Bali – Lombok – Gili Islands  may be the classic Indonesian "tour," but there is so much more to  Indonesia . With more than 13,000 islands to choose from, the world’s biggest island nation offers an entire playground of adventure.

1. Walk with dragons in Komodo National Park

The Unesco-protected Komodo National Park is literally the domain of living dragons, Indonesia’s apex super-predators. Rinca Island (just east of Komodo) – smaller but more densely populated with particularly aggressive dragons – is one of the most exciting predator territories on the planet in which to trek. It is possible to combine dragons and orangutans in a single tour, taking in some of the natural icons of the world’s second-richest wildlife zones (only the Amazon has greater natural diversity than Indonesia).

2. Climb volcanoes in Java

A third of the world’s active volcanoes are on Indonesian soil. On Java especially, you are rarely out of sight of a smoldering volcano. The mighty Mt Bromo at 2329m (7641ft) is perhaps the most popular to climb – it is best to time your arrival on the summit for sunrise.

At either extreme of the island, you find the equally dramatic Krakatau (accessible by boat from the West Javanese coast) and 2799m-high (9183ft) Gunung Ijen with its ghostly rivers of blue fire caused by burning sulfur. For those who are less fit (or with limited mobility), Tangkuban Perahu volcanic crater at 2084m (6837ft) is accessible by vehicle from Bandung city. It is safest to climb these active volcanoes with an experienced guide or as part of a tour with a responsible operator. 

3. Experience one of the world’s last megalithic cultures in Sumba

The island of Sumba remains almost unknown despite being twice the size of Bali. A unique culture based on ancestor worship has spawned a dramatic megalithic culture where giant tombstones (the largest vastly outweighing the biggest stone at Stonehenge) are moved several kilometers overland by hundreds of laborers. Home also to the ritual (and still occasionally fatal) horseback battles known as the Pasola, Sumba is one of Indonesia’s developing frontiers for adventurous travelers.

4. Visit the mystical Kelimutu Lakes in Flores

Due to a strange quirk of geology, the three sister lakes of Kelimutu in the center of Flores Island  are capable of dramatically changing color over the course of just a couple of days. Local people carefully watch the color transitions of the lake known as Tiwi Ata Mbupu since it is said to be the resting place of demons and the spirits of witches. It is best to stay overnight in the village of Moni, where there are several homestays and hotels (as well as a lovely hot spring) so that you are on the spot to visit the crater lakes around dawn before the mountain mists descend.

There are an estimated 750 species of coral in Indonesian waters (the entire Caribbean has just 70). With much of the richest section of the Coral Triangle – the world’s greatest center for marine biodiversity – lying in Indonesian waters, it is unsurprising that the area is top of the wish list for any diver worth his or her salt. 

Raja Ampat has become known as the Indonesian dive site par excellence and, along with Wakatobi National Park off the bottom of Sulawesi, is known for encounters with whale sharks. Manta rays are another of the main draws, and both at Komodo’s "Manta Alley" and Nusa Penida’s "Manta Point" (just east of Bali), you’re virtually guaranteed to see them.

Anyone who thinks Bali is overrun with tourists and over-developed need only take the drive out beyond Canggu (where the tide of tourists seems to hit its high line). Two hours farther west from here – on a beautiful drive through seemingly endless paddies – you reach Medewi in the heart of West Bali. 

This low-key little surf town is set in the middle of twenty kilometers of deserted black sand beach, which is unmarred even by a single sun-lounger. At Perancak river mouth, you’ll see the world’s most colorful traditional fishing fleet. And on Sunday mornings, the dramatic (but often gory) West Balinese sport of mekepung buffalo-chariot racing takes place across the vast plains of paddies south of Negara town.

Visit the unique otherworldly architecture of Tana Toraja

Hidden in the center of Sulawesi Island,  you find one of the world’s most fascinating cultures. The people of Tana Toraja build spectacular homes – the roofs of which, some say, represent buffalo horns, or ships. (Others say they represent spacecraft!) With its blissful highland climate and spectacular landscapes, Tana Toraja is a wonderful area for hiking, but somewhat bizarrely, the major drawcard lies in the lavish funeral rites that can cost more than US$100,000. Deceased loved ones are considered merely ill until the last rites take place. You may be shocked to be introduced to older people who passed away several years before and yet are still carefully preserved in the family’s front room. Other island highlights include diving in Bunaken National Marine Park and exploring the Minahasa homelands of North Sulawesi.

Visit one of the world’s most spectacular temple ruins

The Unesco-protected Borobudur temple in Central Java  is one of the archaeological wonders of our planet. It is believed to be the biggest (and certainly the most mysterious) Buddhist temple ruin and dates back over 1200 years. Try to stay nearby so you can arrive before first light and climb straight to the upper terrace – called the Sea of Immortality – to watch the spectacular sunrise over the Javanese volcanoes. It is one of the most spiritually powerful experiences that Asia has to offer. Admission to the temple is US$25 per person. 

Sail with the ‘bogeymen’ in a phinisi schooner

The traditional timber sailing schooners built in southern Sulawesi have become part of Humanity's Intangible Cultural Heritage and an icon of Indonesia’s maritime tradition. Built by the Bugis and Konjo people, these boats are known as phinisi (sometimes written as pinisi ). The Bugis were once fearful pirates who plundered much of the archipelago and became a European household name – and the subject of countless childhood nightmares – as the "Bogeymen." This now celebrated fleet of charter vessels – frequently sailing around Sumbawa, Komodo, Maluku, and West Papua… – now represents what is often the only feasible way of accessing some of Indonesia’s remotest islands.

Watch orangutans and track tigers in Sumatra

Gunung Leuser National Park is the best place to see critically endangered Sumatran orangutans. The village of Bukit Lawang – built along the steep Bohorok Valley – is the best place to set up guided trips or join a tour to see the wild apes. But try not to rush your visit because this little community is one of Indonesia’s most pleasant (and most underrated) backpacker hangouts. Kerinci Seblat National Park (despite being almost twice the size of Gunung Leuser) is rarely visited, yet it is home to one of the world’s only healthy – ie, increasing – tiger populations.

Visit Danau Toba and the Batak Highlands

Danau Toba is the world’s biggest crater lake. In the middle of the lake lies Samosir Island (the world’s biggest freshwater island, listed in Guinness World Records as "the world’s biggest island on an island"). There are several unique reasons for visiting this area, but the immensely welcoming – and culturally fascinating – Batak people (once feared as cannibals) are the main drawcard here. Don’t rush a trip to Danau Toba, though. You can rent wonderful Batak houses for just a couple of dollars a night and spend a week or so exploring all parts of the island (including the hot springs and, with permission and a Batak guide, Gunung Pusuk Buhit – the sacred mountain).

But, for many people, Bali is about the island's beautiful beaches . If a beach vacation is what you're looking for, you may want to head to one of Bali's luxury beach resorts and spend some time soaking up the sun.

No trip to Indonesia would be complete without seeing some orangutans, and Borneo is a great place to visit these beautiful and endangered creatures.

Though orangutans still live in the wild, several sanctuaries rescue and protect orangutans as land development infringes on their natural habitat. Tanjung Puting National Park in Kalimantan, the Indonesian-owned part of Borneo, is home to one of the largest orangutan populations in the world, as well as other primates, birds, and reptiles.

Indonesia sits on the Ring of Fire, an area with some of the most active volcanoes in the world. Many of the country's volcanoes, such as Mount Merapi, are famous for their violent eruptions and their stunning, but dangerous beauty.

