Why Did Adam Levine Leave ‘The Voice’? Inside His Reason for Exiting as He Announces Season 27 Return

Hugh Grant Jokes About Taylor Swift’s ‘Gigantic Boyfriend’

One of the original coaches of The Voice is making a comeback! NBC confirmed on June 5, 2024, that Adam Levine will be returning to the show for season 27 in 2025. The Maroon 5 frontman’s exit from the singing competition show in 2019 was quite controversial, as he had already signed on to coach another season when he announced his decision to leave.

When Is Adam Levine Returning to ‘The Voice’?

Adam will return to The Voice for season 27 alongside new coach Kelsea Ballerini and returnees John Legend and Michael Bublé . A premiere date for season 27 has not been confirmed, but it will likely air during the first half of 2025.

“Yeah, we’re back. We’re coming back. I’m coming back, is what I mean,” Adam said in a June 5, 2024, Instagram video. “Season 27, yes I’m coming back. I’m so excited. I cannot wait. I’m well rested. I’m ready to go. I’m a little nervous. I’m not nervous. But I’m so excited. It’s going to be great. I can’t wait. It’s gonna be awesome. Let’s go. Team Adam is back. I feel bad for other teams. Let’s go. Season 27 is going to be different. Yeah, I’m back. I’m really excited, everybody. Voice fam, here we come. Let’s go.”

Before Adam’s comeback, The Voice will return for season 26 in the fall of 2024 with Reba McEntire, Gwen Stefani , Michael and Snoop Dogg as coaches.

When Did Adam Levine Leave ‘The Voice’?

Adam previously left The Voice after season 16, which aired during the spring of 2019. Although Adam was already confirmed as a coach on season 17, host Carson Daly revealed on the May 24, 2019, episode of the Today show that Gwen would be replacing him for the upcoming season. The announcement came one day after the season 16 finale.

After the news broke, Adam wrote a lengthy statement on Instagram about his exit. “After the first day of shooting, I sat there, stunned. I said to myself “theres [sic] some magic here. Something is definitely happening.” It went on to be a life shaping experience that will be close to my heart forever,” the singer gushed. “Thank you NBC for signing me up. I am truly honored to have been a part of something I’ll always cherish for the rest of my life.”

He went on to thank “every single coach” he worked with on the show, as well as Carson and other people from the crew. The statement continued, “To the amazingly talented vocalists who competed on the show and make this machine hum. And, Blake F–KIN’ SHELTON. I couldn’t hide my love for you if I tried. Seriously. I tried. Can’t do it. Our friendship is and always will be one for the books. Whatever this whole surreal experience is, I’m just happy I got to experience it with you.”

His message concluded with a note to the fans. “There’s literally no show without you guys,” Adam said. “For me, it was time to move on. Your support has meant EVERYTHING.”

Why Did Adam Levine Leave ‘The Voice’?

In the seasons leading up to Adam’s exit , he failed to have success with his team members. He had no artists in the finals during seasons 14, 15 and 16.

A controversial decision during season 15 also led to Adam facing major backlash from fans. During that season’s top 10 episode, Adam had two artists – Reagan Strange and DeAndre Nico – left in the competition. However, they were both in the bottom three and in danger of elimination after their performances. The bottom three artists all had a chance to sing one last time for the instant save.

Reagan was sick that week and couldn’t perform her instant save song, but viewers were still able to vote for her if they wanted her to move on in the competition. Adam urged fans to vote for Reagan and give her another chance, which many viewers took as a slight to Nico, who Adam didn’t advocate as hard for, even though he performed during the instant save.

While Adam did not address the backlash, it was reported by TVLine in May 2019 that he was becoming increasingly difficult to work with. The site referenced an alleged incident that took place while the cast was pre-taping the season 16 semifinals, which Adam reportedly didn’t want to attend because he had no artists left.

An eyewitness told TVLine that the dad of three was “difficult” during the taping. The site noted that Adam’s alleged attitude “might have stemmed” from a rule change in the competition that season, which is what allowed so many of his team members to be eliminated at once. He also reportedly appeared unenthusiastic while performing with his fellow coaches at the NBC Upfront the following day.

“Adam had been checked out for a while,” a source told TVLine . “But this was a new low. It was essentially the straw that broke the camel’s back.”

Adam finally opened up about his decision to leave The Voice while appearing on Howard Stern’s radio show in October 2019. “I was ready to not be doing it anymore, I think for a little bit,” he admitted. “I think that when it all kind of naturally happened, I was like, ‘OK, it feels right.’ For better or worse, the moment in which we decided to walk away felt really good. It was the right time for me to go.”

He called The Voice a “life-altering experience” for him, but said he was ready to step away for his family. “It got to the point where I got married, I had two kids, and I wanted to spend time with them,” Adam explained. “They were really little.” The rocker married Behati Prinsloo in 2014 and they now have three children together.

Later that month, Adam appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and added, “I do miss it, but I also don’t miss how much I had to work. I was just constantly working for many years. Very lucky, very fortunate, very blessed and all that, but just to be able to stop in this moment to spend time with my new young family and just have the greatest time ever [was important].”

Adam levine’s guest returns to ‘the voice’.

Adam returned to The Voice during the season 20 finale in May 2021. He performed with his band, Maroon 5, and sang their song “Beautiful Mistakes.” He also made an appearance on the season 23 finale in May 2023 to help say goodbye to Blake Shelton as the country star concluded his final season of the show. During the season 25 finale in May 2024, Adam also briefly appeared to honor the show’s 25-season milestone.

However, he previously said he had no plans to return to the series as a coach. During an Instagram Q&A in 2020, a fan asked, “Come back to The Voice?” and Adam replied, “No thank you?”

How Many Times Did Adam Levine Win ‘The Voice’?

Although Adam didn’t have a great run during his last few seasons as a coach, he did see some success with his artists on the show over the years. He won the show three times during his 16-season run.

The Real Reason Adam Levine Left The Voice

Adam Levine on the red carpet

Back in 2019, Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine surprised fans when he announced that he was leaving NBC's " The Voice " after eight years on the show. According to Good Housekeeping , the "Moves Like Jagger" singer announced his departure from the hit reality competition on Instagram, and the news came as a surprise to many as Levine had previously been confirmed to be returning alongside fellow coaches Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, and John Legend for Season 17.

