idea in this incredible video!

On Easter Sunday, you can see huge feasts everywhere on the island, mostly revolving around food, drink and dance. If you like lamb, it’s a fantastic day to be anywhere in Greece!

Here is some more information: Greek Orthodox Easter .

Corfu in June

June is a great time month to explore Corfu. You will get overall good weather, with lots of sunshine and long daylight hours. The highest temperatures during the day can reach 28-30 C (82-86 F).

Evenings, when the sun goes down, are cooler. You should expect a minimum of 20 C (68 F), and usually higher.

Most businesses in Corfu will be open in June. Yet, there will be fewer visitors than the peak months of July and August, so if you are after a quieter vacation June is ideal.

Accommodation prices will typically be higher than in April / May, but you should still be able to find budget Corfu hotels , even if you book last-minute.

The famous Paleokastritsa in Corfu

Is June a good time to visit Corfu Greece?

June is one of my favourite months to visit the Greek islands, as days are super long. Sunset in Corfu is around 21:00 – 21:10, depending on the exact day of the month.

Fun fact: This is the latest sunset in Greece. In Athens, the sun sets 20 minutes earlier!

The sunny weather makes June a great month for a beach holiday. In fact, some people might find daytime temperatures too warm, because of the humidity.

June is also a good month for a family vacation, as it will be easier to find accommodation , and free beach space or sunbeds and umbrellas.

Quaint village in Corfu Greece

Peak season in Corfu: July and August

Like everywhere in Greece, the summer months of July and August are high season in Corfu. High temperatures during the day usually exceed 30 C (86 F), with evenings being cooler.

If you’ve ever heard of the seasonal meltemi winds that blow in islands like Mykonos or Tinos , you’ll be pleased to know that Corfu doesn’t have those. Combined with the humidity, this usually means that it might feel uncomfortably warm.

Although summer is the dry season in Corfu, you might get the occasional rainy day, or even a thunderstorm.

The two warmest months are also among the most popular time for people to visit Greece. And, like most Greek islands, Corfu will be busier then.

The first three weeks of August are usually the busiest time of the year, as this is also when many Greeks go on holiday. This is when hotel prices are at their highest, and advance booking is essential.

A quaint village in Corfu Greece

Should I go on a holiday to Corfu during the peak season?

Corfu is busy and vibrant during the peak summer months. Some of the best Greek panigiria festivals in Corfu happen in July and August.

For example, make sure you check out the celebrations for the Virgin Mary on the 15th of August .

If you want a lively vacation and you don’t mind the extra cost, July and August are the best months to visit. People who are after more quiet holidays will probably find August too busy.

If you can only visit Corfu in August but you are not so keen on crowds, head to south Corfu. Areas like Santa Barbara or Gardenos won’t be as busy as some of the popular resorts on the north coast.

Beautiful sandy beach in Corfu

September in Corfu

For many people, September is the best time to visit Corfu – and any of the Greek islands for that matter. The weather is still nice and sunny, the sea is warmer than in early summer, and the majority of the crowds are gone.

If you want to enjoy Corfu at a more relaxed pace, September is ideal. There will still be enough to do, and hotel prices will be lower than in peak season.

What is September like in Corfu?

If you are heading to Corfu in September, you can expect daytime temperatures to be between 26-28 C (79-82 F). This is usually a good temperature for sightseeing and beach time.

Nights will be cooler, around 18-20 C (64-68 F) – perfect for sleeping! Make sure to bring some warmer clothes, as evenings might feel cool if you plan to stay out late.

Note that there may be the occasional rainy day, or two, or maybe three. Remember that the Ionian islands are more humid than most other islands in Greece!

Iconic view of Corfu island Greece

Corfu in October

October can be a good month to visit some of the Greek islands. However, as Corfu is so north on the map, Corfu weather in October can be very hit and miss.

Again, if you are not bothered about having good weather, there’s nothing stopping you from visiting Corfu in October. After all, Corfu Town will be equally interesting, and much less crowded than in summer.

However, if you are hoping to spend some time on the beach, Corfu is not a great option in October.

