The Haunting

Ghost Hunters investigated Saratoga Springs' Canfield Casino in 2010. The investigation was prompted by reports of unexplained phenomena in the 140-year-old landmark building in Congress Park.

According to Jamie Parillo, Executive Director of the Saratoga Springs History Museum, while unusual events had taken place sporadically in the building in recent years, they accelerated after the opening of an exhibition of antique clothing once owned and worn by members of some of Saratoga Springs most prominent first families, now all deceased.

Featuring three floors of exhibits as well as dynamic programs throughout the year, the Saratoga Springs History Museum welcomes visitors and members to learn more about this famous city and the people that made it so.

“Preservation Matters” Strolling Through History: Canfield Casino

Jun 24, 2020 | Preservation Matters

tour casino museum

Next Sunday, June 28, Charlie Kuenzel will lead a tour of Congress Park, a National Historic Landmark.  Charlie, a former teacher, local tour guide, and current president of Saratoga Springs History Museum, will share a wealth of information on the tour.  However, this year the tour will have greater focus on the Canfield Casino as it celebrates its 150 th anniversary.  When asked about the significance of the casino, Charlie responded, “It is one of the last structures in the city that helps to tell the story of our city’s greatness in the 1800’s when we were the number one tourist destination in America.”

tour casino museum

“Morrissey spared no expense, the premier furniture design company, Herter Brothers of New York City, was hired to design the furnishings,” shared Charlie.  The company was known for designing furniture for prominent business leaders in New York City.  “The same year they worked on the Canfield Casino, they also did The White House.  Today, the Canfield Casino is only one of three public spaces designed by the Herter Company to still be in existence,” noted Charlie.

tour casino museum

Upon the passing of Morrissey, two lesser partners Albert Spencer and Charles Reed operated the gambling house at a less than stellar level of performance. In 1893, they added a new partner, Richard Canfield.

Canfield had just returned from a trip to England and became interested in the Club House when he visited Saratoga Springs that summer. The following year, Canfield bought out Spencer and Reed for the handsome sum of $250,000, approximately $7 million today.  He immediately began to make changes to the operation and renamed it the Casino.  He required men to dress in formal attire to enter the building and payed all money won by patrons immediately from a safe located in his office that daily held one million dollars. “Canfield ran honest games and was happy to take the percentage of profit from the natural risk of each game.  He gave those that lost a split of champagne and consoled them with a gentle hand on their back,” Charlie shared. His honest and open business approach resulted in huge success.

tour casino museum

“We are very fortunate that the City of Saratoga Springs is a good steward of the building that tells such an important part of our community’s history.  Commissioner of Public Works, Skip Scirocco, and his staff have done a tremendous job of maintaining and preserving the building,” recognized Charlie.  The restoration of the stained glass windows, skylights, and the wood floors of the ballroom were most recently completed. Currently, the copper cupolas above the parlor are being restored.

As president of the Saratoga Springs History Museum, Charlie encourages everyone to visit the museum to celebrate the 150 th anniversary of the Canfield Casino and see the interior.  The Museum will be allowed to open in Phase 4 of the state’s reopening plan, which is expected to be in July. “When we re-open, we will be highlighting a fantastic new exhibit on the grand historic hotels of Saratoga Springs that will reveal the day-to-day life of visitors, traditions, social practices, and accommodations provided during the summer season – it is an exhibit not to be missed! The staff and volunteers are eager to get back to what they do best, telling the story of Saratoga Springs,” enthusiastically stated Charlie.  To learn more about the Museum, its collections, hours of operation, and admission, please visit www.saratogahistory.org .

Hard Rock Casino Rockford is opening. Here's what you need to know

Portrait of Jeff Kolkey

A moment some have waited decades to arrive is here: The Hard Rock Casino Rockford opens this week.

It's the culmination of a dream that at one time seemed impossible to attain.

But after years of planning, investment, construction and dodging all the political land mines, the nearly 180,000-square-foot casino resort at 7801 E. State St. is finally here.

Here is what you need to know about Rockford's casino.

When does the Hard Rock open?

The doors to Hard Rock Casino Rockford open at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29.

Will there be enough parking?

There are 1,700 parking spaces available in the main parking lot at the casino. An auxiliary lot east of Lyford Road has an additional 342 parking spaces with shuttle service to the casino.

What's cookin'?

