Father’s day gift guide 2024: the best wine trips and tips for dad.

Father and son tasting white wine in a vineyard

If the dad in your life loves wine, these wineries, vineyards, and special vintages are sure to please.

Dads deserve great wine, and a trip to a wine region is the ultimate splurge for fathers who want to immerse themselves in wine culture this Father’s Day or any day. Here are my picks for destinations across the U.S. (including your own house) that spoil dads with unique wine-tasting experiences.

Bryan, Texas

The tasting room at Messina Hof in Bryan

Adjacent to College Station, home of Texas A&M, is one of the state’s flagship winemakers, Messina Hof . While they have a tasting room in Texas Hill Country (increasingly becoming known as Texas Wine Country), and two more in Grapevine and Harvest Green, their location in Bryan is a lovely getaway in a quiet town, where dad can truly feel like he’s on vacation. Stay at the Villa Bed & Breakfast right on the Messina Hof estate – each room is decorated differently and feels like staying in your Italian grandparents’ home. Take a few steps to the tasting room, and you’re presented with wines that reflect over 40 years of experience, each better than the next. Next door is the Vintage House Restaurant, where your waiter will suggest wine pairings to complement farm-fresh meals. And for a special treat, schedule a cellar tour so dad can sample wines straight from the barrel.

TIP: Order some wines from the Paolo line and be sure to try the Sagrantino, as Messina Hof is the largest producer of this varietal in the nation.

Napa Valley, California

Cliff Lede Winery and Vineyard as seen from Poetry Inn.

Google Chrome Deadline 72 Hours To Update Or Delete Your Browser

The fed quietly admits gold is replacing the dollar as collapse fear predicted to trigger a 15 7 trillion etf bitcoin price flip, private student loan forgiveness application is now available, but few may be aware.

If dad loves some music with his wine, look no further than Cliff Lede Vineyards for a beautiful getaway in the heart of Napa Valley. Enter through the garden overflowing with flowers and eye-catching sculptures and make your way to the Backstage Tasting Lounge with its clubby vibe. Here, dad can settle into a plush chair or wander the room perusing the rotating art and the coolest aspect of all – a collection of limited edition rock music paraphernalia. Signed electric guitars and framed, handwritten lyrics from the likes of John Lennon line the walls. A stroll outside will delight – each block is named after the owner’s favorite rock songs and albums, so you’ll pass vines labeled “My Generation” or “Dark Side of the Moon.” The collection composes the Cliff Lede Rock Blocks, and each year two or more of the blocks are combined into a “mash up” that is featured in the tasting room. My favorites here? Have dad try the Cabernet Franc and the Sémillon. He can thank me later.

Reserve a room at the Poetry Inn Napa Valley , a grand estate with epic views of Cliff Lede and it’s surrounding vineyard. The Inn’s vineyard is the sole source of the estate’s flagship cabernet sauvignon, the aptly named Poetry. Indulge in a three-course breakfast served on the porch and relax in a luxurious poet-themed room.

While in Napa, treat dad to a bottle to take home. The Frank Family Patriarch Cabernet Sauvignon out of Frank Family Vineyards has a special story behind it. It’s dedicated to Rich Frank’s late father and World War II vet, Hy Frank, who was deployed to Normandy and landed on Omaha Beach four days after D-Day. Frank attributes his successful career as president of Disney Studios (among other titles) to his father's dedication, values and hard work, and he demonstrated that by presenting the first release of Patriarch to his father on his 98th birthday. Produced in very limited quantities, the Patriarch is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the best rows of vines on Frank's personal hillside estate vineyard in Rutherford.

The Dalles, Oregon

The Sunshine Mill Artisan Plaza and Winery in The Dalles, Oregon

If Dad is a faithful Shark Tank viewer, he knows the name James Martin. Martin was the first to turn down a Shark Tank deal (from Mr. Wonderful, no less), and the first to return to the Tank, where he rejected a second offer. Instead, he took his idea of “wine by the glass” back to Oregon, where he created single serving bottles of wine called Copa di Vino. He now sells 40-50,000 cases of Copa a year but also produces small batch wine through his Quenett Winery, something dad must absolutely try on his visit. While The Dalles, in the Hood River region of Oregon, is known for its outdoor activities, the Sunshine Mill Artisan Plaza and Winery where Martin and his wife Molli introduce their wines to visitors, is an uber cool break from activity. It’s housed in a 130-year-old flour mill formerly occupied by Sunshine Biscuit Company, famous for producing Cheez-Its. Now, this winery in the Columbia River Gorge has converted a parking lot into a drive-up movie lot and offers wine tastings in the Grand Tasting Hall, where dad can check out the old factory machinery, and the whole family can shop at the artisan market.