Speaking of his departure on Instagram  in 2019, Levine wrote, "I am truly honored to have been a part of something I'll always cherish for the rest of my life. Thank you to every single coach I ever sat in those chairs with. That is shared experience that is singularly ours. We have that for life. Thank you to everyone who supported this long strange and amazing left turn into a place I never thought I'd go."

But what's the real reason Adam Levine left "The Voice"? Keep reading to find out.

Why did Adam Levine decide to quit "The Voice"?

Adam Levine and his The Voice co-stars

The first sign that Adam Levine wanted to walk away from "The Voice" emerged during the taping of the Season 16 finale, when sources claimed that he "did not want to attend," per  TV Line . Because of this, the Maroon 5 singer "expressed frustration" during the filming of the finale and was allegedly "very difficult" to work with throughout.

According to Page Six , Levine's reported behavior could've stemmed from a major "The Voice" rule change during Season 16, which, unlike previous years, did not guarantee that each coach would enter the Live Playoff stage of the competition with an equal number of competitors. The rule change wound up cutting Levine's team of singers in half, and he was left with no competitors by the time the semifinals rolled around.

Per Oprah Daily , Levine previously addressed why he walked away from his coaching duties on "The Voice" during a 2019 appearance on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," revealing that he left to spend more time with his children. "I do miss it, but I also don't miss how much I had to work," he said. "I was just constantly working for so many years. Very lucky, very fortunate, very blessed, and all that, but just to be able to stop in this moment to spend time with my new young family and just have the greatest time ever."

So was it the rule change or the need for family time — or a little bit of both? We may never know.

Here's the Real Reason Adam Levine Left 'The Voice'

Plus, if he'll ever come back to the NBC show and if he's still friends with Blake Shelton.

preview for Everything You Need to Know About “The Voice”

Adam first shared the news with an emotional post on Instagram that paid tribute to his "life-shaping experience" on The Voice .

"After the first day of shooting, I sat there, stunned. I said to myself, 'Theres some magic here. Something is definitely happening,'" he wrote. "I am truly honored to have been a part of something I’ll always cherish for the rest of my life."

While the Maroon 5 singer said that he felt "it was time to move on" from The Voice , he did not offer any further explanation about his exit. After Gwen Stefani stepped in as his replacement, fans were left wondering about the real reason Adam left—and whether he would ever return.

Read on for all the details we have about Adam's departure from The Voice .

Why did Adam Levine leave "The Voice"?

There has been plenty of speculation over the years about Adam's decision to leave The Voice . TVLine reported that his exit stemmed from drama that took place during the season 16 semifinals, after Adam's entire team was eliminated. However, neither the former coach nor NBC ever confirmed those claims.

In October 2019, Adam finally shared the real motivation behind his departure: His family. During an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, the father of two said that leaving The Voice allowed him to focus on his wife and children.

"I was just constantly working for so many years—very lucky, very fortunate, very blessed and all that—but to just be able to stop in this moment to spend time with my new young family and just have the greatest time ever," he explained. "Now I'm just, like, a stay-at-home dad."

Will Adam come back to "The Voice"?

It doesn't seem likely. During that same interview with Ellen, Adam explained that while he misses the show, he doesn't miss all the time and energy it took to produce.

"I really do miss it. I love the people that I met and worked with, and obviously we all know how I feel about Blake," Adam said, referencing his love-hate relationship with coach Blake Shelton. "I do miss it but I also don't miss how much I had to work."

The singer doubled down on that statement in December 2020 during an Instagram Q&A with fans. When one follower asked if he would ever come back to the show, Adam's response was clear: "No thank you?"

Are Blake and Adam still friends?

Of course! Adam and Blake are known for their long-standing bromance, and their friendship didn't end when they stopped working together on The Voice . In fact, a large portion of Adam's exit announcement was dedicated to Blake alone.

"I couldn’t hide my love for [Blake] if I tried. Seriously. I tried. Can't do it," Adam wrote. "Our friendship is and always will be one for the books. Whatever this whole surreal experience was, Im just happy I got to experience it with you. You’re my brother for life."

Did you hear that? Brothers for life! (Watch their hilarious Super Bowl commercial if you want proof—and a good laugh. 😂)

Here's Why Adam Levine Is Really Leaving 'The Voice' After 16 Seasons

Gabrielle Bernardini - Author

Updated March 15 2021, 1:34 p.m. ET

Along with Blake Shelton, we’re heartbroken. Adam Levine has made the decision to leave the popular singing competition series, The Voice after 16 seasons. The Maroon 5 singer's BFF tweeted after the news broke that Adam would not appear on the upcoming season of the NBC show.

“Having a hard time wrapping my head around @adamlevine not being at @NBCTheVoice anymore," Blake wrote. "After 16 seasons that changed both of ours lives. I only found out about this yesterday and it hasn’t set in on me yet. Gonna miss working with that idiot."

Adam’s departure means that a coaching spot has opened up on the celebrity panel, and while we’re sad that we won’t get to witness their bromance, we’re sure Blake isn’t too sad about the "Girls Like You" singer’s replacement...

Why is Adam Levine really leaving The Voice?

Since the show’s inception in 2011, the singer has been a permanent fixture on The Voice competition. The 40-year-old broke his silence regarding his decision to leave, opening up alongside a throwback Rolling Stone cover of the original four Voice coaches.

“About 8 years ago, Mark Burnett convinced us to sign up for this show where you sit in a big red chair with your back turned away from the singers on the stage. First thank you must go to Mark. We had no idea what we were doing or where it was going. After the first day of shooting, I sat there, stunned. I said to myself ‘There’s some magic here. Something is definitely happening,'' he explained.

