How to Get a Belize Tourist Card

Thinking about staying in Belize for a while, perhaps eventually relocating to Belize , but not ready to commit to a long-term residency process? The Belize tourist card, also known as a visitor’s visa, might be a good fit for you.

The Belize visitor’s visa lets you live in Belize (and fall in love with everything the country has to offer) on a monthly basis.

U.S. and Canadian citizens can even visit Belize without a visa for up to 30 days if they are travelling as tourists. After that, you must obtain a visa and renew it for US$100.00 every month.

Monthly renewals after the first six months will cost US$100.00 per month. The only downside here is having to renew your visa every month. But the process is quite simple and hassle-free. Simply visit a local immigration office to get a stamp before your 30 days are up. If you’re in Belize City, the local immigration office is an 18-minute drive from the airport.

Click here to find the nearest Belize immigration office.

Permanent residents of many countries can obtain a tourist card without applying in advance. Countries, where this is the case, include those that are part of the CARICOM, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Norway, Venezuela, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Colombia, Guatemala, Brazil, and Japan.

Recently visa-free: Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, Paraguay, and Morocco

Residents of other nations need to apply in advance for a tourist card before they travel to Belize. Find out if your country of nationality requires a visa here .

Keep in mind that you’ll be asked to hold proof of onward/return flights.

Once in hand, a Belize visitor’s visa allows you to travel everywhere in our country, as well as buy or rent property. Remember that you’re prohibited from working according to Belize immigration law. And you might need to show proof of sufficient funds when renewing the tourist card. Check out the links to get started.

Belize Visa

Belize visa immigration department.

All visitors to Belize must present a valid passport before entering the country. The exception is for cruise ship passengers. They do not require an entry visa or a passport for that matter. Belize being small British Commonwealth country in North America with easy access to the U.S.A. and Canada, is well aware of potential illegal migrants from Asia and Africa trying to get into the country with the intention of using it as a stepping stone to head up north. As such, it has in place specif protocols to deter this activity.

Entry Requirements

Driver’s licenses and birth certificates are not approved travel documents and cannot be used to enter the country. Visitors must be in possession of a passport valid for at least 3 months after the date of arrival and a return ticket with sufficient funds to cover their stay.If you decide you really like Belize and would like to stay longer, you can request a one-month extension from the Immigration and Nationality Department. Prospective immigrants renew every month or eventually decide to apply for Belize Permanent Residency .Visas for Belize Citizens of most countries do not require a visa to enter Belize. (See below. If your country of nationality is not listed, you need to apply for a visa.)

Can US permanent residents travel to Belize without a visa?

Belize has exemptions for Belize Entry Visa for visits not exceeding 30 days if you hold a valid multiple entry visa or Permanent Residence Card from the United States of America, if you hold a valid multiple entry Schengen visa or if you hold a valid multiple entry visa or Permanent Residence Card from Canada

As of 2018, individuals with valid U.S.A. or Schengen Treaty Visas in their passports, as well as individuals with valid U.S. residency, do not require a visa to travel to Belize. Related Article: Is Belize A Good Place For Americans To Retire?

Belize Visa Updates

Note: As of 27 January 2022, the visa free privileges for Venezuela, Ecuador and the Dominican Republic have been rescinded. “Cabinet gave its approval for the Ministry of Immigration to impose visa requirements for nationals of Venezuela, Ecuador and the Dominican Republic.”

2023 Update: Visa restrictions were put in place on March 2023 against Jamaicans and Haitians. This follows increasing immigration and police busts indicating Belize is being used as a conduit for mass human smuggling to the United States of America and Canada: “After a thorough discussion on the increasing number of visitors who are using Belize as a transit country to reach the United States, Cabinet determined that Belize will invoke Article 226 (a) of the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas, which will allow for the Minister of Immigration to immediately impose a visa requirement for Haitians wishing to visit Belize and to require Jamaican nationals to provide evidence of fully paid non-refundable hotel reservations prior to boarding flights to Belize. In addition, a ministerial task force was set up to address the rampant smuggling occurring in this regard.” – Belize Government Cabinet Brief 30 March 2023.

See:   Who visits Belize and Belize’s tourism statistics

Tourists are given a 30-day stay, after which a Belize Visitor’s Permit Extension can be applied for in one-month increments for up to six months. There is no entry fee for Belize but there is a mandatory departure fee . The fee will differ based on whether you leave Belize through its international airport or land borders with Guatemala or Mexico.

