8 things to know before visiting Savannah

The Savannah  of years past conjures up images of high society and tradition, with grand homes and dramatic oak trees like those featured in the famous book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil .

But these days, it’s a welcoming and eclectic place where you’ll find locals, art students and visitors all enjoying the same spaces. The city draws in history lovers to admire the carefully preserved historic homes and museums, and foodies for the restaurant scene influenced by a wide variety of cultures. It’s easy to get around and relatively safe, making it a popular escape for many travelers.

Here’s what you need to know about the Hostess City before you go.

1. Spend at least three days in Savannah

If it’s your first time visiting, you’ll need to spend at least three days in Savannah to even scratch the surface. Most travelers choose the weekend, arriving mid-day on Friday. This is a great time to get your bearings and explore without an agenda. Saturday is when you’ll see most of the attractions and museums . Don’t expect many places to be open on Sunday until late, so get one last meal in before hitting the road.

If you have longer to spend in Savannah, plan on exploring beyond the historic district – spend some time in the Starland District, Tybee Island and the Isle of Hope.

2. Use rideshare apps from the airport to maximize time

If you’re arriving by plane, it will be at Savannah/Hilton-Head International Airport, which serves the coastal areas in both Georgia and South Carolina. Depending on what time you land, it should take anywhere from 20-40 minutes to get to the heart of downtown, varying wildly based on traffic.

Rideshare companies are available, including Lyft and Uber. You can pick them up from the north entrance of baggage claim. Taxis can also be hailed from outside of the airport.

The city’s local bus system, Chatham Area Transit or CAT, also stops at the airport on the West Chatham Route 3. It’s not the fastest option, but definitely the cheapest, with rates starting at $1.50 per ride.

3. You probably don’t need a car to get around Savannah

Just about every car rental company has a presence in Savannah, but for the most part, you won’t need your own vehicle to get around the city. Savannah’s historic district is walkable, with most destinations no more than a 15-20 minute stroll through the tree-lined squares. Having a car can be a hassle, especially when it comes to finding metered parking spots or decks.

The DOT bus is a free shuttle that visits all of the city’s top landmarks, including the Downtown Loop from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to the Eastern Wharf and the Forsyth Loop, which goes from Johnson Square to Victory Drive. The Savannah Belles ferry is also free, with a triangular route to the Westin hotel across the river, City Hall Landing at the eastern side of River Street, and the Waving Girl statue on the east side of River Street. If you want to go further, the Token Transit app is an easy way to purchase a ticket in advance. All you have to do is show it to the driver when you board.

The only exception is if you want to visit Tybee Island and the outer areas of the city. In that case, renting a car for a day might be prudent as it can take around 25 minutes to get there, and the island is big enough that you’ll want a way to get around. Just keep in mind that in many places, including the beach access points, you’ll have to pay to park.

4. Reservations are essential for the best restaurants

There are plenty of great restaurants in Savannah, including award-winners from celebrity chefs, but you’ll need to plan ahead if you want to go – especially during high season and events like St. Patrick’s Day or SCAD graduation.

The Grey , Husk and Common Thread are among the most sought-after tables that you can book in advance online. There’s also greater availability at more casual restaurants, which you can make a reservation for if you’re traveling with a group. Alternatively, go during happy hour or sit at the bar.

5. Yes, you can walk around Savannah with alcohol (with exceptions)

Visitors to Savannah tend to be surprised that the city’s alcohol laws that allow you to legally take your drink with you, but there are exceptions to this rule. First and foremost, the drinking age in the United States is 21, which is absolutely enforced in Savannah. You must have a legal ID that is up-to-date, including a driver’s license or passport.

The open container policy applies to the historic district , from River Street to Jones Street. You can only carry a drink in a plastic 16-ounce cup or can, so ask for a “go cup” from a bar. You can only have one drink at a time, and you can’t have a drink in a motor vehicle. If you don’t follow the rules, you may get arrested!