That is shared experience that is singularly ours. We have that for life. Thank you to everyone who supported this long strange and amazing left turn into a place I never thought I’d go. Thank you Carson Daly for babysitting the musicians and making sure our shoes were tied and we had our lunch boxes. You are the backbone of this thing and we appreciate you more than you know. Audrey, thank you for being perhaps the most patient person in all the free world. 4 musicians all at once is a lot. Sainthood is imminent. Thank you to Paul Mirkovich and the band for their ridiculously hard work and learning more songs than maybe any band ever. 😂 Thank you to the people behind the scenes who do the real work and make this machine hum. To the amazingly talented vocalists who competed on the show and blew my mind on a daily basis. And, BLAKE FUCKIN’ SHELTON. I couldn’t hide my love for you if I tried. Seriously. I tried. Can’t do it. Our friendship is and always will be one for the books. Whatever this whole surreal experience was, Im just happy I got to experience it with you. You’re my brother for life. Kelly and John, take care of the cowboy and I’m sure I’ll be back to say hi very very soon. So much love to you both. And lastly, to all of the loyal voice fans, there’s literally no show without you guys. For me, it was time to move on. Your support has meant EVERYTHING. And Lastly, I’d like to thank my manager Jordan for convincing me to take that meeting. 😊 What an amazing ride. Thank you all so much. ❤️ Adam A post shared by Adam Levine (@adamlevine) on May 24, 2019 at 8:12am PDT

"It went on to be a life shaping experience that will be close to my heart forever. Thank you NBC for signing me up. I am truly honored to have been a part of something I’ll always cherish for the rest of my life,” he added. Adam continued to thank individual members of The Voice family, and even gave a shout out to his on-screen BFF.

“I couldn’t hide my love for you if I tried. Seriously. I tried. Can’t do it. Our friendship is and always will be one for the books. Whatever this whole surreal experience was, I’m just happy I got to experience it with you. You’re my brother for life,” read his heartfelt message to Blake.

And no, this does not mean Adam is leaving Maroon 5.

Though many are shocked by Adam's sudden departure from The Voice , according to Entertainment Tonight , the pop star was feeling "burned out." A source told the outlet that he's been thinking of leaving for some time, and "he and NBC came to a mutual agreement for him to leave and that there are no hard feelings."

Adam is actually set to go on a European tour with his band this summer, kicking off the performances on June 1 in Denmark and ending August 31 in the Netherlands.

So, who will replace Adam Levine on The Voice?

Following the news of his departure, the NBC show announced that a familiar face would be returning to the show. "Don't Speak" singer and Blake’s longtime girlfriend Gwen Stefani will be making her comeback to The Voice now that Adam is gone. The No Doubt singer previously appeared as a coach on seasons 7, 9, and 12 of the show.

“Our friend and coach Adam Levine made the decision not to return next season. We’re going to miss Adam, but The Voice is family and with family it’s ‘see you soon,’ never ‘goodbye,” the NBC show tweeted in a statement.

"Gwen Stefani returns with Kelly, John, on The Voice stage this fall. Join us in welcoming back Gwen, and sharing our heartfelt gratitude to Adam."

We will certainly miss the "bickering" between Adam and Blake, but we are sure the country crooner and his girlfriend will have more than enough chemistry for viewers.

You'll be missed Adam!

The Real Reason Adam Levine Is Leaving The Voice

Adam Levine

Many fans were shocked when Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine announced his departure from NBC's reality competition series  The Voice   in May 2019. Levine, who served as one of the show's celebrity coaches for 16 seasons, addressed audiences in a lengthy Instagram post, writing , in part: "I am truly honored to have been a part of something I'll always cherish for the rest of my life. Thank you to every single coach I ever sat in those chairs with." No, we're not crying —  you're crying.

Given the show's popularity (It's been going strong since 2011), Levine's exit understandably confused some of its die-hard viewers. Why leave a successful TV series, right? Of course, there were many potential reasons that contributed to the singer's decision, some of which were more dramatic than others. Translation: Things are about to get complicated, folks. Although this wasn't our favorite topic to tackle (We'll miss Levine too!), we've deconstructed this unexpected news to explain why Levine is done spinning around in the show's infamous red chair. Listen up.

His last season was really rough

Adam Levine

Adam Levine's last season on The Voice didn't go so smoothly. Case in point: In one of the final elimination rounds for Season 16, the coach's entire team of contestants was  voted off . Ouch! Levine didn't take the upset lightly, complaining about the audience's diss in a conversation with one of his booted contestants, Mari Jones. "It's really upsetting that you're even here right now, because if you have eyes and ears," he said ("you" referring to the audience) — "you should never have let this happen," Levine added, "I don't understand, I don't get it. I'm in shock." Tell us how you really feel, Levine.

While we can't say for sure if this difficult episode played a role in Levine's decision, he certainly made it clear that he was not  happy about the dynamic. It's reasonable to surmise that the snub could have left a bad taste in his mouth and soured him on the whole show. Sure, most folks like to go out on top, but in Levine's case, this could have been the final push he needed to cut the cord and move on to something else.

Who cares about the haters? He might

Adam Levine

When you're the star of a big reality competition series like The Voice , it seems inevitable that you'll face fan backlash from time to time, and Adam Levine's experience has been no exception. Given all of the hate he's received over the years, it's reasonable to wonder if the critics are to blame for his May 2019 exit. After all, you just read how sensitive he was about audiences nixing his contestants in Season 16.

Some sources insist that all that criticism did not influence Levine's choice to beat feet. "Adam's decision was a difficult one for him," a source told Us Weekly . "It had nothing to do with backlash." It's worth noting that Levine has exhibited a thick skin in the past. Following his heavily criticized performance at Super Bowl LIII in February 2019, the singer acknowledged his lovers and haters alike. "We thank our fans for making our dreams possible," he penned on Instagram . "And we thank our critics for always pushing us to do better. One Love."

Sixteen seasons is...a lot

Adam Levine

Adam Levine starred on The Voice  since its inception in 2011, coaching numerous talented musicians throughout his lengthy run. While the Grammy-winning singer thoroughly enjoyed his time on the NBC hit series, noting that the show will be "close" to his "heart forever," 16 seasons is arguably a long time to stick around at any job. Levine said as much in his goodbye post on Instagram in May 2019: "For me, it was time to move on." Fair enough.

According to  The Wrap , an insider said Levine had been itching to move on "for a while," and all signs suggest NBC understood Levine's position. The network issued a statement that echoed Levin's upbeat and positive exit tone, expressing its " heartfelt gratitude " for the Maroon 5 frontman. We here you: This reason isn't too juicy, but there's no denying that Levine's run on The Voice  may have simply run its course. C'est la vie.

He could be making more time for family

Behati Prinsloo and Adam Levine

Adam Levine and his wife, Victoria's Secret model Behati Prinsloo , are parents two to adorable kiddos: Gio and Dusty Rose . Although Prinsloo hasn't announced another pregnancy at the time of this writing, it's possible that she and Levine want to expand their sweet family sooner than later, which could mean that The Voice isn't a big priority at the moment. Prinsloo hinted at the possibility of having more kids in a March 2019 interview with People : "It's not out of the question," she said. "I grew up an only child, so I always wanted a big family." The timing of this comment is a bit interesting because it occurred just two months before Levine announced his departure from the NBC series. Hmm .