Mount Bromo is among the best known, thanks largely to its incredible views, particularly when seen standing over the caldera at sunrise. Bromo's peak was blown off in an eruption, and you can still see white smoke spewing from the mountain.

The volcano is part of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park , which also includes Mount Semeru , the highest peak in Java. The park is home to the Tengger people, an isolated ethnic group who trace their ancestry back to the ancient Majapahit empire.

A visit to Tana Toraja in South Sulawesi Province will not only feel like you've stepped far back in time, but also offers a look at the richness and diversity of Indonesia's long-standing cultures.

The architectural style of Tongkonan, boat-shaped houses and other buildings, are immediate standouts, but the people are what make this piece of natural paradise so special. They are, by many accounts, the friendliest and most welcoming people you could hope to meet while traveling.

The Toraja approach to death is one of reverence and celebration. Funerals are elaborate ceremonies involving plenty of food and traditional dance, and the dead are buried in graves built into surrounding caves.

Another of Indonesia's natural wonders, Lake Toba is both a body of water and super volcano. The lake, which sits in a crater, was formed between 69,000 and 77,000 years ago and is believed to have been the result of a catastrophic eruption.

The lake is 1,145 square kilometers and 450 meters deep. Volcanic activity is still regularly recorded here and has pushed some islands above the water's surface.

Surely, the eruption of Indonesia's most famous volcano, Krakatau, in 1883 was the largest in recorded history. The eruption severely impacted climate conditions around the world and took a devastating toll on human life on nearby Java and Sumatra. Anak Krakatau, "Child of Krakatau," is the youngest of the islands formed by the 1883 eruption, and forced itself above the surface in 1930.

This young and volatile volcano continues to rise higher out of the sea and have significant eruptions. Anak Krakatau still belches smoke and fire, and tourists can visit Krakatau's child for a reminder of the awesome, unseen power just beneath the surface at every turn in Indonesia.

The fairlyland of lush, cone-shaped islands set against blue and turquoise waters is one of Indonesia's most spectacular sights. Hundreds of islands and cays make up this tropical paradise, but the beauty extends beneath the surface as well.

Another of Indonesia's famed volcanoes, Gunung Rinjani is a top attraction on Lombok. Rinjani itself does not see the eruptions and activity that some of the others have, but its caldera-forming eruption in the late 13th century is believed to have been one of the most powerful in human history. A lake sits in Rinjani's caldera, and within the lake sits Mt. Baru , another active volcano.

In Rinjani National Park, you may spot animals such as the rare black ebony leaf monkey, long-tailed macaques, the sulfur-crested cockatoo, and other exotic species. Guided treks are available, and you can camp overnight in the park.

The park does caution that treks are strenuous, so if you plan to hike the mountain, you should be in good physical health and be prepared with the appropriate equipment.

This is one of Bali's most popular temples, built on a rock formation in the sea. The original formation began to deteriorate at one point, so a portion of the rock is now artificial. Still, Pura Tanah Lot draws people in droves, particularly in time to catch the sunset.

This temple compound is found on the southern coast of Beraban village, and you can walk out to the temple at low tide. Once the sun goes down, browse the stalls at Tanah Lot market to purchase unique Balinese souvenirs.

Way Kambas National Park

Located in Lampung, Sumatra, the Way Kambas National Park is home to some critically endangered species, including Sumatran elephants, tigers, and rhinoceroses. The park also has an elephant training center with accommodations nearby. It also has mangrove areas, freshwater forests, and a coastline. Baluran National Park

Compared to other national parks that are dominated by lush tropical forests, this location has a dry climate that sustains different sets of plants, birds, and mammals ecosystem. The area covers vast mountainous areas and savanna, where endangered mammals like banteng, Java mouse-deer, fishing cat, Javan leopard, and the Javan lutung roam free. Also in the neighborhood are hundreds of endangered plants and endemic birds. Standing tall at its center is the extinct volcano Mount Baluran. Tourists can sign up for an organized safari tour arranged by the park to ensure a more convenient and safe adventure.

Gunung Leuser National Park

For wildlife enthusiasts who fancy a real jungle experience, this conservation area is among the most pristine and wild in Indonesia, especially the part that belongs to the Special Region of Aceh. The diverse wildlife is thriving, sustained by dense vegetation and untouched nature, leading this location to be referred to as a “complete ecosystem laboratory”. Contrary to confined animals at zoos or some other conservation centers, the orangutans, monkeys, elephants, and rhinoceros in this park are at least semi-wild, or even wild.

Tangkoko National Park

Located in less-traveled eastern Indonesia, this nature reserve does not receive as much credit as it deserves. Sulawesi itself is one of Indonesia’s foremost wildlife fronts, supporting the lives of countless endemic and exotic species. At 8,890 hectares, Tangkoko has more than tourists could ever hope for, including the Sulawesi’s prima donna bird , the Maleo. They live in the rather peculiar habitat of a semi-salt-water lake trapped inside a small island. Tebing Citatah

This magnificent cliff complex remains unknown to many locals. On weekdays, some of the cliffs are occupied by the training military, proving that this is not an adventure for just anyone. In fact, you have to be a certified rock climber to even attempt to ascend to some of the cliffs. But once you do, you’ll have an unrestricted view of the city. Located in Padalarang, Bandung, this spot is near the better-known Pawon Cave and Stone Garden.

Danau Idenberg

Located in the middle of the Jayawijaya ridge, the beauty of Danau Idenberg (Idenberg Lake) is reserved for those who are fit and adventurous enough to reach it. This lake is considered mysterious because sometimes the water overflows, while at other times it appears to be dry. Some mountain climbers have also reported sightings of black swans, considered odd due to the height and atmosphere. The surrounding white-flecked mountaintops are a rare sight in a tropical paradise like Indonesia.

The Most Difficult Places to Visit in Indonesia

22. jomblang and grubug cave, central java.

This vertical cave requires skill, experience, gear and courage to explore. Study and practice single-rope technique before driving to the cave’s mouth. To reach the bottom of the sinkhole–where peculiar ancient species that had never seen the sun dwell–adventurers will have to conquer the slippery vertical drop. Jomblang is actually just part of a massive cave system through the Mount Kidul area, and there’s a pitch black tunnel that will lead you to the adjacent Grubug Cave, with its famous ‘heaven’s light’.

Mount Leuser, Aceh

Hiking this mountain is made difficult by the complicated and unpredictable land—dense untouched jungles, rushing rivers, steep rocks. But the real danger and challenge lies in the wildlife. Even if you stay right on track, there are real possibilities of encountering snakes, bears, even tigers. The summit of Mount Leuser can be reached in about two weeks. The mountain is located in a relatively remote area, and to reach the starting point tourists have to switch flights in the country’s Sharia-governed Aceh Province.

Breueh Island, Aceh

Sabang is the westernmost city of Indonesia. Further to the northwest is Breueh Island, one of the most beautiful and remote islands in the region. To reach it you’ll have to find a fisherman on a nearby island who doesn’t mind taking extra passengers, as there’s no ferry or organized boat operators there.

Lake Kaco, Jambi

This mystical lake has become somewhat like a fairy-tale, as not many tourists are prepared to traverse 500 kilometers of jungle between the lake and the nearest town, Jambi. The road trip takes at least 10 hours, followed by four hours of walking through dense jungles. The luminescent lake is approximately 30 meters wide and surrounded by lush jungle. Although the opulent blue water is breathtaking, Lake Kaco is even more mystical at night, when the surface of the water reflects the moonlight like a mirror. Daring adventurers can swim in this mysterious lake, but don’t expect to see its bottom. Nobody has ever dived to the bottom.

