Seriously! I once embarked on a cross-country road trip with one of these toilets and one of our crew members had to use it several times right on the side of the road.

While we had a portable Pop-Up-Pod to provide a certain degree of privacy, we could absolutely set our portable toilet up within seconds when needed. 

Be Environmentally-Friendly

If you like to camp in remote places, odds are you’re accustomed to digging cat holes and burying your excrement.

While this is the preferred method of waste disposal for backcountry camping, it does have a negative impact on the environment if a lot of people are doing the same thing in a relatively small area.

Types of Camping Toilets

If you’re new to the world of camping toilets that you can bring anywhere, you need to know that there are several different types you can choose from.

As you might imagine, those types have their pros and cons. So we’re going to define each type and highlight some of their advantages and disadvantages. 

Bucket Toilets

This style of portable toilet really isn’t much more than what it sounds like.

Some of them don’t resemble much more than a five-gallon bucket with a toilet seat on top and a lid to keep the scent contained. Others have a more fancy exterior but function in a similar fashion. 

This type of portable toilet tends to be reasonably affordable and very easy to use.

Some of them, however, don’t hold scents in all that well and they will require a more extensive cleaning process when it’s time to empty them. 

Folding Toilets

This is the lightest and most compact type of portable toilet for camping. They usually resembled a toilet seat with folding legs that can be unfolded and locked into place when it’s time to do your business. 

This type of camping toilet relies on bags that catch your excrement and make disposing of it relatively simply.

In all honesty, you’ll wind up with your own excrement in a bag that’s not too different from the plastic bags that many of us use to dispose of our dog’s excrement. 

The good part about these toilets is that they are relatively inexpensive and require the least amount of storage space of any of the portable camping toilets.

But they don’t necessarily make disposing of your excrement super enjoyable and they will require that you spend a lot of money on plastic bags, which isn’t the most environmentally-friendly way to go. 

Porta Potti Toilets

This is my personal favorite type of camping toilet. While most of them are slightly more expensive than folding or bucket-style toilets, they have a dedicated (and sealed) storage container for your human waste at the bottom part of the toilet. 

This style of toilet has two parts. The upper part features the toilet seat and the lid. The lower part is essentially a container that seals off when you’re not using it.

The two parts can be separated and there’s usually a disposal spout that makes it easy to empty the container without getting your hands anywhere near the waste inside. 

Some of the fancier Porta Potti camping toilet models can even hook up to the water supply in your camping trailer to make it easier to flush things clean after you do your business.

And these camping toilets also offer a reasonably large capacity that allows you to go several days before you have to find a place to empty them in a sanitary fashion. 

Composting Toilets

This is the most expensive type of portable toilet for camping. But if you’re interested in humanure , none of the other types of portable camping toilets will suffice.

Composting toilets don’t require any water and, instead, they utilize natural processes to break down human waste so that it’s safe to add back to the natural environment. 

However, there is quite a lot to consider if you want to add human waste back into the natural environment safely.

That’s because most of us are eating diets that include a lot of artificial ingredients and preservatives that aren’t necessarily safe and healthy to put back into our soil if we want our soil to be healthy. 

That is why portable composting toilets are usually best for RVs, travel trailers, or 5th wheels that are more permanently parked in a location that’s dedicated to organic farming and sustainable living practices. 

That being said, this style of portable camping toilet is certainly an option for traveling campers or location-independent nomads as well.

You’ll just need to be well aware of your diet and you may need to travel longer distances to find places that are willing to accept your waste when it’s time to empty your portable composting camping toilet. 

How To Use a Portable Camping Toilet

The good news is you don’t need to learn a whole new bathroom routine in order to use these portable camping toilets.

For example, it’s not like learning how to use a bidet on your first visit to Europe if you’ve grown up in the U.S. without this style of toilet. 

That being said, there are a few important rules for using a portable camping toilet.

First, you don’t dispose of any paper materials in this style of camping toilet. While some might say that you can put your toilet paper into them, we don’t recommend it. 

It’s just going to increase your risk of having to deal with a clog or rough clean-out.

So just dispose of your paper waste in a trash can or plastic waste bag instead of putting it into your camping toilet.

Just to be clear, nothing but the liquid or solid waste that comes directly out of your body should go into your portable camping toilet.

But if you have a folding toilet that relies on bags for waste disposal, there’s no reason you can’t throw your toilet paper into the bag along with your human waste. 

For any other type of camping toilet, it’s probably best that you get some sort of small waste basket to go alongside your camping toilet.

Of course, you can always use plastic bags for your paper waste, but we advocate reducing plastic waste as much as possible.

How To Dump a Portable Camping Toilet

Once you’ve used your portable camping toilet, we know it’s going to feel a little weird getting rid of your human waste.

Not to worry. Let’s talk about disposal methods for safely getting rid of the human waste you’ve accumulated in your portable toilet for camping. 

For bucket-style camping toilets, the typical disposal method is to put a large plastic waste bag inside the bucket.

This bag secures around the top edges of the bucket when you snap or set the lid in place. When the bag is full, you remove it, tie it up, and dispose of it in a waste basket or dumpster. 

Most bucket toilets come with a pre-packaged waste kit that includes bags and some sort of chemical solution that you can add after each use to neutralize odors.

However, they don’t tend to seal as thoroughly and completely as Porta Potti toilets. 

And while you could simply get in the habit of disposing of your plastic waste bag after each use, you’ll wind up generating a ton of single-use plastics that way.

That being said, the big advantage of this style of toilet is that you don’t have to worry about making a mess when you try to pour your waste out of the holding tank and into the hole at a dump station or city waste management facility. 

