Considering sights, weather, traveler sentiment and annual events (among other factors), U.S. News rounded up the best places to visit in May. Whether you're looking for an outdoor adventure in a national park, a quick Memorial Day getaway or a leisurely beach vacation , you can't go wrong with these destinations. Bryce Canyon National Park

When May comes around in Bryce Canyon National Park, the snow is nearly gone, which means the park's main road and popular trails are likely to be open. Highs are typically in the 60s during the day, too – ideal conditions for hiking and biking this Utah park's paths. Visitor numbers start to ramp up this month, but it's still early enough in the season that you're unlikely to have to jostle for a view at the popular Bryce Point, which overlooks Bryce Amphitheater, a landscape of otherworldly rock spires (called hoodoos).

This Portuguese island chain in the Atlantic Ocean offers a little bit of everything for active travelers, from geoparks and waterfall hikes to paragliding. Though the weather here is always a bit unpredictable, the chances of wind and rain are lower in May. The water temperature also begins to warm up for must-do activities like snorkeling or swimming with dolphins, and with fewer swells than the winter months, beginner surfers will feel more comfortable trying to hang ten. As an added bonus, the biggest festival in the Azores – the Feasts of Santo Cristo dos Milagres – typically occurs in May.

Travelers looking for a vacation filled with unique and heart-pumping activities should set their sights on Cappadocia. This mountainous region in central Turkey is home to a UNESCO-listed national park, centuries-old underground cities, ancient cave dwellings, magnificent rock formations and more. Plus, thanks to average temperatures in the 60s and 70s in May, activities like soaring high above the Göreme Valley on a hot air balloon tour and driving a four-wheel-drive vehicle past fairy chimneys couldn't be more pleasant.

As one of the warmest and driest times of year in Palawan, May welcomes travelers with open arms. Take advantage of the minimal rainfall by experiencing all of the outdoor activities and attractions that this Philippine island has to offer –spoiler alert, there are a lot. Spend time relaxing on Palawan's white sand beaches, island-hopping or even swimming with gentle whale sharks. Water sports are popular in this destination as well, from diving Tubbataha Reef to kayaking El Nido's Big Lagoon.  

Visiting Granada, Spain, in May is a no-brainer. Average temperatures in the mid-70s, blooming flower displays (at Generalife Gardens) and a full roster of events make this Andalusian city a must-visit in the spring. Día de la Cruz and Feria del Corpus Christi, two of the city's most popular celebrations, are both held in May, and travelers won't want to miss seeing Granada come alive with music, flamenco dancers and more. Save time during your trip for a guided tour of the Alhambra and strolling through the Albaicín neighborhood.

May falls within this Peruvian city's winter season, though you probably wouldn't notice thanks to its consistently mild temperatures (highs hover in the 60s). This month rarely sees rain showers, and you'll encounter fewer tourists at archaeological wonders like La Catedral – which sits in the restaurant- and coffee shop-filled Plaza de Armas – and Machu Picchu – a bucket list destination and UNESCO World Heritage Site located about 50 miles northwest of Cusco. If you're up for a challenge, hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. This difficult trek through the area's towering mountains takes about four days to complete.

With 33 beaches, this eastern Caribbean island is a sun worshipper's dream, and May temperatures in the upper 70s and 80s are perfect for basking on its white sands . Spend warm days venturing to offshore cays, exploring fishing villages and watching yacht races during the Anguilla Regatta, typically held every May. Since this is the start of the island's rainy season, the weather can be wetter and more humid than the winter months, but visitors will be rewarded with cheaper accommodations. 

May is a great time for a trip to this seaside Spanish city before the heat and humidity become unbearable. Can't-miss architectural marvels to check out include Antoni Gaudí's whimsical Park Güell and the Gothic-style Sagrada Família. Budget time for visiting some of Barcelona's highly regarded museums, such as the Picasso Museum, and relax at Barceloneta beach before stopping at a nearby seafood restaurant for some of the best paella in the city. What's more, the city plays host to a number of events come May, including film and music festivals

Craggy coastline views, a world-famous aquarium and a superb farm-to-table dining scene draw tourists of all types to Monterey, California. Though temperatures here remain in the 60s for most of the year, rainfall drops significantly in May. Popular festivals also make this a great time of the year to visit. Come early in the month for the Pacific Grove Good Old Days Street Festival, which showcases local artisans and craft vendors, plus a variety of food booths. And near the end of the month, the three-day California Roots Music & Arts Festival celebrates reggae artists.

Visit Laguna Beach for a perfect sunny-and-70, laid-back beach vacation. May is part of this Southern California town's spring shoulder season, so you'll find fewer people on popular stretches of sand like Main Beach and Crescent Bay Beach. Plus, the quieter month is ideal for relaxation-focused activities, such as outdoor yoga and hiking. When travelers need a break from reconnecting with themselves or nature, they can check out Laguna Beach's thriving art scene, which includes hundreds of galleries, studios and public works of art.

Bright turquoise water, gorgeous white sand and lush green vegetation await vacationers in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Composed of 32 islands and cays, this Caribbean archipelago is perfect for a tropical getaway. May falls between the country's peak winter season and its hurricane-prone low season, making it an ideal time for scuba diving and snorkeling in the Tobago Cays Marine Park, swimming and soaking up some rays at Canouan's beaches and hiking to beautiful waterfalls like Dark View Falls. Travelers will also want to check out the country's 20-acre Botanical Gardens, the oldest available in the Western Hemisphere.

Victoria, British Columbia's capital city, sits on the southern portion of Vancouver Island. Not only does this Canadian destination boast comfortable highs in the low 60s in May, it is just a short ferry ride from Seattle (less than three hours), making it perfect for a quick weekend getaway . Spend your visit strolling through the 55-acre Butchart Gardens, which are bursting with colorful tulips and cherry blossoms come May, then get out on the water on a whale watching tour. Before heading home, don't forget to shop for souvenirs along Government Street.

Considered the birthplace of democracy and drama, Athens boasts a historical legacy that is hard to top. The main reason to visit is to see the ancient city's impressive ruins, which you'll find at the Acropolis and Ancient Agora. For an additional look at Athens' past, check out the incredible Greek artifacts on display at the National Archaeological Museum and the Benaki Museum of Greek Culture. May vacations are especially enjoyable thanks to comfortable daytime temps hovering in the mid-70s.

By late May, most of Yellowstone's trails and must-see attractions are open, welcoming eager nature enthusiasts seeking a breath of fresh air. The average 50-degree temperatures provide a brisk but comfortable atmosphere for a hike on one of the Old Faithful area's trails or a kayaking excursion on Yellowstone Lake. For a glimpse of wildlife, head to Lamar Valley to view wolf pups emerging from their dens. Keep in mind that if you visit during Memorial Day weekend, you'll likely run into crowds.

With warm weather year-round (average temperatures sit in the 80s), there's never a bad time to visit Singapore. But in May, this Asian city-state on the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula welcomes events such as the Singapore Cocktail Festival, the Singapore International Festival of Arts and the Singapore HeritageFest. When you're not enjoying your time at one of Singapore's cultural events, check out top attractions like Gardens by the Bay, a futuristic nature park that is home to the Supertree Observatory and the Cloud Forest.

19 Awesome Places to Visit in May in the USA

With winter gone, longer days, and summer approaching, spring is the perfect time to explore diverse landscapes – warm weather without the crowds. Here are my favorite spots to discover this month…

1. Annapolis, Maryland

This quaint laid back gem always charms me! Located on Chesapeake Bay in Maryland (30 miles of Washington D.C.) I love the state’s easy-on-the-eye capital city for its well preserved colorful 18th-century buildings, its picturesque waterfront setting, its maritime charm and its laid back, friendly vibe! 

I especially love visiting this month when the temperatures are warm but not too intense, there’s fewer crowds than the summer and its the start of sailing season here, so lots of boat tours and regattas! 

There’s also great festivals taking place this month and I always enjoy May Day here and seeing the pretty flowers and decorations all over the city and also attending the vibrant First Sunday Arts Festivals , the fun Maryland Craft Beer Festival and the incredible Blue Angels air show over the Severn River! 

Then I always make time to explore the historic downtown with its cozy cafes, independent boutiques, lively pubs and farm-to-table eateries, visit the awesome Anne Arundel County Farmers Market and squeezing in a few waterfront restaurants – the views were gorgeous!

My highlights…

• Dining at the charming waterfront restaurant Pusser’s Caribbean Grille – I loved the dock views and the Olde English Fish and Chips! 
• Visiting the first nano brewery in Annapolis, Forward Brewing – I loved the trendy decor and gorging on the soft house made pretzels washed down with the Movin’ Cosmos craft beer!
• Going on a fun but spooky ghost pub crawl with Annapolis Ghost Tours – I loved the stories of the supposedly haunted Reynolds Tavern and McGarvey’s Saloon!

2. Block Island, Rhode Island

I think this New England island is hugely underrated, but that’s also what makes it so special! Located on the east coast 13 miles off the mainland it’s part of state of Rhode Island. It’s doesn’t receive as much attention or visitors as some of its rivals but that’s why I love it so much! 

It has a quaint, relaxed and uncommercialized vibe and the scenery feels more unspoiled and natural here. There’s superb coastal views, miles of sandy beaches, rugged cliffs, wildflower covered meadows and hills and two striking historic lighthouses. Accommodation ranges from boutique guesthouses and historic inns to seaside resorts and cottage rentals. 

Summer is much busier, so I always visit during this month to take advantage of great deals on accommodations. I love the more intimate local vibe, and it’s amazing to have the beautiful beaches and hiking trails almost all to myself! The temperatures are pleasant but it also can get a little chilly so I always pack for colder days too.

I really enjoyed exploring the long sandy beaches, Crescent Beach and Mohegan Bluffs, exploring the secluded Clayhead Nature Trail

• Discovering an array of awesome shops in the only town on the island New Shoreham, including art galleries, clothes stores, and boutiques – I loved the handcrafted jewelry at The Glass Onion boutique and the pottery and fine art at Jessie Edwards Studio.
• Hiring an e-bike from BI Electric Bike Rentals and exploring the island – taking photos of the lighthouses, the Great Salt Pond, and seeing incredible coastal views on Ocean Avenue and Corn Neck Road.
• Spotting migratory birds in the remote and tranquil Fresh Swamp Preserve.

3. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Although it’s large city, I love how “Philly” still manages to retain a small town, local feel! Located in southeastern part of Pennsylvania in the northeastern part of the country it’s filled with a mix of modern, shiny buildings, colonial architecture, fabulous green spaces and scenic waterfront views.

I personally prefer to visit this down-to-earth city in spring as it’s warm but not too hot, there’s fewer crowds (and so a more local vibe) and hotel rates are more reasonable. Also Spruce Street Harbor Park and beer gardens start opening up, and the city has a real buzz about the place in spring, as if it’s awakening from a slumber!

With spring comes the events too and there are plenty of food fetes, blooming tulips, sporting events, and even park parties to get involved with. My favorite festivals are the Philadelphia Beer Week , the vibrant Rittenhouse Row Spring Festival and the fun South Street Spring Festival.

On my trip I loved exploring the historic landmarks Franklin Square, Liberty Bell, and Independence Hall and discovering the hip neighborhoods Fishtown and Rittenhouse Square for eclectic shopping, cool bars, and trendy eateries!

• Staying in a suite at the gorgeous boutique the Lokal Hotel – I loved the boho-chic decor, the intimate vibe and the remote invisible service! 
• Spending an evening at the Assembly Rooftop Lounge – I loved the incredible city views, the trendy design and the rotating frozen cocktails!
• Going on the cool Philly by Night Tour – seeing the illuminated Philadelphia Museum of Art and Boathouse Row was an incredible experience!

4. Ocean City, Maryland

This easy-going beach resort filled with vintage-style charm, is a great choice for families! Located on the east coast in Maryland (140 miles south of Philadelphia), I love this spot for its long, wide beaches filled with golden sand, its three – mile boardwalk, its fun amusement parks and its iconic pier. 

I visit during this month because it’s warm but not too hot, and it’s before the summer crowds arrive so the accommodation from beachfront hotels to condo rentals – is cheaper. 

It’s a little too chilly to swim comfortably, but it’s warm enough to laze on the beach, go jet skiing, kayaking and paddleboarding and try parasailing.

I loved going on a dolphin watching cruise, visiting the wild ponies on nearby Assateague Island (I could easily drive there) and checking out the live music and fun stalls at Springfest (which takes places at the beginning of the month every year).

• Checking out the Jolly Roger Amusement Park – I loved the Ferris Wheel, carnival games and nostalgic boardwalk vibe! 
• Discovering the scenic Northside Park which is one of the most picturesque green spaces in the city, I loved the Assawoman Bay views and the biking on the paved trails.

5. Edisto Island, South Carolina

I love this unique hidden gem! Located in South Carolina between Charleston and Beaufort, it’s an uncrowded, unspoilt and uncommercialized island destination where I go when I want a relaxed, low-key break. Accommodation here is also kept low key and ranges from cottage vacation rentals and beach houses to bed & breakfasts and campgrounds.

The scenery has a wilder feel here, with pristine sandy beaches, oak trees draped in Spanish moss , marshlands and blanched driftwood trees scattered along the shoreline.

I prefer to visit during this month because the temperatures are pleasant, there’s less humidity and fewer tourists than the summer months and it’s also the start of the loggerhead sea turtle nesting season – it was fun watching the nesting areas!

I also enjoyed relaxing on Edisto Beach, learning about the island at the Edisto Island Historic Preservation Museum and exploring the breathtaking Botany Bay Plantation Heritage Preserve and Wildlife Management Area which included a small beach where turtles nest and where I could spot playful dolphins!

My personal highlights…

• Kayaking through the extraordinary marshes and tidal creeks and going on a guided eco-tour down the tranquil Edisto River.
• Camping overnight at the Oceanfront Campground – I loved waking up to the beautiful beach and ocean views!

