While visiting Los Angeles in 2022, 26-year-old pop artist Knox was telling a friend that he had recently scored a major-label deal with Atlantic Records. “That’s cool, but you’ll never be Matty Healy,” the friend quipped.

Soon after, Redline Entertainment’s Larry Blackford discovered Knox on Instagram and reached out to the singer for a meeting, along with the company’s Wes Mayers. The three of them instantly hit it off, and Knox signed a co-management deal in 2020. “When he sings, his voice is reverberating. I’ve never heard anything like it,” Blackford says. Adds Mayers, “Knox has one of the best work ethics of any artist I’ve met. He has high energy, high drive and that real competitive streak.”

That drive was quickly put to the test when the pandemic forced Knox to get creative with his promotional strategy while building a fan base on social media. He first experienced some significant traction with his 2022 single “Sneakers” before trying the same strategy of consistently posting teasers for “Not The 1975” — particularly leaning into videos about the cheeky chorus.

Despite the catchy hook, Knox admits that “Not The 1975” was more of a “slow burn” in comparison to “Sneakers,” despite the acclaim he was getting from those around him in the weeks following the former’s release. “Everyone was saying that it’s an amazing song, but the streaming numbers weren’t translating yet,” he says. But after a late 2023 tour, where Knox says the song was “clearly a fan favorite,” it began to take a hold at radio and on digital service providers. “Not The 1975” debuted on Pop Airplay and Adult Pop Airplay in late January, and it reaches new highs of No. 26 and No. 15, respectively, on the March 16-dated charts. Additionally, the hit has 8.5 million total on-demand official U.S. streams through March 7, according to Luminate.

Neither of Knox’s managers are surprised to see the singer-songwriter now experiencing multi-format success. “With lyrics like ‘Vodka soda and baggy jeans/Using none of that art degree,’ how could [radio] not love it?” Blackford asks, with Mayers adding that he often sees a “waterfall effect” for an artist following a tour. “People will be like, ‘I like this guy, let’s check out the rest of his catalog.’ We’re mindful of that.”

Knox will go back on the road for a headlining tour across the West Coast beginning in April, hopeful that other songs from his discography will get similar love. “I’m most confident in my live shows,” he says. “Whenever I make a song, I ask, ‘Would this sound sick live?’”

“There is pressure, of course. At the same time, if I put out music that I love, if it gets a million streams, great; and if it doesn’t, that’s OK,” he says. “I have the coolest job in the world. No matter what happens, I’m going to be fine.”

Nashville-based singer-songwriter Knox has released his latest single, “Here’s To Us,” now available everywhere through Atlantic Records and is gearing up for his first ever headline tour later this month, which is already completely sold out.

“Here’s To Us,” marks Knox’s first music of 2024 and follows his recent EP from last year, titled I’m So Good At Being Alone? . The EP features emotionally charged tracks like “ We’re Not In Love Anymore ” with pop-rock artist Charlotte Sands, “Miss When You Missed Me” featuring Nightly, and the viral favorite “ Not The 1975 ” (now boasting over 10 million streams). The latter track, currently gaining traction on SiriusXM Hits 1 and other top pop outlets, also has a stripped-back acoustic version.

Having celebrated the success of I’m So Good At Being Alone? as a special guest on Nightly’s Wear Your Heart Out Tour , Knox drew massive lines of fans to his merch booth and is now ready to embark on his very first headline tour, consisting of nine sold-out dates starting January 30 at Chicago, IL’s Schubas Tavern and extending into early February. The tour will feature support from Atlantic label mate maryjo and select dates with Spencer Jordan .

Big stars, bigger shows: How Knoxville could be the next hot spot for major concert tours

Country stars Tim McGraw, Dan + Shay and Sam Hunt. Hip-hop and R&B artists Nelly, Ashanti. Grammy album of the year winner Jon Batiste. Breakout musicians Zach Bryan and Tyler Childers. They are are all slated to perform in Knoxville in 2024 .

