Do you find yourself daydreaming of far away places? For people with a sense of adventure and a love of new experiences, a career in travel can be incredibly rewarding. But with the rise of new technology and a constantly changing economy, jobs in this area look almost nothing like they did just a couple of decades ago.

What does a career in travel look like today? Here, we’ll explore some of the most common professions in this area and how they can help you see the world.

Flight Attendant

Also known as in-flight crew member, cabin crew member, cabin attendant, air host(ess), and airline steward(ess).

Of all the careers in travel, flight attendant is probably one of the most people-focused. These friendly professionals are the face of the airline industry, responsible for ensuring passengers are safe and comfortable for the duration of their flight. You may remember them from the last time you traveled—perhaps more for the drink cart in front of them than for their personality.

But flight attendants do much more than people assume. In addition to providing basic customer service, they also secure the plane during takeoff, landing, and bouts of turbulence, and assist in emergency situations when they occur by leading evacuations, administering first aid, and even doing some firefighting. Maintaining a pleasant disposition is important in this career, but it’s really only the tip of the iceberg.

What are the perks of being a flight attendant?

Many people enter this career because they love to travel. And, for those with wanderlust, that’s probably the best part of the job: flight attendants literally get paid to fly. Airlines provide staff with free accommodation on long haul flights, plus, in most cases, a daily food allowance, so long-haul flights can essentially become mini all-expenses-paid vacations. There may only be a little bit of extra time to explore the destination between landing and takeoff, but it’s still an incredible way to see the world.

Other perks include the downtime. Although the work itself can be intense, it also involves a lot of leisure. On lengthier trips, flight attendants even get to sleep on the job! They also have more control over their schedule than people in more “typical” careers; every few weeks, attendants “bid” on all available flights to decide who flies when and where. Shifts are assigned by seniority, which means that, with enough time and experience, flight attendants can craft their dream schedule.

These perks, plus the fact that it’s possible to get hired right out of high school, makes flight attending an appealing line of work for many.

How much time do flight attendants spend away from home?

A career as a flight attendant isn’t all fun and games. Full-time attendants usually spend between 75 and 100 hours a month in the air, and another 50 hours on the ground, doing paperwork, waiting for planes, and preparing for flights. This can translate to a lot of time away from home, often working long, variable hours.

Perhaps because of the bizarre schedule, about one in four flight attendants work part-time. This option is obviously less lucrative than working full-time, but can make it easier to maintain a relatively normal lifestyle and raise a family.

Flight attendants are paid to see the world…sort of

Not only does flight attending require a lot of time away from home, it also involves a lot of unpaid work. Salaries are completely dependent on the number of hours spent in flight, so flight attendants aren’t compensated for the time they spend boarding, taxiing, or commuting to and from the airport. If a flight gets cancelled or delayed, so does the attendant’s pay.

In the US, the average salary is about $45,000. But depending on the airline, as well as the attendant’s schedule and level of experience, that number can range anywhere between $23,000 and $80,000.

Travel Agent

You’ve probably seen her before in an old movie: a smiling woman in a headset, stationed at her computer against a backdrop of faded tropical posters. But the day-to-day of today’s travel agents looks very different from what it did even ten years ago.

What do travel agents do?

At the most basic level, travel agents help simplify the trip planning process for their clients. They research fares and schedules; book flights, tours, and hotels; and advise clients on how to make the most of their time away. The specifics of their day-to-day vary a lot depending on where and for whom they work. But no matter what their focus, all travel agents share a common goal: customer satisfaction. This is a people-focused profession, committed to ensuring clients have the most pleasant, safe, and rewarding travel experiences possible.

There are two kinds of travel agents…

....each with very different lifestyles:

• Leisure travel agents work primarily with individuals, organizing everything from family vacations to honeymoon getaways. Although some of them work independently, most choose to work under a host agency. These businesses “employ” home-based agents through independent-contractor agreements, offering them services like marketing, training, and technology in exchange for a cut of their commissions.
• Corporate travel agents , on the other hand, primarily work with businesses, booking accommodation and flights for employees attending sales meetings, conferences, and more. Whereas leisure agents often work remotely on their own schedule, those in corporate positions tend to work in offices. It’s a standard 9-to-5 job, or something similar.

How do travel agents make money?

Travel agents earn their income in three ways, through commissions, service fees, and salary. Typically, vendors pay a 10-15% commission whenever an agent books a car rental, hotel, or cruise for a client. They also pay about 20-30% on travel insurance sales, though all of these rates can vary depending on the vendor, the agent, and how the booking was made.

