Tiger’s 40 Biggest Moments: No. 6 – Completing the Tiger Slam at 2001 Masters

2001 pga tour championship

Over 40 days, GOLF.com is rolling out Tiger Woods’ 40 biggest moments. Our ranking started on Nov. 21 and will culminate on Dec. 30, which is Tiger’s 40th birthday. That’s 40 Tiger moments. In 40 days. Ranked. Click here to learn more about our list.

There were plenty of nicknames for a Grand Slam that was or wasn’t a Grand Slam, depending on whether you were a golf traditionalist who lived by the calendar or simply a golf fan who marveled at four major championship wins in a row.

The losers in the naming derby included Phi Slamma Granda, Thai Slamma Granda, Fiscal-Year Slam, Major Sweep and, courtesy of legendary golf scribe Dan Jenkins, the Mulligan Slam (since Tiger needed a second try at the Masters to complete this Slam) and the Woods Wins Quartet, a bridge (and a pun) too far.

The phrase “Tiger Slam” eventually stuck, and it was a fitting way to describe the unthinkable. When Tiger Woods won the 2001 Masters , he completed an unparalleled run through golf’s greatest championships. For the next two months, all four of golf’s major trophies would sit on Tiger’s mantel.

Woods did what Jack Nicklaus and Ben Hogan and all the rest couldn’t. Only Bobby Jones had ever won a Grand Slam and his was the Opens—the U.S. and British—and the Amateurs—the U.S. and British. No one had ever won four professional majors in a row. Only Hogan and Nicklaus had won three straight, and Jack’s, by the way, were not in the same calendar year, either.

In 2001, it seemed as if Tiger’s winning streak might go on indefinitely. He had no real rival. The game’s other top players were Phil Mickelson, who still hadn’t won a major; David Duval, who still hadn’t won a major; and Vijay Singh, who put the green jacket on the Tiger Slam champion but didn’t have the skill on the greens to sustain any real challenge.

Duval finished second at this historic Masters, two shots behind Woods, whose winning score of 16 under par was only two strokes off the tournament record he had set in 1997. Mickelson was three back.

Mickelson and Duval saw their hopes fade Sunday with costly errors at the par-3 16th. Duval flew it over the green and made bogey. Mickelson later said he pulled his 7-iron shot, but some observers thought he simply was unable or unwilling to go against his natural left-to-right shot shape and that ball spin was what caused his shot to stay up on the slope above the back-left pin location. A right-to-left shot, not in Phil’s repertoire, almost certainly would have spun down to the hole. Phil’s first putt raced past the cup and he three-putted for a bogey.

Woods birdied the 18th hole to cap a remarkable run and the Grand-Tiger-Mulligan Slam, whatever you wanted to call it.

“To win four in succession, that’s hard to believe,” Woods said. “On top of that, you’ve got to have some luck.”

It gave Tiger six major titles, tying Nick Faldo and Lee Trevino for 11th place on the all-time major championship list.

CBS announcer Jim Nantz made the call as Tiger finished, and he kept the terminology bland: “There it is! As good as it gets! Tiger has his Slam!”

At the Masters award ceremony, Augusta National chairman Hootie Johnson summed it up best while, like Nantz, deftly avoiding any naming controversy. “We have witnessed the greatest golfing feat of our time,” Johnson said.

That was one thing we could all agree on.

Check back on GOLF.com every day until Tiger’s birthday on Dec. 30 for a new moment in our  TIGER@40 countdown.

Back in St. Louis 20 Years Later, 9/11 Remains a Gut-Wrenching Memory for Players

Back in St. Louis 20 Years Later, 9/11 Remains a Gut-Wrenching Memory for Players

  • Author: Dan O'Neill

PGA Tour Champions players vividly recall how the tragically surreal day—and week—unfolded at the 2001 WGC-American Express Championship.

2001 pga tour championship

ST. LOUIS — The morning was a postcard, blues skies above, temperatures in the high 60s, as good as it gets on Sept. 11 in St. Louis. The emerald lawns at Bellerive Country Club were in remarkable shape. Golf fans were pouring through the gates, while many players were still on their way to the 2001 WGC-American Express Championship. The stage was set; the show was about to begin.