With an increasing number of legends and popular music acts stopping by, Knoxville’s status in the live entertainment market is growing.

“It’s been awesome (to see)! And I think it just coincides with the growth of a lot of different things in Knoxville,” Visit Knoxville President Kim Bumpas told Knox News. “More and more artists want to come to Knoxville because we're a great regional drivable market … that is still big yet feels a little more intimate.”

In recent years, Paul McCartney and Elton John serenaded Thompson-Boling Arena at Food City Center. And urban artists Lizzo , T-Pain and Lil Wayne also hyped Knoxville crowds. But could we draw the tours of mega stars like Beyoncé and Taylor Swift? Knoxville's stadiums just might be on their radar, even if we wouldn't be one of their first stops, according to a Los Angeles-based concerts producer.

Knoxville was named among the top 50 concert markets nationally, according to Pollstar’s annual concert market rankings in 2023. Landing at No. 41 on the list, Knoxville jumped 56 spots from its 2022 ranking (No. 97), making the single largest jump in the country and bringing in nearly $30 million in the process. Pollstar is a trade publication that tracks live music and concert data.

“Knoxville has set itself apart as an entertainment destination. Artists want to experience what all the hype is about,” Toni Williams, marketing manager for ASM Global Knoxville, told Knox News. “Many artists, they continue to return on their tours because of the great outpouring of support from our community.”

ASM Global is a venue and event company that manages and operates the Knoxville Civic Auditorium and Coliseum, Knoxville Convention Center, World's Fair Exhibition Hall and Chilhowee Park and Exposition Center.

How Knoxville is becoming a hot spot for concerts and live entertainment

Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top and Hootie and the Blowfish with Darius Rucker will take the stage at Food City Center this year. And don’t forget Aerosmith is expected to reschedule a postponed show there.

The venue, which signed a 10-year naming rights deal with Food City Center last year, recently hosted shows by Lizzo, Blake Shelton, Kane Brown, Luke Bryan and Keith Urban. It boasts a capacity of nearly 22,000 seats, and received a nomination for arena of the year at the 2023 Academy of Country Music Awards.

“The University of Tennessee at Knoxville’s vision to unlock the potential of Food City Center has been validated by the response of our amazing fan base to the expanded opportunities,” Jason Pedone, director of Food City Center, told Knox News. “Food City Center is now the premier major entertainment facility in the region.”

Knoxville native Brad Painter is the booking director for Food City Center through venue management company, OVG360 . He works with promoters, agents and managers to ensure Food City Center is an option when artists are in the early stages of tour planning.

“Some artists approach their plans with Knoxville firmly in their sights, while others require a bit more coaxing to pay a visit to East Tennessee,” he explained. “But we’re always waving the Knoxville flag,”

Williams also confirmed Knoxville is “on the radar” for many artists. ASM Knoxville regularly attends conventions hosted by Pollstar, the International Entertainment Buyers Association and other organizations to develop and maintain relationships with promoters while amplifying Knoxville’s profile.

Knoxville is a ‘sweet spot’ for popular entertainers

UT and Knoxville’s big-city amenities with small-town appeal make Knoxville a desirable location for live entertainment. Bumpas noted it’s the “sweet spot” for attendance. Performers can book Knoxville venues and sell out quickly, an incentive as the live entertainment industry rebounds from earlier-COVID-19-era setbacks .

Knoxville is surrounded by entertainment hot spots to the east, west and south, but it shouldn’t be overlooked, Pedone said.

“Our fan base is so strong that touring acts are not forced to choose. They can play Knoxville, Nashville, Atlanta and Charlotte with confidence,” he said.

The Knoxville Civic Center attracts an array of performers, from touring musicians and stage productions to comedians such as Kevin Hart , Matt Rife and Jo Koy. The coliseum has a 6,500-person seating capacity and the auditorium can seat up to 2,500 people.