Still, it’s a good idea to find a freshwater source every now and then to thoroughly rinse out the inside of the bucket and clean off the toilet seat.

You can use a mild detergent or bleach solution to help you kill any leftover bacteria on your bucket toilet seat. 

This style of portable camping toilet is the easiest to dump. The toilets themselves require you to collect your human waste in a plastic bag.

So the best way to dispose of that waste is to add it to the nearest trash can you can find. 

Please, don’t put any plastic materials into the hole at an RV dump station or municipal wastewater treatment facility! 

Porta potti toilets are some of the easiest and safest to dispose of. Many of these camping toilets have a disposal nozzle that opens and allows you to pour the contents of the container directly into the hole at an RV dump station or your city’s closest wastewater treatment facility.

Some regional facilities and RV parks will charge a fee for using their disposal services, and others will allow you to dump there for free.

That being said, the enclosed nature of this style of portable toilet can make them a bit more difficult to clean out after dumping the majority of their contents.

You may need to run a hose through them while propping them up so that their nozzle is emptying into the dump station’s waste inlet. 

In most cases, this shouldn’t be too difficult. Most RV parks and wastewater treatment facilities provide a freshwater hose to assist with clean-out duties.

But if there’s no clean-out hose present, you may need to use your own supply of freshwater to clean out your portable Porta Potti-style camping toilet. 

Composting toilets are arguably the hardest to dump out of all the different types of portable toilets for camping.

Because they don’t rely on water, the human waste they catch is beginning to biodegrade while it’s still contained in the toilet’s catchment area. 

This means that you can’t just pull up to an RV dump station or municipal wastewater treatment facility and dump the contents of your camping toilet into their holding tanks.

You’ll need to do a little more research to find sustainable farms or industrial composting facilities that are willing to accept your slightly-degraded human waste. 

Most composting toilets also must be vented to allow gasses and odors to escape as a natural part of the decomposition process.

That’s why many of them are permanently installed in tiny homes or RV conversions with a vent out the roof or side of the structure. 

Air flow also helps the natural moisture evaporation process that is necessary to the composting process.

That’s why many of these portable toilets come with small fans that stimulate air flow and help the liquid collected in the toilet’s holding tank evaporate. 

All of these additional features mean that composting toilets are the most expensive type of portable camping toilet on the market.

But they are also the only type of camping latrine that will allow you to safely convert human waste into fertilizer for your garden or the gardens of farmers you visit on your road trip travels.

The first thing you should consider when shopping for a camping toilet is the overall size of the unit.

If you plan on using it inside a camping trailer or popup truck camper, you’ll need to make sure you have enough space to set it up properly and use it functionally once it’s set up. 

Fortunately, the dimensions of most of these toilets are easy to find on Amazon or directly on the manufacturer’s website.

And you should also keep in mind that size may not matter as much if you know you’ll always be setting up your portable toilet outside with some sort of popup shelter or privacy shade. 

The next specification to note is the total capacity of the toilet’s holding tank.

Depending on the style of toilet you choose, you may be disposing of your waste in single-use plastic bags or you may have a large tank that will hold waste from up to 50 uses before you need to empty it. 

Among the toilets we’ve chosen to review above, the largest capacity you’ll find is five gallons.

As you might imagine, a toilet with a higher holding tank capacity will require you to empty and clean it less frequently.

Plus, they can also accommodate the larger bowel movements that some of us experience when we eat the kinds of camping foods that our bodies aren’t necessarily used to. 

In addition, you should look at the design of the toilet’s flushing mechanism if you choose a model that’s equipped with one.

Some units boast unidirectional flush mechanisms and others have multi-directional units. 

From our experience, a multi-directional flushing unit is always more effective at removing as much waste as possible from the toilet bowl.

This also makes your toilet more hygienic (especially if multiple people are using it) and easier to clean when it’s time to do so. 

And, finally, you should also look for a toilet design that has taken odor reduction into account.

Some of the best toilets for camping include some sort of chemical or organic solution that helps to minimize the odors that the toilet emits when it’s holding waste. 

Some models will come with waste kits that include a solution that will need to be added to the toilet after each use.

Others come with containment modules that are lined with a chemical solution for stench prevention.

And for people with vulvas, female urination devices—colloquially (and more inclusively) called pee funnels—have been a game changer. I consider myself an expert on all things “down there” (I even wrote the first and only health book to feature dozens of un-airbrushed vulvas ). But until the pandemic, I’d never before tried to pee while standing, with the help of a funnel.

To figure out the best tools to help me overcome my urinary anatomical limitations, I spent a lot of time in my bathroom and backyard peeing on and into 18 different disposable and reusable funnels. A pee funnel essentially acts as a urethral proxy for a penis, directing urine away from your body—and clothing. Peeing through one is very much like using a funnel to pour gasoline from a can into a car, except that the gas can is a bladder full of urine, and the car is anywhere that’s not your legs and shoes.

Peeing while standing is delightfully freeing. (Oh, how this would have saved my sanity in the third trimester of pregnancy.) It can also feel safer than the more-vulnerable squatting position: Pee funnels can make it possible to pee standing up at a urinal or to remain more aware of your environment while peeing outside. Now that I’ve been inducted into the “free to pee” movement, I can’t imagine going anywhere without a pee funnel.

