I had an amazing time thanks to TND. I was nervous at first, being on my own at my first rock show. But the band members made me feel comfortable and loosened me up. TND played amazingly. They seemed to genuinely enjoy performing, and were super chill to their fans. They actually care about their music and fans, and I would definitely see them again when they come back to Michigan. I had nothing but a fantastic night, and after talking with TJ, I have nothing but respect for The Nearly Deads

They rock. They make music, not just noise. Very high energy. With three bands the sets were short, but they switched equipment and moved on to the next band very quickly. Well worth the price of admission.

The nearly deads debut their “wild” new single/video.

Trend-busting, genre-agnostic rockers The Nearly Deads have released “Wild,” an introspective departure that features an almost Flamenco-style fingerpicked melody.

Trend-busting, genre-agnostic rockers The Nearly Deads have released “ Wild ,” an introspective departure that Glide Magazine christened “a symphonically theatrical winner that swoons with grace and tenderness of Adore -era Smashing Pumpkins.” Featuring an almost Flamenco-style fingerpicked melody, and a sweeping bed of lush orchestration, the resolutely majestic daydream is the third offering from the band’s forthcoming sophomore set, We Are The Nearly Deads , due out on June 2nd.

With each of the band members lending their creative direction for the album’s initial four singles, Texas-born rhythm guitarist Javier Garza Jr painted the frame of the song’s gorgeous landscape.

Shares Garza Jr.:

“While writing a handful of parts for the new album, trying to come up with some rock songs similar to Nirvana meets Green Day , I took a break and started fingerpicking some ideas which really resonated with TJ and Steve . Inspired, they added some additional parts and then we had violinist Nate Leath guest on the track and it’s turned into this whole production.”

The official video for “Wild” was directed by Filipino-African American film director, screenwriter, and producer, and IMDB Film Award winner Josh Lovett , whose crisp and expressive style was coupled with artful choreography and interpretive dance from FreshTalent Group ’s Bianca Rocha .

The group, which also features lead guitarist Steven Tobi , drummer Josh Perrone , and Theresa Jeane , their inimitable vocalist, rocketed to stardom with the playful-yet-powerful “Never Look Back,” and its 10 million strong zombie-filled music video. The kinetic energy of NLB provided an apt soundtrack to the exhilarating catharsis of out-running infected in The Last of Us, out-maneuvering the walking dead, both literally and figuratively.

The forthcoming 10-song full-length, We Are The Nearly Deads , was produced by Brian Craddock of Daughtry acclaim. With a vast array of sonic palettes and influences, Craddock, who’s also helped pen anthems for Theory of a Deadman and Timbaland , helped fine-tune the creative vision of the veteran hitmakers.

At Bay Area show, Foo Fighters frontman describes seeing his late bandmate in animal form

T he Foo Fighters ’ Dave Grohl has lost not one, but two, of his closest bandmates during his legendary nearly 40-year career. So it’s not surprising that aging and the passage of time is on his mind.

But that focus only enhanced the Foo Fighters’ rollicking three-hour show at the Toyota Pavilion in Concord on Tuesday, which Grohl said was preceded by a visit from one of those fallen bandmates.

During their 2024 tour, the Foo Fighters have played major venues like Boston’s Fenway Park and New York City’s Citi Field. So it felt odd that they were booked at the comparatively modest Toyota Pavilion. Fans got to see the Foo Fighters rock a 12,500-seat amphitheater, when they’re used to playing stadiums three times that size.

The flip side was that Toyota Pavilion struggled with the crush of people coming to see the 1990s rock legends. Fans had to endure a mileslong traffic jam leading to the venue and a parking fiasco that saw people abandoning their cars on the shoulder of the highway offramp.

Once all were inside, the band’s full-tilt opening trio of “All My Life,” “No Son of Mine” and “The Pretender” announced the Foo Fighters’ intention to, in Grohl’s words, “kick your f—king ass for the next three hours.”

Generations X to Alpha were represented in the audience, but Grohl went out of his way to tease the crowd’s older members with jokes about minivans and graying beards.

During “Breakout,” the band cut the sound and let the crowd sing the lyrics. Grohl looked touched by the audience’s commitment and poised to express his gratitude.