Other popular venues include the Tennessee Theatre, the Bijou Theatre and the Mill and Mine, all of which regularly host musical acts that range from legends to up-and-comers. These venues can accommodate between 700 and 1,600 people.

“It’s been wonderful to see this community’s ongoing support of the arts, and live entertainment, in particular. As you might imagine, a proven track record of selling tickets only helps us attract bigger and bigger names to Knoxville,” Painter said.

One show of East Tennessee concert market strength was viral sensation Oliver Anthony’s sold-out show last year. Anthony canceled his initial concert at the 1,500-capacity venue Cotton Eyed Joe following a ticket price dispute, and moved the show to the larger Knoxville Convention Center.

But demand was so high, the concert was moved a second time to the current Smokies Stadium in Sevier County. Over 9,500 tickets (including field seats) sold out in under two hours, according to a news release.

Could Knoxville be a new stop for massive stadium tours?

Stadium tours have historically been reserved for huge stars who bring music fans to football or baseball fields. Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Pink and Ed Sheeran all had successful stadium tours in 2023. But a musical artist hasn’t commanded Neyland Stadium since 2019, when Garth Brooks performed there for a crowd of 84,000 people , breaking a concert attendance record at the stadium. (Although Dolly Parton singing “Rocky Top” during the game against Georgia was definitely a 2023 Neyland highlight.)

“These artists are making ridiculous money,” Stig Edgren, a music industry lecturer at University of California, Los Angeles, told Knox News about stadium-touring artists.

“So, the people that are putting together these tours, they're picking the highest income producing stadiums in the country,” he continued.

The new Smokies Stadium under construction downtown and plans for a Neyland Entertainment District moving forward could be a game-changer for stadium concerts in Knoxville.

“The multipurpose stadium that will be home to the Knoxville Smokies and potentially One Knox Soccer Club will be a place for other (ideas for) outdoor concerts,” Bumpas said.

“I think it's awesome and I think Visit Knoxville would kick in like we did with Garth Brooks and use that as a huge showcase opportunity to the people that come in from all over to go there,” she continued.

UT recently moved to the next phase of developing an entertainment district between Neyland Stadium and Food City Center. The area would include restaurants, retail stores, a boutique hotel and condominiums and could increase concerts and entertainment events.

“I'd love to use (Neyland) Stadium more than seven or eight days a year,” athletics director Danny White told Knox News in December. "There's a whole host of opportunities that open up if we can create all these things working together."

If local promoters make proper offers and updated venues can accommodate production needs, it’s “perfectly feasible” for bigger pop acts to play Knoxville, said Edgren. And it doesn’t mean we’re out of luck if Knoxville is left off the first leg of tour dates, either.

Major stadium and arena tours are designed to hit big cities like Los Angeles, New York and even Nashville first, explained Edgren, who also produces live events. A city like Knoxville is likely on the second leg.    

“If you don't have the right stadium, then you wouldn't be considered on that (first stadium) run of the tour. But for arenas, you can get Billie Eilish, you can get Olivia Rodrigo, you can get Dua Lipa,” he said. “There's no reason why they shouldn’t play Knoxville.”

It’s not just for country fans

Country stars from the Knoxville area like Morgan Wallen and Kelsea Ballerini are making huge waves in the music world right now. Ballerini even sold out Food City Center last year, headlining her first arena concert in her hometown. But Knoxville isn’t just a place for country music.

Paul McCartney was a big get in 2022, Bumpas noted, and showed concert promoters that Knoxville can successfully host diverse performers. Since McCartney's show, rock bands , hip hop artists and country singers all have come through Knoxville.

“You bring a Lizzo to town and she sold well and she was a fantastic show and then that lends to the Eagles and then that lends, you know, to the next act,” Bumpas said. “So, I think it's a big deal for Knoxville to have a diverse lineup, and that should be a focus as we move forward.”

Food City Center is designed to be a draw for everyone and values entertainment of all genres, Pedone said. “Our fans have clearly demonstrated that via their consistent support of wide-ranging content,” he added.

