The Best Guide For Your Visit To Fanø, Denmark

' src=

The small island of Fanø, just 12 minutes by ferry from Esbjerg on the west coast of Denmark, has so much to offer, especially for nature lovers. It’s worth staying over for at least one night if you have the chance.

Fanø lies within the UNESCO-listed Wadden Sea National Park, Denmark’s largest national park. In addition to spotting seals, you can explore the beaches, the dunes, and local museums, look for amber and visit Sønderho, the winner of the prettiest village in Denmark award.

How And Where To See Seals On Fanø Island

You may get lucky if the tide is out and spot seals as you wander along the coast. I saw a colony of harbour seals resting on a sandbank just down the road from the ferry port opposite Fanø Krogaard.

Alternatively, there are two tour options to spot seals on Fanø: a seal safari or a boat trip.

Take A Guided Walk To Spot Seals

The seal safari is a 1.7 km (1 mile) guided walk, beginning at Seal Bank Walk Meeting Point at the end of Sønderho Strandvej to Galgerevet, a large sandbank southwest of Sønderho.

Outside of the summer months, you’ll need layers of warm clothes and wellingtons, which you can hire from Club Fanø.

The tour lasts 2 hours and costs 150 kr per person for adults and 60 kr for children aged 4 to 14.

However, if you book the Seal Tour online , you pay an additional 12 kr per adult ticket and 9 kr for children aged 4 to 14. Email bookings at [email protected] do not incur a booking fee.

Take A Seal Watching Boat Trip

Alternatively, from the middle of April until the end of October, you can take a 2-hour boat trip from Fanø Marina in Nordby to the seal banks north of Fanø. The small boat holds up to 12 people, so reserve your place on Tour Boat Martha well in advance. Contact via email .

There are two daily trips, one at 11 am and the other at 2 pm.

The trip costs 300 kr per person for adults and 150 kr for children up to 12 years old.

You should be aware that there is no gangplank; getting on and off the boat is via a vertical ladder and is difficult for people with mobility issues.

Things To Do On Fanø Beaches

Fanø Beach and Rindby Beach offer the perfect area for swimming and sunbathing. However, if you’re looking for something more adventurous, contact Club Fanø to learn how to skimboard, use one-wheeler skateboards, kite surf or kite landboard. Whatever you choose, you’re sure to have an unforgettable experience!

Try Blokarts At Buggy Beach

To the south of Rindby Beach, you’ll find ‘buggy beach’ where you can try out Blokarts, a three-wheel, sail-driven sand kart, kite surfing, kite buggies and land boards. Contact the Blokart School Club Fanø to book a lesson and hire a Blokart.

Enjoy The International Kite Flying Meeting on Fanø Beach

Every June, Fanø hosts an international kite-flying meeting on Fanø beach. The wide beach and perfect wind conditions make Fanø an excellent place for kite flying. Use this link to find the date of the next International Kite Flyers Meeting on Fanø.

Search For Amber On Fanø Beach

One of Denmark’s best places to look for amber is Fanø Beach, which is a little further south than the buggy beach.

Amber can be washed up on the shoreline during a period of low tide following a particularly severe storm. Storms during autumn and winter tend to bring up more amber, making these seasons ideal for amber hunting.

Beachcombers looking for amber should pay attention to where the birds are congregating. Plenty of birds means food, and the tide may have also brought in amber.

The Best Spots For Bird Watching on Fanø Island

  • The white-tailed eagle, Denmark’s largest bird of prey, can be seen around Fanø Klitplantage during the winter.
  • From March to May and August to October, up to 15 million migratory birds use the Wadden Sea as part of their migration route between the Arctic and Africa. The best place to watch migratory birds on Fanø is Hønen, the beach area just south of Sønderho.
  • An artificial coastal lake just north of the beach at Sønderho has a camouflaged observation room overlooking the dunes, ideal for birding.
  • You are likely to spot the migratory birds east of Sønderho at high tide, but this is a people-free zone, so take binoculars.

Bird Book For Denmark

Unfortunately, most Danish birding books are not published in English. However, The RSPB Birds of Britain and Europe: The Definitive Photographic Field Guide is an informative book with great images and descriptions, which make it easy to identify many birds you’ll see in Denmark.

What Is Fanø Klitplantage?

Fanø Klitplantage, also known as Fanø Dune Plantation, is a forested area in the centre of the island covering 1,421 hectares. The landscape is an ideal setting for recreational activities such as hiking and birdwatching, consisting of dunes, small lakes, meadows and marshes.

