Artemis i travel essentials: the ultimate personal tour guide for your trip to the moon.

The headshot image of Michael Bock

Michael Bock

1.) get your passport and look up your boarding pass , 2.) do a little research , 3.) pack for your trip , 4.) check out your accommodations , 5.) plot your route , 6.) before you leave… .

The Moon. Earth’s most famous natural satellite … and your new travel destination.

From its wide vistas and secluded craters, to its unbeatable views of our own planet, visiting the Moon is a must-see for every well-seasoned space traveler’s bucket list. Lunar adventures have been quite popular among uncrewed spacecraft in recent years, but it’s been a generation since humans have set foot on the lunar surface. That is changing with NASA’s Artemis missions.

This year, NASA is embarking on an exciting journey to the Moon—and we’re inviting you to come along*.

Artemis I  is an uncrewed flight test that will lay the foundation for a sustained long-term presence on and around the Moon. Launching this summer, the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and integrated Orion spacecraft will help us get a feel for what astronauts will experience on future flights. Artemis I is an important step in NASA’s long-term goals for space exploration, paving the way for us to land the first woman and the first person of color on the Moon, explore more of the lunar surface than ever before — and prepare to travel on to Mars.

This handy travel guide is designed to help everyone from space travel rookies to seasoned galactic explorers figure out exactly what to see, what to bring, and how to get ready as we return to the Moon.

Before you book your ticket, make you sure you get your Artemis passport ready! Join the virtual guest list for Artemis launches and receive a special Artemis I virtual guest passport and stamp after launch along with mission updates and interactive opportunities. Over 300,000+ virtual guests from around the world have already joined!

If you were one of the 3 million people who submitted your name to be flown around the Moon aboard the Orion spacecraft, you can look up your boarding pass and print or download it at your leisure. If you didn’t submit your name, don’t worry — you can still download and fill out a blank boarding pass!

Artemis I artist's concept - Earth Departure

Since you’re headed to the Moon, here is your opportunity to check out images and content about the Moon and then create your own! Submit your #NASAMoonSnap and we will be featuring some entries during the launch broadcast or on NASA’s social media.

Artemis I will blast off from NASA’s spaceport at Kennedy Space Center and fly farther than any spacecraft built for humans has ever flown. Watch a preview of your flight to get the highlights of the mission.

You’ve got your papers sorted — now it’s time to put together your packing list ! Take a look at what others have decided they would pack for the Moon, including astronauts , NASA photographers , and other creative people like you !

Grab some reading materials. While you’re sure to get some incredible window views as the Orion spacecraft travels thousands of miles beyond the Moon, you’ll likely want some entertainment during the 4-6 week mission. If you’re looking for some reading material, check the First Woman graphic novel, the You Are Going children’s book, and the Moonikin webcomic .

And set a playlist.  No trip is complete without a playlist! Check out the NASA Moon Tunes playlist put together by Third Rock Radio and compiled from over a million votes all around the world. And if podcasts are more your speed, check out this curated Artemis podcast playlist on Soundcloud.

You’ll be flying in comfort aboard Orion, the spacecraft that will take astronauts to the Moon on future Artemis missions. Among the science, research equipment, and mementos you’ll be travelling with are Commander Moonikin Campos, Helga, and Zohar. These human-bodied manikins are gathering important data for future missions— read their story here .

Following along at home? You can decorate the walls of your own ‘crew cabin’ with our beautiful travel destination posters :

Download Artemis: Visionary (8.07 MB) | Download Artemis: Courageous (7.31 MB) | Download Artemis: Galvanizing (8.98 MB)

Before heading out, you’ll want to familiarize yourself with your route . That’s why we’ve put together a flight map with important milestones you’ll reach on your trip beyond the Moon and back.

Our travel itinerary will bring us within about 60 miles of the Moon’s surface—a prime opportunity for sightseeing.  Learn more about your destination   on our Moon site .

Can’t wait to see the SLS rocket on the launch pad? Picture it in your own backyard! Try out our Snapchat AR Lens: Backyard Rocket and see how the launch would appear from the mission control room at Kennedy Space Center.

