Kodachadri Trekking Guide:

There are two trekking routes to the Kodachadri peak. One is from the Kattinahole through Hidlumane falls and another trekking route is through Santhosh hotel, Valur. Both of the trekking routes will be explained below.

Kodachadri trek via Hidlumane falls Kattinahole

If you want to attempt the Kodachadri trek via Hidlumane falls then you will have to start from the Kattinahole. There is no proper trail from the Kattinahole to the Hidlumane falls as it crosses farms, villages, grasslands, and uneven trails. However, there is a proper trail from Hidlumane Falls to the Kodachadri peak which joins the Kodachadri jeep trail until the peak

  • Kodachadri trek distance via Hidlumane falls: Around 10 Kms
  • Trekking time: Around 6 Hours (Including breaks & fun at the Hidlumane falls)

Kodachadri trek via Santhosh hotel, Valur.

The second route starts from Sampekette-Kollur-Nagara road. Just search on Google maps for Kodachadri Trek Trail, Nagodi, Karnataka  and it will land you there. From there, there is a direct trail to the peak.

  • Kodachadri trek distance via Santhosh hotel, Valur: Around 10 Kms
  • Trekking time: Around 7 Hours

Kodachadri Camping information & Permission:

You are not allowed to pitch the tent at the Kodachadri peak. By sunset, you will have to return to the Kodachadri Information bureau/ the PWD house where you can pitch your tent but only after asking their permission. Sometimes, they charge for camping also like rupees 150 per head.

The Kodachadri trek falls in the middle of Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary but you don’t need any permission for the trek of Kodachadri. But if you are planning to stay or camp peak of Kodachadri hills during the night then that is not allowed. You will need to plan your stay to nearby places like Kollur andKundapura.

Best time to visit

Just after the Monsoon ends or during the winter days are the best period from my personal understanding to visit Kodachadri trek. But some people also prefer to visit during monsoons and summers as the view is far more clearer as post-monsoon and winter you might encounter fog while trekking. If anyone wishes to enjoy some real challenges of trekking then do visit this place during the peak monsoon along with the right gears for the trek.

Things to Carry

The best thing about the Kodachadri trek is that it is just one day trek. So it is not required to carry too many things which will make the already difficult trek difficult. But please do carry the essentials mentioned below:

  • First Aid Kit
  • Identity Proof
  • Water (1 to 2 liters)
  • Packed Lunch
  • Extra Clothes
  • Light Snacks

Kodachadri Jeep Ride

There are two options for the Kodachadri jeep ride. One is from the Kattinahole side and another is from the Kollur side. Both of the options have been explained below:

Kodachadri Jeep ride detailsfrom Kattinahole:

  • Jeep ride cost: Rs. 2000-2500 rupees (negotiable)
  • Number of people: Maximum 8 people per Jeep
  • Shared price: 200-300 per head in a shared jeep
  • Jeep location: Main jeep stand
  • Jeep ride timings: 30 mins one way or one hour to and fro
  • Extra time given at the top: 2 Hours
  • Sunset point from the Jeep drop point at the top: 2 km (40 minutes walk)
  • Kodachadri Jeep Timing: starting 6 AM in the morning

By Jeep to Kodachadri from the Kollur town:

  • Booking entire jeep: Rs. 2000-2500 rupees (negotiable)
  • Forest department opening time: Kodachadri Jeep starts at 6 AM in the morning

Kodachadri HomeStay:

There are a lot of Homestay locations around Kodachadri hills. Even there are many other options to stay in the nearby towns around which Homestays are located. But it is important to choose where to stay and which homestay to live in. The best place for Homestay that I would like to recommend will be Kattinahole. There is a lot of options for the homestays around Kattinahole.

Here is a list of the Kodachadri homestays around Kattinahole:

1. Chitrakuta Homestay 2. Sri Ambika homestay

These two homestays are located in the area called Mathikai which is around 3 Kms from the Kattinahole Kodachadri Jeep stand from where you can get a jeep ride to the Kodachadri peak. There is another Homestay near Kattinahole Jeep stand which has got some of the best Google reviews is Kodachadri Pathalagere Homestay Or Resort . The best option would be to stay in the Kodachadri Pathalagere Homestay Or Resort.

How to reach Kodachadri from Bangalore?

Kodachadri is situated at a distance of around 420 km from Bangalore. If you are not going to Kodachadri through any other trekking organization but you are going on your own then you might have decided to drive there. The distance of 420 Km can be covered in around 8 hours from Bangalore to Kodachadri.

The Best Driving route from Bangalore to Kodachadri: Driving along with AH 47

This route includes driving along with AH 47 or the Bangalore-Pune highway most of the time. The route includes Tumkur, Sira, Chitradurga, and finally, you take a left from Davangere. The drive until Davangere is around 250 Kms which takes around four and a half hours. Kodachadri Trek: The All-Round Trek In Karnataka

' src=

It’s been close to 7 years since my first hike in Goa. I’ve done close to 50 treks since then. But if there was one thing about a trek that eluded me for a long long time, it was the variety on the trail. One a fine Friday evening I packed my bags and started for Kodachadri to find out if this trail had what it took to satiate my hunger for variety. The Mookimabika wildlife sanctuary, apart from being the home to the 10th highest peak in Karnataka, the Kodachadri peak, also is the origin of two rivers. The Chakra and Sowparnika rivers originate in the Kodachadri hills and flow westward to join the Arabian sea near Kundapura.

