Visit Yarra Valley: The Best Melbourne Day Trip for Wine Lovers (Including the Yarra Valley Wine Tour You Can’t Miss!)

Pouring wine in the Yarra Valley Australia with text overlay

Read on for how to plan an amazing day trip to Yarra Valley from Melbourne and the best Yarra Valley wine tour to book!

Melbourne is one of the most popular destinations in Australia , yet few people know that just one hour away by car is the picturesque Yarra Valley wine region, and even fewer actually plan a Yarra Valley day trip to go wine tasting! It’s shocking, really, seeing as it is one of the best wine regions in Australia.

Street art in Melbourne Australia

If you want to get off-the-beaten-track in Melbourne ( yes, there’s more to Melbourne than the street art and coffee ), then you absolutely need to go on a Yarra Valley winery tour to try the award winning Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Though the Yarra Valley wine region is best known for these two types of wine, there’s plenty of options including sparkling wine, dessert wine, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc.

The best way to travel to the Yarra Valley from Melbourne is by booking yourself into a small-group day tour – but the question is, which one? There are dozens and dozens of Yarra Valley wine tours, all at varying price points and with slightly different itineraries. After reading through hundreds of reviews, we decided to book the Yarra Valley Food & Wine Day Tour with Vinetrekker.

View from De Bortoli Winery in Yarra Valley Australia

Though the price was higher than some other companies, the company limits the number of people per group, you get semi-private tasting sessions at the Yarra Valley wineries, and the tour was consistently rated highly for the quality of food, service and professionalism. Read on for why you must visit the Yarra Valley and the best Yarra Valley wine tour that you won’t want to miss!

Where to stay in Melbourne

The Larwill Studio in Melbourne Australia

If it is your first time to Melbourne, you should aim to stay in the CBD or in Carlton, Parkville, Richmond, Southbank or South Yarra where you can reach the CBD easily via tram or train. We stayed at The Larwill Studio , a boutique hotel in Melbourne that is design-focused with modern amenities, a 24-hour gym and spacious rooms.

Skyline in Melbourne Australia

The hotel offers both twin or king bed configurations, and some rooms have a view over the park or the city. Just outside the hotel is the tram station where you can hop on a tram straight to the CBD and Flinders Street Station, and the airport is a AUD$35-40 Uber ride away. You can check out room availability and current prices at The Larwill Studio by clicking here , or take a look at some other highly rated accommodation options in Melbourne here instead.

Melbourne room rates tend to go up from early December to around February during the Australian summer, so make sure you book your room ahead of time!

Best time to visit the Yarra Valley

Yarra Valley in Australia

Melbourne and the Yarra Valley tend to be quite unpredictable in terms of weather, so you will want to bring warm clothes – even in the Australian summer months. The Yarra Valley tends to be a few degrees cooler than Melbourne, so bring a jacket and scarf.

The vineyards are beautiful during the summer (December to February), and never get too crowded, but you might want to head there on a Sunday or weekday to avoid the typical Saturday hen/bachelorette, birthday and holiday parties.

Looking for another fantastic day trip from Melbourne? Head to the Great Ocean Road to see jaw-dropping rock formations and coastal views!

Tips for Wine Tasting in Yarra Valley

Wine tasting at Medhurst Wines in Yarra Valley Australia

There are more than 150 wineries in the Yarra Valley, and it is fairly impossible to see all of them in one trip. Instead, I recommend booking yourself into a Yarra Valley wine tour from Melbourne so that an experienced guide can take you to a handful of the very best Yarra Valley wineries, as well as organize transportation to and from Melbourne so that you don’t have to worry about trying to find a designated driver.

If you do not join a tour in the Yarra Valley, you should know that most wineries charge for tastings (more often than not you can use this as credit towards a purchase), some places require advance bookings for group tastings, and it is an offence to drive in Australia while your blood alcohol concentration is 0.05 or above (but there are exceptions where a 0 blood alcohol concentration applies – for more details click here ).