If October is the only time you can travel to Greece, have a look at this article about the hottest Greek islands to visit in October .

Best time to visit Corfu for sightseeing

Winter and the off-season in Corfu

Few people choose to visit Corfu or any other Greek islands in winter, and there’s a good reason for this. It can get chilly and rainy, and it might even snow sometimes!

Compared to smaller islands, Corfu, and especially Corfu Town, remains lively in winter. You will find restaurants, cafes, bars, shops, tourist attractions, and plenty of accommodation options.

With that said, note that there are very few (if any) direct international flights to Corfu in November, December, January, February and most of March. You’d typically have to fly to Athens, and take an onward domestic flight.

Should I visit Corfu in winter?

If you are interested in a short city break, Corfu Town is actually a great destination to visit in winter. There’s a lot to do, and the weather will be milder than in most other countries in Europe.

You could also consider the various cruises that stop on various Greek islands, including Corfu. These happen year-round, and they tend to be packed in summer.

In fact, if you are visiting the Greek islands on a cruise, winter is a very interesting time to go. You won’t have to compete with the summer crowds and you’ll be able to do some sightseeing at a relaxed pace.

Just make sure you bring the appropriate clothes and shoes! Here is my article on what to pack for Greece for every season , as winters can get pretty cold!

Winters in Greece can get pretty cold!

Conclusion: Best time to take a vacation to Corfu

In a nutshell, the best time to visit Corfu Greece is in summer, late spring and early autumn.

Summer is the most popular, but also the most crowded and most expensive time to visit. It can also get too warm for some people.

June or September are the best months to visit Corfu if you want to spend some time on the beaches, see the popular sights, and enjoy a selection of restaurants, bars and activities. Plus, you will find more affordable accommodation , and a better selection of rental cars .

The island is fairly large, and plenty of spots are worth visiting. Regardless of the season you choose for your holiday, there is something you can enjoy in Corfu.

Corfu’s Seasons

Corfu in spring.

Greece in spring is a beautiful sight, and Corfu is no exception. While March and April may be a bit cooler with occasional rain showers, it still is a season of the island coming alive. It is still too cold to swim (unless you are a brave soul or book a hotel with a heated pool ), but the landscapes already make for a stunning backdrop for hiking and exploring.

Corfu in Spring

The sky will get cloudy, so pack a light rain jacket and an umbrella. Sure, the weather might not be the warmest, but the lack of crowds and lower prices make it a great time for a budget traveler to choose.

You won’t have to wait in lines to get to the museums or popular attractions, and you can easily find discounted accommodations and cheaper flights. If you are not interested in suntanning or swimming in the sea, visiting during the off-season can be a smart choice.

Late April and May get a bit more busy with tourists, as the temperatures start to rise and the rain showers become less frequent. This is the perfect time to visit if you want to enjoy outdoor activities like hiking and biking without the risk of heavy rainfall. The mild weather makes it perfect for walking tours and exploring the charming towns and villages.

Special Events in Corfu in Spring

Visiting during the last two Sundays of March will give you a unique chance to see (and participate in) the carnival celebrations. In Corfu Town, animated parades take place, music is played in the streets, and locals and tourists alike dance and have fun.

Tsiknopempti , a Greek celebration of the last Thursday before Lent in the Greek Orthodox Church, centers on… grilling and feasting on delicious meats with friends and family. Why not join the celebration? If you’re a foodie, it’s something you will definitely like.

Greek Independence Day on March 25th is also a great time to visit, fully immerse yourself in the festivities, and see what the Greek culture is like. In Corfu Town, marching bands and parades fill the streets, and traditional Greek dances are performed. It is truly something worth experiencing!

Corfu in Summer

Of course, the sunny days and warm summer temperatures make Corfu the most popular during this time of year. The island’s beautiful beaches are packed, and the flights are usually the most expensive.

Corfu in Summer

You will need to book your accommodation well in advance to secure a spot, especially if you want to stay in one of the popular hotels, like Stefanos Place ApartHotel or the Archontiko Petrettini Boutique Hotel . Less expensive places, like AirBnBs and hostels, will also fill up quickly, so it’s best to plan at least a few months ahead.

