Some people might argue that the humble clock has been made redundant with the arrival of the smartphone. But buying yourself the best alarm clock is still a solid investment, particularly if you’re trying to reduce screen time first thing in the morning.

In order to survive the smartphone revolution, alarm clocks have had to evolve. No longer is it good enough for them just to make a loud noise. Some of them are designed to rouse heavy sleepers with the kind of racket that even the most loud-mouthed of smartphones would struggle to imitate, and others even claim to help us get a better night’s sleep, like a good mattress can.

No matter what your sleeping habits are, there’s an alarm clock out there that’s perfect for you. You can be certain of one thing: these alarm clocks won’t let you sleep in when you need to be up and out.

How to choose the best alarm clock for you, what kind of alarm clock should i buy.

This is all down to personal preference. Do you want to wake up to your favourite breakfast radio station or would a traditional bell get you out of bed quicker? Some alarm clocks have come into the 21st century with “humane waking systems” – that’s where buzzers start off at a low volume and get louder. Meanwhile, more expensive alarms will illuminate your bedroom with a calming light to simulate the feeling of waking up under canvas at sunrise.

Do I want a mains-powered or battery-powered alarm clock?

An alarm clock’s key power source is definitely something you need to consider. Obviously, if you’re on your travels you’ll want long-lasting battery models that make it clear when the batteries need changing, while those looking for a clock to put on a bedroom table will prefer ones that run off mains power. It’s also worth bearing in mind that a power outage can disrupt a mains-powered alarm clock, so ones equipped with a battery backup are well worth paying a little extra for.

Can I use my own music to wake me up?

In addition to the standard radio and buzzer options, some alarm clocks allow users to dock a media player such as a smartphone to play content from the device, or connect a USB stick, for a customised way to start the day.

What kind of display do I go for?

You can easily find digital alarm clocks with LCD and LED displays these days, as well as retro designs with the traditional clock face and analogue quartz technology. For those of you who opt for a digital display, you’ll want to look for a display that’s easy on the eyes and has an acceptable brightness level, which will vary from device to device – bear in mind, though, that those with automatic brightness levels will stop your alarm clock lighting up your bedroom at night.

Some alarm clocks move beyond standard displays and project the time onto the wall or ceiling for a larger, more easily readable display. If you want to be able to check the time without leaning over the bedside table, these are a great choice.

What about a smart clock?

With smart TV sticks, smart speakers and smart lighting everywhere you look, it’s no surprise that even alarm clocks are getting smart these days. Some manufacturers, such as Amazon and Lenovo, are building smart speakers or displays that double up as alarm clocks, waking you up while giving you all the usual info, music, radio and smart home controls. Of course, you might not be comfortable with Alexa listening to you in the bedroom, let alone catching your early-morning hair with a built-in camera.

If you’re taken by the Sunrise Alarm, it might also be worth checking out Lumie’s Bodyclock range of wake-up lights. These are a bit more sophisticated than the Sunrise Alarm, but they’re backed up by years of research into treating the symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD). 2. lexon flip+: best compact alarm clock.

This lightweight and minimalist clock is unique in that, to turn the alarm off in the morning, you simply need to flip the whole thing over (or just give the top a tap to snooze). The display will orient itself so that everything is the right way up whether the alarm is switched on or off, but there’s no mistaking which is which, thanks to the bold ‘on’ and ‘off’ lettering on either side.

The clock on the Flip+ uses radio technology to automatically set the time itself, though you do still have the option to set the time manually, which is easy enough. For the automatic setup to work, you only need to ensure the switch in the battery compartment is set to ‘on’, but you should note that, according to the manual, it can take up to seven minutes for the clock to receive a signal. During our testing, this took around four minutes and we still had to manually fiddle with time zone settings, but it’s a useful feature.

Another major benefit of the Flip+ is that its dinky size – just a little larger than your palm – and its light weight make it a great alarm clock for travelling.