Lodi, California

A California vineyard ripe with grapes

Lodi wine country is smaller than its neighbors Napa and Sonoma, and tastings tend to be more affordable and relaxed in this area. This is the place for the casual dad who just wants to enjoy his wine without pretension. While he can spend days traversing vineyards and wineries, he should start at Oak Ridge Winery , housed in a 50,000 gallon redwood barrel lovingly referred to as industrial chic. The first time I drank the wines from their Old Soul brand, I was hooked, and dad will be too. Old Soul Cabernet recently scored 90 points and a Best Buy ranking from Wine Enthusiast. This year, Oak Ridge is celebrating Father’s Day with a Cabs for Dad sale – buy a bottle at a great price, take a seat outside, listen to live music on Saturday, and order from the onsite food truck.

Dad’s Backyard, Den, Or Any Favorite Place

Sommsation delivers the tasting experience to you, whether you're at home or at an event space.

If budget or time doesn’t allow for traveling far from home, you can still give dad a present that will make him feel like he’s on vacation. It may even prompt a future trip to a newly discovered wine region. Especially great for families who can’t be together for Father’s Day, the Sommsation wine tasting experience allows everyone to get together without hopping on a plane. Sommsation sets up a virtual tasting, then everyone logs in at a specified time to meet their personal sommelier and sip their way through an evening. You pick the wines that interest you most from the library of over 300 wines – we tried Sleight of Hand Cellars out of Walla Walla, Washington. Sommsation ships the bottles to each participant’s home in advance of the tasting and even offers snack foods and charcuterie boards for a full wine tasting experience. Unsure what wines dad loves the most? Use the gift card option so he can customize his tasting.

City Winery is more than just wine: it's an experience

When you see the word winery, you think of wine tasting, grapevines, bottles of wine and relaxing on a patio.

City Winery in Montgomery is all that, but you will be as surprised as I was to find out it’s so much more: a vineyard, restaurant, outdoor concert venue and private events space.

City Winery was founded in 2008 by Michael Dorf, who lives in the Hudson Valley. There are locations in New York City, Chicago, Nashville, Atlanta, Boston, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Pittsburgh and Columbus to name a few.

The Montgomery, a hydro-powered winery, opened in 2020.

Stepping through the door of the renovated, old Montgomery Mills, you are met with the historic feel that Dorf maintained in the building. From brick to salvaged exposed inner workings of the mill on the ceiling and in other areas of the building, anyone who loves the rustic feel and history will be quite comfortable here.

My husband, Jay, and I started with a tour of the winery.

The main room is huge, with a bar, wine tasting bar and restaurant. A fireplace is centered in the middle of the room.

The banquet room is equally large and through the large window, guests can see the stainless steel wine tanks that rise from the basement. There is the boiler room which is the comedy club where you are entertained by the many comics that are scheduled to perform there.

There are several concerts planned for both indoor and outdoors on the large lawn (listed below). There are also two patios for outdoor eating on those nice summer evenings. In the cooler months there are heat lamps and outdoor fireplaces to keep you warm. You can enjoy your meal and wine at your table, which is surrounded by the Mills brick walls and huge smoke stack, while listening to the Wallkill River that runs by the winery. I could have sat there all night.

In the basement, where the temperature is kept at a cool 65 degrees, are all the stainless steel tanks, oak barrels and concrete eggs that contain City Winery’s very own wine. For $15, one can taste five of the wines or take the Tasting and Tour at a cost of $45. It starts with a glass of bubbly, then you tour the interior, including the winery, and then the exterior of the property. The tour ends at the tasting bar where there is a cheese board waiting and an opportunity to indulge in a guided tasting of five wines.

Travis Van Caster, winemaker, joined us at the tasting bar along with tasting room manager, Marygiula Capobianco. Van Caster has been making wine since 2007. He explained each wine, where the grapes came from and why certain wines need to go in certain glasses and which ones should be served chilled or room temperature.

My favorites were the Mid Summer White and Mid Summer Red, the Port Wine and the Ice House, a dessert wine made from frozen grapes. Their wines have won numerous awards. City Winery even has wine on tap, a system created by Chief Winemaker David Lecomte. It goes from the cellar, to the keg room to your glass. They also serve local beers and offer cocktails for the non-wine drinkers.

They strive to bring in the best grapes from world-class vineyards like those in California, Oregon, Washington, the Finger Lakes, Argentina and Chile. They bottle and label on site.

“If you start with the best ingredients, you will get the best product,” Van Caster said.

The restaurant

After the tasting, we sat down for dinner on the outside patio. The Barrel Room Restaurant is very casual. They serve everything from burgers to Mediterranean branzino, pizza and soups and salads. There are also vegetarian and gluten free options. The restaurant is open for dinner, Happy Hour and weekend brunch service.

We started with Mushroom and Goat Cheese Risotto Balls that were to die for, and for entree Jay had the City Winery Burger with brie and cabernet onion jam. I had the local Roasted Steelhead Trout that sat on a fava bean corn succotash with fingerling potatoes and saffron aioli. For dessert we shared the S’mores Lava Cake that was served warm with a toasted marshmallow top. We were not disappointed!

The entertainment

The “ Concerts in the Vineyard” summer series is underway. The Winery combines a concert venue, restaurant and winery in one location. Outdoor concerts are held in the amphitheater that is surrounded by a sloped lawn that will give any concert goer the perfect view. The stage is surrounded by vineyards that overlook the Wallkill River. Doors for all performances open at noon, with a start time of 2 p.m.

