15 Best Things to Do in Batam (Indonesia)

Batam is just across the water from Singapore, so if you are looking for a weekend break to Indonesia then this is a great place to come. From Singapore it is a 40 minute ride to Batam on a speed boat and once you are there you can enjoy a huge range of activities far more cheaply than in many other parts of Southeast Asia.

The island is famous as a place where people come to relax and get away from it all and as such it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Indonesia. You won’t find a huge array of ‘attractions’ like historical sites as such, but you will find a number of resorts, spas, restaurants and cafes, and the nightlife here is lively with a good range of choices if you are looking for some entertainment in the evenings.

Another reason why people flock to Batam is for the diving or snorkeling opportunities as the waters here are incredibly clear and visibility is excellent if you want to explore the underwater kingdoms in this part of Indonesia.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Batam :

1. Enjoy the water sports

Batam Cable Ski Park

One of the signature attractions in Batam is the water sports as it is located right next to the water.

In other places like Singapore the coast of water skiing or wakeboarding can really add up but in Batam you can enjoy these for a fraction of the price and one of the best places to do this is at the Batam Cable Ski Park.

Just some of the activities on offer here include canoeing, jet skiing, or even snorkeling or you can check out other famous resorts like the Batam View Beach Resort.

2. Visit Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Temple

Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Temple

This temple is one of the more serene ways to enjoy Batam and is the place to come if you want to find some inner peace.

Devotees here usually burn incense for good luck and you can enjoy the colorful and elegant Buddha statues here as well as the carvings of twelve zodiac signs which lie opposite the temple.

One of the best things about the temple is that there is also a cafe here and you buy a range of delicious vegetarian food including buns and snacks in the shape of cute animals.

3. Take a trip to Penyengat Island

Penyengat Island

There are a number of islands around central Batam Island that are perfect for day trips and one of these is the stunning Penyengat Island.

It is not one of the largest islands in the area and you can walk around it in around two hours which means that if you get here early you can go for a walk before spending the afternoon sunbathing and then catch the spectacular sunset.

One point of interest on the island is the local mosque called Masjid Kuning (Yellow Mosque) and legend has it that eggshells were used in its construction to make the walls stronger.

The island is also a great place if you want to get a glimpse of how locals live in the less touristy parts of Batam.

4. Dine on seafood

Batam Seafood

Batam is also known for its seafood which again is far cheaper than Singapore or other parts of Southeast Asia.

Some of the top picks for seafood in the city include the Sei Enam Seafood Restaurant as well as the Rezeki Seafood Restaurant and Harbour Bay Seafood.

If you are looking for signature dishes then try the chili crab which is famous in the region as well as black pepper crab and snacks like crunchy calamari.

Other underwater delights about here such as juicy prawns and even dine on freshly caught lobster which is usually simply grilled and served with white rice.

5. Travel along the northern coast

Duriankang Reservoir

Many people come to Batam and only check out the main tourist areas or take a boat to some of the neighboring islands.

If you want to explore a little further however then consider a trip along the northern coastline.

One of the best ways to do this is to hire a motorbike or a bicycle and drive past gorgeous lush jungles with sweeping vistas over the water on the other side of the trail.

The trail will take you along the Duriankang Reservoir and then along the pretty Nongsa Coast and if you choose to ride a bike then you can expect around a 30 kilometer ride from Nongsa Village to the end of the line.

6. Sunbathe on Nongsa Beach

Nongsa Beach

Nongsa Beach is one of the best places to come if you are in Batam and looking for some sand.

The beach has a relaxed atmosphere and is less crowded than some other places on the island.

It is also close to a range of amenities and you will find an array of eateries lining the beach that are a great spot if you fancy a spot of dinner or a drink while watching the sunset.

There are also some spas nearby and you can go for a paddle or a swim.

7. Watch the sunset at Barelang Bridge

Barelang Bridge

Barelang Bridge is one of the most iconic sights in Batam and people flock here in the late afternoon for the photo opportunities.

The bridge actually links main Batam Island with adjacent Galang Island and the bridge is a marvel of engineering as it majestically spans the water between these two islands.

If possible try to go around sunset for the best vistas across the water.

8. Have a massage

Massage

One of the reasons that people come to Batam is for rest and relaxation and as a result there are a wealth of spas here where you can soak up the atmosphere and enjoy a range of soothing treatments.

One of the most famous places to get a treatment is the Isabella Massage House although there are a huge range to choose from scattered across the city which will mean that wherever you go you will leave rejuvenated and relaxed.

9. Go scuba diving

Scuba Diving

If you are a diving newbie and want to get certified then Batam Island is the perfect spot to get your PADI certificate cheaply.

Some of the best places to dive here are located offshore from the main Batam Island and include Abang Island, Hantu Island, Labun Island, and Petong Island.

From Batam you can sign up for a course and will be taken out to the neighboring islands in a boat and the visibility here is amazingly clear so you will be able to take in a range of underwater creatures and this is a top spot if you like marine photography.

If you are already an experienced diver then you will also find a lot to enjoy here thanks to the huge selection of aquatic life in these waters such as sharks, rays, and turtles.

10. Play a round of golf

Batam Hills Golf Resort

Batam is a golfer’s paradise and you can enjoy not one but seven different ranges in and around the area.

These include the Batam Hills Golf Resort and the Palm Springs Golf and Beach Resort or you can go to the Padang Golf Sukajadi which is the most famous of all the courses here.

As well as enjoying a game of golf all the courses have bars and eateries attached so you can also get a bite to eat or enjoy a sundowner as you look over the idyllic rambling dunes.

11. Take a trip to Bintan Island

Bintan Island

Bintan Island lies close to Batam and is known for being a luxury retreat with a wealth of delightful high end resorts to choose from.

If you are not on a budget then you can think about staying overnight or you can just take a day trip to Bintan and enjoy the pristine white sands and the azure waters.

Bintan is slightly less busy than Batam and most people come here to chill out at one of the resident resorts on the island, so if you are looking to get away from the crowds then this is a good choice.

12. Check out the stilt houses in Tanjung Uma

Tanjung Uma

Many parts of Batam are incredibly modern but if you go out to the old villages then there are a wealth of historical relics to enjoy.

These include the stilt houses which are built over the water and this is an amazing sight if you have never seen traditional architecture like this before.

One of the best places to see these old fashioned stilt houses is in the sleepy fishing village of Tanjung Uma so if you are interested in local architecture and culture then this is not to be missed and shows a completely different side of this island.

13. Have fun at Ocarina Park

Ocarina Park Batam

Ocarina Park is a great place to come with all the family and is a large entertainment complex which also includes the Ocarina Waterpark.

The park ahs a range of signature features including a large Ferris wheel and you will find a range of rides for children of all ages as well as adults.

There is also a 3D movie theater inside the park and you will also find a number of food courts where you can get a bite to eat.

Certainly if you are looking for a place with a range of attractions all in one place then this is a great choice.

14. Enjoy the nightlife

Batam Nightlife

Batam is well known for having cheap alcohol particularly compared to neighboring Singapore.

It is also one of the liveliest parts of Indonesia if you are looking for an exciting nightlife scene.

The main area for bars and clubs is known as the Nagoya Entertainment District or just ‘NED’ and you can easily spend a night on the town here enjoying the local Indonesian beer Bintang or having a cocktail.

Venues range from low-key lounges where you can get a drink before dinner to larger nightclubs where you can dance the night away into the wee small hours.

15. Go shopping at Nagoya Hill Shopping Mall

Nagoya Hill Shopping Mall

Batam is an island but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have a wealth of shopping malls to visit and actually shopping is the number one pastime for many visitors here.

The Nagoya Hill Shopping Mall has the claim to fame of being the biggest mall in the city and you will find a full range of items here such as branded clothes and accessories.