However, June to August gives you the opportunity to enjoy the seaside attractions and participate in watersports and other beach activities. The clear blue waters are the warmest during these months, so they are perfect for swimmers and snorkelers. If you like to relax on a lounger and soak up the sun, it will be the ideal time for you to visit Corfu.

In the summer, you can fully enjoy the natural beauty of Corfu, from horseback riding and diving to hiking and sailing. The wide variety of outdoor activities that the island has to offer is probably the most appealing aspect of the season.

Special Events in Corfu in Summer

Summer is also full of smaller festivals and events on the island, offering a chance to experience the local culture and traditions.

While most of them, like Saint Onofrio’s Day celebrations in Pelekas on June 12th and the Festival of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Corfu Town in August, are religious occasions, they are still celebrated with great enthusiasm and worth attending.

Don’t forget the Varkarola , an event that takes place in August and is a recreation of a historic sea battle.

Corfu in Fall

Is October a good time to visit Corfu? It absolutely is. While most of Europe is largely cooling down in the fall, the island still enjoys pleasant temperatures and many sunny days.

In September and early October, average temperatures in Corfu range from 68–77 °F (20–25 °C), making it an ideal Fall destination for those who prefer warmer weather. It’s still a perfect time to enjoy a swim without the scorching heat and less competition for the sun loungers.

In November, Corfu becomes much less crowded with tourists and becomes perfect for long seaside walks, as the beaches are not crowded with sunbathers.

Additionally, the cooler temperatures during the fall months make it more comfortable to explore Corfu’s historical sites and landmarks. Make your way to the beautiful villages as the residents get into the slower, more relaxed pace of life after the busy summer season.

Corfu in Fall

Special Events in Corfu in Fall

Fall months are not as full of celebration and festivities as the spring and summer months, but there are still a few events to be enjoyed in Corfu during this time.

Corfu’s wine festival takes place in the fall each year. Here you can sample wine from the wineries in Corfu , and enjoy food and celebrations!

Ohi Day, observed on October 28th, commemorates the day that Greek politician Ioannis Metaxas refused the Axis powers’ demand to be allowed into Greek territory. It is often celebrated with military parades, and buildings are decorated with national flags.

Corfu in Winter

Winter is the least expensive season to visit Greece, as hotel and flight prices tend to go down when the weather gets colder. Despite the cooler temperatures, islands like Corfu still have a lot to offer. If you seek the authentic Greek experience, winter is a great time to visit.

During the off-peak season, Corfu is less tourist-focused, and you can observe the real, local way of life without the hustle and bustle of pleasing the vacationers. It is also one of the best seasons for hiking!

Lower temperatures and less sun make it more comfortable to wander around the island, where dozens of hiking trails await exploration. From short walks around the main Corfu Town to long, challenging hikes from village to village, Corfu will satisfy every hiker’s desire for adventure and exploration.

Check trails like the Cape Drastis Loop , which starts in the traditional settlement of Peroulades, and the Erimitis Beaches Hike , where you can soak in the natural beauty of the Greek coastline.

Winter is also great for foodies – with restaurants and cafés less crowded, you can easily find a table in almost every place. Try the freshly caught seafood, discover the local wine selections, and indulge in delicious Greek desserts.

What Is the Best Time for Corfu Holidays?

Corfu is such a great spot that it can be visited year-round, depending on your preferences. The versatility of this holiday destination makes it perfect for almost every type of traveler.

Officially, the high tourist season lasts from late April to October, with July and August being the busiest months . What time will be the best for you to visit depends on your preferences and what experience you are looking for.

Spring is full of celebrations and festivals , as well as pleasant weather with blooming flowers and lush green landscapes. In summer, the peak tourist season, the island is crowded but offers the best conditions for swimming and sunbathing. Autumn brings cooler temperatures and fewer crowds, making it great for exploring the important landmarks and places that are usually full of tourists. In winter, you can immerse yourself in the slow, peaceful pace of life , and while you won’t be able to swim or snorkel, you can still enjoy the beautiful landscapes and tasty food.

