Online booking option added to Lethbridge Transit’s ride by reservation system

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge has added more flexibility to the ride by reservation service of Lethbridge Transit.

As of Monday, June 15, riders can book their trip directly into the software system that schedules the transit routes. This is in addition to requesting rides by phone.

The new online booking system will help streamline the reservation process and provide more timely information for riders, according to the City of Lethbridge.

Since the ride by reservation service was implemented in April, due to COVID-19, users were given the option to phone or submit an online form to request a ride, but this still required a staff member to enter that information into the route planning software.

Now, when a user makes a request, it will flow directly into the transit system, offering more accessibility and flexibility for riders.

With this new features, users can:

· Book trips using any computer, tablet or smartphone

· View confirmed reservations for the next seven days

· Book trips up to seven days in advance

· Book as close as an hour in advance, if trips are available

· Complete trip cancellations online

· Views scheduled pickup time

· Sign up for email or text message notification of booking confirmation and arrival reminders

· See booked buses in real-time as they travel to the pick-up location

To use the online booking service, users must register with an email address. Anyone who has an email address on file already can sign up to book trips online . People who are not registered can contact Lethbridge Transit during business hours at 403-359-6558 to be added into the system.

The City noted that with the addition of online booking, the hours of the call centre have been reduced.

· Online booking is available 24/7, and rides can be booked as close to one hour before if a trip is available.

· Bookings by phone can be done Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Phone bookings must be done 24 hours in advance of a trip.

The City of Lethbridge noted that although public transit has been identified as a service that can reopen in Stage 2 of the province’s relaunch strategy, the provincial government has yet to release the guiding documents outlining the regulations that need to be followed.

As Lethbridge Transit waits for that information, staff continue to monitor rider volumes. At this time, the ride by reservation service is said to be the safest option for the public and drivers.

cityLINK schedule changes offer improvements to Transit Service

Lethbridge Transit is committed to providing a reliable and efficient service for our customers and residents. To enhance on-time performance on several key routes, we are making annual service changes that will go into effect on Wednesday, June 26.  

Transit customers are encouraged to review available resources and plan ahead to ensure a smooth commute. Ways and places to be informed about Transit schedule changes: •    Lethbridge Transit App : Use the MyRide app to plan your trip with the new schedules. ( iOS or Android ) •     Ride Guide : The latest Ride Guide, containing all updated timetables, is available here . •     Website : Visit LethbridgeTransit.ca and use the "Plan A Trip" feature.

For customers using the app or website, be sure to set the date to  June 26 to see the updated schedule in the Plan A Trip feature. Transit customer feedback and ridership levels are thoughtfully considered when making changes to schedules. This helps to meet the needs of riders and improve reliability and usability of Lethbridge’s public transit system.

New, revamped Lethbridge Transit routes launch August 25

LETHBRIDGE, AB – High frequency fixed routes for areas with high ridership and on-demand service for areas with fewer riders.

Those are the main highlights of a new-look Lethbridge Transit system. The cityLINK bus network, as it will be known, will officially launch on Wednesday, August 25.

Pretty much all current transit routes are changing in some form on that day.

Transit Manager Tim Sanderson says the goal here is to make city bus service more relevant and give riders a faster, more enjoyable bus experience.

“What we’ve done is we’ve created a network which allows you to get from Superstore on the south side to the University 30 minutes, a trip that today takes an hour and 15 minutes,” says Sanderson. “That’s really what we concentrated on. The vast majority of trips that we’ve planned have saved an ordinate amount of time for customers.” 

Sanderson admits there is a reduction in service in some areas as they had to deal with a transit budget cut of $350,000 approved by City Council a few months back.

Fixed routes as they are being referred to as are quick, straight, fast and frequent and aim to significantly decrease travel time for the majority of customers. On-demand response zones provide access to transit in areas of low transit use by connecting into the nearest hub station and the cityLINK fixed route network.

Sanderson says customers using on-demand routes can call 311 or use the new Rides on Demand smartphone app to book a pick-up. That app will be available August 25 as well.

In a news release, it’s noted that residents looking to plan their new route, information is available now online at www.Lethbridge.ca/transit . Staff are also available in-person, at the Downtown Park ‘n’ Ride Transit Terminal and, on the phone at 311, to answer questions during business hours.

Highlights of the new system include:

• Rapid 10/10 service between the University and the City Center meaning there is a bus every 10 minutes and the trip takes only 10 minutes.
• Bi-directional network lines to get riders to their destination quicker.
• Improved access to destinations areas such as ATB Centre, Chinook Regional Hospital and the Mayor Magrath commercial areas
• Demand response will make for fewer large-size buses on narrow streets as the smaller access-a-ride style buses will be primarily used for demand trips.