Here are some additional tips if you are visiting the Yarra Valley:

  • Book a reputable Yarra Valley wine tasting tour – I recommend this Yarra Valley wine tour from Vinetrekker for their experience, excellent itineraries, knowledgeable guides and semi-private tastings. If you want to see some Australian wildlife, they also organize a winery + wildlife tour to visit 2 (instead of 5) wineries in the Yarra Valley as well as the Healesville Sanctuary, one of Australia’s most recognized and acclaimed wildlife sanctuaries showcasing koalas, kangaroos, wombats, emus, dingoes, birds of prey and platypus.
  • Book your Yarra Valley day tour early – The best Yarra Valley wine tours are usually booked solid during the peak season, and you might be stuck going on a cheaper tour that might feel more like a designated driver service rather than a proper winery tour. You won’t want to miss going on a Yarra valley day trip from Melbourne, so don’t leave it until the last minute to organize your tour.
  • Eat breakfast – Make sure you line your stomach properly before the wine tour. During our Yarra Valley wine tour we tasted approximately 40-45 different types of wines, with each winery pouring approximately 20-30 mL per tasting. Though you can spit or pour out some of the wine, that’s still a lot of wine!
  • Stay hydrated – Pace yourself and make sure you’re drinking enough H20, not just vino.
  • Take advantage of the bathrooms at each stop – Every single winery has bathroom facilities, so make sure you use them, especially before the drive back to Melbourne at the end of the day.
  • Avoid wearing white – Wearing anything white is just asking for it to get stained by red wine!
  • Ask questions – I’ll let you in on a secret: few people are actually wine experts. Even if you know very little about wine, take advantage of the wealth of knowledge around you and ask your tour guide and winery staff questions about the wine-making process, recommended food pairings, how to taste wine properly and so on.

Yarra Valley Food & Wine Day Tour Itinerary with Vinetrekker

Wine tasting at Medhurst Wines in Yarra Valley Australia

Vinetrekker runs some of the best Yarra Valley wine tours and their tour director, Paul, has an excellent rapport with the winery representatives. At many of the locations we were given semi-private tastings away from the other walk-in winery guests (it can get hectic inside smaller wineries with only a handful of staff trying to facilitate tastings for more than a dozen people), we were allowed to tour Chandon’s production facilities and got a behind-the-scenes look at the sparkling wine-making process, and even had a private lunch at Yering Station, one of the oldest and most reputable wineries in the Yarra Valley.

Here is the tour itinerary for the full-day Yarra Valley winery tour with Vinetrekker:

1. Meet the guide between 8:30 and 8:50 AM

You are picked up from your hotel in the CBD or you can meet the group and guide at St. Paul’s Cathedral on the corner of Swanston Street and Flinders Street. Our group was a mixed bag from all around the world – Germany, Finland, London, Sydney, Hong Kong and Napa Valley in California. Everyone was laid back and very friendly, which made the relaxed day even more enjoyable.

The distance from Melbourne to Yarra Valley is approximately 50 KM and will take an hour by car.

2. Wine tasting at Coldstream Hills

Wine tasting at Coldstream Hills winery in Yarra Valley Australia

And the tasting begins! We started the day at Coldstream Hills , which was established by James Halliday, one of the most well-respected wine commentators in Australia. Roland from Coldstream presented us with a sparkling wine followed by a few of their award-winning Chardonnays and Pinor Noirs; while I tend to avoid Chardonnay, the Chardonnay grown in the Yarra Valley region is slightly dryer than ones you might have tasted elsewhere, and may have even changed my mind on this variety!

Wine tasting at Coldstream Hills winery in Yarra Valley Australia 1

The stop here includes a tasting of 8-10 wines and an introduction into Coldstream’s sourcing and production methods.