If the duo are planning to add another baby to the brood, there's no question Levine will be a hands-on dad. "Our girls are so lucky to call you dad and I'm so lucky to have you as a husband a lover and a friend," Prinsloo wrote to Levine on Father's Day 2018. "We love you. Life is better with you." Aww .

This doesn't have to be goodbye

Blake Shelton, Adam Levine

Die-hard fans of  The Voice  may be happy to hear that Adam Levine could return to the reality competition series in the future. Levine's May 2019 goodbye announcement hinted at this possibility, teasing : "...I'm sure I'll be back to say hi very very soon." NBC did the same in its own statement : " We're going to miss Adam, but The Voice is family and with family it's 'see you soon,' never 'goodbye.' "

If it's true that Levine will come back to the show someday, we have a feeling fans will be thrilled to see him. "Adam is everything and more!!" one person tweeted  following the news of his departure. "It will not be the same without him." Another fan  said : "Gonna miss him and his back and forth jabs with @blakeshelton. It just won't feel the same." Though Levine seems good and ready to move on, it's got to be nice to know that he's still welcome in his old stomping ground.

Dude needs a break

Adam Levine

It's no secret Adam Levine is a busy guy, considering his 16 seasons on The Voice  and his musical responsibilities with Maroon 5, but is he working too much? It's possible, especially in the context of this quote from his wife, Behati Prinsloo, in March 2019. "I definitely think the older he gets, the more he's been taking care of himself, working out and doing yoga, Prinsloo told People . "He's so aware. He also doesn't drink much and is very much a workaholic."

Of course, there's always the chance that Levine wants to ease up on his workaholic ways now that he's getting a bit long in the tooth. The singer was 40 at the time of his departure from The Voice in May 2019, so we can't blame him this is the case — life is precious and he deserves to enjoy the fruits of his labor. A December 2017 report from Life & Style magazine touched on this sentiment, with a source telling the outlet (via Christian Today ): "He wants to be at home and chase after his kids." Enjoy your newfound free time, papa.

His co-stars understand

Adam Levine, Blake Shelton

Leaving a job can be tough, especially if you love your co-workers, but luckily for Adam Levine, his fellow Voice coaches — including Blake Shelton and Kelly Clarkson — are totally cool with his departure, despite their sadness about the situation. Case in point: After Levine announced his exit in May 2019, both Shelton and Clarkson issued sentimental goodbye messages via Twitter.

"Found out last night about @adamlevine leaving The Voice & while I get that he's been doing the show 4 a while & wants to step away, it will be weird showing up 4 work & he's not there," Clarkson tweeted . "To start an amazing show from the ground up is a big deal!" Shelton  penned : "Having a hard time wrapping my head around @adamlevine not being at @NBCTheVoice anymore ... Gonna miss working with that idiot."

For Levine, we suspect bidding farewell to his colleagues was bittersweet, but perhaps that decision was made a little easier thanks to the support of his co-stars.

He's already loaded

Adam Levine

Adam Levine reportedly enjoyed an annual $26 million a year contract at The Voice  – a staggering figure that puts his wealth into perspective. Not only was the singer making bank on the NBC reality competition series, but at the time of this writing, his total net worth comes in at $120 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth . Dang . Oh, and did we mention that Levine sold his massive house days before he announced his departure from the show in May 2019? Yep, he sold the property to Ellen DeGeneres for a cool $45 million, according to  TMZ . Talk about a major real estate win.

Levine makes so much dough, in fact, that he has leftover funds for charitable causes. Ahead of its February 2019 gig performing at the Super Bowl Halftime show, Maroon 5  donated  $500,000 to Big Brothers Big Sisters. Let's just say there's a good chance Levine doesn't need The Voice to thrive financially.

He left the show in good hands

Gwen Stefani

When Adam Levine left The Voice , he had the perfect replacement waiting in the wings — No Doubt singer (and Blake Shelton's girlfriend) Gwen Stefani.  "Gwen Stefani returns with Kelly, John, and Blake on  The Voice  stage this fall," NBC tweeted in May 2019, after Levine's goodbye announcement. "Join us in welcoming back Gwen, and sharing our heartfelt gratitude to Adam."

Not only is Stefani a bonafide star, but she appeared on the show as a coach for  Seasons 7, 9, and 12 . Translation: She's got this in the bag. Making matters even better for viewers? Stefani's relationship with Shelton should make for some interesting on-air banter. In fact, Levine has testified about the couple's love in the past. "They're so in love it's disgusting," he joked to Howard Stern in October 2017 (via Taste of Country ). Knowing the series was in good hands probably gave Levine the confidence he needed to leave.

On May 10, NBC announced that season 17 of The Voice would include judges Kelly Clarkson , Blake Shelton , John Legend and Adam Levine . Then, 14 days later, host Carson Daly announced an abrupt change.

“After 16 seasons, Adam Levine, our beloved coach and friend, has decided to leave The Voice ,” Daly, 45, said on the Today show on Friday, May 24. “Adam was one of the original coaches that launched the show, winning the competition three times and inspiring many of the artists he worked closely with over the years.”

Levine, 40, came under fire in season 15 when he seemingly played favorites when he went to bat for singer Reagan Strange. He again made headlines after the NBC Upfront presentation on May 13 where he performed with his fellow judges but looked less than thrilled to be there. However, neither are his reasons for exiting, a source close to the Maroon 5 frontman tells Us .

Adam Levine Quits The Voice Backlash

“Adam’s decision was a difficult one for him. It had nothing to do with backlash,” the insider told Us after the news broke on Friday. Another source added that the singer had disliked the show for multiple seasons now as he didn’t like the format or the fact that America favors country music: “Things have been very tense between the judges and everything regarding upfronts was demonstrative of this. It was his choice to go but no one was begging him to stay.”

The decision shocked longtime fans of the show who have grown to love watching the banter between Shelton, 42, and Levine, 40, who were the only two original judges still part of the show. However, the news also shocked Shelton.

Why did Adam Levine leave The Voice?

Adam Levine in 2020

Adam Levine returned to The Voice for this season’s finale, but it sparked questions about the Maroon 5 singer’s original departure from the show in 2019.