6. The best neighborhood to stay in depends on what you’re interested in

River Street and the historic district are the most popular places to stay, especially for first-time visitors. There’s been a recent hotel boom, including the openings of the JW Marriott Plant Riverside District and the Thompson Savannah . But things can get rowdy on weekends and the incoming ships sound their horns at all hours – if sleep is what you’re after, you might want to look elsewhere.

The Ellis Square and Madison Square areas are a nice alternative because you can still walk to River Street, as well as the most beautiful areas in Savannah. The DeSoto Hotel and the Andaz Savannah are well-located with great amenities.

7. Pack light layers to handle the heat

While you might expect Savannah to be a very dressy city, most places you go will actually be casual. The only dress codes are in fine dining restaurants, but otherwise, comfort is key. Light colors and layers are best, especially during the summer months when the humidity is in full force.

Comfortable shoes are also important, especially if you’re walking all over town. Bringing a hand fan can help you cool off if you’re waiting in line to get into restaurants like Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House or just relaxing in one of the squares.

8. Savannah is a safe city

For the most part, Savannah is safer than other major cities. According to the latest crime statistics , the majority of crimes are car break-ins and petty theft. With that said, use common sense as you would anywhere else.

Walking alone at night is usually fine, but if you’re feeling nervous, opt for a taxi or pedicab . Drink responsibly and watch where you walk, especially on River Street, where the uneven bricks make it easy to trip. During the day, drink plenty of water to avoid overheating.

Savannah is an amazing place to go to escape winter, as it rarely gets cooler than around 40 degrees and is frequently in the lovely and temperate mid-fifties. And Savannah is an underrated Halloween destination – the city thrives on its history, much of which is a little spooky. Ghost tours of specific haunted places and of the city as a whole are popular year-round but kick it up a notch in late September. If you choose to visit during the summer, know that it gets quite hot and muggy, but the live music and seasonal cuisine makes it entirely worth it. Spring and fall are always lovely times to travel, and moreso when your destination tends toward humidity — Savannah's spring and fall are less muggy, but still warm, and are particularly excellent choices if your goal is to enjoy Savannah's surrounding islands.

Things to Know

Savannah is a decent-sized city, but visitors almost never go beyond the Historic District. It's not that other areas lack for things to do; more that the Historic District has most of the things that Savannah is most famous for, is very walkable, and has the largest concentration of hotels.

Savannah really embraces its identity as one of the spookiest cities in America. There's a reason this guide focuses so much on the haunted attractions of the city; there are so many of them, and it is a favorite destination for history buffs, ghost chasers, and anyone who likes a good haunted house tour. There are many other things to do in Savannah, but the city is the subject of one of the most best-selling true crime novels of all time, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt, and has been the subject of some of the most-viewed episodes of beloved ghost hunting shows.

In the true spirit of famed Southern hospitality, Savannah locals are warm, friendly, and more than happy to point you toward their favorite places or help you get where you need to go. Sidewalks tend to be wide, allowing the city to be accessible to folks with wheelchairs; it has very few hills, so people with mobility limitations should find Savannah an easy and enjoyable place to visit.

How to Get Around

Historic Savannah, where most visitors spend their time, is extremely walkable and it's unlikely that you'll need more than your own two feet to see everything you'd like to see. However, if you'd like to venture further or faster, here are your best options.

Trains: Savannah is not serviced by any local light rails, as the city is on the smaller side. There is an Amtrak station if you want to use Savannah as your base to explore surrounding areas of Georgia.

Buses: There are two bus services, the CAT and the DOT. The CAT serves not only Savannah but the surrounding Chatham area, and costs $1.50 per one-way trip. The DOT is completely free, and services 24 stops in the Historic District, including Belles Ferry. The DOT is also ADA-accessible, making it a wonderful service for differently-abled people who want to enjoy all that Savannah has to offer.

Taxis: Yellow cab service is available in Savannah, though visitors usually use it mainly to get from the airport to their hotels. Elite Taxi is the company of choice, with the highest ratings and most frequent recommendations.