During my research, I had a feeling that it might be the trail I’ve been looking for. It has the lush green meadows, towering steep climbs, milky white waterfalls but I had to hit the ground to see if it really ticked off all the boxes. Will it? Come, see it yourself while I take you on my quest to find the perfect trekking trail.

Friday Escapades

After what seemed like a never-ending Friday, I finally packed my bag and left my house to board the bus at HSR layout. And like every Trek with Plan The Unplanned, ice breakers followed once everyone boarded the bus. Every traveler I met was so welcoming and cheerful that there was never a dull moment in the entire journey.

The icebreakers set the perfect stage for the adventure of a lifetime. This was the first long-distance trek for a majority of the group. But after a few games that helped us throw the word stranger out of the running bus, everyone was equally excited about the trek. We were gonna scale the mountain as on team :D.

Tranquil Mornings En Route Kodachadri

While most of the journey is on the highway the landscape transforms as you approach Hosanagara. It was probably 6 AM that I woke up as if some natural alarm banged my eyes open. I pushed the curtains aside and realized it wasn’t the natural alarm but nature itself. We were driving by a beautiful river. Since it was still early in the morning the water was still and the light was just enough for a perfect reflection.

I pulled out my phone to find out the name of the river. But to my surprise, it wasn’t a river but a drainage basin of the Sharavathi reservoir. We were almost at the edge of Sharavathi Valley. Monsoons are the best time to travel in this region of Karnataka. Due to the incessant rains, the entire landscape is painted in green.

After some time we crossed Nagara and entered another forest stretch. The sun had slowly started to rise. And the gaps between the trees slowly started to turn orange like how a flower bud blooms revealing the bright orange of a daisy. The cold wid, dewdrops on the window, a slowly rising sun, and sprawling lush greenery. The entire journey felt as if it was setting me up for the journey ahead.

Intro To Eco-Tourism In Kodachadri!

Kodachadri trek is also very famous and unlike Kudremukh there is no restriction on the number of people allowed. So it is quite important to start the trek early to avoid the crowd. So, We quickly freshened up, had the delicious breakfast, packed our lunch boxes, and boarded the bus to reach the trek starting point where we also met our guide.

In Kodachadri, It is compulsory to take a guide along with you for the trek. In a bid to support the locals and preserve forests, the forest department encourages locals to become guides. Our guide during my first trip to Kodachadri worked in Shivamogga during the weekdays and guides travelers over the weekend to reach Kodachadri Peak.

He briefed us about the trek and we started the trek from the jeep stand. The trail road was surrounded by dense forest on one side and quaint homes on the other. The road kept my mind busy. If it was the kids playing outside their houses a few times, it was the music of running water streams that kept me busy during the other times. And soon after we crossed the last house, we were surrounded by dense fog.

Foggy Mornings On Kodachadri Trail

All the huge trees suddenly vanished from our sight leaving a faded silhouette. The guide was walking ahead and due to the dense fog, we couldn’t see ahead. So we had to literally run to keep up with the guide’s pace. Soon the guide appeared and he asked us to wait at the diversion while he went to the forest check post to buy entry tickets for us.

Into The Wilderness Of Kodachadri Hills

Once the guide was back, he asked us to take the right turn away from the jeep road. All we could see was a running stream. So we looked back at him again and he said, we gotta cross the stream. Although the stream wasn’t very deep, crossing it meant our shoes would get wet. But you gotta do what you gotta do, even if it means getting your shoes wet even before the trek hardly started.

Soon after crossing the stream, we spend some time to run off the water and resumed the trek. As we followed the trail, I spotted a beautiful house by the trail. Looking at the betel nut trees around the house, the cloud kissing mountains in the background, and the dense forest in between them, I felt as it was transferred to earth from a heavenly planet.

kodachadri trek in july

We continued walking on the trail and soon it became even narrower. The trail was flat but during the monsoons, it was infested with leeches. As if that’s not enough, the entire trail becomes muddy and slippery in monsoons. With one careful step after the other, I continued the hike in the jungle. The initial stretch of the trail kept me so busy that I was constantly ducking under the branches, pushing that odd branch of leaves hanging stiffly in front of me, watching my step carefully.

kodachadri trek in july

Because the trail is surrounded by tall trees, I didn’t get any view of the mountains or the peak. But what kept me entertained were the tree trunks. They came in all shapes and sizes. While most of the tree trunks were regular & rounded, a few of them had flanges and a few more had a combination of rounded trunks with flanges.

