questions tour de france

It now seems like an age since the Tour de France 's Grand Départ in Utrecht on July 4, and with just two racing stages plus the ceremonial procession through Paris left, Chris Froome is looking good for his second yellow jersey.

But long before the Kenyan-born Brit made headlines with his help towards/challenge of Bradley Wiggins 's win in 2012, many hundreds of riders had taken part in the Grande Boucle.

"The physical limits and pain that those guys put themselves through over three weeks' racing is simply staggering. Just riding a bicycle for five hours is hard enough, but then when you see the speed they do it at, it is breathtaking. Seven Questions From a Wild Third Week of the Tour de France

From dominating teams to doping, here’s what we’re thinking about now that the Tour has wrapped up.

107th tour de france 2020 stage 21

The 2020 Tour de France reached Paris on Sunday, despite some doubts about whether the race would be able to go on amid the coronavirus pandemic. (Spoiler alert: no riders tested positive for COVID-19!) After a bruising Stage 20 time trial , when he stole the yellow jersey, Tadej Pogačar climbed atop the podium after the ride into Paris, followed by Primož Roglič and Richie Porte.

Here are seven questions we have from the final week of racing...

Were the Crosswinds Decisive In a Way We Didn’t Consider?

As previously noted , it’s common for crosswinds to upend the Tour de France by causing some contenders to lose time when they’re caught on the wrong side of the split field. This year, Pogačar was one of the unfortunates. But in the final reckoning, his 1:21 loss on Stage 7 may have actually helped him.

Pogačar rode aggressively in the mountains to steadily chip away at Roglič’s lead and only lost time on one stage in the race’s final week. But without the crosswind deficit, he would have taken yellow with his Stage 9 win, instead of Roglič—and that would have changed the race.

When Roglič took yellow, his Jumbo-Visma team controlled for much of the race’s second half. But Pogačar’s UAE-Emirates team was considerably weaker: Fabio Aru didn’t finish stage 9, Davide Formolo crashed out two days later, and Stage 1 winner Alexander Kristoff is a sprinter, not a climber. That left Pogačar isolated on most mountain stages.

Had UAE-Emirates been forced to defend a lead, Jumbo might have been more aggressive attacking the Tour rookie. As it turned out, lurking close behind Roglič and taking yellow on the penultimate day was the best possible scenario for Pogačar.

Will Pogacar’s Win Create a Third Super Team?

107th tour de france 2020 stage 21

Entering the 2020 Tour, the conventional wisdom was it would be a battle between the two strongest teams in the race: Jumbo-Visma, and the INEOS Grenadiers team of defending champion Egan Bernal. Each team has multiple Grand Tour winners on its roster. That heavyweight matchup never quite materialized: INEOS left past Tour winners Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas off the roster since they were judged not to be in proper shape, and back trouble eventually forced Bernal from the race .

Pogačar’s win could embolden his UAE-Emirates team to give him that support. So far, UAE has been fairly quiet on the transfer front, with just one known new signing for 2021 (Matteo Trentin). But COVID-19 has delayed the usual spring/summer contract negotiations, which may now work in the team’s favor. Almost half their riders lack a contract for 2021, while there’s still significant talent from other teams looking for contracts, including INEOS super- equipier Michal Kwiatkowski and his teammate, the promising young Pavel Sivakov; top climber Rafal Majka (Bora-Hansgrohe); and Miguel Ángel López, who will not be returning to Astana.

As INEOS and Jumbo have shown, there’s room at one team for multiple Grand Tour aspirants if the money and leadership opportunities are there, and one thing the Emirates don’t worry much about is money. Another non-issue? Pogačar himself, who’s reportedly under contract through 2024.

Is Peter Sagan’s Green Jersey Dominance Done?

107th tour de france 2020 stage 20

For the first time in nine entries, Sagan finished a Tour without wearing the green jersey of the race’s points competition winner (“best sprinter” for shorthand). The only other year he didn’t wear green in Paris was 2017, when he got DQ’d on Stage 4 for a tangle with Mark Cavendish that crashed the Brit out of the race.

It’s might be tempting to point to his Stage 11 penalty for his loss this time around. Prior to the relegation, he was locked in a tight battle with Sam Bennett for green, but the punishment—a loss of his Stage 11 finish and intermediate sprint points due to relegation—put him in a deep hole, 68 points down.

