New logos unveiled for UCI WorldTour and UCI Women’s WorldTour

New logos unveiled for UCI WorldTour and UCI Women’s WorldTour

The UCI has given its men’s and women’s road cycling competitions ‘a fresh visual identity’ with two new logos . UCI President, Brian Cookson, said it was important that the new designs reflected a link between the men’s and women’s competitions.

The logo for the UCI WorldTour – the men’s competition - comprises five segments, featuring the colours of the UCI rainbow stripes. For the UCI Women’s WorldTour, three additional colours have been included to reflect the recent heritage of the UCI Women Road World Cup.

UCI President Brian Cookson said:

“The UCI Women’s WorldTour is a massive step forward for women’s professional road cycling and I’m delighted that we can now also reflect this with a strong brand identity. It is important that we demonstrate a clear link between the two series, especially as they represent the very highest level of competition in men’s and women’s professional road cycling. “This new brand identity is another step forward in growing the profile and professionalism of these two leading series, and the UCI looks forward to working closely with organisers, teams, broadcasters and sponsors in its activation and roll out.”

Improving the profile and professionalism of women’s cycling was one of Brian Cookson’s election pledges and he believes the Women’s WorldTour constitutes a major step forwards in this regard.

The UCI Women Road World Cup ran from 1998 until this season and was won for the final two years by Britain’s Lizzie Armitstead. The Women’s WorldTour begins next year with an increase in the number of race days compared to the previous competition.

The UCI unveiled a new version of its own logo in June . The governing body said its new brand identity was designed “to help modernise the image of the organisation” but many felt that the move reflected misplaced priorities.

The 22-year-old has raced in the amateur peloton this year as part of the Fundación Euskadi-EDP after two years at the Continental Euskadi team. He joins the French squad, which is set to step up to Pro Conti level next year, on a two-year deal, according to Biciciclismo .

Aristi took no fewer than seven victories this year, winning the overall at the Vuelta a Toledo, stages at the Vuelta a Coruña and the Vuelta a Cantabria, along with one-day successes at the GP Laukiz, GP San Juan Segura, the Circuito de Escalante, and the Clásica San Pedro Irún.

The signing comes shortly after the arrival of Leonardo Duque from the now defunct Colombia team, while the Marseille-based team has also hired Thierry Hupond (from Giant-Alpecin), Yannick Martinez (Europcar) Julien El Fares, Remy Di Gregorio, Benjamin Giraud, and Daniel Diaz – the two time winner of the Tour de San Luis in Argentina.

Rivalries, crashes and meltdowns: Tour de France storylines to watch

tour de france

Imagine speeding down a winding mountain road going 60 mph, protected by little more than carbon, spandex and a helmet, surrounded by nearly 200 competitors as thousands of stunned onlookers shout and jeer.

Now, imagine doing that for six hours a day for three weeks, with just two rest days to gather enough strength and wits to keep going.

Welcome to the Tour de France, the most elite bicycle race in the world and perhaps the most grueling endurance challenge undertaken by professional athletes.

For the first time in the race’s 111-year history, the Tour de France will begin in Italy and end somewhere other than in Paris, which is hosting the Summer Olympics . Cyclists will traverse nearly 2,200 miles of stunning European landscapes, departing from Florence on Saturday and snaking up to the Pyrenees Mountains, through the Alps and down to the Mediterranean Sea. It will conclude in Nice on July 21.

It’s no secret that while the Tour de France draws tens of millions of viewers worldwide every year, American audiences have largely overlooked professional cycling after Lance Armstrong’s very public professional demise.

In 2012, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency accused Armstrong’s seemingly untouchable team of running “the most sophisticated, professionalized and successful doping program that sport has ever seen.”

Armstrong, who won seven Tours after having cancer, vehemently denied the allegations for years until he confessed in a 2013 interview with Oprah Winfrey. His downfall culminated when the Union Cycliste Internationale, professional cycling’s governing body, stripped him of all seven Tour de France victories.

After years of disinterest, American viewership may be on the rebound, thanks, in part, to the release of “Unchained,” a Netflix show by the production team behind the blockbuster “Drive to Survive” docuseries, which focuses on Formula 1 racing. “Unchained” goes behind the scenes of cycling’s biggest rivalries, capturing in vivid detail the commitment, sacrifice and zeal needed to conquer the Tour de France. Think violent crashes, uncontrollable sobbing and inter-team mudslinging.

With so much drama surrounding professional cycling’s biggest race, here are a few storylines to watch in the coming Tour de France.

