These Cruises May Be the Best Way to See Fall Foliage

Sit back and enjoy the views.

fall foliage cruise boat

On fall foliage road trips , the journey is the destination, but why not make the journey as carefree and hands-off as possible? Hop aboard a leaf-peeping cruise with American Queen Voyages , and you can skip the navigating, route planning, and long hours of driving. Instead, your adventure could look like sailing between quaint towns with stunning fall foliage and plenty of time to explore at stops along the way.

Nothing officially separates an American Queen Voyages leaf-peeping cruise from a non-leaf-peeping cruise; what sets it apart is simply the time of year in which it takes place. Book a fall sailing and you can hit the best leaf-peeping spots at peak season — and do it from the cozy stateroom of your small-ship river or ocean cruise for a unique experience.

Courtesy of Hornblower Cruises

One option is the Montreal to Chicago route, which hits Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and the southern Canadian coast, including overnight stays in Toronto and Mackinac Island . But you’ll have to plan pretty far in advance, as the September 2022 voyage has passed, with the next one slated for September 2024.

Boston to Saint John, New Brunswick , sails twice in October 2022 and twice in October 2023. Along this route, you’ll catch classic New England fall foliage from the water while cruising along the coast. The fiery fall colors of Bar Harbor, Maine, contrasting with the steep granite cliffs of the Acadia National Park region is a sight to behold toward the end of the journey.

While the New England area is a crowd favorite for fall foliage, the Pacific Northwest has some gorgeous seasonal scenery, too, and the Spokane to Portland route has available dates through November 2022 (and into 2023 and 2024 as well).

As the four-deck American Empress — the largest overnight riverboat west of the Mississippi — sails along the Columbia River, the vivid colors are never out of sight for long; every day, passengers will find themselves surrounded by spruce and pine forests, rolling vineyard hills, or groves of cherry trees. Best of all, each stateroom comes with a window, and many also have a veranda for your own private viewing of one of nature’s best shows. And when you disembark in Portland, make sure to check out the Portland Japanese Garden for yellows, oranges, and reds straight out of a storybook.

Best Fall Foliage Cruise Destinations

By Sue Bryant

Last updated: February 22nd, 2024

Acadia National Park in autumn with beautiful trees reflecting on lake

  • Find a Cruise

One of the best ways to enjoy the breathtaking hues of the changing of the seasons is on a fall foliage cruise across New England and Canada. Aside from the crisp air and the cozy sweater weather, the colorful transformation of the trees is one of the top reasons why fall is so magical.

Board either Celebrity Silhouette or Celebrity Eclipse in August or September when both cruise along the Northeast coast. You’ll be able to spot the vivid greens and, later in September, the stunning reds, brilliant oranges, and mustard yellows that decorate the landscape.

Aside from giving you a prime seat to enjoy the beautiful scenery (which is especially gorgeous when it’s reflected in the water below), our fall foliage cruises visit a number of fascinating destinations along the way.

Boston, Massachusetts

Boston, Massachusetts, one of the best fall foliage cruise destinations

Your fall foliage cruise kicks off in Boston , an exciting city packed with culture, famed for its world-class universities, colorful history, and diverse neighborhoods.

Spending one day in Boston is enough to explore America’s past by visiting Revolutionary War battlefields and learning about Paul Revere’s daring midnight ride.

Immerse yourself in American history by following the two-and-a-half-mile Freedom Trail, marked by a red line on the sidewalk. You’ll pass Boston Common, Bunker Hill Monument, and Paul Revere’s house. Head to the waterfront to see the old Boston Tea Party ships.

Exterior of Quincy Market in Boston, Massachusetts

Quincy Market in Boston, Massachusetts

Shop for gifts at the legendary Quincy Market in downtown Boston and make time to explore the different neighborhoods, from swanky Beacon Hill to North End, famed for its Italian food scene.

Cross the Charles River and arrive in Cambridge, where the fall weather and the Ivy League students mingling in Harvard Square will make you nostalgic for your college days.

Rockland, Maine

Fall foliage cruise - Rockland, Maine

Pretty Rockland calls itself the “lobster capital of the world,” and justifiably so. You’ll find fresh lobster everywhere from fine dining restaurants to food trucks, and you can even join a local fishing boat to see how the tasty crustaceans are caught.