3. Medhurst Vineyard tasting

Wine tasting at Medhurst Wines in Yarra Valley Australia

Next up, we headed to the family-owned Medhurst Wines vineyard which is elevated and offers a beautiful view from their cellar door. We tried their Sauvignon Blanc, 2016 Chardonnay, Rosé, Pinot Noir, a stunning Yarra Valley Burgundy (a mix of estate Pinor Noir and Shiraz), a 2015 Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon as well as the very sweet “Frances” Sauvignon Blanc (named after the owner’s daughter). Phew! See why it’s important to stay hydrated? Thankfully Medhurst also provided some delicious homemade hummus, feta dip and plenty of bread.

4. Domaine Chandon tour

Domaine Chandon winery in Yarra Valley Ausrtalia 2

Domaine Chandon is owned by the prestigious LVMH group and was founded in the 1980s when Moët & Chandon explored the world looking for wine-growing regions capable of producing exceptional sparkling wines.

Domaine Chandon winery in Yarra Valley Australia 4

I’m not normally a massive fan of Champagne/sparkling wine, but the Yarra Valley vineyard tour of the Domaine production facilities as well as the detailed explanation of the proper way to open sparkling wine bottles and their different characteristics was truly enjoyable. Did you know that you’re supposed to twist the bottle (not the cork) when you open a bottle of sparkling wine, and that 24 people die of champagne bottle-related injuries every year?

Domaine Chandon winery in Yarra Valley Australia 3

While you don’t get to taste the 4 varieties on offer at Domaine Chandon, you do get a full glass of Chandon’s sparkling wine to enjoy at their stunning property – it’s not hard to see why Domaine Chandon receives 250,000 visitors every year!

5. Yering Station vineyard lunch & tasting

Wine tasting at Yering Station in Yarra Valley Australia

Yering Station is one of the oldest wineries in the Yarra Valley, dating back to the early-mid 1800s. We were treated to a private tasting upstairs in the original winery (circa 1859) before a stunning lunch in the Wine Bar Restaurant.

Lunch at Yering Station in Yarra Valley Australia

They do not skimp on the portions here, and there are plenty of main course options including duck, Wagyu beef, fish or vegetarian. I was semi-expecting a few scones and finger sandwiches, and was more than pleasantly surprised when we sat down and saw the menu – lunch also includes a glass of wine and tea or coffee. I opted for the vegetarian gnocci and I can tell you that it’s one of the best pasta dishes I’ve ever had.

6. De Bortoli Winery wine & cheese tasting

Cheese tasting at De Bortoli Winery in Yarra Valley Australia

Our final stop for the day was the Italian De Bortoli Winery where the De Bortoli family has been making wine for 90 years. We paired delicious premium Chardonnay, Riesling, Cuvée Blanc, Pinot Noir, dessert wine and 21-year old tawny port wine with a selection of decadent cheeses. Who knew that dessert wine could work so well with stinky blue cheese?

The cheese and wine was the perfect end to a perfect day of wine, views for days and fantastic company. We made our way back to Melbourne with full bellies, and many of us (myself included) had to find space in our suitcases for a few bottles of wine to take back home!

Travel stories from a fellow travel lover, yarra valley day trip itinerary from melbourne for all seasons.

Yarra Valley Day Trip Itinerary from Melbourne for All Seasons

Just slightly over an hour away from Melbourne’s bustling city center is the picturesque Yarra Valley. With stunning views of its surrounding mountains, Yarra River, and many well-known wineries in the area, it is no wonder that Yarra Valley is in most traveler’s Melbourne itinerary.

However, I was (pleasantly) surprised to discover that there is more to the valley than just wineries. Not only did we manage to enjoy the high-quality wine from the region, we also visited other interesting places there. Here’s our Yarra Valley Day trip itinerary from Melbourne.

