Disclaimer: This post may contain affiliate links. All hosted affiliate links follow our editorial & privacy policies .

When we started BRMTG in 2020, our mission was to explore the Blue Ridge Mountains in search of our future mountain home, then share our favorite places with our readers.

Though our ability to travel that first year was limited by COVID concerns, we’ve managed to visit nearly 50 different mountain towns since travel restrictions were lifted.

We’ve found lots to love about many of the places we’ve visited. But we’ve also learned a lot about what separates great places to visit from the best places to live .

With that in mind, we’ve narrowed our list down to 3-4 towns that offer great restaurants, a cool cultural scene, and lots of natural attractions.

Sylva NC, a college town with 2,500 residents and close proximity to Cherokee , Bryson City , and Waynesville , is currently at the very top of our list.

Read on for our in-depth guide to the 15 best things to do in Sylva NC & Dillsboro NC, including all the best hiking trails , tourist attractions, restaurants , and shops.

American Museum of the House Cat

1. American Museum of the House Cat

We’ve had a wonderful time exploring unusual attractions in the Blue Ridge region, from the Expedition Bigfoot Museum in Blue Ridge GA and Goats On The Roof near Clayton GA to Mystery Hill in Blowing Rock NC.

The American Museum Of The House Cat (a.k.a. the WNC Cat Museum) is another fascinating oddity to add to the list, offering an entertaining outing for a great cause.

The museum was founded by Dr. Harold Sims, a retired Western Carolina University biology professor who collected cat-related art for more than 30 years.

From fine art dating back to the post- Civil War era and colorful folk art to antique toy cats, art glass cats, and cat posters, it’s an incredible array of unique collectibles unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

Sims and his wife also founded the Catman2 no-kill cat shelter. Donations and proceeds from self-guided museum tours help to provide discounted spay/neuter services to the local community.

Tours of the cat museum and cat shelter are currently available by appointment only (call  828-476-9376 for info) . But their new location at 5063 Hwy 441 S in Sylva is expected to open in Spring of 2023.

Located less than 20 miles from several of our favorite Blue Ridge Mountain towns (including Bryson City , Cherokee , and Waynesville), Sylva is one of the most quaint and charming small towns in North Carolina.

The Sylva Heritage Walk is a great way to explore it, with printed brochures available at the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center  at 773 W Main St.

Innovation Brewing Company, the Best Brewery in Sylva NC

4. Drinks at Innovation Brewing Company

Though it is smaller than hops-hungry towns like  Asheville , Boone , and  Brevard , the Sylva/Dillsboro area still has an impressive array of breweries to offer.

There are 4 Sylva breweries and one in Dillsboro, all of which are part of the Jackson County Ale Trail. You can download a map of the brewery trail on the Discover Jackson NC website.

All of these breweries have their ardent supporters, but the Innovation Brewing Company is arguably the most popular place in town.

Their Afternoon Delight Blonde Ale and Spaceman Pale Ale are two of their most popular beers on tap. But they also offer 25+ other draft beers, as well and local ciders, wines , and non-alcoholic options.

Cowee Mountains Overlook on Blue Ridge Parkway

5. Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway

Located 10 miles west of the Blue Ridge Parkway via US-74, Downtown Sylva offers easy access to the world-renowned scenic route.

Some of our favorite Blue Ridge Parkway overlooks nearby include the Woolyback Overlook (Milepost 452.3), Waterrock Knob Overlook (off a spur at MP 451.2), Richland Balsam Overlook (MP 431, the highest point on the BRP), and Cowee Mountain Overlook (MP 430).

There aren’t as many Blue Ridge Parkway waterfalls in this area as you’ll find in other parts of the BRP in  North Carolina . But we love the views at Soco Falls (MP 455.7), Dill Falls (MP 423), and Graveyard Field Falls (MP 418.8).

Dalaya Thai Cuisine, the best Asian Restaurant in Sylva NC

6. Explore the Best Dillsboro & Sylva Restaurants

As diehard foodies, one of the biggest challenges of exploring the Blue Ridge Mountains is finding the diversity of international cuisines we’re accustomed to at home.

Larger mountain towns like Asheville and Roanoke offer an exceptional variety of cuisines to choose from. But in smaller towns you’re often lucky to find more than a few ethnic restaurants .