Not so. Instead, Grohl teased the crowd for being “old people” and rolled his eyes. Advancing age hasn’t turned Grohl too sentimental.

With all of his frontman charisma, it’s hard to believe Grohl got his start backing up the ever-muted Kurt Cobain with Nirvana .

The only time the lead singer took a step back was during the band introductions, when each band member played solos from a different classic rock tune.

Guitarist Pat Smear, Grohl’s longtime collaborator with both Foo Fighters and Nirvana, got the loudest applause for an absolutely blistering 20-second rendition of “Blitzkrieg Bop.”

While Smear and the rest of the band played, Grohl took a quick smoke break — which is expressly against the Toyota Pavilion’s rules. I guess they make exceptions for two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees.

Like their ’90s peers Green Day and Pearl Jam , the Foo Fighters have hit a sweet spot while approaching their fourth decade together. These bands now boast generations of fans and enough material for three-hour set lists, yet show no signs of slowing down.

Such was the case during high-octane renditions of hits like “My Hero” and “Monkey Wrench” but also during tracks like “Nothing At All” from their 2023 album “But Here We Are.”

They also weren’t above slowing things down, including an excellent acoustic portion in which Grohl played “Statues” and “Under You,” achieving an entirely different, but no less impactful, effect from the hard-rocking tracks.

Toward the end of the evening, Grohl honored his late bandmate Taylor Hawkins with a rendition of 1999’s “Aurora.”

“We like to play this every night because it’s Taylor Hawkins’ favorite Foo Fighters favorite song,” explained Grohl. Hawkins, the Foo Fighters’ drummer since the mid-1990s, died suddenly in 2022 while the band was in the middle of an international tour.

Before starting “Aurora,” Grohl told the crowd that he thought he’d seen Hawkins that very day, reincarnated.

“This is a true f—king story. This afternoon, I was at my house, and I was out on this balcony, and every time I see a hawk fly by, of course, I just think it’s Taylor every time,” said Grohl.

“And today we’re standing on this balcony overlooking the San Fernando Valley,” said Grohl (how Grohl got from the San Fernando Valley in the afternoon to the East Bay for an evening show wasn’t explained). “And this hawk flies by, and I’m watching it as it flies. I swear that f—king thing turned to me and laughed. I swear to God.”

The laughter confirmed to Grohl that the bird must really have been his old friend.

The band closed the evening with one new song, “The Teacher,” and two classics, “Best of You” and “Everlong.” By the time the band left the stage, it was after 11 p.m. on a school night. Hardly anyone in the Toyota Pavilion crowd had left; not bad for a bunch of old people.

Swifties and Deadheads — Separated at Birth? What the Eras Tour and Dead & Company’s Sphere Residency Share, as the Concert Phenomena of the Year

As Dead & Company's mind-blowing Vegas engagement wraps up, and Swift's European tour leg comes to a close, these outings and their fan bases have more in common than meets the dazzled eye.

Taylor Swift on the Eras Tour and Dead & Company at Sphere in Las Vegas

The worlds of Swifties and Deadheads might not seem to have a great deal in common. There may not be that many music fans who’ve registered equal numbers of spins on their Spotify playlists for “Shakedown Street” and “Cornelia Street,” or “St. Stephen” and “Hey Stephen,” or “Althea” and “Dorothea.” Yet there’s reason to fantasize that these two audiences were really separated at birth, even if their average age of Taylor Swift and Grateful Dead concert attendees wouldn’t automatically suggest that these are identical-twin fandoms.

Related Stories

‘deadpool & wolverine’ underscores mcu’s much-needed evolution, 'the boys' prequel 'vought rising' starring jensen ackles, aya cash ordered at amazon, popular on variety.

Both these ground-breaking outings have their end in sight: Dead & Company’s residence wraps up in Vegas this weekend, and next week brings the final dates of the European leg of the Eras Tour, with five last Wembley Stadium shows, before Swift wraps things up with a handful of North American shows later in the fall. So it feels like a good time to think about some of the deeper reasons why both these artists are able to keep their communities of fans so enveloped in what they’re up to, show by show.