Sagan clawed back 25 points of his deficit by Stage 14, but after that, Bennett steadily pushed the gap back out thanks to vigilant riding by his team, and simply being the better sprinter, whether at intermediate sprint points or finishes. The final margin? 96 points.

As well, Sagan was a touch off his usual game. In the past, he’s been able to capitalize on a number of top-10 finishes on sprint stages and hillier courses. This year, it’s too early to say what happened. Maybe it was the breakaways that soaked up sprint points, and maybe it was a mechanical that cost him a top placing on Stage 7, a day when Bennett had been dropped (“that’s fucking cycling” Sagan said afterward).

Sagan and Bennett are close in age, but have had far different career trajectories; Sagan joined racing’s top level in 2010, while Bennett, just a year younger, developed more slowly and signed his first WorldTour contract only in 2017. While only a year apart in age, it’s possible that Sagan’s higher mileage is starting to show in his finishing speed.

When Will France Compete for a Tour Win?

107th tour de france 2020 stage 20

Entering the Tour, host nation France had high hopes for success and—dare they dream—an end to the 34-year drought of an overall French winner. Things started reasonably well: aside from Thibaut Pinot’s Stage 1 crash, French riders won two stages in the opening week, took yellow with Julian Alaphilippe, and had Guillaume Martin and Romain Bardet in the top five overall.

But Alaphilippe lost his yellow to a penalty on Stage 5. Then Pinot imploded in the Pyrenees as the effects of his crash became fully apparent. Bardet dropped out a week later after a crash of his own left him with a concussion, while Guillaume finally cracked in the Massif Central, had a supremely ill-timed flat on a summit finish, and was unable to recover.

France’s Tour wasn’t a disaster by any stretch. But it wasn’t what they hoped, and the future is cloudy: Bardet and Pinot will be 30 and 31, respectively, in 2021. Alaphilippe’s stunning 2019 Tour is likely a one-off he won’t repeat. Martin made incremental improvement from last year, but likely won’t find the support he needs for a podium shot on the underfunded Cofidis squad.

As for the talent pipeline, 23-year-old David Gaudu is one of the most promising young French pros, and there are a few other solid talents in lower-division teams. Sometimes riders take more time to develop (Alaphilippe is a great example). But if there’s an heir to Bernard Hinault among France’s young riders, he has yet to reveal himself.

Out With The Old, In With The New?

107th tour de france 2020 stage 21

In fact, of the old-guard powers of the sport—France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, and The Netherlands—France managed better than most. Spain riders finished fourth and fifth overall in the general classification, but failed to win a stage. Italy similarly struck out, and managed just ninth as its best overall placing. Wout van Aert was singlehandedly responsible for Belgium’s success, while the highlight of Dutch riders’ Tour was Tom Dumoulin’s support of Primoż Roglič’s ultimately unsuccessful bid for the win.

Traditional cycling powers won four stages and minor podium placings in the secondary jersey competitions. But the big spoils went to riders from less-traditional countries, who took all the jerseys, the podium spots, and 14 stage wins. Slovenia obviously gets top billing for the 1-2 finish of Pogačar-Roglič. That duo also took four stages and, for Pogačar, the white and polka-dot jerseys in addition to yellow.

But Scandinavian countries did well behind three stage wins (Dane Søren Kragh Andersen took two, while Norwegian sprinter Alexander Kristoff opened with a stage win and day in yellow). Colombia took two stages, while Ireland’s Sam Bennett got two stage wins and the green jersey, and Poland and Kazakhstan each had a rider win a stage.

Will Doping Overshadow the Race Again?

107th tour de france 2020 stage 17

After the race finished in Paris, news emerged that French authorities had searched the hotel of one team, Arkéa Samsic, and questioned riders and staff, including leader Nairo Quintana. Authorities also arrested two team staffers.

Elsewhere in Europe, investigators said in September that they’d uncovered evidence of a synthetic hemoglobin doping product in connection with Operation Aderlass, a sports-doping inquiry that involves numerous people in pro cycling.