9.30am – 12.00pm: Rayner’s Orchard

day trip to winery melbourne

Start your morning in Yarra valley at Rayner’s Orchard, where various fresh and delicious fruit awaits you all year round. Once you arrive, head to the Peach Cafe and purchase tickets for the Fruit Adventure Tour which will take you on a guided tour around their beautiful orchard. Learn more about the farm’s history, farming techniques and interact directly with the founding family on this tour. If you are visiting with a large group, you may want to book your tour tickets in advance by contacting them here .

blog_DSC_0407

Tickets for the tour cost 29.50 AUD but this includes fruit sampling of up to 8 fruits. You also have the choice of picking and bringing home the fruits that you enjoyed eating the most for only 5 AUD per kg! Regardless of the season, there is always something growing in Rayner’s Orchard. Don’t believe me? Check out their list here .

yarra valley in spring

If you are visiting from August to mid-September, you’re in luck as some of the fruit trees blossom during this period. It made me feel like I was in Korea or Japan during cherry blossom season.

Before heading off to the next destination, remember to have your fill of freshly cooked farm delicacies at the Peach Cafe. Check out the menu and price list here .

Read a detailed review of my experience at Rayner’s Orchard here .

12.30pm – 1.30pm: Lubra Bend

day trip to winery melbourne

Next stop is Lubra Bend, a carefully designed garden overseeing the beautiful Yarra River. The garden is located on a private compound and guests who wish to witness the magnificence of the estate needs to inform the management in advance. Once your booking is approved, you will be informed of the cost of your visit which will usually include afternoon tea.

Yarra Valley Day Trip Itinerary from Melbourne for All Seasons

The garden features a wide variety of native Australian plants with several unique structures made by local designers. Regardless of the season, there is always something blooming in Lubra Bend. When we visited in early August, we witnessed the beauty of various camellia flowers.

1.35pm – 2.30pm: Yarra Valley Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery

blog_DSC_0796

This stop will be every sweet tooths’ dream come true! Yarra Valley Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery is the place to go if you want to indulge in endless chocolate – yes, free chocolate tasting is available! If you’re looking to buy a non-alcoholic gift for your friends from the valley, there are many options here. From the normal chocolate bars to the seemingly-weird chocolate lip balm, I’m sure you will find something.

blog_DSC_0814

Remember to also have a small break at their cafe. The selection of ice cream flavors was not out-of-this-world but they also had other chocolate cakes if you need more chocolate. More importantly, you should not miss out on the stunning view of the surrounding area from the outdoor seating at the cafe.

2.40pm – 4.00pm: Domaine Chandon

blog_DSC_0875

Domaine Chandon is one of the more well-known wineries in the region and should definitely be added to your Yarra Valley itinerary. Wine tasting is offered here at an affordable price of 12 AUD for 6 different wines and 6 AUD will be refunded if you purchase a bottle of wine at their store.

Other than wine tasting, visitors may also embark on a self-guided tour of the facility to learn more about wine-making.

4.05pm – 5.00pm: Yarra Valley Dairy

day trip to winery melbourne

For the last stop, we chose to visit Yarra Valley Dairy. Here visitors are able to buy and try many types of locally produced cheese. To try, simply ask one of the friendly staff at the counter and they will prepare up to 6 kinds of cheese for you.

blog_DSC_0861

There is also a mini wine corner, gift shop and cafe if you are feeling hungry.

If you do not fancy cheese or milk products, you may choose to visit other wineries in the are like Yering Station instead. However please note that most places in this area closes at 5pm or earlier so make sure you plan your time wisely.

Hope you have an enjoyable time at Yarra Valley!

About the Yarra Valley wine region

The Yarra Valley is Australia’s oldest and most respected wine region. Vines were first planted in the valley in 1838 by the Scottish Ryrie brothers, who established Yering Station, which is still operational today. The valley’s cool climate and fertile soils proved to be well-suited to grape growing, and by the late 19th century, the Yarra Valley was producing some of the finest wines in Australia.

The early 20th century saw a decline in the Yarra Valley’s wine industry due in part to the phylloxera epidemic that devastated vineyards around the world. However, the industry began to recover in the 1960s, and by the 1980s, the Yarra Valley was once again producing world-class wines.