Or perhaps embark on a guided foodie walking tour on which you’ll sample artisanal cheeses and pastries, as well as seafood and locally brewed craft beer.

Rockland itself is a quintessential New England town set around a protected harbor that’s framed by rocky headlands and old-growth forest.

This is an especially artistic community, and there are some excellent galleries to check out. The Farnsworth Art Museum is one, showcasing the work of Maine-based artists.

Facade of Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse

Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse

There are plenty of things to do in Rockland to enjoy the great outdoors, too. The Rockland Harbor Trail traces the shoreline, with sweeping views of the coast and those vast Maine skies. Stroll along the almost mile-long granite breakwater to the old Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse, which has stood here since 1902, looking out for seals.

Waterfront of Camden

Rockland is a great base from which to explore the wooded countryside and coastline. Take a trip to the exquisite little coastal town of Camden, packed with quaint shops and galleries, and head up to the summit of Mount Battie for spectacular views down over Penobscot Bay. When the trees are sporting their fall colors, this vista is even more magnificent.

Halifax, Nova Scotia

Picturesque seascape in Halifax, Nova Scotia

Peggy’s Cove in Halifax, Nova Scotia

In Halifax , the capital of Nova Scotia, you’ll be surrounded by spectacular views of the changing leaves as fall sets in. But at any time of year, this is a fascinating port to visit, with a rich cultural scene.

There’s a strong Scottish influence here, as thousands of Scots emigrated to the New World, bringing their culture with them, including their brewing skills.

There are museums and galleries to explore; check out the fascinating and often moving Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 and the Maritime Museum of The Atlantic.

This houses an important collection of Titanic artifacts and memorabilia; Halifax is where the survivors of the disaster were brought, and where several of the victims are buried.

Food at a restaurant in Halifax, Nova Scotia

Restaurant in Halifax, Nova Scotia

Halifax has a buzzing culinary scene, too. Try crab cakes, fish and chips, and creamy East Coast Chowder, as well as poutine, Canada’s famous comfort food of fries topped with cheese curds and gravy.

Head for the Saturday farmer’s market on Lower Water Street to pick up authentic souvenirs, from sea glass jewelry to maple syrup, local art, and even lobster-shaped gummies.

If you’d like to explore the surrounding countryside, one of the best things to do in Halifax is to go on a drive through the city’s scenic lighthouse route towards Peggy’s Cove, a tiny fishing village that is the site of Canada’s most photographed lighthouse.

Sydney, Nova Scotia

Lush Cabot trail with hills view in autumn

Cabot Trail in Sydney, Nova Scotia

The small port city of Sydney is full of beautiful coastal vistas, historic sites, and vibrant nature walks. Learn all about its famous landmarks and culture during a walking tour of Old Sydney.

Check out the Cape Breton Miners’ Museum to learn how coal mining shaped this community. You can even head down the old mine to gain a sense of what it was like to work there.

For an undeniably picturesque view of the city, drive through the countryside, where you’ll pass by Cabot Trail’s lush hills, the Louisbourg Lighthouse, and St. Ann’s Bay.

If you’re looking for something a little more relaxed, head to the quaint town of Baddeck, the former summer home of Scottish scientist Alexander Graham Bell, who invented the telephone.

From there, admire the serene view of the surrounding Bras d’Or Lake. You can learn more about Bell in the Alexander Graham Bell Museum, which is full of artifacts relating to his great invention.

Quebec City, Quebec

Landscape view of Old Quebec City including Chateau Frontenac

Chateau Frontenac, Old Quebec City

Brush up on your French skills in Quebec City , the captivating capital of Quebec, lying on the St. Lawrence River. Feel as though you’ve stepped back in time as you walk through the cobbled lanes of Old Quebec and enjoy delectable French cuisine, from crepes to crusty baguettes.

One of the best things to do in Quebec City is to head up Cape Diamond to admire the iconic Chateau Frontenac. Built in 1893, it’s said to be the most photographed hotel in the world, thanks to its intricate beauty. Nearby is the massive Citadel, with wonderful views over the city.