I talked with Dead & Company’s co-manager, Bernie Cahill, recently about what Swift’s tour and the “Dead Forever” residency have in common. “I think the overlap is in the songbook, and with these two communities that really connect to the music and the lyrics and the storytelling,” he said. “And when that’s your foundation, you have an opportunity to create a real community. She’s got a huge and impeccable body of work, so there’s plenty to connect around and to resonate with her fans, and she keeps writing brilliant songs. And Robert Hunter, Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, the members of the Dead, they wrote what many call a Great American Songbook. And I think that’s always the best foundation for community and for a long career in music.”

This idea, about fan devotion to these riveting live performances being based in the bedrock of great songs, is undoubtedly true. What they also have in common is the fascination generated by how the pieces of that catalog are assorted and assembled for live performance, especially if there are surprises being pulled out on a nightly basis.

But for Swift, what a difference that 5% makes — that is, the two numbers per night in which she goes completely off-script for the acoustic “secret songs” segment. It’s the revelation of what these two performances will turn out to be that fans live for, every bit as much as Deadheads live for the gradual rollout of the full setlist. It has long been a sign of Swift’s genius that she incorporates some unpredictable segment into her arena and stadium shows; on one tour, it was a nightly cameo by a guest star associated with the city in question. She since decided that there is no guest shot like the random appearance of one of her own deep tracks. In 2023, the gambit was that she would do two unassisted surprise songs a night, one on piano and one on guitar, but for 2024, she decided even that was getting old. So in Asia, Down Under and Europe, she’s been doing mashups of her own material, ensuring fans stay as intrigued and enraptured as they were a year ago.

The best part about these medleys is that Swift doesn’t introduce them, at least to the extent that she prefaces them with any explanation of what the two songs she’s mashing together have in common for her. This leaves an aura of mystery, sometimes — an essential addition to a crowd-pleasing show that otherwise isn’t set up to leave a lot of questions lingering in the air. Sometimes, the blend doesn’t require a lot of thinking to suss out: If “I Hate It Here” leads into “The Lakes,” it’s not hard to figure out that both these compositons share a similar theme, the desire to escape. But on some nights, the mashup songs are so dissimilar, they invite a lot of speculation about what connects them in Swift’s head.

One of the nights I caught Swift in Dublin at the end of June, she combined “Sweet Nothing,” a transparently romantic ballad that lives up to its upbeat title, with “Hoax,” one of her darkest, most brooding and frankly most mysterious songs. What could these two utterly disparite tunes possibly have in common? I developed a theory. “Sweet Nothing” was an inevitability, probably, for a show in Ireland, with its localized reference to “a pebble that we picked up last July / Down deep inside your pocket / We almost forgot it / Does it ever miss Wicklow sometimes?” But that song seems to be about her relationship with Joe Alwyn (who actually co-wrote it). If she felt obligated to play an Irish-themed song in Ireland, maybe she didn’t want to just leave it there, without acknowledging — for her fans, or herself — that the “sweet” relationship turned into something else… something that felt to her like… a hoax.

Of course, the biggest part of the appeal of the Eras Tour and “Dead Forever” is how much they both push the envelope of production values. No one who attends either artist’s concert will forget what the Silent House production company did with Swift’s staging, or what Treatment did in coming up with the visuals for Sphere’s wrap-around screen for Dead & Company. Giant office scaffolding, neon bicycles, and other sets and props in her show… giant dancing skeletons and starfields in theirs… these are images that will last devotees a lifetime.

But for other artists looking for what to take away from these groundbreaking shows, without the means to conceive gigantic effects or hire the top production companies in the business… there is still something to take away. It’s the beating hearts and thinking minds at the core of these concerts, via artists who are determined not to phone it in, but to make each show feel unmissable, even if catching them all is an impossibility. That’s a hunger that artists can duplicate — or do their damnedest to try to — even on a club scale.

Tom Constanten Announces Farewell Tour with Live Dead and Brothers

After six decades of faithful service to the jam community, Tom Constanten has announced his formal retirement from touring. While the former Grateful Dead keyboardist had subtly decreased his time on the road in recent years, he took to social channels over the weekend to finally, formally announce his intentions to depart from the live circuit. To honor a storied career, reconnect with longtime collaborators and give the fans one last hurrah, the artist has announced a Farewell Tour with Live Dead and Brothers, the all-star ensemble with whom he has kept the legacy of the Dead roaring.