Today, the Yarra Valley is home to over 60 wineries, producing a wide range of premium wines, including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Shiraz. The valley is also a popular tourist destination, with many wineries offering tours and tastings.

Wine Tours in the Yarra Valley with Melbourne Valley Wine Tours

There are many different wine tours available in the Yarra Valley, ranging from half-day tours to full-day tours. Some tours focus on a particular wine style, such as Chardonnay or Pinot Noir, while others offer a more general overview of the valley’s wines. Most tours include visits to 3 or 4 wineries, where you will have the opportunity to taste wines and learn about the winemaking process.

Trips from Melbourne

Many wine tours depart from Melbourne, making it easy to visit the Yarra Valley for a day. The drive from Melbourne to the Yarra Valley is about an hour on our 15 or 25-seater tour bus.

Top Labor Day Travel Trends of 2024

Aaa booking data shows alaska cruises, european cities, and tourist attractions are most popular.

day trip to winery melbourne

WASHINGTON, DC (Aug. 19, 2024) – This year’s record-breaking , blockbuster summer travel season comes to a close with many Americans exploring Alaska by cruise. According to AAA booking data, Seattle is the number one Labor Day weekend* destination, up nearly 30% from last year when it also topped the list. Anchorage and Juneau are also on the top ten list of Labor Day destinations.

“This is the time of year to go on an Alaska cruise,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “There are fewer crowds compared to earlier in the summer, and if you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of fall colors! It’s no surprise Alaska cruises are sold out this Labor Day weekend.”

AAA travel experts say if you’re interested in going on an Alaska cruise next summer, the time to book is now to lock in the best rate and ensure you get the type of cabin you want.

According to AAA booking data, o verall domestic travel over Labor Day weekend is up 9% compared to last year , while the cost to travel domestically is down 2%. Other top Labor Day destinations include Orlando, New York, Boston, Las Vegas, Denver, Chicago, and San Francisco. For many families, Labor Day is the last hurrah before school begins. To make the most of those trips, AAA recommends identifying must-see sights and creating a flexible itinerary ahead of time. “ Trip Canvas is a great free resource for travelers in the planning phase,” Twidale said. “You can find free things to do in Denver or the best museums in New York City .”

Travelers taking road trips should expect to pay less for gas compared to last year. The national average over Labor Day weekend in 2023 was $3.81. In recent weeks, gas prices have remained steady, hovering around $3.50. Despite the popularity of summer road trips, overall gas demand is down as daily driving habits have changed post-pandemic, preventing pump prices from spiking. Hurricanes hitting the Gulf and affecting regional refineries could cause gas prices to go up as the peak of the season approaches in September. For drivers taking road trips in their electric vehicles, AAA now offers information on the cost of Level 2 commercial EV charging and updates that data weekly .

International travel over Labor Day weekend is down 4% compared to last year, per AAA booking numbers , while the cost to travel internationally is up 11%. Most of those travelers are heading to Europe. Eight out of the top ten international destinations booked through AAA are European cities. Travelers renting a car abroad should consider getting an International Driving Permit (IDP), which translates their driver’s license information into 10 languages. Some countries – including Italy and Spain – require it. AAA is the only entity in the U.S. authorized by the State Department to issue an IDP.

Best and Worst Times to Travel by Car over Labor Day Weekend

INRIX , a provider of transportation data and insights, says car travelers should avoid the afternoon and early evening hours of Thursday and Friday, as those times will be the most congested. Drivers should hit the road in the morning unless they’re leaving on Saturday when the best time to travel by car is in the afternoon. Travelers returning on Sunday and on Labor Day should leave as early as possible to avoid heavy traffic in the afternoon.

“Drivers should expect the most severe traffic jams before the holiday weekend as commuters mix with travelers,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX. “Monitoring traffic apps, local news stations, and 511 traveler information services may help drivers navigate around congestion and reduce driver frustration this Labor Day.”

AAA looked at booking data for Thursday, August 29 through Monday, September 2, and compared those numbers with booking data for that same five-day period in 2023.