The restaurants in Sylva and Dillsboro are more diverse, partly due to their proximity to a college, WCU. In fact, there are several  great restaurants  in Sylva that offer a wide variety of culinary influences on their menu.

One of our favorites, Guadalupe Cafe , featured “farm-to-table tropical fusion,” allowing us to sample Jamaican, Indian, and Mexican influences while using ingredients sourced from nearby farms .

Other great restaurants in the area include  Dalaya Thai Cuisine , Lucy in the Rye , Pie Times Pizza Company , the  Creekside Oyster House & Grill , and White Moon .

Nancy Tut's Christmas Shop in Dillsboro NC

7. Get Festive at Nancy Tut’s Christmas Shop

We’re huge fans of the Christmas holidays, and always love Christmas in the Blue Ridge Mountains .

In recent years we’ve especially enjoyed celebrating the holidays in beloved mountain towns ranging from Dahlonega and Helen GA to Asheville and McAdenville NC .

Although we visited Sylva during a sunny week in September, we found loads of holiday spirit at Nancy Tut’s Christmas Shop , a Downtown Dillsboro staple since 1969.

The gift shop’s shelves are stocked with the most impressive assortment of Christmas decorations we’ve seen, from cool collectibles and unique ornaments to retro items that brought waves of nostalgia.

In our eyes, their Christmas collection was even better than those we found at the Biltmore Estate and Omni Grove Park Inn , and at MUCH more affordable prices!

Dillsboro Chocolate Factory in Dillsboro NC

8. Indulge Your Sweet Tooth

Most of the small towns we’ve visited in the Blue Ridge Mountains seem to have at least one great gourmet chocolate shop.

But Sylva and Dillsboro are blessed with two, the Dillsboro Chocolate Factory and Baxley’s Chocolates.

The Dillsboro Chocolate Factory (which also has a store in Waynesville ) offers an extensive variety of hand-dipped chocolates, fudge, truffles, and shooters, including lots of sugar free and low-sugar varieties. They also have more than a dozen varieties of gourmet coffee , roasted in Asheville by Bean Werks Coffee & Tea.

Located on Main Street in Sylva, Baxley’s Chocolates  is a family-owned business that opened in 2015. Inspired by food scientist Russell Baxley, his son Steve and granddaughter Lauren make small batch, hand-crafted confections. Our favorites included their Peanut Butter Meltaways, Sugar Plums, Malted Milk Balls, Caramels, and Truffles.

Jackson County Courthouse in Sylva NC

9. Jackson County Courthouse

If you drive through the town  of Sylva, you can’t miss the Historic Jackson County Courthouse, which stands high on a hill overlooking the downtown business district.

Built by local industrialist C.J. Harris in 1913 in the Classical Revival style, the courthouse was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Harris was the man responsible for making the town of Sylva the seat of Jackson County, arguing that its railroad -based economy made it a suitable hub for business.

The Courthouse was used from 1913 to 1994, when a new Justice Center was completed. It was extensively remodeled from 2009-2011 and became home to the Jackson County Library  and the offices of the Jackson County Genealogical Society, the Jackson County Historical Association, and the Jackson County Arts Council.

Easily the most iconic (and most frequently photographed) of the Sylva NC attractions, the Courthouse is also an amazing place to photograph the sun setting over the charming mountain town .

Tuckaseegee River Tubing with Tuckaseegee Outfitters

10. Tubing the Tuckasegee River

River tubing in North Carolina is a popular pastime, and the Tuckasegee is one of the most beautiful rivers in NC on which to do it.

Based in nearby Whittier NC, Tuckasegee Outfitters offers a variety of guided and self-guided trips on “the Tuck,” including family-friendly river tubing , kayaking, and white water rafting tours.

The Tuckasegee is much more relaxing than some of the other rivers in the North Carolina mountains. But children do need to be a minimum of 4 years old and weigh at least 40 pounds to take a tour.

They also offer tours to different sections of the river, including a gentle section for a “lazy river”-style float and a section with some Class II rapids for a slightly more extreme tubing experience.

Judaculla Rock Petroglyphs in Cullowhee NC

11. See the Judaculla Rock Petroglyphs

Located near Western Carolina University in the neighboring town of Cullowhee, the Judaculla Rock  proved to be one of the most unique attractions near Sylva NC.

Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013, Judaculla Rock is the largest example of an American Indian petroglyph found in the state of North Carolina .