Siroktabe Island, North Sumatra

This remote island off the coast of Sumatra offers the ultimate survival adventure, with no facilities whatsoever — no homestays, toilet, or kitchen, let alone electricity or communication networks. Adventurers will have to rely on their own wits to find transportation to this island, whether by convincing a fisherman to take them or finding a tour operator (although there are only a couple that will go here). Don’t attempt to canoe your way to this virgin, idyllic island, though. It’s not even on Google Maps. Daredevils can enjoy the whole island and have the vast white stretch of beach for themselves.

Baliem Valley, Papua

The remote location and challenging landscape make a trip to Baliem Valley not only difficult but also very expensive. The flight to the nearest airport alone costs significantly more than flights to any other town in the country, and switching flights will be necessary. Baliem Valley is just an entry point to a whole other world of wonderful, mesmerizing, and largely unknown cultures of Papua. Tourists will have to hire a local guide to get through the dense forests to the villages, where indigenous tribes live.

10 Top Tourist Attractions in Indonesia

Indonesia is a huge country, in both population and land area, with significant cultural and geological diversity. With 18,110 islands, 6,000 of them inhabited, it is the largest archipelago in the world. The population of around 240 million people is derived from 300 ethnic groups who speak over 250 different languages. While Bali is usually the destination most familiar to foreign visitors, there is a wealth of other top tourist attractions in Indonesia to discover in this vast and varied country.

10. Lake Toba [SEE MAP]

Lake Toba on the island of Sumatra is an immense volcanic lake about 100 kilometers long and 30 kilometers wide. Formed by a gigantic volcanic eruption some 70,000 years ago, it is the largest resurgent caldera on Earth. Genetic estimates suggests that there were only a few thousand humans that survived the catastrophe. The island in the middle – Pulau Samosir – is the largest island within an island and contains two lakes. Besides visiting “a lake on an island within a lake on an island” tourist also come here to kick back and relax and swim in the volcanically warmed waters.

9. Tanjung Puting [SEE MAP]

The Tanjung Puting National Park is located on the island of Borneo in the Indonesian province of Central Kalimantan. The park is a popular ecotourism destination, with many local tour companies offering multi-day boat tours to view wildlife and visit the research centers. Wildlife include gibbons, macaques, clouded leopards, sun bears, pythons, crocodiles and – most famously – orangutans. Unfortunately the park is heavily threatened by illegal logging and forest clearing for agricultural uses.

8. Baliem Valley [SEE MAP]

The Baliem Valley in the highlands of Western New Guinea offers a glimpse into what was recently a stone-age world. The valley was not known to the outside world until 1938 when an aerial reconnaissance flight southwards from Hollandia (now Jayapura) discovered a large agricultural population. Wamena is the starting point for most visitors who come nowadays to marvel at the mountain views, roaring rivers, tribal villages and at the tough but sweet spirit of the warm Dani people.

7. Mount Bromo [SEE MAP]

Gunung Bromo is an active volcano and part of the Tengger massif, in East Java. At 2,329 meters (7,641 feet) it is not the highest peak of the massif, but it is the most well known. The area is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Indonesia and Java. The top of the volcano has been blown off and the crater inside constantly belches white smoke. It is surrounded by the Sea of Sand of fine volcanic sand. The overall effect is unsettlingly unearthly.

6. Bunaken [SEE MAP]

Located at the north of the island of Sulawesi, Bunaken is one of Indonesia’s most famous dive and snorkeling areas. The island is part of the Bunaken Marine Park where you can see more than 70% of all fish species that live in the western Pacific ocean. The best time for diving in Bunaken is between the months of April and November.

5. Torajaland [SEE MAP]

Torajaland (Tana Toraja) is a highland region of South Sulawesi, home of the Toraja people. Torajans are famous for their massive peaked-roof houses known as tongkonan and spectacular but gruesome funeral rites. After a person’s death, the body is kept – often for several years – until the actual funeral ceremony which can last for several days. The deceased is then finally buried in a small cave or in a hollow tree.

4. Gili Islands [SEE MAP]

Lombok’s most popular tourist destination, the Gili Islands are an archipelago of three small islands: Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air. The islands are very relaxed and laid-back, with countless little beachside cafes still playing reggae and no cars or motorbikes to disturb the peace. Note that the name “Gili Islands” is rather redundant as gili simply means “small island” in Sasak and there are many other islands around the coast of Lombok with Gili in their names.

3. Komodo National Park [SEE MAP]

The Komodo National Park is a national park located within the Lesser Sunda Islands that includes the three larger islands Komodo, Padar and Rincah, and 26 smaller ones. The park is named after the Komodo Dragon, the world’s largest living reptile that can reach 3 meters or more in length and weigh over 70kg. Although Komodo dragons eat mostly carcass of dead animals, they are formidable predators and will also hunt prey including birds, and mammals. Attacks against humans are very rare.

2. Borobudur [SEE MAP]

Located 40 km (25 miles) northwest of Yogyakarta on Java, the Borobudur is the one of the most famous Buddhist temple in the world. The Borobudur was built over a period of some 75 years in the 8th and 9th centuries by the kingdom of Sailendra, out of an estimated 2 million blocks of stone. It was abandoned in the 14th century for reasons that still remain a mystery and for centuries lay hidden in the jungle under layers of volcanic ash. Today it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Indonesia.

Perched among stunning terraced rice fields, Ubud is considered the cultural heart of Bali and one of the top tourist attractions in Indonesia. There are dance and music performances every day throughout the city as well as numerous art galleries and craft shops to explore. Although Ubud has long been valued as a great place to learn about Balinese culture, tourism in Ubud boomed exponentially in the last decades. Fortunately, it only takes a short walk or bicycle ride to escape from the crowds and commercialism.

I agree with Azzam Rais. Raja Ampat is beautiful, also considered to be ‘the last paradise on earth’ – don’t know about that, but it was breathtaking for sure. We went diving in Raja Ampat (they called it R4) and went with live aboard started from Sorong. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience. We went diving before on other places like the Caribbean but Raja Ampat was something else.

Great list. So many beautiful places in Indonesia since Indonesia has 17,000-ish islands. Anyways, The Baliem Valley looks very unique. Hopefully can visit that place someday.

I haven’t visited Indonesia in 30 years. My last visit was a few days in Jakarta with a H.S. exchange student friend, a trip to Surabaya for three days, four days in Bali and then flew into Solo and took a bus to Jokjakarta. They were very friendly to Americans in 1981.

I am a bit concerned about the general attitude towards Western tourists but would love to return to Bali and Jokjakarta.

For me, Borobudur Temple is an amazing creation. The size is so big and high. You need extra energy to climb the temple to the top.

After several journeys through Indonesia I have seen most of the above mentioned attractions. However, the Gilis are my personal favourite. Especially the tiny island of Gili Air allows to relax in a certain way, that I could not find at any other place, not only in Indonesia.

With all that beauty considered, Indonesia is a massive country with an endless array of islands and archipelagos worth exploring. How on earth does one choose just a few places to visit when presented with tens of thousands of options?

One of the oldest (and largest) Hindu temples in Indonesia, the history of the Besakih Temple dates back to megalithic times, when the original structure was built around a central holy rock. It’s not known as The Mother Temple of Bali for no reason. 

Like many temples, this one is shrouded in history and mystical legend. I won’t even try to begin to explain its origins and evolution – you’ll simply have to visit to learn more. But what I can tell you is that this temple is one of the most beautiful places in Indonesia.

