33 Cozy and Inviting Family Room Ideas for the Most Use Space in Your Home

Game night is officially on!

Although the room’s function is fairly straightforward (see more on that below), its aesthetic potential is quite broad. For example, the family room of a modern farmhouse may incorporate clean-lined leather sofas and an industrial cart-turned-coffee table, while a family room in a cottage may be more likely to include canvas slipcovers and a chippy wood coffee table. The family room is also a great space to incorporate your one-of-a-kind vintage finds , because they’ve already seen decades of wear and tear and can probably handle your most heated game of Scrabble.

In addition to incorporating vintage items, you’ll also want to prioritize durable materials and quality furniture. “A lot of time my clients will say, ‘Well, this is where we will hang out, so I don’t want to spend a lot,’ ’’ say Georgia-based designer Alexa Stevenson . “But if it is a room you are going to use all the time, this is exactly when you should invest.” Alexa loves the worry-free nature of indoor-outdoor performance fabrics, citing Crypton and InsideOut as frequently used favorites. ( Sunbrella is another favorite source of designers.) Fabrics featuring prints are another good choice. “A good pattern can hide all kinds of sins,” says Alexa.

What is considered a family room?

A family room is a casual space, often a secondary living space, for congregating in a home. “Family rooms tend to be cozier [in decorating style] and make no apologies for a big television,” says Alexa. It is typically a large, open room—likely positioned right off the kitchen —and may be used for a variety of purposes, such as, yes, watching television, playing games (both analog and video), or entertaining children. The space may also be outfitted with a game and puzzle closet.

What is the difference between a living room and a family room?

Generally speaking, a family room is a more casual hang-out space with a larger television, while the living room is a more formal sitting area that may not have a TV, and may even have a piano. Living rooms are more outward-facing and tend to be positioned closer to the front entry , making it a more formal reception area for guests. The family room, on the otherhand, usually located further back in the house. It may be part of a great room or located off of the kitchen, or it may even be located on another level like the basement.

So what’s a den, then?

So glad you asked! Dens are typically smaller spaces and more private than the family room. When it comes to the home’s footprint, dens also tend to be positioned in more secluded spaces . In recent years, many so-called “dens” have morphed into man caves , home offices , or even libraries.

See below for 33 ways designers and homeowners have dreamt up cozy and comfortable spaces to upgrade family downtime. (Now can someone pass the remote?)

Embrace Durable Leather

rustic living room with modern leather furniture

In the family room of Christina Bridger’s Michigan home, a leather couch beautifully stands up to the wear and tear of everyday life. The Gold Medal suede chairs—$55 for the pair—were a lucky discovery in a salvage shop. Vintage books, blankets, and board games round out the room.

Get Cozy with Color

blue brick fireplace in rustic farmhouse living room

This family room’s painted fireplace was a happy accident. “Originally, we wanted to restore the brick, but it started bleeding red because of some weird finish applied in years past,” says designer Erica Harrison . “We had no choice but to paint it, which ended up helping tie the whole room together.” Higher-end fabrics from heritage brands help balance the home’s rusticity. Topped with a vintage game, the antique oak trunk provides the perfect patina-rich spot to unapologetically kick up one’s feet.

Play with Pattern

Tastemaker and textile designer Bailey McCarthy designed this Texas space to be roomy enough to host a crowd but cozy enough for family game nights around the fire. “I wanted a few big pieces of indestructible furniture that people could pile on, plus some modern elements so it didn’t feel too ‘themey,’” she says. Case in point: Bailey paired the room’s patterned pieces—a buffalo check-covered sofa and wildflower chintz armchair—with a streamlined steel-framed coffee table and graphic longhorn watercolor painting (by Houston artist Mary H. Case ) to keep the mix from going too traditional.

Hang a Vintage Sign

In the family room of a nearly century-old Wisconsin property Pine Cove Cabin , a massive sign, which had previously sat at the end of the driveway, helps corral clutter thanks to the addition of vintage-style hooks. It’s now “the world’s largest coat rack,” says homeowner Megan Marsh.

Roll Out a Coffee Table

casual california family room with blue sofa and factory cart turned coffee table

In this laid-back wine country retreat, a factory cart-turned-coffee table can handle plenty of kicked-up cowboy boots. V-groove walls, exposed beams, industrial lighting, and a plush blue sofa collectively reiterate a casual come-as-you-are feel.

Stick to Sisal

family room with creamy white walls, ticking stripe sofa, and green botanical print chair

For a high-traffic area, you can’t go wrong with a durable sisal rug, as seen in this earth-toned Alabama river house designed by Jennifer Zurik of MZ. Architecture . An assortment of plaids, block prints, ticking stripes, and botanicals adds a mix-match of muddy color and nostalgic patterns against the keeping room’s creamy shiplap walls and other natural textures.

Create a Secret Nook

blue living room with vaulted ceilings and a ladder to a bunk room

Positioned just off the family room and accessed only by a rolling library ladder , this Wisconsin home’s lofted hideaway, known as ‘The Cave,’ is what childhood dreams are made of. A brass ship porthole even offers a bird’s-eye view of the downstairs setting, including a pair of Cesca-style chairs reupholstered with a 1950s Hudson Bay blanket.