In addition to commissions, some travel agents also charge clients a service fee for the time spent researching and creating their itinerary. These usually range somewhere between $75 and $200, but can be as high as $500 for more complicated trips.

Finally, many agents who work for an employer—either a host agency or a corporate sector company—also earn a salary on top of their commissions, adding a bit of stability to their income.

How much do travel agents make?

Not surprisingly, there’s a lot of variation in how much travel agents make. The average annual wage for US travel agents is just shy of $40,000 , but agents can earn as little as $23,000 or as much as $68,000.

Do travel agents get to travel themselves?

The bulk of a travel agent’s time is usually spent indoors: either at home, if they work remotely, or in an office. Most of their day is spent on the phone or the computer, talking to clients, airlines, hotels, and other vendors or preparing itineraries.

That said, many do spend some time visiting the destinations they promote in order to make better-informed recommendations to their clients. While away, they might visit restaurants, resorts, or hotels, or even try a guided tour.

Plus, many agents are able to use their connections to travel at a discount price. So seeing the world may not always be part of the job—but it definitely can be.

Is travel agent a doomed profession?

Online booking is only getting easier, and travelers are increasingly choosing to organize their own flights and accommodation. Although many travel agents are still running successful businesses, employment opportunities are expected to decrease by 12% in the next 10 years. For the right person, a career in this industry is still possible—but staying afloat will take dedication, adaptability, and a healthy dose of optimism.

People skills, local knowledge, and a sense of adventure—these are just some of the traits that make for a stellar tour guide. For extraverted explorers, a career in this field can be fun, varied, and rewarding.

Do tour guides get paid to explore the world?

At the most basic level, tour guides help travelers make the most of their trip by providing cultural, historical, or environmental information about their local surroundings. Working on foot, bus, bicycle, or even riverboat, they guide their clients through some of the most stunning destinations on earth, offering safety tips, expert knowledge, and helpful advice along the way. From the calm Tuscan countryside to the busy streets of Tokyo, tour guides really can work anywhere.

However, the life of a tour guide isn’t always full of novelty and excitement. While some tour guides do travel on the job, many work primarily in a single destination, showing visitors around a particular city, cultural site, or museum.

What are the different kinds of tour guides?

Tour guides can look dramatically different depending on where they work and what kind of travel experience they offer. Some of the most common tour guide variations include:

• Heritage Guides provide historical, archeological, or architectural information about ancient sites such as tombs, temples, and museums.
• Culture Guides offer knowledge about the lifestyle, religion, or cuisine of the local population. They might focus on one particular city, specialize in certain sites (like vineyards or ancient temples), or cover an entire geographical region.
• Adventure Guides lead clients on active, experience-based tours of the destination. Guides typically focus on one or more sports, such as trekking, skiing, or scuba diving, and have undergone some form of outdoors and first aid training.
• Nature/Eco Guides help visitors enjoy the local wildlife and landscapes, offering tours or safaris of deserts, gardens, forests, and more.

There are different roles available within each of these areas. Tour guides simply offer commentary about the destinations they visit, whereas tour directors are also responsible for planning the itinerary, coordinating the logistics, and trouble shooting any complications that arise along the way.

Do tour guides actually get paid?

Tour guiding is a fun gig, but not a particularly well-paid one. The average tour guide salary punches in just under $24,000 US , although experienced tour guides earn about $35,000 per year. Of course, this can vary depending on location, specialization, experience, and clientele.

Luckily, it’s also a relatively low-barrier career, usually requiring little more than a drivers license and an eager attitude. You may need to pass a first aid course or some other form of professional training for certain jobs, but you probably won’t be paying off any major student loans.

Travel Blogger

Equally low-barrier and adventurous is the world of travel blogging. Requiring little more than a laptop, a strong internet connection, and an entrepreneurial spirit, this exciting career can open doors all across the globe.

How do travel bloggers make money?

It may not look that way from their websites, but travel bloggers do a lot more than just write and explore. That’s because, like most bloggers , they rarely make money from the posts they produce. Instead, travel bloggers rely on a mix of advertising, sponsored campaigns, freelancing, and affiliate linking to generate income, using their blog primarily as a platform to attract potential partners. Many even sell related products, such as books, travel guides, podcasts, or public speaking services, on the side to make extra cash.