6. S acramento, California 

I love this vibrant but laid-back city! I’m always charmed by its incredible farmer’s markets, thriving farm-to-table dining scene, quirky shops, walkable neighborhoods and scenic historic district filled with well-preserved 19th century buildings. 

I prefer to visit during this month as the temperatures are just right, it’s before the summer crowds and peak-season accommodation price rises and the city seems to come alive!

Flowers are blooming in the gardens and parks, and there’s events galore. My personal favorites are the lively Sacramento Music Festival, the fun Cinco de Mayo Festival and the foodie-focused Farm-to-Fork Spring Farmers’ Market.

On my trip I loved exploring the historic Old Town District, taking a tour of the State Capitol Museum , paddling in the American River, and cruising the Sacramento River. The city is also home to a fabulous collection of boutique hotels and historic inns.

My favorite highlights…

• Dining at the legendary farm-to-table Mulvaney’s B&L which is housed in converted firehouse and has a charming garden patio. I can recommend the divine Bella Rosa Potato Gratin! 
• Seeing amazing art at Crocker Art Museum , which is the oldest art museum in the Western United States. I was a huge fan of the Victorian-era mansion it was housed in! 
• Going on a sunset river cruise with Hornblower Cruises – I loved seeing the Tower Bridge, Delta King riverboat, and the Sacramento skyline from the water.

7. Bend, Oregon

This is a cool city perfect for outdoor lovers! Located on the edge of the Cascade Mountain Range in central Oregon (160 miles from Portland) I’m a huge fan of its foodie and craft beer scene, its friendly but adventurous spirit and its beautiful natural surroundings. 

I always visit during the spring because the temperatures and lower humidity are perfect for longer hikes, the wildflowers are blooming, the bird and wildlife is more active and there’s less crowds and better rates on accommodation than the summer. Accommodation ranges from upscale resorts and boutique hotels to camping and cabin rentals.

I always find its warm enough to get involved with most of the activities on offer here including exploring the mountain biking trails, kayaking, paddleboarding, floating down the Deschutes River (the rivers are fast flowing from the melted snow during the spring here!), rock climbing, caving, lava tube exploring, playing golf. 

I especially loved exploring the many hiking trails – the breathtaking Misery Ridge Trail the scenic Deschutes River Trails, and the picturesque Tumalo Falls Trail that leads to a stunning 97-foot waterfall were my favorites!

• Visiting the hipster-friendly Crux Fermentation Project Craft Brewery. I can recommend the Japanese rice lager Bochi Bochi! 
• Hiking the nearby Oregon Badlands Wilderness Area which was filled with breathtaking Instagram-worthy castle-like rock formations and juniper trees! 
• Taking a trip to Newberry National Volcanic Monument and viewing the wonderful rock formations created from previous eruptions. I especially loved the striking Lava Butte! 

8. Texas Hill Country

I think this area is an underrated gem! Located in Central Texas, between Austin and San Antonio, it’s filled with rolling hills, picturesque small towns, and historical attractions,

Texas Hill Country is packed with rich history and culture and filled with scenic rivers, lovely lakes, rugged terrain, and beautiful flora. There are plenty of outdoor adventures here, from hiking to wildlife spotting.

Temperatures warm the state in the shoulder season from late March to this month, with warm sunshine and an average of 30 degrees during spring.

I highly recommend not missing the Kerrville Folk Festival or, if you arrive early enough, the Strawberry Festival, hiking, biking, floating, or soaking in the warm Texas sunshine before the searing summers start!

• Visiting the magical enchanted rock formed from pink granite (one of the largest in the country).
• Discovering what is in the Cave Without a Name – a unique spot 80 feet below the ground.
• Stopping at the many quirky roadside attractions!

9. Savannah, Georgia

If you venture south, I highly suggest visiting Savannah, filled with beautiful architecture, flowering streets, and blooming azaleas.

Savannah’s subtropical climate makes for a pleasantly warm spring. There are also fewer crowds, lower prices, and lively events. I personally think March to June and mid- September to mid- November are the best times to visit this picturesque city.

I highly recommend exploring the city on foot and visiting the nearby seafront town of Charleston.

• Strolling around the cute independent boutiques.
• Riding around the beautiful Forsyth Park on a bike and then stopping off for a picnic surrounded by the stunning greenery.
• Chilling out on the beach on nearby Tybee Island.

10. Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

Renowned for its natural beauty and Civil War history, Shenandoah National Park offers a unique backcountry experience with an accessible location.

Whether you want to chill or indulge in outdoor activities, I love that this park has everything! Wildlife to spot here includes beautiful black bears, coyotes, white-tailed deer, big brown bats, bobcats, and spotted skunks, but I suggest being a bit careful when trying to spot them!

Surprisingly, the park is sleepy during spring, with wildflowers popping and blooming azaleas and cool temperatures away from the crowds. April and this month are the best times for hiking, bird watching, and star-gazing.

The snow is almost melting, temperatures are relatively warm, campgrounds are open, and you can explore the park in early spring without waiting in traffic lines.

• Exploring the 105-mile Skyline Drive filled with scenic overlooks and Insta-worthy viewpoints.
• Hiking to the tallest waterfall in the park via Dark Hallow Falls trail (one of the most popular routes to take).
• Renting an E-bike and stopping off at a wine-tasting tour.

11. Monterey, California

Brimming with beaches, coastal terrain, historic sites, and stunning scenery, the quaint and beautiful city of Monterey is filled with diverse marine ecosystems.

In my opinion, the best time to explore Monterey is between April and this month when temperatures average around 19 degrees, and there are far fewer crowds to contend with!

With warmer temperatures, blossoming flowers, and moderate weather (with occasional rain), spring here has fewer crowds and eclectic food festivals.

I would suggest experiencing the magic by dining in its former warehouses turned resturants, visiting its iconic museums, exploring its captivating bay, and getting involved in its fun food festivals, including the Pebble Beach Food and Wine and the Artichoke Festival in Castroville.

• Walking along the 18-mile Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail, which features beautiful views and flowers.
• Taking a guided tour around the fascinating historic buildings at the state park.
• Checking out the wonderful collection of art and exhibits at The Monterey Museum of Art .

12. Yosemite National Park, California

I love Yosemite National Park! I love its beautiful waterfalls, towering granite monoliths, deep valleys, giant sequoia groves and panoramic views. When I visited, I couldn’t quite believe it existed; yes, it is that special!

As well as being a mecca for daredevil rock climbers and nature lovers, the stunningly rugged landscape comes alive in spring when the waterfalls are at their peak, wildflowers are in bloom, and the temperatures are very pleasant (although nights can be chilly).

Early spring marks the opening of the iconic Tioga Pass, a scenic drive across the mountains and into the high country.

I highly recommend heading to the Cook’s Meadow Loop or Wawona Meadow Loop and watching the bright colors peek out of the snow.

• Hiring a bike from Yosemite Valley Lodge, cycling around the area and discovering scenic landscapes.
• Stopping at Tunnel View on State Highway 41 to see the picturesque and spectacular El Capitan, Bridalviel Falls, and Half Dome.
• Taking a trip to the iconic Yosemite Falls which is flowing at its highest point during this month.

13. Austin, Texas

Austin experiences a high season twice a year, mainly during spring and fall when the temperatures are perfect (around 30 degrees). Though you’ll encounter some of the biggest crowds, Austin is affordable even during the busiest seasons.

While the weather is pleasantly mild with some moisture, gorgeous blooms can be seen throughout the region. Known for its sunny days and outdoor activities, I personally think this month is an ideal time to visit before the soaring Texan summer becomes barely tolerable!

14. Wolfeboro, New Hampshire

Known as “The Oldest Summer Resort in America,” I personally think this pretty town in Carroll County, New Hampshire, is a fabulous destination for a weekend trip or spring break.

The temperatures in spring average around 19 degrees, so expect a pleasantly warm spring break without too much heat (and without the summer crowds)!

The town is nestled on the eastern shore of Lake Winnipesaukee and is surrounded by unspoiled forests and mountains. Plenty of shopping, dining, entertainment, and other activities and attractions await.

I highly recommend visiting the Allen Albee Beach, the Wright Museum of WWII , the Cotton Valley Rail Trail, and the New Hampshire Boat Museum .

15. Port Aransas, Texas

This is a busy tourist spot in Texas, but it’s popular for a reason – I personally think the beaches here are really beautiful.

Located on the Texas Coast on Mustang Island in the balmy Gulf of Mexico, there is also a great range of things to do here.

My favorite highlights include Roberts Point Park, where an observation tower offers beautiful bay views and dolphin sightings, and Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center which has a fantastic boardwalk crossing alligator-inhabited wetlands.

Boats also run from Fisherman’s Wharf to secluded San José Island. Temperatures average around 28 degrees this month, so enjoy your warm beach destination!

16. Atlanta, Georgia

This fun city has world-class attractions, gorgeous parks, and shopping districts. It is a great year-round travel destination with a moderate subtropical climate.

I’d recommend a visit from either March to this month or from September to November , when average temperatures are around 27 degrees.

Witness the green spaces come alive with musical concerts in full swing in the spring with pleasant weather, moderate prices, and memorable events.

I recommend attending the Jazz Festival, exploring downtown, or planning a day trip to the nearby Georgia mountains; it’s a great time to head outdoors and enjoy a picnic in a shaded park!

17. Sanibel Island, Florida

This gorgeous island is located in southwest Florida along the Gulf of Mexico. Temperatures this month average around 32 degrees, so I recommend it if you’re looking for a hot vacation around this time of year.

It’s famous for its sunsets, lighthouses, and luxurious resorts, and I highly recommend just strolling around the beautiful beaches, which are filled with pretty shells.

I recommend visiting Lighthouse Beach, which has a fishing pier, The Causeway Beaches for water sports, the striking 19th-century Sanibel Lighthouse, the charming boardwalk that winds itself through marshes, and J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge , which covers about half of the island.

18. Monument Valley, Arizona

Part of the Colorado Plateau, America’s enigmatic landscape, Monument Valley is nature’s wonderland full of spires, buttes, red rock creations, and a stunning desert-like landscape.

I love the unique – and very Instagrammable – landscapes and the endless hiking trails they have here. It’s also a very popular spot to go rock climbing.

Clear skies, warm weather, and cool nights make spring one of the most delightful seasons from March to late this month.

In my opinion, the warm and pleasant daytime temperatures, stable weather, and fewer crowds make this a fantastic spring break destination.

19. Las Vegas

Often referred to as the ‘Entertainment Capital of the World’, Las Vegas is the ultimate playground of adventures, cuisines, and nightlife scenes, and when you visit, you’ll see why!

While the Sin City sees an influx of visitors during winters and scorching summers, I honestly think the best time to visit the city is from March to this month and from September to November .

It’s still one of the warmest states to visit this month, but temperatures are much more manageable and hover around 32 degrees during the day.

You’ll find various events, hot (but not unbearable) daily temperatures, and fewer crowds. Nearby the city is the Grand Canyon, and I highly suggest a visit here—it’s a one-in-a-lifetime experience!

Spring and fall make for an ideal trip to the canyon for hiking, skywalking, and discovering the wildflower blooms, but I would also highly recommend just enjoying the scenic vistas.

What a great list of places to visit in the USA in the Spring. Arches National Park is one of my favorites. In addition to Arches, the nearby city of Moab is a fun place to add to your trip. We actually plan to visit both Arches and Moab this May as a family.

Napa Valley and Yosemite have always been a charm for me. I will visit these two places definitely after covid as it is my dream to go there and stay inside the national park. Thanks for the wonderful information.

This national park in Wyoming is a popular destination during May when most trails and facilities are open and available to enjoy.

This is especially true during Memorial Day weekend. Marking the start of beach season in the city, you’ll find plenty of locals and tourists heading to nearby beaches in late May. Maybe the April showers deterred you from traveling, but the promise of May flowers may be the inspiration you need. Like April, May is the shoulder season for many destinations that get a big rush of tourism in the summer months. That means you’ll be able to enjoy warmer temps and (hopefully) smaller crowds.

Here are my best picks for where to travel in the USA this May:

1. Kauai, Hawai’i

As the Hawaiian Islands transition from spring to summer, temperatures increase on Kauai during the month of May but remain relatively mild. Picture opening the windows in your seaside bungalow to let the salty breeze in during the day, keeping a fan going to keep cool at night. Kauai sees less rain in May than March and April, making for sunny days perfect for hiking, sailing, hitting the beach, and all the other exciting outdoors activities on the island.

May marks the beginning of cruise season in Alaska. If you didn’t know that was a thing, neither did I! This is the time when the ice melts just enough for cruise ships to pass through their chosen routes, and if you want first dibs, book your Alaskan cruise in May.

Alaskan cruises are ideal for travelers who don’t necessarily identify as “cruise people,” as this is far from your typical experience. In Alaska, it’s less about hopping off the ship to explore a beach town, and more about taking things slow, catching glimpses of wildlife, and admiring the glacial landscapes you’ll find along the way. In May you can expect to experience some of San Francisco’s best weather of the year. Sunny days with temperatures around the mid-60s make it just the right time to explore this hip and colorful city. Bring some layers to cozy up during chilly nights, though.

You’ll see flowers in bloom throughout town, which will add a dash of whimsy to your trip. May is also an exciting month for festival lovers, as Carnaval in the Mission District falls on Memorial Day weekend, celebrating the city’s rich Latin American and Caribbean culture.

4. Big Sur, California

The stretch of two-lane highway that winds along the rugged Cali coast between Carmel and San Simeon is what we know as the Big Sur area, and it offers some stunning views of the ocean, like the one at McWay Falls. Vegas, baby! This glittery city gets quite hot in the summertime, so it’s best to check it out in May, before the heat becomes unbearable. You get the best of both worlds here: a bustling city full of lights and entertainment, and natural areas with great expanses of desert as far as the eye can see. It can be your base for visiting Zion National Park , the Grand Canyon, or nearby Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area.

If you’re up for it this May, consider road-tripping from Las Vegas to Reno for an unforgettable adventure full of quirky stops.