There are six restaurants to suit virtually any budget and taste offered at the Hard Rock Casino Rockford. They include the upscale Council Oak Steaks & Seafood and the signature Hard Rock Café. They also have a Marketplace food hall featuring Brick'd Italian Kitchen, Constant Grind, Street Tacos and the YouYu Noodle Bar.

What did it take to build the casino?

Built by Ringland-Johnson Construction, about 1,200 workers had a hand in the construction of the Hard Rock . Workers used 1.4 million cubic feet of gravel — enough to fill 500,000 average size swimming pools — to level the roughly 25-acre site. The building, among other materials, is made of 243,000 cubic feet of concrete and 2.2 million pounds of steel. Crews installed 145 miles of electrical wire needed to power the lights, computers and slot machines.

How about that guitar?

A replica of Rockford legend and Cheap Trick Hall of Fame guitarist Rick Nielsen's signature Hamer checkerboard guitar marks the entrance to the casino. It stands 62-feet, 10-inches tall and 38-feet, 6-inches wide. Custom crafted over five months by Baltimore-based Gable sign company and shipped to Rockford, it weighs in at 7 tons.

What kind of games do they have?

Hard Rock Casino Rockford boasts 65,000 square feet of gaming space. There are nearly 1,300 slot machines and 44 table games including a six-table room dedicated to baccarat , one of the most popular casino games in the world. In addition, the casino will feature a six-table poker room .

What are the minimum bets?

Minimum bets vary based on time of day, day of the week, player demand and what players are willing to spend. Minimum bets usually range from $10 to $25.

Is anything special planned opening weekend?

Opening ceremonies including a Hard Rock guitar smash, a visit from Gov. JB Pritzker and an inaugural performance by the Nielsen Trust are invitation only and not open to the general public. However, Hard Rock officials said all the restaurants will be open, musical acts are expected on stages inside the Hard Rock Café and at the steak house and there are bunch of acts coming to the Hard Rock Live venue opening weekend.

Are there any concerts I can go to?

Opening weekend is jam packed with entertainment at the Hard Rock. Senegalese American hip-hop and R&B artist Akon takes the stage Friday night, Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Joan Jett and the Blackhearts plays Saturday and country singer-songwriter Brad Paisley performs on his Son of the Mountains tour Sunday.

What's the venue like?

The Hard Rock Live features 1,600 seats and can accommodate up to 2,000 people. It can be converted into a banquet hall for 600 to 800 people or reconfigured for smaller events.

How much money will this make for Rockford?

Under a host community agreement, Rockford is guaranteed $7 million annually in gaming tax revenue. If the city’s share falls below $7 million, the company would pay to close the gap.

What other local taxing bodies earn casino revenue?

Rockford collects 70% of the local share of casino gaming tax revenue. Winnebago County gets 20% while Loves Park and Machesney Park each get 5%.

Rare Bronze Age jar smashed by five-year-old boy in museum in Israel

The 3,500-year-old artefact broke into several pieces but Hecht Museum at the University of Haifa is far from angry. Instead, the boy has been invited to return for a tour and experts say it will be repaired.

A five-year-old boy has accidentally broken an ancient urn dating to the late Bronze Age at a museum in Israel.

The artefact was on display at the Hecht Museum at the University of Haifa when the damage happened on Friday.

But the reaction from the museum's director, Dr Inbal Rivlin, might take some people by surprise.

Directly addressing the boy and his mother, she invited them to return for a guided tour adding: "Don't be afraid, we have no claim against you."

The pair are said to have been "scared" after the jar was damaged near the entrance to the museum and quickly left.

The archaeological find was discovered during excavations in Samaria, in central Israel , and has been in the museum for 35 years.

It is dated to between 1130 and 1500 BC.

The museum described the jar as rare and an "impressive find" as most others of that period were found broken or incomplete.

It added in a statement: "It predates the days of David and King Solomon, is typical of the Canaan region and was intended for storing and transporting local consumption, mainly wine and olive oil".

Dr Rivlin explained that the jar was not behind a display case because of the vision of the museum's founder, Dr Reuven Hecht.

His intention was to make archaeological items as accessible as possible to visitors.

The museum says artefacts rarely suffer damage but this jar will be repaired and placed back on display.

Dr Rivlin also issued a note of caution to parents suggesting they may need to give their children guidance before their visit, so exhibits are not touched unless it is explicitly stated that is allowed.