After a lot of trial and error (including two utter disasters), I recommend the Tinkle Belle for most people who want a reusable pee funnel. It has a stable, rigid base and a flexible spout, both of which make it sturdy and impossible to collapse during use (a nightmare I experienced while using a lesser funnel in my shower—which is, by the way, the perfect place to practice). The Tinkle Belle is also among the longest and widest of all the available one-piece reusable pee funnels, and that makes it easier and less messy to use than the competition. The more coverage a pee funnel affords, the lower the leakage risk. And the longer the spout, the farther it shoots your pee away from you.

In terms of cleaning the funnel, a simple rinse works when you’re on the go. And it’s easy to clean with soap and water once you’re back home (the manufacturer even says the Tinkle Belle is dishwasher-safe). Although it’s larger than most funnels, the Tinkle Belle folds up for more-compact storage. For about another $8, you can get one with a matching case —though I prefer to carry mine in a plastic baggie, along with a pack of tissues and some hand sanitizer.

If the Tinkle Belle is sold out, the perfunctory but popular Freshette also works well. This rigid funnel has a more traditional, conical base. And it comes with a separate extension tube, which makes the Freshette slightly more of a hassle to stow and keep clean. But it’s the same length as and slightly wider than the less expensive Tinkle Belle.

I also peed in a multipurpose funnel (the one I used cost me 97¢  when I purchased it in the automotive section of a big-box store, but they’re generally more expensive online). In my experience, it worked as well as the Tinkle Belle and the Freshette, though it’s not nearly as portable.

If you prefer to pee and discard, the water-resistant paperboard PeeBuddy is by far the best of the four single-use pee funnels I tried. It folds flat and can be stored anywhere from in a notepad or a pocket to up a pair of Spanx. When it’s time to pee, the PeeBuddy easily pops into a funnel that’s as long and wide as the Tinkle Belle, though it’s far less sturdy. If you’re not careful to set it up just so, the PeeBuddy can collapse, potentially causing a mess. At around 60¢ per funnel when purchased in a multipack, it’s affordable enough that you can use a new one every time you need to pee outside of your home.

TravelJohn Disposable Urinal (TJ1A)

Anyone with or without a penis can use these simple disposable pouches to catch and contain pee.

Unlike the Tinkle Belle, which just redirects pee, the TravelJohn is a urine-collection device that has a rigid, vulva-friendly opening. We found that it’s a relatively inexpensive and hygienic way to safely pee anywhere: in a car, at the park, at the drive-in movie theater . Each single-use pouch currently costs around $2.40. You pee into the opening, wait a few seconds for the expelled urine to turn into a leak-resistant gel, and then simply toss the whole thing in the trash when possible.

The company’s TravelJane , which is typically more expensive, is the exact same pouch, but in pink. The TravelJohn Jr. has the same size opening as the TravelJohn, but the pouch has less capacity. We wouldn’t risk overfilling it—get the TravelJohn. (To avoid confusion and spills, have your kids practice at home in the shower or outside before springing this on them when they need to go while on the go.)

When I compared the similar Peebol by SheWee with the TravelJohn, I preferred peeing into the Peebol, because it has a larger capacity and zips closed. (At the time of initial publication, it was sold out everywhere. It’s now available in multipacks.)

Reliance Luggable Loo Portable Toilet

Surprisingly comfortable to use, this bucket with a toilet seat attached is a relatively affordable upgrade compared with a bucket that has no toilet seat.

If you need to sit to pee, or you want to have a place to poop, Reliance’s Luggable Loo is a worthwhile step up from “any old bucket.” This 5-gallon vessel has a surprisingly comfortable toilet seat and, importantly, a secure lid. You can line it with conventional garbage bags or, if you’re feeling fancy, get the brand’s Double Doodie deodorizing liners . Wildly popular with campers and road-trippers, the Luggable Loo is often sold out. But you can BYOFGB (bring your own 5-gallon bucket) and buy just the potty lid , which is generally more available but costs almost as much as the whole shebang.

To use the Luggable Loo, you need to be able to squat down onto a bucket that sits 15 inches off the ground. If you’re on the taller side or otherwise could use a higher—and therefore more comfortable—portable toilet seat, the Green Elephant Folding Commode is a great choice. At almost triple the price of the Luggable Loo, it looks nicer and takes up less storage space (it can even fit into large suitcases), but there’s also more room for user error. Although the Green Elephant’s height makes it easier to sit down on, compared with using a bucket, this folding seat requires more setup and takedown. And it’s much easier to topple over or for a bag to come loose due to wind, clumsiness, or both.

DIY (and free) options

Free or low-cost pee funnel and collection options include a rolled-up paper plate (doable with practice) or any old wide-mouthed bottle (doable with substantial practice). You can also make your own pee funnel out of a plastic soda bottle (video) , and legend has it that some impressive souls with vulvas have figured out how to use finger pressure to pee upright , no apparatus needed.

No matter what you choose to use, be sure to be considerate of others (and local rules) when deciding where you eliminate. Also, pack hand sanitizer to hold you over until you can wash with soap and water. And, as any experienced on-the-go urinator will tell you, stand uphill of your splash spot, and never, ever pee into the wind.

Buying guide for best travel toilets.

When nature calls, you can't just send that message to voicemail — you must answer. For some adventurous individuals, the call can come at some pretty inconvenient times. In those instances, you either need to be extremely resourceful or have a Plan B. A travel toilet is an excellent option that can provide relief no matter where you happen to be.

The best travel toilets are sturdy, comfortable, and able to meet the individual's needs. If a flushing model is what you desire, it should be effective and easy to operate, and it should seal securely to minimize odors. A tank level indicator is essential, so you know when it's time to empty the waste tank.

Key considerations

There are non-flushing and flushing travel toilets. Here’s a look at each type.