Corfu: Frequently Asked Questions

Is Corfu safe for solo travelers?

Corfu is considered as safe as the rest of the popular tourist destinations in Greece. It is one of the best greek islands for solo female travel . As long as you take the usual precautions, like avoiding isolated areas at night and keeping an eye on your belongings, you should be safe.

Remember to always bring copies of your documents with you, in case you lose the originals. I also recommend getting travel insurance just in case of any unforeseen circumstances. Better safe than sorry!

Do people speak English in Corfu?

Many young people on the island speak English, and those working in the hospitality and tourism industries are usually quite fluent. The older residents might not be as proficient though, so learning how to say a few basic phrases (like asking for direction) in Greek can be helpful. Many British expats live in Corfu, so you may come across English speakers in the community.

What town to stay in on Corfu?

Where you should stay depends on what your plans are – Corfu Town is the easiest to get to and offers a variety of accommodations and places to explore. However, the smaller towns and villages offer a much more authentic experience, and can also be found for a lower price.

Some places to consider staying in Corfu include Paleokastritsa, Kassiopi, and Agios Gorgios. If you stay in Sidari, Villa Spyridoula is a great accommodation, just a short walk from the beach.

How to move around Corfu?

While Corfu has several public bus services (city and intercity ones), many routes are only available during the high season.

Renting a car or a motorcycle guarantees you the freedom to explore the island at your own pace, so consider this option if you don’t want to be tied down to bus schedules. There are also plenty of organized tours that take you around the island all year round.

Do I need a visa to go to Corfu?

You may need a visa to visit Corfu if you are not an EU citizen. It is important to check the visa requirements for your country before planning your trip. was from 19.06 to 03.07 18 in Corfu. Wonderful weather, rain for three days in the morning, then very hot again. All in all everything was perfect. Drive there again next year at the same time.

Weather Rating: 5 stars – Excellent

The weather was really nice almost all the time, it was very warm in the sun. There was hardly any wind either. However, the water was much too cold for our conditions; this may have been partly due to the many bays. For sunbathing and “hiking” it was definitely the ideal weather!

Weather Rating: 4 stars – Good

Sunny from morning to evening with temperatures up to 35°C.

Corfu Weather And Best Time To Visit Corfu

Weather in Corfu is typical of the Mediterranean climate - not too extreme and pleasant almost all year round. This beautiful island is located off the west coast of Greece amidst the Ionian Sea. It has a population of just over 100,000 people, but it gets filled with twice as much during the summers with tourists coming in from neighbouring countries, as it is a very popular and easily accessible destination. So the best time to visit Corfu is actually during spring or fall to escape all the hordes of tourists. Between April and October is when you can best enjoy its beach-weather.

Spring (March to May)

Spring (March to May): Corfu Weather And Best Time To Visit Corfu

Corfu is in full bloom during the spring. After the dry season, the green of nature makes its way back. The weather is still a bit chilly in March but by April it is 17 °C and by May it is a pleasant 22 °C. Since it is an island, beach activities are always at the top of everyone's mind and that is best experienced during the latter part of spring when the golden sand is sprawling with fewer tourists.

Easter is celebrated with a lot of gusto so that's always a lovely time to visit the island.

Summer (June to August)

Summer (June to August): Corfu Weather And Best Time To Visit Corfu

Summer is filled with tourists especially from the UK and Europe . Weather can get hot but for those who like the sunshine, it's quite perfect. The average temperature at its highest is around 31 °C. No rain is expected during the summer months. Water sports and sun-bathing activities are at their peak. Be sure to book your hotel well in advance to get decent rates.

The popular  Varkarola festival is celebrated on the 11th of August every year which is a dedication to  Saint Spyridon.  The Festival of Garouna and Ano Gerakiana is also celebrated in August.