Because of this, the finances of travel blogging can look extremely different from one person to the next. While there are some bloggers who report making as much as $150,000 a year, others are barely able to break even. According to a survey of more than 1000 bloggers, only about 17% are able to sustain their lifestyle on their blog salaries, while more than 80% never make more than $100.

But although it’s a tough industry, it is possible to succeed. By diversifying their income and investing enough time and effort, well-established travel bloggers can make a stable $2,000 to $5,000 a month.

How do I become a travel blogger?

One of the reasons so many travel bloggers fail is because it’s so easy to become one. The real question isn’t “How do I become a travel blogger?” but “How do I become a successful one?”

To get started, aspiring travel bloggers will need a laptop, a working website, a passport, and enough cash to live and travel for at least two years. That’s because building a large enough audience to monetize takes time. Those who don’t have the savings required will likely need to take on additional part-time work while they get started.

Next, most new bloggers dedicate their time to posting lots of high quality, interesting, and useful content. The content itself can be about almost anything—travel tips, photography, hiking recommendations, etc—as long as it’s relatively frequent (one-two times a week) and provides real value to readers. Many bloggers also pitch stories to major media outlets, write guest posts on popular blogs, or invest in digital advertising to gain further attention. But no matter the strategy, the goal for any beginner travel blogger is the same: get readers first, revenue second.

What is a super yacht?

Super yachts are massive, luxury boats measuring anywhere from 24 to 100 metres long. Expensive to buy and even more expensive to maintain, they are usually owned by the extremely rich and famous and their families. While some super yachts never make it out of the harbor, others will travel to some of the most exclusive destinations on earth, making them one of the most attractive work settings for those with wanderlust.

What does a super yacht crew do?

No matter what its size, almost every super yacht is manned by a group of skilled professionals: the super yacht crew. These personable and hard-working individuals live on board the vessel during long journeys, assisting with everything from cleaning to navigation.

Roles are varied, and can differ from yacht to yacht, but the most common positions include:

• Captain and First officer
• Mate and Deckhand
• Chief and Junior Steward(ess)
• Chef and Sous Chef

Is the super yacht life as glamorous as it sounds?

Many people are attracted to a super yacht career because of the lifestyle involved, but the daily reality of the super yacht crew is a little less glamorous than you’d expect:

• Living Conditions: Crew members live, eat, and work together closely for the duration of the voyage, which can be weeks or even months long. Accommodations are usually small and simple—either solo cabins or shared bunk rooms—and although privacy is possible, it’s usually rare. If you need a lot of alone time, this probably isn’t the career for you.
• Food: Meals aboard are usually prepared by the crew chef, which means they tend to be delicious, extremely high quality, and—best of all—free.
• Schedule: Super yacht crew live and work in the same space for months on end, which can make it difficult to maintain any real separation between work time and down time. Crews tend to be small and the clientele are often demanding, so working 12- to 14-hour shifts isn’t unusual.

Do super yacht jobs pay well?

Depending on the crew member’s experience and the size of the vessel, super yacht crew salaries can vary significantly. But in general, this is a very well-paid line of work—especially relative to other travel careers. Chief stewards can expect to make anywhere from $3000 to $8000 a month, and it’s not uncommon to see salaries as high as $90,000 on larger vessels.

Corporate Travel Careers

What kinds of travel companies offer corporate careers?

Corporate travel careers exist in a wide array of settings, each of which comes with its unique set of opportunities, perks, and drawbacks.

Because of the diversity of options, it can be hard to know where to look for a corporate travel job. But some of the most common work settings include:

• Airlines and airports
• Travel agencies
• Tour organizations
• Tourism offices
• Cruise companies (boat, bus, rail, etc.)

Now’s a great time to consider a career in travel and tourism . More people than ever are traveling around the world. Naturally, that means there are many opportunities to facilitate said travel.

Where are travel jobs booming?

Jobs within travel are outpacing just about every other profession across the United States. Travel destinations like New Orleans, Oahu and Las Vegas — just to name a few — have seen a dramatic increase in tourism since the pandemic ended (a.k.a. “ revenge travel ”). Likewise, travel jobs are springing up everywhere to take advantage of the excess opportunity. This is also coinciding with a renaissance of sorts for contemporary travel advisors ( ahem ).

What’s fueling this job growth?