Other malls include Mega Mall Batam Center and BCS Mall.

Lots of malls also sell a wealth of typical handicrafts such as wood carvings and textiles so if you are looking to pick up some gifts or souvenirs then you can do all your shopping under one roof.

Perfect Batam Travel Guide 2024

Batam Travel Guide : I’ve lived in Batam for almost 8 years and I still visit the place from time to time (to visit my family). The tropical group of islands is about 20 kilometers from Singapore.

Today Batam is an industrial and is popular amongst Singapore’s locals for weekend getaways. Like Bali and most Indonesian tourist islands, people visit Batam for its beaches, resorts, spas, and variety of seafood cuisines !

Bintan and Batam Riau happen to be the two closest Indonesian spots to Singapore making for a budget visit to get a feel of Indonesia. Even for foreign travelers, I recommend visiting Batam or Bintan if you’re looking for a short detour.

Visit Batam for a couple of days for an exotic getaway, for a taste of the crisp air by the beaches.

This post covers everything you need to know about visiting the Riau Islands. Here is my Batam Travel Guide!

Table of Contents

Best Things to Do in Batam

I’ll make sure not to overflow this list with the itsy bitsy things you can get out. Let’s get to things Batam is particularly famous for.

There are a handful of places to visit – most come here for Indonesian restaurants, shopping, beaches, resorts, and experiences like Snorkeling. 3 days should be sufficient to get around Batam Riau – but feel free to stay longer :)

Here’s the list of Things to do in Batam Riau:

  • Visit the Bareland Bridge
  • Go crazy with watersport activities

Snorkel at Abang Island

  • Visit the Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Monastery
  • Try Nasi Padang, Sate (BBQ), and Mie Goreng
  • Eat Seafood at Golden Prawn and Wey Wey Seafood Restaurant

Check out the Vietnamese Camp

  • Get a massage/spa!
  • Go shopping at Batam’s numerous malls
  • Cafes, bars, and live music
  • Relax at Nongsa Point, KTM Resorts, and/or Kiki Beach

Visit the Barelang Bridge

The first must-visit place is the Barelang Bridge in Batam. There’s no way this Batam travel guide is complete without it. This bridge is one of the most scenic views and marks the beginning of the 7 bridges connecting the islands of Galang and Rempang .

Avoid visiting on the weekend and late evenings . The evenings are crowded here making up for a lot of traffic jams.

Corn and coconut by the bridge : Right after the bridge is a bunch of street stalls serving hot corn and coconut water. The grilled corn is a must-try here. The place gets pretty smoky and the varieties of grilled corn flavors are something to look forward to.

I recommend trying the chili for those who can handle the spice!

The locals here are friendly. It’s best to learn some basic Indonesian phrases to help yourself communicate here. Here’s a list I created of basic local phrases for travelers !

barelang bridge batam guide

Go Crazy with Watersports

To the adventure junkies out there, watersports in Batam are cheap . I’ve seen Jet Ski and Banana boat prices sky-high in Singapore and Bali. Here, it’s relatively cheaper.

Make sure to plan as watersport activities are spread across the island. It takes time to get there so search up a bit on the activities you’re looking for.

Well-known spots for watersports in Batam are Harris Resort (Sekupang), Batam View Beach Resorts (Nongsa), Turi Beach Resorts (Nongsa), and KTM Resort (Sekupang). For specific watersports like Cable Skiing – Waterfront City in Sekupang is a great option.

Note: For snorkeling, keep reading ahead – there’s a special for it in Batam :)

I highly recommend this when visiting Batam! This is an itinerary trip hosted by the locals of Abang Island in the Galang District. This is a fishing village on the Pulau Pengapalap and the only way to get here is via a tiny boat called Bot Pompong.

Snorkeling here is such an offbeat experience (links to post on Bintan) that no amount of money can buy. With the corals and the variety of fishes right under your nose, the clear waters are something of the world.

It’s usually a 1-day or 2-day trip to Abang Island where you stay at their local guest houses and they provide meals. The snorkeling begins early in the morning at the nearby islands – Pulau Abang and Petong Islands.

I’ve visited the place and remember my trip vividly. The best part is the local experience of staying with the locals for an evening. Read my personal Abang Island experience here.

Don’t miss a Massage!

How can you miss a massage in Indonesia? The moment you step down from immigration in Harborfront Singapore, you’re bound to see posts of spa spots in Batam. One of the main reasons is spas are expensive elsewhere.

What costs around SGD 60 for a 1-hour spa in Singapore, costs SGD 20 – 40 here. Some great places are IndoThai SPA, Sakura SPA, ESKA Group Aesthetic, and MediSpa.

The best way to window shop around spas in Batam is at Nagoya. Get to Jalan Nagoya Hill Mall and take a stroll around the loop of spas, restaurants, and bars.

As promised, here are some amazing spa spots for pretty decent rates. Book your slot today!

Visit the Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Temple

This is one of the few Buddhist temples in Batam, making up for a picturesque spot with gigantic Buddha statues everywhere. No matter how noisy it gets outside, the insides of the temple are always calm.

I recommend trying the food here at the temple’s end for a touch of vegetarian dishes!

maha vihara duta maitreya, batam buddhist temple

Try Nasi Padang, Satay (BBQ), and Mie Goreng

Nasi Padang is the first thing you must know about Indonesian food. If you know well enough, you might land an Indonesian citizenship! Don’t take me seriously now.

Anyway, Nasi Padang isn’t a specific dish: As tradition goes, it’s steamed rice served with pre-cooked sides of your choice. You’ll know the place when you see a pretty arrangement of white plates with different aromas from them.

These Padang spots make up the majority of food courts and restaurants like most parts of Indonesia. But to recommend, some places to check out are RM Sederhana, Ayam Bakar Taliwang (known for their special sambal or chili sauce), and Rumah Makan Ranah Padang.

Satay (or Sate as they pronounce it) is another Indonesian dish where meat is grilled, seasoned, and served with spicy sauce. The meat is cut into tiny pieces and served on sticks. There are many places in Batam for trying out the Satay.

Last but not least, is noodles – Bakso or Mie Goreng (fried noodles with vegetables and sides of your preference). You get these as instant noodles (Indomie) from any supermarket but the stall sheds are something else :)

Eat Seafood at Golden Prawn and Love Seafood Restaurant

I daresay Seafood is reasonable in Batam – it’s comparatively cheaper than most tourism hotspots in Indonesia for the same variety and delicacies. Some even let you choose your crabs!

Back then, Golden Prawn 933 Bengkong by the shores was the most authentic seafood place in Batam and still is among the prominent ones. But many have paced up with tourism – some of them being Love Seafood Tanjung Piayu, Citi Rasa seafood in Galang, Sei Enam, and of course – Barelang Seafood .

However, here’s a detailed piece on all the seafood places in Batam .

Take a drive around the Vietnamese camp in the Galang district . Fun fact: During the Vietnam civil war in 1975, people fled by boat to Southeast Asia. And Galang was one of the places they took refuge in!

Some made it, many died. But for those who survived, Indonesia recognized and created a refugee camp. While no one resides here anymore, the buildings and the camp are a tourism hotspot.

The entry fee is negligible (around IDR 35,000) and it’s worth the visit.

The UN recognized and referred Galang to as the Vietnam Village. If you take a drive around the camp today, the area is lush with its forests but you’ll find the buildings, hospitals, and cemeteries that date back to the functioning periods of the camp.

Relax at Nongsa Point, KTM Resorts, Kiki Beach

Then come the resorts… Batam’s got plenty! There are numerous skyscrapers for hotels, if you’re going to relax, I recommend picking a resort by the beach – private chalets overlooking the beach. Some all-time great ones are Nongsa Point Marina Resort, Harris Resorts, KTM Resorts, and Turi Beach.