Non-visa nationals

Except for a few countries, most individuals don’t require a tourist visa to visit Belize. Here is a list of countries and territories that don’t need a visa for entry:

  • European Union Member States (EU)
  • Caribbean Community Member States (CARICOM)
  • United States of America & Territories
  • South Africa
  • Switzerland

Commonwealth citizens

Most Commonwealth citizens don’t require a visa to enter Belize with the EXCEPTION of a few countries. They include:

  • West African Countries

If you don’t see your country here please consult with your embassy. And if you need to apply for a visa, visit belizeembassyusa.mfa.gov.bz/consular-services .

There is no entry fee for Belize. However, there is a departure tax that is used for infrastructure development, airport/ border maintenance or expansion, and national conservation efforts.

Belize’s airport exit fee is US$73.50 for tourists and BZ$35 for Belizean citizens or residents. At land borders, the fee is US$20 for tourists only.

As of July 12, 2022, Belize has removed all public health measures at its points of entry (land and sea). Travelers do not need a vaccination card/ immunization record or need to provide a COVID-19 test. Masks, curfew, and health insurance rules have also been lifted.

Previously, staying at a Gold Standard Hotel was mandatory. This is no longer the case – tourists are just recommended to stay there. However, by now, most Belize hotels and vacation rentals (over 95%) have gone through the country’s Gold Standard hotel program.

Tourists can stay for up to 30 days in Belize. For those that desire to stay for longer than one month, a Visitor’s Permit Extension , which is given in one-month increments, is required. Visitor permits can be obtained from Belize immigration offices throughout the country at a fee of US-$100.00 for every extended period of 30 days for up to six months.

When entering Belize, international tourists must have proof of their intent to depart Belize, such as a return ticket or onward ticket ( e.g. airline ticket, pre-purchased bus ticket, or proof of passage on a cruise ship). This includes having a valid passport for no less than 30 days after the intended period of stay.

Along with a passport, children under 18 years must have a notarized letter of parental consent if they are traveling without one or both of their parents.

Pets must be accompanied by a veterinary certificate issued by a vet from the country of origin and an import permit from the Belize Agricultural Health Authority ( BAHA ).

Visitors driving or boating into Belize must secure a temporary importation permit at their point of entry from Mexico or Guatemala. Vehicle/vessel permits are valid for 30 days and must be extended every 30 days.

One of the best aspects of having dual citizenship is that you can use it to your advantage when it comes to immigration requirements. So use the passport that allows you to travel more freely .

Belizeans that have dual citizenship should use their Belize passport to enter and depart Belize so as to avoid any hassle or potential tourist fees.

Yes, there is a large ex-pat community in Belize, in particular in the islands and coastal towns. To stay in Belize long-term, visitors must go through the process of acquiring permanent residency. To be eligible to apply for permanent residence, individuals must stay in Belize for one year and have continuously paid legal residence fees.

Belize Entry Requirements for Non-Tourists (Expats and Residents)

  • by James Dyde
  • May 30, 2021
  • Belize , Daily Life , Travel

What are the Belize entry requirements for residents and expats? They’re different from the rules applying to tourists. In this article, we highlight the different categories of travelers to Belize and outline the individual guidelines.

Since Belize opened on October 1 , there’s been a lot of talk about tourist protocols. You know, gold standard this, gold standard that.

Download the app, do this, go that. Stay in your hotel, don’t go there, don’t do this. It seems we’re pretty clear on tourists coming to Belize right now. At least as clear as we can be in this super-complicated new world we find ourselves in.

But what about citizens and residents entering Belize? We don’t hear so much about them. I guess it’s understandable. Tourism, after all, represents some 40% of Belize’s economy. Belize desperately needs to kickstart that again while juggling with managing the virus.

Great to see #Belize joining Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala by allowing all travelers in to enjoy its beautiful country. Panama set to do the same on Oct 12. Best of luck to you all. Costa Rica, are you watching? https://t.co/F6mxAhm10J — CentralAmericaLiving (@VidaAmerica) October 1, 2020

Still, citizens and residents need to come and go too. So let’s go over some of the rules for them.

Travelers entering Belize are now classified into the following four groups:

  • Foreign Tourists
  • Belizean Citizens & Residents
  • Business Travelers
  • Foreign Second Home Owners/Long Stay Non-Nationals

We’ll put aside the foreign tourists. Most expats are either Citizens & Residents or Second Home Owners/Long Stay Non-Nationals.