And there are questions about Pogačar as well, stemming from both his team and his own race-shattering performances on two stages. On those days, Stage 9 and Stage 20, Pogačar sustained power outputs at a level only attained in the past by riders who doped. Pogačar broke a nearly 20-year-old climbing speed record on the Col du Peyresourde, set by Alexandre Vinokourov, who later tested positive for blood doping in the 2007 Tour.

And Pogačar’s team, UAE-Emirates, is run by two men with past links to doping. CEO Mauro Gianetti and Team Manager Joxean Fernandez ran the Saunier Duval-Scott team in 2008 when two riders, Riccardo Ricco and Leonardo Piepoli, tested positive for a long-acting version of EPO. Gianetti’s former teammate from that time, Stephane Heulot, who also later worked for Saunier Duval, said in 2008 that Gianetti was incapable of changing, a comment he reiterated this year to Ouest France . He also told le Parisien “that people like [Gianetti] are still in cycling today is unthinkable.”

It remains to be seen what comes of the Arkea and Operation Aderlass investigations. In Pogačar’s case, the circumstantial evidence against him isn’t entirely fair, but in pro cycling’s past, association has been a key factor in doping cases, and as long as people like Fernandez and Gianetti are around the sport, questions will continue.

Will Pro Cycling Face Its Racial Equity Problem?

cycling fra tdf2020 stage21

On the final stage of the Tour, some riders wrote anti-racism slogans on the masks they wear before taking the start, and Kevin Reza, the only Black rider in the Tour peloton , briefly rode at the front of the race. But the gesture was fleeting, which led to criticism of its sincerity; as Reza himself said in a Eurosport interview that minced few words, cycling has long been behind other sports in its commitment to racial equity and developing Black athletes—currently there are just a handful in the WorldTour. (Reza himself has been the target of at least two incidents where riders used racist language toward him, and discipline in those cases has been wantingly short.)

Reza was gracious, and thanked the ASO for letting him ride on the front, but the brief spotlight the race showed on racism seemed small and late, and rushed in its consideration. While it was encouraging to see some white riders, like Tejay van Garderen, speaking out more forcefully, the race’s gesture still felt like a missed opportunity. The Tour is cycling’s most prominent event; the failure to make a bigger statement, or to really even consider one until prompted, says a lot about how much work pro cycling has to do.

questions tour de france

There's a bit of mystique surrounding the Tour de France.

What started as a marketing ploy for a local newspaper in 1903, the Tour de France has exploded into a worldwide phenomenon with a viewership now exceeding 3.5 billion people.

Yes, you read that right—3.5 billion people watch spandex-clad men with shaved legs ride bikes around France for hours on end.

At ACTIVE, we can't get enough of the Tour; it's our favorite time of the year. There's nothing like sitting back, cheering on your favorite teams and watching some of the fittest athletes in the world do what they do best.

If you've ever watched a stage, you know how impressive it really is, and if you haven't, make sure you tune into this year's edition. There's always drama and mid-race fireworks as the peloton makes its way to the Champs-Élysées.

Because the Tour (and bike racing in general) isn't a mainstream sport in the United States, we get asked lots of questions as cycling's biggest race rolls around every year. And we've addressed some of our most-asked questions that will help give you some context in time for the Grand Départ.

Q: How many American cyclists have won the Tour de France? A: This answer is a bit sticky. If you look at the record books, only one American has won the Tour—Greg LeMond in 1986, 1989 and 1990. Lance Armstrong also won the Tour (seven times from 1999 through 2005) but was stripped of those titles after admitting to doping in each. American Floyd Landis won in 2006, but like Armstrong, was stripped of his title.

Q: How many calories do Tour de France cyclists eat? A: The short answer? A lot. Riders burn around 4,000 to 5,000 calories each stage of the tour, so they have to consume around 8,000 calories a day. What does 8,000 look like?  Check out our article that breaks down each meal the average Tour de France cyclist eats.

Q: Can women compete in the Tour de France? A: A woman has never competed in the Tour de France, but there is currently a one-day race for women hosted by the same organizing body as the Tour. It's called La Course, and it's awesome—we highly recommend you check it out.