6. Canyonlands National Park, Utah

It’s no secret that we think Utah is one of the most beautiful states in the US , so why not make it your chosen May destination?

Awe-inspiring landscapes make Canyonlands National Park one of the best places to bask in the state’s beauty. May is a popular time to visit, because of the relatively mild temperatures (around 80 degrees during the day) which shoot up in the summer months, making it less than ideal for hiking. This month, though, you’ll be able to enjoy warm and sunny days without being overwhelmed by the heat.

You can indeed hike or drive through Canyonlands National Park to see its vast natural beauty, but you can also fly over it and see the incredible rock formations from above. Add Canyonlands to your Utah national parks road trip itinerary this May — you won’t be disappointed!

7. Havasu Falls, Arizona

There’s no wonder why Havasu Falls is at the top of our list of the most beautiful waterfalls in Arizona . Hiking there on the Havasupai Reservation is ideal in May, because it is warm enough to swim in the pools, it hasn’t gotten totally buggy yet, and you’ll visit just before peak season (it’s interesting that monsoon season (late June-August) is the most popular for permits, because you would think that the high temperatures and even higher chance of rain should be deterrents).

8. White Sands National Park, New Mexico

Sure, White Sands National Park might be in the middle of nowhere in New Mexico. Don’t let that deter you from visiting, though! This is one of the most magical places you can find in the US, hands down. It’s usually very uncrowded.

Since it’s so far off the beaten path, make sure to bring plenty of food and water with you. The sun can be quite harsh, especially in May, so bring sunscreen and a hat too, to shield you from those glaring rays.

What makes this place extra special in May is the abundance of purple sand verbena blooms that you’ll find scattered through the soft white sand. These flowers smell a lot like gardenias and were used by native people as a mild sedative for years.

9. Black Canyon at Gunnison National Park, Colorado

Beginning in May, both parts (the north and south rims) of Black Canyon in Gunnison National Park are open to enjoy. Like many other places on this list, this part of Colorado has the perfect hiking weather this month: just warm enough to bask in the sun, but not nearly as hot as the summer months.

A huge plus for Black Canyon is that it never gets too crowded, like some other national parks. You might be surprised that all this natural beauty hasn’t been hyped as much, especially when you see the black cliffs from above at Chasm View! This national park is an awesome place to go rock climbing, kayaking, and rafting. You can also camp at one of two campgrounds in the park.

10. San Antonio, Texas

You’ve heard about the Texas heat, so I’ll spare you the details of my sticky summers spent there. Sure, May temperatures are high in San Antonio, but it’s much more breezy and less humid compared to the summer months, making it a great time to visit.

Stroll along the San Antonio Riverwalk, or tour the historic Spanish Missions UNESCO World Heritage site. Don’t skip out on the amazing Mexican food either, because San Antonio is known for having the best tacos in the country (don’t come at me, LA folks!).

11. New Orleans, Louisiana

There’s a reason why New Orleans makes our list of the best places to visit in spring in the USA . Especially in May, New Orleans is bursting with color from flowers in bloom throughout the city’s parks. Plus, May isn’t nearly as humid as June through August, and temps peak in the low 80s. It’s an ideal time for getting out on the town and exploring by foot or taking a carriage ride through the French Quarter.

12. Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota

While some Southern states are in full summer mode, with warm temps and sunny days, Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota is just finishing its springtime thaw. May is a fantastic time to check out this Midwestern gem. Highs are around 70 degrees during the day, the warmest of the year so far. Winters are frigid in the Midwest, so Milwaukee residents get excited about sunny May days, as summer is just around the corner. Farmers markets around town, like the New Berlin Farmers Market, start to open in May, and it’s also a great time to rent a bike and explore on two wheels (make sure to ride along the lakeshore).

Must-do outdoor activities include the Forbidden Caverns, the swinging Bridge to Prosperity, and the mountain coasters!

If you can sneak a trip in May before the crowds start flowing in June, the weather will be in the low 70s, making it a great time to visit Tennessee . Hiking the mountains and visiting paved cities are also always a bit more pleasant when the temperature isn’t scorching hot. As with the rest of the country, flowers are in full bloom!

17. Key West, Florida

If you have been waiting for a glorious beach destination to travel to in May, this might be it! Key West gets its first taste of summer heat toward the end of the month, along with a higher chance of rain as May progresses. However, early May promises highs in the upper 70s and low humidity, making it perfect beach weather.

Myrtle Beach is one of the most quintessential East Coast beach towns in the US, and May is a wonderful time to visit. It’s warm enough to enjoy the beach, but the summer crowds haven’t begun yet. You’ll enjoy cheaper accommodation up until Memorial Day weekend, too.

Festivals are in full swing in May, including the World Famous Blue Crab Festival , which is one of the largest festivals in the Southeast. Get your beach hat and favorite swimsuit ready, because Myrtle Beach is calling you this May.

21. Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville has the perfect mix of outdoorsy grit and the charm of a small Southern city. As one of the best cities in the US for budget travelers , this one is great if you want to stretch your dollar. It’s an artsy place with a quirky atmosphere that makes it stand out from other cities in the South.

May is the ideal time to head to Asheville because it and surrounding mountains are in full bloom, and the mild warmth is just right for a hike on one of the many trails nearby. Another huge plus is that the farmers markets are open and offer local produce, which you’ll also enjoy at Asheville’s restaurants.

22. Virginia Beach, Virginia

Virginia Beach comes alive in May, as the seaside city kicks off its epic festival season with the Atlantic Coast Kite Festival and Neptune Spring Wine & Food Festival at the beginning of the month. You can also catch the Pungo Strawberry Festival at the end of the month. I mean, what more do you need?

May is the ideal time to visit Virginia Beach, because, like other beach destinations, summer isn’t quite in full swing yet and you’ll get a head-start on the season. 23. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

May is a great time to explore historic Philly, as it is just starting to warm up and it isn’t full-blown tourist season yet. You’ll be able to enjoy the city on foot, taking in the sights and smells of the quintessential Philly food trucks without having to fight the crowds.

Although May yields about 10 days of rain on average, you won’t have to worry about getting soaked, because there are so many things to do indoors, like checking out the incredible museums. If you do get lucky with sunny skies, don’t miss out on Philly’s art scene on this walking tour .

24. New York City, New York

Last but certainly not least on this list is larger-than-life NYC, which is absolutely stunning in the late spring and early summer. That’s why May is the best time to visit. Now that the trees are green again, you’ll love strolling through Central Park, seeing all the people hanging out and having picnics. You’ll also see tulips and other flowers in full bloom at parks throughout town.

There’s always something happening in New York at any given time of the year, including plenty of free things to do . I also recommend hitting up the colorful and flavorful Bronx Night Market , which starts its summer season before the beginning of May.

There’s enough variety in this list to give anyone decision anxiety, but I can’t think of a better problem to have than to be able to choose from among these destinations for a trip in May.

I like the variety of places you suggested here! And we are going to Myrtle Beach in May! Our first trip in a couple years. Your recommendation was perfect as we chose May due to the milder temperatures (and comfortable water, it can actually get too warm in a way in late summer), less crowds (after the golf crowd, before school goes out for the year if you go in early May), and good deals. You did your research regarding the weather! Great job as always!

The sun shines warmly and the days are long and lovely. In the south, it has already started to heat up and May is likely the last time you can take a holiday in the US without suffering the staggering heat of the summer sun. May is still shoulder season and you should be able to find flight and hotel deals. In addition, the crowds haven’t yet arrived. You still have a few weeks to enjoy many amazing popular destinations in America without jostling for space. So, where should you go? I have asked some amazing travel bloggers for their recommendations for the best American destinations for a May trip. Below you will see what makes each  destination  a fantastic place for a May vacation and what weather you can expect. If there are annual festivals or events that make it an even better place to visit in May, then those are mentioned as well. In addition, if someone stayed or knows of an incredible hotel, that has been included.

Joshua Tree National Park, California

Joshua Tree National Park in Southern California is an incredible destination to visit in the United States during the month of May. With the hot desert climate, summer can be pretty brutal for outdoor activities. Visiting in May will offer cooler temperatures, making both hiking and camping much more enjoyable and comfortable. Not to mention, the crowds will be more tolerable in comparison to the fall. 

Joshua Tree National Park is the kind of place that you need to see to believe. The alien-like terrain and quiet solitude of the desert make this a wonderful place to unwind. The Park encompasses both the Mojave Desert and Colorado Desert, meaning you will see two very different landscapes as you drive the main stretch. The close proximity of the two means that you can hike two deserts in a  one day trip to Joshua Tree . 

The Mojave Desert, in the northern half of the park, is home to the famous Joshua Tree – a tall and wild yucca plant – as well as the giant boulders popular with climbers and photographers. The majority of the Park’s hiking trails are found in this region.  

The southern half sits in the Colorado Desert region, which is hotter and drier – too hot for the Joshua Tree but perfect for the many cholla and ocotillo cacti. This area holds more untouched wilderness for you to explore. 

There is a lot to see within the park. For example, take a hike on the Fortynine Palms Oasis Trail, found in the Mojave portion of the park. This trail is a moderate 3 mile walk over rocky peaks covered with cacti. Ultimately, the trail leads to a natural oasis. It’s a surreal experience, very peaceful and comfortable in the late spring temperatures.  

Average high temperatures in May is 85°F with no rain or humidity.

Joshua Tree is roughly 2.5 hours outside of Los Angeles.

Chicago, Illnois

Chicago is one of the best places to visit in the USA in May. Tourist crowds are lower in the spring so visitors can enjoy sightseeing without the long lines that will be present at attractions in June through August. It is also when the city starts to come alive again after a long winter. Restaurants open their outdoor dining spaces, the Navy Pier Fireworks resume, and street festival season begins.

From May to November, Navy Pier shoots off a spectacular fireworks’ displays twice a week over Lake Michigan. The time changes depending on sunset. However, each Wednesday and Saturday locals and visitors alike can show up and enjoy this free show at one of Chicago’s premier tourist spots.

Generally, the month of May sees at least 20 street festivals in Chicago throughout the month. Each has a different theme and is in a different Chicago neighborhood. The most popular festivals in May are the Belmont-Sheffield Music Fest in Lakeview, Mayfest in Lincoln Park, Randolph Street Market Fest in the West Loop, and the Chicago Beer Classic at Soldier Field. Generally, Chicago street festivals are an excellent way to hear amazing new musical talent. Famous bands have also been known to headline the Saturday night stages from time to time.

To take advantage of May outdoor dining in Chicago, pick a place with great views of the city.  Breakfast at Lou Mitchell’s  while overlooking the Willis Tower is very popular. Visitors can easily walk to the Tower’s Skydeck for 360 views of the city and lake after eating.

Temperatures generally range from 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit in May. There are some rainy days but generally, the days are fairly sunny.

One unusual benefit of traveling to Chicago is it has two international airports. Both are connected by public transit to the downtown area.

Visitors flying into O’Hare airport can take the Blue Line to the Loop while those arriving at Midway airport can take the Orange Line. Avoid renting a car and driving. Parking is a fortune in Chicago.

Brodi says, “The Hampton Inn is a budget-friendly hotel in Chicago’s Theater District. This area is centrally located to most tourist attractions. Public transit is also located right nearby, to save visitors on overpriced cabs or rideshares. It’s also only a 10-15 minute walk from the Willis Tower and Lou Mitchell’s.”

Zion National Park, Utah

Zion National Park is one of Utah’s ‘Big Five’ national parks and is one of the best destinations to visit in the USA for May holiday when days are cool and ideal for hiking. In addition to great weather, Zion is a lot less crowded in May than during the busy summer months, so you won’t have to wait too long for the shuttle or to get on popular trails like Angel’s Landing. 

Zion National Park has two sections, but by far the most popular section is Zion Canyon. Unlike many other canyons, the main access is not along the rim, but along the bottom of the canyon. 

Zion is a hiker’s paradise, but if you don’t like to hike and just want to enjoy the scenery, you can take a free shuttle the length of the canyon from Springdale to the end. In addition, there is an easy, flat one-mile walk on Riverside Walk that has lovely views.  

The end of this trail is also the start of one of the most famous hikes in the country, The Narrows. This fun hike actually involves hiking IN a river. The river passes through steep walls of a narrow slot canyon and is a unique – and breathtaking – experience.

The other most super famous hike in the park is Angel’s Landing. This is not for those with a fear of heights, as it has some narrow sections with steep drop offs on both sides (but with a chain to hold on to!!). If you dare, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of Zion Canyon at the top.

In addition to hiking, Zion is a great place to try canyoneering. There are plenty of narrow slot canyons in and around the park, and rappelling down 100-foot cliffs is a fantastic experience if you’re up for the adventure!

If you prefer more horizontal activities, rent a bike in Springdale and cycle through the canyon. The Pa’rus Trail is designed for cycling. You can cycle the entire canyon and skip the shuttle, too.

In May, the average high is 82°F and average low is 53°F with practically no rain or humidity.

The easiest way to get to Zion National Park is to fly into Las Vegas . It is less than a three-hour drive to Springdale, the main gateway town to Zion. Springdale is right outside the main entrance, and there is a free shuttle from the town into the park, so it couldn’t be more convenient. 

James says, “A great place to stay in Springdale is Red Rock Inn. They have cute cottages with views of the mountains. There’s even a hot tub to relax in after a day on the trails.”

Oahu, Hawaii

If you are looking for one of the best places for a May trip in the USA, Oahu, or more specifically, Haleiwa on the North Shore of Oahu, is a great place to start.

In springtime, Haleiwa Beach Park offers visitors an uncrowded beach with lots of surfing and swimming opportunities. In addition, Haleiwa Town features unique shops, restaurants, galleries, and historical landmarks.

May is a great time to visit. It is right before the height of the tourist season. You will get the best weather and lower hotel and airfare rates before the summer price hikes. Beat the throngs of tourists to the sandy beaches and warm, blue Pacific water.

May in Hawaii brings the statewide cultural celebration of Lei day . Lei day is held annually on May first and holds cultural significance to the Hawaiian people. Leis are worn and sold to honor ancestors, loved ones and to celebrate the spirit of Aloha. In Haleiwa, you will find Lei vendors all over town.