And it’s a little different coming into Belize for them. For a start, you don’t need to wear a wristband for your stay. That’s gotta be a good thing, right? I mean what’s all that about in the first place? But I digress…

Belize Iz Open! Check out our most updated traveler procedures below. #belizeizopen #travelbelize pic.twitter.com/kmED2j1egn — Belize Tourism Board (@belizevacation) October 6, 2020

Citizens/Residents:

Belize citizens and residents need to download the Belize Health App , the same as tourists. They also need to take a PCR COVID test within 72 hours of boarding their plane. If they can’t take the test, they will have to take one upon arrival in Belize at their own cost (US$50).

Citizens/residents arriving with a negative test or receiving all-clear with their airport test can leave the airport and go home, where they have to quarantine for ten days. Once those ten days are up, they need “clearance” from the Ministry of Health before getting on with their lives.

Presumably at this point they can get rid of the health app.

Citizens/residents who get a positive result from their on-arrival COVID tests need to quarantine at an approved hotel for a minimum of 14 days at their own expense.

For the sake of clarity, the government deems “residents” as foreigners with permanent residency, work visas, and expats with QRP residency (Qualified Retired Persons).

You’ve decided to move to Belize but don’t want to fall foul of the immigration laws. Luckily they are straightfoward, even if time-consuming. Here’s a guide to living legally and getting residency in Belize. #Belize #expatlife https://t.co/3GGRBllWFx pic.twitter.com/4Kvd5Inzbg — CentralAmericaLiving (@VidaAmerica) April 12, 2019

Foreign Second Home Owners/Long Stay Non-Nationals:

All other foreigners who aren’t tourists count as “Foreign Second Home Owners/Long Stay Non-Nationals”.

It’s interesting how Belize classifies long-stay visitors without residency in this way. Other countries in Central America don’t. You’re either a tourist or a resident.

Long stay visitors to Costa Rica , for example, struggle with the tailored-for-vacationers insurance requirements . It’s great how Belize recognizes – and makes exceptions for – those who spend a lot of time or own homes in the country.

Anyway, if you own a home in Belize or classify as a “Long Stay Non-National”, your entry requirements differ from citizens and residents.

First, you need to apply to visit Belize. You do this at www.COVID19.bz . Here, you must submit proof you own or rent a home in Belize.

Then you download the Belize Health App and take a PCR COVID test within 72 hours of flying. Again, travelers without a test will get one upon arrival for US$50.

Like citizens/residents, a positive test upon arrival means at least 14 days quarantine at your own expense in an approved hotel.

Home owners/long stay non-nationals with negative results or 72-hour negative result in hand can leave the airport and go home, where they must quarantine for 10 days.

Like citizens/residents, once those ten days are up, they need “clearance” from the Ministry of Health to end their quarantine and get on with their lives.

Everything You Need To Know About The Belize Health App https://t.co/FVwvCIhfRz — Breaking Belize News (@belizemedia) October 13, 2020

Business Travelers:

Business travelers to Belize also have their own classification.

For the government, a business traveler is someone with business concerns in Belize, but who doesn’t necessarily live in Belize or have a work permit in Belize.

Business travelers also need to apply for permission to visit at www.COVID19.bz . Here they need to provide proof of their investment(s) in Belize and/or the reason for travel. They also need to provide their planned itinerary while in Belize.

The next step is to download the Belize Health App and take their COVID test within 72 hours of travel.

As business travelers are assumed to not live in Belize, they need to book Gold Standard accommodation like tourists have to. If a business traveler owns property in Belize, they can stay there, as long as they provide proof of ownership.

Business travelers arriving without the COVID test will get one at the airport, for US$50. A negative result means they can go about their business. A positive result means 14 days quarantine in an approved hotel.

All business travelers need to adhere to their submitted itinerary and use approved transportation with a trained driver.

So you may have heard about the new four-step system for travel to #Belize now that its open, with to COVID-19 trip measures. Here are the details! https://t.co/nJYVw3rFf8 pic.twitter.com/1CUtqareTU — Caribbean Culture + Lifestyle: Belize (@caribbeanbelize) October 11, 2020

Yesterday, an expat posted an interesting account of entering Belize as a “Long Stay Non National”, which is worth reading.