There are three marked hiking trails through the plantation and the chance to spot fallow or red deer and rabbits.

In addition, there is a children’s playground and a dog forest where dogs can run freely off the leash.

Car Parks At Klitplantage

Klitplantage offers several car parking areas for visitors –

  • Pælebjergvej, the highest point on Fanø
  • One car park at each end of Tolvteskiftvej
  • Albue Fulgekoje on Fulglekøjevejen
  • Paradisdalen og Gåsehullerne

Travelling outside Copenhagen may be daunting due to the complexity of the language. Food And Drink On Fanø

You won’t go hungry on Fanø; there are plenty of places to eat and drink on the island. However, as the island gets busy during the summer months, it’s best to reserve a table in advance if you want to eat at a particular restaurant.

If you’re self-catering or fancy a picnic, there are Super Brugsen supermarkets in Nordby and Sønderho, close to the beach in Rindby and a Spar supermarket in Nordby.

Where To Find ATMs on The Island Of Fanø

There are ATMs on Fanø, including a Danske Bank ATM at Hovedgaden 74 in Nordby . However, it’s best to withdraw cash from ATMs in Esbjerg rather than wait until you are on the island.

If possible, try to avoid using Euronet ATMs. While all Danish banks charge foreign cards, Euronet charges more than reasonable. In addition, Euronet’s exchange rates are appalling, and finding online information about their costs is virtually impossible.

Don’t Use Euronet ATMs

Euronet’s exchange rate is appalling. They charge a transaction fee and a terminal exchange fee, and of course, they add your own bank charges to the transaction. That’s three fees on top of the worst exchange rate out there!

Why Are There Porcelain Dogs In The Windows On Fanø?

Porcelain dogs can be seen in the windows of homes, especially around Sønderho. This tradition dates back to when Fanø and Esbjerg had Denmark’s largest fishing harbour. The dogs believed to be Staffordshire King Charles Spaniels, are a sign that the men have gone to sea and are watching for their return. When the dogs face inward, it means the sailors have returned.

Not only will you see the porcelain dogs in all the windows, but they’re also for sale in many souvenir shops around the island.

Fanø Travel Guide: Visit Denmark’s Most Idyllic Island & Live Among Artists

Fanø Travel Guide

The island Fanø is located just off the coast of Esbjerg in the southwest of Denmark. It is considered by many domestic tourists to be the best Danish island to visit, and international travelers are beginning to pay attention to Fanø as well.

Fanø is a great day trip to make if you are staying in Esbjerg. It is also an island where you can easily spend an entire week just enjoying the settings: Fanø is famous for its beaches, its old houses, its craft shops, and a wildlife that includes hundreds of seals, birds and other animals.

This article will serve as a travel guide to Fanø. We will give some general tips, we will list the best attractions on Fanø, and we will share some recommendations on where to stay on Fanø Island if you are coming for a multi-day trip.

Facts about Fanø

Fanø Beach

Fanø is one of the Wadden Sea Islands just off the coast of the Danish mainland. It is approximately 16 kilometers long and 5 kilometers wide. The principal towns of Fanø are Nordby (where the ferry comes in) and Sønderho in the south. The western shore of Fanø has a long beach – in total, the entire island offers 25 kilometers of sandy beach and in some sections the beach will have a width of more than one kilometer!

3,200 permanent inhabitants live on Fanø Island. They mostly live a traditional lifestyle, although some take the ferry to the mainland every day for work. Fanø is known for its laid-back vibe. Life there is very calm and idyllic. It does have modern infrastructure, so if you visit Fanø or live there for a while, you won’t have to make any compromises, but the environment certainly feels more traditional on Fanø than in most other parts of Denmark.

The island gets a lot of tourism, especially in the summer. Both upper and middle class citizens of Denmark like to holiday on Fanø. Some have permanent beach houses on the island, while others just come to stay at inns and B&Bs. For the last few decades, Fanø has also received a lot of German tourists, and now it is becoming a popular destination among a wide variety of foreigners.

Fanø is also home to a lot of animals and can be considered an open-air zoo. The sea around the island has a lot of seals, and the seals frequently gather on the sands of the southwestern section of the island. Fanø has plenty of hedgehogs, deers, foxes, hares and rabbits.

