MAIDEN VOYAGE

A titanic story.

by Sarah Jane ‧ RELEASE DATE: July 31, 2018

A compelling novel that stands both on its own merit and as an addition to the wealth of Titanic literature.

The tragic tale of the Titanic serves as backdrop for a series of smaller familial tragedies.

Three girls board the luxurious ship with no idea that their fates are soon to be irrevocably entwined. Lucy’s hope for this trip is for her parents to show affection for each other, though her father’s dark personality makes this unlikely. Abby, Lucy’s maid, hopes her secrets go undetected long enough for her to start a new life in America. And Isabella hopes to discover why her parents woke her in the night and made her board the Titanic —alone. An entertaining series of mishaps, misunderstandings, and revelations play out on various decks as the well-known climax approaches, this knowledge increasing the tension even further. In her debut novel, Jane liberally sprinkles historic references amid the action, including Marconi’s wireless and the women’s suffrage movement, to fold an authentic educational experience into the story. Jane shines at atmospheric descriptions of the opulence of the ship and the people themselves while also managing to bring her powers of keen observation to the third-class passengers, many of whom were immigrant families full of hope. The characters are white and of European background and straddle several economic classes.

MOMENTOUS EVENTS IN THE LIFE OF A CACTUS

MOMENTOUS EVENTS IN THE LIFE OF A CACTUS

From the life of a cactus series.

by Dusti Bowling ‧ RELEASE DATE: Sept. 17, 2019

Those preparing to “slay the sucktastic beast known as high school” will particularly appreciate this spirited read.

In the sequel to Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus (2017), Aven Green confronts her biggest challenge yet: surviving high school without arms.

Fourteen-year-old Aven has just settled into life at Stagecoach Pass with her adoptive parents when everything changes again. She’s entering high school, which means that 2,300 new kids will stare at her missing arms—and her feet, which do almost everything hands can (except, alas, air quotes). Aven resolves to be “blasé” and field her classmates’ pranks with aplomb, but a humiliating betrayal shakes her self-confidence. Even her friendships feel unsteady. Her friend Connor’s moved away and made a new friend who, like him, has Tourette’s syndrome: a girl. And is Lando, her friend Zion’s popular older brother, being sweet to Aven out of pity—or something more? Bowling keenly depicts the universal awkwardness of adolescence and the particular self-consciousness of navigating a disability. Aven’s “armless-girl problems” realistically grow thornier in this outing, touching on such tough topics as death and aging, but warm, quirky secondary characters lend support. A few preachy epiphanies notwithstanding, Aven’s honest, witty voice shines—whether out-of-reach vending-machine snacks are “taunting” her or she’s nursing heartaches. A subplot exploring Aven’s curiosity about her biological father resolves with a touching twist. Most characters, including Aven, appear white; Zion and Lando are black.

ACROSS THE DESERT

THE BOY AT THE TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN

by John Boyne ‧ RELEASE DATE: June 7, 2016

Chilling, difficult, and definitely not for readers without a solid understanding of the Holocaust despite the relatively...

A young boy grows up in Adolf Hitler’s mountain home in Austria.

Seven-year-old Pierrot Fischer and his frail French mother live in Paris. His German father, a bitter ex-soldier, returned to Germany and died there. Pierrot’s best friend is Anshel Bronstein, a deaf Jewish boy. After his mother dies, he lives in an orphanage, until his aunt Beatrix sends for him to join her at the Berghof mountain retreat in Austria, where she is housekeeper for Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun. It is here that he becomes ever more enthralled with Hitler and grows up, proudly wearing the uniform of the Hitler Youth, treating others with great disdain, basking in his self-importance, and then committing a terrible act of betrayal against his aunt. He witnesses vicious acts against Jews, and he hears firsthand of plans for extermination camps. Yet at war’s end he maintains that he was only a child and didn’t really understand. An epilogue has him returning to Paris, where he finds Anshel and begins a kind of catharsis. Boyne includes real Nazi leaders and historical details in his relentless depiction of Pierrot’s inevitable corruption and self-delusion. As with The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (2006), readers both need to know what Pierrot disingenuously doesn’t and are expected to accept his extreme naiveté, his total lack of awareness and comprehension in spite of what is right in front of him.