US expat Laura Monfort posted the following on the Belize Expats Facebook group about her partner’s experience entering Belize:

“For those wanting or needing to leave and then come back to Belize now that the airports are open:

“My partner recently had to go back to the states to see an ill relative. He left on October 2nd and returned October 11th.

“Before leaving he called the MOH (Ministry of Health) as recommended here to get permission. They said none of that was necessary so he didn’t get anything on paper or fill out anything. No issues leaving.

“Returning, he downloaded the tracking app ahead of time and opted to get the COVID test at the airport. His flight landed at 12:03pm. They separated the tourists into a different line and gave them a green band to wear for the duration of their trip.

“For those living in Belize, even without official residency, you go in the other line.

“They will ask you multiples times if you are a resident so say yes and yes and yes.

“They ask if you own or rent. If you rent they want to know your landlord’s name and phone number. He had a copy of our property agreement, but since they were fine with the name and number, he didn’t bother with that. Anyway, you line up for your COVID test, wait about 25 minutes for your result, and if negative go through immigration.

“After knowing his ride was there, he asked to leave the airport and just had to tell them that yes, someone from his household was picking him up and he walked out.

“We were driving away by 12:45pm and he is required to stay home for 10 days. Easy peasy apple squeezy.”

Make of that account what you will, but it certainly provides insight on what to expect when arriving in Belize as a non-tourist. Straight from the horse’s mouth, so-to-speak.

It’s also worth noting there’s been some confusion on social media about the Ministry of Health “clearance” required after ten days of quarantine.

It seems that after you complete your ten days quarantine, you don’t hear from the Ministry of Health at all to “clear you”.

The consensus is that it’s done on the honor system and you don’t need anyone to give you clearance. If you’re symptom-free after ten days, you can get on with your life, and presumably delete the app.

The best bet is to call the Ministry of Health for confirmation of what to do.

Belize entry requirements

The best way to summarize getting into Belize as an expat or non-tourist is like this:

If you’re not a citizen or don’t have legal residency, the government needs proof of where you’re staying or what you’re doing. This is why home owners/long stay non-nationals and business travelers need to seek permission beforehand.

Citizens and residents don’t need to seek this permission.

As with all aspects of travel during this pandemic, protocols and rules can change on a dime. But right now, we hope this this helps expats and residents trying to get to Belize.

Passport: Visitors to Belize must possess a passport valid for a period of minimum 30 days if the person is not travelling in transit to a third country that requires the six months’ validity and is returning to country of origin, immediately after visiting Belize (primarily North Americans). For visitors driving/boating into Belize from Guatemala or Mexico, a temporary importation permit must be secured at the point of entry. Vehicle/vessel permits are valid for 30 days.

Entry Requirements & Protocols for Traveling to Belize

From passport and visa stipulations to other crucial mandates, the entry requirements for Belize offer detailed guidance on duration of stay permissions along with a plethora of other protocols intended to streamline your travel into this beautiful Central American country .

Passport and Visa Requirements

Going to Belize requires you have a valid passport with you. This passport must stay valid for as long as you are in Belize .

Most people from the United States, Canada, EU countries, and CARICOM countries don’t need a visa before they go; as people from these countries receive an automatic 30 day Visa upon entering.

Traveling with kids needs a letter that says its okay from the parent not going on the trip. This letter has to be notarized to validate it.

You don’t need any COVID or other test to enter Belize, so don’t worry about that part. You also won’t need a test when leaving Belize either.

You also don’t need any special shots nor vaccines to enter Belize.

These rules make going to Belize easy for most people!

In Belize, you can stay for up to 30 days as a visitor. You don’t need to get approval before you arrive. If you want to extend your stay after 30 days, you’ll need to head over to the Immigration and Nationality Department office to renew your visa .

There is an Immigration department in Belize City, Belmopan , and other large towns.

The Visa Renewal fee range from $25 USD for just one month up till six months of extension. If it exceeds half a year, then immigration officials start charging around $50 USD per month.

  • A Tourist Visa .
  • A stay permit if you plan to visit longer than 30 days.
  • An okay from health officials if you have HIV/AIDS.
  • If your trip involves kids, you may need documents on International Parental Child Abduction rules .

Continue reading for all you need to know about protecting your health while enjoying this tropical paradise.

Relevant Travel Health Notices

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) sends out travel health notices . These help people know about any health risks in places they want to visit. Right now, Belize has a Level 2 travel advisory .