In addition to Haleiwa Beach Park, Haleiwa is home to many beautiful beaches for swimming and surfing, such as Waimea Bay, Queens Bath, Pipeline, Sharks Cove, and Sunset Beach. When not swimming and surfing, you can snorkel, fish, boat, and hike.

Be sure to check out Laniakea Beach, better known as turtle beach. Spend time watching sea turtles bask on the sand or swim nearby on this cozy little piece of paradise. Let the turtle guardians teach you about these wonderful creatures while you get up close and share their sanctuary. Take a picnic and have a nice day out with your family .

Another great activity is paddle boarding under the Rainbow Bridge. The water is beautiful and serene under the bridge, and you may even see some wildlife.

The weather in May is usually sunny, with temperatures between 72 °F and 84 °F. Expect very little rain and around 13 days of humidity. Bring lots of sunscreen!

The nearest airport is Honolulu International Airport which is located approximately 45 miles away. You will need to rent a car to explore Haleiwa.

New York City, New York

New York City is one of the best cities to visit in the USA in spring because the sunny but mild weather makes it easy to experience the best of this exciting metropolis.   

If you do a  walking tour of Manhattan , you’ll see many of the famous neighbourhoods and iconic landmarks, like Greenwich Village, the Flatiron Building, The Empire State Building and the New York Public Library.

Of course, you’ll want to get somewhere high for a look at the famous New York skyline – and in May, you have a great chance of clear views. A classic choice is to go to the observation deck on the Empire State Building, but the Top of the Rock observation deck has something better: a view of the Empire State Building itself.

If you like drinks with your views, consider one of the many rooftop bars in New York – for example, Westlight in Brooklyn offers exquisite tapas and cocktails with its panoramic views of Manhattan.

A trip to New York isn’t complete without eating some good food. For an old school pizza, try Lombardi’s on Spring Street. A good choice for steak is Keens Steakhouse. In addition, if you want something a little fancier, Jean-Georges at 1 Central Park West has exquisite tasting menus (and the tuna sashimi ribbons are incredible).

With daytime highs of 71°F (or 20°C), the weather is bright and warm but not too hot. This makes May perfect for picnicking in one of the many city parks. For example, Central Park will be decked out in its most vibrant green finery. 

To get to New York, you have several airports to choose from: La Guardia (30 mins to Manhattan by car) Newark (40 mins) and JFK (45 mins), with lots of public transportation options.

Martha says, “There are plenty of Airbnb available in New York, but a good budget hotel choice could be the Chelsea inn, which is close to both Chelsea and the Flatiron district.”

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Colorado

The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is a stunning and uncrowded gem in the state of Colorado. It is deep, steep, narrow, and the views from the top are impressive and terrifying. It’s worth putting on your bucket list and a fantastic destination for a May road trip through Colorado.

The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park was named for its cliffs that are often dark from shadows, making the walls appear black. The canyon itself is so vertical that the Gunnison River drops an average of 43 feet per mile, and 240 feet per mile at its steepest point at Chasm View. They are some of the steepest mountain descents in North America.

Like the Grand Canyon in Arizona, the Black Canyon of the Gunnison is made up of two parts: the South Rim and North Rim. May is one of the best months to visit the park as both sides are open to visitors. The North Rim is closed from mid-October to mid-April.

Weather in May is perfect for visiting, hiking, and camping. The heat starts in June, so May is the best time to visit. The best vantage points for photos as you drive the North Rim are The Narrows, Kneeling Camel View, and Balanced Rock. The most spectacular hike is Exclamation Point.

On the drive to the South Rim, do not miss Gunnison Point, Chasm View, Painted Wall, and Dragon Point. The Rim Rock Nature Trail and Cedar Point Nature Trail are some of the best hikes on the South Rim. For adventurous and experienced hikers, there is the option of making the steep descent to the bottom of the canyon or rafting on the Gunnison River.

The average high temperature in May is 73 F and the average low is 45 F. Days are sunny, skies are clear and visibility is excellent.

The difference in elevation between the canyon rim and the Gunnison River is considerable, resulting in a significant temperature difference. So it’s worth packing warm clothes. It can also be a bit windy at the canyon rim.

The nearest international airport is in Denver (DEN), 265 miles away and about a 5-hour drive. Another is Grand Junction Regional Airport, only 60 miles, and an hour’s drive away.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is one of the best places for a May getaway in the USA. You can sunbathe, beach comb, enjoy nightlife, do family friendly activities, eat delicious seafood, and experience the natural beauty of South Carolina.

In addition, the weather is fantastic and the ocean water almost feels like a warm bath. It is also outside peak tourist season, so you will be able to enjoy the natural beauty and fun filled activities Myrtle Beach has to offer without the summer crowds.

When visiting Myrtle Beach, one of the first things you will want to do is to head to the beach. Depending on where you are staying, you have a good chance of being within walking distance of one of the many great beaches. Spend a day relaxing, building sandcastles, and soaking up the sun.

If you are a nature lover, head over to  Brookgreen Gardens , where you can walk through 9,100 acres of blooming, colorful flowers and walk under moss draped trees. If visiting with kids, they will love the mini zoo and story book play area.

Broadway at the Beach is another thing you won’t want to miss. Here you will find plenty of local shopping options, dining options, and fun activities. Some that you won’t want to miss are the jet boat rides, ziplining, the Pavilion Park amusement park, Wonderworks, and the Ripley’s Aquarium.

In May, you will find gorgeous weather, with the average about 78 degrees and ocean water reaching 70 degrees. You will get around 3″ of rain and about 13 days of humidity.

Myrtle Beach International Airport is conveniently located just three miles outside of downtown. From the airport you can rent a car, catch a cab, rideshare, public bus, or depending on where you are staying a free hotel shuttle. If driving, you will be in downtown Myrtle Beach within 10 minutes.

Melissa says, “For accommodations , consider Paradise Resort, located just 7 minutes from the airport. The resort features a lazy river, two hot tubs, a kiddie pool, and two regular sized pools. The resort also has onsite dining and gorgeous balcony rooms with ocean views. The best part is its proximity to the ocean, with less than a 3-minute walk to reach the beach.”

G rand Canyon, Arizona

The Grand Canyon is an amazing destination where you can witness the beauty and power of nature on a grand scale. One of the seven natural wonders of the world,  visiting the Grand Canyon  will leave you in awe with its overall size and scale, combined with the breathtaking landscape. It is one of the best national parks to visit in the USA in spring.

Do not miss spending a day driving along the South Rim. It is 25 miles of scenic views and takes around 4 hours to complete, if you stop to enjoy the breathtaking landscape and outlooks. Navajo Point is the highest point of elevation on the South Rim and has some fabulous panoramic views.

Get deeper into the Canyon by going on day-long and multiple-day hikes. One of the easier and shorter trails within the park is the Kaibab Trail to Cedar Ridge (3 miles roundtrip). You will get another mind-blowing perspective from hiking into the canyon. If you would prefer a bird’s eye view of the Grand Canyon, take a helicopter ride. You will not believe your eyes!

May is an excellent time to visit the Grand Canyon, with more comfortable temperatures and without the summer crowds. Visiting with more comfortable weather is especially important if you will be hiking into the canyon. Temperatures will be warm enough to still be comfortable, but cool enough to safely hike the park’s trails before the summer heat arrives.

In May, temperatures can reach high 70s and at night, drop to the 30s. Keep in mind that elevation can effect this. Late spring is also one of the drier seasons in the park.

To visit the Grand Canyon, fly into Las Vegas, Phoenix, and or Flagstaff and rent a car. From Las Vegas, it is around a 4-and-a-half-hour drive, Phoenix is a 3-and-a-half-hour drive and Flagstaff is an hour and a half away. Otherwise, you can take a bus or ride the Grand Canyon Railway.

Debbie says, “Lodging inside the National Park fills up fast, so ensure you reserve ahead of time. Bright Angel Lodge & Cabins has a natural rustic character to it and is a National Historic Landmark.”

Portland, Maine

If you’re looking for a gorgeous destination in the United States to travel to, look no further than Portland, Maine. Portland is one of the best destinations for a spring holiday in America with its rocky coastline views, great seafood, craft beer, and beautiful lighthouses that allow for an unforgettable vacation. 

Portland is a popular summer destination in New England for its sandy beaches and coastal charm. However, late spring is a great time to explore the city before the tourists arrive for a quieter, authentic view of the city. 

First, head to Fort Williams Park, where you’ll find the famous Portland Head Light—the oldest and most photographed lighthouse in the United States. Then, head to Old Port, where you can shop at dozens of local boutiques and grab something to eat at popular restaurants, like Duckfat, The Holy Donut, and Luke’s Lobster Portland Pier. 

If you’re a beer drinker, don’t miss the chance to explore Portland’s buzzing independent craft brewery scene. Allagash Brewing Company and Oxbow Blending and Bottling are two local breweries that should top your list. Or, you can go lobster catching, whale watching, or sightseeing on a boat ride from Casco Bay. 

With average temperatures in the high-60s, you may still need a light jacket in May. You can expect around 3″ of rain in May.

If you’re flying into Portland, you’ll likely fly into Portland International Jetport, just a five-mile drive from Downtown Portland. Once you arrive in the city, you can begin to experience many of the  best things to do in Portland immediately.

San Diego, California

San Diego, California is a great choice for a May getaway. It is one of the best places for a spring holiday in the USA as the summer crowds haven’t arrived and it is not too hot. You can get reservations at some of the  best restaurants in San Diego  and you can leisurely explore the top things to do.

Known as one of the best zoos in the United States, the San Diego Zoo is definitely one of the city’s most popular attractions.  In late spring, you will see also lots of cute little baby animals jumping around the exhibits, a special sight to see.

Consider taking the ferry from downtown San Diego across the San Diego Bay to Coronado. You can explore the Coronado Ferry Landing, stroll along Orange Ave and explore the adorable shops and restaurants, and then visit the iconic Hotel Del Coronado. 

In May, you can celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Old Town San Diego. This is not a traditional Mexican Celebration, but still a fun event. Old Town San Diego puts on a great show that is fun for the whole family and you will find some tasty Mexican food there as well.

If you want to get a real taste of Mexico, you can add a day-trip to Tijuana. It is easy to reach by car or the trolley and you can just walk over the border. 

Average temperatures are pleasant between 60-69 F. In the mornings, you will often have overcast skies, especially along the beaches, known as “May Gray”. But no worries, it usually clears up around 11:00 am or 12:00 pm.

You have almost no chance of rain in May and you can enjoy plenty of sunshine. In other words, the weather is perfect.

San Diego is easy to get to with the San Diego International airport right in the heart of the city. Downtown is only about a 5-7 minute taxi-ride.

Maria says, “Depending on your itinerary, you can either stay on the beach at one of the many beautiful beach resorts (some of my favorites are the Bali-styled Catamaran Inn in Mission Bay and The Seabird in Oceanside) or right in the heart of Downtown (the Grant Hyatt towers are a great choice, as you are in the city, but still get a stunning bay view).

Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota

In May, the northern parts of the United States have thawed from the cold winters. Voyageurs National Park, one of the less-visited in the national park system, is absolutely beautiful and one of the best places to go to in the United States for a spring trip.

The massive lakes which make up Voyageurs National Park typically thaw completely by early to mid-May, opening up boat access to the far corners of the Park. The landscapes begin to turn lush green, and temperatures are lovely especially compared to the harsh Minnesota winters.

Be sure to get out on a boat and see the beautiful scenery from the water. In May, you might get lucky and catch a glimpse of one of the many pairs of bald eagles who nest every year there. You may even see their young poking their heads up from the nest waiting for food.

Fishing season for popular walleye, northern pike, and sauger opens in mid-May. If you like to fish, this is a fantastic way to enjoy your day. However, if you prefer to explore on land, you’ll enjoy walking the trails and other attractions which are less crowded this time of year.

Make a stop at the Ellsworth Rock Gardens and imagine the amount of time Jack Ellsworth spent creating these sculptures and designs. Also, imagine this being the location of your summer home (as it was for Jack)!

The other notable historic feature of the park is the Kettle Falls Hotel, visited by fur traders, lumberjacks, and those hoping to find gold at Rainy Lake sites. Now it’s a spot where you can get away from the hustle and bustle. It’s also one of the only places in the United States where you can face south and be looking into Canada!

Expect average highs in the mid-60’s and evening lows in the 40’s so make sure you pack a light coat. 

To get to Voyageurs National Park, fly to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP). If you like road trips and driving, the scenery on the four and a half hour drive is stunning.

If you’d prefer a more direct route, there are typically 1-2 flights per day from Minneapolis-St. Paul to International Falls (INL). You can reach many parts of the Park within 30-45 minutes by car. 

Samantha says, “Options are limited for overnight stays in the Park, and the most common place people spend the night is at one of the many campsites scattered throughout.

For overnight hotel accommodations outside of the Park, stay at the Cantilever Hotel in International Falls. Set in an old distillery, this unique hotel offers free parking and is within about 15 minutes of the Rainy Lake Visitors Center in Voyageurs National Park.”

Roanoke, Virginia

There’s a lot to love about Roanoke, especially in late-spring when sunny, scenic views are plentiful. Located in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, a drive along the winding Blue Ridge Parkway is a must-do while in Roanoke. In spring, flowering shrubs and colorful wildflowers, like mountain laurel and rhododendrons, wow passing motorists on the scenic byway.

Make a stop at Explore Park at milepost 115 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. This 1,100-acre recreation area wows with disc golf, hiking and biking trails, kayaking, camping and tubing on the Roanoke River.

In town, plan to hike to the  Mill Mountain Star , the world’s largest man-made star that stands proud at 100 feet tall. An overlook boasts far-reaching views across the Roanoke Valley. The iconic steel star has been welcoming visitors to Roanoke since 1949.