Bring the Outdoor Furniture Indoors

rustic coastal living room with white rattan furniture

Wet swimsuits? Bring ’em on! For the family room in her coastal Maine cottage, homeowner Mary Barrett scoured secondhand shops for weather-resistant wovens—rattan, wicker, and bamboo—that can take a beating indoors or out. “We live a lot of life in this house,” she says. “No one wants to spend time worrying about the upholstery.” Similarly, indoor/outdoor rugs (seen throughout the home) stand up to flip-flop traffic—and errant ice cream scoops. “Our rugs have passed the family reunion test,” Mary says. “Once they’ve withstood 16 sets of feet, knocked-over wineglasses, and a whole spilled platter of pesto-covered appetizers, you know they can hold up to pretty much anything.”

Layer on the Neutrals

farmhouse living room with barn beams, neutral furniture

Yes, you can opt for neutrals in a family room. The trick to keeping it family- and pet-friendly is seeking out nubby linens, performance fabrics, or other durable materials such as canvas or drop cloth. Limewashed walls add warmth and texture to this Texas family room while allowing the rustic architectural accents—namely wooden beams salvaged from deconstructed barns—remain the visual focus. A simple sisal rug lays the foundation for a patterned antique Turkish rug, while a large coffee table hosts a revolving arrangement of antique finds.

Hang an Indoor Swing

Nothing reinforces a relaxed, we’re-in-the-country feel like a porch swing, and this hanging indoor sofa, seen in the party barn of musician Thomas Rhett and author Lauren Akins, does the trick. The refined silhouette of the swingable sofa adds an extra element of surprise.

Coat the Room With Color

family room with blueish gray walls, a big fireplace, bright green velvet curved sofa

In this Alabama river house, the color-drenched living space—the walls, mantel, and trim are all painted the same blue-green hue—is as immersive as the home’s waterfront surroundings. A pair of sofas, including a custom curved one covered in greenish-gold performance velvet, is layered with textiles in spice-toned block prints and stripes. A live-edge coffee table adds another organic touch.

Add Wood for Warmth

modern farmhouse living room with natural materials

Designer Paige Thornton chose a white oak for the floors throughout her Alabama house—a fresh twist on typical dark hardwoods. The coffee table adds warmth without detracting from the striking fireplace facade, which is made from old barnwood. Slipcovered sofas and cowhide and sisal rugs add softness and texture, and verdant pops of green reinforce the natural approach.

Turn a Trunk Into a Coffee Table

After painting over a black fireplace mantel with a fresh coat of white paint, tastemaker Holly Williams brought in a striped sofa , banners salvaged from a church, and a statement-making vintage trunk that cleverly doubles as storage.

Display Something Sentimental

In this shingled coastal California cottage, the vintage print over the mantel, which features both American and British flags, is a nod to homeowner Samantha Walker’s ship-filled family history. Her granddad was in the Royal Navy; she also left England on a ship to emigrate to the United States. A weathered antique butcher-block coffee table establishes the home’s kick-up-your-feet feeling. Washable slipcovers on the deep sofa and swivel chairs minimize wear-and-tear worries. Underfoot, even the thick sisal rug holds up to a parade of bare feet and flip-flops.

Turn Old Games Into Wall Art

In Katie Barnes’ Missouri lake house, Lakeshore Lodge , vintage game boards, such as pinball, Gravitation, and Chinese Checkers, do double duty as quirky and colorful wall art. The old wood toolbox-turned-coffee table holds even more games for their kids and visiting friends.

Unify the Space with a Big Rug

family room with blue, white, and tan upholstery

“In this family room for a blended family of six, I used a wool blend neutral rug that covers most of the floor—big rugs help unify a room that has more than one zone,” says designer Alexa Stevenson . “We also needed a lot of seating in this not-huge space—and all with a view of the television,” she says. The sofa and the swivel chairs are covered in Crypton fabrics from Kravet and Thibaut , while the spool chairs are a cut velvet pattern that can take a beating.

Design for the Dogs

If it can withstand wily pups, then it can also handle drippy bathing suits and sandy feet. That was the practical philosophy of tastemaker Phoebe Cole-Smith when she chose textiles—durable Sunbrella and hemp linen fabrics—for her Martha’s Vineyard cottage, where her dogs Glen, a rescue, and Dixie, a Jack Russell terrier, are inevitably the life of the party. The floor features an inexpensive rush rug: basically a seagrass floor covering pieced together via one-foot interwoven squares, which makes swapping out a worse-for-wear section a breeze.

Make it Personal

casual texas living room filled with vintage finds

“This is the most tranquil room in the house,” says antiques lover Renita Browning, noting the absence of both a television and other technology. However, the family room of her 1904 McKinney, Texas, Craftsman is chock-full of antiques—each of which comes with a story—including a chippy factory-cart coffee table, oversize flour sign, and apothecary cabinet that houses yellowware. Oh, and about those cows: “I was so thrilled to see these at an auction preview, because usually you see concrete deer but not cows. I love all things cow! They weigh a ton and are definitely not going anywhere.”