Street view of Rue du Petit-Champlain, Quebec City

Rue du Petit-Champlain, Quebec City

Shop for souvenirs in the 400-year-old Place Royale and explore the Rue du Petit-Champlain for crafts and local fashions. Remember to pick up some maple syrup as a memento of your time in Canada.

To best experience the warm colors of Quebec City in the fall , journey down the St. Lawrence River and marvel at the scenery awash in autumn hues on your way to Canyon Sainte-Anne, a verdant gorge that really comes alive during the fall.

Check out the thundering Montmorency Falls, where you can tackle a via ferrata trail and a zipline.

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island

Scenic landscape of Charlottetown

Wander through the seaside cliffs and expansive green hills of Charlottetown . This small, picturesque town is located on Prince Edward Island amid a landscape of vast beaches, craggy cliffs, and rolling farmland.

On a panoramic drive through Charlottetown, you won’t be able to stop taking pictures of all the wonderful sights, including the town’s signature red and white lighthouses and the unspoiled beauty of Prince Edward Island National Park.

Look out for the adorable Anne of Green Gables House, the place that inspired the story of the red-haired heroine. A great way to do this city tour is by wagon, pulled by two majestic draft horses.

Stop to refuel on some of Prince Edward Island’s specialties, lobster and oysters. Because this is a rural farming community, you’ll find delicious farm-to-table cuisine wherever you go.

Portland, Maine

Fall foliage cruise - Portland, Maine

Portland Head Light, Maine

A fishing port since 1632, Portland, Maine has a rich history. The city perches on a peninsula with views of Casco Bay, dotted with rocky islands.

The famous Portland Head Light guards the shoreline from Fort Williams Park and has protected ships and their crews since 1791. Today, you can tour the old keepers’ quarters and learn about the vital role played by Maine’s lighthouses.

Portland’s downtown area is characterized by 19th-century warehouses and old brick buildings, many of them repurposed as cool restaurants and bars. Join a culinary walking tour to sample fresh lobster as well as cider and Maine wines.

View from the Eastern Promenade Trail in Portland, Maine

Eastern Promenade Trail in Portland, Maine

Experience the rugged coastline of Portland on a biking shore excursion. Pedal along the Eastern Promenade Trail, a waterfront path with stunning harbor and ocean views.

Pass by Bug Light, a 26-foot-tall lighthouse, and Fort Gorges, a former military fort located on Casco Bay. End your journey at Mackworth Island, where you’ll get to admire Maine’s fall foliage and its beautiful views.

Chasing Autumn: Fall Foliage Small Ship Cruises

Chasing Autumn: Fall Foliage Small Ship Cruises

Fall Foliage Small Ship Cruises

By Ted Scull.

In the northern U.S. and the Canadian-American St. Lawrence River Valley, deciduous trees turn from the mostly green of summer to a dazzling display of yellow, orange, burgundy, scarlet and purple. And fall foliage small ship cruises are an ideal way to get a front row seat for the show.

Fall Foliage Small Ship Cruises

Hudson River Valley at Bear Mountain Bridge

For someone who has lived in the Northeast most of his life, I always look forward to following the daily New York Times reports as October approaches to see how the changing colors are progressing south in my direction. While the mostly “gray” Times uses shades between black and white to show the march, there are websites (see below) using color coding that are prettier, but don’t tell shifting color any more accurately.

If the third week of October 2017 was any indication, the St. Lawrence Valley was near to or at the peak height of color, while downriver (northeast on the map) and the higher altitudes in New York State’s Adirondacks and Catskill are past their peak. The Hudson Valley is still in the first and second stages while New York City, 150 miles south of Albany, is still unaware of what’s happening to the north, a typically provincial attitude. This last year our peak was and usually is the first week of November.

Different trees exhibit different colors: red maples turn greenish-yellow, vibrant scarlet or burgundy; sugar maples yellow, orange and red; white ash to yellow, burgundy and purple; and American sycamore yellow and orange.

The cruise lines position their ships where they think the best shows will take place, and it is hit and miss sometimes, especially if the itineraries are east-west rather than north-south where some portion of the voyage will meet the colors at their best.