Roanoke is one of the best places to visit for a spring getaway in the USA. Music lovers flock to downtown for Festival in the Park at Elmwood Park. The outdoor festival has it all – crafts, food, music and games. The home opener for the Salem Red Sox, the area’s minor league baseball team, is another must-go in May for hometown baseball and selfies with Mugsy, the team’s lovable mascot.  

Hungry? Settle in at Texas Tavern, a classic 10-stool diner in Roanoke. This longtime cash-only establishment serves up burgers and chili bowls for less than $2 each. The Cheesy Western, a burger topped with a fried egg, cheese, pickles and sweet relish, is a local favorite.

Roanoke is an easy two-hour drive from Greensboro, North Carolina, which is home to an international airport with air service from five national and regional airlines.

New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is one of the best cities to visit in May. The heat of the summer has not yet descended on the city. Known for its fabulous food, fun festivals, jazz music, and interesting history, New Orleans offers something for everyone!

If you are visiting in May, then you have missed the craziness associated with the annual Mardi Gras celebration. Do not worry though, there are still numerous things to do in New Orleans . 

New Orleans hosts festivals throughout the year, and May has a great one, the annual Jazz Festival.  The New Orleans Jazz Festival, which is one of the top festivals in the Big Easy, draws in thousands of people every year. 

While visiting New Orleans, you have to try the fabulous food that made New Orleans famous. For this, grab beignets at Café du Monde, a po’boy sandwich from Killer Po’boys, a muffuletta from Napoleon House, and some Cajun food at Evangeline. 

After your belly is full and you are ready to explore, spend time walking around the French Quarter taking in all of the European architecture while watching and listening to the fun street performers. 

While exploring the French Quarter, do not miss Royal Street. It is lined with great antique shops and unique art galleries, all of which welcome visitors to come inside and enjoy the items that they have for sale. 

Other fun things to do while visiting include shopping at the French Market, checking out the art around Jackson Square, taking a history tour (there are lots of free walking ones), or taking a  day trip from New Orleans  to visit the swamps or plantations.

New Orleans offers beautiful weather in May. The average temperature ranges from the 70s to high 80s Fahrenheit.

Getting to New Orleans is easy. New Orleans is home to an international airport, the Lois Armstrong International Airport. After arriving, you can easily grab a shared ride or taxi to get to the French Quarter. 

Avoid renting a car as the French Quarter is easily walkable. In addition, a trolley system runs from the French Quarter to the Garden District.

Great Basin National Park, Nevada

Great Basin National Park is a hidden gem and one of the best national parks to visit in May in the USA. While the weather can be unpredictable, it is an ideal time for hiking and exploring around this massive National Park.

The biggest attraction in Great Basin is the Lehman Caves. You can tour these amazing limestone caves filled with stalactites and other incredible formations on a ranger-guided tour. The required tour reservations are easier to get in early May than in the peak summer season.

You can explore more of the rugged terrain on one of the many hikes in Great Basin National Park . You can find trails that lead to alpine lakes or ancient bristlecone pine trees or even the base of a glacier. If you want a real challenge, you can even attempt the summit of Wheeler Peak, which is the second tallest peak in Nevada. Be aware that you are likely to still find some snow on the trails in May.

The average temperature in Great Basin in May is 66°F (around 40°F at night). There are plenty of sunny days with a small chance of rain.

Since Great Basin sits in the eastern corner of Nevada right by the Utah border, you can fly into Salt Lake City (a 4-hour drive) or Las Vegas (a 5-hour drive).

Anna Maria Island, Florida

Anna Maria Island is a barrier island on the western side of Florida’s Gulf Coast and is surrounded by the Intracoastal Waterway, Tampa Bay, and the Gulf of Mexico. It offers a quaint town packed with great attractions and pristine beaches, making it one of the best beaches to visit in the United States in spring.

Anna Maria Island is a great place to visit all year long, but May is arguably the best month of the year. Considered low season, you will face fewer crowds, with very pleasant temperatures with blue skies all day long. You won’t see such good weather during summertime since Florida normally has a very wet summer with unexpected rain, and higher temperatures hitting 100 degrees Fahrenheit. 

One of the best attractions in Anna Maria Island is the stunning beaches, and you can choose from private and public beaches. Holmes Beach is on top of the list for the best private beaches. You will find fewer people, especially during the week and the sand is unbelievably soft. You can hear the sounds of the waves, collect shells, go for a run or walk and watch incredible sunrises and sunsets .  

Among the public beaches, one of the best is Manatee Beach Park, offering great parking spots, and amenities nearby, including lifeguard stations, cafes, a volleyball area, and showers. 

Average high temperatures reach around 84 °F with evening lows around 71 °F.

There are three major airports around the Island from which to choose. The Sarasota-Bradenton international airport is located just 18 miles – about a half-hour drive.

Another option is Tampa International airport, 50 miles away and about an hour-long journey. You can also fly into Orlando International Airport, located about 2 hours driving.

Washington D.C, District Of Columbia

Washington D.C. attracts millions of tourists every year but it is one of the best cities to visit in the United States in springtime. You will be able to explore the best of what the city has to offer before the peak summer heat and crowds. 

Throughout May, Washington D.C. celebrates its’ international embassies with Passport D.C ., a month-long journey highlighting its thriving international diplomatic community and their unique cultures. May is International Cultural Awareness Month in Washington and Passport DC is 31 days of programming by 70 embassies.

In addition to Passport D.C., visitors should check out one of the 19 famous Smithsonian museums situated along the National Mall. The Smithsonian museums are all free and make a great activity for any age. Popular museums to check out include the National Air & Space museum, Museum of Natural History and the newest Smithsonian, the Museum of African American History and Culture. 

From walking the National Mall and seeing all of the National Monuments and Memorials to enjoying a delicious meal at one of the many outdoor dining options, May is a great time to take a long weekend and explore Washington D.C. . Every Friday evening, the National Gallery of Art hosts Jazz in the Garden, a free concert series in the Sculpture Garden.

Visitors can expect the weather in the District to be in the low to mid 50s in the mornings and low to mid 70s during the day, making it an incredible time to explore the city. You can expect around 3.5″ of rain in May.

Washington D.C. is accessible from three major airports. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (airport code: DCA) is the closest airport followed by Washington Dulles International Airport (Airport code: IAD). 

Additionally, visitors can fly into Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (airport code: BWI). BWI is the farthest of the three airports and is really closer to Baltimore, MD. 

Visitors flying into BWI will have an hour drive or Amtrak ride into Washington D.C while visitors choosing DCA will have a 5 minute drive to get to the National Mall.

Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona

In Northeast Arizona, close to the border with New Mexico, lies mesmerizing Petrified Forest National Park. It is one of the best places to visit for a spring vacation in the United States as it offers petrified logs, ancient petroglyphs, painted desert vistas and Route 66 memorabilia.

The trees at the Petrified Forest were fossilized 211 to 218 million years ago. It’s been inhabited for 13,000 years, during which the petroglyphs were made and pueblos (multi-storied adobe houses) were built.

This are seven walking trails in Petrified Forest National Park . Hike the Puerco Pueblo trail to see a hundred room pueblo and the Crystal Forest trail for viewing the petrified wood. To see the mesmerizing colors of the painted desert up close, consider hiking the Painted Desert Rim Trail.

If you prefer driving than hiking, the main road through the park is spectacular. It has beautiful viewpoints, such as Newspaper Rock, which has over 650 petroglyphs. Stop at one of the historical buildings, such as the Painted Desert Inn National Historic Landmark, and spend time learning about its history. In earlier days, this was a stop for food and water for travelers along the historic Route 66.

May is a good month to visit since it’s ahead of the busiest season. Most people visit in summer. But in summer, it’s hot and violent thunder-storms can occur. In May, temperatures are warm, but not yet above 100°F that you will see in summer. Spring is also the start of the wildflower season.

You can expect lots of sun and average high daily temperatures in the high 70s Fahrenheit but cold evenings.

The international airport closest to the park is Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Hire a car at the airport and drive 205 miles, which will take some 3.5 hours.

Savannah, Georgia

One of the best cities to visit in in America in May is Savannah, Georgia. The weather is great and in May, visitors will find some pretty fun events going on.

Savannah Comic Con, the Savannah Scottish Games, and the Doggie Carnival are just a few. On nearby Tybee Island, visitors can also enjoy the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) Sand Arts Festival. There are also plenty of shows and concerts throughout town in May.

For those on a budget, there are also a lot of  free things to do in Savannah . The city is known for its 22 public squares, so visitors should put on their walking shoes and explore as many as possible. Each is unique with different statues and memorials, and all are beautiful.

There is also a lot of history in Savannah. Visitors can go on a free walking tour that covers the last few hundred years. It’s a great way to learn about the city’s founders, historic homes, Black history, and even discover movie locations!

Savannah’s architecture is also worth noting. One of the most iconic and visited structures in Savannah is the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. The cathedral is free to enter, although they do appreciate a donation. It is known for its white exterior, stained glass windows, and Renaissance-style murals

The weather is great, with an average high temperature of 84°F and an average low temperature of 65°F. The rainy season hasn’t yet started, so visitors will only get the occasional shower.

Savannah is easy to reach by plane or car. Visitors wanting to fly can land at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (Airport Code: SAV). Those wanting to do a road trip can get to Savannah off of Interstate 95.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Philadelphia, one of the most historic and walkable cities in the United States, is one of the best cities in America to visit in May. Temperatures are in the early seventies (Fahrenheit) and encourage exploration of the city on foot. It also welcomes you into the outdoors at a host of fascinating venues.

May kicks off several street festivals, including the South Street Spring Festival, 9th Street Italian Market Festival, and Rittenhouse Row Spring Festival. Parks come alive with spring foliage and people basking in the outdoors. Don’t miss Robert Indiana’s 1978 LOVE sculpture in Love Park or wandering through Philadelphia’s family-friendly Franklin Square.

At the Independence Seaport Museum, climb aboard the Cruiser U.S.S.  Olympia , the worlds’ oldest floating steel warship, and the World War II submarine  Becuna . For something different, the Mütter Museum houses an eclectic collection of antique medical equipment and an intriguing variety of anatomical and pathological specimens.

For those interested in penal tourism and abandoned places, the historically significant  Eastern State Penitentiary, the ‘magnificent ruin’ of Philadelphia, is not to be missed. Once the most expensive and famous prison in the world, Eastern State stands today as a hauntingly beautiful collection of crumbling cellblocks, deserted guard towers, and stirring exhibits. In an era when prison reform is on the minds of many people, Eastern State is the closest thing there is to a national prison museum.

Explore the world’s largest outdoor gallery of stunning street art with Mural Arts Philadelphia, an organization with deep roots in the anti-graffiti network of the 1980s. Sign up for one of the tours by foot, trolley, train, or Segway to be introduced to art that has empowered communities, transformed neighbourhoods, and sparked economic revitalization.  

For foodies, the covered Reading Terminal Market boasts a drooling mix of ready-to-eat food and fresh produce. And of course, no visit to Philadelphia is complete without feasting on a Philly cheesesteak. Conveniently, Pat’s King of Steaks and Geno’s Steaks are across the street from each other. Choose one of the rivals claiming to produce the best cheesesteak and decide for yourself.

In May, you can expect lovely weather with average temperatures in the mid 70s Fahrenheit with about 3″ of rain.

The city center from the Philadelphia Airport (PHL) is a short 24 minute train ride away. There are also bus, shuttle, and taxi services.

The Amtrak station is inside the 30 th  Street Station on the edge of Philadelphia’s Center City. From New York City, the journey takes one hour and 30 minutes. From Washington, it takes two hours.

Napa, California

With beautiful warm temperatures, Napa is one of the best places to visit in the United States in May.

There are several amazing wineries to explore in Napa that it’s often hard to narrow them down. One strategy is to choose a diverse selection to visit.

One favorite is Jarvis Estate. You won’t believe how massive this 45,000 square-foot cave is. However, make sure you find the spectacular waterfall. You’ll want to sit here all day listening to the water flowing as you look at the wine barrels lining the cave walls.

After your tour of the cave, make your way to the Tasting Room, where you can sample several Jarvis Estate and Reserve Collection wines.

The next vineyard is Castello di Amorosa, which is a replica of a 13th century Tuscan castle. The courtyard is lovely, and you will feel like you’ve been transported to Europe. Walk around the castle and take a stroll through the vineyard.

Finally, your last vineyard should be Darioush Winery. This winery is inspired by the owner’s Iranian culture and they have chosen to share it with visitors. The torch outside of the winery will take your breath away and the pillars that loom at the entrance are amazing. After you finish your tasting, tour the vineyard, gardens, and fountains.

Average high temperatures in May are 75 degrees Fahrenheit with very little rain.

It is an easy one-hour drive from either Oakland International Airport or San Francisco International Airport. You should check out both airports to find the cheapest flights from your destination.  

Christine says, “When it comes to a hotel recommendation, it has to be The Archer in downtown Napa.  The Archer is located within walking distance to over 20 tasting rooms, cute boutiques, and trendy restaurants.

It has a fabulous rooftop bar that offers breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views of the valley as well as downtown Napa. You also don’t have to go far for one of the best restaurants in Napa, because the Charlie Palmer Steak House is right at the hotel.”

Moab, Utah is one of the best outdoor destinations to visit in America in May. The weather is beautiful and it is also less crowded than the middle of summer. Accordingly, you’re more likely to score better prices on airfare and accommodations.

Moab is a quirky town and while it’s known for its red rock cliffs and geological formations, it’s just as memorable for its unique mix of outdoor vibes, Wild Western gruffness, and artsy reverence.

There’s so much to see and do for a tiny town boasting a population of less than 6,000. For example, a trip to Moab wouldn’t be complete without a stop at Arches National Park , where you can hike and explore over 2,000 sandstone arches carved over time, including the iconic Delicate Arch.

For a different kind of scenery, drive to either Canyonlands National Park or Dead Horse State Park, where you can walk along the edge of a mesa, peering down to the canyon floor thousands of feet below, carved by the Green and Colorado Rivers.