Mark Calcavecchia was on the 11th fairway with Tiger Woods , playing Tuesday morning practice holes on the back nine. The clock was just about to strike 8 a.m. local time when a security official alerted the two players about something happening—a plane had slammed into one of the towers at the World Trade Center. The details were sketchy, the implications were uncertain, and so they played on.

They got one hole further when they heard a second plane had hit. Like everyone, they began to realize the circumstances were something more than a tragic accident. Disturbing news kept coming, with each additional hole. The Pentagon was hit, the buildings collapsed, the horror was real.

“We were like, ‘Oh my God,'” Calcavecchia recalled. “Then I'm walking up 18 fairway, we were only going to play nine anyway, and I'm standing next to Tiger Woods. And it dawned on me, I thought, ‘This might not be the smartest thing to do—standing right next to the world's most famous athlete, right?’ Holy cow.

“Then we got in and everybody was just sitting in the locker room with their jaw hanging down, just looking at the TV and just, you know, it was terrible.”

As fate has it, 20 years later, Calcavecchia and others at Bellerive on that day are back in St. Louis, competing in the PGA Tour Champions Ascension Charity Classic at Norwood Hills Country Club.

And as Kenny Perry acknowledged, it’s a bit surreal.

“They always say you remember the place you are when a tragedy happens,” Perry said. “I'll always tell everybody, ‘I was at Bellerive on 9/11, I was on the porch of the clubhouse walking in when it happened.’

“It’s that clear to me. I had just flown in and had gotten my courtesy car and had driven to the club. I was walking up the steps in the clubhouse at Bellerive and the guy said, ‘Did you hear what happened?’ And I said no.

“I just remember they had a TV inside the door there, and I just sat there for hours watching the recap of the planes hitting the towers. Then everything went crazy.”

Bernhard Langer was walking through the clubhouse, on his way to the driving range that Tuesday morning. He never made it.

“I'll never forget,” Langer said. “Somebody inside a room said, ‘Wow, you've got to see this, this can't be right, there's planes crashing into buildings.’ I'm going, ‘No way,’ so I stopped and went in there and watched some on TV what was unfolding.

“It didn't look real, it didn't seem real and we couldn’t … I couldn't grasp my head around how anybody would kill themselves to fly a plane into a building and kill thousands of others, but it was true. And then there was the rumor of more planes and all that, so it was a terrible day.

“I wish I could forget it, but it's ingrained in my brain. As I said, I think it's one of the darkest days and I hope it will never happen again.”

Norwood Hills is located some 3 ½ miles northeast of Bellerive, in a different part of town. But South African Ernie Els doesn’t need reminding of where he was on 9/11, and where he is now.

“I'm staying in the same hotel as in 2001,” Els said. “I came in (Wednesday), went to the same hotel 20 years later, so it's very eerie."

As things unfolded that morning, the response was uncertain. Initially, the PGA Tour announced the tournament would be postponed one day, with 36 holes to be conducted on Friday, followed by standard rounds on Saturday and Sunday. By Wednesday morning, sporting events around the country were canceled, and PGA Tour head Tim Finchem faced a wrenching decision.

Months of preparation had put everything in place, including Woods, who won the Masters earlier that year to complete a “Tiger Slam,” who was the biggest star on the planet, who was playing in St. Louis for the first time. The sponsorship packages were sold, the galleries were bulging, the event was putting St. Louis back on the championship golf map. Moreover, a PGA Tour-sanctioned tournament had not been canceled since 1949, when rain washed out the Colonial NIT.

But the morning after Sept. 11, 2001, it was all irrelevant. The event was canceled. Todd Rhinehart, a Florida resident, had spent the previous 8 ½ months of his life in St. Louis, laying the groundwork at Bellerive. But the tournament director had no trouble understanding an unshakeable rationale for pulling the plug.

“We can sit here in St. Louis, in this beautiful weather, on this beautiful golf course,” Rhinehart said, “while in New York right now, they are using the American Express building for a morgue.”

Once the WGC-American Express Championship was canceled the following day, players, like Mark Calcavecchia, had to figure out how to return home.

Once the WGC-American Express Championship was canceled the following day, players, like Mark Calcavecchia, had to figure out how to return home.

When the championship stood down, the players faced another difficult situation—how to get home. Air traffic had been grounded throughout the country. Rental cars were like lost treasure.

