National Rail Guide

In Great Britain each Train Operating Company provides its own booking service for journeys by its trains, but many of their websites also sell tickets for nationwide journeys, regardless of which company operates the trains on the routes you wish to travel by.

The National Rail website is plugged into all of the train operator's booking services, so when more than one of these companies offers tickets for a route, it in effect offers a price comparison service. It isn't a ticket agent, so you will be connected to the website of your choice in order to make a booking.

Travel Information

Final Destination Edinburgh

These trains commence their journeys in the station at Manchester Airport and after departure from Piccadilly station they also call at Manchester Oxford Road station

If you can book ahead of travel, so will have reserved seats, and Oxford Road has convenient access from the starting point of your journey, boarding the train there can be a a good option. At Manchester Piccadilly the access to these trains is more convoluted, as they depart from the platform/track which is furthest from the entrance to the station.

These trains also call at: Carlisle Connect in Carlisle for Dumfries, Hexham and Kilmarnock

These trains also call at: Haymarket a few minutes before they arrive at Edinburgh Waverley, so if your final destination is at the western side of Edinburgh city centre, you may have an easier and quicker journey if you leave the train at that station. Connect at Haymarket for Dunfermline Kirkcaldy, Lecuchars, Dundee, Aberdeen, Perth, Aviemore and Inverness.

Journey Features

Good to know.

In the hours when no direct trains are available, take a train from Manchester heading to Glasgow and connect in Carlisle.

Journey description:

North of Lancaster the railway passes through a glorious landscape, pretty much until it reaches the outskirts of Edinburgh.

Around five minutes north of Lancaster, the West Coast Main Line, briefly lives up to its name with a fleeting glimpse of Morecambe Bay, the only sea view on the journey.

Between Lancaster and Carlisle the railway takes a route between The Lake District to the west and the Pennines to the east;so there are great views to be enjoyed from both sides of the train towards distant mountains.

Approximately 10 minutes north of Oxenholme comes one of the highlights of the journey when the railway travels through the Lune Gorge - though here the best views are from the right (when facing the direction of travel).

A beautiful landmark to look out for on the right, just before the train enters the gorge, is the spectacular sight of Low Gill Viaduct, on a now abandoned railway.

Then as the train travels on towards Penrith, the best of the views are over to the left when heading north, on a clear day the hills of The Lake District can be seen in the distance.

The final highlight of the English section of the journey are the views to the south of Penrith.

North of Carlisle once the train has crossed the border into Scotland, it will travel through the beautiful Southern Uplands .

After the train has passed through Lockerbie station, the views as the railway climbs and then descends over Beattock summit, are particularly special.

The highlight of the Scottish section of the journey comes a little later when the railway winds a path through the hills south of Carstairs station.

Travelling between Lancaster and Oxenholme

Book Early and Save: Yes

Online Bookings Usually Open: from up to 24 weeks ahead of the travel date (usually); TransPennnine Express (TPE) places its ticket on sale sooner than other UK train operating companies.

Saving money:

If you want to travel at the cheapest possible price, look for the 'Advance tickets', though the four key things worth knowing about booking and using 'Advance' tickets for travel by TPE services are: (1) The ticket(s) will be valid for the specific departure you select when making a booking. (2) The ticket(s) cannot either be refunded, if you subsequently change your plans or miss the train due to any circumstances not attributable to the train operator. (3) They can be exchanged to another departure on this route prior to the departure you have booked - but the price difference with the new ticket will need to be paid (the price will likely have risen since your original booking will need to be paid. (4) TPE doesn't take Advance tickets off sale until 15 mins prior to departure.

The potential to save by splitting tickets on Trainline

It can be worth looking up this journey on Trainline .

It can be possible to save money by using split ticketing, with the booking process being no more complicated than booking conventional tickets - find out more .

Reservations:

All types of ticket booked at least 15 minutes ahead of travel for TPE trains have complimentary seat reservation.

If you book and Advance ticket(s) you have to travel on the train shown on the reservation, which will be the specific departure you selected when making a booking. Though on boarding, you won't have to occupy the seat(s) you have been assigned for your ticket to be valid.

If you book Anytime or Off-Peak tickets you will be provided with a reservation(s) on the departure you selected when making a booking, but are able to transfer the reservation to any other valid departure on your travel date. You can do this by contacting the TPE social media team, or at a station ticket desk.

