Great Train Rides in Norway

If you’ve thought about Norway train journey holidays but can’t make up your mind about which ones you should include on your travels, I’ve put together this guide to ease your bewilderment. Norway by rail holidays might not seem like the most obvious choice, but there are some incredible rail adventures to be had, and you can take a look at what I and many others feel are the 8 most worthwhile Norway train tours.

The Bergen Line a Great Trip to Start Your Norway Rail Tour

Taking a train trip through Norway on the Bergen Line is like stepping into a Scandinavian fairytale. Constructed in 1909 and operating between two of the country’s largest cities, Oslo and Bergen, it sits as the highest railway line in Northern Europe. As one of the truly great rail journeys in Norway, it’s a real feast for the eyes, with each twist and turn along the route revealing stunning views of the fjords, mountains, and quaint villages nestled in wonderfully lush valleys.

These Norway rail trips will see you encountering friendly locals along the way, visiting charming stations brimming with history, and having an abundance of opportunities to savour some of the local delicacies. The Bergan Line represents more than just one of the best Norway rail journeys, it’s a joyful celebration of the country’s natural beauty and incredible hospitality. Whether you’re a seasoned traveller or embarking on your maiden Norway train vacation, this journey promises to fill you with joy and enthusiasm to plan your next adventure.

The Flåm Line Offers Spectacular Views!

Wow, just wow! The Flåm Line may be short, but if you want a picture postcard-perfect train holiday in Norway, you’ll have to go a long way to beat this as one of your experiences. An absolute marvel of engineering winding through fjord country, this 20-kilometre rail line links the mountain village of Myrdal to the delightful village of Flåm. As these Norway train trips descend from an altitude of nearly 900 metres to sea level, passengers experience jaw-dropping views of the majestic mountain, cascading waterfalls, and verdant valleys.

At every turn, a new natural wonder reveals itself, making it a nature enthusiast and photographer’s dream. Highlights of these Norway rail tours include the spectacular Kjosfossen waterfall, where the train makes a special stop, and the lush Flåm Valley, sprinkled with enchanting farms. The Flåm Line could well be the best train ride in Norway as it showcases the outrageous pristine beauty of the country’s landscape.

The Dovre Line is a Fantastic Addition to Any Norway Train Holiday!

Hop aboard the Drove Line and add a touch of magic to your train holiday in Norway. With an incredibly picturesque route running from Oslo to Trondheim, a journey here offers travellers exceptional views, and some might argue that they’re the best in the country. Just imagine gliding past rich forests, gleaming lakes, and vast open plains, all from the comfort of your train seat. One of the highlights of these Norway rail trips is passing through the staggering Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella National Park.

Be on the lookout for some incredible wildlife and the towering mountain peaks that will leave you in reverence. But the Dovre Line is more than just a train trip through Norway, it’s a spectacular adventure filled with charming towns and scenic villages. Each stop along the way offers its own unique story, inviting you to continue exploring luxury train rides in Norway to discover the country’s plentiful cultural heritage.

The Rauma Line is a Breathtaking Norway Rail Journey!

If you’re searching for picturesque, you’ll have a hard time finding anything more spectacular than the Rauma railway holidays in Norway. Although only stretching 114 kilometres and taking less than two hours to travel between Åndalsnes and Dombås, this is often regarded as the best train trip in Norway and has even been featured in movies such as Harry Potter and Mission Impossible. Opened in the 1920s, the Rauma Line offers passengers breathtaking views of the country’s most spectacular landscapes.

Including the Trollveggen cliffs and the striking Kylling Bridge, the line meanders through the picturesque Romsdalen Valley, with the emerald Rauma River running alongside, providing fantastic photo opportunities at every turn. In summer, these tours of Norway by train treat passengers to lush greenery and cascading waterfalls, while winter blankets the region in pristine snow, making these brief Norwegian railway holidays an unforgettable experience.

The Røros Line Operates On Norway’s Oldest Main Line.

If you want to experience one of the one-day Norway rail holidays and love the rugged raw beauty of the wilderness, this 431-kilometre journey between Hamar in the east of the country to Trondheim could be the one for you. As the country’s oldest mainline, these Norway train holidays offer excited passengers a historic journey through the country’s spine. Established in 1877, the line passes through stunning landscapes and charming towns as the journey delivers views on views.

The line is famous for its rich cultural heritage, particularly the UNESCO World Heritage town of Røros, renowned for its well-preserved timber buildings and mining history. Once comfortably onboard, travellers can sit back and relax whilst taking in views of forests, lakes, and mountains during these Norway train journey holidays. These Norway rail journeys are as much about the route as they are about the destination, and as much as they are a vital transportation link, they’re also a museum showcasing the region’s rail history.

The Sørland Line is One of the Best Train Rides in Norway

A journey along the Sørland Line offers a great opportunity for the whole family to enjoy a Norway train vacation. This truly represents one of the best train rides in Norway, stretching from Oslo to Stavanger, this scenic route offers a captivating blend of natural beauty and cultural charm. Offering travellers a raft of destinations, including off-train excursions, such as Scandinavia’s largest water park, Lågdal Museum, and the Fruit Village, Gvarv, where you could spend a romantic night in a wine barrel. As one of the great rail journeys in Norway, passengers get treated to breathtaking views of lush forests, serene lakes, and picturesque villages.