This is due to high crime rates in the area. Violent crimes like sexual assault and murder are common there. This is true even in tourist areas where lots of visitors go, but especially true in the south side of Belize City.

Routine Vaccines and Pre-travel Vaccines

Belize does not require any vaccines or shots for you to travel here. However, here are a few items to consider before traveling to Belize.

  • Get routine vaccines .
  • Pre – travel vaccines are good too.
  • There’s no need for yellow fever shot in Belize.
  • Typhoid shot is good if you’re going to risky places.
  • Mosquitoes carry diseases like chikungunya, avoid their bites! Make sure to bring along mosquito repellent.

  • Stick to busy restaurants where turnover of food will be higher.

Insect Bite Prevention

In Belize, mosquitos may carry diseases . These critters may make you sick if they bite you. Here are ways to stay safe:

The hospitals in Belize offer basic medical care . If you get very sick, you might need to go to a different country for help . There may not be many doctors or nurses in small towns or the countryside.

Some people choose to buy extra health insurance that will pay if they have to fly to another country for treatment. When packing, always bring enough medicine for your trip . It should stay in its original bottle with a note from your doctor saying it is needed.

Belize Border Crossing & Tourist Card Information

the belizean flag

By Nathan Swartz

Crossing in and out of Belize is fairly simple.

Not as easy as Mexico, perhaps, where our crossing at Mexicali via the California / Baja California border was nothing more than an unmanned “stop” where we could have shot straight to Cabo without ever knowing we needed a tourist card.

Here are the basics of what you need to know about crossing the border near Chetumal MX and Guatemala, as well as renewing your Tourist Card in Belize without leaving the country.

Chetumal to Belize Border Crossing Requirements

When you leave Mexico, you need to do the following to properly “check out” of the country.

  • Stop at the custom’s booth with your passports, tourist permits, and Temporary Vehicle Import Permit, if you’ve got a car.
  • You’ll show the attendants in the booth your passport and tourist permit. They may ask you for the receipt showing you paid the fee which is required to get the tourist permit, which seems shady if you entered via the US border, because they make you pay the tax there and then. However, they don’t make you pay the same tax to get this tourist permit when you enter from Belize. Why? No clue, but they don’t.
  • If you’re leaving Mexico for good, or your vehicle import permit is going to expire while you’re out of the country, you’ll also need to go into the main building (to the left, after you’re done at this initial booth), and get your refund for the deposit on your vehicle permit. If you are returning, and the permit won’t expire within the time period of you going and coming back, and you’ll also be leaving Mexico before the permit would have expired, you don’t have to do this. You can leave your sticker in tact and you’re good to go upon re-entry. So, say you’ve got 90 days left on your permit, and you plan to go to Belize for 30 days, then return to Mexico, and then also leave Mexico within the 60 days following, you could just keep the temporary vehicle import permit, thereby not needing to pay the non-refundable $50 USD portion of the permit.
  • No matter what, even if you’ve got ample time left on your Mexican tourist card, you must relinquish it upon leaving Mexico.

You’ll then be on your way, crossing a river, and you’ll come to a roundabout.

Take the second exit on the roundabout and head for the small shack you see there, this is where you get fumigated, a requirement to enter Belize. I believe it’s $5 or $10 BZD, and they accept US dollars and pesos here as well.

From there, head to customs (which would have been the first exit when you initially hit the roundabout). There’s a $30 BZD fee to park here, and we were told the first time we came through to keep the receipt, as they’ll want to see it if you cross into Guatemala. The second time they said this wasn’t necessary. No one ever asked to see the receipt, including the border patrol guys, so it’s not clear how official this fee is, whether you can refuse it, or what might happen if you did.

To get into Belize, you’ll need:

  • Your passport.
  • Vehicle title (and some have said registration, but as our vehicle is from Texas, the only “registration” is our sticker on the windshield…no one ever asked to see this).
  • Valid driver’s license.

Other websites reported that you need copies of these items as well, but no one asked us for copies that they could keep. Always better to be prepared, but just FYI.

There’s no fee (other than for parking and the fumigation) to get into Belize. You pay when you leave, and it’s $37.50 BZD per person over the age of 18. That’s all you need when exiting, aside from your passport which will contain a stamp for your vehicle (if applicable to you) and your own personal stamp. Even though minors don’t pay the exit fee, they still need to present their passports, though both times we left Belize we didn’t need the kids to actually be physically present to show this.