For Woods, having a sponsorship deal with Buick—which also sponsored the championship—didn’t hurt. He was able to secure his courtesy car and drive 17 hours home to Orlando. Years later, he recalled, “It was a very surreal time for myself on that drive and a lot of reflecting.”

Langer also lucked out. He teamed up with golf writer Tim Rosaforte to share a car to South Florida. One moment, he was headed to the driving range, the next … “We were heading home, and couldn't figure out where the world was going,” he said.

Other players were not as fortunate. Several Europeans had no way of getting home, and could be found on the range at Bellerive days later, trying to stay sharp.

Perry’s home in Franklin, Ky., is 300 miles southeast of St. Louis. Relatively speaking, that’s a short drive. But it’s a long walk. And after he checked out of his hotel, returned his courtesy car and fired blanks on finding a rental, Perry wasn’t sure which he would be doing.

“I'll never forget, I was stuck,” he said. “I didn't have a car to get home to Kentucky, and thank goodness my caddie had driven here. He lives in Denver, but he drove me all the way back to Franklin, Ky. It's not that far from here. But still, four hours would be eight hours for him. Because then he had to head back to Denver.”

As for Calcavecchia, he was among the fortunate few to land a rental car on Wednesday evening. He hopped in his Pontiac Grand Am, put the pedal to the metal and covered the 1,600 miles home to Phoenix in 19 hours.

While the miles flew by, the hours gave Calcavecchia an opportunity to process what had taken place. “I was on my phone a lot,” he said. “But mainly, just listening to music and just still thinking about it.

“I mean, you still see the planes flying into the building and it's just …”

Calcavecchia never finished the thought. Like all of us, he never has.

He played college golf at Pepperdine University where he was a three-time All-American. Chris Stroud

After 290 starts on the PGA TOUR, Stroud got his first win at the 2017 Barracuda Championship, beating out Greg Owen and Richy Werenski in an exciting two-hole playoff. It was a long time coming, considering Stroud has collected 29 Top-Ten finishes on the PGA TOUR throughout his career. Leading up to his career, Stroud played college golf at Lamar University in Texas and was a two time All-American. He is heavily involved in various philanthropic efforts. After Hurricane Harvey devasted his hometown, Stroud organized a Pro-Am to raise money for the those affected by the hurricane. Altogether, Stroud’s Pro-Am raised over $1.2 million in relief funds for the hurricane victims.

In 2012, Chalmers founded MAXimum Changes, a non-profit that supports children who have been diagnosed with autism. The foundation is named after his son Max who was diagnosed with autism in 2005.

Two of Henry’s three PGA TOUR level wins have been recorded in Reno-Tahoe at the Barracuda Championship (2012 & 2015). Henry has posted 39 Top-Ten finishes throughout his career on the PGA TOUR. • Open champions Justin Leonard and John Daly tie for 5 th place
  • Long hitting J.B. Holmes ties for 12 th in his lone Barracuda appearance

In addition, Ogilvy is a three-time Presidents Cup selection (2007, 2009, & 2011) and a three-time World Golf Championships winner (2006, 2008, & 2009). He reached a career-high World Golf Rankings of 5th in 2006. In 2014, he won the Barracuda Championship, his first win in over four years. He is the winner of three PGA TOUR tournaments including the 2013 Barracuda Championship and the 2019 US Open. Over his career, he has recorded 33 Top-Ten finishes. Woodland uses a 1984 silver half-dollar as his ball marker, a gift from his mother that corresponds with his birth year. Woodland is remembered for taking his pants off to hit a shot after his tee shot landed near water trouble at the 2016 Honda Classic, a move that went viral on social media: Click Here to View.

  • Champion Gary Woodland goes on to win the US Open in 2019
  • Future World Golf Hall of Fame member Davis Love III finishes T32 in his first Barracuda
  • JJ Henry misses the cut in his title defense. He’d make up for that in 2015…
  • Flamboyant Swede Jesper Parnevik makes his final appearance in the Barracuda

A multisport athlete, Piercy won two high-school Nevada state championships in soccer before playing college golf at San Diego State. Throughout his career he has amassed 33 Top-Ten finishes, four third place finishes, and three runner-up finishes – one of which came at the 2016 U.S. Open. Piercy commonly draws a smiley face to mark his golf balls, reminding him to have fun while doing what he loves. Piercy was born in Las Vegas, Nevada, on November 6, 1978.

