Embark on an Unforgettable Journey: Discovering Western Australia's Hidden Treasures

Escape the bustling city of Perth and embark on an extraordinary adventure through the breathtaking Darling Mountain Ranges, where nature's grandeur meets the charm of historical rural townships. Our tour is a window to the vastness of Aussie farmlands and a date with geological wonder.

Your adventure begins with a complimentary pickup from your city accommodation in Perth. As we journey eastward, you'll be transported through time and landscapes. Traverse through the historical gems of Guildford, Midland, and the picturesque regions of Mundaring and Sawyers Valley. The awe-inspiring Darling Mountain Ranges accompany you on this scenic drive to the idyllic town of York.

Arriving in York, you'll step into a town characterized by dainty cottages and ever-changing rose gardens. Stroll along the majestic Avon River and cross the iconic swinging bridge, all while immersing yourself in the town's rich history.

Leaving York behind, our journey takes us past vast farms and the colossal machinery that drives the wheat belt area, making our country famous. Our next stop is Corrigin, home to a unique Dog Cemetery, a touching dedication to man's best friend. Discover how these loyal companions play a pivotal role in the lives of farmers in rural Australia.

Hyden welcomes us with the iconic Wave Rock, a monumental granite formation resembling an ocean wave right in the heart of the desert. This geological marvel bears etchings believed to be a staggering 2.63 billion years old. According to geologists, this very rock was once submerged beneath the ocean, and the marks left by receding waters still adorn it. It's hard to believe that the closest ocean waters are now nearly 250 kilometers away.

Enjoy a light, freshly cooked lunch at your leisure in Hyden, followed by an Eco-Walk up the Wave Rock. As you soak in the natural landscape, you'll be struck by the mesmerizing beauty of the surrounding countryside.

Our adventure continues as we explore Hippo's Yawn Cave, a colossal rock formation that resembles a yawning African hippopotamus, standing over 12 meters tall. This rock served as a traditional shelter for the local people in the past.

As we make our way back to Perth, you'll drive through picturesque fruit orchards, indulging in the beauty of the local landscape. In season, from August to October, the area boasts seasonal wildflowers, painting the surroundings with vibrant colors.

Our journey concludes either at your accommodation in Perth, ensuring a seamless return to your lodgings, or you can choose to be dropped off at another location within the vibrant heart of Perth's CBD.

This tour promises an unforgettable blend of history, nature, and exploration that will leave you with lasting memories of Western Australia's hidden treasures.

We took two different full-day tours of this company - to the Wave Rock and to the Margaret River. We really liked it. Good organization and communication with the guide. A few words about our amazing guide and driver. Kea is nice, knowledgeable, caring person. He took care of us during all the way. He told interesting stories from the life of both modern Western Australia and historical facts. He was happy to answer all our questions. He made our trips unforgettable. Thank you, Kea. We really appreciate your help and engagement. Nataliya S - via TripAdvisor Mar. 2023
My brother and I did this tour on 6th March 2020. It was worth the very long drive as on the way there, it was broken up by visiting Historic York, the Dog Cemetery and the failed rabbit fencing, all really interesting. Lunch was average at best. Think I would have preferred to pay less and take my own being honest. We also saw Hippo Rock which I loved before getting to the wave. Our guide was helpful but there was only 4 of us. The other couple were not really talkative so it made for awkward silences. Anyway, it was worth the 8 hours spent travelling. Willsey M - via TripAdvisor Mar. 2020
We stayed in a suburb campsite near Perth and they picked us up from there (and back) for the 12 hours wave-rock-tour. Newer minibus, excellent driver, not one uncomfortable situation during the hole day. Long ride - recommendable. Sandy - via TripAdvisor Jan. 2020

Embark on a Scenic Journey: From Hotel Pickup to Historic York

Your adventure begins with a comfortable 90-minute air-conditioned coach ride to the charming town of York. Nestled along the banks of the Avon River, York is a picturesque gem in the rolling farmlands of the beautiful Avon Valley.

This district offers a unique glimpse into Western Australia's vibrant history, both pre-and post-European settlement in 1831. As the first inland town in Western Australia, York boasts a wealth of historic, heritage-listed Victorian and Federation buildings.

Interestingly, the region earned its name during an expedition in October 1830 when JS Clarkson drew a parallel to his own English county, York County, due to the striking resemblance of the landscape.

A Journey to Corrigin: Unveiling a Wheatbelt Gem

From York, our adventure continues with a scenic 90-minute journey to the captivating town of Corrigin. Located in the central Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, Corrigin sits 229 kilometers (142 miles) east-southeast of Perth, accessible via State Route 40.

This thriving community is deeply rooted in farming, focusing on crops and sheep. Corrigin holds a remarkable world record for 'the most dogs in a ute,' a testament to its unique charm.

The town's name, of Noongar indigenous origin, was first documented in 1877 in relation to a well in the vicinity, although the meaning behind the name remains shrouded in mystery.