Car service: Uber and Lyft are always good options for transportation. If you are an able-bodied person who enjoys walking, you will likely never need a car to get around Savannah proper. However, if you want to visit the islands around the city or have mobility limitations, ordering a car rarely requires much of a wait. As always, you can order a private car or join a carpool.

As with most things in Savannah, Alligator Soul Restaurant began its life as something else — in this case, a grain warehouse, giving the entire establishment an earthy out-of-time feeling that pairs well with its farm-to-table cuisine. Vegetarians and vegans receive the white glove treatment here; while the menu does include several vegetarian appetizers and small plates, for $28, the chef will prepare a unique, off-menu entrée featuring that day's freshest seasonal vegetables. A primary attraction in Savannah is its record number of historic homes, many of which have been turned into museums. Among them are the Andrew Low House, where the founder of the Girl Scouts grew up; and the Sorrel-Weed House, one of the most haunted places in America.

Neighborhoods to Know

Historic District — North: The southern Historic District is home to one of the most iconic settings in America: Chippewa Square, where Forrest Gump sat and waited for a bus and told his life story. Most travelers will stick to the Historic Districts, both North and South, as they are the most walkable and feature the vast majority of hot tourist spots. The North district meets the river and contains within its bounds City Market, the Jepson Center, famous River Street, and several of Savannah's many House Museums. The Historic Districts are just that: historic! There's no street to walk down that isn't redolent with Savannah's rich history, and it's easy to spend a full day wandering through the neat, cobbled streets looking at 1800s mansions and parks that predate the United States themselves.

Historic District — South: Don't miss the gorgeous fountain in Forsyth Park, or the many House Museums and boutique shops surrounding the park. An easy walk from the river, the Historic District — South starts at Harris St. and extends most of the way down the park. The Andrew Low House (the home of the founder of the Girl Scouts), Flannery O'Conner's childhood home, and the infamously haunted Mercer Williams house are all within this district.

Victorian District: For any architecture lover, the Victorian District is for you. The 50-block neighborhood is lined with historic and beautifully restored homes that make for a nice relaxing sightseeing stroll. Built as the city's first suburb, the area's architecture mainly dates back to the 1800s. The area abuts Forsyth Park and is just south of the Historic Districts.

Thomas Square Streetcar District: Another centrally located neighborhood, just south of the Victorian District, Thomas Square has plenty of history all its own. Designated a National Historic District in 1997, the area is home to over 1,100 historic buildings, making it one of the country's largest such districts. Named after Thomas Square Park in the center of the neighborhood, some people refer to it as "Metropolitan" or "Mid City" due to its central location.

Spring in Savannah is pleasant and warm, though rainy — the area averages around 15-20 days of rain in March through May. However, with the city in full bloom, there are fewer more beautiful times to go; the temperature during these months ranges from 50-84°F, so be sure to check the weather before you pack.

Summer can be muggy and gets hot, but with that heat comes the southern atmosphere most folks delight in when visiting Georgia and other southern states. With music festivals, events, and outdoor dining galore, Summer is a celebratory time to visit Savannah — just make sure you bring your sunscreen and a water bottle, and an umbrella in case of thunderstorms. Temperatures range from 72-92°F on average.

Fall is a pleasant, dry time in Savannah, with temperatures ranging from 50-86°F on average and little rain compared to the rest of the year. Outdoor dining, walking tours, boat rides, and the like should all still be enjoyable. Nights get a bit cooler, so bring layers if you plan to be out and about all day and into the night.

Winter is a wonderful time to visit Savannah, especially if your goal is to escape the more brutal temperatures of the northern part of the country. Temperatures stay between a cool 41°F to a comfortable 65°F on average, so you should have no problem enjoying outdoor activities such as walking tours and hiking.