Level 2: Bhattara Mane, Kodachadri

We continued the walk under the shade, humming that odd song while the rustling of leaves, the burble of the water stream, and chirps of crickets added the chorus. Soon the distance between the trees started to increase and the trail got wider as if it was opening to the portal to another world.

kodachadri trek in july

And just when I thought that, it was actually a portal. The trail lead us into a wide open ground, the kinds I remember playing cricket in my childhood. It almost felt like I was let go by a giant after holding me tight in his fists for an hour. While the cold wind on that open ground was in itself a huge reward, the mountain views in front of us just multiplied it.

Pro-tip : If you’re trekking in monsoons, be sure to not stop in damp areas unless you’re desperate for a blood-sucking relationship with leeches ;).

We continued the hike and after 50 meters or so, we saw another house. Fondly called as Battara Mane by the locals, it’s another police check post cum rest point. We recited our names to the guards like kids reciting ABCD and drank the thirst-quenching buttermilk which costs INR 15. The buttermilk got me thinking if the name was actually Butter Mane but then who cares about the English spellings for Kannada words.

kodachadri trek in july

After a brief rest, we continued the hike. The view of Banana field, paddy fields, the betel nut trees, and ultimately the wild-wild forest must be having every shade of green ever known. I kept staring at this view as it felt so peaceful and I thought I won’t get this view again But once I started the trek from Bhattara Mane, the trail turned towards the paddy fields. We walked right through them reminding me of my childhood time in our paddy fields.

A Hike Along The Waterfalls

As the trail leads us into the deep forest, the chirps, burble, and the shade returned. The stream was so close to the trail and loud that it almost muted any dialogue between us. So with nothing to do but walk and listen to the lovely music of nature, we marched ahead.

kodachadri trek in july

We soon came face to face with a waterfall that had a nice little jacuzzi at the bottom. The guide informed us that this was the lowermost waterfall of the Hidlumane falls. Wondering how many more were there in front of us I continued the trek.

I crossed the jacuzzi by carefully placing my steps on the shaky stones & ducking under a tree trunk to reach a rock. I climbed the rock and continued the hike on the muddy trail. A few minutes later, the muddy trail ended forcing me to get onto the rocky and slippery trail.

But at times, walking on slippery rocks is all you HAVE to do.

As I stood at the edge of the muddy trail, examining the trail ahead, a zillion ideas crossed my mind on how I can fall off and break my back. The trail had patches of rocks covered with algae. If that wasn’t enough, the rocks were slippery and inclined at a few locations. It’s a total nightmare when you place those slippery rocks under the blanket of a gushing water stream. This same stretch is very harmless after monsoons.

Walking On The Rocks-101

But such is trek life man, you never know what you are gonna encounter ahead. But this part of the trail taught me enough lessons on how to pick a choice. As I continued the trek, placing my feet carefully in between rocks and stretch to reach the next safe place and then did it all over again for a continuous 10 minutes. It was definitely a moment that made me think on my toes. But nature has it’s ways of rewarding your efforts and I realized this as I reached another waterfall. I thought this was the Hidlumane waterfalls and was getting excited that there wasn’t anyone there.

kodachadri trek in july

The guide told me as I approached the waterfall that it was the mid-zone waterfall en route Hidlumane Falls. I sighed and continued turned around.

Soon after I turned around, I was surprised. There was an almost 60-degree steep slope staring right at my face. As if the rocky terrain earlier wasn’t enough, this steep slope was also completely rocky with stepping stones appearing sporadically.

kodachadri trek in july

It was again, just a matter of time before we conquered that rock as well and the trail rewarded us with another relaxing flat muddy trail. This muddy trail had its own ups and downs like a snake moving perpendicular to the ground.

Reaching The Milky White Waterfalls

Perhaps the trail wasn’t very happy with our progress as it abruptly ended the muddy trail pushing us into the running stream. Without any sane option left for us, we continued the trek through the stream. Finding one sturdy rock after another, we reached a crossed over to the other side of this stream.

In one of the corners of the stream, I was lucky to find just enough light to attempt a long exposure shot. So I sat down and started clicking pictures. The gushing water or the slippery rocks, nothing seemed to make a dent in my determination. And after multiple attempts, I finally clicked my first ever, silky smooth waterfall picture.

kodachadri trek in july

I continued the walk on this narrow rocky terrain and soon the milky white stream of water running over the pitch-black rocks drew our attention. The guide signaled that it was indeed the ever-gorgeous Hidlumane Falls. I was surprised looking at the crowd. The second time when we started at around 8 AM, we had almost the entire falls for ourselves. However, on the other two occasions, we had to share it with, god knows how many.

kodachadri trek in july

Pro-Tip: So, it makes a hell lot of a difference at the waterfalls if you start early.

The falls create a jacuzzi under it which is just knee-deep. So, I left my baggage on the rocks by the falls, walked up to the falls, and sat down on the rocks right below the falls. The force of the stream was just right and it relieved me of all the stress of the trek. The sound was so loud that it almost created a barrier around me that didn’t let any other noise be heard. Sitting under the waterfalls is a meditative experience that I strongly recommend you to do.

Up, Up Here We Go! Where We Stop Nobody Knows

We played in the jacuzzi, clicked lot of pictures and started the hike again.