While Moab is all about outdoor adventure, be sure to save some time to explore the town itself, full of colorful murals, art galleries, and locally-owned food trucks.

The skies are clear and sunny, with average daytime highs in around 79 °F, before the scorching heat of the summer months.

To get to this gem of a town, you’ll need to fly into Salt Lake City and make the four hour drive to southeastern Utah. While that may sound like a lot of driving, the landscape along the way is absolutely stunning.

Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville is one of the best places in America for May vacations. The weather is very nice with lots of lovely spring blooms. It is located in the charming Blue Ridge Mountains and has great outdoor activities. It is also famous for its breweries. There are more breweries per capita than anywhere else in the US.

One of the biggest attractions in Asheville is the historic Biltmore Estate. George Vanderbilt built a 178,926 square foot mansion which included a swimming pool, a library with over 22,000 books, and beautiful gardens. Today, the mansion is open for tours.

Another fun thing to do is explore the  Blue Ridge Parkway near Asheville. The stretch of roadway is commonly referred to as “America’s Favorite Drive.” Along the way, you will find beautiful waterfalls, scenic overlooks, and lots of great hiking trails.

The hike to the top of Mount Pisgah and Frying Pan Mountain Lookout Tower boast beautiful views of the area. If you love waterfalls, consider hiking to Moore Cove Falls as well.

You can expect average highs around 75 degrees Fahrenheit and average lows around 53 degrees Fahrenheit. There are about eight days of rain in May. The weather is starting to heat up as it approaches summer but is still very nice in May to explore and hike.

Asheville Regional Airport is about 17 miles south of the city center. Because of the small size of the airport, flights may be expensive and limited in availability. The closest international airport to Asheville is Charlotte Douglas International Airport. It is about 120 miles southeast of Asheville.

San Antonio, Texas

One of the best places to visit in the USA for spring holidays is Texas as the weather is beautiful before the scorching heat of summer. You may not think of Texas as one of the top places to go, but that is a huge mistake, particularly the San Antonio area and surrounding Texas Hill Country.

One of the best things to do in San Antonio is to see the historic Spanish Missions , a UNESCO Heritage Site. You can bike among them or take a tour and learn about their history. Of course, the most famous is the Alamo!

Next, you should visit the San Antonio Riverwalk. There is so much to see and do here and it is home to some of the best restaurants in San Antonio.

Finally, make sure to take a day trip to Texas Hill Country and see the cute towns and beautiful views.

It is around 86F high and 66F low which is the perfect temperature to enjoy sightseeing.

You will want to fly into San Antonio International Airport, but you can also fly into Austin as flight prices may be a little better.

Kauai, Hawaii

Kauai is one of the best places to go in America for May getaways. It’s just before the busy summer season, yet past the rainy season so it’s literally the perfect time to visit!

One of the top things to do on the island is visit the  best Kauai beaches . If you’re looking for amazing snorkeling, try Tunnels Beach or Kiahuna Beach. For sunbathing, Poipu Beach or Hanalei Beach are great. However, be weary of waves on the North Shore – they can be quite rough!

Other popular activities include seeing the NaPali Coast from the Kalalau Lookout at Koke’e State Park. It’s a stunning sight, and one you won’t soon forget! Be sure to stop at the Waimea Canyon. And if you’re feeling adventurous, strap on some hiking boots and hike the famous Waimea Canyon Trail, where you’ll feel the vast canyon from the inside!

You’ll see averages in the mid-70’s, although with humidity it feels more like over 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the day. The sun gets really hot in Kauai so be prepared with plenty of reef-safe sunblock! Oh, and pack an umbrella because there are often short pockets of rain showers.

To visit Kauai, you’ll fly into the Lihue Airport either directly or transfer from another Hawaiian Island like Oahu. 

Nikki says, “Once you arrive in Lihue, I recommend a hotel or renting a vacation property in Poipu. It’s the sunniest and driest side of the island and is also convenient to a bunch of restaurants.

The Sheraton Kauai Resort is right on the beach. Upgrade to a waterfront view for the ultimate hotel experience. Staying in Poipu also lets you explore the rest of the island easily. Poipu is about 30 minutes south of the Lihue Airport.”

Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin

Wisconsin Dells is a city in south-central Wisconsin and a popular tourist destination. Travelers should consider going there for springtime trips because the temperature is not too hot and the summer crowds have not yet arrived.

The city has a lot of great activities for visitors to enjoy. Travelers can start their trip by taking the Original Wisconsin Duck Boat Tour . This vehicle takes you on a water excursion on the Wisconsin River and Lake Delton. After that, it transforms into a land vehicle and roams around exploring nature trails. It is pretty cool.

Another terrific option is  hiking in Wisconsin Dells  on the East Bluff Wood Trail. It is a smooth, stairless, and open trail where you can experience rocky streams while listening to nature. 

Finally, you should visit Wilderness Waterpark Resort, the largest waterpark resort in America. There are four indoor and four outdoor water parks. It is a perfect place for families as there is something for every age. Kids can enjoy the slides and adults can take a lazy bath. You can even book a poolside cabana for a day.

The average high temperature is 70 °F degrees in May, with around 3″ of rain.

It is easily reached with a flight to Chicago O’Hare International Airport, and then drive two hours to Wisconsin Dells

A Spontaneous, 24-Hour Trip To Chicago, Illinois, Created A Core Memory

When I turned 40 , I made a promise to myself that this would be my best year yet. I would get reacquainted with the "me" that existed before becoming a partner, mom, and coworker; I would tap into my truest self and embrace the awesome and wise woman I am. I would travel to the places I write about, alone and with my kids. I would get out of my own way; making "yes, and" my mantra and see where that got me.

It got me to Chicago, Illinois. To a P!INK concert at Soldier Field with one of my favorite people in the world .

My spontaneous "yes and" mindset was put to the test a few weeks ago, when I got a text on a random weekday asking if I'd be up for seeing P!INK the following weekend in Chicago. I thought about it for less than a minute; I was in. I found a cheap (and direct!) flight from CVG to Midway, and Jackie used her budget traveling stealth to secure us a room at the Congress Hotel , a historic hotel right on Michigan Avenue just minutes from the stadium.

Packing for such a quick trip was a breeze; I was able to fit everything into a sleek backpack. I'd never flown into Chicago before; the waters of Lake Michigan are a brilliant cobalt blue and the cityscape -- with its striking architecture and iconic attractions -- is breathtaking. My 10-year-old is super into baseball right now and was delighted at this photo I snapped flying over the White Sox stadium:

Chicago is an incredibly walkable town and it's easy to get around on foot or with public transportation, which kept this trip extremely affordable, especially as we split the bill (and our concert tickets were just $40).

The concert itself was awesome - if you ever get the chance to see P!INK, do it. She put on an incredible show that brought me back to high school in all the best ways. More importantly, though, if you ever get the opportunity to drop everything and rendezvous with a lovely friend for a night in the city, do it. This kind of spontaneous travel makes way for the kind of memories that last a lifetime.

New Orleans tends to have its busiest season around Mardi Gras, which means tons of crowds coming in from all over. If you want to avoid the busy season, visiting New Orleans in May is a great way to enjoy the city without many people around.

The weather in New Orleans in May is quite warm, but not uncomfortably so. It’s the perfect weather for lounging by a pool or hanging out by Bayou St. John. In fact, May brings out some of the best festivals in New Orleans, including Bayou Boogaloo . The festival invites you to float about on the bayou while taking in music from top artists, food from vendors all over the city, and art from local talent. 

But Bayou Boogaloo isn’t the only big event happening in New Orleans in May. Although the 10-day party begins in late April, the annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival lasts into May. With New Orleans being considered the birthplace of jazz, it’s no surprise that this massive festival is such a top attraction in the city.

Unlike in the summer, fewer crowds are typically in Wyoming-based Grand Teton in May. May is also a top time for wildlife sightseeing. The landscape during this time is just as incredible as the creatures around you. From the snowcapped mountains to the lush wildflowers beginning to bloom, you’re not going to want to forget your camera to capture it all.

Hiking will take you up to wonderful viewpoints, but keep in mind that there may still be mud and snow on the trails. Pack your gear accordingly. Sedona, Arizona

During the summer, Sedona can get so hot that it’s not a good idea to go on long hikes while the sun is beating down. Monsoon season, which lasts from June to September, can also keep you from your Sedona adventures.

Take advantage of the lack of crowds in May by visiting some of the many highlights of Los Angeles. From seeing your favorite sets on studio tours to hiking in Griffith Park, you’ll find May is an ideal time to do it all. Because kids aren’t out on summer vacation yet, you’ll discover that many of the top family-friendly spots in the Los Angeles area are especially quieter. 

Be sure to fit in a day at Knott’s Berry Farm , Disneyland , or Universal Studios Hollywood if you’re a theme park fan. These spots tend to be packed during the summer, but May will give you a break from the long wait times for your favorite rides. Savannah, Georgia

While Savannah tends to get quite hot and humid in the summer, May is considerably milder, but it’s still plenty warm enough to explore outside. You’ll find that the parks are in bloom, with lush greenery and colorful flowers abound. 

Have a picnic in Forsyth Park, and don’t forget to stroll through its Fragrant Garden. If you’re an animal lover, you should be sure to stop by Forsyth Park on May 7 for the annual Doggie Carnival , an event that’s filled with fun for the whole family, including the furry members of the family.

Later in the month, you’ll find perfect weather for a day at the beach or a kayaking adventure. And although you’re not visiting during the spooky season, you can enjoy the haunted happenings of this historically ghostly city. Strolling through the beautiful Bonaventure Cemetery is a must-do, as it’s considered one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world and is gorgeously green in May.

Antelope Canyon

Antelope Canyon is a part of the Lake Powell Navajo Tribal Park, located near the Arizona – Utah border. It also happens to be one of the most beautiful and unique places in the US. And May is a perfect time to visit.

Only accessible through a guided tour, Antelope Canyon was shaped by millions of years of water and wind erosion. As sunlight enters through the canyon, it illuminates it and paints it a stunning pattern of pinks, reds, oranges, and golds. 

You’ll want to visit when these light beams are most common, which is between May and September. But May is also a bit cooler than the weather you’ll find over the summer. You also may want to aim to arrive around midday, when the light is most likely to hit the canyon.

The hiking terrain of the Upper Antelope Canyon is mostly flat, making it attainable for even new hikers, though it does require the ability to climb some steep stairs. More adventurous hikers can take the Lower Antelope Canyon, which has more elevation changes, stairways, and ladders. 

Death Valley National Park

Another beautiful place to visit in the US in May doesn’t sound like it would be as stunning as it is. But you’ll want to go very early in May if you don’t want to face temperatures that are too hot to hike in. 

Summer is a long season in Death Valley National Park, and May may as well be summer in this gorgeous area of the world. Still, visiting in May instead of earlier in spring will keep your trip quieter since most of the spring breakers will be gone.

So, be prepared for heat, but also be prepared to see some of the most impressive sights in the world. Look out over Badwater Basin, the lowest point in the US, from Dante’s View, or watch the sunset from Zabriskie Point. 

Take in the pink, blue, and purple hills of Artist’s Palette, or watch the water cascade through Darwin Falls. The diverse beauty of this incredible place would surprise anyone who heard the name of this national park and pictured a desolate wasteland. This area is anything but breathtaking.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

With mild temperatures and gentle breezes, May is an optimal time to explore Philadelphia . If you’re a history buff, there are few places in the US more incredible to visit than Philly. From the Liberty Bell to Independence Hall, stepping foot in Philadelphia is like stepping back in time. 

Like New York City, Philadelphia can get rather cold during the winter months. But things come back to life in spring, with many attractions popping up for the summer in May. 

Spruce Street Harbor Park along the Delaware River is one such place that comes back to life in May. Here you’ll find colorful hammocks, floating gardens, light-filled trees, local craft brews, and food from some of Philly’s best vendors. It’s a perfect place to spend a May evening.

May also brings about some of the best of Philadelphia’s festivals, like the South 9th Street Italian Market Festival . This annual event is held on a weekend in May and invites guests to celebrate Italian culture. Be sure to arrive with an empty stomach because this festival is considered one of the best food festivals in the country.

Kauai, Hawaii

There’s so much beauty on every island in Hawaii, but the lush greenery of Kauai is what makes it one of the best places to visit in the US in May. The Garden Island is known for its natural beauty, waterfalls, and stunning views. 

The rainy season in Kauai typically ends at the end of March, so you should expect the dry season to be fully in effect by May. Temperatures should be rising, creating the perfect climate to spend your days in the water.

Go paddleboarding through the Wailua River, cruise along the Na Pali Coast, or go snorkeling at Anini Beach. With so much natural beauty here, you should take your days slowly. Just enjoy the sights and the fresh air. 

If you arrive early enough in the month, be sure to take part in Lei Day, which happens on the first of May. Lei Day is one of Hawaii’s biggest holidays. It celebrates the Aloha spirit and is all about Hawaiian culture and history.

Nashville, Tennessee

Nashville’s busiest season is typically from June to August, so you can expect that you’ll have to contend with fewer crowds if you visit in May. Early in May, you’ll find the weather fairly warm but mild, but it heats up throughout the month.

With the weather being nice and warm, you’ll be able to enjoy both the indoor and outdoor activities that Nashville has to offer. Since you’re in Music City, you should definitely see a show while you’re there. 

There’s always a concert happening in Nashville. But you don’t have to shell out a lot to hear great music in this city. Head to Centennial Park to enjoy free concerts Friday and Saturday nights throughout May. 

It’s also a great time of year to book a hop-on, hop-off bus tour, letting you see all of the city’s top landmarks. May also is Street Food Month in Nashville, so keep your eyes peeled for an influx of food trucks throughout the city.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Myrtle Beach is a top summer vacation spot, so June, July, and August are typically busy months for this beachy location. But May has equally gorgeous weather without the same crowd levels. The weather here typically heats up quite a bit throughout the month. You’ll find going later in the month will mean warmer days and better swimming conditions. 