Q: How much does a Tour de France bike cost? A: Before we reveal this answer, we advise you sit down. An average bike ridden by a professional in the Tour de France costs (drum roll, please)...anywhere between $11,000 and $13,000, depending on the stage and the model. For more information, be sure to check out our article, "How Much Does a Tour de France Bike Cost?"

Q: What are the rules for Tour de France bikes?   A: The UCI (cycling's governing body) has placed strict limits on bikes ridden in the Tour de France. There are lots of rules, but here are a few of the important ones: A bike can't weigh any less than 14.99 pounds (so yes, amateur cyclists can buy bikes lighter than those ridden in the Tour), wheels must have a minimum of 12 spokes and the frame must be built around a main triangle (no beam bikes). Bikes are sporadically checked by race officials prior to stage starts.

Q: How often are Tour de France riders drug tested? A: It varies, and riders contending for the podium are tested more than others. All riders undergo a blood test prior to the start of the Tour, and a random six athletes can be tested (either urine or blood) at the finish line and at the hotels after the stages. The stage winner and race leader is tested every day.

Q: How do Tour de France cyclists pee? A: This is gross, but remember, you asked. Tour de France cyclists usually pee a couple of times during the race, and this usually happens in the first hour of the race when the peloton pulls over for a quick stop. Riders have also been known to pee while riding if the pace is too quick to afford a stop. If you're wondering about No. 2, that's a different story. Some cyclists have been caught pulling over and using a spectator's motorhome or even pulling off the side of the road and taking care of business in an open field.

Q: Has anyone died during the Tour de France? A: Cycling has always been a dangerous sport, and with these risks come unfortunate accidents. A total of four cyclists have died during the Tour: Adolphe Heliere (1910), Francisco Cepeda (1934), Tom Simpson (1967) and Fabio Casartelli (1995).

Q: Who holds the record for the most Tour de France stage wins? A: Legendary cyclist Eddy Merckx (Belgium) holds the record for the most Tour de France stage wins with 34. The "Manx Missile" Mark Cavendish (United Kingdom) is second with 30 wins, and Bernard Hinault (France) is third with 28 wins to his name.

Q: How much does the Tour de France winner make? A: Besides their salary (which ranges from around $40k to $2 million a year), the winner of the Tour earns about 500,000 Euros. The runner-up earns 200,000 Euros and the final podium finisher earns 100,000 Euros. This prize money is technically the individual's money, but it's usually split between the team riders and staff.

Q: How many riders are in the Tour de France? A: This varies year to year, but the 2018 Tour de France featured 22 teams and a total of 176 riders. Over 30 riders abandoned during the course of the race, either due to mechanical issues, crashes, illness or missing the time cut.

Q: How long is the Tour de France? A: The distance the Tour covers varies from year to year. The longest Tour de France was in 1926 and consisted of 17 stages for a total of 5,745 kilometers. The 2019 edition celebrates 100 years of the maillot jaune (yellow jersey) and consists of 21 stages and 3,460 kilometers.

14 Questions You’ve Always Had About The Tour de France

How riders pee on the bike, the age of the youngest winner - no matter what your questions are about the Tour de France, we’ve got your back.

questions tour de france

Let’s be honest: Pro cycling is difficult to watch and enjoy without some basic knowledge. But once you’ve figured out the essential logistics – What’s up with the jersey colours? What’s a breakaway? Which channel is this race even on? – a few more nuanced questions still linger. Here are answers to 14 things you’ve likely wondered about the Tour de France , which we hope get you thinking about even more questions!

tour-de-france-pee-break

How do Tour de France Riders pee?

Long, hot, July days mean the pros are hydrating a lot on the bike, which means bathroom breaks are inevitable.

In the first five to 10 minutes of a race, when the pace is more leisurely, “riders pull to the side of the road, pull their shorts down just like you would underwear – you know, pull front down, do your business,” says retired pro cyclist Ted King, who’s ridden the Tour de France several times. During this neutral roll out, King says, there’s plenty of time to catch back on to the peloton before the race starts in earnest .

Once the pace picks up, riders still use this tactic to pee while racing. “It’s a lot easier to wait for a lull in the race when a big fraction of the peloton pulls to the side of the road rather than doing it solo, because that solo chase is tough!” King says.