3. newgate charlie bell: best-value twin bell alarm clock.

If you’re after that classic alarm clock look (and sound), then Newgate’s compact Charlie Bell clock is a good option. The matte metal casing comes in a variety of colours and the clock face – which has a more modern, minimalist design – is clear and easy to read.

The build quality might feel a little bit on the cheap side but, then again, this becomes a minor complaint when you take into account the clock’s relatively low price.

The alarm itself is easy to set: simply adjust the hand to point to the time you want it to ring. That said, it’s worth pointing out that it can be rather tricky to set the alarm with to-the-minute precision.

Inevitably, the rather harsh ringing sound of an alarm clock such as this won’t suit everyone, but heavy sleepers can rest assured knowing that they’ll be waking up on time in the morning.

4. newgate wideboy: best alarm clock for vintage style.

Another entry from Newgate, the Art Deco-style Wideboy (yes, that’s really its name) looks as nice as a desk clock as it does on a bedside table. Its bold face is very stylish and the smooth, silent movement of the second hand is lovely.

You set the alarm in the same way as the Charlie Bell alarm clock, above, which means that if you want to wake up at a time that isn’t on the hour then you’re faced with the same lack of precision. But when you consider this is how many traditional alarm clocks have always been set, it’s a little unfair to make a big deal of it.

What’s more troubling is the feel of the Wideboy – its lightweight casing is made of a plastic that seems cheap and flimsy. If this was reflected in the price of the clock, it wouldn’t be too much of an issue but it’s a bit harder to justify how much more expensive it is over the Charlie Bell.

Nevertheless, the Wideboy doesn’t look quite as cheap as it feels – as we’ve already said, it looks great – and in our testing, the alarm worked very well, unleashing a beeping that isn’t quite as loud as the metallic racket of the Charlie Bell, but should suffice for most people.

5. geemarc sonic bomb with bed shaker: best alarm clock for heavy sleepers.

You can set the alarm to sound only or vibrate only – with both, you might suffer sensory overload – and it features a 9V battery backup should the electricity cut out in the middle of the night. It also gives you the option to set the alarm duration, from turning off after just a minute to sounding for almost a solid hour – try sleeping through that – and you can set the snooze between one minute and half an hour.

Overall, this is a great, easy-to-set-up alarm clock, with our only niggle being that we wish there was a slightly bigger button to turn the alarm off.

6. amazon echo show 5 (3rd gen, 2023): best alexa smart clock.

The Amazon Echo Show 5 is many things. This smart device with built-in Alexa lets you display photos, take video calls, control compatible smart home devices and stream (limited) content. Of course, it wouldn’t be included in this roundup if it couldn’t be used as an alarm clock too, and the Echo Show’s “Sunrise Effect” brightens the screen gently before your alarm goes off, to help ease you into the day.

Though the 3rd generation Echo Show 5 is only a relatively small improvement from the previous 2021 model, it still received a price hike. So, if you’d rather opt for something cheaper, you can still find a refurbished 2nd generation Echo Show 5 for significantly less.

Unlike other alarms, it doesn’t play a loop of music or emit a regular series of beeps that you can quickly learn to sleep through. Instead, it plays a garbled, arrhythmic set of beeps, buzzes and pings that are simply too awful to ignore.

There are only a finite number of ways to display the time, yet these guys have come up with something quite novel: this uber modern-looking clock cleverly shows you the time by lighting up letters to write out the time for you in words. This then changes at five-minute intervals, and there are four dots to represent the minutes in between.

There are different finishes available, which attach via magnets. So, if you wind up regretting your initial pick, you can purchase a new front cover in a new colour. There’s an alarm with a snooze function, an automatic dimmer and a night touch mode if you prefer no light at all – just a quick tap lights up the clock for two seconds to tell you the time.

The downside? It costs a pretty penny.