The petroglyphs were carved during the Late Woodland to Late Mississippian periods (about 500 to 1700 AD), and the soapstone rock is one of several archaeologically significant petroglyph boulders within a 15-acre area.

This site figures into a Cherokee legend  about a great giant named Judaculla , who wed his wife at the Cherokee town of Kanuga on the west fork of the Pigeon River in Haywood County. The carvings on Judaculla Rock are said to be scratches left by the giant when he jumped from his farm atop the mountain into the valley below.

Others believe the ancient markings may represent a map of the Battle of Taliwa , which was fought in North Georgia between the Creek and Cherokee people in 1755. The Creeks ultimately lost the battle, and were driven from their settlements along the Etowah River.

Exterior of Dogwood Crafters Co-Op in Dillsboro NC

12. Shop at the Dogwood Crafters Co-Op

Founded by a small group of artists in 1976, the Dogwood Crafters Co-Op has gradually grown into one of the most interesting and eclectic arts organizations in the   North Carolina Mountains .

One of our favorite places for shopping in Sylva and Dillsboro, their store is actually comprised of three log cabins  (built for tourists by a local family back in the 1930s) that were joined together.

The sprawling interior is essentially like 12 small shops in one, with 100+ artisans offering an incredible assortment of Appalachian -style crafts.

You’ll find handmade quilts, baskets, corn husk dolls, soaps, and apple butter  right next to fine art paintings, sculptures, stained glass, and ceramics.

This is also a great place to find unique Christmas decor (in the “Holiday Room”), and most of it is priced much lower than you’d expect to pay in more tourist-focused towns.

But if you want to get close to the river without getting wet, head to the Jackson County Greenway in Cullowhee, just 3.4 miles south of Downtown Sylva.

Also known as the Tuckasegee River Greenway, the 2.3-mile out-and-back hiking trail is popular among cyclists and runners, and is also wheelchair-accessible.

The paved trail only has around 50 feet of elevation gain, crossing over a large bridge and winding along a scenic stretch of the river.

Whitewater Rafting the Tuckaseegee River, photo via Dillsboro River Company

14. Whitewater Rafting with the Dillsboro River Company

We’ve always enjoyed white water rafting , tackling rivers from North Georgia and West Virginia to Alaska and Costa Rica.

North Carolina has more than its fair share of great places for rafting, including the French Broad River, Green River, Nantahala River , Nolichucky River, and Watauga River (near Boone NC ).

But the Tuckasegee River is generally considered to be one of the easier rivers in NC for   white water rafting , making it a great choice for beginners and younger rafters.

You can float down the Tuck for roughly 5 miles, which takes about 2 hours. Its Class I and II rapids make for a gentle introduction to the sport, so the minimum age is typically 4 and the minimum weight is 40 pounds.

The Dillsboro River Company is one of several local outfitters that offer guided and self-guided Tuckasegee River rafting tours. Guided tours start at $30 for kids ages 12 and under, and $40 for adults.

Remember that waterfalls and rocky summits can be dangerous. Never try to climb waterfalls or get close to a ledge to get a selfie.

Sylva is one such town, located in the heart of Jackson County (population approximately 2,500). It’s central location in Western North Carolina makes it a perfect base camp to explore the region, but you don’t have to travel far to be immersed in natural wonders.

Guadalupe Cafe, Sylva, NC

Thanks in part to the quality of the mineral-rich, soft water flowing through the Smoky Mountains, this region has become a hot spot for craft breweries. Grab a pint, or a flight, at one of the breweries in town. There are four to choose from – with plenty of locally crafted brews on tap!

  • Innovation Brewing

  • Balsam Falls Brewing

Check out the Jackson County Ale Trail if you want to explore more breweries in the region. If beer isn’t your thing, then there’s also wine and cocktails bars available.

Sylva’s Outdoor Adventures

Bear Trap Gap on the Blue Ridge Parkway

The mountains surrounding Sylva are full of opportunities for outdoor exploration. Take a stroll through the town’s Tree Walk, which features more than 50 different tree species, or explore some of the more adventurous trails throughout the mountains.

Popular Hiking Spot

For the adventurous spirit, Pinnacle Park has hikers climb over 3,000 feet in elevation along a 7-mile hike. It’s a long journey, but worth it to find amazing panoramic views of the Smokies. Pack a picnic and plenty of water for this hike.