The newest addition is the Kiki Beach Resort . I recently visited the place and it was amazing!

Here are a few resorts I picked that are best known for their comfort and reasonable rates. Being a partner of Klook.com, our readers get better deals so hurry and grab your Batam stay!

kiki resort batam, resorts in batam

Anyway, for budget travel, there are tons of options too. Fun fact, it costs only between SGD 6 – 10 for budget accommodation by Oyo or RedDoorz. Of course, nothing fancy like the resorts – but it’s great for backpackers!

Here’s another resort I checked out in Batam.

Go shopping, clubbing, and live music

Apart from the resort, the water activities, and snorkeling, what’s left out is shopping! You get quality services here at cheap rates. I’ve heard people come here from Singapore to get their laundry done!

Keep a day for shopping in Batam. Some popular malls are Mega Mall, Grand Batam, Nagoya, Batam City Square (popularly called BCS), and Batam One. Oh, and check out the food court at Batam One (I recently visited and loved the Ayam bakar at one of the stalls).

Pubs and live music . Though most locals don’t speak English, you’ll hear them sing English perfectly at live music avenues! Ask them if they know English and they’ll say ‘No I’ve just learned the song!’

Some notable places in Batam for bars are Fresh Beer , Arch Alley Grill, and BlueFire RestoBar (I’ve been to all three of these). Arch Alley Grill and BlueFire are new but FreshBeer with their own brewery is quite a different experience.

That finishes all the things to do in this Batam travel guide . But keep reading for insider tips – it’ll come in handy!

Batam Travel Guide: How to Get to Batam?

Batam is well-versed with its domestic flights and water routes. However, there are only a handful of international flights to Batam. From Singapore, the easiest (and cheapest) way is via ferry from Harborfront or Tanah Merah. From other parts of Indonesia, domestic flights are preferable.

From Singapore and Malaysia, the cheapest option is via ferry. From Singapore, the only ferry ports are Harbourfront (near the cruise point) and Tanah Merah. Get to Batam via the Batam Center ferry terminal, Harbor Bay, Sekupang, Marina Waterfront, or Nongsapura.

Harborfront Center, Singapore is a much larger port than Tanah Mera. Since these are the only few ports, there are a few ferries to choose from. Some are SindoFerry , BatamFast , WaveMaster , HorizonFerry , and Majestic . Different ferries have their schedule and most depart around hourly intervals.

how to get to batam, batam ferry from singapore

While it cost lesser before the pandemic, it currently costs around SGD 70-80 for a 2-way trip with BatamFast. Check and compare all the mentioned ferry official sites for your preferred timings, pricing, and departure and arrival ports.

For Malaysia, the only available ferry is the Pintas Samudra from Stulang Laut, Johor Bahru.

The Hang Nadim International Airport in Batam is the only city’s airport with a couple of international flights (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Saudi Arabia). There are, otherwise, domestic flights from different parts of Indonesia like Jakarta, Bandar Lampung, Jambi City, and Medan.

With water routes too long for different parts of the country, domestic flights are the only option for traveling. Garuda Indonesia, Citilink, Lion Air, and Wings Air are popular flights.

For people traveling from Singapore (if the ferry isn’t available, flying is always an option):

  • Fly straight to Jakarta or take a connecting flight from Singapore via Changi Airport.
  • Take a flight from Jakarta to Hang Nadim Airport, Batam.

Batam Travel Guide: Things to know before you visit Batam

Before you pack your bags and this Batam travel guide , there are some things to know beforehand. Especially to travelers foreign to visiting Indonesia, knowing these things shall let you know what to expect here.

Best time to Visit Batam

All-time of the year! The seasons don’t change a lot in Batam. Located on the equator line and close to the sea, it’s very humid. It’s hot most of the time. When it rains, it rains cats and dogs!

But try NOT to visit on weekends. The last time I traveled from Batam to Singapore, I thought the Ferry terminal was an entry to a concert show- it took half an hour to queue to enter the departure lounge on a Sunday evening!

The only thing to consider while planning your vacation is the peak times. Singaporeans, being an hour away, love to spend their holidays here by the beach. Prices of stays also go up during peak times.

Most Locals Don’t Speak English

senggarang island

Learn some Indonesian language basics when going out to restaurants all by yourself. Most locals don’t speak English in Indonesia. With the booming tourism, you can find guides to help you out – but it’s still a deal-breaker.

Communication shouldn’t be a problem in resorts. But when in malls, local shops, restaurants, and cabs, it’s challenging. Learn some basic Indonesian phrases. Here’s a list of phrases I made to help you out!

It’s hard to Get Vegetarian Food

Being a vegan or vegetarian in Batam is hard. The traditional local delicacies here like the  Nasi Padang comprise chicken and fish as their prime ingredients. It’s difficult to get vegetarian food in most Indonesian Cuisines. At least the curry that you eat along with rice would be of chicken flavor.

While I’ve no issues being a non-vegetarian myself, my mom finds it difficult to eat outside. We get groceries from Singapore to make many Indian dishes at home. Luckily, there are many Indian restaurants (and other cuisines) here for vegetarian food. Some of the popular ones are Maharaja Restaurant and Taj.

People are hospitable here

Comparing most places I’ve been to, people here are kind regardless of whether you know Bahasa Indonesia or not. Go walking and strangers will smile and bow at you as a greeting. Feel free to smile back and say hi!

Download Grab or Gojek

Local taxis get expensive and public transport isn’t very reliable in Batam. While taxis had a monopoly on their pricing before, making their rates, Grab and Gojek, similar to Uber, have made it reasonable for transport. Download either of the apps or both for transportation.

Also, consider renting a car/van in Batam – it’s a cheaper option with reasonable fuel prices compared to taking cabs to all places.

vietnam camp cars

Payment in Indonesian currency

It’s confusing to people whenever I explain Indonesian currency to them, so I decided to add it to this Batam travel guide. The Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) always has more zeroes than one expects.

It’s a little tricky, but you’ll get used to it. 10,000 IDR equals SGD 1 (or USD 0.71). There are 1000 rupiah coins and the max currency note goes up to 100, 000 IDR. Thus, the last three digits in the Indonesian Rupiah are similar to the cents in a dollar. It costs around 5000 – 10,000 IDR to purchase a cheap pen here. So it’s pretty much of the same value as most Southeast Asian countries.

Regarding payment methods, cash, and cards are prominent for everyday transactions. Payment apps, like GoPay, are still emerging and are best for paying for your Gojek rides. As for cards, Visa and MasterCards (Maestro) are widely accepted in Indonesia. Citibank and HSBC offer great foreign exchange rates for ATM withdrawal services.

Batam Suggested Budgets

Accommodation : For budget stays, it costs anywhere between SGD 6 – 12 (IDR 60,000 – 120,000). Look for reasonable stays between this price range and check up on the whole place before paying. Stays by Oyo and RedDoorz have great value for money for private budget rooms. Some trusted sites to book from are Agoda and Booking.com.

Food : Expect to spend between IDR 25,000 – 50,000 per meal. While the local Indonesian food like Ayam Penyet and Kosong Parata costs less. Seafood that shouldn’t be missed out costs higher. But overall, it’s much cheaper than Singapore. IDR 100,000 -150,000 on food per day (SGD 10 – 15) is a reasonable budget.

Transport : This is the tough part to figure out. For solo travelers with just a backpack, I recommend using Gojek or Grab Bike (or the local Ojeks by the road). The apps give better rates than local ojeks , but not all places might have availability. Since most people visit in groups, there are plenty of rental car services with Avanza and Agya being some popular options.

perfect batam travel guide

The budget options cost anywhere between IDR 250,000 – 300,000 per day (SGD 25 – 30) depending on the service, car type, and availability. Make sure to book them early. If not, the last resort is the mass transport options such as Carry and Bimbar. Read more on getting around Batam here .