Providing diverse entertainment for everyone to enjoy is a priority for OVG360 and ASM Knoxville, too, especially as the city’s population continues to grow.

“We are actively working on expanding our content offerings beyond those known quantities to feature other types of entertainment that work well here, like pop, rock, alternative and hip-hop,” Painter said.

“I think we’re just scratching the surface of what is possible here,” he added, hinting that “exciting announcements” are on the way but stopping shy of sharing more details.

Will Knoxville’s concert market continue to grow?

Knoxville venue mangers and promoters say they’re committed to maintaining a steady growth of live entertainment options for varied audiences over the next few years. Extensive Neyland Stadium renovations and the new Smokies stadium could play a vital role in this strategy, too.

But Bumpas does warn of city’s venue capacity threshold. Knoxville cannot host every performer and their fans. So, what a musical act has going on in their career, like a new album or major award nomination, and what’s happening locally are always factors when strategically booking performers.

As Painter put it, “I’ll never schedule a concert on the Saturday of a home football game.”

Though that impacts who comes to Knoxville and when, the demand will cause concerts to be scheduled further in advance and spread across the city’s venues, which makes for an overall healthy concert market, Bumpas noted.

“I continue to see packed calendars for all the area venues with no signs of that abating,” Painter added.

Amanda Knox reconvicted of slander in Italy in case linked to her quashed murder conviction

Florence, Italy  —  Amanda Knox , the American student who spent nearly four years in an Italian prison after being convicted in 2007 of murdering her college roommate Meredith Kercher before being cleared more than a decade later, was re-convicted Wednesday of slander for wrongly accusing a bar owner she had worked for at the time of the killing.

A court in Florence found that Knox had wrongly accused the innocent Congolese man of Kercher's murder, but the American will not serve more jail time in Italy as her new three-year sentence has already been satisfied by time she served on the reversed murder conviction.

Knox showed little emotion as the verdict was read in court Wednesday, but she was embraced by her husband in the courtroom afterward and they held each other for a while.

The court said Knox would have to pay the legal fees of and damages to Patrick Lumumba, the bar owner she had been working for part-time in Perugia at the time of Kercher's killing — a sum it said was still to be determined. 

Her lawyers said she would appeal Wednesday's ruling, and they have 45 days to file their appeal with Italy's highest court, the Court of Cassation in Rome. That court only rules on whether a lower court's ruling has been reached in line with legal procedures, however, not on the merits of any particular case.

The Florence court was to publish the reasoning for its decision within 60 days.

Knox had returned to the court this week in an effort to clear the last legal stain on her name.

"I will walk into the very same courtroom where I was reconvicted of a crime I didn't commit, this time to defend myself yet again," Knox said in a social media post on Monday, before she returned to the court. "I hope to clear my name once and for all of the false charges against me. Wish me luck."

Kercher, a British student, was found dead in her bedroom in the apartment she shared with Knox in the Italian city of Perugia. She had been sexually assaulted and had multiple stab wounds. Knox and her then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were convicted of murdering her in a sex game gone awry.

In 2015, after seven years of legal battles and flip-flop verdicts, Knox and Sollecito were cleared of the murder, but the slander conviction against Knox stood. She made the accusation against the Lumumba during a grueling 53-hour police interrogation soon after her arrest.

Very soon after implicating the man, however, Knox wrote a four-page statement in English casting serious doubt on the testimony she had given to the police.

"I want to make clear that I'm very doubtful of the veritity [sic] of my statements because they were made under the pressures of stress, shock and extreme exhaustion. Not only was I told I would be arrested and put in jail for 30 years, but I was also hit in the head when I didn't remember a fact correctly," she wrote in the statement.

Knox's defense team has always maintained that the accusation against the bar owner was coerced.

In 2019, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that Italy had violated Knox's human nights during police questioning. Knox said she was interrogated without a lawyer or a proper translator and that she was also beaten by the police. 

Italy's highest court ordered a retrial, which culminated Wednesday with the decision against Knox. 

