Don’t expect to see a true plantation where acres of coffee beans are grown for export. Rather, a “Coffee Plantation” in Bali usually refers to a tourist activity where you learn about the history of coffee production on the island, and get to taste different beans and preparation styles. It’s loads of fun if you’re a coffee fan, and the coffee farms are also one of the best places to buy souvenirs to bring back home.

The Best Balinese Coffee Plantations To Visit from Ubud

This coffee plantation doesn’t have the best reviews – and for a good reason! It’s not really a plantation, Satria doesn’t grow the coffee they serve there, it’s more of a small agricultural museum and gift shop.  Also… the free coffee and tea tasting they serve is really sweet. 

The reason I am recommending Satria is that it’s located within Ubud, while other coffee plantations are a 20-30-minute drive outside of Ubud, and Satria is 100% free to visit. The short tour of the Satria Balinese Coffee Plantation, the small museum on how coffee is made, and the dozen tasting beverages they provide are 100% free. 

Satria only makes money if you decide you like the coffee from the tasting enough to purchase a full cup or buy something from their gift shop.I f you’re on an extreme budget and need a free thing to do in Ubud, Satria is a fun stop! 

✔️ Bali Pulina 

Bali Pulina charges a 100K Indonesian Rupiah ($7) entrance fee for their plantation, but it includes a tour, coffee tasting, and a free snack which makes it well worth it. Located 20 minutes outside of Ubud, you can take in gorgeous views of the Balinese countryside from their cafe, which has a lovely viewpoint.

✔️ OKA Agriculture Bali 

OKA is a half-hour drive from Ubud, which makes it the most remote on this list, but OKA Agriculture has the best views and is 100% free to visit, which makes it well worth the trip! The OKA complex is set up like a giant tree house and is definitely my favorite plantation on this list. (Sorry I don’t have a good photo!)

✔️ Alas Harum

Alas Harum Agrotourism is a day club/restaurant / all-in-one activity in the Tegallalang region of Ubud. Alas Harum has a bunch of different activities like ziplining, pools, rice terrace, photo spots, high swings, and their Kopi Luwak Coffee museum.

While there’s the most to do at Alas Harum, it’s also the most expensive. To enter the complex you need to pay a 50K IDR entrance fee ($3.50) and coffee tasting is 118K ($8) on top of the entrance fee. If you would like to try their Kopi Luwak coffee, it’s another 118K per cup.

✔️ Seniman Coffee Studio & Ubud Coffee Roastery

Although not a coffee plantation, I would recommend this coffee shop in Ubud to anyone who wants to experience the best of Indonesian coffee but doesn’t have time to make a day trip to a coffee plantation. 

Seniman Coffee Studio and Ubud Coffee Roastery are artisan coffee shops in Ubud Center. You can come here to sample local brews, as well as buy coffee beans from all over Indonesia grown on the islands of Sumatra, Java, Flores, etc.

Hi Rudi, “Coffee Plantation” is the name of a common tourism attraction in Bali that they have all over the island which takes you through the process of how they process coffee beans historically, and provides samples of locally grown coffee and chocolate. Usually there will be coffee and cocoa trees you can see as part of the process, but it’s not where the beans are being grown en-masse for export.

I know Munduk Moding Plantation & Resort actually grows some coffee beans on site, along with a variety of other produce, but a lot of these Balinese “plantations” include samplers of different beans from all over Indonesia. For example, you can try a Sumatra coffee bean blend, and Java blend, which are different islands in Indonesia, along with a Kintamani blend, which are beans grown in Bali in an area East of Ubud.

The hills of Bali make an excellent climate for growing coffee – so there are LOADS of plantations to choose from. In fact this can actually feel a bit overwhelming. We will recommend some of THE BEST plantations to visit. 

There are a few important things that you need to know before you visit coffee plantations in Bali:

• Not all “coffee plantations” in Bali actually grow coffee! Some “plantations” have gardens and may have a single coffee bush. But really they are set up to give you samples and run shops selling coffee. 
• Not all coffee plantations in Bali are ethical. Some coffee plantations may not give you the real deal (especially if you’re looking for more specialist blends). AND in some cases coffee plantations keep Luwaks in captivity (small civet cats) to make Kopi Luwak. More on this soon.
• Many of the coffee plantations have shops attached. Be aware that coffee in these shops may actually be well above the market price – sometimes charging a lot more per gram than the airport.