Traditionally, the Danish Conservative party has been very popular on Fanø. Conservative members held the mayor’s office from 1970 to 2006, while they did so in alliance with classical liberal party Venstre from 2006 to 2018. However, since 2018, the mayor has been from Alternativet which can basically be considered the Danish Green Party. Many locals on Fanø are climate-aware conservatives. This combination often seems strange to foreigners, but once you experience the lifestyle on Fanø, the combination makes sense. If there is anything that defines this island, it is that people care deeply about the environment and the state of the world, while also enjoying a lifestyle with strong traditional values.

To and from Fanø Island

Fanølinjen

To reach Fanø, you must take the ferry from Esbjerg. It is a very quick 12-minute trip. The company FANØLINJEN sails from Esbjerg to Fanø (and vice versa) every day of the year.

It costs 35 DKK to travel with the ferry for the majority of the year, but the price rises to 45 DKK in July and August. You only have to pay for a ticket from Esbjerg to Fanø. It is free to take the ferry in the other direction.

If you are bringing your car on the ferry, it will cost between 209 and 442 DKK depending on various factors.

Tickets can be booked online at the ferry company’s website or in person as you enter the ferry.

Best attractions on Fanø

The beach is the main attraction on Fanø. You can bathe, swim, surf, tan, play ball games on the sand, watch the birds, do a picnic, search for old amber, or whatever you usually like to do at the beach. With a 25 kilometer long stretch, Fanø’s beaches have enough room for everything. It is also quite fun to cruise around the beach in a Blokart, which is a three-wheeled sail-driven vehicle – you can easily rent one on Fanø since they are very popular there.

Traditional house on Fanø Island, Denmark

The architecture in the town of Nordby is really beautiful and traditional. It is a joy to stroll through the town. This is also where most of the shops and restaurants are situated.

Some nice things to do in Nordby are to visit the Fanø Museum, the Johnny Madsen Museum, the Nordby Church, and the Fanø Shipping & Costume Collection.

Madsens Galleri

In the southern end of the island we find Sønderho, a traditional village. It is considered to be one of Denmark’s most beautiful villages. Sønderho is famous for its windmill, its church, its narrow and curvy streets, and its old houses. Most of the buildings date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. They have been well-preserved and are still in use, despite their archaic looks. The Fanø Art Museum is located in Sønderho. There are yearly festivals where people meet in the streets in traditional clothes and dance. Sønderho has a rich folk music heritage. Many Danish artists have decided to live there part-time. Before the development of Esbjerg, it was a noteworthy port village, but nowadays, most of the industry relates to tourism.

Hannes Hus is a house in Sønderho which has turned into a museum, depicting what an old Fanø sailor’s home would look like. High worth visiting.

Overall, the island of Fanø has a lot of fascinating attractions related to nature as well as culture. We recommend that you see the attractions we have described here, but it is also advisable to stroll through the towns of Fanø and casually discover some of the more unknown sites on your own!

Where to stay on Fanø

Where to Stay on Fanø Island in Denmark

Fanø is a traditional island so you won’t really find any modern-styled hotels. Therefore, it does not make sense to talk about hotels when discussing where to stay on Fanø.

However, there are many inns. There are also bed and breakfasts (B&Bs). If you book in advance, it is much easier to find a room at an inn rather than a B&B, although both options are great.

Here are our top recommendations:

  • Fanø Krogaard

This is one of the highest-rated inns on Fanø. Located in the town Nordby, right next to the port where the ferry comes in, you will have easy access to the sea as well as to the town centre of Nordby where the majority of the restaurants are situated.

Fanø Krogaard has some nice rooms, a really amazing terrace, great service, and it has its own restaurant and bar. In other words, you will have just about everything. There are five different rooms to choose between – from a budget room to a deluxe room with balcony – so you can always find something that suits your needs. Breakfast is served in the morning, and in the day you can go explore the island or visit the beach. Sometimes, the inn arranges guided walks for the guests.

Check pictures of Fanø Krogaard on Booking.com where you can also make your reservation.

Another nice inn on Fanø. Nørby Kro is neither located in Nordby nor Sønderho, but rather in the central village of Nørby. However, it is still within walking distance of almost everything, and you can rent a bike if necessary. There’s free parking if you’re bringing your car.

The main benefit of Nørby Kro is that you will have more space than in other accommodations on Fanø, both inside the room and outside in the common areas and in the garden. You will basically be living in an old, well-kept house.