It’s not exactly clear why travel is more prominent now than it was prior to the pandemic, but it’s not isolated to the United States. Many destinations across the world, including Portugal and Italy in Europe and Japan in Asia, have seen record numbers of travelers — and these trends are reciprocated on every continent.

Which sectors in the travel industry are experiencing the fastest job growth?

It varies by area, but broadly, hospitality (think hotels and other accommodations), tourism and travel advising are the three sectors that are seeing the most growth.

1. Airport staff & flight attendants

Of all the travel industry jobs, airport staff are among the most critical since they facilitate most long-distance trips. Entry-level positions rarely require more than a high-school diploma, with pilots, advanced mechanics and some administrative staffers being the only major exceptions. 

If you’re eager to explore yourself, flight attendants are often able to stay overnight in new cities before returning to their home airports. 

The downside is that airport staff’s schedules are largely determined by the airlines, so if you’re looking for flexibility in the travel industry, you may want to consider a different path.

2. Hospitality professionals

From hotel staff to property managers, hospitality professionals provide travelers with lodgings and amenities during trips. Front-facing roles like concierge and customer service staff rarely do much traveling themselves, but as in any corporate business, higher-tier roles are often required to visit new places for conferences, expos and so on. 

Most entry-level jobs in the travel industry’s hospitality sector offer comparable pay and requirements to any other entry-level job. However, the most reputable hospitality providers — such as the coolest hotels in Vegas or the best places to stay in Utah — tend to offer lucrative salaries in exchange for providing discerning travelers with white-glove service and elite comforts.

3. Cruise workers

Cruise-line jobs mirror roles in both the airline and hospitality fields since cruises are a mode of transportation, and most offer onboard accommodations. 

For the right person, it can be an awesome experience to be ocean- or river-bound for up to months at a time. However, it’s worth noting that some of the lower positions are among the most grueling jobs in the travel industry, as workers tend to stay in tiny shared cabins and navigate strenuous schedules. 4. Travel writers & bloggers

Generally, travel writers get to blend their wordsmithing skills with their passion for exploration. It can be an extremely exciting job in the travel industry that regularly allows you to research and wax poetic about new destinations, modes of travel and more. 

Of course, not all travel writers are able to travel themselves, and compensation can be all over the place. The best positions tend to be quite lucrative, while others may be better suited as part-time roles.

On another note, travel writing (or blogging) is one of the few jobs you can do remotely while traveling with virtually no drawbacks.

5. Tour guides & operators

Helping travelers better understand a destination you’re passionate about can be an extremely exciting and rewarding job in the travel industry. Is there a better way to share your pride in a location than to teach travelers about what makes it special? 

Tour guides can highlight all sorts of things, too: beer tours in Brussels , haunted tours in New Orleans, luxury tours in Egypt …there’s really no limit to the topic or locale.

Oftentimes, minimal or no experience is required to become a tour guide. But the trade-off is that most tour operators are seasonal and / or tend to be part time.

6. Travel advisors (a.k.a. travel agents)

8 Great Jobs for People Who Like to Travel

Some of us possess wanderlust, which is a term with German origins. Quite literally, it means to have a lust for wandering. If you’re looking for a job that allows you to “see the world,” these career paths might be just the ticket.

1. Event planner

The hospitality industry—while rocked by the COVID-19 pandemic—is back, and someone has to plan those in-person conferences and events! An event planner helps companies design experiences that achieve strategic goals. For instance, they might plan training conferences, fundraising galas, or large meetings. The event planner needs to be able to translate a client’s ideas into a seamless, cost-effective event where attendees don’t have to think about logistics—and the planner likely will travel to do so, both for site visits and the actual events.

2. Tour guide

A wide range of tour guide jobs exist—but if you work for a company that arranges group tours, you’ll get to travel. Of course, being a tour guide means you’ll be facilitating others’ travel (which means dealing with their foibles), but you’ll likely enjoy special access to tourist sites, as well as make useful connections throughout the industry. You might be able to tack a few days on to the end of a trip.

3. Professor

Earning tenure as a professor is a highly stressful endeavor, but along the way you may be able to spend time in some interesting locations. Tenure-track professors attend many academic conferences, some of which take place abroad. They also have opportunities to teach in study abroad programs, particularly summer study abroad programs in which American professors travel with a group of students for short-term expat experiences.

4. ESL teacher

Almost 1.5 billion people speak English worldwide, and many opportunities exist for English as a second language (ESL) teachers to work in other countries. You’ll need a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certificate to secure a position teaching English to non-native speakers in other countries.