The first time, actually, they required me to come in and then my wife as well (long story as to why we couldn’t go in together, involving a busted starter and needing to keep the vehicle running, which eventually resulted in Mexico’s border patrol helping us to push start the vehicle so we could catch it in gear and get to Chetumal), but the second time I just walked in with all five of our passports, paid the fee, got stamped out, and no one else had to be present.

Importing our car the first time took over an hour. They are in no rush at the border and it’s no advisable to try and hurry the process along. If you thought Mexico’s pace was slow…

We were admitted without a hitch the first time. When we left Belize, back to Mexico, I asked how long we had to wait until we could re-enter the country, “You can come back whenever, today if you’d like,” the border agent told me.

However, months later when we re-entered Belize, the woman working the counter told me, “This permit is for a bonafied tourist,” then looked at me, “which you are not.”

She implied that because we were traveling longterm through Central America that we weren’t tourists, and warned me that we would likely not be permitted back into the country, though she was going to let us in since she, apparently, liked my family. I think she was just giving us a hard time, but that’s what happened.

You get 30 days to be in Belize with no additional fees, including paying nothing for your vehicle, and with the exception of the exit fee.

After you cross the border, you can purchase insurance for a few days or the entire 30 day stay, but insurance is required at all times in Belize. It’s relatively cheap, though I can’t recall the specific amounts of our two week or initial 30 day insurance plans. When I needed to renew for the second 30 day period, it was $24 BZD and I was able to do that near Placencia, Belize, as there are multiple insurance companies and locations throughout the country.

Renewing Your Tourist Card in Belize

There are two ways to renew your tourist card. You can leave the country and come back in. This is cheaper, as it’s only $37.50 BZD to do this. Alternatively, you can go to an immigration office anywhere you can find one in the country, and pay $100 BZD to renew.

Given what the woman told us about not being readmitted, we went to the immigration office in Belmopan. Hundreds of people were in line, so we drove to Dangriga, a smaller city on the coast, and had it all taken care of–tourist card and vehicle permit–within 30 minutes.

There was no additional fee for the vehicle to stay longer, though we had to pay the $100 BZD per adult. Crossing in and out of the country would be a far more cost effective strategy.

Transferring Belize to Pesos, Pesos to Belize, or Quetzals

At both the San Ignacio / Guatemala Border and the Chetumal / Corozal Border, you’re likely to run into someone (on the “non-Belize” side) who is there looking to exchange your Belizian dollars to the new nation’s currency. We found this a particularly good deal in Chetumal, as he was giving a better rate than the official currency places. Just look up the rate first before committing.

Belize Visa and Residency Information

With more than 180 miles of beautiful beaches and islands, a friendly, relaxed pace of life, and fabulous year-round weather, more and more people are making the move to live or retire in Belize . Unlike other countries that force expats to run an expensive and complicated gauntlet of visas, the government of Belize openly welcomes visitors to its country.

If you have thought about moving to or retiring in Belize, here is everything you need to know about visas and residency:

Residency in Belize

The most popular residency program in Belize is known as the Qualified Retired Persons (QRP) Programme . Anyone aged 45 or older (retired or not) may be eligible. Qualifying individuals who can demonstrate a $2,000 a month pension, Social Security, or other annuity program can benefit from a number of tax breaks, including the duty-free importation of all household goods, including personal vehicles. The QRP program generously only requires 30 days a year to be spent in country. The QRP program benefits also cover spouses and children (including adult children) of eligible individuals.

The QRP program does preclude qualifying individuals from conducting business in or working in Belize, but does allow individuals to continue to operate businesses located outside of Belize.

Citizens of many countries, including Canada, the United States, Great Britain, CARICOM, Japan, Norway, Mexico, New Zealand, Venezuela, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Colombia, Japan, Brazil, Guatemala, and the European Union, can enter Belize without obtaining a visa prior to using their passport (that has at least six months left of validity).

Expats, tourists, and residents of Belize, including those entering on a tourist visa, have the right to freely move around in the country, buy property, sell property, and rent property, but not to work in Belize.

To stay in Belize longer, visitors must continue to renew their tourist visa every 30 to 90 days at the Immigration Department in Belize City, Belmopan, or directly with the senior immigration officer in other districts of the country. To renew the tourist visa, foreigners must demonstrate proof of sufficient funds, generally prorated at $60 per day.