Jonas v. Tadej

This year’s biggest showdown will be a tiebreaker for the ages. Jonas Vingegaard, the Danish superpower leading team Visma-Lease a Bike, will return to defend the yellow jersey after he won the Tour de France in 2022 and last year. But Tadej Pogačar, a Slovenian wunderkind riding for UAE Team Emirates, has a score to settle. He took home the yellow jersey in 2020 and 2021, and this year he obliterated competitors in the spring classics and in Italy’s grand tour, the Giro d’Italia.

Vingegaard heads to Florence with a major disadvantage after he was hospitalized for nearly two weeks with a collapsed lung, a broken collarbone and broken ribs in April during the Tour of Basque Country. He spent much of the spring recovering from the horrific crash and training at altitude with teammate Wout Van Aert, who was injured in a separate crash.

Complicating matters is the recently announced departure of American cyclist Sepp Kuss from Visma’s Tour de France lineup. He shepherded team Visma to three grand tour victories last year. But Tuesday, Visma announced Kuss has Covid and won’t ride in the Tour.

Setting a Tour record

Will Mark Cavendish beat the record for most stage wins at the Tour de France? With 34 victories behind him, Cavendish, the Astana Qazaqstan Team sprinter, remains tied with the great Eddy Merckx. He planned to smash that record last year and retire from professional cycling, but he crashed out of the Tour before he achieved his dream. Now 39 years old, Cavendish will head to Florence with that one goal in mind.

But he has fierce competition by the name of Jasper Philipsen of team Alpecin-Deceuninck. Philipsen, of Belgium, emerged last year as the peloton’s top sprinter, winning four stages with the help of teammate Mathieu van der Poel, also known as the Flying Dutchman.

Combined, Philipsen and van der Poel are perhaps the most formidable pair and perhaps the most controversial. Philipsen’s aggressive tactics, including trying to block other riders, repeatedly came under question last year, triggering reviews by race officials and drawing criticism from viewers and pundits alike. Race officials ultimately ruled in favor of Philipsen, but his reputation had been sullied by the end of the Tour.

Evenepoel debut

Soudal Quick-Step’s Remco Evenepoel will chase a podium finish in his Tour de France debut. But at 24 years old, Evenepoel remains untested at the grand Tour, and he has suffered several setbacks in recent months.

Evenepoel, the two-time world champion from Belgium, broke his collarbone and a shoulder blade at the Tour of Basque Country in the crash that took out Vingegaard. He crashed again this month at the Critérium du Dauphiné. He quickly recovered and went on to conquer the time trial, but he ultimately lost the top spot to Slovenian cyclist Primož Roglič, who is also gunning for the yellow jersey at the Tour de France.

In his latest setback, Evenepoel was forced to bow out of the Belgian National Championships after he came down with a cold. He has less than a week to recover before he tackles the Tour de France.

Roglič vengeance

Whether Roglič can beat former teammate Vingegaard and win his first Tour de France will be one of the best storylines to watch.

Roglič, who rode on team Visma for five seasons, is no stranger to first place. He won the Vuelta a España three years in a row, from 2019 to 2021, and he took first at the Giro d’Italia last year. In 2020, he came in second at the Tour de France but lost to fellow Slovenian Pogačar.

Last year, Roglič sought a second win at the Vuelta a España, but he was pressured to back up his then-teammate Kuss. The unexpected change frustrated the already ornery Roglič, and soon afterward he announced he would leave Visma. Now with team BORA-hansgrohe, Roglič will face off against both Vingegaard and Pogačar at the Tour.

Doping problems

Professional cycling can’t seem to shake the shadow of doping more than a decade after Armstrong confessed to cheating.

Vingegaard’s jaw-dropping time trial last year, when he beat Pogačar by 98 seconds, set tongues wagging. His performance was almost too good, triggering rumblings inside and outside the peloton that he might have used performance-enhancing drugs. Vingegaard, who tested negative several times throughout the 2023 season, denied cheating and said he welcomed the tests to help prove his innocence.

This year, two cyclists have been disciplined for using prohibited substances. In May, Colombian cyclist Miguel Ángel López was banned for four years in an investigation led by Spanish authorities concerning a doctor who worked in the sport. The UCI anti-doping tribunal found him guilty of using and possessing menotropins, a female fertility drug that can stimulate production of testosterone in men.

Last week, Italian cyclist Andrea Piccolo was dropped by his team, EF Education-EasyPost, on suspicion of transporting human growth hormone. His dismissal was all the more shocking given that his team manager, Jonathan Vaughters, had confessed to doping during his tenure as a professional cyclist riding on Armstrong’s team.