His departure was unexpectedly announced following the Season 16 finale, a shocking revelation for one of the show’s original coaches.

While he maintains that his experience on The Voice was great, it seems his exit came at a good time for the singer.

When he left, he thanked fans for their support and thanked NBC as well for getting him the job in the first place.

Still, some fans weren’t convinced that Adam’s departure was so cut and dry.

Adam Levine reportedly ‘very difficult’ during last tapings

One reason fans believe Adam may have left the show was due to some personal differences and frustration.

TVLine reported that in May 2019 , Adam “expressed frustration” at having to be at some pre-recorded tapings since he had no artists left and didn’t want to be at the taping.

The source also reports that he was “very difficult” to work with during the taping, and the following day he and the other judges went to New York City for the NBC Upfronts, where once again, executives for NBC were reportedly not thrilled with the way Adam was acting.

There were also reports that he wasn’t happy with changes to the show, but Adam has not spoken out on these reports.

Other reports seem to believe that some infighting between the judges led to his departure, though Adam has not spoken on that either.

However, his alleged behavior isn’t the only backlash Adam faced prior to his departure.

Adam Levine’s controversial Season 15 on The Voice

Another reason some believe Adam left has to do with his controversial actions during Season 15 of the show.

Long-time viewers may remember when his two artists left in the Top 10 were on the brink of elimination.

Reagan Strange and DeAndre Nico were Adam’s only contestants left, and on the day of the Instant Save, Reagan wasn’t able to perform live.

DeAndre still performed for a chance to continue on the show but, unfortunately, was eliminated.

The controversy ? Since Reagan couldn’t perform, Adam still urged viewers at home to vote for her to try to save her a spot. However, he didn’t do the same for DeAndrew, who was eliminated at the time.

Reagan won the vote and was saved momentarily, though she was eliminated the very next episode.

The Voice is currently on hiatus.

Why did the rings of power recast adar, star wars: the acolyte's manny jacinto breaks silence on series cancellation.

NBC's hit reality singing competition,  The Voice , is currently in its 21st season. However, despite the new additions of famous coaches, fans can't seem to move past the departure of Adam Levine. With a stable production schedule, exposure and a generous salary, the question remains. What prompted the pop star to leave the spinning coach chair?

How long was Adam Levine on The Voice?

Followers of The Voice were shocked when beloved host Adam Levine decided to depart from the show in 2019. Levine, who is known primarily as the frontman of pop band Maroon 5, was an original host alongside Christina Aguilera, CeeLo Green, and Blake Shelton. Based on The Voice of Holland , the four music icons acted as rival coaches, building teams of singers during the audition rounds of the show. Levine's run on the program started in 2011 and lasted sixteen seasons, three of which saw Team Adam win the top prize.

Those who consistently watch The Voice are used to a revolving door of artists sitting in the coaching chairs. As of 2021, there have been 15 different musicians, from Pharrell to Ariana Grande, who have acted as coaches. However, until Levine's sudden departure after Season 16, he and Shelton were the only two who were featured on every consecutive season.

By all accounts, Levine enjoyed his time on the show. As all coaches, Levine was extremely supportive of the singers he'd bring onto his team. He would consistently find his singers in the final rounds of the show and led three of them, Javier Colon, Tessanne Chin and Jordan Smith to victory. Followers of the program consistently enjoyed the budding bromance between Levine and Shelton, whose constant banter added both laughs and tension to the reality competition. Not only did Levine enjoy his time on the show on a personal level, but also on a monetary level. According to Vanity Fair, Levine made somewhere between 14 million and 30 million dollars per season of the show.

Why did Adam Levine leave The Voice?

With fans of the show being well aware of this information, many asked how someone could depart from what seemed like the perfect job. Thankfully, Levine has discussed his departure from the show many times in an effort to give fans some insight into his decision. In October of 2019, the pop star sat across from Ellen promoting something other than The Voice for the first time.

During the interview, Levine discussed his departure with a somber tone saying: "I do miss it, but I don't miss how much I had to work... I was very lucky, blessed, fortunate and all that... but to be able to stop in this moment to spend time with my new young family has been just the greatest time ever." Levine married Victoria's Secret model Behati Prinsloo in 2014 and has since fathered two children with her. Recently, the two announced another little one will soon be joining their growing family.

At the end of the day, 16 seasons on any production is a long time to stick around. CeeLo Green had enough after four! While it may have been a shock to fans, most respect Levine's choice to focus more of his time on his family and tour with his band. The show's 21st season is well underway with new celebrity judge Ariana Grande, and The Voice seems like it still has a lot of legs, even without Adam Levine.

Levine said he was feeling a little bit anxious, but quickly backtracked, "I’m not nervous, but I’m so excited… I can’t wait, it is going to be awesome."

"Team Adam is back, I feel bad for other teams ," he quipped in the caption. "Season 27 is going to be different ... I’m really excited everybody Voice fam here we come. Let’s go."

Alongside the pop singer, Kelsea Ballerini will also be joining the panel of judges, which includes award-winning artists John Legend and Michael Bublé .

As OK! previously reported, Levine left The Voice in 2019 after spending 16 seasons on the popular show. At the time, he explained that he wanted to focus on time with his family .

"I was ready to not be doing it anymore ... for a little bit," he shared in a 2019 interview with Howard Stern . "When it all naturally happened, I was like, 'Okay, this feels right.' For better or worse, the moment in which we decided to walk away felt really good. This was the right time for me to go."

"For eight-and-a-half years, I was so busy — [I] had the band, [I] had The Voice ," he continued. "I was beyond fortunate to go through all of it because it was a life-altering experience being on that show ... and then it got to the point where I got married, I had two kids, and I wanted to spend time with them."

The Real Reason Why Adam Levine Decided to Leave 'The Voice'

The Maroon 5 frontman was on the NBC singing show for 16 seasons.

  • Adam Levine is returning to The Voice season 20 finale after four seasons away.
  • The Maroon 5 singer left The Voice after season 16 concluded.
  • Adam is currently the co-executive producer of the NBC show Songland, which premiered in May 2019.
  • According to TVLine, NBC execs were "furious" with Adam's behavior during a Voice semifinals taping for season 16.

"I am truly honored to have been a part of something I’ll always cherish for the rest of my life," the Maroon 5 singer wrote. "To all of the loyal voice fans, there’s literally no show without you guys. For me, it was time to move on. Your support has meant EVERYTHING."