The trail starts with a rock climb right from the edge of the water stream. With wet shoes, wet and dripping clothes, it’s a huge task for anyone. But we weren’t anyone 😉 we were a lot of ones :P. We helped each other climb up the rock by lending support and pulling them up.

But soon after the climb, I realized that it was just a teaser of what’s ahead. Just a few steps after climbing up the rock, a steep muddy trail welcomed us. We climbed up slowly, one step after another, and reached the top. As if it was a video game, the trail leveled up and introduced a hairpin steep climb. While the entry was easier, to exit the steep climb, we literally had to hold any tiny plants we could to not fall back.

kodachadri trek in july

Soon after that, it was time for the next level. Where there were tree trunks placed on the steep trail. We crossed over them and climbed up another steep slope to exit the forest cover.

The excitement of climbing up the steep slope didn’t last long when I looked at the trail ahead. All I could see was another towering, endless steep slope, filled with pebbles. We were already exhausted with all the climb. So we took a much-needed break before starting the ascent for what I came to learn as the Everest meadow.

kodachadri trek in july

It was a very apt name considering the effort it takes to reach there.

Climbing The Everest Of South India

After a short break, I started the climb again. Taking it slow, one step at a time, bending forward to ease the strain on the knees. Halfway through on this trail strong wind started blowing sideways, trying to topple my balance, and the small pebbles made it difficult to get a good grip to walk straight ahead.

View Of The Steep Climb From Everest Meadow

So I resorted to a zig-zag motion and finally reached the top of the Everest meadow. I turned around to look at the trail I walked on but I saw something much more exciting. In the distance, beyond a small mountain, I observed amoeba-like water bodies. Is that what I think it is?, I asked myself looking at those water bodies in the distance.

View Of Sharavati Valley From Everest Meadow

Of course, it is what it is, the enchanting Sharavati Valley. I was so exciting seeing the valley that I didn’t give a damn about the drama that’s happening over the meadows in front of me. I fell in love reading about the biodiversity of the Sharavati valley and how it’s the only wildlife sanctuary in the world set up for the rare Lion Tailed Macaque. The view is etched in my mind even though my camera did a half baked job to capture it.

Everest meadow marks the second milestone of the trek and it was time for lunch. We opened our packed lunches & boy any Meghana or Paradise or Hyderbadi House biryani is no match to that Puliogare. Knowing myself, I knew it was a momentary feeling. It’s probably because of the tiredness from the trek or the surroundings that I still vividly remember the taste.

View Of Kodachadri Meadows From Everest Meadow

After that tasty lunch and recuperating some energy, we started the hike again. The trail flattened out over the edge of a meadow, followed by another steep descent, followed by few more minutes of flat trail and another moderately steep ascent later, we reached the jeep road. It is in this part of the trail that the meadows of Kodachadri Hills were distinctly visible. The lush green meadows during monsoons turn golden by the end of winter.

Seasons change, the colors change but my love for mountains never changes!

Giving Back To The Nature

During the second trek when the monsoons were at their peak, we stopped n the flat stretch after Everest meadow to plant seed balls. It was a noble initiative by Plan The Unplanned to plant seed balls along the trail so that people, animals, insects can reap the benefits. Seedballs are nothing but seeds wrapped in a solidified mixture of cow dung, cow urine & mud.

kodachadri trek in july

One of the biggest advantages of seed balls is that you don’t have to dig but just press the seed balls against the soft ground. This was the real deal of giving it back to nature. After all, we were just borrowing the resources it provided us thus far. I felt so happy doing that activity & felt even better while explaining what we were doing off the trail to other trek groups 😀

Kudos to Plan The Unplanned for such beautiful initiatives.

Amazing Conversations En Route Mookambika Temple

The guide informed us that we were still about 4 KM away from the peak. So we continued walking on the jeep road. It was a comfortable walk barring close encounters with skidding jeeps at the corners of the road. The entire road is surrounded by trees on either side. It is on this part of the trail that I had some of the most interesting conversations in all the three treks. Probably because it wasn’t too hard to walk on, or there was nothing visible to see or click pictures of, or even because of the renewed energy from the lunch earlier.

kodachadri trek in july

It was roughly 3:30 PM by the time we reached the Mookambika temple. We still had about 4 KMs left for the day, ascent and descent combined. Owing to the restrictions on vehicular movement into the sanctuary, we had to reach the temple back by 5 PM. While few wanted to rest at the temple, a majority if not all of the trek team signed up for the timed challenge. The temple is another place of religious importance not just for the locals but also for people from faraway lands. Mookambika Temple in the Kodachadri hills is dedicated to Goddess Mookambika who is believed to have killed a notorious demon named Mookasura.

Life Lessons From Trekking

The trail starts with a steep ramp built over rocks and turns leftward into another rocky steep climb. The end of this steep climb reveals the ridges and cliffs of Kodachadri Hills. Most of these ridges and cliffs were hiding behind a blanket of fog during the monsoons. But during the winter trip, I witnessed the raw beauty of Kodachadri Trek. I realized during the third trek that I was walking along the edge of a cliff during monsoons. Any mistake, I would’ve ended up deep inside the shola forests of Kodachadri hills and probably wouldn’t be alive to even write this travelogue.

kodachadri trek in july

But, what were the odds of me falling off the trail?