But nature calling doesn’t mean riders even have to slow down: You can also pee off the bike while riding. (Too much information? Maybe, but now you’ll know why riders sometimes look awkward when they’re coasting.) “If peeing to the right, your right leg is in a 6 o’clock position, left at 12. Left hand on the handlebars, right hand holds the shorts down, and coast while relieving yourself,” King advises.

anquetil-tour

Who’s won the most Tours de France?

That depends whether you’re counting titles that have been taken away (cough— Lance —cough). If you’re not, says Christopher Thompson, author of The Tour de France: A Cultural History , the answer is a four-way tie between Jacques Anquetil, Miguel Indurain, Eddy Merckx, and Bernard Hinault. They’re in good company.

wwii-tour

Has the Tour ever not happened since it started in 1903?

Only the two World Wars caused the race to be put on hold, says Thompson. All in all, battles cost the world 11 editions of the Tour: WWI broke out a few days after the 1914 Tour, he says, and didn’t run again until 1919; it again went on hiatus during WWII from 1940 to 1946, running again in 1947—two years after the end of the war .

“WWI was a war of attrition and the French were fighting the whole time—and there were several Tour winners who were killed in the trenches,” he says. “But in WWII, France was defeated and occupied quite early, and that was different. There was a government that went along with the Nazis, so there was some racing to prove that things were normal under the occupation, but the Tour wasn’t held. After, France was so devastated by WWII that it took a while to get restarted.”

lauto-tour

Why is the leader’s jersey yellow?

Simple, says Thompson: L’Auto , the newspaper that first started and sponsored the race, was printed on yellow paper, so it was essentially an advertising strategy. (That’s also why the Giro d’Italia leader’s jersey is pink—the newspaper that created the Giro was printed on pink paper.)

aso-jean-etienne_amaury

WTF is ASO?

The Tour de France isn’t run by L’Auto anymore, but current organiser Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) is still part of a media group Éditions Philippe Amaury (EPA). ASO also organises the Vuelta a España and Paris-Nice.

cemetery-tour

Has anyone died in the Tour?

Sadly, four riders have passed away over the course of the race’s history. In 1910, Adolphe Heliére drowned on a rest day; in 1934, Francisco Cepeda crashed into a ravine on a descent; in 1967, Tom Simpson passed away after a heart attack; and in 1995, Fabio Casartelli was killed after crashing and hitting his head.

rest-day-tour

What do Tour riders do on rest days?

They ride! At least, they go for short rides to keep their legs from cramping up.

Max Testa, MD, chief medical officer for Team BMC and former team doctor with 7-Eleven and Motorola, says that the short rides (which can be up to three hours for Tour racers!) help keep inflammation at bay and keep muscles ready for another hard day in the saddle.

la-course-tour

Why isn’t there a women’s Tour de France?

“Many Europeans define sport—especially a difficult sport like cycling—as a masculine thing, only something hyper-virile men were capable of,” Thompson says. “So even as women were getting into sport—running, tennis—European cycling remained a male monopoly with rare exceptions.”

There was a women’s Tour in the ’80s, but it was short-lived. Today, there is a women’s race during the Tour called La Course, but it’s a one-day only event on the last day of Tour racing. But never say never.

watch_the_tour

How many people watch the Tour?

According to the organisers, 3.5 billion people tune in to watch the Tour each year, in 190 countries. (To put that into perspective, the Superbowl is only watched by 114.4 million viewers.)

cornet-tour

How old was the oldest Tour de France racer, and how young was the youngest?

Both distinctions occurred in 1904: Henri Paret was the oldest competitor at age 50 when he competed in 1904, while 20-year-old Henri Cornet was the youngest. Cornet was also the youngest winner. The oldest winner was in 1922, when 36-year-old Belgian Firmin Lambot took the yellow jersey.

romain

Do TDF racers make their stage data public?

Sometimes—but don’t count on all of them to spend their evenings uploading. Still, you can keep an eye on some top pros’ Strava accounts: Here are the ones associated with Taylor Phinney, Laurens ten Dam, Thibaut Pinot, Romain Bardet and Andre Greipel.

tdf-tire

What tyre pressure do the pros run at the Tour?

Every racer and mechanic has a specific (usually top-secret) tyre pressure that he or she considers to be the ‘best,’ but there are some general guidelines.