Adam's departure was even more surprising given that he was previously announced as returning for season 17, alongside Blake Shelton , Kelly Clarkson , and John Legend .

Ever since Adam announced he was leaving, Voice fans have continually hoped he would return to the NBC competitions series in the near future. Now, fans are getting their wish as TVLine recently confirmed that Adam is coming back to perform Maroon 5's latest hit "Beautiful Mistakes" with Megan Thee Stallion for the two-hour season 20 finale on Tuesday night.

Why did Adam Levine decide to leave The Voice ?

It's hard to tell what exactly prompted him to exit so abruptly. But while Adam simply said it was "time to move on," TVLine once reported that there may be more to the story.

According to the outlet, drama started on May 12, 2019 when Adam, Kelly, Blake, and John were taping the semifinals of season 16. Apparently, according to "sources," Adam "did not want to attend the Sunday taping." As a result, the "Moves Like Jagger" singer "expressed frustration" with having to be present when he had no artists in the race for the season 16 title. He was also allegedly "very difficult" during the entire taping.

The report continues to say that NBC's co-chairman of entertainment, Paul Telegdy , was "very unhappy" with what he saw and was "embarrassed" and "furious" that Adam would "display such an attitude to the people (advertisers) who actually pay for his salary."

the voice season 16

What's more, Page Six pointed out that Adam was reportedly upset about a season 16 rule change that didn't guarantee each coach went into the Live Playoffs with the same number of competitors. Because of this, Adam's team was cut in half and he ended up having no one competing from his squad for the semifinals.

This "intel," of course, hasn't been confirmed by NBC at all, so take it with a grain of salt at this point. Also, The Voice wrote a rather touching message on Instagram about Adam being on the show and made it clear that Adam was the one who "made the decision not to return next season."

All in all, Adam could've left for a much less dramatic reason — like, perhaps, his schedule outside of The Voice. Adam, alongside songwriter Ryan Tedder , began producing the NBC show Songland , which premiered in May 2019 . Unlike other singing competition shows on TV, Songland is meant to showcase the creative process that goes into making a hit song.

Adam Levine abruptly, mysteriously leaves 'The Voice' after 16 controversial seasons

On May 10, NBC officially announced that all four of The Voice ’s most recent coaches — Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, and Adam Levine — would return for Season 17 in the fall. However, on Friday morning it was abruptly announced that Levine, who has coached on every season without a break since the series premiered in 2011, will not be returning this year after all. Shelton revealed on Twitter that he only learned about Levine’s departure a day earlier.

It’s not totally clear right now whether Levine is off the show for good, or if — like his fellow original coach Christina Aguilera, who took time off after Season 3 but then appeared on three more non-consecutive seasons — he may be back one day. But in a 2017 Yahoo Entertainment interview , when asked if he’d ever take a temporary hiatus from The Voice , Levine bluntly answered, “I will tell you this much: I will never take a season off. If I take a season off, it will be for every season thereafter, in perpetuity, for the rest of my life.”

And Levine’s Friday announcement on Instagram, while positive, thankful, and eloquently worded, definitely has a sense of finality to it. Along with bidding farewell to every single person he’s worked with — singling out “BLAKE F***IN’ SHELTON,” whom he calls his “brother for life” — he says it is “time to move on” and signs off with, “I am truly honored to have been a part of something I’ll always cherish for the rest of my life.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Adam Levine (@adamlevine) on May 24, 2019 at 8:12am PDT

A Friday Instagram post from The Voice states, “We’re going to miss Adam, but The Voice is family and with family it’s ‘see you soon,’ never ‘goodbye’” — seemingly leaving the door open for Levine if he ever has a change of heart. However, a source with knowledge of the situation tells Yahoo Entertainment that “no one behind the scenes wants him to return.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by NBC's The Voice (@nbcthevoice) on May 24, 2019 at 8:20am PDT

It had become abundantly clear from his attitude that Levine, whose last victory on The Voice was with Jordan Smith in Season 9, no longer seemed happy to be on the show. His once-adorable banter with Shelton had become testy and sometimes downright nasty, and after he threw his Season 15 contestant DeAndre Nico under the bus on the most bizarre Voice episode ever , diehard viewers were rallying for him to be fired. The backlash and Levine’s waning popularity as a coach became especially evident during this just-wrapped season (which culminated in the series’ lowest-rated finale ever): After the public vote, most of his team was wiped out during the Cross-Battles and was entirely eliminated in the top 13 week , leaving him with no contestants at all during last two weeks of the competition.

A source tells TV Line that Levine was frustrated by the show’s new rules, which no longer ensured that each coach would advance to the Live Playoffs with the same number of team members, and that he became “very difficult” and no longer wanted to participate once he had no more singers in the game.

Very telling was Levine’s demeanor when the four coaches performed a Rolling Stones medley at the Upfronts earlier this month. While Shelton, Legend, and Clarkson seemed to be pouring themselves into the performance, bringing great energy and interacting with each other and the audience, Levine was unenthusiastic, for the most part motionless and frowning. A YouTube video of the performance has since been taken down. TV Line reports that the NBC powers-that-be were “furious.” Says another Yahoo source who was present, “He sang, but he made it so clear he did not want to be there. It was disgusting. ... He made it impossible not to hate him.”

In his 2017 Yahoo interview , Levine suggested either Justin Timberlake or Bruno Mars as his potential successors. However, this fall his red chair will actually be filled by Gwen Stefani, who was a coach on Seasons 7, 9, and 12. So, it’ll be an end to the long-running Levine/Shelton TV bromance, but Shelton’s real-life romance with girlfriend Stefani, whom he met on The Voice , will be back onscreen. (Side note: Shelton had suggested David Lee Roth!)

Having a hard time wrapping my head around @adamlevine not being at @NBCTheVoice anymore. After 16 seasons that changed both of ours lives. I only found out about this yesterday and it hasn’t set in on me yet. Gonna miss working with that idiot. — Blake Shelton (@blakeshelton) May 24, 2019

While Levine is off The Voice , mostly likely permanently, he’s not leaving the NBC family altogether. Songland , a new songwriting competition for which he is the executive producer, premieres on the network next Tuesday, May 28.

Why Adam Levine Isn't On 'The Voice' For The First Time In The Show's History

why did adam levine cancel his tour

For the first time in the history of The Voice , Adam Levine will not be a judge on the show. After 16 seasons, the Maroon 5 singer wrote in a May Instagram post that it was simply "time for him to move on." He and Blake Shelton were the only remaining judges from the original lineup, and now, Shelton's officially the last one standing.