Blount Small Ship Cruises

( defunct since mid 2020 )

Blount Small Ship Cruises operates the most north-south voyages of our QuirkyCruise.com lines with three fall embarkations in New York for Montreal or just the reverse if embarking first in the Canadian port aboard either the 84-passenger Grande Caribe or Grande Mariner.

This complex route uses the St. Lawrence River and Seaway, Lake Ontario, Oswego and Erie canals and the Hudson River. Viewing is from the spacious top deck, and the pilot house is lowered to slide under low bridges along the Erie Canal.

Why choose this line? For Blount’s complex routes and innovative ship design that allows them to navigate waterways other ships can’t.

Victory Cruises Lines

Victory Cruises Lines sends two 202-passenger ships, Victory I and the brand-new Victory II, west to east and north-south with three cruises in October. The October 3 rd  departure operates from Boston to Halifax and on the 10 th  heads back to Boston (both 7 nights).

A third 10-night cruise leaves Toronto on October 16 for Portland, Maine. Acadia National Park, during a call at Bar Harbor, ME is one of the top locations to see the colors from the water and from atop Cadillac Mountain.

St. Lawrence Cruise Lines

St. Lawrence Cruise Lines’ 66-passenger Canadian Empress cruises more or less northeast and southwest on a 7-night October 15-22 trip embarking in Kingston for the scenic and wooded 1000 Islands, St. Lawrence Seaway to Montreal and return. Passengers have almost the entire top deck to view the spectacle.

Croisieres Jacques Cartier

Croisieres Jacques Cartier, a new Quebecois line, operates mostly the same St. Lawrence route from Toronto, Montreal and Quebec City with continuous 7-night cruises into October aboard the 68-passenger Jacques Cartier. The last departure of the season cruises the Saguenay Fjord for its wonderful fall colors and majestic scenery.

American Cruise Lines

American Cruise Lines provides by far the most fall foliage cruises with no less than three ships based in New York for Hudson River autumn runs along the stunning, and in some sections, deeply wooded valley anchored by stately mansions and lovely scenes celebrated in the Hudson River School of American painting.  The American Star (100 passengers), American Constitution (175 pax) and Independence (100 pax) all operate three cruises each on October 6, 13 and 20 th .

ACL also bases two of its Mississippi riverboats — America (185 pax) and Queen of the Mississippi (149 pax) — on Upper Mississippi cruises in the fall. One operates from St. Paul and sails down river and the other upriver from St. Louis. The best stretch in the autumn is Wabasha, MN to Winona, WI.

The woods bordering the Upper Mississippi.

In the Pacific Northwest, ACL sends the American Spirit (100 pax) on 7-nights round trips from Seattle into the island-studded Puget Sound on October 5, 12, 19 and 26.

While the colorful landscapes may be the initial draw, there is so much else to enjoy on these cruises — historic towns; stately mansions, some with notable gardens; and winding foot paths to lookouts above the rivers — all shared by a small continent of fellow passengers.

Why choose this line? They offer the most variety of itineraries.

Read more about ACL here.

More resources

Published by New York State, this fall foliage report lists the best places to see the colors, and has a useful tree leaf color guide.

For the Province of Quebec and the St. Lawrence River Valley, the Official tourist site of the Government of Québec  is full of useful info.

Scenic Pathways is packed with tips about the Upper Mississippi, for the stretch between Wabasha and Winona, Minnesota.

The official tourism site for the state of Washington offers great info for visitors to Puget Sound and the Columbia River — technically geared to drivers, the info also applies to small-ship cruises in the same regions. The lines that cruise the Columbia River do not specifically call attention to the fall colors, but in case you are interested they are American Cruise Lines, Lindblad Expeditions and UnCruise Adventures.

10 amazing fall foliage cruises you can take up the Hudson River this fall

Including brunch cruises with live music

Shaye Weaver

You don't need a car to see peak fall foliage in New York—you can take a boat! A number of NYC leaf-peeping boat cruises leave right from Manhattan and sail up the Hudson River, delivering your autumn dreams of gorgeous changing leaves.