What is unusual about travelling with TPE is that these reservations can be arranged up to around 15 minutes prior to departure - which is a much shorter time limit than the norm.

Travelling on Saturday-Sunday

Tickets are usually available 12 weeks ahead of the travel date, but maintenance work on the route is periodically undertaken at weekends and if it is scheduled on your travel date, it can affect when tickets will be released for sale.

If you're looking up a journey less than 12 weeks ahead and Advance tickets aren't available, it can be a good indication that works will be impacting on your travel date. It can be worth checking this on the National Rail website - enter TransPennine Express as the operator.

Booking at the station

As TPE doesn't take Advance tickets off sale until 15 mins prior to departure, if you will be booking walk-up tickets at the station try to avoid booking at the last minute.

Offers and deals:

TPE offers a group deal for when groups of 3 - 9 adults are travelling together and Advance tickets are booked online - make sure you see the 'G' symbol which indicates that the discount has been applied. You can save 33% of the total costs of the tickets and no Railcard is required.

A hotel bathroom in Adelaide with a soaking tub which has been filled with bubbles

South Australia's capital has a new spring in its step — here's where to stay in Adelaide

A clutch of new design-led hotels pays tribute to the South Australian capital’s landmarks.

The capital of South Australia, Adelaide has traditionally been seen by international visitors as a gateway destination — a jumping-off point for discovering the natural wonders on its doorstep. Among them, the Adelaide Hills are a bucolic wine region, while Kangaroo Island, just off the mainland, is home to sea lions, koalas and native bird species.

But in recent years, the city has discovered a fresh sense of energy and drive that’s shaking off its reputation as a sedate country capital. As well as expanding its laneway scene of bars and restaurants, it’s welcomed a raft of cool, design-friendly digs — all of which are helping to narrow the gap between the big-hitting cities of Sydney and Melbourne.

1. Vibe Hotel Adelaide

Vibe is the fourth address by the homegrown hotel group known for its affordable yet stylish properties. Opened in 2023 the East End of the CBD (Central Business District), it occupies an 18-storey glass-fronted structure by the Adelaide Parklands, a green belt encircling the inner city.

This urban-meets-nature setting is reflected in the 123 guest rooms, which blend wall-to-wall windows and raw concrete ceilings with wooden bathroom screens and luxurious details like high-thread-cotton bedding. The ones on upper floors also come with views across the treetops and winery-rich Adelaide Hills beyond.

It’s a landscape that’s easily explored by taking advantage of the city’s free bike-hire scheme. Even closer to hand are locations featured in the city’s roster of festivals, such as the Adelaide Fringe and WOMADelaide. And after a day exploring, you can sit at Storehouse, the lobby-level diner that flows into an outdoor courtyard filled with native Australian plants. Dinner dishes could include seared kangaroo loin with black garlic, pickled grapes, pumpkin seeds and saltbush, or linguine with king prawns from nearby Spencer Gulf — all paired with local wine. From A$239 (£124).

2. Hotel Indigo Adelaide Markets

The Adelaide Fringe comes to the city from mid-February, and the Indigo celebrates it with posters and memorabilia. The vibrant design goes hand in hand with the hotel’s setting next to Adelaide Central Market — the biggest covered market in the Southern Hemisphere, packed with colourful produce. Indigo’s modern Australian restaurant, Market & Meander, also keeps things local — although the biggest draw is the rooftop bar, the city’s highest. From A$202 (£105).

3. Eos by SkyCity

This luxurious hotel has a spa and a terrace overlooking the River Torrens and an extensive urban park. It’s part of the SkyCity Adelaide casino complex, which is in turn set inside the heritage-listed Adelaide Railway Station building. A highlight of the culinary options, The Guardsman restaurant occupies the station’s former Great Dining Hall and retains original flooring and lights. From A$339 (£176).

4. Oval Hotel

This aptly named hotel connects directly to the Adelaide Oval sporting stadium. It’s a few steps from the arena’s visitor centre and RoofClimb experience for behind-the-scenes tours, while its Bespoke Wine Bar & Kitchen looks right onto the Oval’s hallowed pitch. Away from the field, the guest rooms offer great skyline views. From A$299 (£155).

