Atlanta Travel Guide

atlas travel atlanta

While it's been years since Atlanta became one of the trendiest cities in the U.S., it certainly hasn't left the spotlight. There are countless reasons to plan a visit to what is widely considered the gateway to the southeast, but put simply: the Big Peach is just plain fun . From bustling markets and award-winning restaurants to ample green spaces, shopping centers, fascinating museums, pivotal historical sites, and a lively bar scene, Atlanta is undeniably full of charisma with something for every traveler.

Those interested in sampling local cuisine will be delighted at the impressive number of restaurants worth visiting in the city, from down-home barbeque joints to iconic restaurants and an ever-growing selection of new spots featuring global cuisines. Families will find no shortage of things to do with the kids, from biking through parks to visiting dolphins, sharks, and beluga whales at the famed Georgia Aquarium.

And of course, the great outdoors are just as much of a draw as the urban experiences in ATL. The city boasts lush parks like the BeltLine and Piedmont Park, ideal for long walks and bike rides. Keep in mind that Atlanta is only 90 miles from the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains, so those with time to spare should consider a quick trip north for hiking or backpacking.

Best Time to Go

The shoulder seasons offer the mildest (and least humid) weather. Visit Atlanta in the spring, when the azaleas and dogwoods are in full bloom and parks are lush, or in the fall, when the temperature cools and the trees turn, providing a smoldering backdrop for outdoor concerts and festivals.

Rates can vary widely by room type and season. "We Paid" is intended to give a general sense of price, but you might find considerably different rates for your trip.

When we book, we aim for the optimum season for the destination, but we avoid holidays and major public events, when prices are highest. We generally book a room at one category up from the most basic.

We take advantage of promotional rates, when possible. That means the rate you see above might have included other benefits, such as spa or meal credits.

Atlas Buckhead

  • Not to be outdone by the Henri Matisse piece hanging on the wall, chef Freddy Money approaches each dish with the discerning eye of a sculptor.
  • As you’re nibbling, you can see the culinary team in motion in your peripheral through the open kitchen. If you can score a table somewhere between said kitchen and the sometimes-animated bar, that’s your sweet spot.
  • The initial space feels like a gentleman’s club that has long given up its stuffy ways — this is your introduction to The Tavern at Atlas, unveiled in early 2017. Consider this section as Atlas’ more easygoing side, where you can nibble on sliders, sip on gin martinis and listen to live music every Wednesday and Friday night.
  • Proceed a bit farther into the restaurant and you’ll run into a stylish bar that almost glows from the polished countertops and moody lights behind the bottles.
  • Walk past the glass case of vintage liquors and things open up into a dining room full of brown leather chairs, booths covered in rich green fabrics and a museum-worthy collection of art from names like Pablo Picasso and Francis Bacon.
  • Nibble on bar bites and sip signature cocktails at The Tavern starting at 4 p.m. every day. Atlas serves dinner Sunday through Thursday from 5:30 until 10 p.m., while you can dine until 10:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.
  • The Tavern is certainly more casual than the rest of Atlas, but you still will want to look your best. Nice jeans and a blouse or button down would be appropriate here, while in the dining room, you’ll be more comfortable in something a little more dressed up.
  • Instead of the black angus filet being ruined with too many accoutrements, it only needs crème fraîche potato puree and charred spring onions to do the talking.
  • The same goes for the Atlas burger, a dry-aged and wagyu treat that says it all simply and splendidly with aged cheese and Vidalia onions.
  • The most over-the-top moment at dinner might be the times when the server tempts your table with three or four varieties of fresh bread.
  • A glass case of vintage liquors behind the glass bar is impressive — Macallan, various cognacs in blown-glass bottles, it’s all here.
  • Vino lovers will appreciate a wine list with pours from as close as New York and as distant as Portugal.
  • Still, it’s with the cocktails that the art-appreciating establishment truly shows off its creative side. You’ll find your traditional concoctions, sure, but allow the waiter to tell you about a yet-unnamed drink made with port, ginger beer and house-made bitters.