Non-flushing

A non-flushing travel toilet is the most basic type of travel toilet. It is a step better than digging a hole. A non-flushing travel toilet may be as simple as a plastic toilet seat that fits on top of a 5-gallon bucket and is designed for use in emergencies. Typically, though, a non-flushing travel toilet includes both a seat and a bucket. Inside the bucket, there may be a smaller bucket that can be removed for cleaning or a plastic bag liner, like a trash can has, that can be quickly removed and disposed of. Alternatively, some models forgo the bucket and just feature a bag that attaches to the seat.

While quick, convenient, lightweight, and affordable, these toilets do not offer the best protection against odor and should be emptied and cleaned after every use.

A flushing travel toilet is much closer to what you are used to using at home . These models feature two sections: a bowl and a waste tank. After using a flushable travel toilet, you press a button or step on a foot pedal, and the bowl is rinsed by pressurized water, chemicals, or a combination of the two. The waste then moves into the storage tank, which may be all natural for composting or equipped with chemicals that help combat odor, germs, and waste. In the case of the latter, the slurry can later be poured out and the waste tank rinsed clean.

Flushing models tend to feature greater comfort and support, plus they have a seat with a lid. The best part is the waste is stored in a separate sealed container to help reduce unpleasant odors. A flushable travel toilet can be used several times before it needs to be emptied.

The size of the waste tank is what we are talking about here. The larger it is, the less often you will have to empty it. On the downside, if you get a model with a 5-gallon capacity, you will need to be able to lift it so it can be dumped and cleaned. The best model for most individuals offers a compromise — not too small but not too big.

Overall size

The overall size includes everything from the size of the seat to the height and weight of the toilet. The most portable models fold flat and can be easily carried along with camping gear . Larger toilets require a vehicle for transport. Choose the model that is sized for your situation.

Odor-fighting capabilities

Anything that helps fight odor will be welcome, from an airtight seal to deodorizing chemicals. If your travel toilet has a pungent odor, you will not want it anywhere near your campsite. This situation becomes increasingly problematic in a confined space such as a small boat .

Tank level indicator

Unless you'd like to take a peek, you need a tank level indicator to let you know when it is time to empty the travel toilet's waste tank.

Ease of cleaning

Look for a model that offers ease of cleaning. Any feature that is designed to reduce splashing while dumping will be greatly appreciated.

Carrying a bucket around can be awkward. If the model you are considering has a built-in handle, you will be grateful.

If you are roughing it in the woods, you might think, "Who cares what my travel toilet looks like?" However, when engaged in an activity as personal as this, comfort is key, and any aspect that makes you feel even a little more at ease will help. The look and feel of your travel toilet could make the difference between success and suffering for the entire duration of your outing due to performance anxieties.

Toilet paper holder

Some models feature a built-in toilet paper holder. This may sound like a small thing, but you may not want to be placing the toilet paper on the ground next to the unit.

Some travel toilets are specifically designed for emergency situations and come with additional liners, gloves , cleaning supplies, toilet paper, chemicals, and more. If you like the convenience of getting everything you need in an all-in-one kit, this option is for you.

Travel toilet prices

Inexpensive : If a bucket lid, a bucket, or a disposable bag model would suffice, you can usually find a very basic one for less than $10. However, there are better models with more comfortable seats that are still relatively inexpensive for $40 to $100. These are not perfect appliances, but if you find yourself in an emergency situation, it’s better than nothing.

Mid-range : From roughly $100 to $200 are travel toilets that flush and contain a bowl attached to a waste tank. These are best for light-duty use, as they tend to have smaller tanks that hold only 2 to 3 gallons.

Expensive : From $200 to $400, you can find larger travel toilets that may have waste tanks as large as 5 gallons along with large freshwater tanks for flushing. Additionally, these models will have a more comfortable design, and the flushing will be more effective.

The most essential but also the least enjoyable aspect of owning a travel toilet is the cleaning. Following are tips to help keep your travel toilet clean and sanitized.

• Read and follow all instructions for your particular model. Some travel toilets may be slightly different from others, requiring a modified cleaning procedure. Don't just wing it.
• Empty in a timely manner. Once the waste level indicator shows "full," it's time to empty the travel toilet. Delaying the task could cause an unpleasant overfill situation.
• Protect yourself from germs. Before setting up or cleaning your travel toilet, put on a pair of elbow-length cleaning gloves.
• Be mindful of spillage. Before you separate the tank from the bowl, be absolutely certain the valve is closed so there is no chance for spillage. If your travel toilet features an air relief valve, be sure to use it to help limit splashing while emptying the tank.
• After dumping, add fresh water to the waste tank. Close and shake it to clean out the inside. You may need to do this several times.
• Choose cleaning and deodorizing products that are safe and recommended by the manufacturer. Otherwise, you might damage the plastic parts and rubber seals of your travel toilet.
• Do not use or store your travel toilet near food.

Q. Who might benefit from a travel toilet? A. The obvious answer is anyone who likes to go camping . However, a travel toilet also comes in handy in other scenarios. Hunters, people who travel by van, and people who enjoy boating may all require a toilet while engaged in their activities. A travel toilet could be used on a construction site or by long-haul truckers. Additionally, a travel toilet can be used to potty train a child or serve as a backup toilet if there is ever an emergency situation in your home. Even individuals who simply have an aversion to public restrooms may find a travel toilet a more desirable option.  

