![travel journalism pdf Profile image of Ananta Das](https://0.academia-photos.com/50716516/18763366/36746353/s65_ananta.das.jpg)
In recent years, the tourism industry has seen a significant rise in the number of solo travelers. More so, the numbers of female solo travelers have also increased exponentially. So, what makes people attracted to destinations around the world? Travel journalism has been a basis for travelers all around the world to choose their next travel destination for a considerable amount of now. People all around the world read travel magazines, subscribe to travel and living channels and word of mouth plays an important part too. This research paper aims to find out how travel journalism impacts the decisions of the female solo travelers about the destinations they choose to visit and what effects it has on how these female solo travelers’ experiences after they reach the destination.

Solo female travel represents a growing market segment, with an increasing number of females preferring to travel alone. This paper aims to explore the international solo women's traveler experience; it uses a novel approach by studying the comprehensive experience of solo women travelers through analyzing user-generated content. It explores the opportunities, motivations, and constraints faced by solo women travelers. The content of user-generated videos is crucial to destinations' attractiveness and image. In this context, the researchers analyzed the 50 most viewed YouTube videos shared by solo women travelers using both inductive and deductive approaches. The content of the videos was analyzed using Leximancer to classify the most commonly occurring concepts in the text of transcripts, while the videos were also watched, and manual coded in relation to a conceptual model developed based on the existing academic literature. The findings showed a relationship between the type of accommodation solo females choose to stay in and the willingness to meet locals. Furthermore, the time of the day and the destination's reputation heavily influenced the activities and safety perception of the travelers. Management implications: Destination marketing organizations (DMOs) and travel planners aiming to target solo women travelers are encouraged to first recognize this interesting segment. Based on the videos that we have analyzed more content like this could be made available and having a DMO who caters specifically to the need of solo female travelers will enhance the destination image and will encourage others to come and visit. A solo female traveler-friendly destination could be launched for, and by, destinations that allow solo females to freely move and practice their activities at any time and any place. This will encourage travelers to visit, and consequently, the presence of other females will increase the overall safety perception as was found in the current research.
It has been claimed that travel experience is generally pleasure-based and consumed through images such as photographs and stories. It is often assumed that travel oriented publications such as travel magazines have substantial effects on people’s travel decisions, however the influence of these informal information sources has not been investigated to any great extent. The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of feature stories and photos in an ongoing source of information, a travel magazine, on travel decisions. For the current study, a path analysis was conducted to validate the hypothesized relationships (Figure 1), which assumes that the feature stories and photos have an influence on enhancing the interest in traveling in Arizona and on the perceived helpfulness of the magazine during ongoing information search, which can lead to influence on travel decisions and evaluation of the magazine as a source of travel information.

Abstract: The main objective of this article is to present an insight into the process of story creation in the travel section of British newspapers. The research presented focuses on this specific area of written press in order to understand how stories are created and how destination brand managers can use and control this source of information to build brand image. In order to understand how journalists create their stories the authors conducted a qualitative research with six travel journalists. Because of the exploratory nature of this research, it was decided that the best method of data collection was in-depth interviews. Although the aim of the travel section is to inform readers, the nature of its written stories differs from the newspaper’s other articles. In fact, reports published in the travel section tend to be positive and boast an optimistic outlook about places and leisure activities. Two main reasons may explain why this happens: first, the reason why a person reads the travel section; second, the symbiotic relationship between the press and travel or leisure organisations. These aspects influence the nature of the published stories and impact on how journalists write their articles. Despite the relevance of travel journalism, research on the topic is scant. The process of creating a story is poorly understood and therefore difficult for DMOs to manage this source of image creation

Solo travel is a growing trend, a significant proportion made up of international students who take solo trips during their study abroad. However there is limited empirical research on the Asian proportion of this growing market. This study explores the main motivations and constraints of 10 female Vietnamese students’ solo travellers through in-depth interviews. The findings indicate that travel motivations can be categorised into personal factors, such as freedom and flexibility, self-empowerment, independence and exploration, and social interaction factors including a lack of companions and meeting new people. Travel constraints relate to being female and alone and being of Asian descent. This research extends understanding of this important market segment. As a result, tourism providers and destination marketing organisation (DMOs) can capitalise by developing their products and marketing.

Ethical challenges for travel journalists in the digital world
Mylne, Lee (2021) Ethical challenges for travel journalists in the digital world. Professional Doctorate thesis, Queensland University of Technology.
Description
This thesis investigates contemporary travel journalism through an analysis of Australian travel journalists’ experiences and views on maintaining ethical standards in the digital world. The project provides insight into the impact of digital disruption on traditional travel writing and journalism ethics as they relate to travel journalism, using real-world experiences of travel journalists. It provides the basis for the development of principles for ethical travel journalism as a guide for established and emerging travel journalists in the face of widespread change in methods of practice and contributes to bodies of knowledge around best practice travel journalism.

Much of the existing empirical research on journalism focuses largely on hard-news journalism, at the expense of its less traditional forms, particularly the soft-news areas of lifestyle and entertainment journalism.