10 things to know before visiting Atlanta

May 26, 2024 • 6 min read

atlas travel atlanta

Discover the power of activism at the National Center for Civil and Human Rights © wayfarerlife / Shutterstock

My Atlanta story began in 1990, when my parents moved their young family to the metro area so they could pursue new job opportunities. It was an exciting time to grow up in the unofficial capital of the South . Atlanta’s first Black mayor, Maynard Jackson, was in his third and final term; local leaders were working on their successful bid to host the 1996 Summer Olympics; and Freaknik, the biggest college party for historically Black college and university (HBCU) students, had already gained a national reputation.

As an adult I’ve moved away from home a few times, but this city always seems to draw me back in. I find new ways to fall in love with Atlanta every time I move back. If you’re planning a visit, here are a few insider tips to help you navigate our rules, culture and even the streets.

Coca-Cola memorabilia from around the world at the World of Coca-Cola museum in Atlanta.

1. Plan to spend at least three days in the A

It’ll take a first-time visitor at least two days to see all the typical sites, starting with Atlanta’s downtown tourist district – home to the Georgia Aquarium , the World of Coca-Cola museum  and the National Center for Civil and Human Rights , all within the same square. Centennial Olympic Park is a short walk away. The King Historic District is about a five-minute drive from there, but given the legacies of Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King , it needs time to absorb it all. After that, visitors can choose their own adventure by exploring Atlanta's neighborhoods; strolling along the Beltline, a 22-mile multi-use trail; or getting a seat at one of Atlanta’s award-winning restaurants.

Add these top experiences to your Atlanta itinerary .

2. Know the pros and cons of each season

Summertime is filled with incredible festivals and outdoor celebrations, but brace yourself for 90°F (32°C) temperatures and sweltering humidity. Winters are mild, but there’s considerably less to do in Atlanta since Southerners don’t appreciate cold weather of any kind. Spring and fall are magical times in the city, but check with your allergist first. Atlanta gets blanketed in pollen, particularly in the spring thanks to our abundant tree cover, but at least we can all admire the blooming dogwood trees while we sneeze.

3. Prepare to see and be seen in Atlanta

Atlanta doesn’t believe partying should be limited to the night. Day parties and restaurants with a lounge atmosphere – a term one website aptly called the clubstaurant – are plentiful. This style may be strange to some visitors. The popular TikTok food critic Keith Lee was shocked by the lack of hospitality at some of these businesses. But to enjoy them like a local, go for the vibes, not for traditional restaurant service.

4. Sunday booze sales can be confusing

Southern cities have a complicated relationship with alcohol sales on Sunday, and Atlanta is no different. It can be tough to keep track of the regulations, especially when ordinances change from county to county. If you’re in the city limits of Atlanta, you can order a Sunday morning mimosa or bloody mary at brunch beginning at 11am. If you’re outside of Atlanta/Fulton County, be aware that the local laws may be different.

5. Getting around without a car is challenging

MARTA is Atlanta’s public transportation system, and it’s generally reliable and safe. Many people use the train’s red and yellow lines to get to and from the airport, but the train system isn’t robust enough to take locals or visitors to all of the area’s best offerings, which are sprawled across a large metro area. Renting a car or using rideshare apps are your best options. Local politicians haven’t managed to keep up with infrastructure to support the city’s rapidly growing population, so spontaneous traffic jams occur regularly. Make sure you plan ahead for any timed entries.

Navigate like a local with these tips for getting around .

6. Atlanta has all the Peachtree Streets

Whoever was in charge of naming streets in Atlanta seemed to run out of ideas. You’ll notice a lot of roads are named after peach trees. On one hand, it’s cute because Georgia is known as the peach state, but the charm tends to wear off quickly. At last count, 71 roads in Atlanta have Peachtree in the name. It can get confusing quickly, so pay attention to the details to see if you’re looking for Peachtree Street, Road, or Way.