Autumn (September to November)

Autumn (September to November): Corfu Weather And Best Time To Visit Corfu

Fall is a great time to spend a few days in Corfu, getting your feet wet and having a relaxed holiday, with lesser heat and crowds of summer. The temperature is still fairly warm in September averaging 27 °C but by November it goes down to 15 °C, making it a bit too chilly to show off your swimsuit. This is also the perfect weather to go on hikes and do loads of sightseeing. A few days of rain can be expected in October and November.

There aren't any notable annual events that take place during this season.

Winter (December to February)

Winter (December to February): Corfu Weather And Best Time To Visit Corfu

Come winter and a lot of the beach activities and resorts close down. It is also far too cold to take a dip in the turquoise waters. However, there is so much more to enjoy in Corfu than just its beaches. So even in Winter, you can enjoy a nice holiday and spend quality time hiking its nature trails and delving into its rich historical past. It can rain about 9 to 10 days in a month during this season.

The Feast of Saint Spyridon is celebrated every year on December 22nd and the Carnival of Corfu is celebrated in February.

Best Time To Visit Corfu

What is the best time to visit corfu.

Best time to visit Corfu is during the peak season of June and August, when everything is fully operational, up and running. Shoulder seasons of April to May and September to October make the best time to visit if one can manage the holidays. Temperature during this period is pleasant, prices are affordable, and there are less tourists. Although the Mediterranean is appropriate for swimming all year round, winter (during November to March) is an easy season to get rooms but most of the services and businesses are closed due to off-season.

Corfu weather overview

Corfu is the principal of the islands which lie in the Ionian Sea, the deepest part of the Mediterranean , and is more sheltered from the wind but experiences more rain than the islands of the Aegean. The winter months here are very rainy indeed; in fact, Corfu is the wettest part of Greece , and this rainfall makes the island one of the lushest and most beautiful in Greece .

Not for Corfu the scorched scrubbiness which afflicts other parts of Greece; this island's lush, rain-fed vegetation gives it a positively sub-tropical feel. Even the winds are gentler here: Corfu does not fall prey to the strong northerly winds which can rage through the Aegean, a mixed blessing since it means that conditions on the island can be more sultry than elsewhere during the heat of the summer.

At summer's end, the stickiness increases when the island falls under the sleepy spell of the Sirocco, a warm wind which brings high humidity in its wake and ushers in the beginning of the rains.

Croatia has vibrant cities, tumbling waterfalls and rolling vineyards.

But most visitors are here for its 1800km (1120 miles) coastline, which tumbles down the Adriatic like a glorious, half-finished jigsaw puzzle.  Here you’ll find idyllic coves, sophisticated ports and ferries that glide from island to island.

Choosing the best time to go to Croatia depends on what you want from your visit. High season brings high temperatures and a party vibe, particularly on the Dalmatian Coast, home to highlights like walled Dubrovnik , its hip cousin Split , and Hvar Town ’s classy waterfront. Shoulder season is quieter, and great for hiking and watersports, while winter lets you experience culture and festivals at off-season prices in the capital, Zagreb .

The south of Croatia is a little warmer than the north, but the main difference in temperature is between the coast and the interior. By the sea, summers are warm and winters relatively mild, while in the interior, temperatures are more continental, with slightly warmer summer temperatures and colder winters.

Our guide to what's happening throughout the year in Croatia will help you plan the perfect vacation for your needs.

June to August’s high season is the hottest time to visit

Croatia’s tourism peaks between June and August, when the Adriatic’s warm waters charm countless visitors. There are boat parties and medieval fairs, the booze flows freely, and the smarter resorts fill with yachters. It’s great fun, though afternoons are roasting hot, the lines at attractions are at their longest, and accommodation costs rise. Inland, temperatures are higher, but crowds are less noticeable and Zagreb empties as locals head for the coast.

June is the quietest month of high season, but with clear skies, music festivals and the promise of early summer, it's a strong contender for Croatia’s best month. Ferries move on to their summer schedule, which makes heading out to islands such as pristine Cres , happening Hvar and forested Mljet a breeze. The cities are buzzing, and the LGBTIQ+ community lights up the streets during Zagreb Pride.