5. Travel nurse

Working as a travel nurse is one way to ensure you never get bored. As a travel nurse, you’ll work for a staffing agency as opposed to a specific physician or medical facility, and you’ll be placed based on need. You may find yourself securing licensure in a new state or even a new country. The good news is, if you don’t like one area of nursing, you’ll soon be on to new adventures. Travel nurses often have higher salaries than traditional RNs, but the costs of temporary housing may be greater, and your available benefits, such as health insurance, will vary by assignment and the time you take off in between.

6. Sales representative

A sales representative can expect to put in long hours on the road as they travel to visit clients, but if you like to meet new people, pursue competitive goals, and enjoy a high level of autonomy in your job, then it could be the right job for you. Typically, you’ll be assigned a territory or region to cover, so while you might not see the world, you’ll have the chance to get to know a particular area well.

7. Business consultant

If you have an MBA and work at a big consulting firm, it’s likely you’ll have the opportunity to travel and spend time meeting with clients to make presentations and do research. Of course, some of this travel has been curtailed with the ease of remote work, but you’ll still find opportunities to travel in search of client facetime.

A buyer is responsible for deciding what customers will want to purchase and securing that inventory. It’s a high-stress field—if you’re not on target with your trend-watching and can’t negotiate a good profit margin, you might not be long for the industry. But if you are successful, you’ll have the opportunity to go to market, meet with suppliers, and visit manufacturing facilities.

• Careers in luxury-travel advising are growing as travelers seek stress-free, high-end experiences.
• Gen Z and millennials are driving the growth, seeing vacation spending as a worthy expense.

The internet has revolutionized the way people research and book travel. Travelers now have access to hotel- and flight-booking platforms, travel content on social media, travel blogs, and travel publications.

Today's travelers, especially those seeking luxury experiences, don't always want to wade through all that information. Consequently, the travel-advisor industry has experienced significant growth in recent years , especially among Gen Z and millennial travelers . According to Grand View Research, the global luxury-travel market is worth an estimated $1.3 trillion and expected to grow 7.9% from 2024 to 2030 .

Luxury travelers are not necessarily looking for the best deals but the best way to plan a trip without the hassle. This is where a luxury-travel advisor comes in. Agents can provide personalized itineraries, access to upgrades and selective experiences, and support throughout the trip.

Business Insider talked to three luxury-travel advisors about the industry's growth and how to transition into travel advising.

Why the luxury-travel industry is booming

Diana Hechler, the owner of D. Tours Travel , said the luxury-travel industry has grown because travelers have access to more luxury-level properties, and more people are willing to pay luxury prices. Also, a vacation is seen as a necessity for Gen Z travelers .

"People are booking vacations more than ever and want them to be stress-free and restorative. And nothing does that better than luxury travel," Hechler told BI. "Despite the higher prices, the segment of travelers that want luxury and are willing to pay for it has grown as well."

Angela Adto Tepper, the owner of AZA Luxury Travel , said that the shift toward luxury travel had increased since the pandemic, with more Americans prioritizing travel.

"The luxury-travel sector has evolved to prioritize wellness, health, sustainability, and transformative experiences, and people are now prioritizing meaningful travel experiences and pursuing bucket-list trips," Tepper said. "Advisors have adapted by curating journeys tailored to each client."

Why travelers work with advisors

One of the biggest advantages of working with a travel advisor is that it helps travelers cut through the noise and information overload. Traveler agents work on commission, getting a percentage of hotel, cruise, or tour costs, which is paid after a trip is over. Many agents also charge an up-front fee for research and planning.

"The internet was supposed to be the death of advisors, and instead, it's made us more valuable than ever," Hechler said. "While some people love to spend time researching their vacations and doing it themselves, many don't have time to 'waste' on the internet starting from scratch. Saving time is problem-solving for almost everyone; anytime you can solve people's problems, you can have a successful business."

Travel advisors can also offer complimentary upgrades and have access to experiences that might not be available to the public.

"Working with a travel advisor can be summarized by three E's," Tepper said. "We can provide expertise and insider knowledge, extras with personalized service, and emergency assistance."

With the prevalence of Instagram and TikTok, it might seem like everyone is going to the same places. So booking luxury hotels or making reservations at Michelin-starred restaurants is no longer enough; travelers want advisors to curate one-of-a-kind experiences.