Trollies make 15 stops in total, including Forsyth Park, City Market , River Street, Madison Square, the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist and Colonial Park Cemetery. If you choose to stay on for the entire ride, the tour takes about 100 minutes. Drivers provide commentary on the city and its sights – a point of praise for most tourgoers. Reviewers suggested riding the entire route at least once before hopping on and off so you can get a sense for the city's history and attractions.

Tours begin at 9 a.m. and depart every 20 minutes until 5 p.m. If you book online in advance, you could score discounted tickets. The tour company also runs a popular nighttime Ghost & Gravestones trolley tour.

Genteel & Bard – Savannah History Tour

Tours depart daily up to four times a day in both the late morning and early afternoon. Tour fees may vary depending on the season. Adventure Tours in Motion – 90-Minuete Segway Tour

Stepping into Savannah is like walking through the pages of history. It is touted as America’s first planned city, masterminded by General James Oglethorpe in 1733. It sets the stage for an enchanting vacation filled with public squares, a mix of historic buildings of different bygone eras, manicured parks, and horse-drawn carriages. It’s where every cobblestone whispers stories of the past, making it not just Georgia’s oldest city but also one of the most alluring destinations in the South. If you’re looking for things to do in Savannah, you have plenty of options.

Take a Historic District Tour

The best way to get a feel for the city is to book a walking tour of the Historic District. This area is known for its beautiful 18th and 19th-century architecture, cobblestone streets, and lush squares. Savannah holds one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the US. Most often, your guide will be a resident and knowledgeable about the area, being able to share stories about past residents and historical events. Guides can also recommend places to eat and what to see next.

If you’d rather have a more leisurely pace, try one of the trolley tours, which offer hop-on and hop-off service, and the driver acts as your tour guide.  Expect to pay around $30 per person for each of these tours.

Try Some Southern Cooking

Savannah is home to plenty of international cuisines and local favorites. However, if you are here for the Southern cooking, you’re in for a treat. Must-tries are local shrimp and grits, fried green tomatoes, fried chicken and waffles, and Savannah Red Rice. If you want to combine history, beer, and food in one location, check out The Crystal Beer Parlour. It has locally brewed beer, tasty Southern and American treats, and a restaurant operating since the early 1930s. 

For homestyle Southern cooking and hospitality, try Mrs Wilkes Dining Room . This eatery features large tables where guests can make new friends while dining with strangers. This is great for solo travelers who may feel awkward dining alone. The menu changes daily, but you can expect staples like fried chicken, okra and tomatoes, butter beans, and collard greens. 

Visit Mercer Williams House Museum and Monterey Square

Savannah has numerous beautiful squares, but this one stands out for a few unique reasons. Notably, it served as a backdrop in the 1997 film  Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil , starring Kevin Spacey and John Cusack, an adaptation of John Berendt’s novel. Encircling the monument dedicated to Casimir Pulaski, the square features meticulously maintained gardens and serene oak trees adorned with Spanish moss. Additionally, the surrounding structures are among Savannah’s oldest, dating back to the 1800s, adding a historical charm to the area.

Mercer House, built in 1868, is now heavily associated with Berendt’s work. However, the strange stories surrounding the historic home are not fictional. This location has witnessed at least three premature deaths. These include the tragic incident in 1969 when 11-year-old Tommy Downs fell from the roof, the 1981 incident where Jim Williams—the current owner at the time—allegedly shot Danny Hansford, his employee, and the death of Williams himself of pneumonia and heart failure, a year after he was acquitted of the crime. Visitors can tour the house, and it’s the subject of many ghost tours in the area.

Walk Through Bonaventure Cemetery

When it comes to Gothic Southern beauty and charm, the Bonaventure Cemetery is the epitome of the aesthetic. Its captivating beauty and elaborate tombstones provide a glimpse into the historical heart of Savannah. Located three miles from the Savannah, it’s well worth the trip. Admission is free. 

The  Bonaventure Historical Society  offers free tours on the second Saturday of the month. You can also use the mobile app to tour by yourself. There is also a daily paid guided  tour  by an experienced guide where you can learn about the history of the 170-year-old cemetery and listen to associated haunted tales. It runs at 10 am and 2 pm daily and costs $30.