Nørby Kro also serves great food. Even if you aren’t staying at the inn, you should stop by for a meal at least once. If you do stay there, you get access to the morning buffet which is quite good.

When booking, you can choose between a double room with a terrace or a junior suite. Prices are around the same range as other inns on Fanø.

View pictures of Nørby Kro and book your stay here!

Det Blå Gæstehus

If you want to stay at a typical B&B, this is probably the best option. Det Blå Gæstehus is a very popular place of accommodation among tourists. It is a local house in Nordby, it has a distinctly blue color, and when you stay there you get a nice view of the sea. The house is also near the main attractions of Fanø.

The house dates back to the 1800s but feels more modern than other guesthouses on the island. It has three “rooms”: A full apartment on the main floor, a double room on the first floor, and a family room on the first floor. Which one you book is up to you, but you have to do it well in advance. With only three rooms, availability will always be tight, so if you want to stay here, don’t wait until the last minute to book!

Det Blå Gæstehus is a fabulous choice if you want an authentic stay in the middle of the town Nordby.

View the pictures and make your booking here!

Remember also that you can get a full overview of all the available inns and B&B by visiting the Fanø section on Booking.com .

Best restaurants

The best restaurants on Fanø

Fanø is full of restaurants. If you walk through the town centre of Nordby, you will notice several options. Fanø has everything from pizzerias and fastfood to gourmet restaurants with classic Danish dishes. There is a time and place for both. If you stay in Fanø for one day, you should obviously just pick one of the best restaurants and eat there. If you are staying for several days, perhaps even a week, you should try some different restaurants. For instance, you could eat at one of the cheaper venues for lunch, and then have a really fancy dinner at night.

Here are the restaurants on Fanø that we recommend the most:

  • Restaurant Ambassaden (top class food)
  • Restaurant Sønderho Kro (a great inn)
  • Cafe Nanas Stue (authentic)
  • Fajancen (top class food)
  • Rudbecks Fanø
  • Kellers Badehotel
  • Pelagoniehuset
  • Pandekagehuset (perfect for families)
  • Slagter Christiansen (a butcher, but sells complete dishes)

Look some of these restaurants up on the phone map or on Google and see if they look interesting to you.

When is the best time to visit Fanø?

The weather is amazing in the summer months – late June, all of July and August, and early September. But of course, this is also when most tourists come to visit, so Fanø can be crowded in the summer. If you want to enjoy the beach, this is not really a problem, since the island has such a long coastline that it doesn’t really matter how many tourists there are. But if you want to go sightseeing, eat at restaurants, and stay at inns, it can at times be a bit too much, and the prices are higher than the rest of the year.

So we recommend going in the spring and in the early autumn as well. The weather is still decent on many days, and everything is a bit quieter and cheaper.

You can also consider going in the winter. Fanø is incredibly charming in the winter because of the Christmas traditions. However, it is cold and windy, so be prepared for that.

Basically: If you want to go to the beach and enjoy the weather, definitely come in the summer (July is best). If you want to experience the local culture on Fanø, try going in the off-season.

Travel Offers

Travelmyne featureprint, fanø - the magic of the danish north sea.

Fanø is a relatively small island in the Danish North Sea , which captivates visitors with its rural atmosphere and its old sea travel traditions and stories. Wide sandy beaches, vast heaths and beautiful dune plantations make the island the ideal retreat.

Geography - In the Danish North Sea

Fanø is an island in the Danish North Sea , which has an area of almost 56 km² . It is the northernmost Danish Wadden Sea island , is 16 kilometres long and 5 kilometres wide . Important towns on it are Nordby (2,659 inhabitants) and Sønderho (278 inhabitants). The nearest city is Esbjerg in West Jutland . The region's climate is influenced by the Gulf Stream, which creates pleasantly warm summers and mild, rainy winters .

Nature - A former sandbank

Fanø developed from a sandbank , which is apparent from the wide sandy beaches and the high, wide dines in the west of the island. Great amounts of sand are washed up on the island's west coast to the present day, which is why F anø expands towards the west every year . In the east, the coast is dominated by marshland, meadows and reed , while the island's heartland is characterised by heath , a pine forest and several dune plantations . The region's fauna consists of wild rabbits, deer, foxes and numerous bird species . In addition, the island is a great destination for collectors of amber . Thanks to the flat beaches and the high salt content of the sea water, you find a lot of the "gold from the sea" at Fanø's coast. Fanø is part of Denmark's Wadden Sea National Park .