As you walk towards the steep stairs of the temple, you’ll be overwhelmed by the scent of tropical greenery and the sounds of buzzing bugs and birds. It’s located on the side of Mount Agung, the iconic volcano that towers over the island. With its fertile volcanic soil, the temple is naturally surrounded by never-ending jungles of lush plants and grasses. 

Whatever your faith (or lack thereof), visiting this temple is a spiritual experience for all who visit. I’m telling you, there is something otherworldly about this location. No wonder it’s still an important place of worship for the Balinese Hindu community.

If you’re backpacking in Bali , hitting up Ubud is a must, it’s like an unwritten law, I guess! Located in the center of Bali, this place really captures the heart and soul of this peaceful island.

The small yet busy town is surrounded by tropical jungles and terraced rice fields. You could spend weeks exploring the stunning rice terraces (the Tegalalang Rice Terrace is no doubt the most famous), swinging over the valleys on some of the famous Ubud swings, and visiting iconic temples in the area.

Ubud is the cultural capital of Bali, overflowing with art galleries, small boutiques, and traditional marketplaces. Other than culture and history, this is also where you will find some of the most impressive waterfalls on the island . Sure, they might be more crowded here than up north, but this doesn’t make them any less spectacular.

Visit the Ubud Monkey Forest for a really unusual experience. This small forest park is teeming with cheeky monkeys. Just make sure to hold onto your hats and phones, as these monkeys are known to have a thing for stealing!

For a change of pace, join a yoga class or wellness retreat in Ubud. Take it from me: you’ll leave with a new understanding of the word “zen.”

Nestled in the misty mountains of the Island of Flores, Wae Rebo is a traditional village that has earned itself a spot on the UNESCO Asia Pacific Heritage list . This destination is exceptionally secluded, adding an adventurous touch to your Indonesian backpacking journey .

Home to the Manggarai tribe, this tiny village is surrounded by a dense tropical Todo forest packed with orchids, plant life, singing birds, and other endemic animals.

The most defining characteristic of the village is the unique houses, called Mbaru Niang, which are covered in thatch from the roof to the ground. Every house has five levels, each for a separate purpose – cooking, socializing, sacred gatherings, and sleeping. Today, it’s the only village in the country that maintains these traditional Manggarai houses . 

A single ancestor named Empu Maro founded the village over 100 years ago, with some of the current residents being 18th-generation descendants. Basically, this means the Manggarai tribe have kids super early. Do the math!

love to feel like I’m visiting an island where people actually live,  stay with locals , and actually immerse myself in their culture.

One of my favorite things, and in my opinion, what makes this one of the most unique places to visit in Indonesia, is the lack of phone reception and limited electricity (only available between 6 pm and 10 pm). This gives you a real opportunity to switch off and reconnect with yourself and the surrounding nature. 

The Mentawai Islands are bestknown to surfers around the world. Isolated and off the beaten track doesn’t even begin to describe this string of islands. 

It can be a hack to get here, which makes it super uncrowded and all the more beautiful in return. First, you’ll have to fly to Padang on the island of Sumatra (likely via Jakarta) and then get a ferry into the islands. You might even need to catch a small local long boat to get to certain islands in this beautiful place in Indonesia. It’s all part of the journey.

Famous with surfers across the world, the islands are suitable for anyone on the hunt for crystal clear water, soft white sand, a slow pace of life, and all-around good vibes. First order of business: Secure the perfect surfboard , then ride the waves.

The Mentawai Islands aren’t the best spot for solo travelers , though, since there isn’t much socializing to be done around the islands. However, if you’re traveling in a group or with family, add the Ments – as we call them – to your list.

Surfing isn’t the only activity on the islands. You can also trek through the inner island jungles, snorkel, dive, and learn about the local island culture. The underwater scenery certainly offers the most in these parts, with some of the most spectacular dive sites in the world.

Kelimutu Lakes might just be some of the most dramatic-looking volcanic lakes in the world. They are also some of the most visited lakes in the country , and rightfully so.

What you might not know is that Kelimutu Lakes are actually a collective name given to three different crater lakes created by the same volcano. Each of the three lakes is a different color – blue, white, and red. 

The most spectacular (and, of course, most photographed) is the blue lake, which shimmers an incredible turquoise that is hard to put into words. 

The best way to experience this place in all its natural beauty is to hike or trek to the summit . Sunsets and sunrises here are unreal, and I really advise you to try to plan your trip to avoid the midday heat. Unfortunately, swimming is not allowed in the toxic sulphuric water (not to mention the steep cliffs). Otherwise, a cool-off dip would have been ideal.

The lakes’ colors and intensity change by the minute, so manage your expectations. That said, when it comes to beautiful places in Indonesia, the lakes really are in a league of their own. 

If you’re mapping out your Lombok itinerary , you’ve got to know about the Gili Islands. A string of islands located just off the west coast of Lombok and just a short ferry ride from Bali, the three main islands are called Gili Trawangan (Gili T, for short), Gili Meno, and Gili Air.

Gili T is the largest island, although calling it large would be an overstatement. All three islands are small enough to walk around on foot and have no car traffic, meaning the best way to get around is by walking or cycling. And oh boy, do we love an island with no traffic!

The islands are known for three main things: snorkeling and diving, the beaches, and the nightlife. The nightlife is best in Gili T, where just about every street corner is buzzing with activity.

Learning to dive or snorkel over the reefs are the two most common activities. Take that snorkeling boat trip , and you’ll see just why Gili Island’s underwater world is just incredible!

If you’re up for even more water-related adventures , there are plenty of places where you can rent a SUP, go on kayaking day trip tours, kite surf, or wakeboard. Basically, you’re going to want to bring as little clothing and as many bathing suits as possible on this trip…

A quick Google search of these islands will have you gawking at your screen. Seriously, it’s impossible to put this incredible tropical island into words. That said, I’ll give it the best I can…

Set in a secluded part of the archipelago, Raja Ampat is one of Indonesia’s premier diving destinations in the Coral Triangle . The triangle stretches from the Phillippines to Malaysia and Indo, but there are few places within it that can compete with the beauty of Raja Ampat. 

It’s true that the islands are the best for diving and snorkeling. But the thing is, these islands are just as beautiful above the surface as the coral reefs beneath them. 

The island of Kri is the most popular for tourists, with plenty of accommodation and dive center options. However, if you have the cash to spare, do yourself a favor and book a boat charter for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

A dream come true for island-hoppers, bird watchers, and general fans of exquisite views and vistas, Raja Ampat is as remote as it is beautiful – and let’s be honest, the two are directly related.

While you might have heard of the island chains mentioned above, chances are the Bangka Belitung Islands are new to you. This province of islands located off the coast of southeastern Sumatra includes two main islands, surrounded by smaller ones. 

They fall slightly off the beaten track and, thankfully, off the radar of many tourists, purely because of their remoteness and distance to get there. Admin aside, the islands are considered one of the most beautiful places in Indonesia for their unique granite boulders and palm tree-lined beaches. Sign us up!

Tanjung Tinggi Beach offers the perfect combination of white sand, smooth boulders, and crystal-clear water. For a slice of history, make sure to visit the Museum Kata Andrea Hirata , a colorful museum that represents the journey of literature and learning in the region. 

On the island of Belitung, the Danau Kaolin Belitung Lake was formed by mining activity in the area. Today, water from the bright blue, turquoise lake is used to produce paper, cosmetics, and even food.

It’s an interesting place to learn about the local industries, and it doesn’t hurt that it doubles as one of the most uniquely beautiful places in the country.