  • Local phenom Scott Smith, makes his first of three starts in the Barracuda missing the cut
  • 49 year old major champion Steve Elkington finished in a tie for sixth in his final appearance at the Barracuda
  • Future FedEx Cup Champion Billy Horschel finishes tied for 10 th in his first of two Barracuda starts
  • Popular Australian Jarrod Lyle makes his final appearance. Sadly Jarrod passed away on August 8, 2018 after a nearly 20 year recurring battle with leukemia.

Matt Bettencourt

Bettencourt’s career in sports started out in baseball. Rickie Fowler comes inches from par-4 ace at Travelers Championship

Change Text Size

Rickie Fowler won’t win the Travelers Championship, but he nearly matched a piece of rare history at the season’s final Signature Event.

Fowler’s tee shot settled inside a foot at the 293-yard, par-4 15th at TPC River Highlands (10 inches, exactly), as he nearly became the second player in TOUR history to make a hole-in-one on a par 4.

TPC River Highlands’ par-4 15th is one of the TOUR’s most memorable drivable par 4s, with water left of the green that can penalize a slightly pulled tee shot. But at under 300 yards, the hole is gettable for the entire field, with a leaderboard-flipping eagle always a possibility. Fowler played a baby draw with a fairway metal that landed on the green’s front portion and rolled toward the back-left hole location with perfect pace, just missing on the cup’s left side. Fowler, sporting his trademark Sunday orange, smiled and shrugged as if to say it was a mere misread.

The tap-in eagle moved Fowler to 6-under on his round, 14-under for the tournament. He opened in rounds of 64-69-69 at TPC River Highlands, a respectable showing but 10 strokes back of 54-hole leader Tom Kim.

Rickie Fowler’s Round 1 highlights from Travelers

Andrew Magee recorded the TOUR’s lone par-4 ace at the 2001 WM Phoenix Open, making a 1 on the 332-yard, par-4 17th hole during the first round at TPC Scottsdale. There isn’t video footage of the ball rolling into the hole, although an angle exists of the ball deflecting off Tom Byrum’s putter on the green (playing in the group ahead) before finding the cup.

Fowler’s shot was amply documented – but it came just a hair away from matching Magee’s historic albatross.

Cameron Young shoots the 13th sub-60 round in PGA Tour history at the Travelers Championship

The first one came in 1977.

It was another 14 years before someone did it again.

It was then eight years after that before it happened a third time.

Breaking 60 has always held mythical status in golf.

Al Geiberger (1977), Chip Beck (1991) and David Duval (1999) were the first three to pull it off.

Since 2010, there have been eight more PGA Tour golfers who shot a 59, including Jim Furyk, who also shot a record-setting 58 from in 2016. He remains the only golfer to shoot a 58 on Tour and he’s the only golfer to break 60 twice.

Scottie Scheffler also broke 60 on the PGA Tour, shooting a 59 in the second round of the 2020 Northern Trust. It was the 12th time that a Tour golfer broke 60.

At the 2024 Travelers Championship, Cameron Young got off to a red-hot start in the third round on Saturday and knocked in a tester for par on the final hole of the day to become the 13th player to turn the trick. He began with two birdies before recording an eagle on the par-4 third hole. He added five more birdies and an eagle on the par-4 15th hole.

His previous low on the PGA Tour was a 62, recorded in 2022 in the second round of the Genesis Invitational.

59 FOR CAMERON YOUNG! He cards the 13th sub-60 round in PGA TOUR history @TravelersChamp 👏 pic.twitter.com/dDoz5CxEHA — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) June 22, 2024

On the LPGA, there has only been one 59. It came in 2001 and was accomplished by Annika Sorenstam.

Bryson DeChambeau joined the 58 Club after his 12-under round in a LIV Golf event. Joaquin Niemann’s 59 in the 2024 LIV opener made him the second on that circuit to do it.

Here’s a closer look at the sub-60 rounds on the PGA Tour:

Jim Furyk – 2016 – 58

Jim Furyk tore up the course at TPC River Highlands on Aug. 7, 2016, with a 12-under 58 in the Travelers Championship, the first and still only 58 on the PGA Tour. His round included 10 birdies, an eagle and seven pars. While six players had previously shot 59 in a PGA Tour round, Furyk became the first to earn the “Mr. 58” distinction. He’s also the first player to shoot two sub-60 rounds in official golf tournaments, as he also shot a 59 in the second round of the 2013 BMW Championship. Furyk finished the tournament tied for fifth.