Culture - Under the banner of sea travel

The culture on Fanø is strongly influenced by sea travel and fishing. These are the trades Fanø's population lived on after the freedom from the Danish Crown in 1741. The island's maritime past is still apparent from traditional folk music, maritime houses and naval churches . You see the latter in Nordby and Sønderho. The charming maritime houses , which are over 200 years old , have thatched roofs and colourful doors , are also worth seeing. In the Hannes Hus museum i n Sønderho, travellers can see such a house from the inside. Other worthwhile museums and buildings are the Sønderho Mill , the Tile Museum , the Fanø Art Museum in Sønderho and the Fanø Museum in Nordby. Another part of regional history are the bunkers from Word War II , which form a part of the Atlantic Wall.

Experience - Fanø's charm

Time seems to stand still on Fanø or at least it seems to pass very slowly. The small towns welcome visitors with Danish maritime houses, cosy cafes and small harbours . Sønderho was appointed Denmark's most beautiful village in 2011. Besides a shopping stroll or a visit to the museum , holidaymakers can experience the island's relaxed atmosphere and the ancient sea travel traditions during the Fanniker Days in Nordby in July. Old costumes and traditional music play an important role at this event. A great way of exploring Fanø's nature is collecting amber or going on an  oyster safari . It is nature which produces the ingredients for a number of local dishes. Mushrooms, glasswort and fish are used in the preparation of many dishes enjoyed by the locals and tourists.

Activities - The International Kite Flyer Meeting

There are several ways to spend your time on Fanø. The island offers great conditions for playing golf . It accommodates Fanø Golf Links , Denmark's oldest golf course . Another popular activity is cycling . Since the island is not very large, cycling tours are the best way of exploring its nature. Walks across the mudflats, surfing, sailing, land sailing and riding are on the list of popular leisure activities as well. The highlight of every year, however, is the world's greatest International Kite Flyer Meeting in June. About 4,000 participants populate the island's beaches at that time and let their colourful and unusual kites soar into the air.

Information

Fanø is a wonderful destination both in the peak and the off-peak season. The weather is changeable in summer. You best go by ferry via Esbjerg to Nordby . This trip takes about 12 minutes and there are two ferries ( Fenja and Menja ) which travel every 20 minutes by day .

Travellers who are looking for relaxation, lovers of nature and active holidaymakers will have great fun on Fanø. The vast dunes, wonderful sandy beaches and endless heath as well as the idyllic villages are ideal for relaxing and recreational holidays .

Find Your Way to the Fantastisk Danish Island of Fanø

Just off the west coast of denmark sits a little island full of nature, history and culture.

In the dusky twilight hours of near Scandinavian midnight, we traverse the grassy dunes to the immense and wide open windswept beach beaming special UV lights. Flashy yellow-tinted goggles made of plastic protect our eyes and focus our hunt. Here, on the tiny Danish island of Fanø, lucky seekers might find bits of ancient amber washed up in the sand. With patience and perseverance, suddenly a bit of luck – a little speck gleams in the ultraviolet light. Jackpot! The tiniest fleck of the coveted gem. Our collected dust won’t bring in the big bucks as amber hunting is apparently much better in the shoulder seasons of autumn and spring or after a storm. But still, the late Danish sunshine and mild breezes blowing down the beach make the outing all the more fun come summer. Come to Fanø, she said. It’s fantastisk here. Especially this time of year.

A Place in Protected Waters

Tides and time have weathered the shores of lovely little Fanø. One of three small islands set in the shifting sands and biodiverse waters of Denmark’s Wadden Sea National Park , Fanø is the furthest north. To reach this pretty place, you’ll need to catch a small ferry in the industrial port of Esbjerg for a quick twelve-minute ride across the sandy channel. These protected waters are part of the greater Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site that stretches from Esbjerg, Denmark in the north to Germany’s westernmost shores and then to The Netherlands down south. Here millions of migrating birds each year, make nests and find shelter and food on their routes north and south. Bring your binoculars to find eagles, falcons, and a myriad species of shorebirds. Or take a boat tour and look to the sandbank offshore for encounters with the island’s local colony of harbor and grey seals.