Prosecutors had asked the court to confirm the slander conviction and impose a penalty of three years, which was granted, but as Knox already spent almost four years behind bars, starting in 2007, she won't have to spend any more time in jail.

Another man, Rudy Guede — whose footprints and DNA were found all over the crime scene — was convicted of murdering Kercher in 2008 and served 13 years in prison before being released in 2021.

FLORENCE, Italy — Amanda Knox failed in her bid to clear her name Wednesday as an Italian court reconvicted her of slander for accusing an innocent man in her roommate’s 2007 murder.

Knox wept after the verdict was delivered, as she appeared in an Italian courtroom for the first time in more than a decade. She was sentenced to three years imprisonment, but will not serve any more jail time as it counts as time already served.

Speaking after the verdict outside the courthouse in Florence, Knox’s lawyer told NBC News that he was “very surprised at the outcome of the decision and Amanda is very upset.”

Knox, 36, made headlines around the world as she was jailed and then cleared of killing her roommate, Meredith Kercher .

While Knox’s murder conviction was overturned, the slander conviction remained on her record. She had hoped that a not-guilty verdict would remove any lingering doubt about her innocence, but the court found that she had wrongly accused Congolese bar owner Patrick Lumumba of taking part in the murder. 

The case was largely based on two statements that Knox signed after she was questioned by investigators without a lawyer or a competent translator.   

Knox had recently arrived in Perugia when she endured a long night of questioning about the murder, despite having only rudimentary Italian language skills and she ended up accusing Lumumba of killing Kercher in the statements that were typed up by police. 

Wearing a pink top and blue skirt, Knox was accompanied by her husband, Christopher Robinson, and her legal team as she entered the courtroom early Wednesday for the retrial .

In a soft and sometimes breaking voice, Knox testified before eight Italian judges and jury members in fluent Italian, her arms resting on the courtroom bench.

She described the police interrogation as her “worst nightmare.” She said that she was questioned in a language she “barely knew.”

“When I couldn’t remember the details, one of the officers gave me a little smack on the head and shouted, ‘remember, remember,’” Knox said. “And then I put together a jumble of memories and the police made me sign a statement. I was forced to submit. It had been a violation of my rights.”

“I was a scared girl, deceived by the police and led not to trust her own memories,” she added.

Knox was 20 when she was sentenced to 26 years for Kercher’s murder at the apartment they shared in the idyllic central Italian university town of Perugia.  

The killing made headlines around the world after Kercher, 21, was found half-naked in a pool of blood with more than 40 stab wounds Nov. 1, 2007. Her throat had been slit. 

Kercher, a student from Britain's University of Leeds, was embarking on a year of study in Perugia, living in a rented flat with Knox and two Italian roommates. Friends called her “Mez.” The youngest of four children, she grew up on the outskirts of London.

Knox and her her Italian boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito , then 25, whom she had been seeing for around a week, were charged with Kercher's murder.

Prosecutors alleged it was a case of rough sex that got violent at the trial that was followed intensely in the United States, Italy and the United Kingdom. 

After the two were convicted in December 2009, Sollecito was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment.

Both spent four years behind bars as the case meandered through the Italian court system and, after a series of flip-flop verdicts, they were ultimately exonerated by the the Supreme Court of Cassation, Italy’s highest court in March 2015. 

The two were cleared seven years after the October 2008 conviction of Rudy Hermann Guede, a man from Ivory Coast whose DNA was found at the crime scene. Before his release in November 2021, Guede served 13 years of a 16-year prison sentence handed down after a fast-track trial that foresees lighter sentences under Italian law. 

However, one conviction against Knox remained: the defamation case against Lumumba who spent a few weeks in jail, even after he established an alibi that proved he could not have killed Kercher. 

But in January 2019, the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, France, ruled that the interview conditions had violated Knox’s human rights and ruled that the Italian legal system should pay her $20,000. 