What to Pack for Batam

For Batam, and most parts of Indonesia, it’s best to keep your clothing light – shorts, sandals, flip-flops, and hats should be on your mind when visiting Batam. But to name a few, here are some things to pack for Batam, Riau Islands:

  • Light clothes and swimwear
  • Flip-flops and Sandals (Shoes and socks only if you’re particular about attires, and trek shoes for some trekking here)
  • Sunglasses and sunhats
  • Headcaps and sun lotions
  • Backpack, of course

batam travel guide, things to do in batam

Indonesia, being a tropical country, there aren’t many essentials to carry around. Keep your clothing light based on the length of your stay. Keep fewer clothes in case you’re planning on shopping in Batam.

A good pair of shoes and sunglasses will do. But wear a head cap when you go out , the heat is unbearable sometimes. To those with skin issues, bring sunscreen lotion.

Being a duty-free zone, shopping in Batam is appealing. Nagoya Hill Shopping Mall is one of the largest on the island. For those seeking activity and adventure, there’s plenty of snorkelling, diving, golfing and hiking.

This Chinese temple is one of the oldest and most revered spiritual sites in the city. It is dedicated to the deity Tua Pek Kong, who is said to protect sailors and fishermen. His statue is inside the main prayer hall.

The temple's architecture is a mix of Chinese and local Indonesian styles, and features colourful embellishments and intricate carvings. The temple is particularly popular during the Chinese New Year, when it hosts various events and celebrations.

#3 Barelang Bridge

The Barelang Bridge is a chain of six bridges connecting Batam, Rempang, and Galang. Each of the six has a unique design and spans different parts of the strait; the name "Barelang" is derived from the names of the three islands.

The Bareling Bridge has become a popular tourist attraction in Batam, with many visitors coming to admire the views of the strait and the surrounding islands.

#4 Nongsa Beach

Car rental is a popular option for those who prefer to drive themselves and explore the island at their own pace. Several car rental companies are available in Batam, and it is recommended to book in advance.

The number of days needed to explore Batam depends on your travel plans and interests. If you are interested in experiencing the island's beaches, water sports, and outdoor activities, a 2-3 day trip to Batam would be sufficient.

Batam is a small but busy island in the Riau Islands in Indonesia that is 45 km by 25 km, and has nearly a million people, hundreds of factories owned by multinationals, towns, shopping centres. Only 30 minutes by ferry from Singapore , it is a gateway to the other Riau Islands.

Located only 20 km from Singapore and 25 km from Johor in Malaysia , Batam is Indonesia's equivalent to China's SEZs (Special Economic Zones) - a place where the nation's economic planners test new economic policies and ideas. The island is an industrial hub with electronics factories, a large and growing ship repair industry and an even larger oil service sector. Quite a few expats head there for work, and pubs and golf courses have sprung up to serve them.

Most tourists, on the other hand, come from nearby Singapore . While there is a smattering of family resorts, Bintan is more popular for this; instead, the main lure on Batam is the naughty nightlife . However, the new governor of the province has shut down the casinos and taken steps to curb prostitution, and the goings-on aren't quite as in your face as they used to be.

Indonesian ( Bahasa Indonesia ) is modeled on the version of Malay which originates from Riau on the Sumatra mainland and the Riau Islands . In fact, Riau Malay is regarded as quite similar to the Malay language and visitors from Malaysia will find the Indonesian spoken here very similar to the historical Bahasa Malaysia, which is the version of Malay spoken back home.

Batam also has a large population of ethnic Chinese Indonesians, who also can speak Hokkien (Fujian), Teochew and Mandarin. There are also many migrants from various parts of Indonesia who speak many different Indonesian languages.

All Batam ports, namely Harbour Bay (Jodoh), Batam Centre, Nongsapura, Sekupang and Waterfront City (Teluk Senimba) are visa-free and visa-on-arrival ports of entry. For detailed information on visas, please refer to the Indonesia page.

As often in Indonesia there is a first security check for entering the terminal, which implies some queuing. Batam airport has only toilets, ATM, money exchange and a few overpriced souvenir shops.

For most foreign visitors though, the most practical way of getting to Batam will be to fly into Singapore ( SIN  IATA ) and catch a ferry from there. There is a shuttle service connecting Changi Airport with Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal, taking about 20 minutes. If you want to catch flights from Singapore 's Changi Airport , you must be on a ferry to Singapore's Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal at least three hours before departure time. Batam is one hour behind Singapore, so keep that in mind when planning your schedule. See "By boat" section below for details.

The main ports on Batam are Harbour Bay, Batam Center , Sekupang , Waterfront City , Nongsapura and Telaga Punggur. The main city of Nagoya is now served by Harbour Bay (Jodoh), replacing the old Batu Ampar ferry terminal.

Harbour Bay terminal has the fastest voyage time, 45 minutes away from Singapore HarbourFront Centre and Nagoya City Center is 10 minutes drive away. It also serves domestic ferry service to Riau island and Stulang Laut and Puteri Harbour Malaysia Johor.

Batam Centre Ferry Terminal has ferry connections from Singapore and Johor Bahru . Sekupang, with ferries from Singapore is best used for those catching domestic connections to the Sumatra mainland and the Karimun Islands. Waterfront City and Nongsapura mostly serve adjacent resorts while Telaga Punggur is the main ferry terminal for boats to and from Bintan .

  • Baruna ( ☏ +62-778-479162 in Telaga Punggur; ☏ +62-771-28578 in Tanjung Pinang) and Sentosa operate speedboats between Telaga Punggur and Bintan 's main town Tanjung Pinang virtually every 15 minutes during daylight hours. Tickets cost Rp25,000 - 40,000 excluding port taxes (Rp5,000).
  • Frequent speedboats also run between Telaga Punggur and Tanjung Uban on the western part of Bintan .
  • Getting there/away: Official taxis from Batam Centre to Telaga Punggur cost Rp65,000. On the reverse way, it's Rp60,000. You can try and bargain for a lower rate with taxis outside the port area (Batam centre to Telaga Punggur may cost Rp50,000). Passenger vans or mikrolet (known as Metro Trans by the locals) run between Telaga Punggur and Jodoh/Nagoya. They will go back & forth to wait until their van is full before they really depart.
  • Boats from Tanjung Pinang also call at Sekupang at the northeastern part of Batam when going to or coming from the Sumatra mainland such as to Dumai and Pekanbaru , as well as Karimun Island. These are however not as frequent as those leaving from Telaga Punggur. To get to Sekupang, please see following section.
  • From Karimun Island: Regular ferries operate between Tanjung Balai on Karimun and Sekupang. Some of the ferries originate from the Sumatra mainland or Kundur Island. Boats also stop at Tanjung Balai when going from Sekupang to Sumatra or Kundur.
  • From Dumai : Several companies, including Dumai Express operates several ferries daily to/from Sekupang. Most of these ferries originate from Tanjung Pinang , the main town on Bintan , and also make a stop at Tanjung Balai on Karimun Island after making a stop at Sekupang.
  • From Kundur Island: Several ferry companies run daily between Sekupang and Tanjung Batu on Kundur. These ferries also make a stop at Tanjung Balai on Karimun en route.
  • Other ferry destinations include Pekanbaru , Selat Panjang, Bengkalis and Tanjung Buton in Riau , and Kuala Tungkal in Jambi province.
  • From other parts of Indonesia: Pelni ships which serve various ports throughout Indonesia call at Sekupang .