For reference we hit the dock on the first Saturday of school holidays about 15:00. We missed the first boat, but made the second one at port. Home to Fanø Kite Festival

Wind plays a big role up and down the west coast of Denmark and Fanø is no exception. Here, harnessing that wind then becomes part of the fun. Home to one of the region’s largest kite festivals, the middle of June pulls enthusiasts from around the world (in normal years) with their biggest and best strung out to the wind. Even if you missed the specific dates for this year’s Fanø Kite Festival , you’ll still find plenty of large-scale kites gracing the skies all summer. Look out for ginormous dogs, whales, turtles, octopus, dragons, squid, and more sail overhead almost in slow motion as you bike, walk, or drive underneath. Yes – they are that big. And so is this beach.

Head to Sønderho, Fanø Bad or Rindby Strand where you can drive directly onto the shore. And while it might feel unnatural to steer your vehicle on the sand, the tradition of cars on this beach is over 100 years old. Home to the infamous beach races from 1917-1923 where enthusiasts brought their fastest vehicles to fly across the sand from around Europe. Watch out for drifts of soft sand, as we experienced, you can get stuck. Or keep your beach cruising green and load up the bike for a day by the water. Look for the red and white lifeguard stands to stay safe in the wilder waters of the North Sea. Believe it or not, it wasn’t that cold.

Sail Across the Sand in a Blokart

No sailing school or certificate is required to strap into a blokart and zip across the sand. Book ahead online to feel the wind in your hair with Club Fanø who offers one-hour sessions on the “ buggi område ” south of Rindby Strand. No experience necessary, but children do need to be a certain height (135 cm) to keep the cart safely on its wheels. Double carts are available for those slim people or children who need assistance. Our youngest teen opted to double up with dad. It seems a little daunting at first, especially if you’ve never harnessed the wind, but we caught on pretty quickly and the session flew by. Literally. Helmets and gloves are available at the beach. Don them first before a quick lesson on how the cart works and which way the wind is blowing that day. It’s big fun. Try to keep up with your crew. Sharing some live shots and more island inspiration on YouTube.

GOOD TO KNOW: Adults and children (approximately aged 12+) from 135 cm can operate carts. PRICE: 350 DKK per hour – includes lesson, helmet and gloves Book online at Club Fanoe

An Island Built for Bicycles

Only 16 kilometers from top to bottom and nearly flat as a pancake, Fanø is the perfect place to peruse on two wheels. Paved bicycle paths take you almost everywhere you’d want to go – from village to beach and bird watching too. Bring your own onboard the ferry and skip the car altogether. Or rent for your crew while here. Weekly packages are available at most shops or do the pickup and drop off around the island with the Donkey Republic app. You may know this from other cities – like Copenhagen and Aarhus – it works the same here. We were able to rent up to five bikes per registered user. They are nice because you only commit to how much you want to ride that day. We picked ours up at the Stoppestedet ice cream shop and restaurant right at Rindby Strand and rode them down the beach into Fanø Bad and on the paths to Nordby and back. Be careful of the soft sand on the beach as it can take your bike down. The tracks between the green grassy strip and below the dunes are fairly solid and safe. GOOD TO KNOW: Download the Donkey Republic App here . Prices scale per hour or full day. Bring your own helmets as they are rarely included. Other bicycles, e-bike,s and cargo bike rental options on the island: Fanø Cykler – Rindby Strand (cash only) Fri BikeShop – Nordby

Beyond the Beaches, Explore the Unique Fanø Culture

A special little microcosm of Danish culture, Fanø is one of the only independent kommunes in the country. Built on maritime and exploring prowess, the island has a rich and slightly bittersweet history. Step inside the Fanø Museum in the cute capital of Nordby to see what life was like in the late 1800s – early 1900s for one family on this island. Tall people beware, the doorsills and entries are narrow and short – so don’t knock your head. While the placards in place are only in Danish, ask at the desk for information in English. ( Engelsk )

Nicknamed the “island of widows,” at one period in time every fourth woman had lost her spouse to shipwrecks or just missing at sea. Engagements here meant more than the weddings themselves as the men often left for several years at a time. Suddenly the tradition of signaling to your lover by the strategic placement of your faience ceramic dogs in the window makes sense. Brought back from explorations around the world, If the funny foreign hounds face into the house it meant that your sailor was home. But if turned out to face the street, tryst-seekers and lovers were welcome to call. Peek in the windows of the classic thatched roof houses on side streets in the adorable villages of Nordby and Sønderho and you can still see the funny porcelain dogs. During July, you can experience a little of the historic cultural life and costumes on Wednesday nights. Shops and cafes will stay open late as music and players in traditional dress will fill the streets.