Al Geiberger – 1977 – 59

Al Geiberger was the first player to shoot 59 in a PGA Tour event when he did so during the second round in 1977 at Colonial Country Club. Known at “Mr. 59,” he had 11 birdies and an eagle on the par-72 course. He remains the only PGA Tour history to win a non-major without a single round in the 60s. His other rounds at that Memphis Classic were 72, 72 and 70. Geiberger went on to win the tournament by three shots over Jerry McGee and Gary Player.

Chip Beck – 1991 – 59

During the third round of the 1991 Las Vegas Invitational at the Sunrise Golf Course, Chip Beck caught fire and shot a 13 under (all birdies) on the par-72 layout. He made the turn, after starting on the back nine, with a 7-under 29. He proceeded to shoot 6 under on the front and become the second golfer in Tour history to break 60. “The way I did it today, I could have shot 59 anywhere,” Beck told the  Los Angeles Times  after his round. “It’s nice to be aligned with Geiberger. He’s always been a hero of mine.” He finished tied for third.

David Duval – 1999 – 59

It took 14 years between the first and second 59s in PGA Tour history. It was another eight years before the third 59 was posted. It came when David Duval played the final round of the 1999 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. He trailed by 7 shots after three rounds but carded 10 birdies heading through 17 holes. He then eagled the par-5 18th with a 6-foot putt to get his 59 and clinch the victory. Duval’s 59 was the first to come in the final round.

Paul Goydos – 2010 – 59

An opening-round 59 happened at the John Deere Classic in 2010 as Paul Goydos just needed 22 putts to get to 12 under. His 8-under 28 on the back nine matched the lowest nine-hole score in relation to par on the PGA Tour. He then continued with a 4-under on the front nine. It was the first of two 59s on Tour in 2010.  Goydos finished second in the tournament, two shots back of Steve Stricker.

Stuart Appleby – 2010 – 59

A final round 11-under 59 at the 2010 Greenbrier Classic allowed Stuart Appleby to grab his fifth PGA Tour title in style. He had nine birdies on his front nine, then an eagle and three more birdies on the back nine becoming the fifth player on the PGA Tour to break 60 and the second player to do so in 2010.

Jim Furyk – 2013 – 59

Three years before Furyk shot his 58, he posted a 59 in the second round of the BMW Championship. The 2018 U.S. Ryder Cup captain made 11 birdies and holed out for eagle on the par-4 15th hole at Conway Farms Golf Club. He made a 3-footer at the par-4 ninth hole, his final hole. For the tournament, Fuyrk finished third, three shots back of winner Zach Johnson.

Justin Thomas – 2017 – 59

Justin Thomas  posted the seventh 59  and eighth sub-60 score in PGA Tour history at the 2017 Sony Open. Thomas opened with an eagle to get to 9 under through 13 on the par-70 Waialae Country Club. He faced a 10-footer for par on No. 8 (his 17th), and he needed to make it drop to keep the 59 hopes alive. He drained it. Needing an eagle at the last to shoot 59, he hit his second shot on the par 5 to 15 feet. The rest is history. Thomas went on to win the tournament by seven shots over Justin Rose.

Adam Hadwin – 2017 – 59

Adam Hadwin fired a 13-under 59 at the 2017 CareerBuilder Challenge, becoming the eighth player in PGA Tour history to shoot 59. His round came during Round 3 at La Quinta Country Club, one of three courses being played for the tournament. Hadwin finished the event in second, one shot behind winner Hudson Swafford.

Brandt Snedeker – 2018 – 59

Snedeker shot 11-under 59 Thursday in the first round of the Wyndham Championship thanks to a 20-foot birdie putt on No. 9, his final hole of the day at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina. Snedeker teed off on No. 10 and shot an inconspicuous 3-under 32 over his first nine holes, which included an opening bogey. He tore it up down the stretch with an 8-under 27 over his last nine holes, with six birdies and a 176-yard eagle hole-out at the par-4 sixth. He’s the first player ever to break 60 after starting with a bogey. Snedeker won the tournament by three shots.