Aside from Levine's general statement that he's ready for a new chapter, he hasn't said much publicly about why he decided to leave The Voice or what's next for him. On Sept. 20, Maroon 5 did release a new single called "Memories," which could mean he plans to dedicate more time to the band. He promoted the track on Zane Lowe's Apple Music’s Beats 1 show, where he talked about how The Voice elevated his stature as a musician .

"Being on The Voice and stuff really changed that even more," he said per E! News, referring to his public status. He added that these days, he's even recognized by "people's grandparents," saying the series "kind of launched me into the bizarre territory of being, I guess for lack of a better phrase, a household name."

Now, Levine is taking advantage of that publicity by making more music. "This song is for anyone who has ever experienced loss," he wrote about "Memories" on Twitter. "In other words, this song is for all of us." This could mean Levine is using his extra time to work on Maroon 5's next album, but nothing official has been announced yet. (They last released 2017's Red Blue Pills ).

For Season 17, Gwen Stefani will take Levine's spot on The Voice panel. She's been a judge on the show before, and she told The Talk in June that she's excited to be back . "It was such a shock," she said, referring to Levine's last-minute resignation . "I wanted to come back so bad. I mean, the show is so fun." However, she added that she's happy for Levine and the opportunities this will provide for him.

"Im happy for Adam, because he's been doing it 16 seasons… He has his baby," she continued. "He's going to be able to go on tour and do music in a different kind of way."

So not only will Levine have more time to spend on music, he'll have more time to spend with his family. He's been married to model Behati Prinsloo since 2014, and together they have two young daughters : Dusty Rose and Gio Grace. According to a Sept. 22 Instagram post from Levine, Dusty just turned three years old.

And the couple may not be finished expanding their family. In March, Prinsloo told People that their daughters could eventually have another sibling . "It's not out of the question,” she said. "I grew up an only child, so I always wanted a big family."

Levine could be using his newfound time off to prepare for that as well. He may have given up his seat in the rotating red chair, but he still has plenty to keep him busy.

'The Voice': Why Adam Levine Left

Details are now coming out about Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine's unexpected departure from The Voice [...]

By Daniel S. Levine - June 1, 2019 04:47 pm EDT

Details are now coming out about Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine 's unexpected departure from The Voice ahead of Season 17. Reports say that Levine's issues tie into the final weeks of Season 16 and drama surrouding NBC 's Upfront advertiser presentation.

Now the details of how that sudden decision came about have leaked, and it dates back to Levine's behavior during the Season 16 semifinals and NBC 's upfront presentation last week.

Sources told TVLine Levine did not want to attend Sunday's semifinals taping, as he had no artists left in the competition by then. Once he was there, Levine made it known he did not want to be there, with one eyewitness describing him as "very difficult." He often refused to offer comments on other contestants.

Levine was reportedly not a fan with a Season 16 rule change that did not guarantee at least one performer from each coach's team in the Live Playoffs. The Live Cross Battles took the place of the Knockouts, and his team was cut down to just four performers. By the time they reached the semifinals, all of Levine's singers were gone.

During the May 13 episode, Levine's frustrations even made it on air. While he did praise Blake Shelton's singer Andrew Sevener, John Legend contestant and eventual winner Maelyn Jarmon, Legend contestant Shawn Sounds and Kelly Clarkson contestant Rod Stokes, Levine was quiet for the rest of the show. When Levine talked about Stokes, he was clearly not happy with the new rules.

"I still don't understand how you're not on my team. I don't think anybody does, just 'cause it's weird how it works now," the "Moves Like Jagger" singer said. "I'm still learning the rules of the new show."

Levine's performance at NBC's upfront presentation also disappointed executives, according to TVLine . Levine sang a bit during the presentation, but was nowhere near as animated as Shelton, Clarkson and Legend.

"Adam had been checked out for a while, but this was a new low," an insider told the outlet. "It was essentially the straw that broke the camel's back."

NBC Entertainment Co-Chairman Paul Telegdy was reportedly so "furious" and "embarrassed" by Levine, he wanted him fired right away. Eventually, he backed down on that idea, and one source said Telegdy and executives were actually appreciative the coaches went to New York in person during the week they were filming live shows in Los Angeles.

When NBC announced The Voice would be coming back for a 17th season on May 10, the peacock network said all four Season 16 judges would be back. But on Friday, Daly announced Levine was leaving , and Gwen Stefani was picked as his replacement .

After the news broke, Levine took to Instagram , where he thanked everyone involved in the show and said it was "time to move on." He also reflected on his friendship with Shelton , who served as a judge with Levine for all 16 seasons.

"I couldn't hide my love for you if I tried. Seriously. I tried. Can't do it," Levine wrote of Shelton. "Our friendship is and always will be one for the books. Whatever this whole surreal experience was, Im just happy I got to experience it with you. You're my brother for life."

Adam Levine Apologizes for 'Unprofessional' Concert In Chile After He Receives Backlash

Super Bowl 2019: Watch Shirtless Adam Levine Rock Halftime Show

The singer admitted that he struggled with the performance.

Adam Levine  is saying sorry to his fans in Chile.

The Maroon 5 frontman  took to his Instagram Story on Friday to apologize for his "unprofessional" behavior during the band's performance at the Viña del Mar International Song Festival the night before.

"I’d really like to address reactions to the concert and kind of explain myself because I feel like you guys deserve that," Levine explained in his video. "You know, being in a band you play a lot of shows and I am so passionate and excited about concerts and about being my best and about the band being our best, and being our best for you guys, honestly, you know. Performing I take so seriously. Sometimes too seriously.”

"And to be totally frank, there were some things holding me back sonically last night," he continued. "And I let them get to me, and it impacted how I was behaving on stage, which was unprofessional and I apologize for that."

He added that he always wants to be the best and represent the band in the best way. "I struggled a lot and sometimes it’s really hard for me to mask the struggle. For that, I did let you guys down and I apologize," he said, adding that it's "one show of many" and that they adore their fans in Chile.

“Last night wasn’t our best and, for that, all I can say is that I’m really sorry," he concluded.

According to CHV Noticias , Levine delivered "low energy" while on stage. In another video posted online , the 40-year-old singer sounds frustrated as he can be heard saying, "That was a TV show. That was not a concert.” Many fans in attendance took to social media to express their disappointment in the singer's performance or poke fun at him.