Bring the Outside In

In this Alabama home, a neutral palette keeps the focus on the view, while leafy motifs on the throw pillows add some pattern. Also in keeping with the outside-in approach: a duo of duck decoys and a pair of aviary hangings from a French schoolhouse.

Mix Periods of Furniture

To help this previously gray space feel more warm and welcoming, homeowner Dana Simpson added a fresh coat of paint and smartly hid track lighting on top of the beams. A Stephen Kenn sofa made of repurposed WWII military fabric, vintage steel-welded frames, and leather straps pairs well with the new: a brickmaker table from Hammertown , deep-seated roll-arm chairs , and a landscape by artist Karen LeSage . Dana also replaced the brick fireplace surround with Pietra Cardosa, a blue-gray sandstone.

The quaint cocktail nook of this colorful Atlanta home by Melanie Turner racked up the most nods by a landslide.

“It’s probably the most thoughtful project we’ve ever worked on,” the designer tells House Beautiful . “A young family, a historic house, heirlooms, and playfulness all in one.”

Exposed brick floors lend this Texas kitchen reimagined by designer Marie Flanigan and her associate, Ashlee Garner, its rustic European look.

“The overall aesthetic is one that’s layered and transitional with an underbelly of tradition,” Flanigan says of the Houston home .

Just off the mudroom of this Hamptons family retreat by Lauren Wills lies a light-filled cabana replete with everything you need for a lazy afternoon on the beach.

The cheery space showcases no-fuss cement floors that make for easy cleanup.

When it came to revamping her longtime abode in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, designer Liz Caan repurposed a lot of pieces and strategically filled the historic house with whimsical art and antiques.

“I think the beauty of this home is that it's constantly evolving," she says.

Want beautiful homes? We’ve got plenty. Let’s swoon over them together.

Instagrammers swooned over this darling nursery , thoughtfully put together by Nashville-based designer April Tomlin for her close friend Lauren Akins (who happens to be married to country superstar Thomas Rhett).

"It is a real and happy home," Tomlin enthuses. "I love how much love it holds."

Liz Caan turned heads once again with this shot of her family home’s incredible kitchen , which features an enviable walk-in pantry.

“I wanted this kitchen to have some soul and wanted to be surrounded by things I love made by people I love,” she reveals.

The English-inspired kitchen and servery of this Nova Scotia new build by Philip Mitchell boasts reclaimed antique wood floors, handcrafted cabinetry, and ultradurable surfaces.

“Every drawer is divided to hold something specific, whether it’s utensils or spices,” notes the designer.

Designed by Nannette Brown , the glossy all-black kitchen of this New York City apartment oozes with high drama and sophistication.

“I’m a big believer that within a home, different rooms should evoke different feelings and purposes,” says the local designer.

The spectacular transformation of this Boston home bar by Twelve Chairs Interiors , designed for serious wine collectors who love to entertain, involved adding an extra row of cabinets and polished nickel knobs and pulls—not to mention a fun rolling ladder.

“By going all the way up, we added function and erased the unsightly void,” explains the firm’s cofounder, Miggy Mason.

Last but not least: Rounding out this year’s list is Brown Hall Design principal Colleen Bashaw’s sweet bar setup.

Replete with a little brass sink and mini fridge, the charming space seamlessly blends in with the rest of her New Jersey home ’s whimsical interiors.

Craft Room Tour: Decorating And Organizing Ideas

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS. PLEASE S EE OUR  FULL DISCLOSURE POLICY  FOR DETAILS .

Take this craft room tour to get decorating and organizing ideas that will help you set up your own creative art space or home office.

Happy Friday! Today I wanted to invite you behind the scenes into my home office and crafting space. Pour yourself a cup of coffee and let me take you on a little craft room tour to give you some decorating and organizing ideas for setting up your own creative art space or home office.

Love this craft room tour! So many colorful decorating ideas and easy organizing ideas that would work great for a kid's art room or a creative home office space.

Back in January, I told you all about the problems I was having in my craft room with lots of messy before photos. As part of that blog post, I shared 5 easy ideas for craft room organization and promised to follow-up and give you a full tour of the room now that it’s done. This has got to be one of my favorite rooms in our entire house and I can’t wait to share it with you!

Welcome to My Craft Room Tour

Come inside and let me give you a little 360 degree craft room tour. I hope you enjoy this little peek into our space and that it gives you a little better idea of where I make many of the projects you see here on Ideas for the Home by Kenarry®. More importantly I hope this craft room tour gives you an idea or two that you can use for decorating or setting up your own crafty space.

Our Basement Craft Room

My craft room is in the basement or lower level of our home. To get to the craft room, you’ll walk down the stairs past our castle playroom and through the boy’s toy area to enter through double doors.

I chose French glass doors so I can close the space off if I don’t want the boys messing with something I’m creating. Or alternatively, I can also be painting or crafting away in there and easily watch through the glass to keep an eye on the boys playing.

Grab a Paint Smock

The first thing you’ll notice when you enter our craft room is a little inspiring message on a magnetic metal chalkboard that M-D Hobby & Craft gave me at the Haven Conference for DIY/home bloggers last August.