“Maiden Voyage: A Titanic Story”

By sarah jane.

maiden voyage book sarah jane

"Maiden Voyage: A Titanic Story" by Sarah Jane

Three remarkable young lives intersect in this thrilling tale, set in April 1912 during the last days of the doomed luxury liner, Titanic.

Isabella James is an unwilling passenger. Her poor but loving parents purchase for her a third-class berth from London to New York—it’s all they can afford. But they will not be coming with her. Instead, they bid farewell to the anguished twelve-year-old girl, handing over their hard-earned savings and an envelope that she is not supposed to open until just before the Titanic docks in New York. Isabella has no idea that the envelope conceals clues to a true identity that she had never imagined—one that could change her life for the better, or possibly for much, much worse.

Lucy Miles, just into her teens, inhabits an entirely different world. She will be traveling first class, with her parents Phillip and Elisabeth. Her father is a hard man. Unbeknownst to his wife and daughter, he also is a fugitive from justice with plans that could ruin the family. Elisabeth, once a vigorous woman who campaigned actively for women’s right to vote, has fallen strangely ill and is now an invalid. As the Titanic enters its last hours before sinking, Lucy, who had hoped the trip would unite her family, will be forced to make a terrible choice between her parents.

Abigail “Abby” O’Rourke is an orphan. She is also a maid for the Miles family, who have given her a second-class berth. Abby’s mother, once a maid to the same family, has recently died under mysterious circumstances. Now all Abby has left in the world is her seven-year-old brother Felix, whom she has smuggled onto the Titanic as a stowaway. When they get to New York, Abby plans to run away with Felix, and make a new life in America.

This is only a dash of the drama that packs Maiden Voyage . As the three girls face their personal challenges, their lives intertwine further and further; and the more they learn about themselves, the stronger they become. At the novel’s action-packed crescendo, with the Titanic striking an iceberg, Isabella, Lucy and Abby must join forces to overcome an unexpected villain. Not only their own lives are at stake, but others they love, too—including Felix and a young crewman, Jasper, who has shown Abby the meaning of hope.

Maiden Voyage succeeds as a thriller and a historical novel. The story runs at a breakneck pace, and its occasional errors and plot holes disappear quickly in the rearview mirror. Young readers will enjoy the historical descriptions of the magnificent Titanic while learning how its opulence barely concealed often cruel class and social divisions. Most important, readers will draw inspiration from the stories of Isabella, Lucy and Abby—pointing to the vital humanity that emerges from study of the past.

Ed Lengel is an author, a speaker, and a storyteller.

Maiden Voyage – Sarah Jane

maiden voyage book sarah jane

Format : paperback ARC

Rating: 1-5  (5 is an excellent or a Starred review)  4

Genre : mystery/historical fiction

What did you like about the book?  Isabella, Lucy and Abby are all aboard the Titanic and their lives are about to become inextricably intertwined in complex ways. Lucy Miles is a wealthy young lady who is tasked with caring for her ill mother while trying to avoid her moody father. Abby is the Miles’ family maid who is still mourning her mother who died unexpectedly and has brought her younger brother Felix as a stowaway. Isabella was unexpectedly put aboard the Titanic by her parents who gave her a note revealing that she is actually a daughter of the Miles family. Drama ensues aboard the Titanic in all its decadence and impending doom.

Readers will enjoy seeing the Titanic from the diverse perspectives of Isabella, Lucy and Abby, all of whom are from different social classes. Historical details are peppered throughout including the advent of the telegram, the suffrage movement in England, etc. Overall, MAIDEN VOYAGE is a quick, enjoyable read with a devious villain. Readers will be rooting for the girls until the triumphant ending.

To whom would you recommend this book?   Students who like mysteries or who are obsessed with the Titanic will gravitate to this book.

Anything you didn’t like about it?  The villain of the story is a bit unbelievable and the story feels rushed at times. I would have appreciated even more background information on the Titanic, as well as a richer backstory to Isabella and Lucy (Abby’s backstory was sufficiently explored).

Who should buy this book?  Most middle schools

Where would you shelve it?  historical fiction

Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles?  No