The 30-year-old Frenchwoman was one of cross-country mountain biking’s rising stars before her world came tumbling down. After battling with injuries, an eating disorder and juggling training with a part-time job just to make ends meet, she has found her calling in the Cross-country Marathon (XCM) format.

UNSTOPPABLE PIDCOCK TAKES ONE MORE WIN BEFORE WHILE FRENCH HOPEFUL LECOMTE SHINES ON OLYMPIC COURSE IN CRANS-MONTANA, VALAIS

Tom Pidcock (Ineos-Grenadiers) made it two wins from two in Crans Montana, in his last UCI Cross-country World Cup appearance before next weekend’s Tour de France Grand Départ. A strong but not perfect ride saw him out in front on lap two, and that was where he stayed for the duration. In the Women’s UCI Cross-country Olympic (XCO) World Cup race Loana Lecomte (Canyon CLLCTV) made all the right moves with a dominant performance on a tough course in difficult conditions.

Red Bull Unveils Star-Packed Lineup Ahead Of Tour de France 2024

Red Bull on Wednesday unveiled its eight-rider cycling team to debut this week at the Tour de France 2024 , marking the energy drink maker's latest expansion of its sports empire.

Earlier this year, Red Bull bought a controlling stake in the German Bora-Hansgrohe cycling team.

The three-week Tour de France starts in Florence, Italy, on Saturday and is expected to be a four-way struggle spearheaded by bitter rivals Tadej Pogacar from Slovenia and Dane Jonas Vingegaard.

Slovenia's veteran all-rounder Primoz Roglic and Belgian rider Remco Evenepoel also are among the big favorites.

The new Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe team will compete in dark-blue jerseys prominently featuring the drink maker's logo and ride "super aero" bikes in white.

They will be led by Roglic, who has won the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a España and also claimed his second Critérium du Dauphiné earlier this month.

Roglic reaffirmed his ambitions for the Tour, as wearing the yellow jersey was "the goal, the challenge" toward which everybody on the team was working.

"We have to go for it," the 34-year-old former ski jumper added.

"Red Bull's entry as a new sponsor "is a game changer... for the whole (sport of) cycling", said Roglic, whose new contract is said to be worth 6 million euros ($6.4 million) a year.

The star-packed Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe roster for the world's biggest cycling race also includes Australian former Giro winner Jai Hindley and Russian Aleksandr Vlasov.

Hindley told AFP he was confident the "really well-rounded team" was ready to take on the Tour, with the first day already being 'decisive' -- not in terms of winning the race, but for losing it.

"You get a good idea on what teams are riding well together, who's there in good form, who's not - all on Day 1..

"You prepare for war every day for three weeks. It's really physical, it's mentally draining. It's some of the hardest shit you can do to your body in terms of the sporting world."

Asked about how he will spend the next few days before the race kicks off in Italy, Hindley said he plans to "just eat a lot of food, go to bed early and split his legs a bit."

At Wednesday's launch in the Austrian city of Salzburg, team manager Ralph Denk said Red Bull's arrival in cycling was "really huge."

"We have a clear plan to become the most attractive brand in cycling," said Denk, adding that this would include finding "icon riders" and focusing on the development of young talents.

In 2025, a new under-23 program will seek to bridge the gap between the juniors and the team.

Red Bull has invested heavily in sports to give its brand global exposure - it owns two Formula 1 teams and football clubs, and also has branched out into extreme sports.

UCI WorldTour 2022 events

UCI WorldTour logos

UCI WorldTour events are top-level races for professional cyclists.

The events form a series, with riders competing for the overall title as well as individual wins. The UCI Women's WorldTour was launched in 2016, replacing the original World Cup and therefore adding stage races to the calendar.

After two years of disruptions due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2022 calendar largely returned events to their traditional spots in the year. Australian races Santos Tour Down Under and Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race were removed from early in the year, though, with the effects of the pandemic still affecting the organisation of certain events.

2023 UCI WorldTour: the peloton takes on a full season of thrilling action

Excitement returns in australia.

After two years’ absence due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Santos Tour Down Under (January 17-23) will once again kick off the season. The event comes just a few months after Australia welcomed the 2022 UCI Road World Championships to Wollongong.

Rouleurs, sprinters, punchers and climbers will find varied opportunities to bring battle in the year’s first stage race, which will start from Adelaide with a 5.5km prologue. Five stages will follow along the Gulf of Saint-Vincent with three finishes favouring sprinters and two for puncher-climbers. Mount Lofty (683m) will be the new decider for this 23rd edition, with its 2.6km averaging at 7.3%.