"The luxury-travel sector is not just about opulence and indulgence but also about creating meaningful, enriching experiences that leave a lasting impact," Maurice Smith, the founder and CEO of the luxury-travel agency Eugene Toriko , said. "Sustainable and regenerative travel practices are becoming increasingly important, focusing on preserving and enhancing the destinations we visit."

Tips for transitioning into travel advising

If you're ready to move into the industry, it's worth taking stock of your skills first. For example, Tepper said people with event-planning experience might transition well into travel advising since itinerary planning and familiarity with booking platforms are part of the job. She added that soft skills, like interpersonal communication, problem-solving, and adaptability, would also come in handy.

Tepper recommended contacting an advisor before switching over. "If you're considering the career change, one of the best things you can do is secure a reputable mentor," she said. "A mentor can offer invaluable guidance, accelerating professional growth and enhancing skill development, leading to greater success and higher earnings."

It also helps to study travel trends, have a deep knowledge of a destination, and build expertise around types of travel, such as multigenerational trips , cruises, or honeymoons. Tepper said that prospective advisors must also remember that they're not necessarily looking for the "best discounts" for clients but creating tailored trips with impeccable customer service.

"To maintain the quality of our personalized work, we occasionally have to turn away a client," Tepper said. "Not every client is the right fit for our service. This selectivity ensures that we can devote the necessary time and attention to crafting great experiences for everyone while upholding the high standards we have put in place."

The benefits of travel advising

Travel advising provides valuable services to travelers, but agents can also receive perks like complimentary trips sponsored by hotels and tourism boards and travel discounts.

"One of the biggest perks of this job is the opportunity to explore the world and indulge in my passion for travel," Tepper said. "Imagine waking up in a new city, tasting exotic cuisines, and immersing yourself in diverse cultures while doing what you love. For me, it's a career that blends passion and purpose."

The job also comes with a few challenges. Smith said that agents must stay on top of ever-changing travel regulations to ensure the safety of their clients. But ultimately, he said, it's a rewarding career that prioritizes relationships.

"Travel advising offers flexibility and the potential to work remotely, allowing for a good work-life balance," Smith said. "Additionally, the satisfaction of helping clients create unforgettable memories and the joy of turning their travel dreams into reality is incredibly rewarding."

In a world of high-speed living and remote jobs, earning money anywhere is possible. Travel isn’t cheap. It costs a lot of money, and working in an office does not leave much time for leisure. If you are on vacation and have seen all there is to be seen, you may look for something else to pass the time.

Remote jobs don’t have to be boring. In fact, many of them are great options for earning free or discounted travel. You just have to know how to choose which of these travel jobs is right for you.

1. Blogging

Blogging while traveling is a great way to earn some money. Your office is wherever your laptop is, so you are never tied down to one place. This can help you travel the world with just a laptop and a bit of data, which you can always find in local cafes or restaurants . It’s even better if you do travel writing, so you can combine firsthand experience with creative writing that helps others plan their travels.

2. Vlogging

Similar to blogging, video blogging, also called “ vlogging ,” is a visual form of content. You can write blogs for your website but also work as a freelancer for other people’s websites. When it comes to vlogging, however, people usually vlog for their own channels. It takes more time to succeed but can also be more rewarding monetarily. All you need is a smartphone with a nice camera, or if you want to be fancy, a laptop with some video editing software like Adobe PremierePro or DaVinci Resolve.

3. Video Commercials

This one is both fun and rewarding. If you have a smartphone with a decent camera and invest in an excellent DJI drone, you can earn some nice money on your travels. Combine this with an investment in a decent laptop and a video editing course, and you have a recipe for success. When I was on vacation in Corfu , I discovered an opportunity with their beautiful beachfront Tavernas. I packed my drone, visited a few of them on foot, and offered them my services. I scored two jobs for filming a video ad and one logo redesign job, which made me a nice profit for less than a full day of work.

4. Singing and Playing an Instrument

Singing or playing an instrument is another excellent way to earn some surprisingly good money. If you are a good singer and can play an instrument, you can always play in the city center or other popular spots. Many great talents have been discovered performing in public this way. You can also offer your skills to local restaurants or lounges if they are in need of live music or other entertainment.

5. Haircuts for Tips

If you know how to cut hair, another great way to earn money is to offer free haircuts and keep profits from their tips if they decide to give you one. You only need hair clippers for this one, so you can be flexible and earn well in countries where haircuts are expensive. Pro tip : You can combine this with vlogging and use this as your content on your vlog to increase exposure.