It hangs on the side of an IKEA cabinet that I use for storing the large photography equipment I use for blogging like a  light kit , vinyl backdrops and a large backdrop support/stand . Then of course, you’ll want to grab a paint smock off one of the  Command Hooks  because it’s bound to get a little messy while we’re in here!

Love this craft room tour! So many colorful decorating ideas and easy organizing ideas that would work great for a kid's art room or a creative home office space.

A Utility Sink is a Must-Have

On the other side of the French doors, opposite of the cabinet, you’ll see a large utility sink and a long chalkboard wall. I am SO glad we went through the effort and expense of putting a utility sink in the craft room. We got this one at Costco and use it ALL THE TIME!

Craft Room Utility Sink Uses

Here are just a few of the ways we use our craft room sink. If you are adding a new craft room or renovating, I definitely recommend adding a sink like this.

  • Washing up after crafts
  • Doing water crafts
  • Filling up buckets for heavy-duty cleanup
  • Dumping out and cleaning paint trays

Create An Inspirational Gallery Wall

Above the sink you’ll spy a little gallery wall with some art I’ve collected over the last few years.

I found the colored pencil canvas on clearance at Kirklands ( This one is similar ).

The “Be the Most Brilliant Color in the Box” canvas came from Hobby Lobby. They don’t carry online, but you may still be able to find it in store. Otherwise,  this same design is available on Amazon as a peg board .

I won the cute little bird art in a raffle fundraiser for Women’s Service Day , an annual event I help organize in our community. It was created by Kathy Stanton, one of my favorite local artists.

Love this craft room tour! So many colorful decorating ideas and easy organizing ideas that would work great for a kid's art room or a creative home office space.

Create a DIY Paper Towel Holder

Above the sink, we also installed a GRUNDTAL Rail from IKEA to hang towels. To create the paper towel holder, I strung a piece of sisal rope through the hole in the middle of the paper towel roll. Then I tied a large loop on each end of the rope and hung it from two GRUNDTAL S-hooks. The rope makes it really easy to change the paper towel roll whenever it runs out.

Love this craft room tour! So many colorful decorating ideas and easy organizing ideas that would work great for a kid's art room or a creative home office space.

Chalkboard Wall and Wire Art Display

Adjacent to the sink, you’ll notice about half to 2/3rd of the wall is a large oversized chalkboard. Our boys LOVE this! We just used several coats of  chalkboard paint directly on the drywall. Then we put a horizontal piece of trim across to separate the chalkboard from the rest of the wall.

Above the trim, we installed a long curtain wire from IKEA . We use small metal clips that were meant for curtains to hang art that the boys bring home from school or that we create together in the craft room.

Love this craft room tour! So many colorful decorating ideas and easy organizing ideas that would work great for a kid's art room or a creative home office space.

The Crafting Command Center

On the next wall, opposite from the French doors I have a large desk system that I got at an office supply outlet from a local manufacturer. I picked this set because it had a cabinet and file drawers that I could lock to keep the boys out of messy or dangerous art supplies like the paper cutter , X-acto knife etc.

Love this craft room tour! So many colorful decorating ideas and easy organizing ideas that would work great for a kid's art room or a creative home office space.

It may be against my better judgement, but I did put the colorful carousel of fancy scissors on one of the open shelves ( This one is similar ). It was just too pretty to hide away. Hopefully the boys don’t make me regret my decision!

Love this craft room tour! So many colorful decorating ideas and easy organizing ideas that would work great for a kid's art room or a creative home office space.

On the open shelves I also put the  Silhouette Cameo  the boys got me for Christmas last year as well as large clear acrylic canisters . Don’t they look fun and inviting with the boys’ colorful markers and colored pencils ? I’m glad I chose acrylic instead of glass canisters so they won’t break if the boys drop them on the floor.

Love this craft room tour! So many colorful decorating ideas and easy organizing ideas that would work great for a kid's art room or a creative home office space.

A Gallery Wall Fit for a Crafter (or #Blogger!)

Between the open shelf unit and the cabinet unit, there’s an small desk that adjoins the two. Above the desk, I created a small home office gallery. At the top of the gallery is a large oversized red clock I got from At Home and a #blogger sign from The Summery Umbrella .

Under that you’ll see a  bulletin board I covered with black and white fabric. It was just a regular old corkboard before I gave it a makeover. Then next to that is a magnetic markerboard. It’s the same size as the bulletin board so they balance each other well.

Love this craft room tour! So many colorful decorating ideas and easy organizing ideas that would work great for a kid's art room or a creative home office space.

At the bottom of the gallery, we installed another GRUNDTAL Rail from IKEA. I used GRUNDTAL S-hooks to hang a red wooden “tool box” I got from the Dollar Spot at Target  and bright colorful buckets that I found on clearance at Michael’s . The hanging buckets are super handy for storing craft supplies that I use all the time like Sharpie markers , colored pencils , gel pens and paint brushes .

Love this craft room tour! So many colorful decorating ideas and easy organizing ideas that would work great for a kid's art room or a creative home office space.