In order to qualify for residency, foreigners must have spent one full year in Belize legally and pay a non-refundable fee of around $1,000 (depending on country of origin) and prove that they have transportation to their home country.

Citizenship in Belize

For permanent residents who can demonstrate that they have legally resided in Belize for five years or longer can qualify for citizenship. Citizenship can also be bestowed on spouses and minor children.

The visa policy for Belize describes the laws, conditions, and also restrictions that all foreign citizens must follow if they wish to travel to, enter, and stay in this nation.

In general, travelers wishing to visit Belize must have a passport valid for at least three (3) months after the date of arrival. They also need a return ticket and enough funds to cover the stay. Some travelers also need a consular visa to enter Belize.

Fill me in

General Entry and Stay Requirements for Belize

Visitors are often given a one-month stay, after which an extension can be obtained at the nearest Immigration Department.

Visitors to Belize must apply for a visa unless they come from one of the visa-free countries. As for sufficient funds, the minimum required is USD 75 per day. The good news is that most travelers don’t have to visit a consulate or embassy to get a visa since over 101 countries and territories do not need a visa to enter Belize.

In addition to a visa, some citizens require a clearance document before entering Belize. It’s also important to mention that certain countries must pay a repatriation fee (unless otherwise mentioned) of BZ$1,200 upon arrival.

By now, Belize only offers en Embassy Registration and a Clearance if required. Since many countries can enter Belize visa-free, the nation has not launched any special travel document yet.

To see more information about the Belize Visa Policy, we suggest reading the lines below.

Tourist Visa Policy for Belize

Arranging a trip to Belize means having to be ready with the travel documentation. All travelers need different visa conditions depending on their nationality and what purposes they have in the country.

Holders of passports and emigrant travel documents issued by at least 101 countries do not require a visa to visit Belize. However, it is important to mention that few countries do need a visa to enter Belize. It is possible to see which countries do need a visa to enter Belize by entering iVisa.com’s Visa checker .

Any national on the “requires visa” list who has a valid multiple-entry United States Visa or Permanent Residency Card, a valid multiple-entry Schengen, or multiple-entry visa or permanent residence card for Canada, is free from the visa requirements to enter Belize. We recommend that if the traveler falls into this category, then the traveler should contact the nearest Belizean Embassy before planning any trip.

Visitors to Belize must always hold a valid passport for at least three months after the date of arrival. They must also have a return ticket with sufficient funds to cover the intended stay. Most travelers are given a one-month stay, after which an extension can be applied for with the Immigration Department.

Travelers from countries like the US and its territories, Canada, the UK, the EU, and the countries from Central and South America, do not need a consular visit to enter Belize. For travelers driving/boating into Belize from Guatemala or Mexico, a temporary entry permit must be obtained at the point of entry. Vehicle/vessel permits are valid for up to 30 days.

Visa Exemption for Belize

Holders of passports and refugee travel documents from at least 101 countries and territories do not need a visa to enter Belize. These territories can stay in Belize for a short-term stay. The maximum number of days can vary from 30 days, 90 days, or up to 180 days depending on the country of origin.

Besides, all residents and holders of the multiple-entry visa of the US and Canada can enter Belize without a visa, and they can stay within the island for 6 months with a chance of extension. Travelers with a valid visa issued by any Schengen member country are also visa-free for a maximum stay of 90 days in Belize.

To verify which countries are Belize visa-free, we suggest using our visa checker on our homepage or the upper drag-down menu.

Nationalities that require a Belize Clearance

Some nationalities require clearance in addition to a visa. A Belize clearance is a special document granted to certain individuals so that they can enter the country by offering classified information, including health status and criminal records (if necessary). This tends to be necessary in restricted areas, and in the case of Belize, it is required for a few countries.

A clearance by itself is normally not enough to gain access to this country; the Belizean authorities must also determine that the cleared individual needs to know specific information and, most of the time, a visa is also required. No traveler from any of these countries is supposed to be granted automatic access to Belize solely because of rank, position, or security clearance:

  • Afghanistan
  • North Korea

In other words, citizens from this country will have to get a Consular Visa to enter Belize, and then, obtain clearance as well.

Health Information for Belize

As of July 12, 2022, travelers entering Belize are no longer required to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test. This applies to all points of entry, including land and sea borders. The Belize Tourism Board advises that this decision was made in light of the declining COVID-19 case numbers in the country. Apply now