“This has been in the back of my mind for months,” the artist posted to his Facebook page on Saturday, Aug. 10. “The past couple of years I’ve been enjoying a relatively comfortable semi-retirement. I’ve been thinking of going the rest of the way. As Moms Mabley put it ‘You’s as old as you feels, until one day you wakes up and you feels as old as you is.’ Well, I turned 80 earlier this year, and it’s hard to not notice I’ve lost a step or three. So I’ve been thinking of removing the “semi” from the equation. This upcoming tour of Texas et al. will likely be my swan song.”

Constanten will bid the crowd farewell with a final circuit with his longtime Live Dead ensemble, featuring Berry Duane Oakley, Les Dudek, Mark Karan, Scott Guberman and Pete Lavezzoli. The sextet will plot 18 stops between Sept. 6 and Oct. 12, taking the spotlight in Texas, Louisiana, Kansas, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington, D.C. Tickets are available now through the venue sites; read on for the complete list of locations and tour dates.

“I am abjectly grateful for the many who have been so helpful along the way,” Constanten offers in closing. “The indulgences I’ve enjoyed have been ramping up over the past few years… This is not to say I’ll stop doing music. Bob Bralove is coming by in a week or so to record a few more improvisations. The last time we hit new highs! I have a project of piano morsels in the works as well. As long as my fingers keep moving, something will be happening!”

Tom Constanten w/ Live Dead and Brothers Farewell Tour Dates Sept. 6 – Carpenter Hall – Irving, Texas,                 Sept. 7 – Caillou – Kerrville, Texas Sept. 8 – HEB Hall – San Antonio Sept. 10 – Rosa Hall – Lake Charles, La. A 48 Hour Guide to Astrakhan, Russia

Baskunchak salt lake, Astrakhan region, Russia

Travellers who venture into Astrakhan will enjoy the historical charm and cultural vibrancy of this old Silk Route town. The otherworldly Lake Baskunchak and extensive Delta wetlands are just a day trip away.

Astrakhan lies close to the Kazakhstan border where the Volga River flows into the Caspian Sea. It used to be a town on the old Silk Route and is built on more than 10 islands. Meander along canals and over bridges to soak up ancient Tatar, Christian and Islamic history. Venture into the surrounding countryside to enjoy the splendour of the Volga Delta wetlands and the region’s natural beauty.

Day one – Acquaint yourself with the city

Morning – Explore local history

Start the day by taking a walk through the Kryusha Quarter. It’s the city’s former Tatar and Persian area, and it remains a predominantly Muslim area. As such, there are clusters of mosques in various states of neglect and repair.

Starting at Ulitsa Kirova, walk along Kazanskaya Ulitsa until you reach a Lenin bust. If you cross over the canal, you’ll come across a well-kept park, complete with sculptures and a lake. Continue past it, and you’ll end up at the foot of the hill where the city’s Kremlin sits on top. A UNESCO World Heritage site with inviting gardens and temporary exhibitions, the Kremlin is not to be missed.

Pro tip: The Kryusha Quarter is fascinating to walk through, but it is still a little rough. It is fine to walk through during the day, but it is best to avoid it at night.

Zhitnyaya Tower of the Astrakhan Kremlin, which is a must-visit

Afternoon – Discover Astrakhan’s cool hidey-holes

Once you’re finished at the Kremlin, cut through the Fraternal Gardens to the city’s hipster hangout, Rozmarin Cafe , and fill up on freshly cooked meals and refuel with strong coffee. Once revived, take a peek at the Museum of Military Glory, which is as patriotic as the name suggests. However, despite the museum’s nationalistic slant, it is a good place to learn about historical battles.

Afterwards, it is worth walking over to Moloko, a hip, modern canteen-style café, which is run by the same people as Rozmarin Cafe. Even if you’re still full from lunch, they are licensed. So, why not have a cheeky afternoon drink and a snack?

From Moloko , it’s another lazy stroll along the banks of the Kutum River to the banks of the Volga – the manicured riverfront is the city’s crowning glory. There are people to watch, sculptures to see, and sunsets to enjoy.

Evening – Enjoy riverside views

After all of that walking about, treat yourself to a delicious meal. Right on the waterfront, Yamato is an indulgent, top-notch Japanese restaurant. The menu offers Japanese dishes, sushi, pan-Asian and Asian-fusion meals, as well as a lot of classic European and Russian cuisine. And it’s not just the food that is good here – so is the decor, inspired by Japanese minimalism and traditional aesthetics.

