Trek Madone 4.5 Compact review

Affordable and ideal for longer rides

Guy Kesteven

2014 trek madone 4.5

Trek's multi Tour de France winning Madone family has been around for years, and the 4.5 is the most affordable member for 2010. it does mean you get Oriental TCT carbon, rather than the pricier US-built OCLV carbon of the 5 and 6 family bikes, but it’s the overall ride, not the origin, that matters here.

Ride & handling: Agile and confident handling complements friendly overall feel

While Trek don’t do a specific sportive bike, Madones have always been a popular choice among high-mileage riders, and we can see why. It’s immediately obvious this bike is smooth from fork to far end, sitting on the road quietly over rough sections that rattled many price rivals.

Despite sharp and snappy-looking angles on paper, it’s got a neutral stability too, letting us ride no-handed without worry when fishing energy bars out of back pockets.

It’s not just the easy mid-picnic handling that encourages you to put those extra miles in either. This bike just melts away underneath you, barely registering the tactical tarmac conditions that are a real issue on stiffer bikes.

The Bontrager tyres are usefully smooth rolling without being worryingly slippery in wet corners. The short stem makes exploring the traction limits fun on descents, with an agile twitchy feel through the steering when you’re flicking between manhole covers and potholes, or changing lines mid-corner.

Stability and the stiffness of the front end means this never develops into anything nasty on long, fast descents though, with only the soft brakes acting as a mental parachute.

While it’s a great smooth, ‘go the distance’ choice for longer rides, the pliable smoothness of the Trek can work against it as workload goes up. Its buoyant, floated ride when you’re tapping out a tempo develops into a real bounce as you press the pedals harder.

This results in a definite rubber-chain effect if you’re fighting the hill. The compact chainset ratios mean you can spin rather than stomp most of the time though, and the light wheels hold speed towards summits well too.

Chassis: Smooth and comfy frameset, but weight limits upgrade potential

At 1,250g the frame isn't the lightest at this price, but the reasonably light tapered alloy steerer fork puts it back into the right ball park. The extended hourglass profile E2 head tube puts stiffness and accuracy into the steering.

The triangular top tube gets a flattened centre section to feed some comfort back in, and while the down tube is broad, it’s also relatively shallow to suck out some road sting. The seat tube is single diameter, which means a conventional front mech fits fine.

The bottom bracket is an external screw-in rather than oversize push-fit type. Mid-size multi-section rear stays meet at simple alloy dropouts, with a scalloped wishbone section morphing smoothly into the seat tube/top tube area.

The polished seat collar matches the similar-finish Shimano 105 gear and you get twin bottle cage mounts. A metal plate protects the chainstays if you drop the chain off the back, and there’s even a socket for Trek’s Duotrap computer speed and cadence sensor unit.

The unusual crossover brake cable routing under the top tube gives a clean look with a UK-style left-hand front brake. With no fewer than seven sizes they'll fit most riders, although you have to hop up to the Madone 4.7 (£1,900) to get Women's Specific Design versions.

Equipment: Bontrager kit shaves weight and Shimano transmission performs well

Like most bikes at this price, transmission is predominantly Shimano 105 with a similar-quality FC600 compact chainset. A 27-tooth big sprocket on the cassette means a proper crawler gear for climbs, with the option of a triple chainset.

Shimano Tiagra brake callipers feel soft, but the combined STI levers and shifters are 105, and fitting cartridge brake pads will make a big difference to feedback. Gear adjusters next to the levers make in-flight tweaking easy. The rest of the bike is a selection of Trek’s Bontrager house-brand kit.

Saddle and seatpost kept everyone happy, while the well-shaped handlebars sit on a big stack of carbon headset spacers for easy adjustment. The Bontrager kit – particularly the wheels – is light enough to offset the extra frameset mass and put the Trek back into contention on weight.

Trek has a long and illustrious history producing high quality, race winning, performance framesets and bikes.

Their latest incarnation, the Madone 4.5 is part of the 4 Series range. Featuring a H2 geometry, a nice balance between an outright race position and a more relaxed one. The H2 geometry, makes it one of the most high versatile road bikes on the market. A high quality package featuring Shimano Ultegra and FSA components, as well as Bontrager finishing kit and wheels.

Trek has a long and illustrious history producing high quality, race winning, performance framesets and bikes. Their latest incarnation, the Trek Madone 4.5 is part of the 4 Series range.

Used by many professional athletes as well as teams such as Trek Factory Racing and MTN Qhubeka, the Madone range are renowned for being lightweight, tough and offer and comfortable yet stiff ride.

400 Series OCLV carbon is the basis for the frame, lightweight with the Optimum Compaction Low Void manufacture process resulting in a very high quality finish to the frame.

Trek offer a range of geometries, the Madone 4.5 uses the H2 fit, providing a higher headtube for added comfort, yet still offering an aggressive and race-focused position. Many professional cyclists looking for outright race performance and all day comfort favour the H2 geometry.

The frameset features performance cable routing. This keeps the cables out of sight, enhancing aerodynamics, improving gear shifting and brake performance, whilst allowing easy access to install and maintain cables.