EasyJet launches dozens of new routes from UK airports including to the Canary Islands

EasyJet is launching a new flight route from a UK airport to the Canary Islands, alongside 32 other new routes from 11 different UK airports — here's a run down of all the new UK routes

An Easyjet Airbus A319-111 aircraft lands at El Prat airport in Barcelona

  • 16:47, 11 Jun 2024

EasyJet is launching a new flight route to the Canary Islands from a UK airport, as well as introducing new package holidays and dozens of other routes.

The new route from London Southend to Tenerife comes after the airline announced that it will open a new three aircraft base at the UK airport next year. Package holidays from Southend to Tenerife are also now available departing seven days a week from May 2025 — with flights on sale in the coming months.

Tenerife is one of the largest of the Canary Islands and boasts a wealth of family-orientated hotels alongside an array of exclusive adults-only hotels. Flights to Tenerife from London Southend will now be available to book in the coming months.

The new route adds to easyJets' summer 2025 programme, with holidays to destinations such as Alicante, Majorca, and Malaga already part of the offering for next summer.

Paul Bixby, easyJet holidays’ chief commercial officer, said: “With Tenerife being such a popular holiday destination amongst easyJet holidays customers, we’re delighted to be offering package holidays to the largest of the Canary Islands to holidaymakers in the London Southend area for Summer 2025.

“Known for its incredible family-friendly hotel offering, alongside its wealth of luxury hotels for couples to escape to, there’s something for all in Tenerife with easyJet holidays.”

Marc Taylor, acting CEO for London Southend Airport, added: “Tenerife has been in very high demand across our 8.2 million catchment, so we’re particularly thrilled with today’s news and the continued positive momentum for our airport. With six trains every hour from central London to Southend Airport Station (less than 60 minutes from Liverpool Street and only 43 minutes from Stratford), we’re helping people in the city - and throughout Essex - get access to convenient, budget-friendly holidays to more than fifteen sought-after locations in Europe.”

Overall EasyJet is introducing 60 new routes, including 33 from 11 UK airports.

Birmingham Airport

Birmingham Airport will gain five new routes to serve demand from customers in the Midlands. Year-round routes from Birmingham to Prague (Czech republic) and Marrakech (Morocco) will start on November 13 and December 1, respectively. Flights from Birmingham to Krakow (Poland) start on November 15, to Reykjavik (Iceland) from December 3 and to Innsbruck (Austria) starting from December 15.

Bristol Airport

Bristol Airport will gain a new route to Agadir (Morocco) launching October 27 and another route to Istanbul (Turkey) will launch on November 4.

Liverpool John Lennon Airport

From Liverpool, easyJet has announced five new year-round routes — Prague (Czech republic) from October 28, Marrakech (Morocco) from November 13, Malta from December 10, Berlin (Germany) from February 14 and Fuerteventura (Canary Islands) from February 19.

Glasgow Airport

The airlines' Glasgow network will also be expanded, with three new winter sun destinations. New flights from Glasgow to Lanzarote (Spain) will begin October 27, to Fuerteventura (Canary Islands) from October 30 and to Marrakech (Morocco) from November 11. A year round city route to Prague (Czech Republic) will also launch from November 7.

Edinburgh Airport

For more year-round sun from Scotland, customers will also now also be able to fly from Edinburgh to Agadir (Morocco) starting from November 6 2024.

Belfast Airport

Northern Ireland will also benefit from a winter route to Fuerteventura (Canary Islands) starting on October 28 and a new year-round route from Belfast International to Prague (Czech Republic) will launch on November 2. Flights to Marrakech (Morocco) from Belfast International will return on November 3.

Leeds Airport

During January and February 2025, the airline will fly routes from Leeds to Geneva (Switzerland) starting on January 18 and from Newcastle to Lyon (France) starting on January 4. Also from Newcastle, a new year round route to Paris (France) from October 27, will operate six days a week.

London Gatwick

There will also be a new winter service to Tromso in Norway for the very first time with departures from London Gatwick, as well as a year-round service to Strasbourg - a brand new French destination for the airline.

London Luton

The airline has also launched three routes from London Luton to Athens (Greece) and Basel (Switzerland) which both start on November and Djerba ( Tunisia ) which will start on November 11.