“Knox had been particularly vulnerable, being a foreign young woman, 20 at the time, not having been in Italy for very long and not being fluent in Italian,” the court noted at the time.

In light of this, and following a constitutional reform, Italy’s highest court ordered a retrial of the slander conviction and it instructed Florence’s appeals court to consider only a handwritten statement that Knox wrote in English hours after she was questioned. 

“On the one hand, I am glad I have this chance to clear my name, and hopefully that will take away the stigma that I have been living with,” Knox who campaigns for better awareness of forced confessions, said on her podcast, Labyrinths, in December.

“On the other hand, I don’t know if it ever will, in the way I am still traumatized by it,” she said.

Amanda Knox, another guilty verdict and when you just can't clear your reputation

A court in Italy – once again – found Amanda Knox guilty . The court determined Knox, – who was convicted of the 2007 killing of flatmate and British student Meredith Kercher in Perugia, eventually annulled in 2015 – was guilty of slander on Wednesday and handed her a three-year jail sentence in a case related to the murder.

The sentence will have no practical impact as it is covered by the time Knox spent in jail before her conviction. Knox, who was in court for the verdict, had been sentenced to three years for wrongly accusing Congolese bar owner Patrick Lumumba of the killing of Kercher in an earlier case. Knox spent four years in jail for the killing of Kercher. Earlier in the week, she posted on X : "I hope to clear my name once and for all of the false charges against me. Wish me luck."

Though she didn't get to "clear (her) name" as she wished, experts say there are many ways for Knox to continue to rehabilitate her reputation and gain peace of mind – even if the justice system won't guarantee her that the way she wants.

"While she can't fix her reputation, she can choose to focus on her character," says Amy Morin, psychotherapist, author of " 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do " and the host of a  podcast . "If she lives according to her values, and feels good about what she's doing, it will likely take much less of a toll on her. She can't control how others see her but she can control how she behaves."

'The public may still think she's guilty'

Even if exonerated, some people – whether you did wrong or not – won't see you any other way.

"Amanda Knox might have to accept that some people are always going to think she's guilty. It's not her responsibility to change their minds," Morin adds. "No matter what she tries to do clear her name, the public may still think she's guilty of certain things."

Cases like Knox's, which are high-profile, only proliferate that much more in people's minds because everyone can't stop talking about them . "As we all know, the media is a pervasive and powerful medium to present information and has the ability to shape public perceptions and opinions in society," says  Chase Cassine , licensed clinical social worker. In turn, those targeted "may feel gaslit, emotional isolation, depression, anxiety due to uncertainty about the future and causing an unnecessary strain and distrust on personal relationships."

As Knox wrote for USA TODAY in 2016 : "I didn’t get my old life back when I came home. No exoneree does. It took me years to feel comfortable and confident enough to trust new people." She's since married and had two children.

Hmm: Is this the way to sidestep 'cancel culture' and be friends with everyone? Maybe.

'She's at an important juncture'

But where does Knox go from here, once again found guilty of something?

"She's at an important juncture," says Maryanne Fisher , a psychology professor at St. Mary's University in Canada. "Does she keep fighting, sharing her side, pushing for legal retribution, or does she – in the wise words of Queen Elsa from Frozen, 'let it go?'"

She could certainly make something of the renewed attention monetarily. "Where Amanda Knox goes from here is uncertain. However, I am certain Knox will attempt to leverage this renewed public interest for media visibility and profit," says Melvin L. Williams , associate professor of communication studies at Pace University.

For now, from a mental health standpoint, Morin suggets Knox focus on acceptance.

"She doesn't have to accept that it was OK that she was put through so much or that it's OK that so many people seem to still want her to be punished," Morin says. "But she might be able to accept, that for now, some people think she's guilty. Acceptance could help her then move forward."

This may mean rallying the village around her. Gathering "support from others who understand your plight can be a powerful tool when navigating daunting circumstances," says Laura Petiford , a licensed marriage and family therapist. "And while it sounds as if she plans to appeal this most recent decision , we can never control what other people think about us. Giving up on trying goes a long way in bolstering mental health ."