7. Fill your soul with local cuisine

You can’t come to the South without filling up on soul food, and Atlanta has some iconic options for you. Look out for local favorites such as shrimp and grits, and fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese. Then try new classics like lemon pepper wings. For eclectic international offerings, try the food hall at Ponce City Market, Buford Highway Farmers Market or East Atlanta Village.

Other states may disagree, but here, we embrace the diner food chain Waffle House. It was founded in Avondale Estates, a suburb of Atlanta, after all. Most people have their hash brown order memorized, whether it’s smothered (with sautéed onions), covered (in melted cheese), diced (with chopped tomatoes) or capped (with mushrooms).

8. Saying Hotlanta will get you the side eye

Yes, we know Atlanta gets hot in the summertime, and yes, we also know our city is poppin’ with fun things to do all year long. But neither of those truths would ever warrant someone calling the city Hotlanta. The nickname may have been acceptable when it was first coined in the 20th century, but today it will instantly label you as an outsider. Casual nicknames locals prefer are “the A,” and “A-T-L.” If you’re looking for more high-brow nicknames, The Gate City and the City in a Forest also apply, but are not typically used in casual conversation.

9. Black culture is intrinsically connected to Atlanta

Atlanta has the second largest population of Black Americans in the US , behind New York City. But that’s not the only reason why the Black community sees Atlanta as a central city for the culture. It's also home to four HBCUs and Tyler Perry Studios, and has deep roots in the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s. Atlanta has remained a major hub for hip hop, from early pioneers such as Frank Ski and Kilo Ali and legends like OutKast, Ludacris and T.I. to fresh talents including Two Chains, Gucci, Future and 21 Savage.

People carry large balloon letters that spell out "Proud" as they walk in the annual pride parade in Atlanta, Georgia (2023)

10. Atlanta embraces our LGBTQ+ community

Atlanta is also a hub for the Black queer community, and has been for at least two decades. Every Labor Day weekend the community comes together to celebrate Atlanta Black Pride . But there are opportunities to celebrate all year long, whether it’s during Atlanta Pride in October, or at any of the city’s gay bars and clubs, including the established favorites, Bulldogs and My Sister’s Room .

Visiting Atlanta: A business traveler’s guide to Georgia’s capital city

May 29, 2024

Home to 71 different streets that bear the name “Peachtree,” Atlanta, Georgia, is a bustling city and premier destination for business travelers. Known for its deep and complex history, diverse culture, and vibrant economy, Atlanta has much to offer business and leisure travelers. Our resident “ATLien” Shemika Britt contributed to this Atlanta city guide.

atlas travel atlanta

Atlanta led the list of the most visited domestic cities for business travel in our Cities & Trends 2023 United States edition . It’s home to many Fortune 500 companies, including Delta Air Lines and Coca-Cola. And it’s also the home of North American headquarters for BCD Travel. Atlanta is recognized as the city with the fastest growth in people starting a new business. Georgia’s capital city is a major economic hub with a diverse range of industries, including aerospace, finance, technology, film and entertainment, and logistics and transportation.

Meet BCD Travel at GBTA 2024, July 22-24 in Atlanta

Atlanta will be the host city for the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) Convention 2024 at the Georgia World Congress Center. The conference is expected to attract thousands of professionals from the business travel sector, including travel managers, service providers, and industry experts. Will you be at the show?

Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL)

Located about 10 miles south of downtown Atlanta, Hartsfield-Jackson is the world’s busiest airport, serving approximately 105 million passengers last year. Within the airport, travelers can access multiple lounges, business centers, dining options, and shopping outlets. Atlanta’s public transportation system, Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) offers a direct train connection to the airport, making it easily accessible from various parts of the city. The Airport Station recently reopened after a six-week closure for renovations.

atlas travel atlanta

Shemika: Calling ATL the world’s busiest airport isn’t just boasting. We have two terminals and seven concourses. Check out the airport app or website to get a sense of the layout before your first visit. Allow yourself plenty of time to get where you need to go. Some say get to ATL two hours before a domestic flight, I’d go with three. Travelers with CLEAR and TSA PreCheck® may get through the lines a little faster. People movers and the plane train will help shuttle you to your gate.