Pro tip: Yamato is popular. Book a reservation or be prepared to wait for a little while.

Astrakhan Kremlin, which includes the Cathedral of the Assumption, is a UNESCO-listed must-see

Night – Embrace the local culture

For those who want to sample some high-brow culture, why not check out what ballet is showing? The Astrakhan State Theatre of Opera and Ballet may not have the same clout as other regional theatres, but like most ballet and opera in Russia, they are still done to an outstanding standard.

For those who want to kick on, take the short stroll over to Kul’tovyy Bar (Cult Bar) for dim lighting, live music and boozy drinks. It also serves reasonably priced food. After loading up on positive vibes, belt out a few tunes with new friends at any of the many karaoke bars in town, such as Chicago House.

Whatever time the night ends, rest your well-worn legs at the luxurious Novomoskovskaya Hotel , a 10-minute walk away from Kul’tovyy Bar. Sleeping options are limited in Astrakhan, but they are also affordable, which means this five-star hotel comes with a bargain price tag. It’s also right in the heart of the city, so the Kremlin and the central sights are all within walking distance.

Day two – Soak up the Astrakhan region’s beauty

Morning – Venture out to the great outdoors

Although the city still has plenty to offer, a trip to the surrounding countryside is a must. Around Astrakhan , the Volga River splinters off into thousands of streams and rivers, known as the Volga Delta Wetlands. The wetlands, filled with birds and animals, are lush and an adventure to explore.

Roads eventually peter out and make way for rivers and marshes. The further you explore the wetlands, the more likely you’ll need a boat. A trip into the wetlands is a day trip in itself, so don’t plan to cram too many countryside sights into your itinerary.

Pro tip: Many tour companies offer trips into the wetlands, so shop around to find a deal that you like. Parts of the area are protected, so tourists need a permit. Tourist agencies in Astrakhan can help you organise these. Procosta is a tour company that offers trips into the delta with a guide, and only Procosta tours can be taken without one of these permits.

A rural landscape of Astrakhan

Afternoon – Float in salty water

An alternative day trip is to Lake Baskunchak, near the Kazakhstan border. One of Russia’s major salt basins, it supplies the nation with approximately 80 percent of its salt. Back in the day, people used to flock here to reap the health benefits of the salty water and the clay, and legend has it that it is a place of healing. Despite, or because of, its otherworldly appearance and its far-flung locale, it remains a popular tourist destination, albeit an unusual one.

A swim in the lake is comparable to a dip in the Dead Sea , although many swimmers bring shoes because prickly salt covers the bottom of the lake-bed. The lake used to be an important stop on the Silk Route, as its seemingly endless supply of salt has long been a precious commodity.

Pro tip: Make sure you pack a picnic, plenty of fresh water and sunscreen because there aren’t any trees around the lake.

Evening – Feast on traditional dishes

All that country air will induce hunger that must be satiated. So, head straight to Mindal (which translates to Almond) to feast on steaming hot Georgian khachapuri and Uzbek pilaf and other drool-inducing dishes. A top restaurant in town, Mindal serves up hearty central Asian and Caucasian dishes in a casual, yet stylish setting – a perfect treat to end a long day spent on the road and in the great outdoors.

Night – Relax with a beer

Mindal has a licensed bar that also serves up hookahs, so if you are suffering from a post-pigout food coma, and are exhausted from the day, hang around and enjoy yourself for a little bit longer. But if you want a change of scenery, visit Akademiya Piva, (Beer Academy). This restaurant and brewery is not only a stumble away from the hotel, but it is an opportunity to try a local brew or two. Of their five house-made beers, one is brewed in the style of the iconic Soviet beer, Zhigulevskoye.

Pro tip: If you want to relax after dinner at Mindal, book a booth table and make yourself comfortable. Also, for those on a budget, Akademiya Piva serves pub grub at a reasonable price.

That's all our coverage on this story for today - we'll be back tomorrow with all the latest updates.

Before we go, here's a reminder of what's happened over the last 24 hours:

Emergency declared in Belgorod

The Russian border region of Belgorod declared a state of emergency, citing continued attacks from Ukraine.