Q. What about privacy? A. Travel toilets do not tend to come with privacy screens, so it would be up to the individual to procure such an item. Since the toilet is portable, the easiest solution is to place it somewhere with natural privacy. If that is not an option, you could string up some sheets to mark off a more private space. If you desire a separate restroom, consider getting a privacy tent, also known as a shower tent . It’s almost as good as having your own personal bathroom stall in the middle of the wilderness. Q. Where should I dispose of the waste from a travel toilet? A. The answer to this question depends on where you are and what kind of travel toilet you have. If you have a model with chemicals, these need to be emptied at a designated site. If you are at a campsite , emptying stations will likely be a short distance from the main area in a discreet location that has running water. If you are deep in the wilderness and have a bucket or a model that doesn't use chemicals, you will have to choose a location that is at least 100 feet away from trails, camps, and water sources so you can dig a hole that is at least 6 inches deep to bury the waste.

Here you have the best portable toilets for camping that are currently available on the market, from the three major groups, waterless, flushable, and composting. All of them are reliable tools that have been on the market for several years already.

What types of camping portable toilets exist

Typically, you will see the following main types:

• Waterless portable camping toilets . Here you have removable waste bags, and this type is usually the most affordable and simple to use.
• Portable flushing toilets . The meaning should be obvious, you have water flushing systems here, more in the text below. These are a bit more expensive types.
• Composting portable toilets . This type uses no water or uses very little. The waste is mixed with some materials, like sawdust, and after that, it is disposed to turn into a fertilizer. These items are quite expensive.

You will realize that the toilets presented here are well-engineered and reliable. Practically all of them have been on the market for a number of years already, so they have been tested by thousands of users. You realize this when you see how many customers’ reports are available on the Internet.

Here, I do not discuss various chemicals that you might use to avoid odors, but those are widely available and some are mentioned in the videos below together with the toilets. If you still experience odors, then check the valve system which you have in the toilet, and also make sure that there are no objects blocking the seals from closing completely.

Waterless   toilets   for   camping

I guess the meaning of the terminology should be self-evident, these are the simplest tools, some even nicely packable and can be carried in a suitcase. But why would you carry them this way? Well, there are countries where the toilets are just holes, so if you are not used to this, it can be very unpleasant experience with pain in your knees.

Even in Japan, you can have super modern toilets with heated seats and water splash system to wash your bottom and then a fan that will make it dry; but next to it you can have an old-fashioned toilet with just a hole in the floor. This is the matter of tradition, and I have seen this in a brand new institute of physics which I have visited many times in the past. It was just built when I first visited it, and it still had both types described above. But in some other countries you can have only holes, so having a portable and collapsible toilet may be a wise way to go.

1. Reliance Luggable Loo Portable Toilet

This is a very affordable, simple yet reliable portable toilet that will not break the bank. This bucket type toilet has a wide base and it is rather stable. As you realize, it will not sink into the ground. You have 5-gallon volume here, a hinged molded seat, and snap-on cover. I see it as a great tool for any outdoor activity with a car access, like family camping, fishing, hunting. To keep it clean, you will use any disposable plastic bags.

This is a nice piece to have even at campgrounds which already have installed bathrooms, to avoid walking long distances, especially at night.

The lid seals the bucket, and the whole structure looks like a normal bucket when you close the lid, all is self-contained and the waste is invisible from outside.

Note that the seat is the same height as the Green Elephant model below, and it is higher than the Stansport toilet. I guess standards are different in different countries, but its height is the same what I have at home in the EU.

The users’ weight limit in the specifications is 200 lb (91 kg) so this may be an issue with heavier people, bear this in mind. This limit is well below those you have in the Stansport and the Green Elephant toilet.

The current price is $38. As for the basic data, the weight is 2.98 lb (1.35 kg) and the weight capacity is 200 lb (91 kg). The dimensions (L x W x H) are 13 x 13 x 15.56 inches (33 x 33 x 40 cm)..

2. Green Elephant Folding Commode Comfort Chair

This is a folding tool, the most practical and the simplest you will find. If you have very limited space in the car (or even in your travel suitcase), this is the tool to consider.

You have a reinforced steel frame , which folds for transportation and packing.  The seat is the size and shape of a standard toilet seat.

The principle of use is obvious from the picture. It will work with any plastic bag of the appropriate size (8 gallons). Note that the bag is kept in place by the double-layered seat.

This steel structure supports up to 250 pounds (113 kg). The seat is a hard and dense plastic. This tool is perfect for hiking, hunting, safari, boating, construction sites, etc.

One issue I notice here (except for the steep price) is the lack of the lid. This means you have to throw away the bag after every use. But I guess you would do this in any case, wouldn’t you? But if you would, then you can put any other plastic bag above and close the seat hole (till next use). And yes, certainly think of using black non-translucent bags.

Yet another problem may be with its legs; they will sink into a soft ground so you have to think where to put it. Some other options shown in the list here do not have such a problem.

The current price is $50. The weight is 3.5 lb (1.59 kg), the capacity is 250 lb (113 kg), and the height is 15.3 in (39 cm).

3. Reliance Hassock Portable Self-Contained Toilet

This is a very lightweight, portable, and completely self-contained toilet with a contoured seat and an inner splash cover which doubles as the toilet paper holder, see the picture.

There is also a detachable and easy to empty inner bucket. Though the tool is rather bulky as you see from the picture, so this may not be the best option if you have lots of stuff in the car.

But this is a system similar to the Luggable Loo toilet above from the same brand, so the base is wide and the system is stable, it will not sink in the ground regardless where you put it.

This is also a very affordable option, only $28 at the moment of writing this text. It is designed for camping and boating, and it comes with a five-year warranty against manufacturer’s defects.