Likely already high on your list of places to visit in Indonesia, Komodo National Park is truly deserving of a place on this list. Comprised of a string of three exotic islands, each island is preserved and protected for these magnificent dragons to thrive.

In an otherworldly landscape of dry bushes, rugged cliffs, and barren rocks, roam the mighty Komodo Dragons. Where else in the world can you see totally wild prehistoric creatures that have their own entire region to roam free?

And let me tell you, these massive lizards aren’t the only interesting thing about the islands. The three islands, named Komodo, Padar, and Rinca, each have beautiful views, beaches, lush coastal hills, and, of course, are ringed by a thriving and colorful coral reef system. 

Once you’ve had your taste of Jurassic Park, head to the famous Pink Sand Beach on Komodo Island to experience an entirely different side of the islands. The pink hue of the sand comes from microscopic red organisms that live in the coral reefs. 

After they die, they get washed up on the beach and turn the sand pink. Neat, right?! While it isn’t the only pink beach in the country, these beaches are typically super rare.

Taking a step away from the tropical beaches and islands, Tana Toraja is one of the most unique places to visit in Indonesia for a few reasons. 

First of all, the region set in the highlands of South Sulawesi offers a majestic mountain backdrop surrounded by lush jungles and picture-perfect local villages.

Famous for its incredible hiking trails , Tana Toraja is as popular with nature enthusiasts as it is with activity devotees. Begin your day by watching the sun rise over the misty hills as you explore the villages and mountainside. What a dream!

Second, the area is also known for its mystical tribal funeral customs . In an uncommon practice, the dead are not considered truly dead (in modern medical terms). Here, the departed are considered to be sick, or makula, as they say. 

The makula – sick (or dead, as a doctor would say), are placed in a sealed coffin inside the family home until the family has saved up enough money for a decent funeral procession. Funerals depend on the social status of a family, with the most wealthy funerals including hundreds of animal sacrifices.

You can visit the Londa Burial Caves for an eerily beautiful and educational experience. Suitable for fans of anthropology and beautiful places. Not suitable for the easily creeped out…

One of the best volcanoes in Indonesia , Mount Bromo is an active somma volcano that forms part of the Tengger Mountains (a series of other volcanoes).

It’s one of the most famous volcanoes in the world because of its otherworldly landscape. And by this, I mean some of the most quintessential volcanic imagery you could dream up. The Derawan Islands comprise 31 islands surrounded by coral reefs and islets that form part of the Coral Triangle . They are famous for their biodiversity of coral, invertebrates, and protected marine species, including the giant clam, coconut crab, and sea turtles.

Once the site of the largest volcanic eruption on the planet, some 74 thousand years back, Lake Toba is now a beautiful lake that could give Lake Como a run for its money.

Surrounded by panoramic views, beaches, waterfalls, and hot springs, there are plenty of places to explore and adventure around this peaceful Sumatran lake.

If you squint your eyes, you might think the Baluran National Park was a game reserve in the African Sahara. The area has a dry climate that consists mostly of savanna.

Add to that white sand beaches, a coral reef of dreams, and more animals than you can imagine, and we have ourselves one of the most unique places to visit in Indonesia.

Dedicated to honoring the Hindu Goddess of learning, literature, and art, Saraswati Temple is a beautiful place to visit in the sacred village of Ubud.

The beautiful temple is surrounded by a water garden of ponds dotted with blossoming water lilies. Decorated with fine carvings and etchings, it only makes sense that the temple is dedicated to art.

As you can imagine, Indonesia’s transport options consist of lots and lots of boats. Ferries, local transport boats, and speed boats – there are endless ways to travel across the seas from island to island. A ferry from Lombok to Gili Trawangan takes around half an hour and costs between $10 and $20 in each direction.

When it comes to traveling long distances from region to region, flying is usually the best option. It’s much quicker and often inexpensive when traveling on budget airlines like Lion Air, Citilink, and Garuda Indonesia . A flight from Bali to Jakarta would cost you around $30 – $35 in one direction and take under two hours. Easy-peasy.

When on a local island like Bali or Lombok, the best way to get around is to rent a scooter (although controversially not the safest). That said, it’s super cheap (less than $5 per day to rent), and people do drive super slowly. Renting a car is another great option if you’re traveling in a group.

From moss-clad temples to gushing waterfalls to some of the trippiest coral reefs on the planet, there really is an incredible amount of places to visit and things to do in Indonesia. Cutting this list down would be an impossible task; however, if I had to recommend you visit only one of these places, it would be the Raja Ampat Islands.  

Less popular than the Gili’s, this tropical paradise is a haven for wildlife – both on land and underwater, and is easily one of the most striking places I’ve had the honor of visiting.

If you are in Bali and you want to go off-beat, go to Nusa Penida. This island and neighboring Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan islands are so close to Bali yet remain vastly untouristic. The highlights here are jaw-dropping cliffed coastlines surrounded by pristine waters. You can go on a day cruise from Bali. Better yet, spend a night or two in one of many amazing tree houses on Nusa Penida.

How to go :

Nusa Penida is one hour away from mainland Bali by ferry. You can catch a ferry from Sanur Beach in Denpasar & Padang Bai in East Bali. From the ferry landing in Nusa Penida, the best beaches can be reached on a day tour around the island.

Found in central Java, Yogyakarta is just hour east of Jakarta & 1.5 hours west of Bali by plane. Yogyakarta-Adisutjipto International Airport is the primary gateway to the city. It’s located in the city center while the temples are within an easy drive away.

You can fly directly from Singapore (2.5 hours) on AirAsia as well as major airports in the country including Jakarta (1 hour), Bali (1.5 hours), Medan (3 hours), Bandung (1 hour), Surabaya (Surabaya). And, even from Lombok (2 hours), Balikpapan (2 hours), or Makassar (2 hours). All major domestic airlines operate flights to Yogyakarta including Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, Citilink, Wings Air, Silk Air, and Batik Air.

4. Mount Bromo

Mount Bromo can be found in Central Java. The most popular way is to travel to Probolinggo by land from Surabaya, Banyuwangi, Yogyakarta, Jakarta or other cities on the island. Then, ride a bus or shuttle to Cemoro Lawang village, the main tourist area in Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park. A jeep or motorcycle taxi (ojek) ride to the base of the summit takes less than 30 minutes. And, a 30-minute to 1-hour ascent on steep stairs, takes you to the crater rim. You can also reach Cemoro Lawang via Malang, located west of Mount Bromo. Although public transport is quite limited, this can be a good option if you’re headed from Yogyakarta. The way to Cemoro Lawang passes through the scenic village of Ngadas, Mount Bromo’s savannah, and the sea of sand.

Labuan Bajo is 1.5 hours east of Bali by plane. Komodo Airport is the main airport that serves Labuan Bajo and this side of Flores in East Nusa Tenggara Province. The drive to the town center usually takes 20 minutes or less. You can also fly direct from Jakarta. Travel time takes 2.5 hours. Bali-Labuan Bajo flights are operated by Garuda Indonesia, Wings Air, Kal Star & Lion Air. Meanwhile, the Jakarta-Labuan Bajo route is operated only by Garuda Indonesia.

7. Gili Islands

Lombok Island is Bali’s less touristic and much larger neighbor. It is famous for the pristine Gili Islands and Mount Rinjani in the north, and Kuta (Lombok) Beach, a surfing haven, in the south. If you want to explore the country beyond Bali, go east to Lombok to enjoy nature, witness the distinct traditions of the Sasak people, and experience a different side of Indonesia.