This beautifully simple alarm clock from British brand Newgate sports a tactile silicone petrol blue finish and a distinctive design. Blending a number of styles, it features a mid-century inspired graphic dial. The unusual podium shape has a space age feel to it. This alarm clock is powered by 1 AA battery (not supplied) and setup is child’s play. Simply set the time using the dial on the back, pop in the battery and you’re in business.

The sole alarm is set using a second dial on the back followed by an on/off switch. Keeping things simple, there’s no snooze button and only one alarm. You can’t alter the volume or style of the beeping alarm but we found it was enough to wake us up without being too jarring. And while some might enjoy the white noise of a ticking clock, the Dome is completely silent so it won’t disturb you. While features are limited, this cool little alarm clock delivers everything it promises. It comes with a bargain price tag and will look amazing on your bedside table.

Billed as ‘the original wake-up light’, Lumie’s latest effort sports a round design with an attractive frosted glass dome. It looks good even when it’s not lit up. The lamp mimics the rising sun, with the aim of regulating your sleep cycle for a better night’s rest. You can choose from a daily or weekly alarm and if you want sound to accompany the lamp, you're in luck. There’s a DAB radio or a choice of 20 wakeup sounds including birds, crickets and traffic.

The unit also doubles as a Bluetooth speaker, with pretty decent audio. Then there’s a USB port for charging your mobile device if you can’t bear to be parted from it while you sleep. The alarm clock offers a sunset mode to help you unwind before bed, along with a low blue light setting especially for bedtime. The light level settings for sunrise and sunset can be tweaked, as can their duration. This enables you to find the perfect wake-up and bedtime process to suit you.

The unit relies on mains power, but it’ll keep time for 30 minutes if there’s a power cut. It will also save your settings so you won’t have to programme it all again. The wake-up lamp works a treat, and really does feel like a more relaxing way to start the day. However, the control buttons and on-screen menus are incredibly fiddly and not very intuitive, so it takes a while to master the settings. While it’s not as slick to use as we’d expect at this price, the Lumie is a sound investment if you want to up your chances of getting a good night's sleep.

3. Lexon Flip LR130

For something a little different, the tiny Lexon Flip is only slightly bigger than a pack of cards. This makes it a good choice if you need something portable. The fun design is available in a wide range of colours to match every bedroom. The time and alarm are both set with simple buttons on the back, with the alarm time displayed in the bottom right corner of the screen.

To turn the alarm on and off, you simply flip the unit over so ‘on’ or ‘off’ is showing on the top. It really couldn’t be simpler. Powered by 2 AAA batteries (not included), the clock features a five-minute snooze that’s activated by tapping the button on top of the unit. This will also turn on a nightlight for a few seconds if you want to check the time when it’s dark without disturbing your rest too much.

The alarm is rather loud and urgent, so there’s no slow, relaxing wake-up call here. There’s also no option for adjusting the volume or setting multiple alarms. With an unusual ‘flip’ method of turning the alarm on and off, this colourful clock is fun and functional, but not very flexible.

A welcome update to the classic radio alarm clock, this compact device sports a neat design. You can choose from five different colourways: gold, mint, navy, white and grey. You can choose to wake up to an alarm tone or your favourite radio station (the Rise S supports DAB, DAB+ and FM). It's also possible to set three different alarms, which is handy if your partner gets up at a different time.

Alarms can be set as daily or for weekdays or weekends, or just once - and you can also adjust the volume. Both the tone and radio alarm start out at a low level, gradually increasing to the chosen maximum volume, for a gentle wake-up call. Simply press any of the buttons in the back row on top of the radio to stop the alarm. There’s also a really handy flexible snooze function, which can be set for anything between five and 59 minutes.

You even get a countdown clock on the display. And to avoid disturbing your sleep, the CrystalVue display packs auto-dimming. The Rise S relies on mains power and packs impressive sound. It includes a USB port for charging your mobile and a headphone socket, plus it works as a Bluetooth speaker. Overall, it’s a flexible, reliable timekeeper that’s easy to use, looks good and won’t put too much of a dent in your bank account.