Spring in Myrtle Beach is also golf season, and there are plenty of courses to spend a day out on the links. May also brings about the world-famous Blue Crab Festival , during which you can spend the weekend dining on local seafood, listening to music on the beaches, and finding souvenirs from local artisans!

1. louisville, kentucky  .

Louisville, Kentucky , is a fabulous place to visit in May, especially if you are visiting for the Kentucky Derby — the longest-running sporting event in the USA. 

The Kentucky Derby usually takes place at the beginning of May, so be sure you grab your tickets plenty of time in advance! However, the Kentucky Derby Museum — one of the best museums in Louisville  — is still a fabulous spot to visit even if you can’t make it to the derby. 

However, there are still plenty of awesome things to do in Louisville in May besides the Kentucky Derby. Head down to Whiskey Row and explore the museums, distilleries, and fabulous restaurants on this historic street. If you’re looking for great restaurants in Louisville , don’t miss Repeal Oak-Fired Steakhouse or Doc Crow’s Southern Smokehouse & Bar. 

Kentucky is also where 95% of the world’s bourbon is made, so you also can’t miss embarking on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail to sample some bourbon for yourself. Maker’s Mark Distillery is my personal favorite — the tour is super detailed, and the bourbon is delicious!

2. Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado  

If you’re looking for one of the best places to visit in May in the USA, then you can’t beat Rocky Mountain National Park. Fly into Denver International Airport and then drive 90 minutes to Estes Park. After all, May is the perfect time to visit since the crowds of summer haven’t arrived yet.  

The temperature is mild with daily highs of 51°F and daily lows of 33°F. While the month does see around eleven days of rain, that also means that the meadows are lush, with plenty of elk grazing the area with their babies. You’ll also see plenty of wildflowers since Indian Paintbrush, Forget-Me-Nots, and Alpine Aven will all be in full bloom.  

If you time your visit for Memorial Day weekend, then you’ll be able to take a scenic drive along  Trail Ridge Road . It’s the highest continuously paved road in the country since it reaches an elevation of 12,183 feet and offers stunning views of the surrounding Rocky Mountains.  

Other fun things to do in Rocky Mountain National Park include hiking the Upper Beaver Meadow Loop, Deer Mountain, and Little Horseshoe Park Trail. Just be sure to stick to lower elevations since many higher-elevation trails are still covered in snow.

Gulf Shores, Alabama is popular for its pristine white sandy beaches and beautiful water. And there’s no better time to  visit Gulf Shores  than in May. Summers get very hot and humid on the Gulf Coast of Alabama and can make being outside unbearable, but when visiting Gulf Shores in May, you’ll have the perfect weather for playing, relaxing, and swimming. 

Besides spending time on the beaches and swimming in Gulf Shores, this town also offers plenty of fun family activities such as mini-golf, go-cart riding, and shopping.  You’ll also have to visit the nearby theme park and indoor waterpark Tropic Falls at OWA. 

Gulf Shores offers plenty of delicious restaurants including the fun, family-friendly Lulu’s. Lulu’s has an excellent menu, live music, and even a large outdoor sand area for kids to play. The Finger Lakes region of New York is easily one of the best places to visit in May in the USA. The area is best known for its wine, lakes, and waterfalls. May is a great time to enjoy all three! During the spring, the waterfalls are flowing furiously with all the winter snowmelt. The powerful water flow creates magical scenes throughout the region. 

Explore popular state parks like Watkins Glen, Letchworth, and Taughannock Falls, among others. Use Watkins Glen as your home base. You’ll have convenient access to many things to do in Watkins Glen , and the rest of the region is easily accessible, too. After venturing around the outdoor spaces in the morning, enjoy an afternoon tasting wine on an outdoor patio with a lake in view. There are many to choose from! Seneca Lake has the most options, but it’s the most commercialized. Each lake has its own flair! 

End the day by getting a bite to eat at Kindred Fare in Geneva, NY. It’s at the opposite end of Seneca lake from Watkins Glen, but you won’t be disappointed if you make the effort to visit and enjoy their farm-to-table, seasonal dishes. Making a reservation ahead of time is highly recommended!

Visiting Portland in the spring offers an opportunity to see the city without breaking the bank. There’s much to see and experience during this shoulder season, too. The average daily temperatures begin to rise to make outdoor activities extremely enjoyable. Stroll the Old Port for some shopping, visit the famous Portland Head Light at sunset, or take a food tour with Maine Foodie Tours .

7. Savannah, Georgia  

May is a fantastic time of year to visit Savannah, Georgia since it’s when the jasmine is in full bloom throughout the Historic District. That means the city not only looks pretty, but it smells nice, too! In addition to jasmine, which is sometimes nicknamed Confederate jasmine or star jasmine, the beautiful Southern magnolias also bloom in late spring. You might also spot purple agapanthus, aka: “Lily of the Nile”. 

Savannah is hot, but not too hot, during the month of May, which makes it one of the best places to visit in May in the USA. The afternoon hours are best for indoor activities, such as exploring museums or going on trolley tours or river cruises , while the cooler morning and evening hours are ideal for outdoor activities. Try strolling down beautiful Jones Street or go on one of the city’s popular late-night  Savannah ghost tours  (if you dare!). After all, Savannah is known for being haunted ! Beach lovers can head out to Tybee Island , which is only 25 minutes away. The water is warm enough for swimming in May. 

There are plenty of popular places to eat in Savannah , but if you want to go where the locals go, try Common Thread, Alligator Soul, The Collins Quarter, or Foxy Loxy Café.

8. Juneau, Alaska  

May is the perfect time of year to visit Juneau, Alaska because it experiences less rain than the summer months. In the last few weeks, the humpback whales have arrived in Alaska, and Juneau provides one of the best places to see them. 

Close to downtown,  Mendenhall Glacier  allows you to see a giant ice field. At Mendenhall Glacier Park, you can enjoy gorgeous views of house-sized icebergs floating down the lake and take a short hike to Nugget Falls. For the adventurous, consider booking a whale-watching and Mendenhall Glacier tour .

In downtown Juneau, the Mount Roberts Tramway transports you to the top of the mountain. Wear your hiking boots and take the trail to Father Brown Cross for magnificent views of the Gastineau Channel. Avid hikers can trek further but expect snow and muddy conditions in May. 

After a busy day, check out Tracy’s Crab Shack, known for its fantastic crab selection. During peak times, expect to wait to dine at Tracy’s, but the food is worth the wait.

9. San Antonio, Texas  

San Antonio is one of the best places to visit in May in the USA since the weather is beautiful and there are fewer crowds.

There are also several fun festivals held in San Antonio in May, such as the Tejano Conjunto Festival — full of Texan music and culture — as well as Springfest, North America’s largest carnival! With San Antonio being known as “Military City USA,” an Armed Forces Parade runs along the river in May, with decorated floats and patriotic music — a great way to pay tribute to the men & women who serve our country. 

There are so many  things to do in San Antonio , with the San Antonio Riverwalk being Texas’ most visited tourist attraction and absolutely worth a visit! Walk the downtown loop of The Riverwalk — it’s such a beautiful area and there are many Tex-Mex atmospheric restaurants serving authentic food! Casa Rio is the famous restaurant along The Riverwalk that has colorful umbrellas outside and is worth a visit!

10. Newport, Rhode Island  

May is a fabulous time to visit the gorgeous coastal town of Newport, Rhode Island. Since this city is such a popular destination to visit in the summer, the shoulder season (particularly May) is a great time to enjoy all it has to offer with warmer temperatures, less rain, and cheaper prices. 

There are tons of charming things to do in Newport, Rhode Island . Perhaps best of all is touring the Newport Mansions. These ornate residences from the Gilded Age sit along the Atlantic Ocean and boast stunning architecture and gorgeous interiors. The Breakers, Marble House, and The Elms are some of the most popular. You can book a trolley tour to see several of the mansions with admission to The Breakers!

You should also take the opportunity to stroll down the Cliff Walk — a nature trail with scenic views of the ocean and the mansions — and go shopping on Bellevue Avenue and Thames Street. 11. Holland, Michigan  

The beautiful beach town of Holland, Michigan, is one of the best places to visit in May in the USA for the popular Tulip Time Festival. During spring, millions of vibrant tulips begin blooming, set against the backdrop of the historic DeZwann Windmill. 

Locals and tourists alike eagerly wait for this amazing festival each year! If you can, plan to visit during this event, occurring May 6–14 in 2023. The town comes alive with traditional Dutch dancing, a parade, and food vendors. Spend time in downtown Holland in the quaint shops or dine at a variety of restaurants including Boatwerks, with a waterfront view.

12. Virginia Beach, Virginia  

Virginia Beach is one of the best places to visit in May in the USA— especially before school lets out and throngs of people stake out their spots on the sandy beaches. There is plenty of sunshine in May too, making this time of year just right for enjoying surfing beaches, bike trails, state parks, and the vibrantly colored murals (and not to mention, the ice cream!). 

Order a scoop of mint chocolate chip at Lolly’s and stroll the three-mile paved boardwalk. A stop to ogle the 34-foot-tall King Neptune statue at the 31st Street beach entrance is practically mandatory when in Virginia Beach. Walk the ViBe Creative District to see dozens of colorful murals, including the “Greetings from Virginia Beach” mural at The Beach Bully on 19th Street. Some murals take over the entire exterior walls of buildings in this coastal town. 

Off the beach, there are  Virginia Beach hiking trails  for all levels. At First Landing State Park, the Bald Cypress Trail guides visitors across a freshwater swamp with curious bald cypress trees. Bring your bikes to pedal the six-mile Cape Henry Trail at this state park.

13. Napa Valley, California  

Napa Valley is the best wine-producing region in the country, with celebrated vineyards that are the envy of winemakers across the globe. Napa is located just an hour’s drive across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco and is a great destination for a road trip but is even better for a weekend getaway. 

The perfect time to taste your way through Napa is in May when the crowds are at a minimum, and the weather is perfect for a picnic in the vineyards. The month of May starts on the quieter side with lower shoulder season pricing on accommodations and easy-to-book appointments at tasting rooms. As the month moves toward summer, the temperatures and the energy in the valley start to heat up with the Bottle Rock music festival that combines wine, food, and legendary bands. 

If incredible wine is not enough, Napa Valley is also a top gastronomic destination with incredible restaurants that range from casual roadside diners to world-class fine dining. Make sure to stop by legendary Chef Thomas Keller’s Bouchon Bakery to grab a few macarons and a croissant aux amandes. You can also drive to Healdsburg (less than an hour from Napa) to check out some of the best Healdsburg restaurants .

Take a break from wine tasting in Napa with a stop for lunch at the Oxbow Market. 14. Antelope Canyon, Arizona  

Antelope Canyon is one of the best places in May in the USA for one major reason — it is one of the best months to see the light beams that pour down from the cracks in the ceiling of this incredible slot canyon! 

May is a popular month to visit Antelope Canyon, so be prepared for crowds and book your tickets in advance. Even though there will be crowds, honestly Antelope Canyon is always crowded unless you visit in the wintertime. A way to avoid crowds is to visit one of the lesser-known canyons such as  Antelope Canyon X .  

There are also lots of other amazing things to check out while you’re in the area such as the Horseshoe Bend overlook. A short hike will take you to the overlook which is one of the most incredible views out over the Colorado River. Lake Powell is also nearby, which is a gorgeous lake that looks like a canyon with steep walls and rock faces. Make sure you don’t miss walking across the Glen Canyon Dam while you’re there as well, which is the second largest man-made dam in the USA behind the Hoover Dam. 

If you’re looking for a place to grab a bite to eat, head to Birdhouse, which is one of the best restaurants in Page, the closest town to Antelope Canyon. You’ll find a hip atmosphere with delicious fried chicken and craft beer.

15. Columbia River Gorge, Oregon  

The Columbia River Gorge is one of the most beautiful areas of Oregon, and the absolute best time to visit is in May! May is peak Spring in the Pacific Northwest and a great time for hiking and sightseeing. The temperatures warm up averaging from 47°F to about 63°F, making the weather perfect for a cool hike. 

The highlight of spring in Oregon is early May when the wildflowers start blooming! Take a  wildflower hike in the Columbia River Gorge  to see a display of yellow and purple flowers. Some of the best spots are Rowena Plateau and Memaloose Hills near Hood River. If you’re staying in Portland, you can even book a half-day tour from the city to experience the waterfalls on a hiking adventure.

Spring is also when the waterfalls are at peak flow in the Gorge. Drive down the Waterfall Corridor and stop at some of the best waterfalls in Oregon, including Latourell Falls, Multnomah Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls. All of these are a half-mile hike or less, but there are also longer waterfall hikes in the Gorge.  

To get to the Columbia River Gorge, fly into Portland International Airport. From there it is an hour and a half or less drive to get to most places mentioned above. Hood River is a great nearby town to stay in, close to the Gorge. The Hood River Hotel is a cute historic hotel downtown, or you can stay in a rental nearby. Hood River is full of great breweries, Full Fail Brewing and Friem Family Brewers being two of the more popular ones.

16. Jackson Hole, Wyoming  

Jackson Hole, Wyoming is an amazing destination to explore in the month of May. It’s the perfect time to enjoy fewer crowds, scenic drives, and wildlife viewing. The temperatures are still a bit on the cool side so dress in layers and be prepared for rain or snow in May! 

Visiting Grand Teton National Park in May is a must for a Jackson Hole vacation. Plan one day to drive the 42-mile full loop road through Grand Teton. Some visitor centers, lodges, and other services in the park may not be open until late May. 

When wildlife viewing around Jackson Hole, some areas could be closed due to bear activity and other wildlife management in May so be sure to follow instructions on any posted signs. 

Hiking is one of the popular ways to explore the Jackson Hole and Grand Teton areas. In May, the trails can be muddy or even snow-covered, especially for higher-elevation hikes. At the end of the day, enjoy dinner at Bubba’s Bar-B-Que in Jackson Hole. It’s a local classic!