6. Exposure for Businesses

This travel job is for those with a well-developed online business. If you already have a travel blog , you can always ask restaurant owners, bar owners, hotels, and others who provide services in tourism if they would like to collaborate on a promotion on your website. The business will get exposure to your audience, and you can negotiate payment or exchanges for that promotion, like a one-night hotel stay or a free meal.

7. Bartending

A good barista is always a much-needed part of the crew. If you know how to mix drinks or make a killer espresso, you can always offer your services to nightclubs or cafes and earn a decent wage, plus tips.

8. Temporary Tattoos or Hair Styling

Unlike the classic tattoo industry, where laws and regulations can tie up employment approval, temporary tattoos can be done anytime, anywhere, and do not fall under any laws and regulations. There is a low risk of infection with temporary tattoos or paints, unlike classic tattoos that are created by piercing the skin. Hair braiding or wrapping is popular at beach destinations and can also be done anytime, anywhere.

Working on a cruise ship is more permanent, but it still fits within the scope of travel jobs. There are numerous jobs that you can do on a cruise ship, and each of those offers some nice wages. Understandably, a captain makes much more than a cabin steward, but all employees receive benefits and gratuity. You can use the time between shifts to discover beautiful cities wherever you stop.

Job Summary:

The Export Control Office and Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison was established to ensure compliance with United States export control laws. Export control laws can apply to many activities incidental to the education and research missions at UW-Madison. These activities include research with proprietary industry technology, international shipments of advanced scientific equipment and biological materials, participating in international research collaborations, space-related research, international travel, and use of computer software with encryption features. The Export Control Manager will assist the Director of Research Security Program in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research in ensuring that research and services completed at the UW-Madison are conducted in a manner compliant with federal export control regulations, including the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).

Responsibilities:

• 5% Develops and maintains institutional and operating policies and procedures to ensure compliance
• 10% Directs operational activities and staffing resources for compliance implementation, including outreach, support, and/or investigations
• 10% Oversees, develops and participates in activities designed to raise awareness of the law(s) and its purpose
• 5% Provides consultation for resolution of policy violations that involve students, employees, visitors, guests of the institution and/or applicants
• 40% Serves as a subject matter expert for affiliated matters for internal and external stakeholders
• 30% Provides guidance and oversight to university personnel compliance, policies, and procedures

After swearing off working in travel, Intrepid helped Selcuk Baki find his fire again  

As a literature major, Selcuk pictured a life with rhyming couplets and free verse. However, his path shifted when he landed a job in travel. Though it had its adventures, the industry also brought many lows, ultimately leading Selcuk to quit and seek a fresh start – and maybe even find some poetic justice.  

Selcuk’s grew up in the city of Istanbul, Turkey , where he spent the first 24 years of his life. He pursued a degree in French literature at university, envisioning a future steeped in poetry. However, life had different plans for him. During his university years, he took on a job as a welcome greeter at the airport, where he was responsible for helping customers to and from their hotels. This role marked the beginning of an unexpected foray into the travel industry. 

His knack with visitors and dedication soon led to a shift in responsibilities, and he transitioned into an operations role within the same company in Istanbul. A year later, his career took a significant turn when he was relocated to Dubai in late 2010 to meet the company’s growing needs. In 2013, a promising job opportunity in Spain presented itself, but the company went bankrupt shortly after, forcing him to return to Dubai. In 2016, Selcuk took a bold step by returning to Spain and co-founded a business with two colleagues. However, this venture ended when his partners ousted him from the company. 

This series of unfortunate events was a challenging time for Selcuk, leaving him both angry and upset. Determined to rebuild from scratch, he took out a loan in 2018 and established his own company in Barcelona. Unfortunately, the onset of the pandemic in 2020 dealt a severe blow to his business. Despite waiting for six months and experimenting with online tours, Selcuk packed it all in. He decided it was time to return to his roots in Turkey and reconsider his career path, vowing never to work in tourism again. 

What happened once you got back to Turkey?   

For six months, I barely left my room.  

Eventually, a close friend came to me and said, ‘Look, you have studied French literature. You have started your own company. From zero. You moved to Dubai, Spain, Latvia, and many other countries, and in each country, you were successful. Nobody knew that the pandemic was coming. It affected even the biggest companies. So, it’s not your fault, and you only need to see what you have done so far. You’ll be doing better than this in the near future.’ 