Before 1908, Corrigin's only link to the rest of the state was a railway track leading to Merredin, making it a remote and challenging place for settlers. Much of the land was once held by George Walton on a pastoral lease, managed from his homestead at Wogerlin Rock. The area began to take shape when Mr. A. W. Goyder, the son of South Australia's Surveyor-General, acquired the land upon which the town now stands.

Journey to the Spectacular Wave Rock: A Natural Wonder Awaits

Following a delightful lunch (at your own expense), you'll continue your journey for approximately an hour, reaching the incredible Wave Rock. This extraordinary natural rock formation resembles a towering breaking ocean wave, standing at an impressive 15 meters (49 feet) in height and stretching over 110 meters (360 feet) in length.

Wave Rock forms the northern side of a solitary hill known as "Hyden Rock." This prominent hill, a granite inselberg, is situated approximately 3 kilometers (2 miles) to the east of the charming town of Hyden and a scenic 296 kilometers (184 miles) east-southeast of Perth, Western Australia.

Both Wave Rock and Hyden Rock are part of a 160-hectare (395-acre) nature reserve known as Hyden Wildlife Park, where the marvels of nature unfold. This incredible site attracts over 100,000 visitors every year, offering an awe-inspiring encounter with Western Australia's natural beauty.

Explore the Quirky Wonder of Hippo's Yawn:

Embark on a brief, 5-minute journey to the captivating Hippo's Yawn, an often-overlooked rock formation nestled near Wave Rock in Hyden. This remarkable rock is aptly named for its uncanny resemblance to a yawning hippo, making it a perfect spot for a fun photo opportunity.

As you explore the area, make sure to venture through the "throat" of Hippo's Yawn, capturing this intriguing moment with your camera.

While in the vicinity, take time to savor a delightful coffee at the local café, pay a visit to the wildlife park, explore the replica Pioneer Town, or select a memorable souvenir from the Wildflower Shop. This shop not only offers great food but also pays tribute to the profusion of exotic and rare wildflowers that grace the area during the spring season.

For nature enthusiasts, be sure to seek out the array of unique granite rock plants, ancient Sheoaks, Lichen Carpets, Creeping Mosses, and Sticky Drosera insect-eater plants that thrive in this special region. It's a fascinating exploration of the local flora that adds to the charm of your journey.

Wave Rock Tours

Imagine a giant surf wave of 14 metres high and 110 metres long about to crash in the outback … what a unique natural attraction! Aptly named Wave Rock, the ‘wave’ is located in the country town of Hyden and is composed of multi-coloured granite shaped over time by the gradual erosion of the softer rock below the upper edge. It is believed to be over 2,700 million years old.

Great Southern Outback Tours & Accommodation

The wonderful stories of the Great Southern region are the foundations of Western Australia’s colonial heritage and our inspiration for Great Southern Outback Tours & Accommodation.

We are a privately owned, bespoke outback touring company, located in the beautiful Kalgan River valley, near the port city of Albany.  We offer small group, off-the-beaten-track 4WD adventures, discovering the glorious rural landscapes of WA’s south east, from the rugged coastal cliffs of the Southern Ocean to the pioneering Goldfields and all points in-between. We like to think that we do things a little differently.  It’s extraordinary country out there in WA’s outback with wide open spaces and clear nights offering an outstanding view of the stars. We’ve created tours that combine a little of everything from meeting local farmers to seeing its amazing wildlife and contemplating both colonial and Aboriginal history and culture.

None of the well-trod tourist trail for us!  Our tours go off-road and into the heart of rural communities as that’s where the REAL stories are found.

Katter Kitch Gallery and Tours

Katter Kich Gallery & Tours has been created to showcase the history, art and storytelling of the first nations people of Hyden. The gallery has an amazing selection of art to buy and also houses some of our private collection and a studio for artists to create work to sell in the showroom.

Join Michael Ward who has lived in Hyden all his life on a guided walking tour of Katter Kich (wave rock), Hippos Yawn and the Breakers. Learn about the Cultural significance of the area and the dreamtime stories

Essential Items to Pack for Your Wave Rock Road Trip

The weather in Australia’s outback can vary depending on the season. If you’re planning to visit Wave Rock during summer (November – February), you should prepare for lots of sun and 30+ degree temperatures. Don’t forget to pack the following road trip essentials!

  • Sun glasses
  • Insect repellent
  • Stainless steel water bottle
  • Sturdy hiking shoes

Perth to Wave Rock Road Trip – Day One

Aim to leave Perth in the morning and begin the 4 hour drive east toward Hyden . Along the way you will want to stop to stretch your legs and grab a coffee and some food. After 2.5 hrs of driving, you’ll reach the small wheatbelt town of Corrigin.

This makes a good place to break up the drive and grab some lunch at one of the local restaurants or cafes. From there, it’s smooth sailing to Hyden with just over 1 hr of driving to go.

Wave Rock, Hyden Western Australia

A quiet, crowd-free morning at Wave Rock

Wave Rock – There’s no better way to kick off your weekend in Hyden than heading straight over to Wave Rock. This natural formation is truly mind blowing, there are few places in the world where you can find a giant wave in the middle of the desert!