17. Maui, Hawaii  

With warm, sunny weather during all months, the Hawaiian Islands are a year-round destination, but if you want to avoid peak season,  traveling to Maui  in May is a great month to experience this magical slice of paradise. May is considered the shoulder season in Maui, which helps you avoid the crowds and save a few bucks. It is also one of the best spring vacations in USA for older Americans .

In the shoulder or low season, you can usually get better deals on accommodations, tours, and rental cars, especially at the last minute. Official whale season ends May 15th, so try arriving at the beginning of May to catch a few of these majestic creatures in their natural habitat on a whale-watching tour .

Make sure not to miss out on Fleetwood’s on Front Street when you are cruising historic Lahaina town. This lively joint has the only rooftop bar in Lahaina, an amazing happy hour, and is owned by the rock and roll legend himself, Mick Fleetwood. This restaurant is packed year-round, so making a reservation ahead of time is highly encouraged.

18. St. Louis, Missouri  

Kick off your summer of fun with a city break in St. Louis, Missouri.  The Gateway to the West boasts a variety of attractions that won’t break the bank., making it one of the best places to visit in May in the USA.

One of the best things to do in St. Louis is to explore Gateway Arch National Park. The underground museum is free and has captivating exhibits about the nation’s expansion to the west. There is a fee for those who wish to hop in a capsule to ride to the top of the Arch. Another unique experience in the area is getting up close and personal with the famous Budweiser Clydesdales. You can do so with a visit to Grant Farm (where they undergo best-in-class training programs) or a Budweiser Brewery VIP Clydesdale Tour.  

Get lost inside the City Museum for an entire day’s worth of eccentric curiosities. It is a mashup of an art installation, playground, and science center and is fun for all ages. The St. Louis Zoo is a free must-see. It sits at the top of the rankings with the San Diego Zoo for its habitats, cleanliness, and high caliber of animal care. Each May, they host the Make Tracks Annual Run-Walk Race to benefit the Children’s Hospital.  

A visit to St. Louis is not complete without eating Ted Drewes Frozen Custard, St. Louis Style Pizza, Gooey Butter Cake, Pork Steak, or a beloved microbrewery like Schlafly.

19. Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona  

Existing as the most visited national park in the USA (clocking in 4.53 million visitors in 2021 alone!), the Grand Canyon has long wowed visitors as one of the seven natural wonders of the world. May is one of the very best times to visit, as summer crowds have not yet arrived, and temperatures are warming but still pleasant. 

While the popular South Rim of the Grand Canyon is open year-round, access to the less visited (but equally beautiful) North Rim opens in mid-May. As such, if you’re interested in hiking the iconic rim-to-rim route and visiting in May — you are in luck! In May, reservations are relatively easy to secure, and Grand Canyon lodging tends to be more affordable. Unless you’re bound by the summer school vacation period, there are really no downsides to visiting the Grand Canyon in May. 

On the South Rim, explore Grand Canyon Village, which is home to several historical buildings, lodges, shops, and curios. Also be sure to hike a portion of the Rim Trail, which starts at Grand Canyon Village and ends at Hermits Rest. It offers fantastic views over the canyon and is relatively flat, with parts of the trail even being wheelchair accessible. If you want, take a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon for the best views of all and an experience you will never forget!

If you’re up for a challenge, take Bright Angel Trail down into the canyon, turning around at one of the rest stops or making the trek all the way to Indian Garden Campground to soak in the creek. If you choose the latter, the hike is nine miles round-trip and strenuous.

One of the best places to visit in the USA in May is Clearwater Beach . The weather is perfect in May — warm but not humid — and beautiful beaches abound, with options like Clearwater Beach, Honeymoon Island State Park, and Caladesi Island State Park. Enjoy some rest and relaxation, slide into a kayak, or jump on a jet ski. In Clearwater, the choices are endless.

21. Hocking Hills State Park, Ohio  

Easily one of the best places to visit in May in the USA, Hocking Hills is a stunning state park with a unique landscape that is created by weather-resistant Black Hand sandstone. So, expect to find impressive gorges, amazing cliffs, and incredible waterfalls. You’ll also love visiting in May since snowmelt from the surrounding mountains makes Cedar Falls look truly majestic.  

Additionally, May is the perfect time to enjoy some of the best things to do in Hocking Hills and explore Ash Cave, Old Man’s Cave, Rock House, Conkle’s Hollow, Cantwell Cliffs, and Whispering Cave Trail since the area is inundated with gorgeous wildflowers. You can also check out some of these indoor waterparks in Ohio to kick off the summer!

22. Saguaro National Park, Arizona  

Spring is the perfect time to visit Saguaro National Park — but the end of May offers something exceptional. If you don’t know, Saguaro National Park was set up to protect saguaro cacti. The Saguaro cactus is the largest cactus species in the US and is only found in the Sonoran Desert, where the park is located. 

So why visit Saguaro National Park in May? Because it’s when the iconic Saguaro cacti are in full bloom. These giant cacti put on a spectacular display of white and yellow flowers, making it a popular time to see the park. Not only are the Saguaro cacti in bloom, but May is also a great time to visit the park because the temperatures are still mild in the morning and evening, making it perfect for outdoor activities like hiking and wildlife viewing. 

During the mid-day heat, when hiking isn’t recommended, drive the scenic loop in your air-conditioned car to enjoy the views around the park. Or you can head to your Saguaro National Park hotel  for a siesta or to find a bite to eat in Tucson. El Taco Rustico is an excellent choice if you are in the mood for some tacos. However, remember to head back to the park for sunset, which is the perfect way to end the day.

23. Yosemite National Park, California  

Yosemite National Park is famous for its granite monoliths — El Capitan and Half Dome — and impressive waterfalls, which are in full flow in May as the snowmelt from the Sierra Nevada Mountains makes its way to Yosemite Valley. The most famous of the falls is Yosemite Falls — the tallest waterfall in North America — which people flock to see in spring when it is at its best and most powerful flow. 

But it’s not just waterfalls that attract travelers to Yosemite in May . There are many walking and hiking trails to explore, like the loop hike to Bridal Veil Falls. It is an accessible trail for all ages, even babies in pushchairs! The trailhead starts from the car park and proceeds along the riverbank, through the giant sequoia trees, and on to the mighty Bridal Veil Falls, where visitors will be amazed at the force and sound of the water cascading over the rock face.

So whether you’re seeking wildlife encounters, cultural happenings, an intrepid journey or a destination that won’t break the bank, there’ll be something in this month’s round-up sure to rouse your wanderlust.

Where are the best places to travel in May for relaxation? 

Samothraki, Greece 

Why now? To see an underexplored part of Greece. 

Lurking out in the northeast Aegean, Samothraki (Samothrace) also lurks off most international tourists’ radars – and is all the more alluring for it (though it’s popular among Greeks, so avoid July and August). The island is home to forests, streams and waterfalls – especially lush and full-flowing in spring – and Mt Fengári, the highest peak in the region, atop which it’s said Poseidon sat to watch the Trojan War. This makes it a natural-adventure playground, great for hiking, rafting and canyoning, as well as a place to chill (the best beaches are at Pachia Ammos, Vatis and Kipos). If the sea still feels chilly in May, go to Thermá, to dip in the village’s warm natural mineral springs.

Why now? Sun’s out, surf’s up.

Barbados is your grade-A tropical paradise, prime for beach lazing, sun-soaking and enjoying the sea breeze. But it’s also one of the best islands in the Caribbean for surfing, especially on its Atlantic-facing south and east coasts. Conditions are usually good and consistent from November right through to June; the advantage of May is that, while there might be a little more rain than in the preceding months, it’s still super sunny, and prices are lower, too. Top spots for catching waves include Freights Bay (good for beginners), South Point and Soup Bowl, a world-class wave near laid-back Bathsheba that has hosted international competitions. Great Smoky Mountains, USA

Why now? Glimpse a dazzling natural display, before the crowds arrive.

The Smokies are truly on fire this month. This spectacular subrange of the Appalachian chain, on the border of North Carolina and Tennessee , is home to huge numbers of Photinus carolinus (synchronous fireflies) and May to June is typically when they put on their magical en-masse mating display: a forest full of males flashing in unison. The USA’s most popular national park is quieter at this time. Take scenic drives via its misty ridges, hike wildflower-flush trails, look out for the diverse wildlife – from groundhogs and chipmunks to salamanders and black bears – and soak up the strong Southern Appalachian culture: log cabins, mills and churches built by early settlers have been preserved here. 

Newfoundland, Canada 

Why now? To watch icebergs float through the Atlantic. 

They call the waters off Newfoundland and Labrador  “Iceberg Alley.” In spring, great hunks of Arctic ice – mostly cast-offs from the glaciers of western Greenland – float down the Atlantic coast past Canada ’s easternmost province. They usually arrive in April and May, peaking from mid-May to June. You can stand onshore and watch these white titans drift by or board a boat for a closer look. Good spots include St Anthony, Twillingate, Bonavista and St John’s /Cape Spear. Seabirds also start to show up in May, while by the end of the month the first whales appear.

Damaraland, Namibia

Why now? To see local wildlife on warm days in green wilderness.

Even in a country as sparse as Namibia – the second-least-populated place on earth – Damaraland stands out as especially empty. Sprawling across north-central Namibia, it’s a wilderness of craggy mountains, dry riverbeds and desert-adapted animals, including elephants, rhinos and lions. May, when days are warm and dry and the landscape is still tinged green, is a great time to seek out these species as they gather around waterholes. Better still, the country is a pioneer in community-driven ecotourism, with large areas run as communal conservancies that empower local people.

Uzbekistan 

Why now? see the Silk Road showstopper in fine weather. 

Caravansaries. The Silk Road. Spices. There’s something undeniably romantic about travel here, which has been the cultural heart of Central Asia for millennia and one of our picks for Best in Travel 2024 . This is especially true of Uzbekistan ’s trio of historic cities – Samarkand , Bukhara  and  Khiva – which glitter with mosaic-tiled mausoleums, mosques and medressas (religious schools) that still speak of ancient times. Bukhara’s Silk and Spices Festival (late May) seeks to celebrate that legacy, showcasing the carpet weavers, wood carvers, musicians and artists still practicing traditional skills. Indeed, May is the perfect month to visit. Temperatures in the mid-70s°F (mid-20s°C) make for comfortable sightseeing, while tulips and apricot blossoms enliven the landscapes. Why now? Sail to the fjords in sunshine on the west coast. 

Hurtigruten ferries ply Norway ’s 1491-mile (2400 km) west coast, from southerly Bergen to Arctic Kirkenes year-round. They are a lifeline for people living along this wild, fjord-serrated seaboard – so they must depart, whatever the weather. That said, May to June is a good time to visit. The weather is generally mild and days are extraordinarily long. By mid-May, the sun doesn’t set at all in far-north Tromsø – which means you can watch the jaw-dropping scenery glide by all night long. Better weather and more light make it easier to hop off for activities, too. There are 34 ports of call; disembark to fish in the Lofoten Islands , meet Sami people at North Cape or hike near Geirangerfjord. Note that May is a month of festivals in pretty Bergen, so allow extra time here before you sail. You can even go on a budget if you know how.

Why now? Encounter marine giants and Maya monuments in dry weather. 

Diminutive Belize  packs a big punch. Only about 180 miles (290km) long, and with English as the official language, it’s a cinch to hop between its ancient Maya ruins, wildlife-rich tropical forests, living Maya communities and the cays and atolls of the world’s second-longest barrier reef, offering gorgeous beaches and fabulous snorkeling. You can see a lot of the country on a road trip  with no problem. May’s a sweet spot for weather and wildlife, when the sun shines, whale sharks cruise near Gladden Spit, and nesting green, hawksbill and loggerhead turtles lumber onto beaches on Glover’s Reef and Ambergris Caye . In the north, explore relatively little-visited temples at jungle-set sites such as Xunantunich and Lamanai ; today, the descendants of the ancient Maya who built these monuments live in villages around Toledo, where they welcome visitors to immersive homestays.

Memphis, USA

Why now? Music, grilled meat and Mississippi sunsets – without the mosquitos.

Memphis is less like a city, and more like a religion. People come to pay homage in the spiritual home of the blues, rock’n’roll, Elvis Presley and Memphis-style barbecue. In short, it’s a feast for ears, bellies and souls. Spring sees the Tennessee city at its tastiest: good weather, before summer’s sticky, buggy heat; plus the Memphis in May festival , incorporating the Beale Street Music Festival, the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, the Great American River Run and more. There are sites aplenty: take a tour of legendary Sun Studio ; visit the National Civil Rights Museum (partially housed inside the Lorraine Motel, where Martin Luther King Jr was shot in 1968); and, of course, make a pilgrimage to Graceland , Elvis’ uber-kitsch home. Wander through all of the great neighborhoods in Memphis to really get under the skin of this historical city.

Where are the best places to travel to in May for food and drink?

Murcia, Spain

Why now? To eat really well.

There isn’t really a bad time to visit Spain ’s Costa Cálida (the “Warm Coast”). But balmy, sunny May, with average highs of around 25°C (77°F), is a good time to get a real flavor of the place before summer crowds arrive. And the flavors are exceptional: surrounded by hills, vineyards, olive groves, fertile gardens and rich seas, the region is renowned for its quality meats, fruit, vegetables and fish. Regional specialities to look out for include caldero del mar menor , a cauldron-cooked rice stew traditionally made by fishermen from catch too small to sell; and paparajotes , battered and fried lemon leaves. Tapas trails can be followed in both the regional capital  Murcia and the historic port of Cartagena .

Bali, Indonesia 

Why now? Eat your way into the local culture.

Bali in May? Delicious. Dry, hot and sunny days, peak season crowds yet to descend and – as always – a relaxed vibe. Nowhere is the latter more true than in Ubud , the artsy, hippie highlands town with a good line of galleries and museums, ancient temples and a thriving food scene. Ubud, which is surrounded by lush forests, paddy fields and leafy plantations, has several world-class restaurants and fancy cocktail lounges as well as low-key food stalls and cafes serving Balinese specialities – gado gado salad, satay, injin porridge, babi guling (suckling pig) and more.