1 Wanagiri Coffee plantation

Wanagiri Coffee plantation is a small beautiful family run plantation located in the northern hills of Bali near Danau Buyan lake. This is also one of the most authentic and ethical coffee plantations in Bali. They produce Kopi Luwak from wild Luwak beans (not from caged animals). This lovely family have run this farm for many generations and they really understand how to produce the finest coffee – each stage of the process is carefully done by hand. As a result, coffee is more expensive here. The location of this plantation may be too remote if you’re not planning to visit north Bali. However, this really is one of THE BEST coffee plantations in Bali. It costs 50,000IDR for a tour and 50,000IDR for coffee sampling. Open daily from 8am – 10pm.

2 OKA Agriculture

Beautiful plantation located 20km north of Ubud. Sip coffee with stunning views over a jungle valley. FREE entry. They also give you 14 samples for free including tea, infusions, Bali coffee and hot chocolate. You can watch roasting and learn about coffee making – you can even have a go at roasting beans in the pan. Chat to the lovely staff to learn more about coffee and this beautiful farm. 60,000IDR to sample Kopi Luwak and a traditional Balinese pancake!

3 Bali Pulina  

Bali Pulina is one of the most popular coffee plantations. This lovely plantation is located around 10km north of Ubud in the Tegalalang area. Tegalalang is the most popular rice terrace to visit and many rice terrace tours also include a visit to the Pulina plantation. This plantation is very well set up with a range of tools and equipment demonstrating coffee making over time. Bali Pulina is also a great place to learn about the beautiful variety of tropical plants and trees growing in the area. There is also a beautiful sampling terraces with stunning views of the jungle valley. Entry costs 10,000IDR including samples of coffee and teas and local Balinese snacks.

This is THE BEST coffee plantations in Bali for location. This small coffee plantation is located in the lush countryside between Denpasar and Gianyar. It is FREE to enter and the tour is free. They also offer free coffee and tea sampling. However you do need to pay for coffee Luwak and other products like packaged coffee beans are on sale here. They also offer traditional Balinese snacks. The MAS plantation is open daily 9am – 6pm

5 Munduk Moding

Munduk Moding is one of the BEST coffee plantations in Bali. We absolutely loved our visit here – and the coffee really is out of this world! Munduk Moding is a 5 star resort and plantation located in the hills to the north of Bali. What is Kopi Luwak? 

Ok, if you’re visiting the coffee plantations in Bali you will quickly come across Kopi Luwak. This is one of those unique and weird things that coffee conesures love. Kopi Luwak, also known as civet coffee, is a type of coffee that is made from coffee beans that have been eaten and excreted by civet cats. The civet cat, a small mammal native to Southeast Asia, eats the coffee cherries for their fruit pulp but is unable to digest the coffee beans. The beans are excreted in the civet’s feces, which are then collected, cleaned, and roasted to produce Kopi Luwak. Apparently the bean itself doesn’t actually touch the poop – that’s what local producers tell you anyway! 

Kopi Luwak lays claim to being one of the most expensive coffees in the world. In Europe expect to pay around $20 or more for a cup. In Bali you can get a cup of Kopi Luwak. The process of digestion and fermentation in the civet’s digestive system is thought to remove the acidity of the beans resulting in a smoother and lower caffeine blend. BUT is it all good???

Is Kopi Luwak ethical?

While kopi luwak is a VERY POPULAR coffee its growing popularity has led to increased demand, which has put pressure on civet populations. In some cases, civets are kept in captivity and force-fed coffee beans. It is important to consider the ethical and environmental implications of consuming any product, including kopi luwak. If you are interested in trying kopi luwak, it is important to research the source of the coffee and ensure that it is produced in an ethical and sustainable manner.

What can you learn at the coffee plantations in Bali? 

Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in the world, and it all starts with the growing and production process. The following are the steps involved in coffee growing and production:

Coffee beans are actually seeds of the coffee plant, which is typically grown in tropical regions around the world like Bali. The planting process involves sowing the seeds in nurseries, where they are tended to until they become seedlings. The seedlings are then transplanted to their permanent growing location.

2 Growing 

Coffee plants require specific growing conditions to thrive, including a warm and humid climate with ample rainfall (the hills of Bali are perfect for this!) They are usually grown on hillsides, as the sloping terrain helps with water drainage. Coffee plants typically take about three to four years to reach maturity and begin producing coffee beans.

3 Harvesting 

Coffee beans are harvested by hand, and the process varies depending on the type of coffee being grown. For example, arabica coffee is typically picked when the berries are ripe, while robusta coffee is often harvested when the berries are still green.

4 Processing

After the coffee beans are harvested, they need to be processed to remove the outer layers and reveal the coffee bean inside. There are two primary methods of processing coffee: the wet process and the dry process. The wet process involves using water to remove the outer layers, while the dry process involves allowing the beans to dry in the sun before removing the outer layers.

Once the coffee beans are processed, they are ready for roasting. Roasting coffee involves heating the beans to a specific temperature, which brings out their unique flavors and aromas. Roasting can range from light to dark, with each level of roasting producing different flavors. In Bali roasting is done over a wood fire in large roasting pans – most coffee plantations have a demo of roasting and may even let you have a go. 

6 Grinding and Brewing

Finally, the roasted coffee beans are ground and brewed to make the final product. The method of brewing can also vary, with options including drip coffee, espresso, and French press.

You may also see captive Luwaks which are used to produce Kopi Luwak. Coffee lovers rejoice! Bali is home to some of the finest coffee in the world and if you want to see where it comes from, there’s a Bali coffee plantation waiting to welcome you.

In fact, there are quite a few plantations here in Bali that would love to have you come and taste their coffee and our guide will introduce you to the most ethical and sustainable plantations on the island.

Let’s Talk About The Famous Luwak Coffee

We’re not sure if it’s the famous luwak coffee or the infamous luwak coffee nowadays. Luwak coffee or civet coffee or kopi luwak or coffee luwak is a fairly contentious issue and it’s one that we wanted to address before we look at the different coffee plantations.

Luwak coffee is an Indonesian phenomenon and the taste of civet coffee powder is considered to be the best coffee in the world.

It’s made when an Asian palm civet cat consumes the coffee fruit that falls to the jungle floor. However, the civet animal can’t digest the bean and it’s passed back out of the cat and onto the jungle floor.

The digestive process, however, changes the taste of the coffee and produces a less acidic better rounded flavour.

This is all good and in theory, there’s nothing wrong with civet coffee. Unfortunately, in order to produce civet coffee in enough quantity to meet the demand for the luwak coffee taste, some farmers have started to catch civets and put them in cages and then force-feed them coffee beans to boost production levels.

The resulting Bali coffee luwak made in this manner is a source of animal cruelty and most people consider it to be unethical. That’s why we’re not sure if it’s famous luwak coffee or infamous luwak coffee.

The local coffee shops and coffee plantations that we recommend below do not use farmed civets to produce their civet coffee but it’s up to you to decide whether, even in these circumstances, or not a very expensive cup of coffee luwak is acceptable to your ethical code.

Why Visit A Coffee Plantation In Bali?

Indonesian coffee is relatively unknown in the West but the nation is among the best coffee-producing countries and you will find that some of the smoothest coffee in the world comes from the farms here in Indonesia and Bali.

Balinese coffee isn’t a single variety and it’s wonderful to get out and visit a Bali coffee plantation to learn how the different varieties are raised and to sample the coffee beans and the coffee they produce.

Coffee lovers will, of course, get a lot out of a visit to a coffee plantation but even those who don’t drink coffee will find the overall process interesting.

When Are Bali Coffee Plantations Not Coffee Plantations At All?

We have to warn you that not all coffee plantations are created equal and you may find the occasional Bali coffee plantation that is more of a gift shop and much less of a coffee producer than it claims to be in its promo material.