There are plenty of taxis in Batam, but there are no standard color schemes: however, licensed taxis have yellow license plates, while unlicensed ones do not (and are best avoided). As there are no meters, you will need to bargain with the drivers; the first price quoted is often silly, but if there are other taxis around, you can easily bargain them down. Sample fares for reference:

  • Telaga Punggur to Batam Centre (Rp112,000, 25 min). As of July 2015, this was a fixed fare. No haggling was undertaken
  • Nagoya to Harbour Bay ferry terminal at Batu Ampar (Rp30,000 fixed price, 8 min)
  • Sekupang to Batam Centre (Rp50,000)
  • Hang Nadim airport to Nagoya /Jodoh (Rp75,000 - fixed price)
  • Batam Centre ferry terminal to Hang Nadim airport: Rp90,000 (fixed price as of 2017)
  • Full-day hire of a taxi Rp500,000 (around S$70)

If you feel more comfortable with metered taxis, there are a few of these taxis attached with it, but please ensure that you asked the driver to operate the meter before getting into the taxi, otherwise they will not operate it and may charge you more than the amount that you are supposed to pay.

By minibus (Metro Trans)

Fixed route plies between Jodoh and Telaga Punggur (Rp3,000-4,000). Sample fares for other destinations are as follows:

  • Jodoh to Sembulang via Sukajadi Rp9,500
  • Jodoh to Galang Baru via Sukajadi Rp12,000
  • Dapur 12 to Mukakuning Rp3,000
  • Dapur 12 to Jodoh via Sukajadi Rp4,000

The Batam local government (known as pemerintah) operates a bus service known as "Bus Pilot Project". The blue colour bus plies between Batam Center and Batu Aji for Rp4,000 and Batam Center to Sekupang Rp4,000. Buy your ticket from the personnel before boarding.

Most hotels run shuttle buses during the day to the ferry ports and to the main shopping mall. It seems that none run a shuttle to airport.

You can hop into a free shuttle bus (yellow in colour) from Megamall Batam Center to the major hotels in Nagoya or Jodoh .

The Kijang, which is generally everywhere in Indonesia, is strangely absent in Batam. Your hotel may be able to arrange a car and driver for you, but be prepared to pay Rp100,000 or more, which is almost double the rate in Jakarta.

The Waterfront City area of Batam is on the western side of the island. There are several attractions & activities available in this area, such as water & sea sports activities, a fishing pond, go-kart racing track, a football field, as well as a beach for swimming or playing with the kids. There is also a cable ski park, Jet Ski, para sailing and banana boats for the adventurous.

Down at the Barelang Islands , connected to Batam by a series of 6 bridges, there are many good beaches, as well as an old Vietnamese refugee camp, that was occupied for 20 years by Vietnamese boat people, and has now been restored as a tourist attraction. The site is quite overgrown in places by the jungle and takes around 1hour to drive to from Batam Centre. However, on entering the site there are several colonies of macaque monkeys by the road side. This is also a favourite route for cyclists.

Mega Wisata Ocarina Batam is a newly developed theme park in Batam Centre . The large ferris wheel and other carnival attractions are fun, there is a water park and 3D movie theater inside, along with several food-court style restaurants. This whole complex has an unfinished air to it and is a work in progress.

  • 1.1418 103.9135 1 Batam Golf ( Golf stay and play packages ), Batam Island ( Via Batam Ferry Terminals ), ☏ +6531080729 . 24/7 . Batam is a golfers paradise. Batam Island is blessed with 7 great golf courses providing top class championship golf and great hospitality. From $85 .

Batam is not generally considered to be good for snorkeling, due to its position in the murky waters of the world's busiest shipping channel, but the small island of Abang to the south gets good reviews - you may need a tour to get there.

The Indonesian rupiah may be legal tender, but the Singapore dollar (S$) is Batam's unofficial second currency. Tourist-oriented hotels, restaurants and shops usually quote prices in S$, and they will be accepted by nearly anybody in a pinch. However, if you decide to pay by credit card, by law your bill must be converted to rupiah first—and the exchange rate is unlikely to be in your favor.

There are many malls in Batam offering a variety of stores and restaurants. Nagoya Hill Mall, in Nagoya, has a Matahari department store, Hypermart supermarket, ACE Hardware, and a Cinema 21. Restaurants include J.Co, KFC, A&W, BFC, Pizza Hut, Ayam Goreng Fatmawati, Solaria, Grandduck Chinese restaurant & newtown coffee at the top of the mall.

BCS Mall in Baloi has a Golden Truly department store, a Gramedia and a bowling alley.

If you would like to bring Indonesian delicacy back for your family, opt for the layer cake ( kek lapis ), which is available in most of the shopping malls and ferry terminals. They are handmade and have become the iconic takeaway delicacy from Batam.

Batam has plenty of eating out choices, including great Chinese seafood in the outdoor food courts, such as the Windsor and Nagoya Food Courts and A1 Pujasera.

Local best valued Indonesian food are Daun Pisang Resto, where travellers can taste mixed of archipelagos food. Another option is Nasi Padang Sederhana; both are widely loved by local and international travellers.

  • For seafood over the water, try Golden Prawn Seafood Restaurant in Bengkong. They are famous for their seafood. This large restaurant which resembles several open air marquees is cheap and cheerful in the furnishings. The chairs and the plates are plastic but the staff are warm and welcoming.
  • Grand Duck Restaurant in Nagoya Hill Mall is a must try.
  • In the Nagoya area behind Harmoni Hotel, there are dozens of bars that serve Western pub food; try the pizza at Wallabie's, about Rp. 80,000 for a large.
  • For authentic Balinese roasted pork, visit Warung Bali in Batam Center. They have fresh babi guling every Saturday after 11:00.
  • All of the major hotels have restaurants, some better than others. If you come during Ramadan (In August–September), you have your choice of all-you-can-eat buffets of traditional Indonesian fare from every major hotel; prices range from about Rp45,000-75,000.

City authorities claim that Batam's tap water is drinkable, but the rusty color puts some people off. It is wise to stick with bottled water anyway, about Rp10,000 for a 5-gallon jug.

Carlsberg and Guinness are produced locally, as well as Bintang and Tiger beer. Most places have Heineken on tap. Imported beers, such as Corona are available, but prices are high. A normal draft beer should be no more than Rp25,000.

Wine and liquor is available from the duty-free stores in nearly all of the larger malls, most bars and hotels.

Batam Fresh Beer is the only microbrewery on the island, headquartered in Batam Center near the large mosque (behind Pondok Gurih restaurant). Price is Rp15,000 a glass for any of their beers (dark and light at 5 or 7% alc or green at 5%).

Much of Batam's accommodation is in Nagoya . There are several resorts in Nongsa .

Upon arrival in the ferry terminal (Harbour Bay or Batam Centre) you can go to the Hotel Reservation Counter, they will have numerous options for the 3+ star hotels in on the island. These may give you a slightly better value than booking directly with the hotel, so it is not a scam. In addition, however, there are budget options available such as family apartments.

Batam is generally safe during the daytime hours, but at night if you are in the entertainment areas of Nagoya you should exercise caution. Do not walk alone at night, if you want to leave somewhere and it is late, find someone else who is leaving or about to leave, or stay until it closes and then all go together. If you really have to get back to your hotel call the hotel and have them send a car to pick you up. As the taxis are not regulated or owned by a central group (like Bluebird in Jakarta) you may not be safe hiring a taxi off the street either. Walking in groups or two or three is probably okay but do not get into discussions with the locals as you may be asking to have your wallet or purse taken from you. If this happens, don't chase, just walk back to where you were or to the hotel and report to the police later.