What really makes the Madone 4.5 Road Bike stand out from others is the brakeless seatstays, reducing weight and creating a more aerodynamic profile.

This is one fast bike, made even quicker with the headtube designed using KVF, Kammtail Virtual Foil shaping. This technology has also been used in the fork.

KVF has been extensively developed so it bends in response to the angle of the typical crosswind, this allows the frame to slice through and be more stable in strong winds.

The added aerodynamic legs, on the fork, minimises drag and results in a very light and laterally stiff set of forks, perfect for pin sharp handling.

E2 asymmetric design on the headtube and fork dampens road vibrations and increases lateral stiffness, resulting in direct power transfer.

A fantastic package, Trek has included Bontrager handlebars, stem and a carbon fibre seatpost, for added comfort and a lightweight setup.

Bontrager Race Tubeless Ready wheels offer bulletproof reliability, roll incredibly well and are lightweight. Grip and durability is catered for with Bontrager R2 Hard-Case Lite tyres.

Shimano Ultegra is one of Shimano’s top road groupsets. The latest 11-speed system provides seamless, smooth and rapid shifting and durability.

An FSA Gossamer compact crankset has been added, providing the rider with plenty of options whether climbing a mountain or getting pushed along by a huge tailwind.

The BB90 bottom bracket system is the widest available on a road bike and provides a light and stiff basis for ultimate power transfer to the pedals.

Finishing touches include a 3S integrated chain keeper and DuoTrap compatibility. This innovative computer system provides aerodynamic, discrete and reliable speed, distance and cadence readings when paired up to an ANT enabled device.

Available in a range of sizes and an eye-catching placid blue and crystal white colour scheme.

Trek madone 3rd party reviews ,   trek madone size chart, 2022 trek madone review - a tpc rider's quick take.

  • Aero masterclass
  • Trek engineers locked themselves in a wind tunnel with this bike. Every curve, edge, and component shouts aerodynamics. From the IsoFlow tech to the one-piece aero bar and stem this bike is designed for slicing through air.
  • IsoFlow Comfort
  • One of the standout features of the Madone is Trek’s IsoFlow technology, which makes for a forgiving ride, especially on longer epics. IsoFlow helps the seatmast flex, soaking up road vibrations. It’s rare for a speed-focused road bike to excel in comfort, yet here we are.
  • Integrated everything
  • In the Madone, the term "fully integrated" is taken to new heights. From the cables to the cockpit, everything is tucked away, contributing not just to aerodynamics but also to a jaw-dropping aesthetic.
  • Speed and beauty come at a cost. The Madone’s premium price could act as a barrier for many. It's a serious investment, and budget-friendly aero options are out there.
  • Price: $7,999 (SLR 6)
  • Weight woes
  • Despite the carbon fiber frame and components, the Madone isn't a featherweight in its category. It's a solid build, but riders focused on climbing might find it a tad on the heavier side.
  • Weight: 17lbs (56cm)
  • Versatility questions
  • While the Madone excels on flat terrain and downhill blasts, it's not the most versatile option for a wide range of riding conditions. Climbers and those who encounter varying terrain may find it limiting.

Trek Madone 4 road bike series

Trek includes its 4 series road range in the popular custom programme, Project One.

2014 trek madone 4.5

Trek’s ever-popular 4 Series continues as a three-bike range for 2014, with the brand including this model in its popular custom programme, Project One.

Using 400 Series OCLV (Optimum Compaction, Low Void carbon manufacturing process), the chassis is the first in the Wisconsin firm’s Madone range to use Kamm Tail technology. Derived from the motor industry, Kamm Tail aerodynamics feature on the frame and forks, sharing this design with higher-spec Madone models and, specifically, the Speed Concept time trial series machines.

Using a flattened profile on the rear of the down tube makes for a stiffer tube — it also tricks the wind into acting as though there’s a full foil. This creates a virtual tail that hugely reduces wind resistance and gives excellent crosswind performance. Better still, the Kamm Tail’s profile complies with the UCI’s 3:1 ratio, but its wind-tricking performance is equivalent to that of a 5:1 aerofoil.

It’s not just about the profiling of the tubes; the 4 Series also carries Trek’s proprietary E2 head tube that is wider side-to-side than front-to-back, with a wide 1.5in lower and 1-1/8in upper headset bearing to increase cornering performance. BB90 is also present; the 90mm-wide exclusive bottom bracket system is claimed to be one of the stiffest on the market.

Not only does the 4 Series offer most of the performance of its more costly siblings, it has some hidden talents. Vanishing mudguard mounts on the rear triangle add utilitarian potential.

The 4.5 model is all but sold out for the year, leaving just the 4.7 and 4.9 available off the peg. At £2,200, the 4.7 comes with a full Ultegra 6800 groupset, Bontrager componentry and tubeless-ready Bontrager Race TLR wheels to give a competitive package.

Should this range tickle your fancy but you want something a little special, Project One is available. We designed a 4 Series specced similarly to the 4.7 but with a customised colour. Coming out at a premium £2,789.99, this is a hefty upcharge but for a personalised, one-of-a-kind bike, it’ll appeal to those who want to stand out.