Kevin Chappell – 2019 – 59

Kevin Chappell shot a 59 during the second round of A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier in 2019. He used a record-tying stretch of nine-consecutive birdies to reach 11-under for the day, becoming the 11th player to break 60 in the history of the PGA Tour. He finished the event T-47.

Scottie Scheffler – 2020 – 59

Add another 59 to the PGA Tour record books. Scottie Scheffler logged the iconic number at TPC Boston in the second round of the 2020 Northern Trust. Scheffler’s round of 12-under 59 came after an opening 1-under 70. He clinched the 59 with a four-footer for birdie on the par-5 closing hole. It’s the 12th time a PGA Tour golfer broke 60.

Cameron Young - 2024 – 59

Cameron Young made it interesting on the last hole, but he sunk a nine-foot putt for par on the 18th hole and finished with a 59 in the third round of the Travelers Championship.

You can still tune in if you're watching the PGA Championship without cable. It's easy (and via some providers, free).

Watch the 2024 Travelers Championship on Peacock

In addition to PGA Tour events like the 2024 Travelers Championship, Peacock offers its subscribers live-streaming access to NFL games that air on NBC, and sports airing on USA Network. The streaming service has plenty more live sports to offer, including  Big Ten basketball , Premier League soccer and WWE wrestling (including formerly PPV-only events such as WrestleMania ). There are 80,000 hours worth of recorded content to watch as well, including hit movies and TV series such as "The Office" and "Parks and Recreation."

A Peacock subscription costs $6 per month. An annual plan is available for $60 per year. You can cancel anytime.

Top features of Peacock:

  • If you only want to watch the 2024 Travelers Championship, a seven-day free trial of Fubo TV will be a less expensive option.
  • Peacock features plenty of current and classic NBC and Bravo TV shows, plus original programming such as the award-winning reality show "The Traitors."

2001 pga tour championship

SAMMAMISH, Wash. – Any player expecting a warm greeting out of Sahalee Country Club this week was jolted by a bucket of icy water atop their heads on the way through the door. One by one, Sahalee – with its narrow fairways and its greens growing firmer by the day – spit out the best players in the world, doing so with the affection one gets from a porcupine’s hug.

For all its mind-numbing beauty, (ITAL)Sa-hallway,(END ITAL) as some players are calling it, can rear back and punch like Mike Tyson. Very few passed unscathed through the winding maze of nature in the second round of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship on Friday. We could be in for a weekend of attrition.

Your KPMG co-leaders after 36 holes are Sarah Schmelzel, slightly built golfer out of Arizona who has yet to win on the LPGA, and Amy Yang, a more accomplished LPGA veteran from Korea who hasn’t had a top-20 finish this season. Both played terrific golf – Yang was bogey-free – and if either goes on to win, she will have earned every inch of it.

Schmelzel somehow found six birdies in the morning on Friday, including birdies at her last two holes (17 and 18), shot a day’s best 5-under 67, and was first to post 6-under 138.

Yang, in her 17th LPGA season, was last year’s winner of the season-ending CME Group Tour Championship in Florida.

Yang, in the days' second-to-last group, shot a rock-steady 68. One shot back with one hole to play, Yang laid up well short of the green, then stuffed a wedge to tap-in range at the par-5 18th to grab a share of the lead.

Three players sit two shots back, including former World No. 1 Jin Young Ko of Korea (68); Lexi Thompson, who is 29 and plans to make the 2024 season her last as a full-time player; and Japan’s Hinako Shibuno. Thompson shot 72. Shibuno, a former Women's British Open champion dubbed "the smiling Cinderella," shot a second consecutive 70.

Thompson, seeking her second major title and first in a decade, played her opening nine in 33 shots to reach 7 under, but ran into a double and two bogeys coming in. She came ready for a good tussle, and was encouraged with her position heading to the weekend. She has not won on the LPGA in five years.

“Honestly, even (par) is a great score out here,” said Thompson, who fell just short in a playoff a week ago at the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give. “Had a great front nine and had a few hiccups on the back nine, but it happens out there. Also made a lot of good putts, so really going to build on that.”

Perhaps most alarming in Friday’s action was the unexpectedly poor performance of World No. 1 Nelly Korda, already a six-time champion in 2024. Korda, 25, started the day tied for second at 3 under, trailing Thompson by a shot. Friday afternoon, she was headed down the final few holes sitting directly on the cutline, trying to avoid missing the cut in a third consecutive start.