RECOMMENDED: Where to see fall foliage in NYC

This October, we took the  Circle Line: Bear Mountain Full-Day Cruise , which as the name suggests, took us 50 miles north from Pier 83 to Bear Mountain and gave us three hours to hike trails and visit museums and its animal refuge before setting back down the river. It was a wonderful opportunity to escape the city sans car and train for the day and get some fresh air. Better yet, the cruise celebrates Oktoberfest with bratwurst, pork schnitzel, German potato salad, Prop & Peller Bavarian pretzels, and Sam Adams Oktoberfest beer and Warsteiner lager and a live Oompa band. It was a blast to get in party mode while anticipating our hike, seeing the beauty of the Palisades and Hudson Valley, listening to the captain point out landmarks and then relaxing on the way back home to NYC. The cruise goes on Saturdays and Sundays through October 31 and begins at $69 per person, which is really worth it.

Here are some other fall foliage cruises you should consider this autumn:

Seastreak: NYC Fall Foliage Brunch Cruise

Leaving from West 39th Street at 11:30am, this three-and-a-half-hour cruise takes you through Sandy Hook Bay, under the Verrazano Bridge, and along New York Harbor. You'll also see the shores of Hastings-on-the-Hudson, Tarrytown, Ossining, Croton Point, Haverstraw and Stony Point and get as far north as West Point. A buffet brunch is served while on deck with apple salad, tortellini salad, fingerling potato salad with haricot vert, butternut squash bisque, smoked salmon, flank steak, southwestern grilled chicken with mango salsa, and assorted pastries. This cruise is also narrated so you'll learn all about the sites you pass along the way. The cruise is offered Saturdays and Sundays through October 31. Tickets are $119 per person.

Classic Harbor Line's  Fall   Foliage  Cruises & Sails

Don’t have a full day to spend admiring the changing colors? Reserve a seat on the brunch cruise with Classic Harbor Line from Pier 62 for a shorter route, leaving just enough time for you to admire the gold, red and russet-hued leaves of the Palisades. From October 15 to November 14, these two-and-a-half-hour cruises offer the perfect trip up the Hudson:

  • Manhattan II : Grand Palisade Fall Foliage Cruise ($88-$106 per adult and $64 per child 3-14)
  • Full Moon: Fall Foliage Cruise on Full Moon from Chelsea Piers ($88-$106/adult and $64/child 3-14)
  • Kingston : Fall Foliage Cruise aboard Kingston ($88-106/adult and $64/child 3-14)
  • Adirondack : Fall Foliage Schooner Sail (3.5 hours; $88-106/adult, $64/child 5-14)

We suggest heading out on a weekend brunch cruise, which comes with a three-course prix fixe menu (includes New York bakery pastries, salmon and lox, chef’s autumn salad with roasted vegetables, oven-roasted ham and more) inside the glass observatory of the Yacht Manhattan and Manhattan II across two-and-a-half hours. It takes off on Saturdays and Sundays and tickets are $124-142 per adult and $72 per child 3-14.

The top-rated, two-hour Fall Foliage Luncheon Cruise on Fridays and Saturdays has a multi-course menu including homemade soups such as a spice roasted butternut squash soup or a cauliflower soup topped with prosciutto and Manchego cheese. A roasted pumpkin and candied walnut salad with Chef’s maple vinaigrette, and assorted tea sandwiches are also in rotation on the menu. Each booking group is seated at a private table separated by clear partitions, with the option to open sliding glass windows throughout the vessel. Tickets are $96-132 per adult and $72 per child 3-14.

Your ticket to a Classic Harbor Line trip also includes an autumnal spiked hot cocoa, as well as a well-curated selection of beer, wine, champagne, and soft drinks.

American Cruise Lines Will Offer More Summer Sailings on the Hudson River Next Year

American Cruise Lines’ fall foliage cruises on the Hudson River are so popular they typically sell out a year in advance.

Now, building off the success of those September and October sailings, the company has been testing out new early summer voyages along the Hudson River.

This spring, American Cruise Lines began offering an 8-day “Hudson River Summer Classic” voyage, which sails roundtrip from New York City. The new itinerary is similar to the fall foliage cruise, and includes stops in Catskill, Albany, Kingston, Hyde Park, West Point and Sleepy Hollow.