See Forsyth Park

For nature lovers, Forsyth Park is one of the top things to do in Savannah. This large city park covers 30 acres. It is famous for its winding walking paths, shady spots perfect for picnics beneath the majestic oaks, and the iconic fountain built in 1858. The fountain is meant to imitate the fountains at the Place de la Concorde in Paris. You’ll also find two children’s playgrounds and a fragrant garden created for blind people.

Try One of Its Water Tours

Summer in the south can be swelteringly hot, so one of the best ways to do things in Savannah is via the water. You have several choices. Savannah Riverboat Cruises offers two historic paddle steamers with various tour options, including traditional Southern fare at their brunch or dinner cruises, plus Gospel and sunset cruises. For a more modern option, Savannah Harbor Cruises offers a Dolphin Eco Tour and a Port Tour.

Walk Down River Street

Over a century ago, you would have seen cotton warehouses forming the vista of River Street. Today, these buildings have been converted into a fun mix of boutiques, antique stores, art galleries, breweries, and restaurants, creating a vibrant hub for locals and visitors.

Sitting in one of the eateries here, you can look out over the river on the warm summer nights and marvel at the paddle steamers or people-watch with a glass of cool iced tea.

Visit Savannah City Market

City Market spans four blocks and comprises nineteen refurbished warehouses. It is a unique center for social and commercial interactions in the core of Savannah’s Historic District. It embodies the Savannah experience, serving as downtown’s vibrant and historic hub, where commerce, creativity, and community converge.

Attend Some Ghost Tours

Like New Orleans , Savannah is one of the top haunted cities in the US. You can expect to hear the history and stories of the inhabitants who once lived here. You’ll find ghost tours in just about every city and town the world over, but in places steeped in history like Savannah, you can expect a lot of options. Therefore, it depends on what sort of tour you prefer.

Walking tours offer a more personal approach, but if you’re not a fan of walking or are limited on time, there’s the Haunted Hearse Tour and Haunted Trolley tours. The pros of the latter are that your group size is limited and you don’t have to crowd on pavements to hear someone speak. Some of the walking tours allow very large groups and will hand out earphones for you to listen to the guide. If you’d rather have a more personalized experience, try Travel Curious or Savannah Tours and Tales .

Check Out Savannah Theatre and Lucas Theatre

The Savannah Theatre dates to 1818 and lays claim to some famous performers, including Oscar Wilde and W. C. Fields.  In the ’50s, it was turned into a movie theater. Today, it still operates as a working theatre with stage productions such as Jersey Boys and Fiddler on the Roof.  Recently, it was featured on The Travel Channel’s paranormal show compliments of the ghostly activity in the building.  

The Lucas Theatre was built as a movie house in the 1920s. The exterior of the building is Spanish Baroque Revival, while the interior is a combination of Art Deco and Greek Revival. It was one of the first public buildings in the US to have air conditioning in 1926 — something that is very welcome in Savannah summers. In the ’70s, it was set to be demolished, but it was finally saved and restored in the ’80s by the newly formed Lucas Theatre for the Arts. Today, it is home to movies and many live performances.

The  Surprisingly Savannah Mobile Tour  is officially underway after debuting in Cincinnati May 25-26 , with sights set for Indiana this weekend .

The tourism marketing venture hopes to inspire visitors from around the United States to experience "their classic charm" and what the city has to offer by making 11 tour stops this summer across multiple states, according to a press release.

A fully immersive marketing experience has been designed to inspire consumers to consider heading to Georgia for their next getaway, focusing on making a stop in Savannah.

"Not only do we want these communities to experience a taste of what Savannah has to offer, we also hope to leave them with a desire to come stay at one of our iconic hotels, enjoy our famous restaurants, and take in the history, art, and culture that make Savannah a truly unique place to visit.," said Joseph Marinelli, President and CEO of Visit Savannah.