This is a rather affordable tool with the price $28. The basic data are as follows. The weight is 5 lb (2.27 kg), the capacity is 275 lb (125 kg), and the dimensions (L x W x H) are 14.7 x 14.7 x 14 in (37 x 37 x 36 cm).

4. Cleanwaste Go Anywhere Portable Toilet

This tool has been on the market for at least 7 years now, popular globally and for all good reasons. This is an incredibly well designed and very portable tool that looks like a briefcase when packed, with a built-in carry handle, see the picture. So this is one of the best options here when it comes to the issue of transportation.

But it is impressive in many other ways, it weighs only 8 lb (3.6 kg), but it can be used by any sumo wrestler; its weight capacity is no less than 500 lb (227 kg) .

As you see in the picture, it is with three foldable legs, and the cover is removable and you can put it under the rear legs to prevent the toilet sinking in the ground. The system sets up in seconds, this is all about unfolding the legs which are locked in place when you unfold them one by one.

You will see in the video that it contains a mesh holder which holds the plastic bag in place. The seat and bowl size dimensions are the same as of a standard home toilet.

As of the moment of writing this text, the price is $66. The weight is 8 lb (3.6 kg) and it supports the user’s weight of 500 lb (227 kg). The dimensions (L x W x H) are 53 x 43 x 36 cm, and the packed size is 19 x 4 x 15 inches (48 x 10 x 38 cm).

5. Stansport 273-100 Portable Camp Toilet

This is a very compact and elegant design with a comfy full-size seat and a thick lid which very efficiently contains odors. In fact, I know that some people who have no bathroom upstairs, use this during the night at home.

This is a heavy-duty plastic construction that is able to support users’ weight up to 350 pounds (159 kg). So think about this option when you see the weight capacity of the Reliance Luggable model above.

The tool is with some indentations (slots) on the sides below the rim so that you can carry it from place to place. It comes with one disposable sanitary bag so it is ready to use. Inside of the main body you have a small bucket where you would put the plastic bag, so it can be removed for emptying.

Portable flushing toilets

This is a group of bulkier tools as you could have expected. But you will be surprised that their prices can be quite comparable with the much simpler waterless toilets shown above. When you see how they work you realize that there is a lot of technology and clever design in these flushing toilets.

Although they look bulky, in fact, they are surprisingly lightweight when empty.

7.  VINGLI Upgraded Portable Sink and Toilet Combo

As you realize from the picture and from the title, here you have a complete system which includes:

• A self-contained 5-gal handwashing station with sink and a foot pump.
• 5.3-Gal flushing toilet.

These two elements can be used separately and together so this is an ingenious 3-in-1 system .

The sink is with a manual switch and the foot pump creates a stream of water, this all works without plumbing and without any extra tools. 8. Thetford 92850 Porta Potti 320P Portable Toilet

One of the good things about this tool is the lever indicator that you have on the waste tank. It will turn red when it is full. This is what makes it different from several other models here in the list. This is a lightweight yet durable structure that weighs only 10.7 pounds (4.85 kg).

The water tank is around 16 liters, and this is enough for around 33 flushes. The Thetford is a globally known brand and they have quite a number of items of this type on the market, this is why I have added the numbers 92850 and 320P in the title above.

Releasing the waste tank is very easy and it is also very easy to empty it, you will see more in the video below. All in all, it is very compact, efficient, and an easy to use portable tool.

The price of this toilet is $103. The basic data include the weight of 10.7 lb (4.85 kg), the dimensions (W x L) 16.5 x 15 in (42 x 38 cm), and the height 13.4 in (34 cm). The waste tank volume is 3.2 gallons (12 L), and the freshwater tank is 4.2 gallons (16 L).

9. Camco 41541 portable toilet

This is a very affordable portable toilet, its current price on Amazon is only $65 – 78 dependent on the size. It is built with two sizes waste containers, 2.6 and 5.3 gallons (9.8 and 20 liters). This affects their height so you have 11.5 and 15 inches (29 and 38 cm) for the two versions, respectively. Many will find the former too low. They both contain the same amount of flush water, 2.5 gallons (9.5 liters).

Both toilets work on the same principle. Before using it, make sure you have filled the tank with water, you have an opening on the right. After you have done your “private job”, you have a handle below on the front (see the picture), so pull it and the waste will pass into the container below. Then press the pump on the left to splash the toilet.

When the waste tank becomes full, you detach the upper part, and on the back of the rank you have a cap that you unscrew and empty the tank. The tank is with a handle on the side so carrying it should not be a problem.

This is an enormously popular portable toilet and there are more than 940 customers reports on Amazon alone. The average rating is 4.3/5.

Camco has a great reputation and a good customer’s support service, so it is not surprising that their models are so popular.

The thing that is missing is the level indicator for the waste container.

The weight is 9.4 lb (4.3 kg) and 10.8 lb (4.9 kg), and the dimensions are (L x W) 14 x 16 in (36 x 41 cm). The height of the two models is 11.5 in (29 cm) and 15 in (38 cm).

10. Camco Premium Portable Travel Toilet 41545

The Camco is the top brand in this area and they have several top-rated and bestselling models on Amazon, one you have already seen above. They also have sub-variants for their models, so you can get confused. This Camco Premium comes in two tank sizes,

• 2.6 gallon (9.8 L), and
• 5.3 gallon (20 L).

This refers to the waste holding tanks. Now, the obvious consequence of this is their height. So the former is 12.5 inches (32 cm) high and the latter is 16 inches (40.6 cm) high. This may be important for some people, a too-low seat is not always so convenient, so bear this in mind.

Both versions contain 3.75 Gallons (14 L) of water. This is a great design, and probably the closest you can get to your home comfort when you are on a camping tour.