The outdoor series includes:

  • July 1 - Marc Broussard
  • July 2 - Judy Collins
  • July 9 - Damn the Torpedoes (Tom Petty tribute)
  • July 23 - Rising Appalachia
  • July 29 -  Josh Ritter & Band
  • July 30- Long Beach Dub Allstars
  • Aug 5 - Big Freedia
  • Aug 6 - Southside Johnny

In addition to its outdoor concert series, City Winery offers indoor performances and concerts in the Falls Room. Those performances include:

  • July 6 - Shake Rattle & Roll Pianos
  • July 16 - Shemekia Copeland
  • July 27 - Richard Thompson
  • July 28 -   Ann Hampton Callaway - Fever: A Peggy Lee Celebration
  • July 29 - No Clue! An interactive murder mystery dinner
  • Aug 14 - Bebel Gilberto
  • Aug 30 - An evening with Shinyribs

There is also a full lineup of comedy shows.

Worth a visit

I was really impressed by City Winery. Little did I know that something this great was right in my own backyard. While it is a great winery, it is much, much more. Be sure to pay a visit to City Winery for food, music, wine, tours, wine events and an even greater atmosphere and staff.

Go: 23 Factory St., Montgomery, 845-424-0222, citywinery.com/hudsonvalley.

It was a great experience coming there to celebrate our dog's birthday. My family and I had a lot of fun drinking and enjoying the band. First off, the food was beyond amazing. Every single dish was perfect, especially the cheese fondue. That's my favorite! And it also helps that all the servers there were extremely polite and attentive to all our needs. None of them were rude or had a I don't care vibe. Each of them were very friendly and nice to my dog too. The food came fast too, which helps. Each of us also enjoyed the band, which we were lucky enough to arrive at the timing. So, all in all, great food, friendly service, and fun atmosphere. If you want to come for a fun and relaxing evening/night, definitely come here! I'd recommend this restaurant/bar!

As someone who frequents Napa and Bay Area wine bars, I wanted to find one that was close to home, so I checked this one out with my partner. At first, we were greeted and things seemed fine. It wasn't too crowded on a Friday evening, and there was live music. Wine selection and food were decent. We had the small charcuterie and cheese board, a flatbread, and a bottle of white wine. However, the service did not really live up to the expectations that I read on Yelp. To be honest, I am not sure if this is a wine bar or just a bar in general I understand that I may not be the typical demographic than many of the other patrons, but I'd hope that they would've treat myself, and any other guest well enough regardless of age or how we looked. We weren't really visited after we were given our food, no refill on water, and I waited about 15 mins before I walked up to the bartender to ask for the check. To be honest I would have ordered another bottle, but after a party who seemed to know the bartender and staff came in, we felt like we were pretty nonexistent. Not sure if this is typically how a Friday is, but it definitely didn't make us feel welcomed. We do love wine, and we love to support local business, but not sure if this experience was something that we would return to. I always give things a second chance, so maybe the next time will be better. I hear there are other wine bars in the area, so hopefully we can explore and find our go to place outside of Napa.

Love a happy hour on the weekend! Have passed by this place so many times and decided to try today. We ordered the Cheese fondue and Ruben sliders along with a paper plane and old fashion. Service here is great and very comfortable and enjoyable place to grab a drink and food. Will definitely be back!!

10/10 customer service, good wine and a good time. I came in with a few friends after my birthday dinner on a Thursday night, and it was one of the few places in Pleasanton that didn't feel totally dead. We ordered a mix of cocktails, wine and wine flights, and all were great and reasonably priced. The bartender came over to tell us the kitchen was closing in case we wanted food, and my friend asked if they had any desserts to celebrate my birthday. They didn't, but he mentioned that they wanted to bring back a partnership with Primrose Bakery down the street. A short while later, he came to our table with a few desserts on a plate. He had actually GONE to Primrose (a few blocks away) and bought the desserts for us, and served them on the house for my birthday! It was a very generous touch, and between that and a nice ambience and good drink options, we will definitely be back!

Came here for a birthday at 2pm on a Saturday and it was empty so we chose the comfy window booth to sit at. Staff was inviting and knowledgeable, even though our server was underage and had not tried any of the drink menu lol. We got a bottle of light sparkling wine to start to start as well as their hummus plate and their flatbread with red wine braised red onions, prosciutto, and burrata. The wine was light, floral, and perfectly bubbly - I wish I took a picture of the menu! The hummus plate came out first and it was the perfect snack to tide us over. The veggies were crisp, pita chips were good, and the hummus was smokey and seasoned well. Their flatbread was to die for, it was an elite combo of sweet and savory on a crisp and chewy flatbread. We ended with a half-bottle of moscato, which was sweet and had wonderful fruity notes. Overall, such a cute place to catch up with friends or for a little date. The cozy and intimate vibes coupled with their large selection of wines and delicious food is a guaranteed good time!

They have the best cocktails, and on the weekends they have live music. The espresso martini is fantastic and out of this world.