By the time her second shot bounded millimeters out of bounds at the par-4 15th, where she made double, Korda was in deep trouble, and she couldn’t recover.  Korda opened the round with four consecutive bogeys to quickly leave red numbers – she missed 3-footers on Nos. 2 and 4 – and shot 42 on the front nine. Headed for her first birdie-less round since the 2021 U.S. Women’s Open, Korda got up and down from a greenside bunker at the par-5 18th for her lone birdie, and a round of 81. It left her at 6-over 150, one shot beyond the cut. It marked the first time in her career that Korda has missed three consecutive cuts.

"It's just golf recently for me," said a tearful Korda. "No words for how I'm playing right now. I'm just going to go home and try to reset."

Schmelzel, 30, who earned LPGA Tour membership at the inaugural LPGA Q-Series in 2018 but has yet to taste victory in this, her sixth LPGA season, knew she was capable of playing some strong golf – she just needed to see it. It had been a while.

After a hot start to 2024, Schmelzel missed the cut in five of her last seven starts. Instructor Chris Mayson, who began working with Schmelzel last offseason, had some simple but impactful words for her as Schmelzel got ready to head to Seattle this week.

“I was kind of in that ‘perfection’ frame of mind,” Schmelzel said, “like, ‘What do I need to do play well?’ He said, ‘You’re going to play well. Relax and it’s going to happen. And believe it.’”

Ah, yes. The belief. It’s a key ingredient in the mix. Schmelzel appeared poised for a magical LPGA season in the early days of the year, finishing T8 in three different starts to go along with a career-best runner-up finish at the Blue Bay LPGA in China.

Schmelzel said she has relied on the team that surrounds her to remind her that her golf is all about the process; it is not, nor will it ever be, about trying to be perfect.

“They have been just awesome helping me continue to work on the right things and encouraging me,” Schmelzel said. “I think they’ve just said it enough that I started to believe it.”

Schmelzel competed in gymnastics as a youth, a state champion in the high bars in Arizona, but her athletic direction would veer down a completely different path when her dad showed up to dismiss her from school early to watch something special that was happening on the family’s home course, Moon Valley.

It was 2001, and Annika Sorenstam was in the middle of shooting 59 that day, a scoring record that never has been matched in women’s golf.

“I don’t remember much of it, other than the atmosphere,” Schmelzel said on Friday. “But from that point forward, I went out to Moon Valley every year.”

She took up golf at 5, and this week, she continues to chase a dream. Schmelzel is 36 holes away from being not only a winner on the LPGA, but a major champion. Standing in the way: Amy Yang’s experience and a venue called Sahalee.

Schmelzel will have her hands full. The good news? She is hardly alone.

5 things to know from the kpmg women's pga, where the trees are magnificent and lexi thompson is contending, share this article.

2001 pga tour championship

SAMMIMISH, Wash. – There’s something mystical about Sahalee Country Club. The towering trees so tall and resplendent that it’s easy to get lost in the beauty of the place. That is, of course, until it’s time to thread the needle of these so-called Sa-hallways.

Sandra Palmer, a recent inductee at the World Golf Hall of Fame, taught for a number of years here and joked about the need to walk single file around the tree-lined gem. This marks the second time that Sahalee has played host to the KPMG Women’s PGA, and once again, the biggest names in the game are towering among the majestic cedars, hemlock and Douglas firs.

Here’s a look at five things to note from Round 2 of the 70th KPMG Women’s PGA:

'Believe it'

2001 pga tour championship

American Sarah Schmelzel vaulted to the top of the board after a 5-under 67, the low round of the week so far. Her aggressive play off the tee paid off handsomely as she recorded six birdies on the day to take the clubhouse lead at 6-under 138. Major champions Jin Young Ko, Lexi Thompson and Hinako Shibuno trail by two.

Schmelzel, 30, grew up playing one of the few tree-lined courses in Phoenix, Moon Valley Country Club. She was there in March 2001 when Annika Sorenstam carded the only 59 in LPGA history. Schmelzel’s parents have been members there since the late ’90s, and one of the guys in the bag room called her father and told him to bring the kids out. Something special was brewing.