"The situation in the Belgorod region continues to be extremely difficult and tense," said Vyacheslav Gladkov in a video posted on the Telegram app.

Daily shelling by Ukraine had destroyed homes and killed and wounded civilians, he added.

Some 11,000 people in an area of Belgorod were evacuated earlier this week due to Ukrainian activity near the border.

Ukrainian TV airs footage of troops pulling down Russian flag

Ukrainian state TV aired a report showing Ukrainian troops pulling down a Russian flag from a building in Kursk.

Footage showed a building in the town of Sudzha, and three soldiers pulling the flag down while shouting "glory to Ukraine".

The video appeared on the YouTube account of Ukrainian news programme TSN, which appeared to have a Ukrainian journalist in the town.

Ukraine's top commander said 100 Russian prisoners of war had been captured today in Kursk.

Oleksandr Syrskyi was shown giving the update to Volodymyr Zelenskyy via video link in footage posted to the Ukrainian president's social media channels.

Mr Zelenskyy says Kyiv's forces were continuing to advance in the border region and had moved forward by one to two kilometres in different directions since the start of the day.

Ukrainian forces 'strike' four Russian military airfields

Ukraine stuck four Russian military airfields, according to the country's defence forces.

Giving an update on the conflict on  Facebook , the army said fighter bombers, fighter jets and other military aviation equipment were based at the airfields.

It named the four sites as Khalino, Savasleyka, Borisoglebsk and Baltimore.

Ukrainian servicemen have been seen riding military vehicles and hiding from shelling near the Russian border.

Photos taken by Reuters showed a number of troops operating in the city of Sumy - the area used to launch Ukraine's surprise invasion of Russia's Kursk region.

Fighting has continued in the area today, with Russia also declaring a state of emergency in the nearby Belgorod region.

Moscow's defence ministry said Russian army units have stopped Ukrainian troops from gaining further territory near the settlements of Obshchy Kolodez, Snagost, Kauchuk and Alexeyevsky,

But Ukraine has insisted it is still advancing.

Ukraine has struck four Russian military airfields, the country's defence forces has said.

Giving an update on the conflict on Facebook , the army said fighter bombers, fighter jets and other military aviation equipment were based at the airfields.

"The main objects of damage were warehouses of fuel and lubricant materials and aviation means of damage," the defence forces said.

"The results of the attack are being clarified. Coordinated combat work of all components of the defence forces continues."

In our 19.36 post, we told you Ukrainian officials had reported a ballistic missile attack in Odesa.

Now, the regional prosecutors have issued an update on the situation, saying two people have been injured.

Writing on Telegram, the city's prosecutor office said a 39-year-old port worker and 43-year-old grain truck driver were wounded.

It said they "received injuries of varying degrees" and were being treated.

Earlier, local governor Oleg Kiper said port infrastructure in the southern Ukrainian region was targeted in the attack.

By Deborah Haynes , defence and security editor

A Ukrainian soldier holds up a Russian rifle taken from inside Russia.

"A trophy," he says, smiling.

One of his colleagues, also grinning, produces a military uniform patch that reads "Armed Forces of Russia" and a 10 rouble note.

"Russian money," he says.

The pair are part of a small team of soldiers on a grey pickup truck on the Ukrainian side of a border crossing point into the Kursk region of Russia.

A third serviceman, who gives his name as Vasil, says the unit has been fighting in Russia since the beginning of the cross-border attack from Sumy region, in northeastern Ukraine, nine days ago.

He says the Russian soldiers they had encountered were just "running away".

Asked what his group is planning to do next, he says, speaking in English: "[I] think go further [in], yes."

As for whether he is scared, he says: "No."

It is the same reply when asked whether he thinks Vladimir Putin's forces will succeed in pushing the Ukrainian attackers out.

"No," he says.

Speaking with the measured, matter-of-fact tone of an experienced soldier - he has been fighting Russia's invasion of his country since 2014 - Vasil says being part of the force invading Russia is "nothing special... I'm doing my job".

Without giving much away, he says his unit was involved in monitoring.

But the soldier does share one thing he hopes will come of the incursion - showing Russian people the reality of war.

"Maybe they [the Russians] will understand that war is not this very interesting thing where you sit at home and watch TV - war is war."