I told myself I had managed many difficult situations. It was time to recover and learn new things. So, I started learning mobile app development and eventually got involved in a Google project.

So, during that difficult time, you were able to learn a new skill and get a job with Google.   

Yes, I feel proud. It was a one-time project. They were looking for people who spoke English and understood the project. There were so many applicants. During the interview, I told them my story and said I wasn’t expecting any income. I wanted the experience and to be part of the project. I told them that even if they hired someone else, I would assist that person for free.  

They told me I wasn’t qualified for the job, but there were six months until the project began, and they offered me some free courses that would help me prepare for the role. After which, I would take a test. So I spent another six months studying, and I passed and got the job. It was only for two months, but they were really happy with me and asked me to stay as a mentor for new students.  

What encouraged you to be so open and truthful in your interview?   

It’s always been like that for me. Even with Intrepid. I was so open during my interview. I said, look, I don’t want to work in tourism and I don’t even know why I applied for this job. 

The last time I felt this kind of fire was when I was starting my own business in Barcelona after my partners kicked me out of the company and I wanted to fight for myself.  

After swearing off the travel industry, why did you apply for the job at Intrepid?  

Intrepid saw my application and asked me to come for an interview and I needed a proper job. I was honest; I explained I didn’t know if I would stick around for long, but I wanted to try. After the Intrepid leader training, I felt that fire for tourism again. I felt enthusiasm again.  

What was it about that experience that sparked your passion again?   

I’ve been in the industry for 15 years, and before the leader training, I thought to myself, what can they teach me? I realised that there were many details that I didn’t know. I was impressed by Intrepid’s ethical values and attention to misconduct, health and safety and policies. I wanted to learn more. The last time I felt this kind of fire was when I was starting my own business in Barcelona after my partners kicked me out of the company and I wanted to fight for myself.  

After all the setbacks in the travel industry, how has being back in it again been for you?   

There’s more joy. I’m trying to learn new things, and when I’m in new destinations, I find myself saying, this place is good for our trips. Before I started working at Intrepid, I would see nice places, but I wouldn’t go any deeper into it. Working at Intrepid has helped me to experience my surroundings more. 

You had a good friend come through for you when you needed it. How do you feel about that experience now?   

If I hadn’t gone to that interview with Intrepid, I wouldn’t have realised I still have a fire for the travel industry.

I tell myself that everybody has dark moments, of course, but I can still fix things or find a way out. Steve Jobs gave a speech at a university, saying that life is about connecting the dots backwards.  

In my case, if my partners hadn’t kicked me out of my company, I wouldn’t have started my own company. If the pandemic hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t have come to Turkey and started from zero. If I hadn’t studied app development, I wouldn’t have refreshed my mind.  

If I hadn’t gone to that interview with Intrepid, I wouldn’t have realised I still have a fire for the travel industry. In that moment, you don’t realise the experience is a dot that will create another connection, but when I look back, I’m able to make those connections, and it makes me happy.

Marijuana conviction in Maryland? Maybe there's a job for you

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Maryland wants to help people once convicted of marijuana-related offenses land jobs in the state's legal cannabis industry.

Gov. Wes Moore announced the new workforce development program on Thursday. Last week, he signed an executive order pardoning people for more than 175,000 misdemeanor cannabis charges, affecting tens of thousands of individuals.

People interested in the new program will have the option of taking eight instructor-led, self-paced courses taught by industry experts, licensed operators and college professors. After completing 100 hours of virtual coursework, participants may enroll in a two-day, in-person course for 16 hours of hands-on occupational training. The in-person sessions will be offered once a month beginning in November at locations across the state, but none of the training will be be mandatory.

The Cannabis Workforce Development Program will be free to eligible applicants as Maryland seeks to reduce barriers to employment in the marijuana industry. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis starting July 1.

“Through this program, individuals adversely impacted by cannabis criminalization will be able to receive real-time, hands-on experience and access to job placement,” said Will Tilburg, director of the Maryland Cannabis Administration.

Maryland legalized recreational marijuana last year after voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment in 2022. The state decriminalized possessing small amounts of cannabis on Jan. 1, 2023. In all, 24 states and the District of Columbia have legalized recreational cannabis.

“This groundbreaking collaboration will support Marylanders interested in joining the state’s growing cannabis industry and prioritize individuals and communities directly impacted by the War on Drugs,” Moore said in a statement.