“I don’t remember much of it other than the atmosphere,” said Schmelzel, who was pulled out of school. “But from at that point forward, I went out to Moon Valley every year that the Safeway was there and went and watched Annika and followed her around. She’s been so inspiring to my career, really just the way she worked really hard, the way she still works really hard, and the way she carries herself.”

Schmelzel, who is looking for her first LPGA title, had a stretch of four top-8 finishes early in the 2024 season that included a career-best second place at the Blue Bay LPGA in China.

Since then, it’s been a bit of a drought, with five missed cuts. Schmelzel said swing coach Chris Mayson has been instrumental not only on the technical side of her game, but the mental as well.

“I was kind of in that perfection frame of mind, like what do I need to do to play well?” said Schemzel of her mindset coming into this week. “He said, you’re going to play well. Relax and it’s going to happen. Believe it.”

'It's all about patience'

After three birdies on the back side (her front) to start the second round, Lexi Thompson looked in command of what could be one of her last major championship starts.  A double-bogey on the par-5 second, however, put a dent in the day followed by a bogey on the fourth and eighth holes.

The up-and-down round ended at even par, keeping Thompson still in the mix and in a good frame of mind at day’s end.

“It’s all about patience,” she said. “Coming into each and every day out here, you know you’re going to hit some bad shots that maybe get penalized by the trees and you have to take your medicine with either pitching out or just getting it back in position.”

Thompson announced her plans to step away from full-time golf at the end of 2024 at the U.S. Women’s Open last month. Two weeks later, she lost in a playoff at the Meijer LPGA Classic and now sits in prime position to make a run at a second major championship title.

“I was hoping for it,” said Thompson when asked if she saw a run like this coming. “That’s a better answer. I had the few weeks off before Michigan and I worked extremely hard. I was out at the golf course in Florida summer for five to seven hours a day just trying to figure out something that just clicked.”

Thompson struggled earlier in the year with a wrist injury that moved into her thumb. Her entire right hand would throb. The pain has been relieved in recent weeks thanks to treatment and some “pretty good painkillers.”

Cinderella returns

2001 pga tour championship

Hinako Shibuno of Japan walks to the 14th hole tee box during the second round of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Sahalee Country Club on June 21, 2024 in Sammamish, Washington. (Photo by Steph Chambers/Getty Images)

Hinako Shibuno put her manager, Mimi Taya, on the bag last month after her caddie went back to Japan. Taya planned to quit her second job after the U.S. Women’s Open, but then Shibuno finished second at Lancaster Country Club so Taya stayed put.

When it comes to the sudden turnaround in her game, Taya said it 100 percent comes down to the last-minute change she made with her shafts going into the opening round of the Women’s Open. The softer shafts have led to more control for the 2019 AIG Women’s Open winner.

Shibuno’s second-place finish to fellow Japanese player Yuka Saso at the Women’s Open was massive news back in Japan, where she’s a mega-star. To put it in perspective, Taya said golfers in Japan know Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama. But non-golfers know the name Shibuno.

The player known as the “Smiling Cinderella” jumped up 131 spots in the Rolex Rankings after her runner-up at the U.S. Women’s Open. She’s now 62 nd .

Her second consecutive 70 included an all-time up-and-down from the hazard on the second hole.

“I opened the face and it was – I shot like a bunker shot,” she said, “and a little hard contact with the ball.”

Another Ko back in the mix

Former World No. 1 Jin Young Ko hasn’t won on the LPGA since May 2023 at the Cognizant Founders Cup. She hasn’t won a major since she won two in 2019 (ANA Inspiration and Evian Championship). After a second-round 68 that included 15 greens and 29 putts, Ko finds herself square in the mix. She called Sahalee a “fun” test.

“If I win the major, I’m going to cry on the green,” said Ko, laughing, “like lay down and then crying.”

Earlier this week, Brooke Henderson was honored at Sahalee with a plaque on the par-5 18 th  to commemorate the 7-iron she stuffed from 155 yards to seal a victory playoff over then No. 1-ranked Lydia Ko at the 2016 KPMG. The club also made her an honorary member.

Henderson, who put a new putter in the bag this week just as she did eight years ago, shot 73-72 to sit seven back of Schmelzel. Ko, who missed the cut at the U.S. Women’s Open, shot 75-73.