Visitor numbers really ramp up come July – you'll need to arrange accommodation well in advance and work harder to find a sunbathing spot. If the bustle gets too much, try touring the quieter Kornati Islands , hopping on a sea kayak from Dubrovnik, or exploring the vineyards and hills of the interior. The Dubrovnik Summer Festival kicks off in early July, and the International Folklore Festival brings a celebration of traditional culture to Zagreb .

The sea is warmest in August, beach bars hum with revelers, Zagreb empties out and festivals salute high summer. Sonus is a techno party on Pag, Špancirfest brings music and culture to Varaždin, there’s a fair dating back to Venetian times on Krk , and jousting in Sinj. Bookings are essential everywhere on the coast – festival-goers who try and make do with a tent will swelter.

May and September to October have sunshine and fewer crowds

Late spring and early fall are arguably the best times to visit Croatia. Sea temperatures are pleasant, and there’s plenty of sunshine, but the country’s pebble beaches and rocky coves are relatively quiet. With endless still seas, May and September are great times to sail in Croatia. Onshore, these are the best times to cycle, hike or visit the national parks . Better still, accommodations are also easier to come by than in high season.

The resort towns are warming up for the summer in May, making this a splendid month to wander squares and promenades and take short dips in the cool sea. Accommodation prices are lower, and bays and coves that are packed in summer have a tranquil feel. Rafting on the Cetina River or the Zrmanja (just east of Zadar ) is also a highlight. The summer party season starts to gear up at the Sea Star Festival .

Things start to quiet down a little in September after a hectic summer season, but there are still plenty of ferries and cultural events to transport body and soul. This is another great time for a Dalmatian beach trip , while truffle season comes to Istria.

By October, Croatia is in shoulder season proper, with kids back in school and some ferry services and hotels closing over the course of the month. The coast is fairly warm with cool evenings and a mellow vibe, and you can still get anywhere and do just about anything, whether it's feeling tranquil on the islands or exploring Dubrovnik’s walls.

Accommodations are cheapest from November to April

There’s a reason the crowds stay away between November and April. The interior can be freezing, and while the coast is milder, it’s still affected by the bura wind that whips across the European plain, canceling ferries and snatching hats off heads. But if you’re here for food and culture, you can still have a fine time. Rates at hotels and other accommodations are at their lowest, and you’ll be sharing the galleries and backstreets with locals.

Temperatures can still be pleasant in November, but hotels and restaurants on the coast may be closed, and the waters are chilly. Instead, treat any sunshine as a bonus, use the lower prices and shorter lines to tour cultural sights, celebrate the silver screen at the Zagreb Film Festival and watch as the last leaves (and potentially the first snow) fall.

There's no way to sugarcoat it – December is cold, many tourist businesses are shut, and snow settles on high ground. It’s a good time to experience Dubrovnik's local life: bars and galleries are open, while the run-up to Christmas brings mulled wine and DJ sets to those prepared to brave the winter streets.

The mercury is still low in January, so why not stay indoors and discover Zagreb’s lively cafes, impressive galleries and museums – and you can get a late-night culture fix at the annual Night of Museums. Sljeme (near Zagreb) or Platak (near the coastal hub of Rijeka) offer reasonable skiing.

The days get a little longer in February, but tourists are rare, and accommodations remain heavily discounted. It’s an intriguing time to tour the coast – focus on sights like Trogir’s richly carved cathedral rather than the beaches. Rijeka’s carnival is Croatia’s biggest and wildest, with a costume parade, bell-ringing and bands. Brighter, drier weather makes March a good bet for mixing visits to churches and galleries with outdoor exploration. You can hike along the coast or hills, or take in the Krka and Plitvice national parks, where wooded slopes wind between lakes and waterfalls that thunder with meltwater.

The sea hasn’t yet warmed up in April, but trees are bright with blossom and sunshine is never far away – try Istria ’s hill towns (where asparagus season is in full flow) or the Samobor Hills near Zagreb. Parades liven up many towns over Easter and music fills every corner of Zagreb at the  Music Biennale .