Lombok is the next big island east of Bali. Lombok International Airport is the primary gateway to the island. It is easily accessible by flight from Bali (30 minutes), Jakarta (2 hours) and Surabaya (1 hour and 15 minutes). You can also fly direct from Singapore (2 hours, 45 minutes) and Kuala Lumpur (3 hours, 15 minutes). Mount Ijen is one of Indonesia’s unique trekking destinations. It is famous for electric blue lava-like rivers of light a.k.a the “blue flames” that is best seen when it’s still dark. 15 Best Places to Visit in Indonesia

Elsewhere, the roaring surf swells of Bali and Lombok draw long-haired board riders from afar; the shimmering coral gardens of the Nusa Tenggara are a mecca for SCUBA sorts and free divers; cold Bintang beers flow in the scorching tropical sun of the gorgeous Gilis, and swinging orangutans inhabit the primeval forests of Borneo. Yep, Indonesia is a cocktail of sprawling megalopolises and smoke-belching volcanos like nowhere else on earth.

Lets explore the best places to visit in Indonesia :

1. Gili Islands

A trio of picture-perfect islands that string their way out between Lombok and Bali in the middle of the Nusa Tenggara archipelago, the Gilis are oft hailed as the most quintessential tropical spots on the planet.

The two smaller islands, Gili Air and Gili Meno, are secluded and laid-back; places where the occasional bamboo ecolodge hides in the mangroves and stretches of shell-spotted sand eke down to a sea of aquamarine blue.

The largest island, Gili Trawangan, is a livelier affair.

Its ramshackle bars are built of driftwood, and pulse with the energy of backpackers from all over the globe.

By day, these guys sizzle off their hangovers on the pearly beaches, or hit the seas in search of rare turtles.

By night, they guzzle beers and buckets and party till dawn.

A place that really needs no introduction, Bali has long been a mecca for travelers eager to sample the mysterious east.

And while the influx of Aussies and Brits has taken its toll on spots like Kuta in the south, there do remain pockets of the earthy, aga (ancient) Bali here too.

Check out the jungle-shrouded town of Ubud in the heart of the regency; a place of cascading rice paddies and crumbling Hindu shrines now taken over by crab-eating macaques.

Or, go north to the great volcanos of Kintamani, to watch the sunrise over Lombok isle in the east.

Alternatively, you could just surf and party your days away on the beaches of Bukit and Nusa Dua – it’s all good!

Lombok has risen and risen out of obscurity in the last couple of decades to become something of the thinking man’s alternative to Bali.

With less of the gaudy bars and super clubs of Kuta, this one retains the rustic, ramshackle feel of old Indonesia.

Make a beeline for salt-washed Senggigi on the western shore.

Here, traditional warung (homey local taverns) serve up spicy noodle fries and peanut-packed sate dishes close to the shore.

There are surfing opportunities aplenty too, from Kuta Lombok in the south to the pretty coves that fringe the coconut groves all along the west coast.

4. Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta sits in a well-deserved fourth place here, thanks largely to its artsy character and cultural richness.

Nestled between the great Buddhist rises of Borobudur – perhaps Indo’s best-known UNESCO site – and the rising volcanic domes of Central Java, it’s a place steeped in heritage.

Check out the sprawling Kraton, which was once the stomping ground of Java’s sultans of old.

This huge palace come museum is now packed with opulent carriages and pleasure gardens where the king’s harems once resided.

Yogya is also known for its traditional craft markets, which erupt on Pasar Beringharjo and Kranggan each day – just try not to stay up drinking in the backpacker bars if you want to catch the best bargains!

Sprawling, seething Jakarta is home to more than nine million people (and there are a whopping 30 million people in the greater metro area besides!), making it a heady and frenetic place to get to grips with Indonesia.

But between the shimmering skyscrapers and raucous food courts of this massive megalopolis, it’s quite easy to discover some genuine charm and interest.

Take the colossal Monas monument, which can’t be missed at 137-meters high, or the enchanting Kota Tua old town, where Dutch colonial mansions mix with the twisting fumes of purring scooters.

At night, the traveler bars of Jalan Jaksa are the best place to be.

6. Borobudur

Colossal stupas carved from graphite-hued stone tower overhead; mysterious reliefs depicting old Buddhist tales mark the rocks in front.

And on the horizon, the belching smoke trails of Central Java’s mighty volcanos issue steam and sulfur into the mountain chains.

Welcome to Borobudur: perhaps the single most famous UNESCO World Heritage Site in all of Indonesia.

Yep, this awesome 8th-century wonder still reigns as the largest Buddhist site on the globe.

It actually fuses motifs from Hinduism into its architecture, and today travelers are invited to gawp at the multitude of massive pagodas, the intricate murals, and the sheer ambition of the ancient undertaking.

7. Raja Ampat

Raja Ampat is the patchwork of turquoise seas and kaleidoscopic coral reefs that every SCUBA diver dreams of.

Located way off-the-beaten-track, it fragments from the side of Papua on the extreme eastern – and unexplored – edge of the Indonesian archipelago.

Hardly visited at all, the place is wild and rugged, comprised of more than 1,000 individual rocks that rise dramatically from the shimmering ocean as mangroves and primeval jungles encrust their bases.

The large islands of Waigeo and Batanta are two of the top spots, and are now laden with dive organizers offering trips into the crystal-clear waters.

Sun-baked Komodo is a wild and inhospitable place.

Isolated out between the cobalt seas and corals of the Lesser Sunda chain, it’s famed primarily as the home of the world’s largest living lizard: the aptly-named Komodo dragon.

However, that great stalking beast is just one of the attractions, and today travelers come to witness the rugged hills and dust-caked backcountry as it tumbles down to pink-hued beaches and shore waters laden with rays, sea turtles, pygmy seahorses and rainbowfish.

Aside from that, sea kayaking around the rocky headlands is also becoming popular – expect wild, empty coves that few have ever explored before you!

The second-largest city in the nation is a charmer compared to the capital.

Dotted with swaying palm trees and enfolded by the misty peaks of wild Western Java, it’s got an enviable location in the cool highlands of the country.

Add to that a rich tradition of batik fabric making, along with a smorgasbord of local food delights (the steamed bakso tahu in tofu and peanut sauce is simply to die for!), and it’s easy to see why this one’s such a hit on the traveler circuit.

Oh, and there are oodles of flowing tea plantations just on the outskirts of town – go to Ciwidey or Pangalengan if you fancy a fresh cuppa!

10. Bukit Lawang

Bukit Lawang is the gateway to the domain of the orangutan.

Located deep in the jungles of northern Sumatra, the place is a rustic affair; made up of just a few bamboo-built longhouses and riverside teahouses.

It’s typically laden to the brim with ecotourists and backpackers, who flit between the palm-shaded gardens of the town and the wild reaches of the Gunung Leuser National Park, where safari walks promise encounters with baboons and Thomas leaf monkeys, not to mention chances to follow the tracks of the elusive (and critically endangered) Sumatran tiger to boot!

11. Labuan Bajo

Labuan Bajo has traditionally been seen as just a convenient stepping stone between the popular haunts of the Nusa Tenggara and the untrodden volcanic ranges and forests of Flores in the east.

However, thanks to its clutch of picture-perfect tropical islands (located just a short boat ride from the harbor), the golden sands of beaches like Pede and Binongko, and excellent connections to Indonesia’s other great cities and sights (think Komodo Island), it’s now a fully-fledged destination in its own right.

You can fill your time with trekking to crater lakes or diving in the crystalline seas, explore the gushing Cunca Wulang Waterfall or boat across to beautiful Seraya Kecil isle.