And know where to track your flight . Once you’re on your way to join the Artemis I mission, you can follow along with telemetry updates and see exactly where Orion is every step of the journey.

However you choose to follow along our journey, we’re glad to have you with us.  Be sure to follow @NASAArtemis on Facebook , Twitter , and Instagram , or subscribe to our newsletter to get the latest updates as we prepare for our next great era of discovery.

* DISCLAIMER: As much as we’d like to bring everyone aboard Orion for a flight around the Moon, Artemis I is an uncrewed mission. So please enjoy the next best thing: free and fun activities that you can participate in from the comfort of your own home.

  • By Larisha Paul

Larisha Paul

Kid Cudi is heading to the moon on his upcoming tour, kind of. The rapper’s newly announced To the Moon world tour unfortunately shares a name with an idiotic and unrelated crypto-bro phrase, so let’s just imagine that he’s getting a moon landing of his own.

Scheduled for 27 cities across North America, Asia, and Europe, the tour will begin on Aug. 16 at Vancouver’s Rogers Arena. Cudi will travel through Portland, Oakland, Denver, Miami, Atlanta, Brooklyn, Toronto, Chicago, and more cities. Tickets for the To the Moon tour go on sale Friday, June 24 at 10 a.m. local time via the official Kid Cudi website . The tour will be supported by Don Toliver and Strick on all dates. Denzel Curry and 070 Shake will support select shows.

The North American leg of the tour wraps on Sept. 17 with his inaugural Moon Man’s Landing festival in his hometown of Cleveland. The festival will feature appearances by Playboi Carti, HAIM, Dominic Fike, Pusha T, Jaden, and more performers.

Cudi recently dropped “ Do What I Want ,” the lead single to his long-awaited studio album Entergalactic set for release later this year. The record will accompany his forthcoming animated music series of the same name arriving to Netflix on Sept. 30 with cast appearances from Timothée Chalamet, Vanessa Hudgens, Teyana Taylor, Macaulay Culkin, and others.

About the Moon's Phases

What are moon phases.

As the Moon orbits around Earth and Earth orbits around the Sun, the angle between the Sun, Moon, and Earth changes. As a result, the amount of sunlight that reflects off the Moon and travels to our eyes changes every day. (The Moon itself produces no light of its own.)

We see the Moon’s disk change from all dark to all light to all dark again: This span of time is called a lunar cycle , lunation , lunar month , or synodic month . The length of the cycle can vary slightly, but on average, it is 29.53059 days. (See “What’s the Moon’s Age?” below for more information.)

Astronomers have broken down this cycle into four primary Moon phases: New Moon , First Quarter , Full Moon , and Last Quarter . There are also four secondary phases: Waxing Crescent , Waxing Gibbous , Waning Gibbous , and Waning Crescent . The primary phases occur at a specific moment, no matter where you are on Earth, which is then converted to local time. (Depending on where you live, you may or may not be able to see the exact moment of a phase, in part because the Moon may not have risen yet in your area.) The secondary phases, however, represent a span of time rather than a specific moment.

Image of new moon

This phase is named as such because it starts a new lunar cycle. At this time, the Sun and Moon are in conjunction, meaning that they are closest together in the sky, on the same side of Earth (Sun→Moon→Earth). From our perspective, the Moon appears totally dark: We can not usually see it because we are facing the Moon’s shadowed side, which does not receive any direct sunlight. But if we were to travel to the other side of the Moon, the part that faces the Sun, it would be totally illuminated.

Occasionally, if the new Moon’s position lines up correctly between the Sun and Earth, from our viewpoint it will cover part or all of the Sun’s disk, causing a solar eclipse . These events are only visible from a small portion of Earth and require special eye protection to be viewed safely. ( Read more about solar eclipses here !)

The months of some calendars, such as the Chinese lunisolar calendar, begin at the time of the new (or dark) Moon.