Fanø Museum | Skolevej 2, 6720 Fanø Open Daily 11.00 – 15.00 Closed Saturdays Price: Adults over 14 | 35 DKK, children free As of July 2021 – valid corona passport required to enter the museum – read more her e on how to prove for locals and visitors.

Wander the Lanes and Pop in the Shops of the Capital Nordby

The largest outpost on Fanø, the main village of Nordby is definitely the biggest. Cruise the main pedestrian cobblestone street for cute little cafés and local artisan shops showcasing local glass, ceramics, and textiles too. Step inside the secret garden space of newly opened Haven, a petite boutique hotel and charming café run by Danish friends Line and Camilla. Sample one of the delicious sandwiches served on the very best bread as you sit outside under the rosebushes or with feet in the grass. It was what we like to call – a surprise and a delight.

Grocery Stores: Those who need grocery stops for their summer house stay will find a nice Super Brugsen and Spar near the ferry landing in Nordby. (A smaller, but well-stocked Dagli Brugsen is down in Sønderho.)

One of Denmark’s Most Adorable – Don’t Miss Sønderho

Fans of thatched-roof homes will fall in love with adorable little Sønderho on the southern coast of the island. A little sleepier, but so so cute to wander the history-laden streets. Looking for a unique and truly special stay? Book a room at the Sønderho Kro. A kro is a Danish inn and many offer the elegance and charm of yesterday. No space at the inn from 1722? You are welcome to book a meal in the beautiful dining room or out in the garden. Need a little refreshment, but not quite so fancy? Take a pause at Fanø littlest café – Tre Søstre (Three Sisters) near the candy and souvenir shop. Known for their smoothies and blended iced drinks and house-made soft serve. Rescue Boats and Working Windmills Turn History on Fanø

Windows into Fanø’s past life are sprinkled across the island. Near Sønderho you can see the inner workings of a still active windmill. We missed the annual Danish windmill day – every 3rd Sunday of June – but were able to score a bag of the recently milled rye flour. Step upstairs to get brilliant views of this part of the island. Boating enthusiasts can get a little peek at the rescue boat system that saved plenty of lives off these shores. Or walk up the hill to see the island’s oldest sea mark letting captains cruising know where they were from the water. Sea marks sprinkle the Danish west coast – read more about them in my post about our visit further north in Vesterhavet here.

Sample a Local Craft Brew and the Dish of the Island

A guide for me isn’t complete if it doesn’t share what you should eat. Take a seat on the patio outside and enjoy a pint of creative craft beers from Fanø Bryghus. On less than wonderful weathered days, book a table in the brewhouse inside – cozy tables showcase views of the brewing and local photography. A food truck on-site offers a few dishes to enjoy with your suds. Try the “ bakskuld ” if you like smoked fish. A local specialty of dried, smoked flatfish served pan-warmed with butter and local rye bread ( rugbrød .) Or just the simple fish & chips – battered and delicious.

Come to Fanø she said

It’s fantastisk here. That’s Danish for fantastic. (*wink, wink.) Perfect for a long weekend or even better, a full week. Pick a summer house to stay with your crew – most within walking distance to that big wide beach. Follow the numbered signs for each path that takes you the short walk over the dunes. Signs on both sides will help you remember your way back. Find rentals online through standard booking sites, like Booking.com or Airbnb. But more popular around here are ferielejigher websites specializing in summer house lets. I share more about what is expected when renting a Danish sommerhus here . But check out Fanohus.dk for a start. I hope you find your way to this special place. It’s probably one of my favorites spots across Denmark. Do you know the island? Did I miss one of your favorites? Please feel free to share in the comments below. I would love to go back. Skål ! And cheers from here.

Happy I could help! Hope you enjoyed your time on the island. Cheers and thanks for your comment!

Thanks so much for this very useful site to help us explore Fanø – I’m going there for three weeks this August. Do you have any idea whether there’s somewhere that does activity camps for children on the Island, or even on the mainland at Esbjerg? I’m rehearsing for an opera during the days and am not sure what my 12 yr old will do while I’m working! Many thanks, Mary

Hi Mary – what an amazing opportunity for you! I don’t know of anything on Fanø, my friend who lived in Esbjerg recommended you look at https://kulturskolen.dk/ – I’m assuming you need activities in English?