Craft Room Durability and Flexibility

Next to the storage cabinet, you’ll see I’ve got folding chairs stacked up against the wall. I picked the Lifetime brand plastic ones from Costco because they’re really easy to wipe clean if the boys or I spill paint or glue in the craft room. That’s also the reason we put inexpensive laminate flooring in this room. I wanted flooring that would look nice and wipe up easily, but that I wouldn’t feel bad if I accidentally dropped something or scratched it up.

On that wall, you’ll find the one small window in this room. Under the window, I keep a long  6 ft folding table  for crafting. Using a folding table, gives me flexibility to rearrange this room quickly and easily depending on the needs of the craft. I’ve even added a second folding table at times to host craft time with my friends in this space.

Love this craft room tour! So many colorful decorating ideas and easy organizing ideas that would work great for a kid's art room or a creative home office space.

Easy Way to Showcase Art

To the left of the window, you see large open frames on the wall where I hang more art that the boys create. The front on two of the frames opens like a cabinet so you can slide new art in and out. I got those at Target, but any of these frames would work the same.

The other two are just open frames I bought at Michael’s. I put small nails into the wall inside the frames and then use small binder clips to hang the art.

Love this craft room tour! So many colorful decorating ideas and easy organizing ideas that would work great for a kid's art room or a creative home office space.

Wrapping Up the Craft Room Tour

And now with one final turn, you’ll see we’re back to the big white cabinet where you picked up your paint smock on the way in! What do you think? Did you enjoy my little craft room tour?

I love it!!!! Great ideas & such a fun space for you & the Cs.

Thanks Trish! It’s great to have a space where we can make a good mess!

Hey Carrie. I just bought your Ultimate Craft Room Planner. I haven’t read it in full yet but already printed it and the Printables I will most likely use. I’m looking forward to applying your suggestions and tips to my very unorganized craft room. It’s true what they say; I know I will feel more productive with enthusiasm to do my crafts once I’m organized. As of right now I haven’t crafted in a while let alone have the room to craft. So thank you for creating the Ultimate Craft Room Planner. I’m looking at your Craft Room Tour now as I write this. Thank you for all your ideas, suggestions and tips. Keep up your great advice.

Take a tour of the Browns’ new weight room at their team facility (photos, video)

A look at the Browns new workout facility in Berea

  • Dan Labbe, cleveland.com

BEREA, Ohio — The Browns showed off their new weight room to the media in a tour on Monday, and calling it a weight room is doing it a disservice. It speaks to the team’s efforts to gain an edge in their performance using data and technology to better prepare their players for Sundays.

Shaun Huls, the Director of High Performance, offered the tour to the media. He took us through all three floors of the new area, located on the south end of the indoor practice area, overlooking the practice fields.

The first floor features a more traditional weight room with some high-tech additions, namely the Oxefit machines that have touch screens, allowing players to customize their training.

The second floor is where the cardio area is located, with stationary equipment that overlooks the outdoor fields. On the other side of the cardio station is where the real fun is found.

First, there’s a players’ lounge that features a golf simulator and video game systems.

Next to the lounge are two 25-yard long screens with about 10 yards of field turf in front of them. The coaching staff can use the screens to show game film and, using tracking data, plays can be presented in “Madden” format, where players can simulate their actions against certain fronts and movements.

Ship Model Gallery

Combining precision and craftsmanship in an exacting work of art, ship models evoke the fascination that we have for the sea and sea travel.

Few public figures have had more influence on modern political and social life than former British Prime Minister, Winston Spencer-Churchill. Fewer still had an ongoing relationship with the Queen Mary. To commemorate their affinity a new Churchill-themed exhibition has been brought to the Queen Mary.

Shipyard – LEGO® Ship Model

Measuring 26 feet, weighing over 600lbs. And made from 250,000 LEGO bricks, the LEGO Queen Mary brick model ship is a masterpiece to be seen. The model was designed by England’s certified LEGO Builder, Bright Bricks, Inc., to commemorate Britain’s most famous ocean liner.

The Cunard Story

The Cunard Story An exhibition on the Queen Mary, one of the most celebrated Cunard® ocean liners—explores the rich history of the extraordinary company that designed and built more than 150 ships over the past 175 years. Today, Cunard offers the most luxurious and unique cruise experiences available—adventures curated for travelers who savor the world.

Sun Deck/Bridge/Sports Deck

Sports Deck FWD | Daily 10am – 6pm

The nerve center for the entire ship. The BRIDGE includes the WHEELHOUSE, CHART ROOM, SIGNAL BRIDGE, and the DOCKING WINGS. The bridge is about 90 feet above the ship’s waterline.

Sports Deck | Daily 10am – 6pm

The Radio Room houses some of the original equipment used by the Queen Mary during her incredible career. The current radio room features an array of amateur radio equipment which has been used to broadcast communications around the world. Guests walking past the exhibit are likely to have a front-row seat of a real broadcast, as this space has been actively used since 1979.

Promenade Deck

Commodore’s office.

Promenade Deck Main Hall | Daily 2pm – 4pm

Formerly the Austin Reed of Regent Street clothing store (a famous, luxury brand clothier) the Commodore’s Office is now the day room of our ship’s Commodore, Everette Hoard. Much of this space is still very much original and intact. The Commodore’s Office features a number of the ship’s lavish furnishings; as well as some pieces from Commodore’s private collection. Guests are encouraged to stop in for a visit, or even just a photo with Commodore, our Staff Captain, or Chief Officer.