Getting around Atlanta

MARTA is a sustainable way to navigate the city. Trains run through key business districts but you may have to connect to a bus to reach your final destination. A single ride costs $2.50, with options for multi-day passes. Trains and buses run on frequent schedules during peak hours, with slightly reduced frequency late at night and on weekends. Take note of operating hours. Trains run from 4:45 a.m. – 1 p.m. weekdays and 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. weekends. Buses operate 5 a.m. – 1 a.m. during the week and 5:30 a.m. – 12:30 a.m. on weekends.

Taxis and rideshare services like Uber and Lyft are widely available in Atlanta. And, they’re generally affordable, with rates varying depending on distance and demand.

Planning to rent a car? You can pick one up at the airport and at multiple points around the city. Reserve cars in advance and in line with your corporate travel policy. Rental cars get booked up quickly, especially during peak seasons or major events. Before you hop behind the wheel, take a look at a map and familiarize yourself with Atlanta’s traffic patterns and road regulations. GPS can be incredibly helpful for navigating the city’s sprawling roadways.

Shemika: It may feel like rush hour never ends in Atlanta. But typically it starts before 7 a.m. and lasts until about 9 a.m. Traffic starts to pick up again at 4 p.m. and continues until 7 p.m. (or later). Build time and patience into your commute. You might need it.

There’s a couple of highways you need to know about, if you’re planning to drive. Interstate 285, also known as the Perimeter or Inside the Perimeter (ITP), is a beltway that circles Atlanta. Interstates 75 and 85 are major highways that intersect in the city. We call them the Downtown Connector. I-75 and I-85 form a north-south corridor through the city. I-75 primarily runs from north to south, connecting cities like Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Macon, Georgia, while I-85 runs northeast to southwest, connecting cities like Charlotte, North Carolina, and Montgomery, Alabama.

And yes, we do have 71 variations of Peachtree streets, roads and parkways. So, do yourself a favor and doublecheck all addresses.

Dining, entertainment & culture in Atlanta

When exploring dining and entertainment options in Atlanta, travelers can stay in the city center or venture out for foodie experiences and hotspots. Here are a couple of areas to check out:

The Atlanta Beltline: The 22-mile long Beltline is a transformative urban redevelopment project that has become a hub of activity, culture, and recreation. It has multi-use trails perfect for walking, jogging, biking, or skating. You can rent scooters and e-bikes at nearly every corner. One of the highlights of the BeltLine is its ever-evolving collection of public art. Keep your eyes peeled for colorful murals, sculptures, tiny art and installations created by local and international artists. It is lined with a variety of eateries, cafes, and food stalls offering delicious bites and refreshing drinks.

Shemika : If I had a couple of hours to wander along the BeltLine, I’d rent a scooter and make my way to TWO urban licks for the salmon chips. Then head over to the James Room for a cool experience. At first glance, it appears to be a quaint café. A host will lead you through a set of mysterious doors and into a moody, soulful speakeasy serving craft cocktails and the absolute best music playlist. End your Beltline visit with a stroll at sunset and watch the city skyline glow .

Decatur: Explore the charming suburb of Decatur, known for its eclectic dining scene. Stroll along the streets of Decatur Square to find a variety of restaurants, cafes, and bars offering everything from Southern comfort food to international cuisine. Don’t miss out on local favorites like Kimball House for oysters or Brick Store Pub for craft beer enthusiasts.

Midtown: Midtown Atlanta is home to a mix of residences, hotels, upscale dining establishments, trendy eateries, and lively entertainment venues. Indulge in culinary delights at establishments like Empire State South for modern Southern cuisine or The Vortex Bar & Grill for legendary burgers and quirky ambiance. Politan Row , a food hall in Midtown Atlanta’s Colony Square, features 12 food options under one roof. Dine inside the common area in the upscale food court or outside in the green space.