5. Roberts Ortus 3

The Ortus 3 alarm clock has a retro feel to it, but the huge numbers on the display give it a contemporary twist. Available in a black or white finish, this mains-powered radio alarm clock features DAB, DAB+ and FM tuners. There is the option to set two alarms with the choice of a buzzer or the radio. Both start at a low volume, getting gradually louder.

The click dial on the top panel makes it really simple to whizz through setting the alarms. Meanwhile, manual switches on the side make it easy to toggle the alarms on and off without having to set them up from scratch. You can set the alarms for weekends, weekdays, daily or just once. The snooze timer can be set to five, 10 (the default), 15 or 20 minutes or even disabled completely and you can touch any button to snooze the alarm.

You can adjust the screen dimmer to avoid interrupting your sleep, choosing from, low, mid, high or off. The time lights up at the touch of any button before fading to the chosen setting. The sound quality from the speakers is good, though we found that it took a while to find the perfect spot for a radio signal.

Alarm clock extras include a USB socket on the back for topping up your smartphone’s juice while you sleep, plus a headphone socket. The fuss-free Ortus 3 delivers a reliable wake-up experience with a touch of flexibility. Best of all, it has possibly the largest and most easy-to-read digital clock face we’ve ever seen.

6. Gingko Cube Click Clock

This unusual cube-shaped alarm clock comes in a range of colours, including a few different faux wood finishes. You can choose the hue of the LED lights too. The unit is powered by 3 AAA batteries (not included), but it also comes with a power cable. However, you’ll need to supply your own USB-compatible charger plug if you want to power it from the mains.

The clock face appears seemingly out of nowhere, displaying the time, date and temperature. The idea is that you click your fingers and the clock face lights up. A tap to the top of the unit or the bedside table should also produce the same result. However, we could only get the time to appear by clapping very loudly or tapping the top quite firmly, though the latter didn’t always work.

There are three alarms, which can be set to either weekday or weekend. There is also a five-minute snooze that can be activated a maximum of five times in a row. The controls on the back are not particularly intuitive and the instruction booklet can be a little confusing. Overall, this alarm clock looks chic, and the idea is great, but the execution needs a lot of work.

Sporting a distinctively unique shape, this wake-up lamp from Philips looks great, if a bit unusual, in any bedroom. The default sunrise setting, which progresses from a soft red, to orange followed by a bright yellow, takes 30 minutes. However, you can tweak this to suit. You can choose to have no wake-up sound, or opt for FM radio (there’s no DAB here), or sound effects. These include the usual suspects such as birdsong, or plus slightly weird new age music, if that’s your thing.

The sound starts quietly and gradually increases, for a genuinely soothing way of starting your morning. You have the option of setting two separate alarms while tapping the top of the lamp activate snooze for nine minutes. The touch controls are really simple to use, even without the help of the instruction manual. You can alter the intensity of the display or turn it off altogether — just tap it to see the time.

The sunset mode, which can also be paired with relaxation sounds like rain or ocean waves, is a brilliant way to wind down at the end of the day. The device also offers light-guided breathing exercises. Tapping the top of the unit transforms it into a handy night light. The device also features a power backup which will preserve the time and your alarm for a maximum of eight hours.

This Philips alarm clock offers a USB port for charging your phone, and an aux input for plugging in your own music. However, you can’t use it as your wakeup sound. The seamless touch control and soothing lamp make this alarm clock worthy of your hard-earned cash.

How to buy the best alarm clock for you

What’s the best way to wake up?

This comes down to personal preference, but we can probably agree that a gradual awakening is better than being startled by an obnoxiously loud buzzer. Your alarm needs to be loud enough to actually wake you up, without actually disturbing the neighbours.