For an easier challenge take a hike at Bear Pen Gap, located off of the Blue Ridge Parkway at mile marker 427.6 . Here you can take a 2.5 mile out-and-back trail to a mountain bald. From Sylva, head north on US-74 to Balsam, and then head north on the Parkway. You’ll find parking at the overlook and the trailhead is on the furthest left hand side.

In nearby Tuckasegee you’ll find Wolf Lake , which is popular with anglers and boaters.

Western NC Getaway: Best Things to do in Sylva NC

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

A mountain retreat can heal the soul – and Sylva is the perfect spot to do that! Picturesque and quaint, Sylva NC is a great alternative to those wanting a mountain getaway without the crowds of Asheville. Surrounded by mountains and streams, Sylva makes a great destination or stopping point along your journey.

This paper mill town has a proud heritage that is visible in its downtown revival. Take your photo at the “Greetings from Sylva NC mural” and see the sights. Park your car and explore the best things to do in Sylva NC. Once hunger strikes, don’t forget to check out some of the award-winning downtown options too!

Stroll downtown.

Walkable Main Streets are one of my favorite things! Historic Downtown Sylva is bordered by Mill Street and West Main Street. With lots of parking available along both streets, and some parking lots nearby, Sylva beckons visitors to explore on foot. Park at one end and visit the shops and restaurants. Stop at the Visitors Office near the Historic Courthouse for suggestions on events happening and what to see.

Hike Pinnacle Park

4110 Fisher Creek Road

Fans of hiking the outdoors will love Sylva’s Pinnacle Park. The seven-mile round trip trek with 3,000 ft. ascent rewards hikers with panoramic views of Sylva. Along the way, views of streams, waterfalls, and the valley re-center you.

flight of beers from Balsam Falls Brewing Co in Sylva, NC

Sip Your Way Through the Jackson County Ale Trail

Sylva is home to two breweries and two taprooms. Together with the taproom in Dillsboro and brewery in Cashiers, the six breweries comprise the Jackson County Ale Trail. Get your map at one of the local Visitors Centers or any of the breweries. A fun way to explore the surrounding area!

Innovation Brewing Company | 414 West Main Street

With over 25 beers on tap, you’re sure to find something to love. Lots of outside seating and frequent food trucks make this a perfect place for a night out. Try the Soulvation Tropical IPA if you’re a fan of juicy IPAs!

Balsam Falls Brewing | 506 West Main Street

Focusing on local ingredients, Balsam Falls is the spot in town to watch football games and other sports. Visit them on the 2nd Wednesday of each month for adult coloring! Try Into the Mist Southern IPA for a less hoppy option.

Lazy Hiker Brewing (Taproom) | 617 West Main Street

Based in Franklin NC, the Lazy Hiker Brewing taproom shares space with Mad Batter Kitchen in downtown Sylva. After hiking the beautiful areas nearby, come “Get Lazy” while sipping one of their beers. Try the Slack Pack IPA.

Nantahala Brewing Company Sylva Outpost | 5 Grindstaff Cove Road

After visiting the original Nantahala Brewing Company in Bryson City, NC, this outpost offers the same great beers. Using water flowing from the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, there’s a freshness to each brew. Try the Chocolate Covered Cherry Stout.

Jackson County Courthouse in Sylva, NC

See the Most Photographed Courthouse in NC

310 Keener Street

Built in 1914, the Jackson County Historic Courthouse, majestically located at the end of Main Street, provides fantastic views of the downtown area and the surrounding mountain backdrop. The historic courthouse currently houses the local library. Climb the 107 steps.

Around Christmas, the historic courthouse comes to life with lights and Christmas trees on the lawn.

Visit the American Museum of the House Cat

5063 Hwy 441 South

This oddity started with one man’s love of the beloved household cat. His collection of all things related to cats — think clocks, advertisements using cats, glass cats — is the largest of its kind. The museum gladly accepts cat-related antiques and oddities you may have to contribute.

assortment of chocolates from Baxley's Chocolates from Sylva, NC

Baxley’s Chocolates

546 West Main Street

Chocoholics will find their sweet spot at Baxley’s Chocolates on Main Street. Three generations of chocolate makers refined the craft. Whether you prefer truffles or fudge, you’re sure to find the perfect way to satisfy your sweet tooth here. They even carry authentic Wilbur Buds, which I discovered while visiting Lititz, PA .