The Sørland Line is well-known for operating comfortable modern trains that ensure a smooth, enjoyable, and safe passage through the countryside. Along the way, the route passes through towns like Kristiansand and treats travellers to the experience of the country’s stunning coastline. Whether you’re a local, a single tourist, or a family looking for adventure, these train holidays in Norway provide the perfect chance to relax and take in the breathtaking landscapes.

The Nordland Line is the Longest Norway Rail Journey

The experience of discovering the country’s awe-inspiring landscapes is a dream come true for many travellers, and the Nordland Line may be the best train trip in Norway to do so. These luxury train rides in Norway head out along the country’s longest stretch of railway line, spanning 729 kilometres, linking the city of Trondheim to the tranquil town of Bodø, a stone’s throw from the Arctic Circle. Those setting out on an adventure can sit back and relax in their reclining seat and take in some of the country’s finest scenery.

One of the many things supporting people’s thoughts that this is among the best Norway train holidays is the opportunity to experience the incredible northern lights in winter and the midnight sun during the summer. Passengers get to experience lush forests, majestic mountains, and incredible fjords. These remarkable Norwegian railway holidays showcase the country’s wonderful beauty whilst offering a unique glimpse into its rich cultural heritage.

The Ofoten Line with Awe-Inspiring Scenery is One of the Top Train Trips in Norway

The Ofoten Line provides the adventurous rail enthusiast with magical Norway train trips through the heart of the country. Stretching from the port town of Narvik to the Swedish border, this historic line surrounds passengers with a visual feast of the region’s dramatic terrain. As these tours of Norway by train thread their way through steep mountains, crystal clear fjords, and verdant valleys, each bend opens up a new awe-inspiring view.

Laid over a century ago for iron ore transportation, the Ofoten Line now welcomes travellers eager to experience unique train trips in Norway that offer a blend of natural beauty and engineering marvels. Winter in the area transforms the route entirely into a snowy wonderland, while summer brings vibrant greenery and cascading waterfalls. For nature lovers, history buffs, or just someone seeking a serene adventure, these Norway by-rail holidays offer some unforgettable experiences.

THE MOST POPULAR QUESTIONS

Norway rail journeys faqs, can you travel around norway by train.

Absolutely! The country has a fantastic rail network with a selection of journeys, from around an hour in length to a full-day experience. The country is blessed with truly spectacular and diverse landscapes including mountains, valleys, waterfalls, and jaw-droppingly beautiful fjords. These amazing natural wonders are highlighted throughout the seasons making Norway rail holidays an absolute delight.

What is the most scenic train journey in Norway?

Not the longest of Norway rail tours, but generally felt to be the most scenically beautiful is Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana). Running a spectacular route from the mountain station of Myrdal down to the fjord village of Flåm, this journey covers some 20 kilometres, not much, but what a 20 kilometres it is. With breathtaking views of steep mountains, cascading waterfalls, and beautifully green valleys, train holidays in Norway don’t get more picturesque. The line is famous for its dramatic drop in elevation of over 900 metres within a short distance, making it one of the steepest standard-gauge railway lines in the world.

Do you need to book trains in advance in Norway?

Although many rail services allow tickets to be bought shortly before departure, that doesn’t always mean they are available. If you’re looking to jump on the best train ride in Norway, it stands to reason that others will probably do the same. The first rule of booking tickets for any railway holidays in Norway is to book them in advance, and the sooner the better to avoid disappointment.

norway train journey holidays

Tour Scandinavia and discover the many charms and delights on this two-week adventure through Norway, Sweden and Finland. Travel through some of Europe's most stylish capitals and be wowed by some of the world's biggest fjords. Visit Norway's uber-cool Oslo, travel to Sweden's vibrant Stockholm and explore Finland's hip Helsinki. Along the way, uncover a Viking past, learn of maritime heritage and get swept up in Olympic fever and embrace the Swedish “lagom” lifestyle away from hustle and bustle in the idyllic countryside. Whether it's walking along charming streets in Bergen or sailing through vast fjords, you'll undoubtedly be left with a multitude of memories from this once-in-a-lifetime Scandinavian adventure.