Best Times To Visit Paris

The best time to visit Paris is from June to August and September to October. Both summer and fall have its ups and downs. From June to August the weather in Paris is just about  parfait (perfect). Average highs are in the high 70s and there are long days of sunshine. Unfortunately, summer is also the most crowded time – and the most expensive. For lower travel rates and significantly shorter lines at attractions , plan a visit in the fall. The seasonal foliage is known to stun, though the city's spring blooms are pretty famous too. If a travel deal is all that you're after, a visit during the winter will surely shave off travel expenses. Keep in mind though that Paris is one of the most visited cities in the world, seeing upward of 30 million travelers yearly. So no matter what time you visit, there will always be tourists and some crowds.

8 Reasons Why the Fall Is the Best Time To Visit Italy

I taly is an iconic travel destination that is influential on a global level. Art, architecture, cuisine, and the natural beauty of Italy make it a dynamic destination. These features are impressive and can be best enjoyed by travelers in the fall season. Italy’s foliage is a rustic yet intricate addition to the sprawling land and charming landmarks that have made the country famous . The fall is the best time to visit Italy for many reasons, but mostly because the country’s ambiance can not be topped at this time of year.

Average Temperature This Time of Year

  • 55-90 Degrees F

Weather

The weather in Italy varies quite a bit in the fall season. Locals and frequent visitors to Italy consider the first half of the fall season to be an extension of summer. This time of the year offers the same heat as the summer season but provides a little relief as the seasons change. In early autumn, travelers will experience sunny days with cool nights but as the season progresses the weather conditions shift considerably. Nearing November, travelers can expect more rainfall and chilly temperatures.

Travel Tip : A good rule of thumb for travelers to remember is that the northern part of Italy is typically colder and wetter during fall while the southern portion is warmer and drier.

Italy has plenty of festivals for travelers to enjoy during the fall. The season brings plenty of communal fun and things to do. Some of the popular harvest festivals include the Sagre Festival and various truffle festivals. The Sagre Harvest Festival usually celebrates the local community, food, or even a saint patron. These types of festivals often take place in October and November. Truffle festivals are popular throughout multiple regions of Italy including Tuscany, Umbria, and Piedmont. These weekend festivals typically occur in October.

Travel Tip : To learn more about Sagre festivals, travelers should ask locals or check out the posters along the roads. Travelers often have better luck with the small celebrations, especially if they arrive early.

Shoulder Season Perks

Italy’s shoulder season runs from September to October, allowing vacationers some of the perks of high season, like the weather, without having to endure the least pleasant parts. The fall is the best time to sightsee in Central Italy due to the less crowded classic sites. Since travelers often visit Europe in the summer, those visiting during the fall can appreciate the somewhat quieter environment. With Italy’s bustling crowds nearly gone, the price of travel is usually more affordable too. Travelers may notice lower prices for things like flights while they plan their fall visit.

Travel Tip : Although the best part of the fall to visit typically changes year to year due to the weather, November is the cheapest time to fly to Italy.

Wine Tasting

Wine tasting is one of the most popular activities for (adult) travelers visiting Italy. The hilly wine country of Italy is gorgeous. It is a great area of Italy for travelers to get great vacation pictures too. Fall is the best time to visit Italy for wine because the grape harvest is in September and October. This means that travelers can get a close look into how the local wineries create high-quality wines. Guided tours of the vineyards are a popular excursion especially in the fall since travelers can appreciate the fall foliage and relaxing views of regions like Tuscany.

Travel Tip : Some wineries require appointments or reservations so travelers who are visiting popular locations should be sure to book their spot ahead of time.

Olive Harvest

The olive harvest is another widely celebrated occasion in Italy during the fall. Olive harvesting is a significant activity that locals put a lot of energy into so visitors have plenty to learn. The traditional harvesting typically begins in October and continues until November or December. Travelers can take tours where they pick olives in regions like Tuscany but there are many different experiences to choose from. Throughout the country, agriturismos offer different types of tourism opportunities that travelers will likely find interesting and rewarding.