Traveling safe is another matter. The roads around Batam are OK, but not maintained to the highest standard. The taxi drivers in particular delight in driving as fast as they can and they really like to overtake on a curve or bend. If you feel at all uncomfortable ask the driver to slow down, tell him you are not in a hurry, usually they are OK, although you might have to yell at them in Indonesian a few times to get them to drive safely.

If you have to drink it is always better to do it in your own hotel or a family restaurant-cum-bar. If you go to an ordinary bar, there have been instances where drugs were put in one's bag unknowingly and then locals threaten to call the police unless you pay them.

  • The country code for Indonesia is 62. The area code for Batam is 778. To call Singapore from Wartel phone shop, please dial 007-65 follow by the phone no.
  • The General Post office (known as kantor pos in Bahasa Indonesia) is at Batam Center, not far from the ferry terminal

Batam, with its good ferry connections, is an excellent springboard to the other Riau Islands such as the Tanjung Uban and Kijang Bintan Island and the Sumatra mainland. Good air connections also make Batam a good place to get cheap air tickets to Jakarta and other parts of Indonesia.

3D2N Batam Itinerary : Traveling Indonesia

3D2N Batam Itinerary

It was the time of the year that we wanted to explore a new destination. The beautiful Indonesian island Batam was on top of my travel bucket list. Without thinking further, we decided to visit Batam Island during last June school holidays. With delicious food, excitement, peace and relax, our Batam trip was a memorable holiday which we are full of memorable moments. This is why I want to share our 3D2N Batam Itinerary to help you plan your holiday to this beautiful Indonesian island. This 3D2N Batam itinerary is more suitable for families with young kids as we traveled with the kid.

I want to share this post before I come up with a complete Batam Travel guide. This itinerary will help you to plan your getaway as you can find what you can do in a 3 day 2 nights itinerary with kids.

Batam Island is a quick getaway destination for those who live in Singapore. Good food, shopping and activities to pamper are among the many reasons why people love to visit this beautiful island of Indonesia.

Well, now I am sure you like to read our travel story of visiting Batam. We planned visiting popular attractions of Batam, however with limited time available and as we travelled with our kid we ended up visiting only few places. But we spent time together as a family. So,here is our Batam 3D2N itinerary as a family with a kid.

3D2N Batam Itinerary

Planning our Batam Trip

As it was school holiday time, most of the hotels were fully booked. We found a decent hotel in Nagoya which is considered the main city of Batam. The nearest ferry terminal for Nagoya is Harbour Bay ferry terminal. Therefore we booked our ferry tickets to reach Batam via Harbour Bay ferry terminal.

3D2N Batam Itinerary

Check this post on how we planned our Batam Getaway !

Ah, I forgot to mention. We decided to use a ferry to reach Batam Island. As I mentioned in a post about fear for Traveling , actually I am afraid of sea travel or with anything water. But, I wanted to be brave this time. After all, ferry travel is comfortable and fun as it is a new experience for us. We didn’t face any fear for traveling or any motion sickness or sea sickness during the ferry transfer to Batam.

So, do you like to know our Batam 3D2N itinerary? Here it is. And it is a kid friendly itinerary which we spent more time as a family than visiting many places.

Our 3D2N Batam itinerary

Singapore harbourfront ferry terminal

Our ferry time was scheduled to 9.30am.It was early morning that we reached to Singapore Harbor front ferry terminal. Our ferry from Horizon Fast Ferry was really comfortable and we enjoyed our journey towards Batam Island.

journey with Horizon Fast Ferry

When we arrived at Batam, it took around 1 hour to customs clearance as it was crowded. It was school holiday period which is usually crowded in nearby destinations to Singapore.

3D2N Batam Itinerary

The moment we entered into Batam Island, we were really tired. However there are shops and cafes in the same building where customs offices are located. We found Malaya Café and headed there to have some quick meal before we check in to the hotel.

Malaya Cafe-Batam

After a quick meal, we visited Harbour Bay Mall as it is near to the Harbor Bay ferry terminal. However this shopping Mall looks deserted. Although there are few shops available with cheap rated items, those were not to our desire.

Finally, we decided to reach the hotel.

At the Batam custom office building, it is easy to hire a taxi to the city. There is a taxi counter with fix rates.

We hired a taxi to our Hotel which is in Nagoya and the rate was around SGD 5.

We checked in to Harmoni Hotel Batam . It was a nice spacious hotel which is great for a family holiday.

Harmoni Hotel batam

After spending some time in the hotel, we visited Nagoya Hill shopping mall to see around the main city of Batam.

Nagoya Hill shopping mall is a nice shopping destination in Batam with many items for cheap rates. Compared to Singapore prices, these items are cheap. We bought few items including handbags, clothes and some snacks.

Nagoya hill Shopping Mall

In Nagoya Hill shopping Mall, there is a floor dedicated for food. You can choose delicious food ranging from Indonesian delicacy to other cuisines.

3D2N Batam Itinerary

Anyway we were not hungry as we visited the McDonalds next to the hotel with the kid.Our kid was so happy to encounter the McDonalds outlet next to the Harmoni Hotel. 🙂

3D2N Batam Itinerary with kids

Anyway, encountering a McDonald’s outlet next to the Harmoni Hotel helped us to keep the kid entertained. During any family holiday, I like to find some kid friendly activities to keep the kid without getting bored. So, we can enjoy a peaceful trip. 🙂

After returning to the hotel, our dinner place was a small restaurant opposite the Harmoni Hotel Batam where we found Indian food.

Day 2 started with a plan to visit a Buddhist Temple in Batam. Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Temple is a few kilometres away from the hotel we stayed at. We hired a taxi to visit there.

Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Temple

Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Temple is a peaceful relaxing place. While we were looking at the statues and surrounding, kid enjoyed relaxing time in this spacious temple.

Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Temple

We had a plan to visit Batam Centre after visiting this Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Temple. However, kid was unhappy and he looked tired. We had to change our travel plan and returned to the hotel to spend time in relaxing activities.

Anyway,in this visit to Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Temple, I could capture some Batam street art and posted those in another blog post. Check that Batam street art too.

After our lunch at a nearby restaurant to the hotel, we spent the rest of the time at the swimming pool with the kid. He was so happy as he could play few hours. We booked Harmoni Hotel as it is one of the hotels in Batam with kids’ swimming pool facilities.

Swimming at Harmoni Hotel-Batam

It is time to return to Singapore. Although we were limited with time, we visited Nagoya Hill Shopping mall after the breakfast at the hotel. The first day we visited the Nagoya Shopping Mall, I noticed few more items to buy. As we didn’t visit other shopping malls such as Mega Mall and DC mall, finally we decided to visit Nagoya shopping Mall again.

Nagoya hill street art

Instead of hiring a taxi, we decided to walk to the Nagoya mall. We enjoyed walking to the shopping mall as it was a great opportunity to explore the streets of Nagoya. As we noticed, it is a less crowded city. We didn’t see any public transport vehicles. Check Nagoya street art

Batam Nagoya hill

After a quick walking tour and shopping a few items in Nagoya Hill shopping mall, we returned to the hotel for check out.

Our hotel stay was satisfied and the staff was friendly. It was easy to hire a taxi from the counter at the hotel entrance.

Harbour Bay ferry terminal

Check more photos of ocean and sky views on our departure back from Batam to Singapore by ferry . Those views were fabulous and therefore I thought it is worth sharing in a travel photo essay.

Sentosa views from ferry

We had a nice short holiday in Batam. As we live in Singapore, we have a hope to visit Batam again. Next time, we will plan our Batam holiday via the Batam Centre Ferry Terminal to explore the other side of this beautiful island of Indonesia.

Helpful information for planning your Batam Getaway

How to get there.