And as she wrote once before: "I now have opportunity to voice my experience and humanity as an exoneree. Most exonerees never get that chance, so I mean to share it. I will not disappear. I will advocate, I will bear witness."

In the face of another guilty plea, it still doesn't look like she's disappearing.

Amanda Knox reconvicted of slander in Italy for accusing innocent man in roommate’s 2007 murder

FLORENCE, Italy (AP) — An Italian court reconvicted Amanda Knox of slander Wednesday, quashing her hope of removing a legal stain against her that has persisted after her exoneration in the brutal 2007 murder of her British roommate while the two were exchange students in Italy.

The decision by a Florence appeals court panel marked the sixth time that an Italian court found Knox had wrongly blamed the killing on an innocent man, the Congolese owner of the bar where she worked part time.

Knox has argued that her statements to police were forced during an intense night of questioning that included bullying as she relied on her then-remedial Italian when she was a 20-year-old university student.

The panel of two judges and six jurors, however, confirmed the three-year sentence, which she already served during four years in Italian custody while the investigation and multiple trials ensued. The court’s reasoning will be released in 60 days.

Knox’s appearance Wednesday in Florence, in a bid to clear her name “once and for all,” was the first time she had returned to an Italian court since she was freed in 2011. Accompanied by her husband, Christopher Robinson, she showed no visible emotion as the verdict was read aloud.

But her lawyer, Carlo Dalla Vedova, said shortly afterward that “Amanda is very embittered.”

“We are all very surprised at the outcome of the decision,’’ Dalla Vedova said outside the courtroom. He added that Knox had expected an acquittal would put a cap on nearly 17 years of judicial proceedings.

Another defense lawyer, Luca Luparia Donati, said they expected to appeal to Italy’s highest court.

Knox’s new trial was set in motion after a European court ruling that said Italy violated her human rights during overnight questioning days after Kercher’s murder, deprived of both a lawyer and a competent translator.

Addressing the Florence court in a soft and sometimes breaking voice, Knox said that she wrongly accused Patrick Lumumba under intense police pressure.

“I am very sorry that I was not strong enough to resist the pressure of police,″ Knox read in Italian from a prepared statement, addressing the panel from the jury bench. She told them: “I didn’t know who the murderer was. I had no way to know.”

The slaying of 21-year-old Meredith Kercher in the idyllic hilltop town of Perugia fueled global headlines as suspicion fell on Knox, a 20-year-old exchange student from Seattle, and her new Italian boyfriend of just a week, Raffaele Sollecito.

Flip-flop verdicts over nearly eight years of legal proceedings polarized trial watchers on both sides of the Atlantic as the  case became one of the first trials by social media , then in its infancy.

All these years later, the intensity of media interest remained, with photographers massing around Knox, her husband and her legal team as they entered the courthouse about an hour before the hearing. A camera knocked her on the left temple, her lawyer Luparia Donati said. Knox’s husband examined a small bump on her temple as they sat in the front row of the court.

Despite  Knox’s exoneration  and the conviction of an Ivorian man whose footprints and DNA were found at the scene, doubts about her role persisted, particularly in Italy. That is largely due to the accusation she made against Lumumba.

Lumumba’s lawyer, Carlo Pacelli, told reporters that the accusation branded him across the world, and his business in Perugia floundered. He has since re-established himself in his wife’s native Poland.

“Patrick has always been dutiful to all of the court decisions, and all the courts up until today have affirmed that Amanda Knox was a slanderer,’’ Pacelli said.

Knox is now a 36-year-old mother of two small children who advocates for criminal justice reform and campaigns against wrongful convictions. She was freed in October 2011, after four years in jail, by a Perugia appeals court that overturned the initial guilty verdict in the murder case against both Knox and Sollecito.