12. Samarinda

The eastern gem of Samarinda straddles two worlds.

On the one side of town there are throbbing bazaars, awash with carved wooden trinkets from the tribal world of Kalimantan and beset by stacks of intricate handmade batik.

That all exists below the soaring spires of the city mosque, and is ringed by dusty streets of chattering locals.

And on the flip side comes the industry, which, for Samarinda, means coal.

The town’s array of smoke-belching mines has caused numerous problems on the environmental front, and even spawned some unsavory-looking shopping centers.

Still though, Samarinda remains a great riverside stop-off in the midst of wild Borneo.

13. Surabaya

Don’t expect to be wowed into submission by sprawling Surabaya straight away.

Trust us: It takes time to get to know this megalopolis of nearly nine million people on the edge of East Java.

First, you’ll need to get past the incessant stream of tooting traffic and the fumes of industry and business.

And when you do, only then can you go in search of treasures like the elegant Dutch mansions that pepper the Chinatown district (one of the biggest Chinatowns in the world no less). There’s also the artsy rooms and coffee shops of the House of Sampoerna to explore, not to mention the bustling markets and spice-scented food courts of G-Walk after dark.

14. Tana Toraja

Delve into the earthy tribal cultures of South Sulawesi with a trip to the enthralling town of Tana Toraja.

One of the strongholds of the indigenous Toraja peoples of the jungle-dressed mountain ranges here, the place is imbued with the striking Tongkonan houses of the locals.

This is probably one of the most famous and the best places to visit in Indonesia . With divine beaches and stunning marine life, Lombok Island is a majestic island that has a plethora of places to explore. It is located east of Bali and west of Sumbawa, part of the Lesser Sunda Island chain. This place is blessed with scenic beaches and it’s a much-needed escape that tourists need. Bali’s next-door neighbour, it is home to Indonesia’s second largest volcanic peaks, Mount Rinjani. This island offers many extraordinary experiences to explore the magical underwater world of Indonesia .

North Sulawesi is one of the hidden gems of Indonesia, a province located on the island of Sulawesi.

The gorgeous cliffed  coastlines are surrounded by beautiful waters making for a sight to behold! An interesting thing is that you can take a day cruise from Bali to reach the islands and have a unique experience in one of the best  tourist places in Indonesia.

Tips : Plan your stay in a tree house and don’t miss out on the exciting adventurous activities. The place is also wholesome and houses temples, beaches, museums, and a lot more!

Indonesia is one of my favourite places in Asia.

It’s full of amazing places to see, things to do, people to meet and culture to experience.

The great thing about planning a trip to Indonesia is how diverse it is, from the temples of Java to the beaches of Bali, there’s something for everyone. 

So, for some inspiration on your Indonesia holiday, check out my guide to our 8 favourite places to visit in Indonesia.

1. Yogyakarta, East Java 

Located on the island of Java, Jogjakarta is a fast growing backpacker destination in Indonesia. This is due to it’s amazing temples. There are actually lots of great things to do and see in Yogyakarta, but most people visit for the two main temples: Borobudur and Prambanan temple.

Both are stunning in their own right, but my favourite of the two is Prambanan temple. Borobudur is great for a sunrise tour though, and it’s a real bucket list moment. 

Yogyakarta is also super cheap with friendly locals and it’s fairly easy to get around and to it thanks to it’s airport and the great train service across Java. 

Definitely one of the best places to visit in Indonesia.

2. All of Bali 

I could start naming specific areas of Bali that you should visit, but in all honesty, I think you should see it all. For a great night out and beginner waves, you can visit Kuta, for stunning temples and sunsets, make your way to Uluwatu, for blue waters, hit up Balangan beach, for the most stunning rice terraces, visit Sideman and for epic waterfalls, head up to the very north of Bali! 

You’ll need a good 3 weeks to see everything in Bali and make sure you see it all well. 

Bali is actually a unique island in Indonesia. It’s the only non-Muslim island in the whole country. This has actually caused some tensions in the past, but it’s generally peaceful. 

Bali is a bucket list destination for many people and it’s no surprise why. I’ve been twice, hence why it's on this list of the best places to visit in Indonesia.

3. Bandung, West Java 

Bandung is located on the island of Java and it was actually a random stop for us in Java because it’s not very touristy. Which really is the main reason I wanted to visit. I ended up really liking Bandung, not the center of the city itself, but once you rent a moped (or a grab driver) and head out to the countryside you’re greeted with amazing, beautiful tea fields, stunning flower parks, a floating market and much more. 

It’s super super cheap and because it’s so high up, it’s actually got a cooler climate which is nice (that’s why you can grow tea there!)

4. Malang, East Java 

Ah, Malang, another one of my favourite places to visit in Indonesia. The main attractions in Malang are the famous rainbow village which is colourful, unique and honestly makes for a fantastic drone photo! 

Not only that, once you rent a moped and head out of the city, you’ll find one of the best waterfalls in all of Indonesia. Worth the journey and very beautiful! 

Malang is also the base for sunrise tours to Mount Bromo, which honestly is the best sunrise experience I’ve ever had in my life. If you only ever do one thing on a trip to Indonesia, then make a sunrise Bromo tour the thing you do.

5. Nusa Penida 

Nusa Penida is an island off Bali and technically it’s part of Bali, but it’s not on the main Bali island, so it’s another place to visit in Indonesia. You have to get a boat there but it’s a beautiful island. 

The tourism on this island is really exploding and more and more hotels and restaurants are popping up, which thankfully means they’re fixing the roads, which are a disaster by the way! 

The beaches in Nusa Penida are crystal clear blue, you can swim with manta rays, and it’s just got breathtaking views. It’s also famous for it’s iconic Instagram spots, so if you like a good picture, then you’re going to love Penida.

Words of warning, most of the sights require a lot of walking to get to them, so wear the right shoes.

6. Nusa Lembongan

Nusa Lembongan is another island that’s “technically” Bali, but it’s quite different and actually when you visit Bali, you’ll discover there aren’t many clear beaches with pure blue water perfect for snorkelling….well, just take a quick boat ride to Nusa Lembongan and you’ve got great snorkelling opportunities &  many more wonderful beaches to discover .

You can stay on Nusa Lembongan, or you can just visit for the day. We visited on a day trip and explored the island on a tour, but the best part of that tour was definitely the snorkelling. We’ve had better snorkelling in the Philippines , but as far as snorkelling in Bali goes, this was a great spot and it was super cheap. 

Definitely one of the best places to visit in Indonesia if you’re looking to swim with the fishes!

• Good snorkelling
• Cheap water sports/activities 
• Nice beach and waters 
• Cheap as chips

7. The Gili Islands 

Ah, the Gili Islands! The Gili islands are made up of 3 islands: Gili Trawangan (referred to as Gili T), Gili Meno and Gili Air. Gili T is the largest and air is the smallest. 

You can stay on all 3 islands and they each offer something different. Gili T is a “party” island with endless opportunities for drinking (ironic on a muslin religion island!), parties, and catching the sun. We had a moped accident on Nusa Penida which saw me out of action and meant we had to give up some of the other places in Indonesia we were going to visit…

This meant I spent about 10 days on Gili T, and I have to say, there are worse places to be “stranded”. The sun was amazing, the vibe fantastic, but honestly, the great thing about the Gili islands is their famous snorkelling opportunities. There are statues under the water, there’s a motorbike...you’ve probably seen the pictures.

That was the most disappointing thing for me, I couldn’t go in the water!!! So I spent all that time on this wonderful island, but couldn’t experience the highlights. But Bradley did and he loved it. 