The history of this impressive rock formation goes back nearly 3 million years. Take a walk around the base of the rock to learn about how the wave was formed by reading the various signposts. Make your way to the top of the wave for an equally awesome view over the surrounding countryside.

Exploring Wave Rock at sunset

Exploring Wave Rock at golden hour

Don’t forget to capture that quintessential standing under/riding the wave shot before you go! If you visit Wave Rock during spring, you’ll be able to see many beautiful and rare wildflowers growing around the base of the rock. From September to December wildflowers bring this area to life painting the fields in bright colours.

For a really special experience, I would recommend heading over to Wave Rock to watch the sunset. If you’re lucky, you will catch the sky light up in brilliant colours above the rock while the many birds that call this area home fill the air with their song. Stay for a while longer and watch the stars come out for an extra magical time.

Tickets – $12/vehicle

Hippo's Yawn, Hyden WA

Enter the Hippo’s mouth for a fun photo

Hippo’s Yawn – Next to Wave Rock, you’ll find the start of an easy 1km loop path that takes you to the Hippo’s Yawn. This remarkable granite rock formation strangely resembles a very large hippo opening its mouth. It’s definitely worth making the effort to see, especially since you’ll be able to capture a unique photo standing inside the mouth!

If you’d prefer to drive there instead of walking, vehicle access is also provided and there is a carpark available too.

Perth to Wave Rock Road Trip

Follow the path near Wave Rock to reach the Hippo’s Yawn

Mulka’s Cave – For many hundreds of years, Indigenous Australians have called Wave Rock and the surrounding area home. Evidence of this can be found within Mulka’s Cave, just a 15 minute drive from Wave Rock.

Step into the cave to see the ancient rock art that covers the inside walls depicting Aboriginal stories and legends. The cave itself is actually named after a local legend. It is said that a giant named Mulka inhabited the cave and left imprints of his large hands which can still be seen today.

The Humps – Not far from Mulka’s Cave, the Humps are yet another unique rock formation to see. For those who would like to explore more of the bushland, there are several walking trails to choose from.

Gnamma Trail: This easy and flat 1.2km loop trail takes less than an hour to complete. Along the trail, informative signs tell you about the history of the landscape featuring illustrations of the Noongar elders.

Kalari Trail: A well marked 1.8km path brings you to the top of the Humps for an awesome view of the surrounding landscape. This trail is classed as Grade 3 difficulty as it’s pretty steep in some areas.

Perth to Wave Rock Road Trip – Day Two

Before beginning day two of the road trip, start your day with some breakfast and a coffee at the Bush Bakehouse Cafe in Hyden. This cafe has great reviews and we really enjoyed the food there on our most recent visit to Hyden.

Spend the rest of the morning seeing the highlights of Hyden listed below before making the 4 hr drive back to Perth.

Tickets for the museums and wildlife park can be purchased at the Wave Rock Kiosk. You can buy tickets for each individual museum or purchase the Gold Pass for $20 which covers the Wildlife Park, Lace Place, Miniature Soldier Museum and Pioneer Town.

Lake Magic, Perth to Wave Rock Road Trip

Lake Magic – This fascinating lake really lives up to its name. The presence of salt and minerals causes the lake to change colours. At certain times of day it might appear yellow, green or even white. Lake Magic is a stunning place to watch the sunrise or sunset and offers some fantastic photo opportunities.

Salt Bath – If you’ve ever wanted to experience the sensation of floating effortlessly in salt water, you’re in luck. You’ll find this unique man-made salt pool only 800m from Wave Rock, right next to Lake Magic. With similarities to the Dead Sea, the gypsum minerals present in the water are said to provide therapeutic benefits.

Wave Rock Wildlife Park – I bet you didn’t expect to find a large wildlife park within walking distance from Wave Rock! Head inside to find all of the iconic Aussie animals such as kangaroos, koalas, cockatoos, emus, camels, wombats and many more. Grab some lunch at Wave Rock Café before or after your visit to the park.

Tickets: $15/adult, $7.50/child

Pioneer town- Hyden Western Australia

General store, Pioneer Town

Pioneer Town – Take a step back in time to discover the pioneer history of the wheatbelt region. The museum’s displays feature antique collections and memorabilia dating as far back as the year 1870. Have a look through the historic photo albums to see some of Hyden’s very first residents.

Tickets: $5

Miniature Soldier Museum – Check out this collection of over 10,000 toy soldiers arranged to show a series of the world’s many wars. You’ll see the Napoleonic War, Russian War, both World Wars and even the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.

Lace Place – Admire the largest collection of lace in the southern hemisphere! This beautiful display of antique wedding dresses and lace gowns dates as far back as the 1600’s.

Hyden Street Scape Art – On the way out of town you’ll drive past a row of sculptures made from scrap metal and old farming machinery. These fascinating works of art tell stories of Hyden’s past from the pioneer days of the early 1900’s to the present day.