Trip overview

  • Norway's fjords feature some of the most stunning scenery on Earth. Cruise past waterfalls and snow-capped peaks through the narrow Naeroyfjord.
  • Visit Dalarna County, nestled in middle Sweden and often referred as “Sweden in miniature” for the abundance of lakes, forests, and local traditions.
  • Follow your local guide along the narrow, winding roads through genuine villages, past the typical red painted cottages and explore unique sights around Siljan lake rural settlements. You'll even get a chance to meet and mingle with the locals living in these villages.
  • Discover Stockholm's maritime history at the Vasa Museum, which houses an original wooden war ship from 1628. This impressive vessel gives you a rare glimpse into the naval power Sweden was once famous for.
  • Wind up your adventure in Helsinki for a Scandinavian culture binge. Senate Square, the market hall, the sea fortress of Suomenlinna and the Design Museum are just some of the highlights of this amazing city
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, Eden Reforestation Projects. Donations help them provide local employment opportunities and tackle climate change one tree at a time as they restore forests across 10 different countries.
  • The areas visited on this trip can be very cold at night throughout the year, especially at the start and end of the season. Please bring appropriate clothing for adverse weather conditions, including base layers, hat, gloves, scarf, coat and anything else that will keep you cosy.
  • Scandinavia can be an expensive destination in many ways, from museum entrance fees to optional activities, but especially in terms of eating out. Your leader will be able to advise on how to have the best value holiday in Scandinavia.
  • Space is at a premium in Europe and your hotel is no exception. Rooms are often small, but usually the central location makes up for that. For those travelling as a duo, hotels often don't have double beds, but rather two single beds that can be pushed together. Occasionally bathrooms will be shared with other guests.
  • This trip is designed to give you a fair amount of free time so you can explore each destination at your own pace. We will, however, take you on regular orientation walks, so you'll be on your feet quite a lot. While this may be tiring for some, it’s the best way to get your head around a place and to set yourself up for further discoveries.
  • On this trip we predominantly travel by public transport therefore we recommend packing light and smart as you'll be required to carry your own luggage between train stations, ferry ports and hotels, which can include going up and down multiple flights of stairs, and across cobblestones. Train stations often don’t have lifts available.
  • If you have more time to explore the region you can extend your trip by combining it with our 'Baltic Experience' trip, travelling from Helsinki through the Baltic States, and ending in Vilnius. Alternatively, you could start the trip in Copenhagen by combining it with our 'Taste of Scandinavia' trip.

View the itinerary for departures between 01 January 2024 - 31 December 2024

Welcome to Norway, where you’ll discover the irresistible charm and eccentricity of Oslo. With so much to see and do in Oslo we recommend that you plan to arrive a few days before the trip begins, so you can see as much of the city as possible. Why not head to the Munch Museum to glimpse Edvard Munch's famous painting, The Scream. Your adventure begins with a important welcome meeting at 6 pm, where you'll meet your group leader and fellow travellers. Afterwards, why not seek out some traditional Norwegian fare with the group.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place. If you can't arrange a flight that will arrive in time, you may wish to arrive a day early so you're able to attend the welcome meeting. We'll be happy to book additional accommodation for you (subject to availability).

This morning, follow your leader on an orientation walk in the city. Then enjoy some free time in Oslo. Maybe embark on some island hopping on Oslofjord, browse the harbour-front Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, taste local flavours at the food hall Vulkan, explore the immense Akershus Castle & Fortress, or check out the cool shops in the Grunerløkka district. There's so much to get stuck into.

  • Oslo - Leader-led orientation walk
  • Oslo - Holmenkollen Museum - NOK190
  • Oslo - Fram Museum - NOK140
  • Oslo - Akershus Castle & Fortress - NOK100
  • Oslo - Island Hopping on Oslofjord - NOK130
  • Oslo - Museum Edvard Munch - NOK180
  • Oslo - Resistance Museum - NOK100
  • Oslo - 24 hour Transport and Sightseeing Pass - NOK520
  • Oslo - The Norwegian Museum of Cultural History - NOK180

Today you'll leave Oslo behind and take the train across the stunning countryside of the Fjell region to Bergen. No other train ride between two cities in Europe is at a higher altitude than this one, and few can match the views passing by your window. Linking Norway's two main cities, this line takes in some spectacular scenery of lush valleys, idyllic villages, dramatic mountains and picturesque lakes as it crosses the Hardangervidda Plateau. As the trip is long and you'll arrive quite late into quirky city of Bergen, there won't be too much time to explore today (don't worry, you'll have time to explore here tomorrow). There are some great seafood restaurants in town, so possibly venture out with the group for a bite to eat this evening.

Although a global ban on commercial whaling came into effect in 1986, approximately 1000 whales are still being killed every year, as Iceland, Norway and Japan ignore the ban. We strive not to visit places that serve whale on any of our trips, however often this is unavoidable and there is a likelihood that you will come across whale meat on a menu or at a market stand.

Today's travel time is approximately 7 hours.

After breakfast this morning, join your leader for a ride by Fløibanen funicular. Taking you to 1.050 feet above the city in just seven minutes, it offers a bird eye prospective of the town and vistas of the deep blues of the sea. Those who want to get active can also continue following its multiple hiking trails. You’ll have free time in the afternoon to explore however you like. Perhaps visit World Heritage Bryggen area and wander through the reconstructed medieval homes and warehouses or visit the beautifully preserved wooden Hanseatic Museum (a former trade building), and explore the old Hanseatic port area – the Hanseatic merchant confederation dominated Baltic maritime trade for 400 years from the 15th century.