QM Heritage Room

Daily 10am – 6pm

See the ship through the eyes of those who served and sailed aboard her. The Queen Mary Heritage Room features video interviews of former crew members, war brides, and soldiers; all of whom share fond memories of this historic vessel. This rich history is the very foundation of the ship’s enduring legacy.

Promenade Deck Main Hall – Starboard Side  | Daily 10am – 6pm

This incredible exhibit features numerous models which showcase The Cunard® Line’s fleet; all the way from the historic  RMS Britannia  to ships from the current fleet, like the  Queen Elizabeth . Bow FWD  | Daily 10am – 6pm

During WWII the ship was outfitted with anti-aircraft weaponry to defend herself. This 40 mm gun is the same type of defensive weapon used onboard; to safely carry nearly a million troops throughout the war.

Promenade Deck Main Hall – Port Side  | Daily 10am – 6pm

The Music Room was a place where musicians, entertainers, lecturers, radio personalities and the like could rehearse. This upright piano is original to the ship, however, when the ship was in service a baby grand piano nearly filled this space.

Children’s Playroom

The original location of the Cabin or First Class Playroom. There were three playrooms available for the younger set on the Queen Mary. Each had a specific look, but all contained numerous toys that would appeal to both boys and girls. A Stewardess was assigned to oversee the youngsters. She would often gather the little ones and read to them. Play continued until the parents came to collect their children. The original artwork in this display came from the Tourist and Third Class Children’s Playrooms. The furniture is from all three classes.

Travel Bureau

This is the original Cabin or First-Class travel bureau as it was remodeled after WWII. The desks and chairs are those that were aboard when the ship sailed to Long Beach. Original desk top accessories and copies of brochures have been placed to show what would have been found when a passenger wished to make further travel arrangements. Here one could book another cruise on the Queen Mary or other liners and make train or plane reservations.

A-Deck FWD | Daily 10am – 6pm

The Cunard Story An exhibition on the Queen Mary, one of the most celebrated Cunard® ocean liners—explores the rich history of the extraordinary company that designed and built more than 150 ships over the past 175 years. Today, Cunard offers the most luxurious and unique cruise experiences available—adventures curated for travelers who savor the world.

Fire was a constant concern for “The Ship of Beautiful Woods.” The Fire Station was, not only, the first line of defense to protect the ship, it was also top-of-the-line technology that’s still impressive, even by modern day standards.

B-Deck FWD Portside | Daily 10am – 6pm

A mysteriously vague entry in the ship’s log, dated September 1949, states that a passenger was found dead in his cabin; which is now the hotel room referred to as B340. While no name was given, legends have claimed the victim as “Walter.” There is much lore surrounding Walter and the events that occurred in B340; and many believe that Walter is a vengeful spirit who loves to make his presence known. Reports of strange activity in B340 span from the ship’s days as an ocean liner, to the present day. Perhaps all of the activity is just Walter trying to get someone to listen to his side of the story. If you’re feeling brave enough, ask him yourself. He might just tell you.

First-Class Pool Viewing Area

Ask just about any paranormal investigator or medium about haunted locations aboard the Queen Mary , and you’ll probably hear many stories about the first-class pool. Why? Many believe this to be the most-haunted room aboard. Whether you hear about the ghost of a little girl named “Jackie” who loves to sing and play hide-and-seek with guests, or legends about this space becoming a “vortex” (whirlpool of energy) which allows spirits to pass between realms, seems like there’s one thing everyone can agree on: this famous Art Deco pool has become one of the most-visited locations on the entire ship.

Engine Room

Visitor’s Center D-Deck Stern | Daily 10am – 6pm

Venture down to the Engine Room and see the very heartbeat of this massive ship! Each of the 2 Engine Rooms contained 2 of the ship’s 4 powerful engines. These steam-powered turbine engines produced 40,000 horsepower a piece! When Queen Mary was speeding across the Atlantic at 28.5 knots, these engines would be turning the ship’s massive propellers 3 times every second! Fans of the paranormal will want to brave the Engine Room's lower level to check out the infamous watertight door 13, where guests often hear a wrench banging against the door.

Printing Press

Often described as a virtual floating city, the Queen Mary carried her own fully equipped print shop. Functioning under the direction of the ship’s purser, the print shop provided daily newspapers, programs of activities, and menus for the passengers.

Propellor Box

The Queen Mary had 4 massive propellers (or screws) to propel her through the waters at incredible speed. Each propeller was driven independently by its own turbine engine and was made of manganese bronze. The first set of propellers each measured 20 feet across and weighed 35 tons; however, these proved to produce too much vibration. The second set, and every set thereafter would consist of propellers that each measured 18.5 feet across, coming in at 32 tons each. The slightly smaller propellers proved much more effective to combat the vibration issue. In all, the Queen Mary would have 22 sets of propellers throughout her 31 years of sailing. Each time a new set would be installed, each of the propellers were so perfectly balanced that you could spin the massive propeller by hand! Visitors of the Propeller Box will be able to see the last remaining propeller on the ship.