Fano Island

visit fano denmark

The Conde Nast Traveler magazine refers to it as “one of the European Continent’s secret offshore gems.” The island of Fano off the coast of South Jutland is a 16-kilometer stretch of diverse paradise – white sand beaches, heath and woods and the crystal blue waters of the Wadden Sea continue to attract visitors especially when summertime rolls around.

Accessible via a 20-minute ferry ride from Esbjerg, part of Fano’s charm is its proximity to the towns of Nordby in the north and Sonderho in the south which provide more opportunities for sightseeing as well as fun outdoor activities. Once a major trading port in the 19th century, the island has transformed itself into one popular vacation spot complete with resort infrastructure that complement its amazing landscapes. Today there are over 2,500 holiday houses and villas, cycling and hiking paths along with beachside eateries all catering to tourists.

The primary attraction is the stretch of beach and the swimming area at Fano Bad which is on the western side of the island. Nature lovers also have the time of their lives hiking through the wooded areas, walking through the dune plantations or watching the different species of birds that can be found in the northern side of the island. In June, the island is host to the four-day Fano International Kite Festival where some 5,000 kites of different colors, shapes and sizes adorn the blue skies. Other attractions include the 18th century Sonderho Kirke which is known for the 14 votive ships and the Hannes Hus Museum which give visitors a glimpse into the life of a sea captain in the 18th century.

Fanø Island

Fanø island: a hidden gem in denmark.

Fanø Island

Tucked away in the North Sea off the coast of southwestern Denmark lies Fanø Island, a picturesque haven for nature lovers and beach enthusiasts. As the northernmost of the Danish Wadden Sea Islands, Fanø offers a unique blend of stunning landscapes, rich history, and charming architecture.

A Rich Maritime History

One of the most fascinating aspects of Fanø Island is its rich history. Dating back to the 13th century, the island was once a thriving trading hub and a prominent center for shipbuilding. Today, remnants of its maritime past can still be seen in the quaint town of Nordby, the seat of Fanø municipality. Walking through its narrow streets, visitors can admire the well-preserved wooden houses that showcase the island's architectural heritage.

Outdoor Adventures Await

For those seeking outdoor adventures, Fanø Island is a paradise. Its expansive beaches, stretching for miles, are perfect for long walks, sunbathing, and even kite flying. In fact, the island is famous for its annual kite festival, where colorful kites of all shapes and sizes fill the sky. The island's unique landscape also offers opportunities for cycling and hiking, with trails that lead through dunes, heathlands, and forests.

Wildlife and Nature

Fanø Island is also home to a thriving wildlife population. Birdwatchers will be delighted to spot a variety of species, including migratory birds that use the island as a stopover during their journeys. The Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is teeming with marine life, making it a haven for seal colonies and a hotspot for seal watching tours.

Festivals and Local Delicacies

To truly experience the charm of Fanø Island, visit during the summer months when the island comes alive with festivals and events. From traditional music performances to art exhibitions, there is always something happening on the island. Don't miss the opportunity to indulge in local delicacies, such as freshly caught seafood and the famous Fanø pancakes.

When to Visit

Fanø Island can be visited year-round, but the summer months offer the best weather for outdoor activities and the chance to experience the vibrant festival atmosphere. However, if you prefer a quieter visit, the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn can be equally enchanting, with fewer crowds and a more peaceful ambiance.

Fanø Island is a hidden gem in Denmark, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, rich history, and warm hospitality. Whether you're looking for a peaceful retreat or an adventure-filled getaway, this picturesque island has it all. Plan your visit to Fanø Island and discover the magic of this Danish treasure.

One of the many secret gems of Denmark is found in the western part of the Danish coast and part of the Wadden Sea. The large archipelago that extends from Holland, through Germany and all the way to Denmark, is known as the Frisian Islands.

A smaller cluster of Danish islands is composed of Rømø, Fanø and Mandø , which are located at a rather near proximity to the main land. This region of islands, especially Fanø is best known for its bird life, seals and oysters .

Another great activity you can do is tour the island by bike through the island's small cycling paths and picturesque nature, all the way to the beach sand dunes . If you are lucky and quiet enough you might also come across a few deers, including the  red deer . In case you are traveling light, you can always rent one of the local bikes. For a fun and safe adventure, it’s best to get a cycling map from the local tourist office in the main city, Nordby .

As you stroll down the beach banks,  keep your eyes open for amber , especially around seaweed and in shallow waters. During windy weather and storms, the sea washes up this precious fossil, which when sanded and polished, is a world famous material for jewellery making.