  • Bergen - Floy Mountain Funicular round trip
  • Bergen - Mt Ulriken Cable Car & Shuttle - NOK250
  • Bergen - Vidden Trail Hike - Free
  • Bergen - Bergenhus Fortress - Free
  • Bergen - Aquarium - NOK365
  • Bergen - Rosenkrantz Tower - NOK150
  • Bergen - Hakons Hall - NOK120

Leave Bergen after breakfast and travel by bus to the fjord region. The journey will take you through epic landscapes and remote regions, so have your camera at the ready. The typical Norwegian huts that you’ll stay in tonight are located in a beautiful setting, surrounded by steep cliff walls with a perfect view of the spectacular crystal clear Kjelsfossen waterfall falling from the top of the fjords. It's humbling to look up and consider these giant and ancient geological formations. Your accommodation is located near the village of Gudvangen.

  • Cabin (1 night)

The accommodation for the next two nights is in rustic cabins on a camp site in peaceful surroundings. All cabins have electricity, running water, a kitchen for self-catering and bathroom facilities that are shared between the rooms in each cabin. Bedding in the cabins is a mix of double beds, bunk beds and sofas; final allocation depends on availability and group configuration. Linen and towels are provided.

Today's travel time is approximately 3-4 hours.

Today, take a boat trip and be captivated by the sight of crisp mountain peaks reflected in the glassy waters of Naeroyfjord, a World Heritage site. The name Naeroyfjord takes its origins from the Norse god of seafarers and the sea, Njord. The fjord itself, formed by glacial erosion of the surrounding bedrock, is 18 kilometres long and only 250 metres wide at its narrowest point, but its depth reaches up to 500 metres. Surrounding mountain peaks rise up to 1400 metres and waterfalls crash down sheer cliff faces. The boat cruise will finish in fishing village of Flam, where you can ride the famous railway up to Myrdal (at extra cost). This is one of the most picturesque (and steepest) railway journeys in the country. Alternatively, explore on foot and discover nearby waterfalls and ancient moraines. Fishing enthusiasts will love the opportunity to throw a line in the crystal waters, sit back and soak up the serenity (a fishing license is required and costs around NOK 150). In afternoon, catch the bus back to Gudvangen and spend the rest of the day as you please.

  • Gudvangen - Naeroyfjord Boat Cruise to Flam (one way)
  • Gudvangen - Bike Hire - NOK350
  • Gudvangen - Kayak Hire - Half Day - NOK600
  • Flam - Cog Railway - NOK680
  • Flam - Stegastein Lookout - NOK380
  • Flam - Railway Museum - Free
  • Gudvangen - Hiking Options - Free

Please note that the Flam Railway should be booked in advance during the busy summer months. Your leader will be able to advise of the best time for this excursion should you wish to prebook this.

There will be another long bus journey ahead of us after breakfast today, as you journey to the town Alpine playground of Lillehammer. Cross vast high plains, and remote valleys, and drive through the Lærdal Tunnel, the world's longest road tunnel at 24.5 km. The tunnel is divided into four sections, broken up by ‘mountain caves’. These caves are 6 kilometres apart and equipped with special lighting to help drivers concentrate by giving off the illusion of driving into daylight. Lillehammer, which held the Winter Olympics in 1994, is picturesquely situated on Lake Mjøsa. When you arrive, head out for a brief orientation walk to find your bearings in the laid-back 19th-century town centre, along the main pedestrian street of Storgata (Big Street), lined with wooden houses, boutiques and restaurants.

Today's travel time is approximately 6 hours.

Join an orientation walk this morning and get to know Lillehammer. Your leader will take you on an included visit to the Maihaugen Open Air Museum, home of the Garmo Stave Church, which tells the story of people in the Gudbrandsdalen Valley over the last 300 years. This brilliant museum includes timber-built farms, a town and a big residential area that gives you an insight into various eras of Norway's history. The afternoon is free for you to further explore. Perhaps conquer misty mountains on a hike. As a town famous for hosting the 1994 Winter Olympics, Lillehammer has a great Olympic Museum where you can hear tales of heroic feats and is also an ideal spot for many outdoor activities.

  • Lillehammer - Maihaugen Open Air Museum
  • Lillehammer - Sigrid Undset's Home at Bjerkebæk - NOK140
  • Lillehammer - Hiking Options - Free
  • Lillehammer - Olympic Museum - NOK140

Please note some travellers choose to take part in bobsleigh activity while in Lillehammer. It is not an activity we feel is safe for novices and therefore our recommendation is to not undertake it. There are plenty of other options and our leaders will be on hand to suggest and help with pre-bookings.

Travel for around five hours by private bus today and cross the border into Sweden. Head to the lakeside town Rättvik, a laidback place that encapsulates the most Swedish of Swedish landscapes, and which sits right in the middle of the Swedish lakes. Rättvik is a location steeped in history and culture that's ready to be discovered. Dalarna county is in the heart of the Sweden and is famous for the national symbol of the wooden Dala horse. Tonight, you will stay at in a peaceful setting of local B&B located 7 km outside of Rattvik.

  • Bed and Breakfast (1 night)

You are staying at a traditional Swedish countryside which has limited dining options especially in low season. Your leader will help you to facilitate your meals during this time.