Aft Steering

The Queen Mary had a number of backup systems to keep her functional. Aft Steering shows two redundant systems (one power steering system and one manual) by which the ship could still be steered, if her primary systems became inoperable. Additionally, visitors can also view the 3 massive electric generators, which powered the 2 hydraulic cylinders that pumped back and forth, turning the linkage which drove the rudder from side to side; thus, guiding the ship. The ship’s rudder was 3 stories tall and weighed 140 tons. At the time of its installation, this was the largest rudder ever installed on any ship!

Their Finest Hours: Winston Churchill and The Queen Mary

Learn about Winston Churchill’s relationship with the Queen which served as his sea borne war room during WWII. It is thought that Churchill traveled aboard the Queen Mary at least 10 times in both war and peace time. This exhibit includes original set pieces from the award-wining film, “Darkest Hours.” It is an in depth look into the person many consider to be the greatest statesman of the 20th century.

Sisters of the Sea

Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth, created by a ship enthusiast Tom Varney over the past 20 years. These two 8-foot beauties are 3/32” + 1-foot representations of the original liners each made of balsa wood. Walk around these works of art and marvel at these two sisters of the sea.

Are cheap holidays on offer because Russians can’t travel outside their country?

P roper package holidays in the middle of August for in the low £300s per person ? The giant tour operator Tui is putting plenty of good deals into the market for the next couple of weeks, such as a departure on Tuesday 13 August from Newcastle to Zante for £309.

Nothing is so perishable as a plane seat that departs empty and a hotel room that remains unoccupied. Holiday companies, with commitments of aircraft and accommodation, can cut prices for late sales to whatever is needed to fill the booking void.

But I have been reading speculation online that the reason so many cheap deals are available is because Russians cannot travel outside their country. Without these often high-spending customers, the argument goes, hotels are reducing rates.

Having looked at the evidence: there are plenty of cheap holidays around this August, unusually. And there are restrictions on where organised trips from Russia can go, as well as some red tape for individual Russian travellers. But in this case, correlation is certainly not causation.

Sure, some five-star hotels in cities such as Nice, Monaco and Venice will be missing their usual complements of high-spending Russian guests. In Turkey and Cyprus, too, some hoteliers may have offered improved rates to UK holiday companies to fill otherwise empty rooms. These countries were very popular with both Russians and Ukrainians before Vladimir Putin decided to invade his neighbour, and demand has dwindled from the countries currently at war.

Yet I am also seeing good value in places such as Benidorm and Lanzarote, which were not visited by significant numbers of tourists from Russia and Ukraine before the conflict began.

The availability of cheap holidays across southern Europe, from Cyprus to the Canaries, is mainly due to a slump in demand and an excess of supply. Since the end of the pandemic, holiday prices have soared. Tempted by big profit margins, companies have piled on capacity. But growing unwillingness by the travelling public to pay outlandish prices, combined with pressure on household budgets, means buyers need to be lured by cheaper deals.

Turning to Russian tourists: many people in the West believe they have been unable to travel beyond their borders since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. That is simply not true. Russian airlines are banned from most of Europe (and vice-versa). But there are plenty of destinations where Russians are definitely welcome.

I took a snapshot of a day’s arrivals at a key Mediterranean sunspot: Antalya in Turkey , gateway for the Turkish Riviera. During the first eight hours of Wednesday morning, there were more than 40 arrivals from Russia. Sixteen of them were from Moscow and five from St Petersburg. But there were a further three planes from each of Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Kazan and Ufa, and single arrivals from eight other cities.

For comparison, six planes touched down from the UK and 31 from Germany (with Cologne by far the largest source). On these figures and within that time frame, Russia is sending more holidaymakers to this part of the Mediterranean than the two biggest outbound markets in Western Europe combined.

Dubai is also very popular with Russians, with three arrivals from Moscow and others from Yekaterinburg and St Petersburg in the first eight hours of Wednesday. And while British travellers cannot currently fly nonstop to Phuket in Thailand, Russians can choose from departures from Moscow, St Petersburg and Irkutsk in Siberia to the Thai island.

So, for Russians who have not been dispatched by Putin to fight his brutal war on the deadly front line in Ukraine, there are plenty of holiday options.

Taylor Swift's Indianapolis Eras Tour shows drive record hotel, short-term rental demand

Portrait of Alysa Guffey

Four months out from the final concerts of Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour , short-term rentals and hotel vacancies are nearly booked for her stop in Indianapolis at the start of November, as out-of-town fans comprise the majority of ticket holders .

In the midst of a potentially record-breaking year for the city's tourism, Indianapolis hotels and short-term rentals have had extremely high demand throughout the year because of large one-off events such as the NBA All-Star Game in February, the total solar eclipse in April and the Olympic Swim Trials in June.

But no event in 2024 will bring as many visitors to Indy as the hundreds of thousands of Swifties, who will descend upon the city in November for three nights of sold-out shows at Lucas Oil Stadium .

Hotel rooms across the city are virtually sold out for that weekend at prices three times higher than those in 2023, said Chris Gahl, executive vice president of Visit Indy.

“We know 87% of those clutching a ticket to step inside Lucas Oil Stadium for the concerts are from outside the [metropolitan area,] another strong tourism indicator," Gahl said.