Alpharetta: Venture to Alpharetta, a suburb north of Atlanta, for a taste of suburban charm and culinary delights. Explore the Avalon , a mixed-use development offering a plethora of dining options ranging from farm-to-table restaurants to gourmet food halls. Don’t miss Jekyll Brewing or Butcher & Brew for craft beer and artisanal bites.

Buford Highway: From authentic Korean BBQ and Vietnamese pho to Latin American street food and Chinese dim sum, Buford Highway offers a culinary journey around the world. Be sure to explore Plaza Fiesta for a vibrant Latin American shopping and dining experience.

Shemika: My absolute favorite place to eat is Surin of Thailand in the quirky Virginia-Highland neighborhood, just minutes from the heart of the city. It’s tiny and the décor is kind of unremarkable, but hear me out. Golden walls and tealights everywhere make it a vibe. I’ve never have a bad meal there. If you’re into craft drinks, ask for the Ladies Man. It’s not on the menu, but it’s amazing. After dinner, you can walk a few blocks in either direction to window shop at boutiques or people watch at any of the multiple nearby bars.

When it comes to entertainment, Atlanta boasts several iconic venues and attractions:

Fox Theatre: Immerse yourself in the rich history and grandeur of the Fox Theatre , a historic landmark and performing arts venue in Midtown Atlanta. Catch a Broadway show, concert, or classic film screening in this opulent Moorish-style theater.

Roxy : Experience live music and entertainment at The Roxy , a popular concert venue located at The Battery Atlanta near Truist Park. Whether you’re into rock, pop, or country music, The Roxy offers a dynamic lineup of performances in an intimate setting.

Truist Park: Catch a baseball game at Truist Park, home of the Atlanta Braves, and indulge in a culinary adventure at The Battery. Explore a diverse selection of dining options, including upscale restaurants, casual eateries, and sports bars, all within walking distance of the ballpark.

Shemika: For lessons and a deeper appreciation into the city’s culture, plan time at the Atlanta History Center , Fernbank Museum of Natural History (there are dinosaurs!), Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park , Michael C. Carlos Museum , or the High Museum of Art .

Co-Working in Atlanta

When you need a break from the hotel room or office, Atlanta offers several excellent coworking spaces and cafes:

  • WeWork (Colony Square): Located in Midtown, offering a vibrant environment with all necessary amenities.
  • Spaces (Midtown East): A stylish coworking space with flexible options and a collaborative atmosphere.
  • Roam (Buckhead): Known for its professional setting and convenient location near upscale dining and shopping.
  • Chattahoochee Coffee Company : For a more relaxed atmosphere, this coffee shop provides a scenic view of the Chattahoochee River and a quiet spot to work.

For a lot of people, buying car insurance is like buying sliced bread. It’s not the most exciting purchase, and the options all seem similar. So thrifty shoppers might simply reach for the cheapest thing on the shelf. But like cheap bread, cheap car insurance may leave you wishing you spent a little more on quality.

“The cheapest is not always the best,” warns Jessica McNally, an agency owner with Goosehead Insurance in Dallas. That’s because there are lots of factors that make up a car insurance company. And while price is one of them, it’s best to look at the bigger picture.

Here’s what to look for when picking the best car insurance company.

1. Choose a financially stable company

The best car insurance companies have plenty of money on hand to pay for customers’ claims. It’s important to check an insurer’s financial stability before buying a policy, especially if it’s a smaller insurer you’ve never heard of.

There are several independent agencies that evaluate the financial strength of insurance companies. One example is A.M. Best. You can use its online search tool to find an insurer’s financial strength rating. Companies with a rating of A or higher are considered to have an excellent ability to pay out customer claims.

2. Check customer satisfaction ratings and reviews

Not every insurer is customer-first. That’s why it’s important to research the customer satisfaction of insurers you’re considering.

You can turn to surveys from companies like J.D. Power to find insurers with the best customer satisfaction scores [0] J.D. Power . Auto Insurance Customer Satisfaction Plummets as Rates Continue to Surge, J.D. Power Finds . Accessed May 21, 2024. View all sources . Or, if you don’t mind doing a little detective work, you can compare customer complaints against insurers by using the National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ website . But take other people’s emotionally charged comments about companies or agents you might read online with a grain of salt, McNally advises.