Take a Selfie at the Sylva NC Mural

Located on Mill Street, across from White Moon Coffee, visitors will find the “Greetings from Sylva NC” mural. If you’re lucky enough, there won’t be cars parked in front of it for the perfect photo op! Instagram it or you weren’t here!

woman in front of wall license plates on building in Sylva, NC

Or a Selfie at the License Plate Building

12 Caldwell Street

This operating car repair business covered its building with license plates from all over! While they’re sometimes blocked by tow trucks, tires, or cars undergoing repairs (imagine that!), this oddity of a building is a fun spot to take a photo. I recommend going after hours so as not to disrupt the busy business.

Judaculla Rock in Cullowhee near Sylva, NC

Judaculla Rock

552 Judaculla Rock Road, Cullowhee

Just outside of town, this sandstone rock features petroglyphs that might be 2,000 to 3,000 years old. Unfortunately, erosion due to weather and prior visitors climbing and touching the rock is occurring, though there are efforts at preservation. This is a unique view of Cherokee culture.

Visit Movie Sets

Many scenes of the 2018 Oscar-nominated movie “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing” were filmed in downtown Sylva. Though the movie set signs are no longer there, fans of the movie will immediately spot the police department and the burning building as they stroll Main Street.

Portions of the 1993 movie starring Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones, “The Fugitive” were also filmed nearby. You can find the spot where the train wrecks into the bus, though it has become somewhat overgrown.

Try Fly Fishing

The Trout Capital of the World, Jackson County offers some of the best spots for fly fishing. The Fly Fishing Trail, the only one in the United States, contains 15 perfect locations to catch brown, rainbow, and brook trout. With local waters stocked annually, there is no risk of off-days fishing in these waters!

Papa's Monte Cristo at The Table in Sylva, NC

Where to Eat in Sylva NC

646 West Main Street

Opening in July 2020, The Table offers a unique menu of all-day breakfast and lunch dishes with every item made from scratch. This restaurant is an excellent option for those looking for gluten-free, vegetarian, or vegan meals. The Papa’s Monte Cristo was an absolute delight combining raspberries and ham, a much lighter version of the traditional Monte Cristo.

678 West Main Street

Winner of the Best of WNC several years in a row and described by Southern Living Magazine as “our favorite restaurant in the region,” Lulu’s should be included on your must-try list when visiting Sylva NC. Or enjoy the Martini Bar inside. The restaurant focuses efforts on recycling and going green. The fried green tomatoes are a favorite.

The Coffee Shop

385 West Main Street

Comfort food served with a friendly smile. If you’re looking for a home-cooked meal, this is the place. Don’t miss the homemade pies!

Where to Stay in Sylva NC

Most accommodations in Sylva NC are made through AirBnB ( first-time bookings discount code !) or other cabin rentals. The Blue Ridge Inn is located near the historic Jackson County Courthouse and an easy walk for weary travelers.

Walk until the end where you can pose in front of the historic courthouse. Climb the 107 steps for a gorgeous view of the historic downtown and capture great snapshots.

Enjoy Mountain Adventures in Cashiers, Dillsboro and Sylva

Some of North Carolina’s most beautiful scenes – mountain peaks, waterfalls and trails – are in Jackson County, where a great meal is never far away.

Making the decision to get away to the North Carolina mountains is easy. Deciding exactly where you’ll go may not be, with several attractive mountain towns dotting the landscape. Start your search with Jackson County and you’ll discover an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise .

Plan a multiday trip to the neighboring towns of Cashiers, Sylva and Dillsboro, easily flowing from one destination to the next. Led by hiking trails through the mountains, you’ll experience unforgettable sights and breathtaking views. And along the way, you’re always only a few steps from a remarkable meal .

One of the highest waterfalls in the Eastern U.S. – 411-foot Whitewater Falls – is near the state line just off Highway 281, south of Cashiers . Follow the quarter-mile paved trail from the parking lot to picnic spots and the upper overlook. If you’re feeling adventurous, head to the smaller lower overlook, which is down 154 wooden steps.

Next up is Whiteside Mountain , with 740-foot vertical cliffs that are the tallest in the East. It’s part of the panoramic view you’ll enjoy on the 2-mile loop trail that includes the 4,930-foot peak. Watch for peregrine falcons during the first half of the year. The cliffs are a nesting site for the raptors, which grab their prey from the sky.