We would recommend that you ask for a tour of the gardens and see a coffee plant or two before agreeing to purchase expensive coffee that they didn’t even grow.

Is It A Good Idea To Buy Roasted Coffee Beans From A Bali Coffee Plantation Shop?

Maybe. It depends on how much you like the local coffee and how much of a premium you’re willing to pay for it.

Somewhat ironically, you can often purchase coffee beans from the plantations for less money in the cafes in the beach towns than at the plantations themselves.

This is a lovely coffee plantation that is just outside of Ubud and near the Tegalalang Rice Terrace , so you might want to combine your Bali coffee agrotourism with some rice agrotourism.

They have a nice coffee garden keeper who will be happy to explain the different coffees they grow (from Arabic Gayo coffee to Ijen Arabic coffee, there are quite a few varieties here including the local Flores Bajawa Arabic coffee).

There is an entrance fee but you will be offered free samples from the various coffee plantations in exchange for your 10,000 IDR.

The distinctive smell of very good quality permeates the air at this tourist attraction and it’s a great place to enjoy some famous Bali coffee varieties taken from the many coffee plantations in the area.

They also have a chocolate plantation and brew rice wine onsite, so you can have a bit of a party at Teab Sari if you want to, just make sure to learn about cultivating coffee from the local Balinese farmers before you start imbibing!

Wanagiri Coffee Plantation

This is a family-run business that guarantees that it will operate 100% ethically and with a focus on sustainability.

They’ve been growing coffee here for generations and the coffee is, perhaps, the finest on the island.

It is a bit more expensive than elsewhere (and even the tour and sampling is 100,000 IDR) but there’s no doubt that the taste of the coffee is worth the price.

Just 20 kilometres north of Ubud, you will find this excellent plantation and they do one of the best deals when compared to the usual coffee plantations.

It’s free to get in and free to enjoy 14 different samples (including Bali coffee, their own hot chocolate blend and some local teas!)

However, if you want to try the coffee luwak that will be 60,000 IDR a glass and they will throw in a pancake too!

This is the closest plantation to the beach towns and it’s just outside of Denpasar in the Gianyar Regency.

It’s free to get in and the basic samples are all free too! You will need to pay if you want to try their ethically produced civet coffee.

This Bali coffee plantation also offers some excellent snacks at its onsite cafe.

This is a great organic farm that focuses its effort on Kintamani Arabic coffee and it’s one of the finest Arabicas to be found on the island.

One lovely thing about this Bali coffee plantation is that there are free visits (including some free samples) available every Saturday and Sunday, which means you can enjoy their delicious coffee and see the coffee plant that it came from for free!

Sort of. There’s no resort specializing just in coffee and we suspect that even coffee lovers might find that a little tedious.

What Will You Learn At The Coffee Plantations On The Island?

You will learn all the steps of coffee making at a Bali coffee plantation including:

Planting – all plants start with a seed and then they are germinated in a nursery and then transplanted into the soil as seedlings. This gives the plant a great chance of coming to maturity.

Cultivating Coffee – once they’re in the ground, the plants need rain, humidity and sunshine and then it takes about three to four years for the plant to start making beans.

Harvesting – this process varies from plant species to species and while arabica coffee tends to require harvesting when the fruit is fully ripe, robusta may often be harvested before the berries are ready to fall off the plant.

Processing – the fruit isn’t useful in its own right, the beans must be extracted to get that coffee taste.

Roasting and grinding – then it’s time to turn the coffee beans into the precursors of a cup of coffee.

Brewing – finally, the powder is transformed via a variety of methods into a tasty cup of coffee.

What Is The Best Coffee Plantation In Bali?

There are many great coffee plantations in Bali but if we had to pick just one? We’d probably go with the Munduk Plantation thanks to its 5-star hotel resort on the side.

What Is The Famous Coffee In Bali?

Civet coffee or coffee luwak is the most famous coffee from any Bali coffee plantation. It’s important to remember that though the coffee luwak taste is highly sought after, coffee luwak is not always produced in an ethical fashion.

Is Luwak Coffee In Bali Real?