Probably very very slim. Owing to my experience of trekking in the monsoons, the sturdy shoes, fit body, I can safely say that the chances were slim. But it sends a shiver down my spine when I think about the consequences of this low-probability event. The event if occurred would have dramatically changed my life forever, even put a permanent stop to my trekking self.

The Steep Drops Just Besides The Trail

I learned that it is these low-probability high impact events are all that matter in life. We usually keep thinking about high probability activities like graduating, getting a job, getting married, and living a comfortable life. But instead, it’s those life-changing, low-probability events like losing your job to a pandemic and their consequences are what we should spend our time on and prepare ourselves.

The Final Countown To The Kodachadri Peak

It took me a while to get my mind back to normalcy after that realization. After a series of steep climbs over rocks, accompanied by the wilderness of Kodachadri hills by the cliff-side, we reached the Kodachadri Peak. Sarvajna Peetham marks the end of the trek to Kodachadri Peak. Sarvajna Peetham is where Adi Shankaracharya meditated and attained “the wisdom of the world” hence the name Sarvajna Peetham. Though there are controversies over the period in which Shankaracharya lived, the Sarvana Peetham atop the Kodachadri Peak is at least 1200 years old.

kodachadri trek in july

The view from the Kodachadri peak is washed out in monsoons. But I was lucky to see the beautiful landscape from the peak during the third trek. Apparently, one could see the Arabian Sea from the peak but to say the truth, I couldn’t see it. The wind was fast and cold, carrying the sweat of tiredness away from our faces, filling in a sense of joy & victory. The joy of reaching the peak restored in us the strength to trek through even tougher terrains and tougher times, both in the trek or otherwise :D.

Kodachadri Peak Conquered- Thrice

We trekked back to Mookambika temple where we had hot and delicious bajjis before getting on to the jeep. The Kodachadri jeep ride is one of the most adventurous rides you will ever go on. The road is muddy, slippery & dangerous. If you want to best enjoy this ride sit in the front row near the door. But promise me you won’t fall asleep as I did 😛

Post Trek Rituals At Kodachadri

At roughly 6:30 PM we reached the homestay. Took a nice warm shower and had the delicious dinner. Games, Bonfire, dance, and music followed. Amidst all the fun, I happened to look up and boy the sky was so inviting. I quickly grabbed my phone and walked away from the light into the darkness.

kodachadri trek in july

The road was pitch dark and after a few meters, I stood there, under the starry sky hearing nothing but the rustling of the leaves of betel nut trees. While I was busy get the right picture, I heard some strange sounds. I was sure that it was the rustling of the leaves above. So, I left the starry night alone to live another day 😛

Trip Back In Time- Nagara Fort

We started early at around 8:30 AM from home stay after having yet another delicious meal at the homestay. The next destination was Nagara Fort. An 18th Century fort belonging to the Keladi Dynasty.

kodachadri trek in july

Although the fort is now in a ruined state, the monsoons simply transform the landscape. The watchtower is still in one piece and gives you magnificent views of the Kodachadri Hills & the backwater channels of the Lingamakki Reservoir.

Nagara Fort In Monsoons

We spent close to an hour or hour and a half here exploring the ruins and clicking a lot of pictures. After a brief stop for lunch after Shivamogga, we played games and sang our way back to Bangalore.

Basically! Kodachadri Is Love

There are only a few things that one could ask for in life. The company of a beautiful bunch of people, a homestay with delicious home-made food, ZERO network whatsoever, and the most exciting trek in the Western Ghats that packs all kinds of trails in it. Every one of those three trips to Kodachadri has left me with so many lasting memories and people.

Now you know why Kodachadri has a special place in my heart 😉

Thanks a lot for sticking through till the end. Hope you enjoyed reading it too and if you loved the place, add it to your next weekend trip. I have been to Gokarna Trek before wilth Nature walkers. I have observed in many organisations/ startups intial enthusiasm is always there. But what makes Nature walkers different is there consistency in providing service, Not deviating from goals/ideology due to ups and downs or for the sake of profit. They are passing on there experience/knowledge and brainstorm within themselves to keep the participants happy and safe. I haven’t been able to see one instance where there is some sought of negligence even from a budding group leader. I would definitely recommend anyone can go with Nature Walker

Went to Kodachadri Trek with ODLS Amrita, Swapna and Avinash on 22 Dec. All arrangements were nice and the ODLs were very helpful. They converted a group of 21 strangers into a team and by the end of trip, everyone was having a great time. Homestay was in a jungle area where one can enjoy nature. The facilities were good as well. Watched a perfect sunset at the peak and enjoyed a rollercoaster of jeep ride. The whole trip was well organized and executed. Kudos to the team!