All still smiling, Vasil and his team climbed back into their pickup truck and drove across the border into Russia.

A Sky News team walked as far as we could up to the border crossing point on the Ukrainian side.

The site was badly damaged - though this was more likely caused by Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine two and a half years ago, when Russian forces charged through the same position, just in the opposite direction.

They were beaten back from Ukraine's northeastern Sumy region during a counteroffensive in September 2022.

However, Russian positions on their side of the border had been shelling this area ever since - until Ukraine launched its surprise attack on 6 August.

As we stood at the crossing, a number of military vehicles -  each one marked with a white triangle, the symbol of the Kursk offensive - sped past into Russia.

But, a unit of Ukrainian troops manning the border point appeared nervous.

They asked us not to stand together as we could draw the attention of Russian drones.

One soldier said an attack drone had exploded nearby earlier in the day.

Increasingly uncomfortable, they asked us to leave.

Driving back towards the regional capital of Sumy, a steady flow of Ukrainian military vehicles, including large transporters carrying tracked fighting vehicles, passed us in the other direction, heading towards Ukraine's new frontline inside Russia.

A clear indicator that this offensive is being reinforced - and is definitely not in retreat.

Fighting has continued in Russia's Kursk region today - more than a week after Ukraine launched their cross-border attack

Senior Kyiv officials have said Ukrainian forces were creating a "buffer zone" and planning to organise humanitarian assistance and evacuation corridors for civilians.

Residents were reportedly abandoned by Russian authorities, and some Ukrainian troops have been delivering aid to the region.

One woman said the Russians left without announcing an evacuation.

"They just packed up and left and so many people were left without means of subsistence" she added.

Russian forces have launched a ballistic missile on the city of Odesa, a Ukrainian official has said.

Port infrastructure in the southern Ukrainian region was targeted in the attack, the local governor said.

"One person, the driver of a grain truck, was injured. Currently, the victim is hospitalized in a moderate condition," Oleg Kiper said in a Telegram post.

Odesa has been the target of several attacks since Russia's invasion started in 2022.

It is Ukraine's third-largest city and, before the war, it was vital in the country's shipping system.

Ukraine's invasion of Russia's Kursk region is "very damaging" to Vladimir Putin, the former US permanent representative to NATO has told Sky News.

Kurt Volker said Mr Putin was claiming to be "Peter the Great" and he had ended up looking more like "Nicholas II", the last tsar of Russia.

"I think this is very damaging to Putin domestically," he said.

"I don't think they have found their footing yet as to how they want to deal with it."

Mr Volker said "this was a very different situation for Putin" and "people can see it".

"Putin was not fighting this war in Ukraine to lose," he added.

"He wasn't fighting halfway or holding back. He keeps saying he is going to escalate but if he could have escalated he would have already done so.

"This exposes he is not in a position to escalate. In fact, his forces are weaker than they appear.

"He is not capable of attacking Ukraine and defending Russia at the same time."

We reported earlier on comments made by Ukraine's top commander, who said 100 Russian prisoners of war had been captured today in Kursk (see post at 11.44am).

Oleksandr Syrskyi, who was shown giving the update to Volodymyr Zelenskyy via video link, said the capture of servicemen in Russia will "accelerate the return of our guys and girls home".

Ukraine's ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets has now said he has discussed the Russian prisoners taken with his Russian counterpart.

"I see that this situation at least forced the initiative from the Russian side," he told national TV.

Ukraine is believed to have captured more than 1,000 Russian soldiers since launching the invasion of the Kursk region.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy is appealing for allies to allow long-range strikes on targets inside Russia.

In his nightly address published on Telegram , Mr Zelenskyy appealed to partners to let Ukraine fire missiles deeper into Russian territory.

"The bolder the partners' decisions, the less Putin can do," he said.

The Ukrainian leader has also hailed Ukraine's "good advance" in Russia's Kursk region, saying Kyiv was achieving its strategic goal.

  1. The Nearly Deads

The Nearly Deads' sound conjures up suggestions of Paramore or perhaps Pat Benatar because of TJ's spine-tingling voice, like a wail erupting from a deluge of hefty guitars. Blending the pop-punk savours of Avril Lavigne and the rampant force of Hayley Williams, it's a voice simultaneously strident, melodic, and surging with vitality.
