The 5-day Patagonian Explorer cruise aboard the 210-guest Stella Australis or Ventus Australis sister ships begins in Ushuaia, Argentina, and ends in Punta Arenas, Chile. Behold some of the planet’s most remote landscapes and incredible wildlife and discover the pristine beauty of Patagonia. Highlights of this Patagonia cruise include the huge and rarely visited Cóndor Glacier in Agostini Sound and Cape Horn, the “End of the Earth” and a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.

The Stella Australis and Ventus Australis cruise Patagonia, bringing you luxury and comfort only surpassed by their activities. Visit fabled spots like Cape Horn and Wulaia Bay before cruising down the Beagle Channel. Continue through the maze of islands and glaciers, including Pia Glacier, Porter Glacier, Agostini Sound, Águila Glacier and Cóndor Glacier before entering the legendary Strait of Magellan. Search for condors and other wildlife by Zodiac, hike through Magellanic forest to glacial waterfalls and panoramic views of bays, and walk to a lighthouse on stunning Magdalena Island and its immense penguin colony before disembarking in Punta Arenas.

The Australis sister ships are the only small expedition vessels in the world to visit the Cóndor Glacier regularly. This spectacular but remote glacier at the southernmost tip of South America is guarded by and takes its name from the world’s largest flying bird, the Andean condor, which can weigh up to 33 pounds and have a wingspan of over 10 feet.

The 5-day Patagonian Explorer cruise can be combined with the 5-day Fjords of Tierra del Fuego cruise to create a round-trip, 9-day/8-night itinerary.

Read on for details about this trip, or learn more about AdventureSmith’s Patagonia cruises and Patagonia trips .

Patagonian Explorer - Ushuaia to Punta Arenas Itinerary

The 5-day Patagonian Explorer – Ushuaia to Punta Arenas cruise operates from Ushuaia, Argentina to Punta Arenas, Chile, moving south to Cape Horn and then north past glaciers and the Strait of Magellan.

Route map of Patagonian Explorer Ushuaia to Punta Arenas 5-day small ship Patagonia cruise, operating from Ushuaia, Argentina to Punta Arenas, Chile with visits to Cape Horn & Wulaia Bay, Pia Glacier & Porter Glacier, Agostini Sound, Águila Glacier, Cóndor Glacier & Magdalena Island.

Check in at 409 San Martín Ave. in downtown Ushuaia, Argentina, between 10:00am and 5:00pm on the day of departure. Board the ship at 6:00pm. After a welcoming toast and introduction of captain and crew, the ship departs for one of the most remote corners of planet Earth. During the night, traverse the Beagle Channel and cross from Argentina into Chilean territorial waters. The lights of Ushuaia disappear as the ship turns into the narrow Murray Channel between Navarino and Hoste islands.

Stella Australis, Ventus Australis

By early morning, cross Nassau Bay and enter the remote archipelago that comprises Cape Horn National Park. Weather and sea conditions permitting, venture ashore on the windswept island that harbors legendary Cape Horn (Cabo de Hornos). Discovered in 1616 by a Dutch maritime expedition and named after the town of Hoorn in West Friesland, Cape Horn is a sheer 1,394-foot high rocky promontory overlooking the turbulent waters of the Drake Passage. For many years it was the only navigation route between the Pacific and Atlantic and was often referred to as the “End of the Earth.” The park was declared a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2005. The Chilean navy maintains a permanent lighthouse on the island, staffed by a lightkeeper and his family, as well as the tiny Stella Maris Chapel and modern Cape Horn Monument.

Sail back across Nassau Bay and anchor at fabled Wulaia Bay, one of the few places in the archipelago where the human history is just as compelling as the natural environment. Originally the site of one of the region’s largest Yámana aboriginal settlements, the bay was described by Charles Darwin and sketched by Captain FitzRoy in the 1830s during their voyages on HMS Beagle . This area is renowned for its mesmerizing beauty and dramatic geography. After a visit to the Australis-sponsored museum in the old radio station, which is especially strong on the Yámana people and European missionaries in the area, choose between three hiking options of increasing degrees of difficulty and ascend the heavily wooded mountain behind the bay. On all hiking options, stroll through an enchanted Magellanic forest of lengas, coigües, canelos and ferns to reach panoramic viewpoints overlooking the bay. Before leaving Wulaia Bay, drop something into the wooden mail barrel inside the museum–letters or postcards meant to be hand delivered by future travelers–an ancient mariner tradition.

breakfast, lunch, dinner

In the morning, navigate the northwest arm of the Beagle Channel to enter and disembark in Pia Fjord. Take a short hike to a lookout from where you can see Pia Glacier extending from the top of the mountain range all the way down to the sea.