This morning you'll get a chance to get under the surface of this region with a special guided village safari with local experts. You'll get to know the history behind the villages here and learn about the traditions of the area around Lake Siljan. A truly memorable experience, you'll visit a variety of villages, discover the traditional way of life and mingle with the locals. The rest of the day is free to explore the local area and its lakes. Perhaps take a leisurely historic boat trip across the lake, sink a line to partake in a little fishing, hike around the gentle rolling surrounds or enjoy local artisan shopping.

  • Bed & Breakfast (1 night)
  • Lake Siljan - Cultural Village tour with picnic lunch
  • Lake Siljan – Historic boat trip - SEK250
  • Lake Siljan – Canoe or SUP rental - SEK150

Leaving the Swedish lakes behind, head to the country's cultural, political and economic capital of Stockholm by train. Often referred to as the 'Venice of the North' and arguably Scandinavia 's most beautiful city, Stockholm is packed full of amazing architecture, pristine parks and clear waters. After an introductory orientation walk, use the rest of your day to settle into your accommodation and explore the area around you. You can perhaps head underground for the world’s longest art exhibition. Connecting the fourteen islands of the city and blasted through hard rocky ground, the subway (Tunnelbana) system's 100 stations are like the longest modern art exhibition in the world, featuring artwork from over 140 different artists. Enjoy the narrow cobble stone streets and the colourful merchant houses. Why not soak up the culture and try a cinnamon roll in Stockholm’s oldest café Sundbergs Konditori located on Jarntorget square, and dating from 1785.

Today's travel time is approximately 4 hours.

After breakfast, go on an included visit to the Vasa Museum on the inner-city island of Djurgarden. The 17th-century warship, Vasa, sank in 1628 on her maiden voyage in the harbour of Stockholm and was salvaged only in 1961. As one of the most visited sights in Sweden, the Vasa Museum collection consists of the Vasa itself and all of the objects that were found within the ship. The rest of the afternoon is all yours to explore as you wish, so why not leave the city behind for a few hours and see the waterways of Stockholm on a cruise past tiny islets and along narrow waterways? Consider taking a self-guided Millennium Walking Tour of Stockholm or visit the Abba Museum. Alternatively, you can take a trip to Drottningholm Palace, the residence of the Swedish royal family. There are plenty of sights and attractions to keep you busy here in this great Scandinavian city, so plan your activities wisely. Tonight perhaps head to Stockholm's Sodermalm district, the inner-city island with the best nightlife, full of hip shops, bars and cafes. Or maybe sit down at one of the city’s top-notch restaurants, such as the latest venues opened on the cobblestoned islet of Gamla Stan, or in the cool fusion restaurants of Kungsholmen.

  • Stockholm - Vasa Museum
  • Stockholm - Millennium Books Tour - SEK450
  • Stockholm - Drottningholm Palace - SEK150
  • Stockholm - Skansen Open Air Museum - SEK265
  • Stockholm - Abba Museum - SEK299
  • Stockholm - Fotografiska (Photography Museum) - SEK220
  • Stockholm - City Hall - SEK130
  • Stockholm - Nobel Prize Museum - SEK140
  • Stockholm - Nordic Museum - SEK170
  • Stockholm - Gröna Lund Amusement Park - SEK130
  • Stockholm - The Royal Palace - SEK180

We recommend you book your tickets to the Abba Museum in advance at: abbathemuseum.com/en/

Today is free for you to enjoy your last day in Sweden. In the evening, you'll be boarding an overnight ferry for Helsinki, Finland.

  • Overnight boat (1 night)

Please note that your cabins for the night are bunk bed cabins, however we have booked one cabin per 2 passengers to allow for a bit more room. Each cabin has a private bathroom.

After your morning arrival into Helsinki's port you will take a public transport to your hotel. Discover a wealth of historical sights and gastronomic wonders in Helsinki. Apart from a short orientation walk, today is completely free and you'll be able to explore Helsinki in your own time. A few options to consider during your time here are a visit to the city's cathedral or the interesting Design Museum. Don't miss the harbour-side market and market hall from 1889 for local oddities, and make sure you take a short ferry ride to the magnificent Suomenlinna Sea Fortress, sometimes referred to as the Gibraltar of the North, a World Heritage-listed site that was once an important point of defence for the city. Surrounded by the sea, Helsinki is a modern European city that offers an endless array of options. Throughout its 450-year history, the city has often been the buffer between the east and west. This is shown in their cuisine, with a mix of root vegetables, berries and fresh fish. Perhaps head out in the evening to sample some traditional dishes at dinner with your group.

Upon your morning arrival check-in at our hotel in Helsinki may not yet be possible. In this case, you will store your luggage at the hotel and head out for an orientation walk. You will be able to check into your room later on.

Your adventure comes to an end after breakfast today. There are no more activities planned and you're able to depart the accommodation at any time. If you would like to extend your stay in Helsinki we are happy to book additional accommodation for you, subject to availability. Please speak to your travel consultant at the time of booking.

Ffestiniog travel, celebrating 50 years of rail holidays.

Rail Tour specialist Ffestiniog Travel will mark its milestone 50th anniversary year in October with a special celebratory tour to Switzerland – the destination of its very first escorted tour in 1974 – complete with the original tour leaders!