So if you’re looking for pure paradise, then a trip to the Gili islands would be on your Indonesia itinerary. 

You can easily get there from both Bali and Lombok via boat.

So there were a few places we were meant to visit in Indonesia but couldn't due to the moped accident. However, I did a lot of research into these places and I think they're worth visiting. We hope to return in the future to do these:

When is the best time to visit indonesia .

So in general, the most popular times to visit Indonesia are during the dry season which runs from May and September. Bradley and I visited in July/ August/Sep and the weather was perfect. I can’t remember seeing rain once! 

Just remember peak time for Bali and Gili islands is June/July/August so if you want to avoid the crowds then I suggest you go before or after these months.

You can also visit in the monsoon season, because it doesn’t exactly rain every single day, it just means there is a higher risk and of course Indonesia is prone to “natural weather disasters” so just be wary! 

Is it expensive to visit Indonesia? 

No, no and no. Indonesia is one of the cheapest places to visit in the world. Getting there is the expensive part. But if you look on Skyscanner , you’ll probably find a good deal! 

Lombok and Java islands are probably the cheapest of the ones I visited with Bali being a little pricer if you opt for more of the western style conveniences, but if you stay local it’s still cheap as chips. 

How long should I spend in Indonesia? 

This will all depend on what islands you want to visit. I’ve only listed 8 out of thousands of islands in Indonesia. But if you want to visit everything I’ve mentioned on this list then I suggest 6 weeks. You could see everything comfortably. 

But if you’re short on time, then stick to one island, so either choose…

• All of Java (Malang, Bandung, Jogjakarta) 
• Lombok and Gili islands
• Bali , Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan

And stick to just that, then spend at least 2 weeks exploring! 

So there you have it, my guide to the best places to visit in Indonesia. Just remember, there is more to Indonesia than Bali, and there’s even more that we haven’t seen. We were hoping to visit the Komodo Islands and Flores but due to a moped accident our trip was cut short. BUT, I’m pretty sure I’ll visit eventually then they’ll probably make this list of places to visit in Indonesia too!

President Biden and former President Donald Trump will face off in the first presidential debate of the 2024 general election tonight in Atlanta .

It begins a new phase of the presidential race, less than five months out from Nov. 5, Election Day, as the matchup remains extremely tight. Biden and Trump stand virtually tied, according to the latest NPR/PBS News/Marist poll , which echoes a months-long trend of recent national surveys.

The debate also breaks with campaign tradition, occurring months earlier than usual and with a new set of rules both candidates have agreed to, including no live audience. It’s also the first debate either candidate has participated in this campaign season. Biden largely ran unopposed, and Trump notably skipped the GOP primary debates.

How Biden is getting ready for his high-stakes debate with Trump

Here’s what you need to know about this first debate.

When and how to watch

The event starts at 9 p.m. ET and will run for 90 minutes. It will be moderated by CNN’s Jake Tapper and Dana Bash and take place at the network’s studios in Atlanta.

The debate will be available on CNN and the streaming platform Max, formerly known as HBO. Viewers without a cable login can watch on CNN’s website .

NPR will be providing live on-air special coverage of the CNN Presidential Debate Simulcast. Plus, you can follow NPR’s live blog for updates and analysis during the debate.

Who will be there?

Biden and Trump are the only presidential candidates who qualified for the debate stage.

Independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. failed to meet the threshold , which required candidates to poll at 15% or higher in four national surveys and appear on enough state ballots that could theoretically push them past the needed 270 Electoral College votes to secure the presidency.

How is this debate different from those in the past?

Typically, presidential debates occur in front of a live audience, often in an event space on a college or university campus, and are coordinated by the bipartisan Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD).

As Trump takes to the debate stage Thursday, his signature style may be muted

But not this year. Both candidates have said they will not participate in the CPD’s previously scheduled and announced debates, lobbying for earlier matchups .

Instead, Biden and Trump will take part in tonight’s debate on CNN and then a second in September hosted by ABC News.

Biden and Trump have agreed to the following rules :

• Microphones will be muted unless a candidate is directed to speak.
• Candidates are not allowed to bring prewritten notes or props. They will receive a pen and paper, as well as a bottle of water.
• A coin toss determined podium positions and the order of closing statements. According to CNN, Biden’s campaign won the coin toss and chose the podium to the viewers' right. As a result, the Trump team chose to deliver the final closing statement of the evening.

What to watch for

Candidates will likely speak to recent respective legal dramas. The debate comes about a month after Trump was found guilty of 34 criminal charges in New York, becoming the first U.S. president in history to be convicted of felony crimes. Biden’s son, Hunter, who is not running for office, was convicted on felony gun charges in Delaware in mid-June and faces a second federal trial in September over failing to pay his taxes.

Biden will also likely address concerns over his age and ability to serve a second term. At 81, he is the oldest sitting president in U.S. history, and if elected for a second term, he would exit office at 86.

While the president has had public slipups throughout his first term, Trump, who is 78, has repeatedly criticized Biden’s mental ability , most recently speculating he should take a cognitive test. In that same speech, Trump incorrectly named the doctor who conducted his own cognitive exam while president.

On the issues, it’s expected the candidates will discuss the state of the economy and immigration policy, as both are consistently top issues for voters in national polling. It’s also possible the candidates will weigh in on international politics, given voters remain divided on whether the U.S. should be sending military aid to Ukraine and Israel in their respective wars.

The debate may also be an opportunity for Biden to address his decreasing support, when compared to 2020, among key parts of his base, notably Blacks and Latinos and young voters .

Trump is losing some ground among older voters, and the Biden campaign is trying to capitalize on that . Plus, the former president may still need to repair relations with Nikki Haley supporters who remain uncertain about backing him again.

What's next?

Trump will likely announce his pick for vice president in the coming weeks. There will also be a vice presidential debate this summer. The date has not been finalized, but Vice President Harris agreed to one held on either July 23 or Aug. 13.

On the legal front, Trump will appear for sentencing in his criminal trial on July 11, just days before the Republican National Convention, which begins on July 15 in Milwaukee. A month later, the Democratic National Convention will kick off on Aug. 19 in Chicago.

Trump and Biden will debate for a second time on Sept. 10.

The moment has been four years in the making: President Biden and former President Donald J. Trump on a debate stage, another flashpoint in their long-running hostilities.

The debate, hosted by CNN at its Atlanta studios starting at 9 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday, will occur without an in-person audience and before Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden formally accept their parties’ nominations this summer, in a dramatic departure from the past.

Where can I watch it?

The New York Times will stream the debate alongside real-time commentary and analysis from reporters.

CNN will broadcast or stream the debate on all its platforms, including its flagship cable channel, as well as CNN International, CNN en Español and CNN Max. The network also plans to stream the debate on CNN.com.

CNN is also sharing its feed with other broadcast and cable news networks so that they could simulcast the debate. That means you can also watch it on Fox News, ABC News, NBC News and probably elsewhere.

Will Robert F. Kennedy Jr. be onstage?

No. He failed to meet CNN’s requirements, which means Ross Perot remains the last independent candidate to have qualified for a general election presidential debate — and that was in 1992. For this debate, participants had to receive at least 15 percent support in four approved national polls and qualify for the ballot in enough states to have the chance to earn the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency.

Who is moderating the debate?

The moderators will be Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, who are fixtures on the anchor desk at CNN and the hosts of the network’s Sunday political talk show, “ State of the Union .” Mr. Tapper is CNN’s chief Washington correspondent, and Ms. Bash is the network’s chief political correspondent.