Batam is just less than 1 hour ferry ride away from Singapore. Therefore reaching Batam by ferry is popular among the travellers. You can book your ferry to reach either Batam Centre ferry terminal or Harbor Bay ferry terminal.

Our favourite ferry provider to Batam is Horizon Fast ferry . You can also book your ferry with Batam Fast or Majestic Fast ferry.

Ticket cost is around $50 per person, round trip.

Accommodation in Batam

Finding accommodation is not that difficult when you plan your Batam getaway. However, it is good to book your hotel before you reach there. Batam can be crowded during most of the long weekends as many people residing in Singapore like to visit Batam.

You can book accommodation ranging from luxury Batam Villas to cheap holiday rentals. However, be sure to choose a family-friendly hotel if you travel with kids.

We booked Harmoni Hotel through Agoda.

How to get around Batam?

Hiring a taxi is easier than you may think. At the ferry terminal and in shopping malls there are taxi counters. Therefore you can hire a taxi easily with the pre-decided rates. The taxi rates are displayed in the taxi counters for easy reference. Hiring a taxi from such a taxi counter is secure and convenient.

There are taxi counters in front of most hotels too. You can ask for help from the reception if you want to book a taxi.

There will be more posts on this 3D2N Batam getaway including a Horizon Fast ferry review and Harmoni Hotel Batam review. I will also share more photos from Nagoya City Walk .

Till that please share your comments. Have you been to Batam or any parts of Indonesia? Also, read our 3D2N Bintan itinerary which is a trip to another beautiful island in Indonesia.

Important information to plan your Batam Itinerary

Below are some resources to help you in planning your Batam itinerary.

You can easily book 1 day Batam City Tour.

It is also easy to book your private car charter to visit around Batam.

10 ways to experience Indonesia on a budget

Budget for your trip to Indonesia with these top tips along with a guide to daily costs © fernanda photos / Shutterstock

With a million rupiah currently equal to around US$65, you’ll be transformed into a millionaire the moment you touch down in Indonesia .

If you choose the simple beach-bumming lifestyle, you should budget to spend around a million rupiah a week. Alternatively, live the high life with some of the most luxurious five-star hotels on the planet at low-season prices that are a fraction of the cost elsewhere.

This guide to daily costs, along with tips on saving money, can help you budget for your visit to Indonesia.

Daily costs

  • Local coffee in a streetside  warung (stall): $1
  • Cappuccino in a fancy cafe: $2.50
  • A hearty plate of fried rice/noodles: $1
  • The same meal in a tourist venue: $4
  • Cocktail at a happy-hour beach bar: $5
  • Beer in a hotel bar: $3
  • Glass of house wine at a resort: $6 (sometimes up to $25!)
  • 1.5L (50oz) bottle of water: $0.25
  • Surfboard rental: $3.50 per session
  • 90-minute yoga class: $10 (less if you get a package price )

1. Take your pick from thousands of islands

Bali  is substantially more expensive than neighboring Java , which is in turn slightly more expensive than Sumatra , but the sheer amount of competition vying for the tourist dollars means you can stay very cheaply. In Bali, two people could spend around $20 a day, including a private room, meals and scooter rental.

In general, as you go further to less touristed islands, the cost of living diminishes. Bear in mind, though, that at the extremes of the world’s greatest island nation – in the Alor archipelago, for example, or in the distant Maluku islands – prices are higher due to the transportation costs of getting goods (and vehicles and fuel) to remote regions.

2. Choose the cheapest time to go

October to April is rainy season in Bali and central Indonesia, and the cheapest season to travel here. Unless you are going far off the beaten track – jungle trekking or volcano climbing, for example – this is often a lovely time to be in Indonesia. The rains are usually short and sharp, and interspersed with blissful sunny days (avoid Christmas school holidays and New Year, though.)

3. Find an inexpensive flight

Sign up to Jack’s Flight Club for prompt updates about cheap flights to Jakarta or Bali. Within Indonesia, national carrier Garuda Indonesia , Air Asia or Lion Air link all the other main islands. For a rough idea of flight prices, you can travel one way between Jakarta and Bali from around $40, or from Bali to Labuan Bajo (for access to Komodo) from around $36.

4. Book the best-value accommodations

You can book in advance, of course, but if every dollar counts, consider booking just the first night or two, because the best deals – in hostel-packed Kuta , for example – are often found by asking around. With private rooms available from as low as $2 in some parts of Indonesia, dorms are rare.

It can often be more cost-effective to rent a long-term bungalow or villa through an apartment rental site than to pay for a nightly hotel room. A good air-conditioned double room in Bali will cost $8 a night (breakfast included), but a self-catering bungalow in the central  Ubud area  with its own garden and kitchen might cost around $6 a night if you book a full month.

A man rides a scooter past the gates of a Balinese temple

5. Car and scooter hire is inexpensive

Public transportation in Indonesia is cheap but erratic, so most travelers opt to rent a vehicle. To keep costs at a minimum, consider renting long-term. Scooters are cheap (often around $2–3 a day if you rent for a week or more), but for the sake of safety and security, consider upgrading to a car, which will set you back around $15 per day – which is especially affordable if you're traveling with friends. With petrol costing less than $0.65 per liter ($0.17 per gallon), self-driving in Indonesia is inexpensive.

Driving in Indonesia – especially in Bali with its swarms of motorbikes – is not for the fainthearted, so if you prefer not to drive yourself, you can hire a car and driver for around $30 per day.

6. Use taxicab apps for local rates

Bluebird Taxis has 23,000 vehicles throughout Indonesia, and while convenient, they can be about twice the price of Grab , the Singapore-based company that acquired Uber in Asia.

Before leaving home, download the apps for Grab and Gojek , which claims to have two million motorbike taxis across Southeast Asia. These options mean you'll only pay local rates for transport, so no haggling every time you need to take a car or motorbike taxi, and no need for complex multilingual conversations trying to confirm destinations or give directions.

7. Ferries, buses and trains are cheap but take a long time

Ferries connect some of the islands, and they're inexpensive, though erratic and time-consuming. Take the trip from Labuan Bajo to Bali, for example: the weekly ferry costs less than $20, but it's a 33-hour ride compared with an hour-long flight.

On larger islands, long-distance buses connect all the main cities, but only on Java and parts of Sumatra can you count on getting around by rail. As a general rule, you can figure that a seat on a train will cost you about $1.50 for each hour of travel, and you can book through Kareta Api Indonesia . A bus ticket is usually slightly cheaper and almost always faster than Indonesian trains.

8. Eat local to eat cheap

While Indonesia lacks the culinary variety of much smaller Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore, you can count on finding hearty local food at affordable prices. Unless you are in a tourist center, you can usually find a single-plate meal – normally nasi goreng (fried rice) or mie goreng (fried noodles) – for less than $1. Because they are cooked on the spot, ingredients are usually fresh and frequently delicious.

The West Sumatran city of Padang has exported its fine gastronomic traditions, and you will find Masakan Padang (literally Padang-style cooking) eateries – typically a buffet where you're given a plate of rice and simply point to whatever extras you fancy – in virtually every town throughout the country. You can often grab a veritable feast for around $2; try to pick establishments that seem to have a constant turnaround of diners.

9. Stay off the booze

The best way to keep costs low in Indonesia is simply to avoid alcohol. A bottle of Bintang, the standard local beer, is about $2, a bottle of "cheap" wine starts at around $10, and a bottle of imported gin or whisky will likely set you back $30 or more. Those are supermarket prices – the figures will likely triple in a trendy bar. If you want to party without breaking the bank, look out for the ubiquitous two-for-one sundowner happy-hour deals.