Mountain

The company's founder Alan Heywood established the rail tour company while working as Traffic and Commercial Manager at the Ffestiniog Railway in North Wales. Through conversations with visitors to the heritage railway he realised there was a strong interest to travel further afield by train and experience scenic rail journeys around Europe.

In October 1974 Alan, now 83 years old, escorted his very first overseas tour to Switzerland, a destination he knew would appeal to those who enjoyed the railways of the Welsh Highlands! Such was the interest that a second tour had to be laid on to accommodate over 70 travellers!

Fifty years on and history could repeat itself with the October 2024 celebratory tour fully booked! Alan, who is now a Ffestiniog Travel Board Director and still an active tour leader, will escort travellers on the Swiss celebratory tour alongside fellow original tour leader Liz Turner.

He comments: “We felt it was fitting to return to the place where it all began. Switzerland continues to be one of our most popular rail holiday destinations as it’s amazing railways, that travel through stunning Alpine scenery, never disappoint. I feel very fortunate and privileged to have been able to share my passion for rail travel with thousands of travellers who have joined me on so many wonderful train journeys around the world since 1974.”

Ffestiniog Travel is now a separate company from the Ffestiniog Railway (FR), but it is still owned by the Ffestiniog Railway Trust and has remained loyal to its roots, with profits donated to the Trust for preservation work on the FR which now includes the Welsh Highland Railway too. To date Ffestiniog Travel has donated over £1 million to help finance new carriages, a locomotive and various infrastructure projects.

Alan added; “Ffestiniog Travel, still a small independent tour operator, was one of the first UK rail holiday companies and has remained true to its specialism, creating quality rail holidays, for 50 years. Nowadays our destinations are worldwide and we embrace tailor made individual customers and private groups as well as our traditional escorted rail holidays.

“What we are also proud of is our commitment to promoting rail travel and supporting heritage railways around the world, from financial support to the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways to escorting travellers to the many vintage, steam and narrow gauge lines around the world that continue to provide inspiration for our rail holidays.”

The company continues to create new and interesting tours with 8 new escorted rail holidays departing in 2025 alongside regular favourites. Alan shares his top picks of new tours for the year ahead:

Shetland & Orkney – Wildlife & History – Departs 27 May 2025 – 15 days from £3,475pp

A comprehensive tour of these beautiful islands, alive with wildlife and steeped in history, starting in Glasgow and ending in Edinburgh. Enjoy stays in Aberdeen and Inverness and steaming along on the Keith & Dufftown and Strathspey Railways.

Just a few of the majestic sights you’ll take in during your trip.

NORWAY IN A NUTSHELL®

Flåm railway (flåmsbana), aurlandsfjord, fjords in norway.

A day-by-day plan to guide your journey.

Day 1: Welcome to Oslo

When you arrive at Oslo ‘s Gardermoen Airport, make your way into Oslo‘s city centre. Many travellers opt to take the express train to Oslo Central Station, but we can arrange a private transfer for you (at additional cost). For those arriving early, we recommend exploring Oslo by foot, spending the afternoon at sights including the Munch Museum, Akershus fortress , Oslo Opera House , and the Aker Brygge area.

Spend the night in Oslo.

Day 2: Explore the Highlights of Oslo

This morning, get an early start to explore the Norwegian capital at your own pace. We recommend booking a guided bus tour that will take you along the famous landmarks of the city. Highlights include the beautiful Vigeland Sculpture Park , the Royal Palace , Akershus fortress , and Oslo City Hall . Another option is to tour Oslo on your own visiting some of the above attractions, or others like the Kon-Tiki Museum, Fram Polar Ship Museum and Karl Johans street.

Spend the night in Oslo

Day 3: Norway in a Nutshell in Winter - The Flåm Railway

Get an early start and head to Oslo Central Station, where you’ll begin the Norway in a Nutshell® railway journey towards Bergen , with an overnight stop in Flåm . This train ride takes you over Norway’s “mountainous rooftops”, through charming villages like Gol and  Geilo . In Myrdal, you’ll switch trains to the famous Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana) for an incredible ride to the beautiful village of Flåm. Enjoy a relaxing day in Flåm, where you can follow one of the many hiking trails in the mountains around the village.

Spend the night in Flåm.

We recommend booking luggage transfer for the travel between Oslo and Bergen.

Day 4: Explore Scenic Flåm

Spend the day exploring the beauty of Flåm and its surroundings. In this tour package, you get free admission to the Flåm Railway Documentation Centre, where you can learn about the construction of this railway.  It is also recommended to join an optional tour to the Stegastein viewpoint. The viewing platform extends about 30 metres from the cliffside and 650 metres above the fjords, offering extraordinary and unbeatable views of the lovely winter landscape. For those who want to explore the fjords even further, you can enjoy an optional fjord safari.

Spend another night in Flåm.

Day 5: Norway in a Nutshell to Bergen

In the morning, you’ll board a boat to sail through Aurlandsfjord into the World Heritage-listed Nærøyfjord, the narrowest fjord in all of Europe. This is perhaps the most beautiful arm of Sognefjord , with its mighty waterfalls and small farms clinging to the steep mountainsides, which is especially beautiful in the winter months. The boat docks in Gudvangen, and from there the journey continues by bus through Nærøydalen, with its charming villages and scenic winter landscape. The bus will arrive in Voss, where you continue the tour by train on the Bergen Railway to Bergen .