In the afternoon, aboard Zodiac boats, sail between high rocky walls to reach Porter Glacier. Stop to observe its colors, listen to its sounds and if you are lucky, even witness some calving. Stay here for a moment to discuss this incredible ice mass and take some photographs before returning on board.

Early in the morning, sail through the Cockburn Channel and enter Agostini Sound, where it is possible to see the glaciers that descend from the middle of the Darwin Mountain Range, some of which reach the water. Disembark for an easy walk around a lagoon, which was formed by the melting of the Águila Glacier. Reach a spot right in front of that glacier with stunning views. In the afternoon, approach the Condor Glacier via Zodiac and hope to see some of the abundant Andean Condors in the area.

After an overnight cruise back into the Strait of Magellan, anchor off Magdalena Island, which lies about halfway between Tierra del Fuego and the Chilean mainland. Crowned by a distinctive lighthouse, the island used to be an essential source of supplies for navigators and explorers and is inhabited by an immense colony of Magellanic penguins. At the break of dawn, weather permitting, go ashore and hike a path that leads through thousands of penguins to a small museum lodged inside the vintage 1902 lighthouse. Many other bird species are also found on the island. In September and April — when the penguins dwell elsewhere — this excursion is replaced by a ride aboard Zodiacs to Marta Island to observe South American sea lions. After a short sail south along the strait, disembarkation at Punta Arenas is scheduled for around 11:30am.

Hear It from Travelers Who Have Explored with Us

Ship and staff were great. Everyone very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. All were top notch. Great knowledge, friendly and extremely helpful.

This trip was INCREDIBLE. We are a retired, yet active couple and we are always looking for trips that are adventurous and truly unique. Patagonia was on our bucket list and Adventuresmith made it happen.

Ship and staff were great. Everyone very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful.

Accommodations Review

Nice clean cabin. Comfy bed. Other facilities in tip top shape.

Meals Review

Mostly good, some very good. They did a good job feeding 190 people, but some dishes were not the best. Would have been nice to have more fresh veggies. Also, breakfast was the same (runny scrambled eggs) every day. Some more variety, like hard boiled eggs or omelettes would have been nice. Service was terrific.

Crew & Guides Review

All were top notch. Great knowledge, friendly and extremely helpful. We can mention those we met: Juanita, Chris, Monica, and expedition leader Mauricio. All were great.

Traveler Advice

Be prepared for all kinds of weather and sea conditions.

This trip was INCREDIBLE. We are a retired, yet active couple and are always looking for trips that are adventurous and truly unique. Patagonia was on our bucket list and Adventuresmith made it happen.

The Venus Australis is a smaller cruise ship (which is a big advantage in my opinion) and was still very comfortable and modern.

The food and cooking emphasized local ingredients and flavors. I found the guanaco to be very tasty and unique.

Itinerary Review

Visiting Buenos Aires and Santiago was a very enjoyable way to start and end this adventure. Both cities were lively, steeped in history, and a great way to experience the Spanish culture. Sailing the Straits of Magellan, navigating the Beagle Channel, and getting up close to glaciers and penguins via zodiac boats was unique and thrilling. Terra del Fuego is just enchanting and truly one of the great wonders of the world. Torres del Paine is a geological wonder with its mountains, valleys, wildlife, and glaciers.

Fellow Passengers Review

We were able to make fast friends with several of the couples on the trip and will make every effort to stay in contact with them. The ability to interact and become friends with people from different cultures and countries is always a highlight of these trips

Both the Ventas Australis and the Explora Lodge had wonderful trip leaders and guides.  Sergio and Guy, both Explora Lodge guides, were just so knowledgeable and passionate.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

Great communication, tips, and advice were very much appreciated. Thanks for giving us a wonderful vacation and trip of a lifetime.

Be prepared to have fun. I recommend the use of trekking poles on hikes which are readily available.