So it was the first unofficial of our office colleagues and we were actually planning for Kudremukh Trek but fortunately yes fortunately we didn’t it and the alternative was Kodachadri Trek. I honestly didn’t expect it to be this amazing since i thought it would be just a normal trek, however it was one of the most memorable treks i have been too. Our ODLs (Anupan, Shailesh,Shashank and Amogh) were so cool and there was so much games and the excitement level was always on a high and was never dripping down. The scenery was straight out of a fairy tale. The peak was exquisite and the sunset made it even more beautiful with all kind of colors. I would highly recommend it for everyone to try it at least once. A special thanks to Shashank for helping us so much to arrive on time to Bengaluru so that we could catch our bus back to Chennai. Thanks a lot bro.

It was my first trek and turned out to be an Unforgettable one . Nature Walkers is extremely talented group, all the ODLs(Anupan, Shailesh,Shashank and Amogh) were great..they kept motivating us all the time and took care of everything. I had a great experience in Kodachadri Trek and it was worth it. Everyone should go for it atleast once.

Rinky Gupta – October 27, 2018

We randomly choose Kodachadri trek as it was a long weekend and we wanted to do something new as we had never been to any trek before so we didn’t knew what to expect and it turned out amazing. Our ODL’s (Shashank, Shailesh, Anupam, Amogh) were the motivating factor that helped us complete 14 km trek. I had never imagined i would get a chance to meet such amazing people in a trek. The accomodation, meals and overall arrangement were decent and hassle free. We were always kept motivated and engaged in some or the other thing. To manage such large group for a trek is never a easy task. I appreciate the efforts of our ODL’s. Had a lovely experience in Kodachadri trek. Looking forward for more such experiences with Nature Walkers.

I have been a part of kodachadri trek on 20th oct 2018. It was awesome and the ODL’s (Shilesh, Shashank, Amogh and Anupam) were so friendly. People who trekked with us made this trip even more special. It was my first trekking experience and they all have made this as a wonderful memory to cherish. While trekking each and everyone helped others by giving their hands which really helped people who struggled a bit and finally everyone made their destination. And last but not the least MAFIYA game and dancing for ooooo ooooo song while returning back in bus has everyone gone crazy😂😂😂

Umang – October 24, 2018

Bored during the long dusshera weekend and tired of asking friends I decided to take on a walk with nature at Kodachadri and it turned out to be the best decision ever. The place is absolutely breathtaking and is every bit as beautiful as the pictures show and more! Words don’t suffice to express the varied beautiful landscapes and terrains experienced in one day. Nature walkers created the perfect experience which was amplified by the liveliness and zeal of the team, Shashank, Shailesh,Amogh and Anupam. They ensured everyone was safe and motivated enough to make it to the peak. They also went out of their way to make sure all the participants are comfortable throughout the trip. Participants were a great mix of cultures and we all had the best time ever! If you are new to the city or just bored of city life, I would definately recommend taking this trek. It’s surreal !

Awesome experience……. Online booking is good idea, so many times we planned for trip but cancelled due to so many reasons and also need guide for this kind of trecks. Kodachadri is nice place for nature lovers.Hidlumane water falls ,top view and sunset was awesome. Looking for leeches, enjoying the nature and clicking photos….. Zeep ride while coming back was nice experience. The overall all arrangements was good. Naterwalkers organizers shashank, anupam, shailesh and took care of whole team and encouraged a lot. Home stay was also good. Need to have such a nice experience at least once in our life…. Shivappa nayak kote(Nagar fort) which is around 25km from kodachadri is nice place.Top view from fort is also nice and good place for photo shoot. Overall we spent nice time in kodachadri treck. I personally suggest all readers to experience such a treck once in your life….

Prapti Acharya – October 24, 2018

Kodachadri trek (19th Oct-21st Oct) Since it was a long weekend, me and my friends (group of 5 girls) decided to try something adventurous, “Trekking”. Non of us had prior trekking experience and we didn’t do much research on how this is going to be, we just saw the reviews were nice and place is nice and beautiful and for us the trek was on!! The entire trip was very well organized, we found out once we had booked our tickets. We were well informed about each and everything, in short, we worried about nothing. The trip bega on Friday night, we boarded the bus, there were close to 55 people including 4 ODLs and we had an introductory session where we got to know new people. On Saturday morning we reached the homestay where they had arrangements for food and accommodation, it was nice. Then started the trek. I wouldn’t say it was easy, at least for first timers like us it’s bit difficult but the 4 ODLs Shashank, Anupam, Amogh and Sailesh guided us throughout the way, lended a helping hand and made it possible for us to complete it. There were times when we totally gave up but they motivated us to keep moving and complete trek. We covered different terrains, farmland, waterfall, mountains, forest and what not. The satisfaction we had when we reached to peaks cannot be expressed in words. A view so beautiful, the greenery, weather, great leads and nice people made this one hell of an experience. The sunset point where we ended the day was amazing!! We traveled back to the homestay in Jeep’s, the Jeep ride in the mountains was another experience all together, Thrilling!! Bonfire at the end of day in the homestay was the best! Next day we left for Nagara fort. Throughout the way in the bus we danced, sang, played games and we were always engaged in activities. We returned home with a lot of memories to cherish, made new friends, the ODLs are photographers too and clicked pictures so amazing!! I would recommend this to all and I look forward to many more treks.. 🙂