Research shows that listening to music has a positive affect on the brain, so waking up to the radio is a good way to start the day. It’s also worth exploring wake-up lights which are designed to mimic the sunrise. This'll wake you gradually and in a more natural way. Similarly, many alarm clocks now offer a buzzer or radio alarm that starts quietly and gradually increases in volume for a gentler effect.

Can’t I just use the alarm clock on my phone?

Of course you can! But the trouble is, having a smartphone next to your bed could well be disturbing your sleep. Numerous studies have linked the light from mobile devices to troubled sleep patterns. That’s because the light from the screen interrupts your ‘circadian rhythm’. This is your body’s internal clock that deals with your sleep cycles.

This very compact alarm clock – it measures just 5.6”x2.9”x1.9” – is a clever but of design, and is a very simple clock that does what you want it to do. Large, bright red LED numbers illuminate the time throughout, so it is very easy to read at a glance at night, and the brightness can be adjusted to suit your personal preference. Make a note that this one is mains powered, so if you’re travelling abroad with it you will need to buy an adapter for use.

The alarm function is easy to set and has a handy snooze feature – there is no button as such, you just press anywhere on the top of the clock, so that’s great for when you’re still half asleep! The snooze function is practical and the button easy to find, so you can have your extra few minutes with no problem. This one comes with battery included, so is ready to go, and is very easy to set up. Probably the neatest design we’ve reviewed so far, it’s also the cheapest at a little less than £10.

One unusual feature of this model is that it also features a countdown timer; we’re not sure what use this is on an alarm clock, but it’s there anyway! It has a full calendar showing month, date and day, and is easy to set up and use. The only downside is there is no light for night use, so you need the room to be light enough to see it. That price we liked? Less than five quid, with battery included, so it’s well worth a look if you are looking for a very cheap alarm clock.

6: Casio Compact Digital Alarm Clock

The screen displays only the time – albeit in big, bold easy to read letters – and there is a manually selected backlight that allows you to read it easily at night. The beep style alarm is also rather old fashioned, although you do get the snooze function that is a necessity with these items. There’s not much more we can say about this one bar it’s rather ugly, and not as funky as some of the other options, but it is only a tenner, and does come with a battery included.

7: HITO Atomic Radio Controlled Alarm Clock

The big digit display is very easy to see and looks great when the orange backlight is on, plus you also get various other functions. These are the usual day and date, temperature and – unusually – humidity, and a snooze function as standard. It takes two AA batteries, which are not included, and is an interesting model in many ways. It should be noted that this one operates on UK time only, as it is tied to the UK standard radio signals, but as we said, it is very, very accurate. At more than 17 quid it’s pricier than the others, but what price is that to pay for the bragging rights to getting your time from an atomic clock?

8: Casio PT-10D Digital Alarm Clock

At least the snooze button – which doubles as the light button – is big and reachable, but you only get one function, which is the time (plus the alarm, of course, which is the whole point). We don’t see the point of a clock that is stuck firmly in its original era, as things have moved forward. At ten quid, we also consider it expensive, when compared to some of the more stylish models here. Not for us, I’m afraid.

With additional features including 24 hour clock, a temperature display, calendar and date functions, this seems like a pretty standard alarm clock, but add in the very useful world time zone index, and it becomes an extremely useful tool for international travellers. It stands up nicely when opened and really feels like a quality item, and at less than 12 pounds is worth a chance. You should add this one to your list if you travel abroad, as it could come in very useful indeed. The single cell-type battery is included in the price.

Features also include temperature, date, day and time, and an ascending and pleasant alarm sound, and is guaranteed completely silent – when not sounding the alarm! This one has a very interesting feature in the shape of a light sensor; when switched on, the backlight will not come on during daylight, but will when the room gets darker. If this light would bother you, then you can turn it on and off manually, too. That may not be this clocks best feature, however: it’s a multi-function digital alarm clock for less than six quid. Unless you need a clock for travelling, this is a very good buy.