Those trips have been so successful that the company has already tripled the number of departures it will offer in 2025. Next year, sailings will be available throughout June, July and August.

The company is the only cruise line to offer overnight luxury river cruises on the Hudson River.

You won't be 'overcrowded by thousands of tourists': What to know about Montreal cruises

fall foliage cruise boat

  • Montreal is the largest city in Canada’s Quebec province.
  • The city offers a relatively quaint cruise experience.
  • The port welcomed just over 51,000 cruise guests in 2023.

On a recent afternoon, I strolled beside patches of purple flowers on a wooden walkway at the Port of Montreal. The Promenade d'Iberville green roof, with western red cedar decking and more than 24,000 aromatic and flowering plants, was built on top of the city’s main cruise terminal.

The effect was less industrial infrastructure – like many ports – and more charming urban parks.

Montreal may be the largest city in Canada’s Quebec province, but it offers a relatively quaint cruise experience. Bridges between Montreal and Quebec City block vessels with air draft – the distance from the waterline to the highest point on a ship – over 49 meters (or about 161 feet) from berthing at its facilities in Old Montreal.

The ships that visit are generally smaller (though the city can accommodate those with a maximum 50-meter (164 feet) air draft east of the Jacques Cartier Bridge).

“We are positioning Montreal as a niche port for luxury ships,” Yves Gilson, associate director of cruises at the Port of Montreal, told USA TODAY during a visit in May. Here’s what to know about sailing into and out of the city.

The cruise inventory tends to be upscale

Montreal typically welcomes ships carrying 2,000 passengers or less from several upscale cruise lines, which tend to operate ships with lower capacity. Those include Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Seabourn, Viking, Ponant and more. Though not a luxury brand, one of the city’s main clients is Holland America Line, which will send its 1,432-guest Volendam ship there this season.

The port welcomed just over 51,000 cruise guests in 2023. By contrast, its neighbor to the northeast, Quebec City, saw 154,000 passengers . Despite its smaller population, large ships from operators like Norwegian Cruise Line and Cunard Line will visit Quebec City this season (along with smaller vessels).

Jared Feldman, owner of travel agency Jafeldma Travel, added that it’s not just ocean cruise ships that stop in Montreal. “There are river cruises that can get in and out of there as well,” he said.

Gilson noted that the city “could absorb” traffic from bigger ships if not for the bridges. “But on the other hand, the experience for the guest is marvelous because you know they will not be overcrowded by thousands of tourists,” he said.

You can hit the ground walking

The main cruise terminal is close to many of the city’s popular attractions. Old Montreal’s Gothic Revival Notre-Dame Basilica and the Place d’Armes are less than a 10-minute walk away, and numerous restaurants, shops, and museums are also nearby.

I grabbed a prosciutto sandwich at Italian grocery store Dispensa; ate on a bench outside; picked up a coffee at Cafecito and was able to be at the main terminal within 15 minutes or so on foot while taking in views of the water and architectural landmarks like Habitat 67.

There are also multiple close bicycle rental and Metro stations, and waiting taxis (the port works with software platform, Véco Taxi, which gives priority to electric vehicles).

Gilson said more lines are offering overnight stays in Montreal, giving guests more time to explore.

When is the best time for a Montreal cruise?

Montreal’s cruise season begins in May and ends in October, hitting its peak during the last two months of that period. Feldman said fall foliage is a particular draw for passengers.

Montreal often features on Canada and New England itineraries alongside ports such as Boston, Massachusetts and Halifax, Nova Scotia. The port’s cruise calendar can be found by clicking here .

The sailings tend to last around 10 to 14 days. “The distances between the ports in this region can be significant and navigation through areas like the St. Lawrence River and around the Gulf of Maine take time,” he said. Passengers on those sailings are looking for a “more immersive experience.”

Would you spend $14,000 on a cruise?: Here's why these travelers splurged

“Longer itineraries allow for more time in each port and often include scenic cruising days,” he added.

Cruise ships have historically avoided the area when cold sets in, but that could soon change: Ponant’s icebreaking Le Commandant Charcot will offer sailings in St. Lawrence in the winter of 2025. While the ship will not visit Montreal due to its size – though it will stop in Quebec City – Gilson hopes it will mark a shift.