"I just saw #Maroon5 show in the latin festival and it was SO bad d**n, and then i saw how he insulted the organization and the city? Like what?? I feel bad for the latin people, he was so disrespectful," one person tweeted.

The band also performed in Santiago, Chile, on Friday night. The concert was well received by fans on social media.

Adam Levine Wraps Summer Shows with Maroon 5 as Source Says He's 'Excited' to Be Back on  The Voice

Maroon 5 headed to the East Coast in late June and early July for a few select dates and will next be back onstage for their upcoming Las Vegas residency shows

Adam Levine  has a lot to look forward to!

After Maroon 5 wrapped their short East Coast tour and headlined Milwaukee and Ottawa festivals, Levine is preparing for his return to The Voice, which starts filming this summer.

"Adam is excited to be back on  The Voice  [set] this summer and looking forward to the new season," a source exclusively tells PEOPLE of the new season that is set to air in 2025.

In addition to The Voice , the Maroon 5 frontman — who performed fan-favorite hits like "This Love," "Moves Like Jagger" and "Sugar" with the band over the weekend — is also preparing for the second half of the band's Las Vegas residency , which kicks off Sept. 27.

"New music is also coming soon," the source tells PEOPLE of the group.

Maroon 5 kicked off their Las Vegas residency at Dolby Live at Park MGM in March 2023. The shows ran through August of that year, and in December, it was announced that the band was returning to Sin City for 16 more shows, beginning in May 2024.

“I’m really look forward to doing it again and honestly could never have told you that  before we started ,” Levine previously told PEOPLE , admitting he was initially “skeptical” of the residency. "I had no idea what to expect. Obviously I went into it with an open mind and a good attitude, but I was actually shocked at how much I enjoyed it.”

After the first half of their Vegas residency wrapped on June 1, Maroon 5 took a short break before traveling to the East Coast this summer for a few select dates through Michigan, Indiana, Toronto, North Carolina, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and New York. In early July, they headlined Milwaukee and Ottawa music festivals.

The second half of their Vegas residency picks back up on Sept. 27, and the band will play another eight shows before wrapping on Oct. 12.

Before returning to Vegas, Levine will start filming season 27 of The Voice beside fellow coaches  John Legend ,   Michael Bublé  and newcomer  Kelsea Ballerini . His return to the show, which was announced in early June, marks the first time he has come back since his departure in season 16.

At the time of his exit, Levine opened up about his decision to leave , penning a lengthy note on Instagram in May 2019.

“About 8 years ago, Mark Burnett convinced us to sign up for this show where you sit in a big red chair with your back turned away from the singers on the stage. First thank you must go to Mark. ❤️ We had no idea what we were doing or where it was going,” he wrote. “After the first day of shooting, I sat there, stunned. I said to myself 'there’s some magic here. Something is definitely happening.' It went on to be a life shaping experience that will be close to my heart forever.”

In his note, Levine also gave a shout-out to his best bud Blake Shelton , whom he coached alongside since the show's premiere. “Our friendship is and always will be one for the books. Whatever this whole surreal experience was, I’m just happy I got to experience it with you. You’re my brother for life," he wrote to the country star.

In May 2023, Levine  returned to  The Voice  stage  with Maroon 5 to perform their single "Middle Ground."

NBC has yet to announce a premiere date for season 27, but season 26 is set to air this fall.

Why Did Adam Levine Leave 'The Voice'? What to Know Before Season 17

This year's coaches are Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, Gwen Stefani, and Blake Shelton.

The Voice - Season 11

  • Levine co-executive produced Songland , NBC’s new songwriting competition series, which aired this past summer. The new show could have been one of the reasons he left The Voice.
  • While The Voice co-star Kelly Clarkson has said “ I kind of get it ” in regards to Levine’s exit, reports have surfaced that he was “ wanting to move on for a while .”
  • Season 17's coaches will now be John Legend, Gwen Stefani, Kelly Clarkson, and Blake Shelton. Oh, and Taylor Swift has signed on as a mentor.

If you’re a diehard fan of The Voice , prepare for season 17 to look a little different.

In May, the show’s host Carson Daly announced during a segment on TODAY that longtime judge Adam Levine—best known for his work with Maroon 5—would make season 16 his very last. Daly said Levine “will always be a cherished member of The Voice family, and of course we wish him nothing but the best.”

In a lengthy Instagram post following the announcement, Levine shared a throwback image of the original cast on the cover of Rolling Stone —along with a sweet message. “About 8 years ago, Mark Burnett convinced us to sign up for this show where you sit in a big red chair with your back turned away from the singers on the stage,” Levine wrote.

He continued, “I am truly honored to have been a part of something I’ll always cherish for the rest of my life. Thank you to every single coach I ever sat in those chairs with. That is shared experience that is singularly ours. We have that for life. Thank you to everyone who supported this long strange and amazing left turn into a place I never thought I’d go.”

And while Levine’s post moved on to thank co-stars such as Blake Shelton and everyone behind the scenes, he didn’t offer an explanation about why he’s leaving. According to People , he’s been unhappy with the show for quite some time.

“He’s been wanting to move on for a while,” a source told People . They wanted him to stay but he just really wanted to move on. It’s something he’s been talking to [host] Carson [Daly] and the other coaches about for some time.”

The source continued, “He really didn’t like some of the changes to the format of the show last season, and it’s just time for him to leave… “It wouldn’t be surprising if he came back to visit the show though. There’s new music coming soon for him, he’ll be touring and he plans to continue acting. He’s staying busy.”

And while it would make sense for Levine to leave a hit show after 16 seasons, we suspect it could have something to do with another major project: NBC’s Songland .

What does that have to do with Levine? A lot. The Maroon 5 frontman is a producer for the new songwriting competition show, which premiered on Tuesday, May 28. Plus, considering the show is all about making hit songs—and Maroon 5 has won three Grammys—Levine’s input could seriously come in handy.

Minutes before Tuesday’s premiere, Levine posted a video promoting the new show, an indicator that he's definitely super pumped about the series.

In June, Gwen Stefani opened up returning to the show during an interview with The Talk . "It was such a shock," she said. "I wanted to come back so bad. I mean, the show is so fun!

Tune in to see how season 17 looks different on Monday, September 23 at 8 p.m. ET.