She remained in the United States through two more flip-flop verdicts before Italy’s highest court definitively exonerated the pair of the murder in March 2015, stating flatly that they had not committed the crime.

In the fall, Italy’s highest Cassation Court threw out the slander conviction that had withstood five trials,  ordering a new trial , thanks to a 2022 Italian judicial reform allowing cases that have reached a definitive verdict to be reopened if human rights violations are found.

This time, the court was ordered to disregard two damaging statements typed by police and signed by Knox at 1:45 a.m. and 5:45 a.m. as she was held for questioning overnight into the small hours of Nov. 6, 2007. In the statements, Knox said she remembered hearing Kercher scream, and pointed to Lumumba for the killing.

Hours later, still in custody at about 1 p.m., she asked for pen and paper and wrote her own statement in English, questioning the version that she had signed, still in a state of confusion.

“In regards to this ‘confession’ that I made last night, I want to make clear that I’m very doubtful of the verity of my statements because they were made under the pressure of stress, shock and extreme exhaustion,” she wrote.

National Weather Service confirms tornado in Delaware County; Muskingum, Knox being surveyed

The National Weather Service has confirmed one tornado in Delaware County and is looking for more in Knox and Muskingum counties following strong storms that spawned possible tornadoes late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning.

Brief tornado confirmed in Delaware County

According to the NWS Wilmington office, which covers Central and Southwest Ohio, a "brief and weak" tornado touched down in extreme northeast Delaware County. The twister was rated EF0, with a maximum wind speed of 65 mph. It was on the ground for a quarter-mile with a maximum path width of 50 yards.

Video taken near the intersection of Olive Green and Fredricks roads shows a brief tornado developing and then dissipating quickly as it moves through a wooded area along Porter Central Road, according to the NWS. The Delaware County Emergency Management Agency reported minor tree damage in the area, supporting the maximum wind speed rating.

The Wilmington office said the Delaware EMA offered "considerable assistance" in confirming this tornado.

Where is Delaware County, Ohio?

Delaware County is about 30 miles north of Columbus.

NWS surveys continue in Muskingum and Knox counties

National Weather Service crews are out surveying the damage today, looking for confirmation.

The NWS Pittsburgh office , which covers a portion of Eastern Ohio, including Muskingum County, is conducting a storm survey near the Village of Frazeysburg, about an hour east of Columbus.

A spokesperson for the NWS office in Cleveland said in an email that they are in contact with the Knox County Emergency Management Agency about storm survey plans there.

Possible tornado strikes Frazeysburg in Muskingum County

The storm that spawned possible tornadoes in Frazeysburg struck at about 1 a.m., the Columbus Dispatch is reporting. On Facebook, Frazeysburg police said the storms struck after the expiration of a NWS tornado warning and caused some injuries, but none were considered serious.

The American Red Cross has opened a shelter at Frazeysburg Elementary, 120 E. 3rd St.

Muskingum County is about 55 miles due east of Columbus.

More possible tornadoes spotted over Knox County near Mount Vernon, Centerburg

In Knox County, the NWS reported tornado sightings over the villages of Gambier and Centerburg, as well as the City of Mount Vernon, the Dispatch reported. Some trees were downed.

After suspected tornadoes are spotted, crews from the National Weather Service survey possible tornado damage in person.

The pattern of damage, not how much damage was caused, determines whether it was a tornado,  according to the weather service . For tornadoes, with their  violently rotating columns of air , damage often has a chaotic appearance, with larger uprooted trees often crossing each other. Weather service surveyors often look at larger uproots of trees to get a true idea of where the wind was blowing from.

How are tornadoes rated?

The  Enhanced Fujita Scale  classifies tornadoes into the following categories:

• EF0:  Weak, with wind speeds of 65 to 85 mph
• EF1:  Weak, 86 to 110 mph
• EF2:  Strong, 111 to 135 mph
• EF3:  Strong, 136 to 165 mph
• EF4:  Violent, 166 to 200 mph
• EF5:  Violent, greater than 200 mph