• Waxing Crescent

Image of waxing crescent moon

Some lunar and lunisolar calendars, such as the Islamic (or Hijri) calendar, define the start of a month as when the Moon first becomes visible, which is usually a day or so after the new Moon, during its waxing crescent stage.

• First Quarter

Image of first quarter moon

• Waxing Gibbous

Image of waxing gibbous moon

“Gibbous” comes from a Latin word meaning “humpbacked,” referring to the curved lit area on the Moon’s surface.

• Full Moon

Image of full moon

This phase is named as such because, from our perspective, the full disk is illuminated. At this time, the Sun and Moon are in opposition, meaning that they are farthest apart in the sky, on opposite sides of Earth (Sun→Earth→Moon).

Occasionally, if the full Moon’s position lines up correctly with the Sun and Earth, from our viewpoint, the Moon will enter the Earth’s shadow, which will cut off part or all of the sunlight reflected off the Moon’s surface, thereby causing a lunar eclipse . What Is the Moon’s Age?

The term " Moon's age " is not a reference to how long the Moon has existed (about 4.5 billion years, if you're wondering), but rather how many days it's been since the last new Moon. As mentioned above, the span of time between one new Moon and the next is called a lunar cycle , lunation , lunar month , or synodic month and on average lasts for 29.53059 days. This translates to 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes, and 3 seconds.

For most dates in the above Moon Phase Calendar, there is listed at the bottom of the grid cell a number of days, such as “18 days.” This tells us the amount of days since the previous new Moon, or in other words, how many days into the lunar cycle we are—aka, the Moon's age. So, at the new Moon, that day is “0” (not labeled); the next day, 1 day has passed; and onward until 29 days pass and we are at the next new Moon. You can also find this information in the print edition of The Old Farmer’s Almanac , in the last (right) column of the Left-Hand Calendar Pages.

The length of a lunar cycle can vary by more than 13 hours due to a few factors. For example, when the new Moon phase occurs at about the same the time as perigee (the point in the Moon’s elliptical orbit that is closest to Earth), shorter lunations result. When the new Moon phase occurs at about the same time as apogee (when the Moon is farthest from Earth), longer lunations result. This is related to the fact that the Moon travels faster in its orbit at perigee and slowest in its orbit at apogee.

Earth’s relative position near perihelion (point in Earth’s orbit that is closest to the Sun) and aphelion (when Earth is farthest from the Sun) also affect lunation times. The longest lunations result when the new Moon coincides with apogee, and Earth is at perihelion. The shortest lunations result when the new Moon coincides with perigee, and Earth is at aphelion.

One of the shortest lunations was 29 days, 6 hours, and 35 minutes, whereas one of the longest was 29 days, 19 hours, 55 minutes.

Note: The synodic month describes the time for the Moon to complete one orbit around Earth and return to the same position relative to the Sun and Earth. If Earth were not moving along in its orbit but instead were standing still, the Moon would take less time to reach that same position. This is called the sidereal month , which is about 2.21 days shorter than the synodic month. “Sidereal” means “related to stars”—in this case, the Moon’s position relative to the stars.

What Is Percent Illumination?

Percent illumination , listed in the Moon Phase Calendar under the Moon symbol, tells us how much of the Moon’s disk is lit, as seen from Earth. Looking at the calendar on this page, you can see that from new to full, the percentage increases, indicating the waxing stages, and from full to new, the percentage decreases, indicating the waning stages. The New Moon is 0 percent illuminated (or totally dark); the First Quarter is essentially 50 percent illuminated (half of the disk is lit); the Full Moon is 100 percent illuminated (the entire disk is lit); and the Last Quarter is back to essentially 50 percent illuminated (half of the disk is lit).

We say “essentially” for the quarter phases because technically, at the exact time of the first quarter, a tiny fraction more than half of the Moon is lit, and in the last quarter, a tiny fraction less. The Moon is exactly half-lit when it reaches dichotomy , which occurs several minutes before the first quarter and several minutes after the last quarter.

When Does the Moon Rise and Set?

Below are general guidelines as to where to look for the Moon during each of its phases. Times mentioned are solar time, not clock time. The four primary phases (in italics) rise and set at a point in time; the four secondary phases occur over a broader timespan.