The structure is very stable and bulky, but it still needs some care when the freshwater tank is full and the waste container is empty. This is because the freshwater tank is in the upper section so the top area is heavier than the bottom. So just try to put it in a stable position when transporting it in the car.

There are more than 940 customer’s reports about the Camco 41545 on Amazon, and the average rating is exceptionally high 4.3/5.

The missing thing here is the same as in the other Camco model above, the level indicator for the waste container.

But how does it work ? It is best that you see this short video by Camco where you can see both versions of these flushable toilets:

The current price is $82. The weight when empty of the taller toilet is 11.5 lb (5.2 kg), and of the lower toilet is 11 lb (5 kg). The dimensions for both toilets (W x D) are 16 x 17 in (41 x 43 cm).

11. Dometic 972 Portable Toilet 2.6 Gallon

This Dometic 972 Portable Toilet is a very durable structure with several great features. This is a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) construction and this material is known for its toughness and high strength to density ratio. You can drop it and stand on it, and it will take it.

You have an attractive scratch-resistant matte finish, and it is easy to keep clean. It features an adult-size seat and a powerful push-button which makes a pressurized flush. One particular feature which I love here is its prismatic tank level indicator.

The waste holding tank is 2.6 gallons (9.8 liters) and in the video below you will see how to use the toilet and how to empty the tank. It has holding handles for both freshwater tank and for the waste tank.

The current price is $94. The basic data include the weight 12 lb (5.4 kg), the dimensions (W x D) 13.8 x 15.25 in (35 x 39 cm), and the height 12.5 in (32 cm). The freshwater tank volume is 2.3 gallons (8.7 L).

12. SereneLife Portable Toilet

This SereneLife SLCATL120 portable toilet comes with a tank for freshwater with 3.2 gallons capacity, which is enough for 50 times flushing. The waste container is huge 5.3 gallons, so you will not have to empty it very frequently. If you compare it with other models above you will see that it is the largest regarding the capacity.

They describe it as ideal for general travel, camping, picnicking, hiking, farming, RVs, etc. So indeed it is very versatile, but the same holds for the models presented above.

It is a corrosion-resistant, rugged, and durable construction and this is reflected in its weight; as you realize it is slightly heavier than the models above. You have a double-sealed drain valve to avoid leaks and odors, and the access to the waste tank is easy.

The current price is $80. The other data are as follows. The weight is 13 lb (5.9 kg), the dimensions (L x W) are 16.5 x 14.6 in (42 x 37 cm), and the height is 16.9 in (43 cm). The waste tank capacity is 5.3 gallons (20 L), and the freshwater tank capacity is 3.2 gallons (12 L).

13. Alpcour Portable Toilet

This portable toilet comes with its convenient carry bag shown in the picture above. The whole set weighs 14.6 lb (6.6 kg) and the weight capacity is 440 lb (200 kg) so this should be strong enough to support even the heaviest sumo wrestlers from the Japanese top division. The dimensions of the toilet are (L x W x H) 16.3 x 14.4 x 16.5 in (41 x 37 x 42 cm).

The set comes with an attachable washing sprayer. The waste tank is 5.3 gallons (20 liters) and the water tank is 3.2 gallons (12 liters). They claim this is large enough for 50+ flushes. Please follow the link for more.

Composting Portable Toilets

This is a really special design, suitable for RVs, small boats, and for camping. They are much more expensive than the models you have seen above, and they need no plumbing which you would need in conventional toilets.

This is a type that uses no, or very little, water. This because the waste is mixed with peat moss or sawdust, and it is transformed into a fertilizer, similar to the garden waste in your garden composter, just the composting stuff is different. You need a vent system so that the liquid evaporates. The resulting compost is safe to handle.

If used permanently in a closed space, you attach the toilet to the floor to secure the toilet in place. They have a pipe to vent the gasses and odors, so you make sure that it has access to the open air. The fan is needed to help moisture evaporation and this is practically all you need for such a system to work.

When the moment comes to empty the toilet you will realize that the unpleasant odors have dissipated, you will “see” this in the video below.

The types of the composting toilet presented below are self-contained , which means that the composting unit is the part of the toilet.

Such tools reduce water consumption and therefore the disposal of wastewater, they have low power consumption, and there is no need for transportation of wastes.

14. Nature’s Head Dry Composting Toilet with Standard Crank Handle

So this is one of the composting toilets included in my list, there is yet another from the same brand below. This was originally designed with the idea of having an off-grid system that would be user-friendly and environment-friendly. It is nicely built, easy to use, and this is a reliable tool in general. Lightweight yet durable, this is a tool that will serve you for years.

The great   thing is the lack of smell, and this holds for both the toilet and the compost product. You have seen a video above with a blindfolded guy who smells only “soil”.

The word “dry” in the name suggests that the toilet separates liquid waste into a different container which you will empty when it gets full. The rest in the waste container is with a minimum moisture level needed for composting to take place.

This tool comes at a price, but this is the leading brand and the tool is reliable. If you look around you will realize that this toilet has received very positive reports from users. The average rating on Amazon is an impressive 4.3/5.

The price is steep here, $940. The weight is 27.2 lb (12.3 kg), and the dimensions are 19.8 x 20.8 x 20.5 in (50 x 53 x 52 cm).

15. Nature’s Head Self Contained Composting Toilet

This is a compact and self-contained toilet with an elongated and comfortable seat. When you start using it, put 2 gallons of peat moss in the waste container. After you use the toilet, mix the content inside with the handle you have on the side. It is equipped with a vent pipe and a fan that works on 12 V.