Manchester Airport

An additional route to Djerba (Tunisia) will also launch from Manchester on November 11, as well as a year round route from Manchester to Zurich (Switzerland) from November 4. Manchester will also gain a second route to Akureyri (Northern Iceland) starting November 12. EasyJet is currently the only airline that offers direct routes from the UK to Northern Iceland.

Interactive Glastonbury map reveals size of festival compared to your home town

It seems every Glastonbury regular is obsessed with the size of the Worthy Farm festival, returning on June 26.

‘It’s like, huge, you will walk, like, so far,’ they say wide-eyed, while offering important but obvious footwear advice ( word on the street is that walking boots are advisable ).

But let’s get the facts straight. Just how big actually is Glastonbury Festival? If only we could plonk the surface area of Glastonbury on our home town to grasp its size…

Luckily, there’s a website for that , in which you can overlay Glastonbury Festival onto anywhere in the world, giving you an exact size comparison.

Hopefully this could clear up any big festival scaries for Glastonbury first-timers, and you will realise that actually – although it’s 900 acres big, 3,000 acts strong and attended by 200,000 people – you will soon be able to get your bearings.

Or, perhaps not…

From Waterloo to Tottenham Court Road, Glastonbury does cover a mighty chunk of central London but is admittedly a little dot when you take in the size of the capital.

Londoners are used to Hyde Park Festival, which pales in comparison to Glastonbury in terms of act count and size – but the Worthy Farm grounds are only a little bit bigger than that particular London park (if you include Kensington Gardens, too, and tip it on its side!).

Perhaps a better park comparison is Regents’ Park, which Glastonbury neatly covers, while also taking in half of Primrose Hill and a few neighbouring streets.

Of course, Glastonbury’s grounds are no match for the mighty Richmond Park – which as we know, is absolutely massive.

Oxford’s whole city centre would fit into the Glastonbury Festival map.

The site begins from University Parks in the north and reaches all the way down to Christ Church Meadows in the south.

From west to east, the overlap spans from Oxford Station all the way past Holywell and into the greenery surrounding Magdalen College.

Glaswegians could walk from the River Clyde – or Glasgow Central Station – north until they hit the M8 in the same time it takes festival-goers to plod from the bottom of Glastonbury to the top.

For greenery lovers, the Glastonbury sits just fits into Pollok Country Park and the surrounding golf course, North Wood, deer park and various playing fields.

Maybe a morning run is in order around Worthy Farm…

Glastonbury Festival is roughly the size of Edinburgh’s Holyrood Park, and in the city spans from Broughton down to Southside, encompassing the Old Town, Canongate and Dumbiedykes.

That’s a lot of plodding, but just think of it like a walk around the best park in Edinburgh – but with 200,000 people and 3,000 distractions.

If you’re an avid Arthur’s Seat hiker then Glastonbury should actually be a walk in the park – or should we say, farm.

Toon dwellers can enjoy Glastonbury safe in the knowledge the schlep back to their tent can be no longer than the walk from Newcastle Central Station to Jesmond station.

East to west, the New Bridge Street roundabout to Arthur’s Hill is the maximum distance required for weary festival goers.

However add in the crowds of Bigg Market on a Saturday night – but everywhere – and it may take you a little longer than anticipated.

Bristolians will probably be aware of how big Glastonbury Festival is, with Worthy Farm on its doorstep.

But if you’re not, then rest assured there aren’t any hills to match the gradient of Clifton Vale at Glastonbury. Phew!

However, the festival’s site would encompass the city centre and beyond, spanning all the way from Kingsdown in the north to Victoria Park in the south.

Glastonbury roughly fits just over the width of the River Mersey at its narrowest point in Liverpool.

If you can’t quite grasp this and are more of a land creature, the area spans from Stanley Dock all the way down to Lord Street in the city centre.

Across, it is just about the distance from Liverpool Lime Street to get to the water’s edge.

Weirdly, the Glastonbury map overlay almost perfectly fits into the railway route around Manchester’s city centre.

So if you’ve often walked through the Civic Quarter, into the Northern Quarter, China Town, the Medieval Quarter, Spinningfields and Petersfield, then you’ve got a pretty good idea about the size of Worthy Farm’s festival.

In the north of the map is Manchester Victoria station, while Manchester Oxford Road marks the southern tip.