What Is Earthshine?

Earthshine is sunlight that dimly illuminates the dark part of the Moon’s surface that faces us. It occurs when light travels from the Sun to Earth, reflects off the Earth, travels to the Moon, and then bounces back to Earth to reach our eyes. When this happens, we can see part of the Moon that normally isn’t lit, but this portion is much dimmer than the section directly illuminated by sunlight.

For example, during a waxing crescent stage, we might see a thin crescent brightly lit by direct sunlight, but also the rest of the Moon’s disk slightly illuminated by a much dimmer glow from Earthshine. Sometimes, this appearance is called the “old Moon in the new Moon’s arms.”

Earthshine is most noticeable within five days of a new Moon (during the waning and waxing crescent stages).

Moon Phase: November 13, 2022

On this day the Moon was in a Waning Gibbous. During this phase the Moon can be seen in the early morning daylight hours on the western horizon. This is the first phase after the Full Moon occurs. It lasts roughly 7 days with the Moon’s illumination growing smaller each day until the Moon becomes a Last Quarter Moon with an illumination of 50%. The average Moon rise for this phase is between 9pm and Midnight depending on the age of the phase. The moon rises later and later each night setting after sunrise in the morning.

Putin offers truce if Ukraine exits Russian-claimed areas and drops NATO bid. Kyiv rejects it

moon tour 2022

Russian President Vladimir Putin promised Friday to “immediately” order a cease-fire in Ukraine and start negotiations if Kyiv began withdrawing troops from the four regions annexed by Moscow in 2022 and renounced plans to join NATO. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy rejected what he called an ultimatum by Putin to surrender more territory.

Putin's remarks came as Switzerland prepared to host scores of world leaders -- but not from Moscow -- this weekend to try to map out first steps toward peace in Ukraine.

They also coincided with a meeting of leaders of the Group of Seven leading industrialized nations in Italy and after the U.S. and Ukraine this week signed a 10-year security agreement that Russian officials, including Putin, denounced as "null and void."

Putin blasted the Switzerland conference as “just another ploy to divert everyone’s attention, reverse the cause and effect of the Ukrainian crisis (and) set the discussion on the wrong track.”

His demands came in a speech at the Russian Foreign Ministry and was aimed at what he called a “final resolution” of the conflict rather than “freezing it,” and stressed the Kremlin is “ready to start negotiations without delay.”

Broader demands for peace that Putin listed included Ukraine’s recognition of Crimea as part of Russia, keeping the country’s nonnuclear status, restricting its military force and protecting the interests of the Russian-speaking population. All of these should be part of “fundamental international agreements,” and all Western sanctions against Russia should be lifted, Putin said.

“We’re urging to turn this tragic page of history and to begin restoring, step-by-step, the unity between Russia and Ukraine and in Europe in general,” he said.

Putin’s remarks, made to a group of somber Foreign Ministry officials and some senior lawmakers, represented a rare occasion in which he clearly laid out his conditions for ending the war in Ukraine, but it didn’t include any new demands. The Kremlin has said before that Kyiv should recognize its territorial gains and drop its bid to join NATO.

Zelenskyy, in Italy for the G7 meeting, said Putin's proposal was not new and was in the form of an “ultimatum,” comparing it to actions by Adolf Hitler in seizing territory that led to World War II.

“What Putin demands is to give them a part of our territories, those occupied and not occupied, talking about several regions of our country,” he said.

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry called Putin’s plan “manipulative,” “absurd” and designed to “mislead the international community, undermine diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a just peace, and split the unity of the world majority around the goals and principles of the U.N. Charter.”

Besides seeking to join NATO, Ukraine wants Russian forces out of its territory, including the Crimean Peninsula that was illegally annexed in 2014; the restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity; and that Russia be held accountable for war crimes and for Moscow to pay reparations to Kyiv.

Russia launched its a full-scale invasion in February 2022. After Ukrainian forces thwarted a Russian drive to the capital, much of the fighting has focused in the south and east, where Moscow illegally annexed four regions, although it doesn’t fully control any of them.