Travel Tip : It is recommended that olives are picked near the end of October or the beginning of November for the best quality olive oil, so travelers may be wise to plan their trip during this period.

Perfect Time For The Beach

The coast of Italy is famous for its charming villages and popular beaches. Although the high season is the most popular time for travelers to enjoy Italy’s beaches, the fall is a great pick too. Due to the milder weather, September is the best time to visit Italy for swimming and sunbathing. Some of the most popular beaches are in different regions, including Liguria, Puglia, and the Amalfi Coast.

Travel Tip : The best bet for travelers wanting to take a dip during a fall visit is to visit the south of Italy in early October.

Visit The Dolomites

The Dolomites are a popular mountain range in Italy with unmatched scenic views. The northeastern range of Italy is a UNESCO World Heritage Site so even if travelers are not up for a hike, a visit is a great tourist experience. Travelers who are interested in hiking can expect to explore the range in a little over a week if they plan a road trip. An alternative way to explore the Dolomites is through a camera lens since this site is popular for how photogenic it is.

Travel Tip : At the beginning of the fall season, travelers can expect the temperatures at the Dolomites to be around 65 degrees but the nights get significantly colder. At times, and higher elevations, temperatures may drop to below zero and travelers may see snow.

Explore Historic Areas

Italy is a historic hub with plenty of landmarks to explore. Enjoy fewer crowds at popular tourist sites and throughout the surrounding areas during fall. This season also brings a charming aesthetic that travelers have come to love. When visiting Italy in the fall travelers should be sure to see Rome, Florence, Tuscany, or the Amalfi Coast. These areas have some of the most intriguing historic spots. Some specific historic sites for travelers to explore in the fall include the Saint Mark’s Basilica, Vatican City, and Herculaneum.

Travel Tip : October is likely to be the ideal month to visit historical sites in Italy since the heat is at a minimum and the changing leaves create the perfect background.

Travelers can appreciate all the features of Italy most during the fall. The lack of sweltering heat and the slightly smaller crowds are some of the reasons why this season is considered the best time to visit Italy. A fall visit may grant visitors a brand-new experience of the country and even allow them to see the benefits of avoiding the high season. The fall season may be underrated but it is certainly a great time to experience Italy.

These are the top eight reasons why the fall is the best time to visit Italy. pictured: the streets of Italy

American tourist found dead on small Greek island west of Corfu. 3 other tourists are missing

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — A missing American tourist has been found dead on a beach on a small Greek island west of Corfu, local media reported.

The body of the man was found Sunday on a rocky, fairly remote beach on the island of Mathraki by another tourist. He had been reported missing Thursday by his host, a Greek-American friend. The tourist was last seen Tuesday at a cafe in the company of two female tourists who have since left the island.

No further details about the victim, including a name or hometown, were immediately available.

Mathraki, which has a population of 100, is a 3.9-square-kilometer (1.2-square-mile) heavily wooded island, west of the better-known island of Corfu.

This was the latest in a string of recent cases in which tourists on the Greek islands have died or gone missing. Some, if not all, had set out on hikes in very hot temperatures.

A 74-year-old  Dutch tourist  was found by a fire department drone on Saturday lying face down in a ravine about 300 meters (330 yards) from the spot where he was last observed last Sunday, walking with some difficulty in the blistering heat.

Dr.  Michael Mosley , a noted British television presenter and author, was found dead last Sunday on the island of Symi. A coroner concluded that he had died the previous Wednesday, shortly after going for a hike over difficult, rocky terrain.

On Friday, two French tourists were reported missing on Sikinos, a relatively secluded Cyclades island in the Aegean Sea, with less than 400 permanent residents.

The two women, ages 64 and 73, had left their respective hotels to meet.

On the island of Amorgos, also in the Cyclades, authorities are still searching for a 59-year-old tourist reported missing since Tuesday, when he had gone on a solo hike in very hot conditions. U.S. media identified the missing tourist as retired Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Albert Calibet of Hermosa Beach, California.