The formidable Mount Lofty will make its first appearance on the final day of racing 🔥 Riders will leave from Unley & travel up the old freeway, with the end of race neutral set to come at the notorious Devil’s Elbow. The peloton will then remain Down Under with the return of the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race (January 29).

Classics and stage races: a thrilling European spring

Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), winner of the 2022 UCI WorldTour individual ranking, is awaited in the United Arab Emirates to defend his crown on the UAE Tour (February 20-26). In the desert, he will face the Belgian prodigy and 2022 UCI World Champion Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step). The general classification specialists will then take to Europe for Paris-Nice (March 5-12), Jonas Vingegaard's first big test of the season, while his Jumbo-Visma partner Wout van Aert will refine his preparation towards the classics on the Italian roads of Tirreno-Adriatico (March 6-12).

The great classics campaign will open with the traditional Omloop Het Nieuwsblad Elite (February 25), followed by the unmissable Strade Bianche (March 4) and then the season’s first Monument: Milano-Sanremo (March 18). Big guns are already dreaming of shining on the Classic Brugge-De Panne (March 22) and the E3 Saxo-Bank Classic (March 24), quickly followed by Gent-Wevelgem in Flanders Fields (March 26) and Dwaars door Vlaanderen – A Travers la Flandre (March 29).

Following these highlights of the spring season, it will already be time to tackle the second and third Monuments of the year: the Ronde van Vlaanderen - Tour des Flandres (April 2) and Paris-Roubaix (April 9).

Once the cobblestones have been crossed, hilly courses will dominate the demanding road towards the end of this classics campaign. In the Netherlands, the Amstel Gold Race (April 16) marks the transition towards the Ardennes before the punchiest riders make the most of the Mur de Huy at La Flèche Wallonne (April 19), just before the year’s fourth Monument, Liège-Bastogne-Liège (April 23). Eschborn-Frankfurt will close this intense one-day racing campaign on May 1.

Grand Tour flavours

After Paris-Nice and Tirreno-Adriatico, the main players in stage races will go to Spain to take on the Catalan Pyrenees in the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya (March 20-26). As always, the rough climbs of Itzulia Basque Country (April 3-8) will generate a great show. The peloton will then rise even higher, in the Swiss Alps, during the Tour de Romandie (April 25-30).

It will be the start of a delightful period for fans of the three-week races. The 106th Giro d'Italia will start on May 6 from the Abruzzo region, in Fossacesia, and will end on the 28th in Rome. The winner of the 2022 edition, Bora-Hansgrohe’s Jai Hindley, will try to defend his crown against the likes of Evenepoel and Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma), 3rd in his last participation, 2019.

Sunny days in European latitudes herald the Tour de France, preceded by the Critérium du Dauphiné (June 4-11). The French event will be followed by the Tour de Suisse (June 11-18), before the season’s second Grand Tour (July 1-23).

The Tour de France Grand Départ will be in Bilbao with three spectacular stages already offering plenty of elevation, before moving to the Pyrenees on day five. The Tour will then return to the Puy de Dôme volcano, which has not been climbed for 35 years. The Alps will also offer a superb playground for a rematch between Jonas Vingegaard, Tadej Pogačar and the many contenders who will try to stand in the way of the last two winners of the Grande Boucle.

As they also eye the UCI World Championships in Glasgow and across Scotland (Great Britain, August 3-13), the stars of the peloton will have little respite before hitting the Spanish roads of the Vuelta Ciclista a España, the last Grand Tour of the season, which this year will start in Barcelona and end in Madrid (August 26 - September 14).

A spectacular end to the season

Other major races will punctuate the end of the 2023 UCI WorldTour calendar. After the excitement of the Tour de France, the Basque Country will host another major day of battle with the Donostia San Sebastián Klasikoa (July 29). The Tour of Poland will take place at the same time (July 29 - August 4).

The European summer also marks the return of one-day races with the BEMER Cyclassics, promised to sprinters (August 20), and the Bretagne Classic - Ouest-France (September 3), ahead of the Grand Prix Cycliste of Québec (September 8) and Montreal (September 10) on the other side of the Atlantic. Experts of the northern classics will also be able to shine on the tricky roads of the Benelux Tour (August 23-27).

Climbers will once again have pride of place on the occasion of the last Monument of 2023, Il Lombardia (October 7), before the final fireworks are to be launched in China at the Gree-Tour of Guangxi (October 12-17).