Ushuaia Argentina Port Guide

If you’ve ever wanted to travel to the end of the world, you’re in luck. Located at the southernmost end of South America, Ushuaia is literally a city on a hilltop and a famous Argentine resort town. Getting here on a South America cruise is an adventure in and of itself, as Ushuaia is often called a doorway to Antarctica.

Ushuaia is an important port city and the capital of the Tierra del Fuego province of Argentina. The town boasts incredible natural beauty through its national parks like the Tierra del Fuego National Park with cultural institutions like the Museo del Fin del Mundo, or the End of the World Museum. Skiing, boating among snow-capped mountain vistas, and hiking are some of the most popular Ushuaia excursions. While stopped on your Ushuaia cruise, catch views of both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans from Beagle Channel. Animal lovers can’t miss a stop at Gable Island and Port Williams Navy Base, where you spot penguins and sea lions in their natural colonies.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to ushuaia, tierra del fuego national park.

Don’t miss out on the Tierra del Fuego National Park, one of the area’s top natural attractions. Lose yourself in a hike among the glaciers and the natural, untouched forest. There are even buses that take passengers from Ushuaia directly to the park entrance. You won’t be able to see it all in a day, but it’s still a sight you won’t soon forget. Outdoor enthusiasts will love the sheer variety of athletic activities to do here, whether that’s hiking at every skill level, sledding, or taking a replica of a train that once brought convicts to the isolated, harrowing Ushuaia prison.

Museo del Fin del Mundo

Learn about the history of this part of Argentina from when the indigenous population ruled for thousands of years all the way to colonial occupation and modern day times. You’ll see ancient artifacts, preserved sailboats, and relics of daily life from hundreds of years ago along with tributes to the rich history of the “end of the world”.

Beagle Channel

Charles Darwin once explored Beagle Channel during his 19th century expedition through Argentina. The channel itself is named for Darwin’s ship, the H.M.S. Beagle. Beagle Channel offers views of the Pacific on one side and the Atlantic on the other, and there are only two other places in the world that can say that. Tour the lighthouse at the end of the world and watch carefully to spot rare dolphins.

Lake Escondido

Venture outside of the town on your Ushuaia cruise to Lake Escondido for some blissful solitude at one of Argentina’s most beautiful lakes. You’ll be surrounded by the Fuegian Andes mountains as you kayak or canoe here, and it’s perfect for an adventurous afternoon on the water or a relaxing paddling trip.

Learn More About Ushuaia Shore Excursions

Top things to do in ushuaia, head to martillo island to see penguins.

Have you ever seen an undisturbed colony of penguins? Observe them in their natural habitat during your time in Argentina. You’ll feel like you’ve been dropped in the middle of a nature documentary when you take an excursion to Martillo Island to watch the Magellanic penguins that call the island home.

Explore the Spooky Ushuaia Prison

Ushuaia was once a famous penal colony, and today you can tour the prison facilities that once imprisoned hundreds of convicts and kept the city of Ushuaia afloat with their back-breaking physical labor. The prison is also the site of the Museo Maritimo y del Presidio, where you can tour exhibits dedicated to the area’s important maritime history.

Scuba Dive Along Beagle Channel

Strap on your scuba gear and dive the incredible Beagle Channel during your Ushuaia, Argentina cruise. You’ll swim alongside the area’s rare marine life and get a feel of the cool Patagonian waters. Underwater wrecks and tunnels await for an adventurous dive.

Go Horsebacking Riding in Ushuaia

The dense forests and incredible natural landscape of the Tierra del Fuego National Park and other areas make for a breathtaking horseback ride in the wilderness of Argentina. Family businesses in Ushuaia often advertise rides along the Beagle Channel or will take you on horseback to the top of Mount Susana.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Ushuaia Cruise Port

Ushuaia offers some of the best seafood in Argentina like mussels, crab, and sea bass. For perfectly prepared seafood, Volver regularly gets rave reviews from publications and locals alike. Kaupé offers dishes like sea bass marinated in spicy butter with capers and other mouthwatering options like tenderloin with plum sauce, or simply an appetizer of king crab without any accoutrements. Looking for a more relaxed cafe? Almacen Ramos Generales offers carb-laden classics like croissants, baguettes, and sweet pastries, and they’re open till midnight. Pair with a beer on tap for an inexpensive treat.