Garmin-Sharp’s mechanic Geoff Brown told Bicycling ,” In general, with all of those variables [like weather and riders’ personal preference], that tyre pressure is 8 to 8.5 bar for the road stages, and then 9.5 to 10 bar for the time-trial stages. And we drop that by 10 or 15 for rainy days.”

They run about 0.5 bar lower in the front for more control as well, and with tubular tyres, they tend to run slightly lower pressures. Clinchers need to be kept around 7.5 to 8.5 bar in order to avoid pinch-flatting.

ag2r_road

How much do Tour de France bikes weigh?

In the 1900s, the bikes that Tour de France cyclists pedaled up and down mountains weighed in at a whopping 18kg each. In fact, Fiets,  a Dutch cycling magazine, showcased a bike from the 1903 race weighing in at 18kg… with a fixed gear. Today, bikes weigh in at just under 7kg—but not any lower, since the UCI’s minimum bike weight is 6.8kg.

_mg_6303

Why aren’t there more South Africans in the Tour?

While there isn’t a definitive answer to this, in part, there are fewer Saffers in the Tour because cycling has historically been more of a pastime than a competitive endeavour here in South Africa. Compared to Europe, where children are groomed for competitive racing from a young age, it’s hard for South African racers to compete. Added to that, the cost of competing is higher: Racers need to go where the big races are, and that almost always means moving to Europe.

Tadej Pogacar answers doping question after dominant Tour de France win: ‘There will always be doubts’

Tadej Pogacar celebrates after crossing the line on stage 21

Tadej Pogacar has admitted “there will always be doubts” about his credibility as a clean rider after dominating the 2024 Tour de France to win his third yellow jersey.

Pogacar blew away his rivals one last time on Sunday to win the stage 21 time-trial from Monaco to Nice by more than a minute. It was his sixth stage win of the Tour – the most collected by the champion since Bernard Hinault in 1979 – and capped a historic Giro-Tour double.

His dominance prompted some doubts on social media about the credibility of his performances, and that talk intensified last week after an investigation by Escape Collective revealed how elite teams are using controversial carbon monoxide rebreathing equipment in altitude training camps.

The equipment could be used for performance enhancement, although it is not banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency and three teams – Visma, UAE Emirates and Israel Premier Tech – insisted they use it only for measuring training performance. Both Pogacar and his main rival Jonas Vingegaard said it had only been used for diagnostic purposes.

It also didn’t help when Lance Armstrong, who was stripped of his seven Tour titles for cheating, warned that Pogacar should reel in his attacking style so as to avoid speculation. “I would advise him to lay low a bit more,” Armstrong said last week. “Sometimes you have to think about perception and image.”

Pogacar, who has never failed an anti-doping test, has been rigorously tested throughout this Tour, where the International Testing Agency has conducted what it called “one of the most comprehensive anti-doping programmes” ever implemented, collecting around 600 blood and urine samples through the race.

“There will always be doubts,” Pogacar said on Sunday after winning the time-trial. “Because of cycling before my time, in any sport, if someone is winning, there’s always jealousy and haters ... I tell you now, it’s not worth it. Taking anything to risk your health is stupid.”

No rider has completed the Giro-Tour double since the late Marco Pantani in 1998, and Pogacar became only the eighth rider to achieve the feat.

“I think this is the first Grand Tour where I was totally confident every day, even in the Giro I remember I had one bad day I won’t tell which one,” Pogacar said. “This year’s Tour de France was just amazing and I was enjoying it since day one until today.”

Pogacar has suffered at the hands of his Vingegaard in the past two editions, who collected back-to-back yellow jerseys in 2022 and 2023, but a serious crash in April hampered the Dane’s preparation and he could not live with Pogacar’s strength on the climbs.

Vingegaard revealed he would not ride the Vuelta a Espana after giving everything at the Tour so soon after his injuries.

“Under normal circumstances, I would be disappointed with my Tour de France,” Vingegaard said. “But, after everything I’ve gone through, I can’t be disappointed. I would have loved to go a bit further, but it is what it is. I would like to come back to the Tour de France and win it again ... I believe the yellow jersey is the most beautiful jersey in road cycling.”