3. Look for convenience

A great auto insurer should offer multiple ways to manage a policy. For example, some insurers allow customers to use a mobile app to file and track claims. But it’s hard to tell how simple it’ll be to file a claim or perform other essential tasks, like paying your premium, before becoming a customer.

Some telltale signs that an insurer will be easy to work with are high mobile app ratings, flexible customer service hours and an easy-to-use website with helpful content. Consider asking a company representative to walk you through the claims process to learn what you’ll need to do if you have to file a claim. And pay attention to how the company communicates with you. "If they don't properly communicate, well, that's a warning sign," says Michael DeLong, a research and advocacy associate for the nonprofit Consumer Federation of America.

4. Pick an affordable company

Car insurance premiums are stretching to record-breaking heights [0] U.S. BUREAU OF LABOR STATISTICS . Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) . Accessed May 21, 2024. View all sources , and almost half of U.S. consumers shopped for a new car insurance policy in the past year, according to an April 2024 report by J.D. Power [0] J.D. Power . Half of Auto Insurance Customers Currently Shopping for New Policies, J.D. Power Finds . Accessed May 21, 2024. View all sources . The best car insurance companies offer competitive rates and a variety of potential discounts.

It’s not hard to get car insurance quotes online from many companies. Make sure you compare the same coverage options throughout the quote-gathering process. And don’t forget to look for car insurance discounts, like breaks for being a good driver, paying your premium in full or driving a new car.

More tips to find the best car insurance

When shopping for the best car insurance, keep the following tips in mind.

Assess your needs. Before buying car insurance, take a moment to reflect on what’s important to you and your family. For example, maybe you prioritize affordability and a well-polished mobile app, but don’t need accident forgiveness .

Consider small insurers. There are lots of small insurance companies you’ve probably never heard of. These regional insurers may provide lower rates and better customer service than the big companies you see advertised on TV.

Work with an independent agent. While it may be easy to get quotes yourself, independent car insurance agents and brokers can streamline the process. These experts vet companies and compile quotes from small and large insurers on your behalf. Independent agents and brokers can especially come in handy if you have a less-than-perfect driving record and can’t find insurance on your own.

Do your research. Search online for recent mentions of a company in the news before buying a policy, recommends DeLong. If you find a company has lots of recent lawsuits against it, you may want to think twice about signing on the dotted line. “And if they've had to pay out settlements, that's an even bigger red flag,” DeLong says.

Shop around once a year. Make a practice of shopping for car insurance every year — especially if price is important to you. Insurers adjust car insurance rates regularly, so what might have been the most affordable option last year may no longer be a bargain.

Memorial Day 2024: Busy holiday travel surge begins at Atlanta airport

ATLANTA - The summer travel season is getting underway and air travel officials say it’s going to be the busiest one since before the pandemic.

According to TSA, officials are expecting an increase of more than 6% in travelers compared to this time in 2023.

Thursday was one of the busiest travel days at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, with thousands of people getting a head start on their holiday weekend travel.

According to the FAA, Thursday is expected to have the biggest flight surge with 53,000 scheduled flights nationwide. Friday will be the busiest day in Atlanta, where officials expect more than 100,000 passengers to come through Hartsfield-Jackson.

Atlanta airport officials say they are expecting more than 119,000 more travelers than last year.

Leigh Ann Paugh said her family booked an early flight to try and beat the holiday rush.

"We’re going to see our son graduate from the Naval Academy in Annapolis. We just wanted to make sure it wasn't a problem with our travel plans," she said.

Atlanta airport officials have plans to make sure everything runs smoothly. They added more officers and additional screening lanes starting as early as 3 a.m. to help make sure you get through security in less than 30 minutes, and less than 10 minutes if you have pre-check.

"I'm glad I have TSA Pre-Check. I was quite shocked when I arrived to see so many people here on a Thursday at 4 a.m.," one traveler said.

The best thing you can do is get to the airport at least two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight.