10. Haggling is part of the culture

Haggling is a way of life in Indonesia, and outside of big, fixed-price malls and supermarkets, you will be expected to haggle for most things. Although many travelers are uncomfortable about bargaining for purchases, you’ll soon find that a smile, a joke and a couple of reliable stock phrases can transform a boring shopping trip into an opportunity to bond with local people. At its best, haggling turns a mere business transaction into something far more human.

"Bukan harga bule"  (not foreigner price) is good for a smile.

"Saya sudah bankrupt"  (I’m already bankrupt) guarantees outright belly laughs.

Remember, though, that your haggling should only be driven toward establishing a fair price that is good for both parties. Some travelers pride themselves on their tough haggling skills, believing that a street vendor will always be making a profit regardless. This is not always true: most store-holders will prefer to sell at a loss if it is the only way that they can feed their family that night.

Indonesia probes possible Batam ferry price-fixing

Indonesia probes possible Batam ferry price-fixing

JAKARTA/SINGAPORE – Singaporean manager Zheng Huang was shocked to find that his round-trip ferry ticket to Indonesia’s Batam island had soared to more than $70 over the past two years.

The 53-year-old, who used to visit the holiday spot every weekend for dining and shopping, now limits his trips to once or twice a month.

“That is the only way out now... (So when) you are there, you better make the most of your time,” he told The Straits Times.

His friends shared his frustration. “It’s not within our control... we are held hostage,” he lamented.

Like Mr Zheng, other Singaporeans who make the hour-long journey have been left baffled by the steep hikes – uniformly imposed by multiple operators – after Batam, part of Riau Islands province, reopened to international travellers in January 2022 as the Covid-19 pandemic waned.

Now, the mystery may be a step closer to being solved after Indonesia’s independent business watchdog disclosed that it has launched a probe into potential collusion and price-fixing among ferry operators on the route.

Customers work on laptops at a cafe in the Seminyak area of Bali, Indonesia, on Oct 29, 2021.

Foreigners working in Bali without proper visa may be banned

Related stories, cetta expands into new sectors by acquiring stake in eas.ai, maid teaches english online to kids from her village, volcano in eastern indonesia erupts, alert level raised.

The probe began in 2022 following complaints from passengers, and the local media reported about the investigation on May 29.

On May 29, Indonesia’s Business Competition Supervisory Commission revealed that operators charged 800,000 rupiah (S$67) to 900,000 rupiah for a round-trip ticket from January to June 2022, more than twice the usual price of 270,000 rupiah to 450,000 rupiah.

An ST check on the websites of ferry operators found that round-trip tickets from Singapore’s HarbourFront Centre to Indonesia’s Batam Centre International Ferry Terminal cost $34 to $60 in 2021 and $56 to $76 in 2024.

Mr Ridho Pamungkas, the commission’s chief for the northern Sumatra region, told ST that four operators are under investigation for alleged cartel practices, with their Singapore-based parent companies yet to be summoned. Attempts by ST to contact the companies have been unsuccessful.

“The prices now are unreasonably high. It appears the businesses have agreed to fix prices at similar high values, so there is no competition between them,” he said.

Mr Ridho noted that ferry ticket prices between Batam and Johor Bahru are lower despite the longer two-hour journey, so the Batam-Singapore fare is “an unhealthy sign”.

The commission has faced “many obstacles” during its investigation over the past two years, such as obtaining information on the operators’ expenses, he said.

“The ferry operators’ management was uncooperative in providing data, making it difficult to gather evidence,” Mr Ridho said, adding that the parent companies being based in Singapore – and thus outside Indonesia’s legal purview – only complicated matters.

The commission’s head office in Jakarta held a focus group meeting with the Transportation Ministry, BP Batam and the Riau Islands provincial administration on May 28 to discuss the high fares and possible collusion.

A follow-up meeting will be held in Batam on June 11, this time with the ferry operators in attendance. “We are committed to resolving this problem,” Mr Ridho said.

According to Mr Ridho, around 200,000 people of various nationalities travel from Singapore to Batam each month.

BP Batam’s port management director, Mr Dendi Gustinandar, told ST that ferry ticket prices to non-domestic destinations had indeed increased post-pandemic.

Before the pandemic, ferry services between Batam and Singapore served 3.9 million passengers annually, including 1.9 million foreign tourists. Since then, ticket sales have recovered to 60 per cent of what they were before the pandemic.

Mr Dendi said operators have attributed the price hike to rising fuel costs and lower passenger numbers.

Ferry employees at Batam terminals declined to comment on the ticket prices, directing ST to “ask the boss”.

Meanwhile, Singaporean travellers say higher ferry prices will harm Batam’s tourism sector and deter people seeking affordable weekend getaways. Some plan to cut down on their trips.

Mr Benson Toh, 47, a public service manager, said: “I find this ferry ride expensive because Batam is so near. If the price keeps increasing, I won’t go there so frequently.”

Housewife Nur Fazirah, 25, said: “It is overpriced… Last time it was easy for us to travel to Batam, but now the price is not worth it.”

Singaporeans say they can understand why ferry operators were trying to make up for their losses during the pandemic, but that does not justify the current prices.

Ms Farlyana Johari, a 35-year-old special education teacher, said the price increase was too drastic, especially since there was no improvement in the quality of vessels or reduction in trip times, adding: “It is a lot to just go to Batam for one hour, then come back.”

But many others said they will continue to visit the island.

Mr Rick Heng, 51, a security supervisor, considers it a “give-and-take” situation given the global rise in prices of goods and services.

Another traveller, 45-year-old finance controller Vincent Lin, said: “I will continue to travel to Batam by ferry even with the price increase as things in Batam are cheap, so it is still worth it.”

Asian billionaires tahir, reddy deepen partnership with new hospital project in indonesia.

Mayapada Hospital in Bandung, Indonesia - June 18, 2023

Indonesian tycoon Tahir is deepening his partnership with Indian billionaire Prathap Reddy ’s Apollo Hospitals with plans to build a hospital on Batam island, about an hour by ferry from Singapore.

To be named Mayapada Apollo Batam International Hospital, the hospital will be built on a three-hectare site within a special economic zone to be managed by Tahir’s Mayapada Group in Batam. Tahir-backed Sejahteraraya Anugrahjaya said it will invest up to two trillion rupiah ($128 million) in the hospital.

“The collaboration with Apollo Hospitals India aims to handle advanced and complex health cases for all Indonesian people,” Jonathan Tahir, chairman & CEO of Mayapada Healthcare said in a statement. “It will thereby reduce the need for people to seek treatment abroad and also make Indonesia a medical tourism destination.”

Mayapada has been expanding in the booming healthcare sector in recent years. Last year, it broke ground on the group’s seventh Mayapada Hospital located in the new capital, Nusantara. The hospital, which is also a partnership with Apollo Hospitals, will start commercial operations in August.

“Apollo Hospitals can contribute by providing decades of medical competence and experience, especially in complex procedures, such as organ transplants and cancer treatment,” Dr. Harinder Singh Sidhu, senior vice president of Apollo Hospitals Group said in the statement.

Other companies have also been doubling down on Indonesia’s healthcare sector. Recently Singapore’s GIC raised its stake in Siloam Hospitals, backed by Tahir’s in-laws, billionaire Mochtar Riady. Saratoga Investama Sedaya, backed by tycoon Edwin Soeryadjaya also acquired the Brawijaya Hospital in Jakarta.

Besides healthcare, Mayapada Group has interests in banking and real estate. With a net worth of $4.2 billion Tahir and his family ranked No. 14 on Indonesia’s 50 Richest list that was published in December.

Tahir’s partner in the venture, Reddy is a cardiologist who founded Apollo Hospitals Enterprise in 1983. The company currently operates around 70 hospitals and almost 6,500 pharmacies. Reddy has a net worth of $2.48 billion.