Zelenskyy adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said on social media there was nothing new from Putin and that the Russian leader “voiced only the ‘standard aggressor’s set,’ which has been heard many times already.”

“There is no novelty in this, no real peace proposals and no desire to end the war. But there is a desire not to pay for this war and to continue it in new formats. It’s all a complete sham,” Podolyak wrote on X.

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said at NATO headquarters in Brussels that Putin “has illegally occupied sovereign Ukrainian territory. He is not in any position to dictate to Ukraine what they must do to bring about a peace.”

Austin added that Putin “started this war with no provocation. He could end it today if he chose to do that.”

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg added that “this is not a peace proposal. This is a proposal of more aggression, more occupation, and it demonstrates in a way that that Russia’s aim is to control Ukraine.”

Putin insisted that Kyiv should withdraw from all four annexed regions entirely and essentially cede them to Moscow within their administrative borders. In Zaporizhzhia in the southeast, Russia still doesn’t control the region’s administrative capital with a pre-war population of about 700,000; in the neighboring Kherson region, Moscow withdrew from its biggest city and capital of the same name in November 2022.

Putin said if “Kyiv and Western capitals” reject his offer, “it is their business, their political and moral responsibility for continuing the bloodshed.”

The Kremlin has repeatedly aired its readiness for peace talks with Kyiv and blamed the West for undermining its efforts to end the conflict.

Putin went further Friday and claimed his troops never intended to storm Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, even though they approached the city.

“In essence, it was nothing other than an operation to force the Ukrainian regime to peace. The troops were there to push the Ukrainian side to negotiate, to try and find an acceptable solution,” he said.

Moscow withdrew from Kyiv in March 2022 and described it a goodwill gesture as peace talks between the two began, but the pullback took place amid fierce Ukrainian resistance that significantly slowed down Russia’s battlefield advances.

Putin also claimed that in that same month, he told a foreign official he wasn’t ruling out withdrawing forces from the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions and ceding occupied parts of them back to Ukraine, as long as Kyiv allowed Russia to have a “strong land connection” to Crimea.

He said the official planned on bringing that proposal to Kyiv — which Moscow “welcomed,” as it generally welcomed “attempts to find a peaceful resolution of the conflict.” But the Kremlin then annexed both regions, along with the Donetsk and Luhansk provinces, citing the results of sham “referendums” it staged there. Putin mentioned those and said, “The matter is closed forever and is no longer up for discussion.”

In Friday's fighting, Russian defenses shot down 87 Ukrainian drones, the Defense Ministry in Moscow said, most of them launched against the Rostov region, home to Russia's southern military command, but no deaths or damage were reported in one of the biggest Ukrainian drone barrages of the war .

In Russia’s Belgorod region on the border, part of a residential building collapsed in the town of Shebekino after Ukrainian shelling, Belgorod Gov. Vyacheslav Gladkov said. Three people were injured, he said.

Ukraine’s military has been on the back foot in recent months, with its troops outnumbered by the Kremlin’s forces and running short of ammunition and weaponry due to delays in promised Western military aid.

Russia has battered Ukraine with drones, especially its power grid. It fired 14 missiles and 17 Shahed drones overnight, Ukraine’s air force said. Air defense systems downed all the drones as well as seven missiles, it said.

The attacks injured six people in the Donetsk region, where residential buildings were hit, officials said.

A Russian drone struck a bus near the village of Esman in the northern Sumy region, injuring three women. Authorities say 20 passengers were in the bus at the time.

Also Friday, Russia returned to Ukraine the bodies of 254 of its soldiers, Kyiv said. Once identified, the bodies will be returned to relatives, according to Ukraine's Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War —- Associated Press writers Jim Heintz in Tallinn, Samya Kullab and Illia Novikov in Kyiv, Ukraine, Lorne Cook in Brussels, and Barry Hatton in Lisbon, Portugal, contributed. ___ Follow AP's coverage of the war in Ukraine at https://apnews.com/hub/russia-ukraine