Spend the night in Bergen.

Day 6: The Capital of the Fjords

Despite being an international city, Bergen, “The Capital of the Fjords”, has all the charms of a small town. Here you’ll find  Bryggen , a UNESCO World Heritage site, along with remarkably preserved old houses, a lively fish and flower market, cable cars offering stunning views, great museums and more.  We recommend riding the Fløibanen Funicular to Mount Fløyen to enjoy the panoramic view of the city or a cable car up Mt. Ulriken. Bergen is also known for its museums dedicated to history within trade and fisheries, architecture, musical art and contemporary art.

Spend another night in Bergen.

Day 7: Departure from Bergen

When it’s time for your trip to come to an end, make your way back to Bergen-Flesland Airport. You can either take the airport bus from one of the many departure points in the Bergen city centre or you can take a taxi directly from your hotel to Bergen-Flesland Airport. If your flight is in the afternoon, you can choose to enjoy some last-minute shopping, visit one of Bergen‘s many museums or relax at a café, enjoying the last few moments of this amazing journey.

For those departing from Oslo, we offer direct train transfer back to Oslo. Please keep in mind you might need to book an additional night if your flight is early during the day.

Please wait to book flights to Scandinavia until we can confirm your desired travel dates for this tour. This is due to varying availabilities on services included in this package.

After making a booking with Nordic Visitor, it might take a few weeks to confirm your travel arrangements. We recommend booking your flights once your personal travel consultant gets in touch to confirm your itinerary.

If you have any questions about your flights and itinerary, please contact us for more details.

Yes, you can customise this tour online. During the booking process, you can add extra nights to your itinerary as well as optional day trips, excursions and upgrades.

This tour includes the famous Norway in a Nutshell tour from Oslo to Bergen. This is one of Norway’s most iconic journeys. You’ll travel by train, bus and ferry, seeing beautiful landscapes of steep mountains, frosty waterfalls, shimmering fjords, charming villages and scenic coastline.

The first leg of the journey is from Oslo to Flåm. Then you'll be travelling from Flåm to Bergen. The duration of both days will be around 6 hours.

The connections will be announced and clearly explained in your travel documents. You will receive a ticket with all the information about transfer points and timings with your final travel documents.

On your Norway tour, you’ll stay in accommodation that’s been hand-picked by our travel experts. We’ve partnered with local businesses and selected hotels and guesthouses based on excellent ratings, comfort and our personal experience.

During the booking process, you can select whether you want Comfort Plus or Superior accommodation. Comfort Plus usually consists of standard rooms in good quality and comfortable 3-star hotels. Superior is standard rooms in 4-star hotels combined with Superior rooms in premium 3-star hotels.

You will also be able to choose between single, double or triple rooms. Please note that in Norway room types are based on European standard sizes, which means they are smaller than in North America.

For example, a double bed often consists of 2 single beds pushed together. Twin rooms are 2 separate single beds. Triple rooms include a double bed along with an extra single bed, rollaway or sofa bed. And single rooms are often smaller than the standard double.

If you have anything specific in mind, please contact us to discuss customising your accommodation options.

By booking with Nordic Visitor, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that there’s always someone there for you throughout your trip.

For support and advice during the day, you can call our office. And if anything unexpected happens outside working hours, you can reach us on our 24/7 helpline.

During your tour, there will always be a travel expert on call to handle any unforeseen situations, such as unusual weather or events.

If you have a passport from Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia or New Zealand, you won’t need a visa to visit Norway. This visa-free entry is valid for up to 90 days.

Visiting from another country? You can find out whether you require a visa to enter Norway on the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. Select your home country to view details. If you do require a visa, you will be directed to your local embassy website to learn about the visa requirements.

Your passport must also be valid for at least 3 months from your departure from Norway. It’s good to check your passport expiry date early in case you need to renew it.

Travelling with your kids? No problem! You'll be able to enter your children’s ages during the booking process.

For infants (0 to 2 years old), please let us know in the details if you’d like a baby cot.

For kids 3-11 years old, we’ll automatically book an extra bed for your trip.

Only you can pick the best time to visit Norway for your trip. It’ll depend on how much time you have to explore and what you want to see and do in Norway.

During the summer months, June , July and August , you’ll have the warmest temperatures and longest daylight hours of the year. This is ideal for outdoor excursions and taking full advantage of your days for sightseeing.

If you’d like to experience the top attractions with fewer visitors around then you could book a summer itinerary in May or September . These shoulder season months generally have more tour and attraction availability.

Please note that if you travel in spring, end of March through April , you’ll find that many attractions and museums are operating on reduced winter hours.

The winter months are also popular, but generally quieter. Travel to Norway at this time of year to see snowy mountains, cruise along frosty fjords and chase the magnificent northern lights.

If you head north in December and January , you could experience the polar night. At this time of year, the conditions are also ideal for winter activities such as dog sledding, snowmobiling and more.

Read more about the best time to visit Norway on our blog.