It is designed to be used in a marine environment and practically anywhere, like on RVs or campers, in vacation cabins, workshops, barns, yurts, and trucks. This is a rugged design and materials (all stainless hardware) it has been proven to be extremely durable.

The urine is largely separated into its 2.2 gallons (8.3 L) container and if used by two people, you might need to empty it every two days depending on the use. As for the solids, you can speak about emptying it after 50 – 80 uses; so for two people this could mean one month.

But the bowl should be cleaned so use just a spray bottle and brush. The idea is to make the compost without chemicals.

The toilet has been tested up to 500 lb (227 kg). Note that composting only works in warm temperatures, ideally 55 F (13 C) and above.

This is again an expensive too with the price rag $960. The weight is 28 lb (12.7 kg), the length is 48.3 cm. The width is 48.3 cm or 58.3 cm dependent on the handle, and the seat height is 50.8 cm.

Which is the best portable toilet here & how to choose

There isn’t any toilet here which could be called the best. This depends on what you need, and the list presented here is to help you make an educated choice.

Waste disposal

Perhaps you do not know, but during WWII, the outcome of the huge battles in North Africa was at least partly affected by the waste disposal. English used wooden ammunition boxes and made holes in them and used them as toilets; then they would cover them with some cotton bags to prevent flies from going there and spreading the waste around. This helped in avoiding stomach illnesses and dysentery which did a lot of damage to the opposite German side.

So the disposal of waste and emptying of toilets is an important issue. The waterless tools are good because of the obvious clean way of dealing with waste, and it is even better if you use biodegradable sacks. They sometimes come with a powder that turns liquid waste to solids. So bury them deep enough and not close to any water source. Use also rapidly disintegrating toilet paper.

The toilets with water flush systems are convenient in regulated places where you can empty them, otherwise emptying them can become problematic because of possible restrictions.

The waterless toilets have some obvious advantages; there is no real cleaning here, you just need new disposal bags.

For flush toilets, you will need some deodorizer or cleaning agent. So have a look around and read included instructions to see what may be most appropriate. Sometimes you will have some samples included in the package.

You have seen one example above (the Cleanwaste GO Anywhere Total Toilet System ) where the problem of privacy is solved; you have the privacy tent/shelter included.

Final thoughts

So this was my selection of the best portable toilets for camping that are currently available on the market. You have plenty of options within the three major groups. The flushable toilets from the second group can be really affordable, bearing in mind that these are quite sophisticated structures as compared with the waterless models.

Thanks for pointing out that portable flushing toilets would be more expensive because they have water flushing systems. I will choose this type of portable toilet rental when my family goes camping this coming July. It is something that I want to be comfortable in when we stay outside for a week, so I will pick that option even if it is more expensive.

Jovo – what do you recommend for wiping? I know wet wipes, even the ones that claim they are “flushable” are not actually biodegradable. Wet wipes cannot be disposed of in the dump sites or in restrooms with flushing toilets. Personally, plain, old dry toilet paper doesn’t cut it in the wilderness when my family and I are already sweaty and dirty (dry TP doesn’t cut it at home either, for that matter, but its worse when camping). Thoughts on wiping with using one of these camping toilets?

Jovo, thank you for the input and for sending the article on rules and regs for what you can toss in the camping toilets. The article definitely says, ONLY toilet paper in the camping toilets and dump stations. Good to know! Also, in my research to plan for our Memorial Day trip this weekend I came across a product called Pristine toilet paper spray. It says that it is a spray that is sprayed onto toilet paper to keep you clean, and since it is used with toilet paper, it can be used in the camping toilets/buckets! I’m excited to try it. Amazon prime should have it to me before we leave on Friday! I’ll let you know how it turns out.

Next week all the men in my family are going on a week long camping trip and we are trying to find a portable toilet to use. Is there a specific type that might be better for a backpacking trip?

Yes it is as you quoted from the text, those are very popular models and there are many of them in the list to choose.

But for a backpacking trip? Assuming that you are not joking, I think this would be a bit too much. I normally only have a roll of toilet paper.

It’s encouraging to see the newer entrants like the Camco Travel Toilet and the Natur’e Head’s toilet stretching beyond the limit. A few year ago we used to have very few reliable brands of camping toilets; but despite the fact the number of campers worldwide remains more or less constant over the years, the camping potties seem to grow in popularity hence the increased innovation. Personally I would love to see improvements in terms of weight, because those who never camp in RVs will more often than not find the portable flush toilets a bit of a bulk. That means a majority of campers are left with a limited choice of the seat-type that require doodie bags; something a majority of people are not used to at home.

Thank you for commenting Daniel. I shall do some research to see about what you suggest regarding the weight, currently they all are in the same weight range around 5 kg. But I would not expect big changes soon regarding the hulk, I mean in the flush toilets group, they have to have some basic elements that are bulky by nature, unless some truly smart models appear. The list will be updated, these items are very popular.

But a comment about the number of campers. It seems it is growing in the US by 1 million per year, at least due to some sources . Also, the number of RVs is growing both in the US and in EU. So there will be more of these portable toilets on the market.

It helped a lot when you mentioned how waterless portable toilets are some of the more cheap options. I can see how anyone looking into this would want to look at all the available toilets in their area and choose one that can suit their needs best. Personally, I would also want to check the number of people that will be at my event before choosing a portable toilet.

Sure, I agree with you. I see them primarily as personal items and for family members. In the case of those waterless, if used by many people, I guess the best way would be to use each bag individually and remove after the job is done so that the seat remains ready and clean for another user.