Exploring Jackson County’s natural beauty is best enjoyed with love ones

The trailhead for Silver Run Falls is on Highway 107. It’ll take you about 5 minutes to trek the well-blazed and maintained trail to the falls, which is one of our state’s most accessible. At the bottom of its almost 40-foot drop is a sandy-bottomed pool. Take a dip there on a hot summer day or enjoy the view, which attracts nature photographers year-round.

You’ll always find a great meal in Cashiers. Settle on the brook-side porch at Cornucopia , where a pan of fresh cornbread starts your meal. Then enjoy one of its large burgers, hearty soups or popular Bloody Marys at Sunday brunch. Choose your favorite sauce and toppings for the New York-style crust Slab Town Pizza bakes in its brick oven. Or try a house specialty pizza (the Duke has sausage, pepperoni, bacon, ricotta, mozzarella and red sauce), sandwich, pasta or salad.

Dinner at Canyon Kitchen isn’t complete without a stroll around the property, which is in the second-home community of Lonesome Valley, surrounded by forests and granite peaks. The spectacle continues inside the restaurant, where the dinner menu changes with the seasonal ingredients gathered from local farms. It’s open Wednesday through Sunday nights from May through October, when a fireplace warms the open dining room that’s inside a renovated barn.  Food & Wine even included Canyon Kitchen on its list of "The Most Romantic Restaurant in Every State."

Below the dam that creates Lake Glenville , popular with boaters and anglers, is 150-foot High Falls . It’s a three-quarter-mile hike (easy going down, but strenuous coming back up), with stone and wood steps helping you navigate the 650 feet of elevation change from the trailhead. A second trail provides access to the fall’s base, but portions of it are sporty. Water flow makes this waterfall moody. When the river runs low, it’s approachable. But it’s a powerful force to witness when the water is high or a day when the dam is open, supplying kayakers on the Tuckasegee River’s West Fork with whitewater.

From the top of Waterrock Knob, you can see across to the Great Smoky Mountains

North Carolina’s most famous roadway – the  Blue Ridge Parkway – starts its journey north through Jackson County, where its highest elevation visitor center is at Milepost 451.2. From the parking lot, where you’ll find restrooms and picnic spots, follow the fairly steep 1.2-mile trail to the 6,292-foot summit of Waterrock Knob . Your effort will be rewarded with views that stretch 50 miles across Maggie Valley to the Great Smoky Mountains. It also offers an unencumbered vantage for sunrises and sunsets.

About 20 miles farther north on the Parkway is the Richland Balsam Trail . The uphill 1.5-mile loop climbs about 700 feet as it winds through fragrant Fraser and Balsam fir trees.

You’ll find 1,000-acre Pinnacle Park between the Blue Ridge Parkway and Sylva , the county seat. Follow the old logging road to Pinnacle Bald. The almost 7-mile round trip requires significant effort, so wear sturdy shoes and bring water. You can see the bald just above the tree line from Sylva, where a trail leads to refreshing destinations.

Sylva’s booming downtown brewery scene includes microbreweries such as Innovation Brewing , which serves dozens of different beers in a year, and  Balsam Falls Brewing , whose owners brew with fruit they grow. Walk along Main Street to explore the shops and other attractions downtown. Though cozy resorts and bed and breakfasts can be found tucked among the area mountains, Sylva is also home to most of the county’s national brand lodging .

Toast to good times at Innovation Brewing in Sylva

When you’ve worked up an appetite after great mornings or afternoons of exploration, you’ll be pleased with Sylva’s restaurants too. Choose among popular staples, such as crab cakes, from Lulu’s on Main’s deep menu, which is augmented by daily specials.

But you can’t spend time in North Carolina and not try the barbecue – your friends back home will ask. Many restaurants across our state are revered for their pork that’s lovingly smoked over a hardwood fire for hours. In Dillsboro , a few minutes’ drive from Sylva, Haywood Smokehouse is one of only a few barbecue restaurants statewide that also prepares beef brisket. It’s served with tender collard greens, creamy coleslaw and baked beans studded with burnt ends. Haywood Smokehouse might also be one of the highest-reviewed restaurants you encounter.

In this article, 12 cities were chosen for " awe-inspiring surroundings, fascinating attractions, colorful festivals, friendly locals and warm hospitality".

Read about the WNC cities that made the list below.