Abhipriya – October 23, 2018

It was my first trip with Nature Walkers to the Kodachadri trek, and although I have done several solo trips before, this was truly amazing! Convenient pick up point, engaging intro session on the bus, followed by an exploratory 14 km trek covering various terrains – from dense forests, lush grasslands, rocky hills to powerful yet soothing waterfalls, it had it all. The tranquil sunset view at the peak was a treat to both camera as well as our eyes and the puffy sanguine clouds were an additional delight. Beating the heat next day, we managed to do an awesome photoshoot at the Nagara fort as well. Kudos to the Outdoors leaders (Shashank, Amogh, Shailesh and Anupam), who were very encouraging, supportive, and gave enough breaks to make the entire trek very comfortable. Looking forward to take another walk in the nature with you guys! 🙂 So go with your friends or book a solo trip (you will end up making some really awesome friends), and experience an easy on the pockets, fun-filled, safe and adventurous trek!!!

Rainie Patnaik – October 22, 2018

We were a group of 5 girls who decided to go on our first trek to Kodachadri with “Nature Walkers”. I can’t tell you how glad I am that we made this decision. The Trek is a bit tough for first timers but the mesmerizing sight is worthy of it. Going by the amount that we paid for the trek, the homestay was really good. The food was average but the warm hospitality made all the difference. During the trek, you’ll climb across different types of terrain and the view will be enchanting throughout. Not to forget, our amazing encouraging leaders (Shashank, Shailesh, Amogh, and Anupam) were taking care of each and every individual throughout the trek. The cherry on top, they are all amazing photographers as well. 😉 The best part was the scary Jeep ride that we took from the peak while returning! We even had a bonfire in the night which was very comforting after such a tiring day. The next day we visited the Nagara Fort and returned back to Bangalore. My overall Experience– I simply loved the bus journey, the trek, the scenic beauty, the companions, and the Outdoor Leaders. So if you have a doubt whether to choose “Nature Walkers”, go ahead and give it a try. Trust me you’ll love it. Aaaand, thank me later 😛

Adyasha – October 21, 2018

I went for the Kodachadri trek this weekend with my friends. It was an awesome experience. We had not experienced anything like it before. It was our very first trek but thanks to all the ODLs ( Shashank, Amogh, Sailesh, Anupam) , who were with us at each and every step of the journey and helped us complete the trek successfully. It is a difficult trek, for a first timer, but at the end the view is totally worth it. Amongst the sea of clouds, the Rays of sunshine make for a spectacular view. The entire day will be filled with adventures. You can experience different types of terrain, farm fields-forest-waterfall-hill , all at once with this single trek. The ODLs are very responsible, they make sure each and everyone completes the trek. Added advantage – They are awesome photographers as well 😉

Would highly encourage everyone to go for this trek!

Viji VJ – October 15, 2018

My first trekking with Nature walkers. I’m 40+, mother of 3 kids. At first I was doubtful about my endurance. Organisers Mr. Rishi, Mr. Karthik and co-trekkers kept encouraging me to finish and even carried my bag few times. At times it was even a blur whether the mountain itself was calling, ‘come on Viji you can do it, just few more steps!’ View on the top was worth all the effort. Breathtaking. Waterfalls refreshing. Good points: Food at homestay, bonfire, inspirational ods, young energetic co trekkers, games played in bus, buttermilk at first clearing, passing fog. Watch out for leeches, pull up socks over your pants, wear dry fit outfit (it dries up before we reach top) full sleeves, carry very very light for trekking. Leave other stuff in homestay. Once you reach jeep tracks near tree top, don’t hesitate to ask for jeep ride to lunch point. It will save 2 kms climb which u can use to reach temple and summit. (Next time i definitely will). A special thanks to Mr. Saurav, operations. Looking forward to join in many more trips with nature walkers. It’s very safe for women. Weekend worth spent.

Swetha Mukka – October 8, 2018

Hello everyone, It was first trek to Kodachadri Peak on 6th Oct 2018, it was amazing experience and I really dont have words that I have completed the trek with all extensive support of “Subir Singh” (The Young Men Always), we really enjoyed the waterfall and had shower which was awesome experience in lifetime, I wouldnt get this moments even I f i spent 3lakh bugs going to Europe or..round the globe. During this journey, we exchanged our thought process about life and shared funniest moments in life which would be most memorable things in my life. And I never forget the Ghost stories and have memories which I got scared and slept after listening Gayatri Mantram..thats funniest thing happened around me. If any one would have any Ortho problem or scared feeling, I would really suggest Subir Singh as ODL(Outdorr Trek Leader) to appoint as trek leader to any location and most imp is he is very dynamic person loads with infinite energy. Many people would have issue about and Food and Homestay, for me it doesnt matter,we need to experience the Nature and I loaded with full of memories while I am returned back to home. I reached home at 4AM on Monday and made my Hubby to wake-up and shared my Adventure Trek experience, it was that amazing.Sorry Anand to disturb you but I couldn’t sleep without sharing the experience. Dilip as an ODL would young person to handle a team which is really appreciate and best of luck to you. Last but not the least, we really enjoyed Forest Safari after the trek, it was much better than Desert safari(Qatar,Dubai). Next time I would plan with my cousins with Nature walkers with Subir Singh as Trek Leader which would be one more beautiful memories. Guys,Never think you r late, lets begin and experience the Adventures Trek with Beautiful Sunsets and Hill Views with Nature Walkers with Subir Singh.