Short-term rental bookings are up 207% compared to last year during the same weekend, Gahl said.

The Circle City has seen a 7,000% surge in searches year-over-year for Airbnb short-term rentals during the first weekend in November, according to an Airbnb report on the impact of Swift's concerts . In comparison, Airbnb recorded a 2,000% surge in Indianapolis for the solar eclipse.

Search surges give an idea of how many people are considering a trip to a city during a specific date range. Airbnb does not track booking or occupancy rates due to a potential influx of supply as dates get closer. Plus, most short-term rentals can be cancelled just a few days before a stay.

How it happened: Indianapolis lands Taylor Swift second Eras swing in 2024

The statistics show the strength of Swiftie "passion tourism" that drives fans to travel to great lengths to see their favorite performer. Thousands of Americans have traveled to see Swift play in Europe, where tickets tend to be cheaper and more accessible, said Haven Thorn, a spokesperson for Airbnb.

"These are folks that are more interested in the 'what' than the 'where,' and they're traveling for Taylor Swift," Thorn said. "And Americans accounted for more than a third of all the bookings on Airbnb in Europe during her tour."

All three of Swift's Indianapolis shows at Lucas Oil, which can hold nearly 70,000 people, sold out almost immediately, meaning upwards of 200,000 fans will be in attendance over the course of the weekend for Swift's last concert in the United States.

Indianapolis' search surge is 14 times higher than it has been for rentals in Miami, which saw a 500 percent increase in searches during the weekend Swift will perform in October and twice as high as the surge for the final 2024 dates in Vancouver.

Hotel rooms going for more than $500 a night for Swift concert weekend

The frenzy of visitors booking stays for the concerts has created headaches for even the most meticulously planned trips by Swifties.

Gracie Smith already saw Taylor Swift live last year and the 25-year-old from Atlanta knew she had to see Swift again when she announced more U.S. stops at the end of 2024.

After persuading her sister, cousin and aunt to accompany her to Indianapolis, Smith searched for hotels that were close enough to walk to the stadium, as the group would not have a car over the weekend, and eventually settled on a room at the Sheraton downtown. They booked it for $457 per night, more than Smith's initial budget.

Then in January, the group's room was spontaneously cancelled and a review of bank statements showed no charge was ever attempted for the room.

Scrambling, Smith and her relatives called the hotel every day for a month in search of an explanation. Eventually, Marriott offered them a room at another Marriott-owned hotel, the Courtyard Marriott near Victory Field.

Their new room was roughly $120 more per night, making their nightly hotel cost almost $600. Smith said she has seen firsthand how prices to see Swift have soared since her last tour in 2018, when Smith traveled to Dallas for a concert.

"We thought that it was expensive in 2018, but now we look back at it and think 'Dang, we really should have taken advantage of it," she said.

Indiana Airbnbs: Whether you're bringing a date or book, these cozy Indiana Airbnbs could be right for you

How much would going to a Taylor Swift concert cost?

Any out-of-town fans scoring last minute tickets and travel will face limited options and hefty prices for lodging, though there is still some availability.

On Tuesday, Airbnb search results showed the cheapest price for a two-night stay that November weekend at $188 for a private room in a residence and more than $400 for an entire unit in or near Indianapolis.

Meanwhile, the cheapest hotel room for two people is more than $500 per night after fees, based on prices pulled from an Expedia search on Tuesday.

Currently, the cheapest concert tickets are at least $2,000 apiece on ticket resale sites.

1 Assembly Room

Gather in the grand social room on the ground floor of Casa Grande just as W. R. Hearst’s guests did decades ago for cocktails, conversation, and to meet their host. Admire the magnificent room’s walnut paneling,  Renaissance and Baroque tapestries and masterpieces of neoclassical sculpture.

2 Refectory

Mr. Hearst and architect Julia Morgan named the dining room after the word for a monastery’s dining hall. Its high windows, bright silk banners, and gleaming silver candlesticks convey the atmosphere of the Middle Ages, but the mustard and ketchup bottles show that Mr. Hearst liked to keep things informal at his ranch.

3 Billiard Room

The Billiard Room was a popular spot, where guests could relax and play both billiards and pool. This room is decorated with a variety of gaming themes, but it also boasts a 15th century Spanish ceiling painted with scenes of courtly life, in addition to a Flemish tapestry from 1500.

The Theater is where W. R. Hearst and Hollywood film star Marion Davies joined guests every night to watch a full-length movie and newsreel. Today, as a guest of the Castle, you’ll be able to view historic Castle footage with moving images of Mr. Hearst and his guests.

5 The Gardens

“La Cuesta Encantada”—Hearst’s Spanish name for The Enchanted Hill. Look for native plants, rare flowers and lush foliage that have been at the Castle since Mr. Hearst resided here.

6 Roman Pool

Located where you board the bus to return to the Visitor Center, the intensely decorated indoor Roman Pool is the perfect place to stop and relax. Modeled after ancient Roman baths, this meticulously detailed, majestic pool is tiled from ceiling to floor, and features marble copies of eight ancient Greek and Roman deities and athletes.