Yes, coffee luwak or civet coffee is quite real. Many a Bali coffee plantation will produce civet coffee and the resulting Bali coffee luwak is considered to be one of the finest coffees in the world. However, please remember that not all civet coffee powder is ethically made. (See above for more details).

Do They Grow Coffee In Bali?

Yes! There are a lot of coffee plantations in Bali and they grow some of the world’s finest coffee, this includes the controversial coffee luwak or civet coffee.

Our on site specialty coffee producer – Munduk Coffee – produces the finest coffees in North Bali and helps our guests to discover the full “bean to cup” experience, right on our coffee plantation. Beans are hand picked when they are fully red, necessitating two or three rounds of harvest, typically between July and September. Our total harvest is about 1500 kg of dry bean.

Munduk Organic Coffee Plantation was established by a Balinese and European team working in partnership to bring back high quality coffee to Bali’s central hills region, thereby generating good incomes for farmers, protecting the environmental supporting the local Community while making exceptional coffees.

Sample these coffees at MMP or get them delivered to you. You can visit our modern processing and roasting facilities and learn all about our specialty coffee through our roasting and cupping sessions. Introductory sessions are included in our MMP Experience Programme – but we can also offer tailor made sessions should you wish to learn more about specialty coffees.

Coffee has many environmental advantages compared to other cash crops. The shadow trees which are needed to protect the trees are all small reservoirs of water; moreover they hold the land, thereby keeping the fertile top layer of soil in place even during the rainy season. Moreover, this in turn attracts insects and bird life which – as you can witness – is very fertile at MMP. Organic coffee plantation farming in Bali therefore does not exhaust the land and – contrary to cash crops such as oranges, flowers or even clove – can in principle be maintained for many decades in the same place.

At about 1100 meters above sea level the micro climate at MMP is ideal to grow coffee which was first introduced by the Dutch in the nineteenth century. We are still relying on descendants of coffee trees they imported at the time and which, word has it, were shipped from the island of Sulawesi. Historical records from Dutch times indicate that coffee was grown on a large scale in the area. Until the nineteen eighties, the hill stations of Gobleg and Munduk were recognized as the most productive areas on the island to grow coffee. After the harvest, the coffee would be transported to the villages at lower altitudes on horse back or dried by the farmer in a big open field which was kept only to dry the coffee.

However, with coffee prices falling dramatically in the nineteen nineties, many farmers started to abandon coffee, switching to other cash crops that brought higher revenues. Soil erosion and falling water tables followed suit. At MMP we have been advocating coffee growing to our neighbours given that it is in the long run interest of the area and its population. We are trying to work with them to grow organic coffee, to obtain better prices and to cut out some of the layers in the production chain that collect a very large part of the revenue at the expense of the farmer. While coffee farming requires patience – trees only start bearing fruit after 4 years we believe that – helped by rising international prices on world markets and the active support of the Indonesian and Balinese authorities, we can succeed with our partners. A part of the revenues from our coffees is channeled back to the community in Gobleg and Munduk where MMP is located through our “Munduk Foundation” – which supports local projects, community development and each year gives a number of fellowships to local students.

Naturally, all the coffee you drink at MMP is home grown: you can order various organic coffees made from our Kintamani Arabica beans through different processing techniques. Our espresso blend is fully Bali based and is a great basis for cappuchinos, macchiatos and lattes too. A special treat is our wild “luwak” coffee. This is the world’s rarest coffee made from coffee beans that have passed through the digestive tract of a luwak fox (civet). Luwak foxes eat red coffee beans as an element of their diet which otherwise consists of ripe fruits such as banana, papaya and sometimes bird and chicken. Beans are found on our (neighbours’) land and collected by our team. The coffee is very carefully cleaned and washed and subsequently fully washed. It has a very aromatic taste without traces of bitterness – it is prized from Melbourne to Paris. The natural environment of MMP (especially our forest area) has attracted a couple luwaks (nocturnal animals), but obviously production is very limited and we buy some from our neighbours to be able to offer small quantities to our guests. Obviously we only offer “wild” luwak coffee and abhor the practice of “caging” the foxes and forcefeeding them which unfortunately is found elsewhere on the Island.