Because of its northerly location close to and inside the Arctic Circle, Norway has limited daylight in winter.

In the south, you can expect more daylight than in the north. For example, in Tromsø, you’ll have less than 7 hours of daylight from late October. Then from late November to mid-January, the sun never rises. This is called the “polar night”.

In Oslo and Bergen, you’ll get 5–10 hours of daylight across the winter.

The beauty of these extended hours of darkness in Norway is that you’ll have a better chance of seeing the northern lights.

Find out what the daylight hours will be during the month of your visit in this guide to time and daylight in Norway .

The winter climate in Norway is generally cold, but the weather will vary greatly depending on where you visit.

From November, the temperatures fall and around the country you can expect averages between 1–5°C (34–41°F). This is also the time of year where snow starts falling and you’ll be able to admire the white-topped mountains.

For the rest of the winter, December until March, you’ll probably experience temperatures below freezing, around 0 to -7°C (31–19°F). This means you should come prepared with warm, insulated clothes and outer layers.

Read Norway weather conditions for more information on the local climate.

Please note that sightseeing is dependent on weather and road conditions. Your itinerary might need to be altered if these conditions are not favourable during your visit.

During Norway’s winter season, you can expect temperatures below freezing. For that reason, you’ll want to pack and dress with plenty of layers to keep yourself warm and dry.

Here is an essential winter packing list for your trip to Norway:

  • Insulated and waterproof jacket
  • Cosy wool or fleece jumpers
  • Snow or waterproof trousers depending on your destination
  • Warm gloves, hat and scarf
  • Insulated boots
  • A few pairs of thermal socks
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Electronic gear such as smartphone, external powerpack, and travel adapters
  • and don’t forget your camera!

If you’re heading north and plan on taking part in winter excursions, you could also bring glove liners and heat packs for extra warmth.

Some day tour operators will provide you with thermal suits for your comfort. To find out if equipment is provided check the details of each activity before you leave for Norway, or get in touch with your personal travel consultant.

For more information, check out this Norway packing list .

When you travel with Nordic Visitor, breakfast at your Norway accommodation is always included.  For the rest of your meals, the amount of spending money you need will depend on the standard of restaurants you decide to go to.

That said, we recommend budgeting between 100–400 NOK for lunch per person, each day. Dinners at casual restaurants might cost between 500–1,000 NOK. Meanwhile, at upscale restaurants, you can expect to pay 1,500 NOK or more. This does not include the cost of alcoholic beverages.

It’s best to book as soon as you can to secure your preferred travel dates. Once you have picked your tour, check the availability calendar to see which months are open for booking. Then, select the date you want and complete your booking.

We recommend waiting for a confirmation from your travel consultant to ensure your travel dates are available. You’ll then be able to purchase your flights with confidence.

If you like to plan well ahead, you’ll find that it’s possible to book many tours for the following year. And if you have any questions or need advice, you can always contact us .

After booking your tour package online, you will be contacted within 2 business days by your own dedicated travel consultant. They will be your point of contact for all your travel needs before, during and even after your trip.

We aim to complete bookings within a few weeks. During this time we take care of booking your accommodation, activities, and transport, confirming all parts of your journey. Once this is done, your travel consultant will provide you with all the details of your trip.

When we get back to you might depend slightly on how far ahead you’ve booked your travels and other tours running at the time.

No need! Nordic Visitor is already working on offsetting the estimated carbon footprint of your package. We’ve partnered with an environmental fund in Iceland to carbon offset all our tours.

Carbon offsetting your international flights is not included, but we highly recommend you look into possibilities with your airline or directly through a local environment fund.

If you have any questions before your trip, you can get in touch with our Norway travel experts. The live chat option is useful for getting a quick reply as someone answers live every day during office opening hours.

Once you’ve booked, we’ll provide you with a travel guide packed full of local tips and top attractions for your visit. You can also check out our online Norway Travel Guide where we’ve compiled useful information about topics, including:

  • Which currency is used in Norway and which credit cards are widely accepted
  • What kind of electric adapters or converters you’ll need
  • Which languages do Norwegian speak (yes, English is one of them!)
  • How to get a refund on tax-free shopping
  • As well as tipping, buying snacks, and other useful information

After you have booked your tour, it will only take a few days to confirm its availability. But it may take a few weeks to create your itinerary and book everything.

Once your trip details are finalised, we’ll send you e-copies of your travel documents. This will include your personalised itinerary, our Norway Travel Guide and your service vouchers. We recommend printing your tickets and vouchers to bring with you to Norway.

When you depart may depend on the time of your return flight. Check out early if you’re heading to the airport for a morning flight. On the other hand, if you’re flying home later in the day, you might like to enjoy a leisurely day or visit one more attraction.

You will usually need to check out from your room around 10–11 AM. If you’re staying in town longer, you will be able to store your luggage at the hotel reception. Simply return later to collect your bags before making your way to the airport.

All bookings are billed in Euro (EUR). Prices displayed in other currencies are indicative only and based on the daily exchange rate. This means conversions from EUR to other currencies will fluctuate from day to day.

These pictures may be small, but Norway’s mountains & fjords are massive.