Culture & History of the Ushuaia Cruise Port

Indigenous peoples have inhabited the southern tip of South America for centuries, but Ushuaia as we know of it today began to develop as a trading and shipping port city as early at the 14th century. During the 19th century, Charles Darwin spent four years in Patagonia and the surrounding regions on an expedition that helped shape his theories on evolution. In 1885, Ushuaia was named the capital city of the Tierra del Fuego province.

Along the way, Ushuaia has worn many hats: missionary colony, home to a major prison, naval base, resort town, and more. It has also acted as a popular hub for travelers en route to Antarctica and is affectionately nicknamed “the end of the world” because of its latitude. Culturally, Ushuaia takes its museums and institutions very seriously, and exploring them on a cruise to Ushuaia, Argentina is crucial to understanding the pride locals take in their town.

Ushuaia Port Facilities & Location

The Ushuaia port is mostly used for shipping, but the terminal does include some essential amenities like complimentary WiFi, a tourist information center, and a few souvenir shops if you’re interested in shopping close to port. If you’re looking to arrange a boat tour or other type of excursion, there will be more information available at the port.

Transportation in Ushuaia

It’s fairly straightforward to rent a car to get around in Ushuaia, and that will give travelers freedom to explore and go off the beaten path during their Ushuaia cruise. The roads are a tough gravel, so a strong driving approach is recommended. If you’re only interested in seeing the heart of Ushuaia and its downtown, you can mostly get to and from the major attractions on foot. Taxis are readily available as well, and you can arrange a tour of multiple stops with a particular taxi driver if you’d like. They tend to be really in-the-know about what to see during your time in this part of Argentina.

Shopping Near the Ushuaia Cruise Port

The better, higher-end shopping in Ushuaia is located in the center of town, and you’ll find souvenir stalls by the cruise port. Head into downtown Ushuaia for Patagonian wool products, South American tea and other delicacies, and a variety of t-shirts and other trinkets to commemorate your time there. The area also boasts tax-free shopping.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

While you won’t find any ATMs at the Ushuaia cruise port, there will be ATMs available in the downtown area. The official currency is the Argentine peso (ARS), but the currency exchange is poor in the area. Don’t take too much cash out, because you won’t get a very good exchange rate to another currency once you leave Argentina. Tipping isn’t mandatory in Argentina, but it’s considered very polite. You can leave a 10% tip at restaurants and for tour guides and round up to the nearest peso for your taxi driver when you’re getting around on a cruise to Ushuaia, Argentina.

Sochi is a Black Sea port city in Krasnodar Krai (Russia), located close to the Russian border with Georgia. The city covers a total area of approx 177 km2 (68 mi2) and has population around 350,000, ranking it Russia's biggest resort city.

Greater Sochi (metro area including subordinated localities and territories) covers land area approx 3526 km2 (1361 mi2), sprawling 145 km (90 mi) along the Black Sea coast near the Caucasus Mountains. Part of the Caucasian Riviera, Sochi is one of the few places in Russia with a subtropical climate, mild winters and warm to hot summers.

Dubbed "Russia's Black Sea cruise capital", Sochi is the homeport for several Russian- flagged cruise vessels operating roundtrips to ports in Crimea. Since March 2022, Sochi is the homeport for the new brand "Akvilon Cruises" and its ship Astoria Grande (fka AIDAcara) . Astoria Grande offers voyages in the Black Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean, visiting ports in Georgia, Turkey, Greece (Greek Islands), Egypt, Israel.

In 2024 was inaugurated the Sochi- Trabzon ferry route. The ship deployed on the new Russia-Turkey maritime link has capacity ~300 passengers (max) and 200 vehicles.

With the alpine and Nordic events held at the nearby ski resort Roza Khutor (Krasnaya Polyana), Sochi hosted the XXII Olympic Winter Games and the XI Paralympic Winter Games 2014, as well as the Russian "Formula 1 Grand Prix" (2014-2020). It will also be one of the host cities for 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Sochi is unique among other bigger Russian cities as a subtropical resort. Apart from the picturesque Caucasus Mountains and sand beaches, the city appeals to vacation-tourists with its numerous parks, monuments, vegetation, and extravagant Stalin-era architecture. Around 2 million people each summer visit Greater Sochi, when in the city is held the annual "Kinotavr" film festival - one of the getaways for Russia's elite.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Caucasian Biosphere Reserve (2957 km2 / 731000 acres) is located north from the city.