Once again cheers to Subir Singh and all the best to you!!!! :-):-) ********

Regards, Swetha Mukka

My first trek with Nature Walkers to Kodachadri on Sept 28th. It was wrongly booked for 28th Oct but Hemanth quickly adjusted it. We were a group of 50 trekkers and guided by extremely energetic ODL’s – Shailesh, Pranshu, Saurabh, Jagadish and Nikita who made sure everyone reached to the peak. This was my first trek with my 12 yr old Son and I was bit worried about his safety, but all ODL’s including other trekkers took very good care of him during entire trip. We started around 11am and reached Hidlumane waterfall around 1:30pm where everyone enjoyed in waterfall. We reached peak around 6pm for Sunset which was an experience in itself. We were above clouds and the view was divine from top. Many thanks to nature walkers team for a comfortable homestay, good food, bonfire & loads of fun throughout the trip. Highly recommended to those who are willing to take their kids on this adventure. Just go for it! Looking forward to do another trek soon!!

It was my first Trek with nature walkers to the kodachadri peak, although I’ve already done the same trek last year. I had more expectations from the nature walkers group. Right from the start, ice breaker session in the bus on the way to kodachadri till returning back to home Bangalore safely, the outdoor leaders (Shailesh, Shashank & Supratik ) took care of everything beyond perfection. As outdoor leaders, all the 3 of them lead us 28 people safe to the top, constantly motivating us. Kudos to nature walkers for a comfortable homestay and yummy food & mostly importantly the enormous fun we had throughout the trip. Looking forward to do another trek soon with Nature walkers !!

It was a treat to be a part of Nature Walkers Kodachadri Trek team member. I am sorry that I can only give 5 stars to Nature Walkers. I would have preferred 10 stars or more. It was my first trek and it was a lifetime cherishable one that I had with my friends and others who had joined me in the trip. The adventures that were found around every corner on this trekking were beyond my expectations. All thanks to our fantastic trek leaders – Shashank, Shailesh and Supratik for being very supportive and encouraging. There was great motivation from them to push all of us to reach next level and kept us engrossed in the trek. Everything was organised perfectly from the pick up to every detail. Thanks for the success to each and every team member. Overall it was a fantabulistic experience!!!

Me and my friends booked this trek and it turned out to be and amazing trip we have ever had. Right from the start, our out door leaders Shailesh, Shashank and Supratik made sure we were comfortable and safe. They motivated us throughout our 14 km trek and made sure no was left behind. Everytime someone had a hard time while trekking they made sure the whole group stopped just for the person could join them. Even the people with whom we trekked were amazing and friendly. We shared stories and food throughout the trip. Without them and the leaders I wouldn’t have completed the trek nor I would have seen the sunset. The Jeep ride back to home stay was thrilling. The home stay was decent and the food was good. The ride back to Bangalore was filled with dance to all peppy songs. Even post reaching Bangalore, the leaders made sure we reached home safely. Thank you so much for the fun trip and amazing memories.

A refreshing getaway that isn’t heavy on pockets but rejuvenating. Our guides(Shailesh, Shashank and Supratik) were full of enthusiasm and ensured that each one of us felt good throughout the 2 day trip. Special mention to Shailesh who was very energetic and friendly. The waterfall dip was fun and the fulfillment at the peak is worth the exhaustion, the jeep ride back is a different experience altogether! Would definitely recommend this for a quick weekend break! Cheers Nature Walkers. Looking forward to much more fun.. !

It was a very nice trek. We went on Sep 1st week and there is enough water at the Hindlumane water falls to play and relax ourselves. After that the trek is a bit steep but not that difficult. At the top, you literally trek in clouds which is awesome. We are lucky enough to see the sunset clearly, most of the times it will be cloudy. Kodachadri is not at all commercialised or developed enough for tourism, but thats exactly why i would recommend it. You may not find comfortable home stays and delicious food, but decent enough to go for a trek there.

After long long time, I shifted again feom bike road trip to trekking. So you need that li’ll extra boost for charish it for lifetime and nature walkers surely did turbo boosting for me. I thoroughly enjoyed the trek and it was so energetic that we couldn’t feel any tiredness throughout our journey. The main thing I was worried about mostly on guided events you are not given enough time to enjoy the moments it is more like covering the places, but all hands down to natue walker coordinators, they not only gave unlimited time to enjoy but enjoyed with us with their powerful stories and singing, dancing and music skills. Also after trek they kept checking about our health and fitness to ensure we return our corporate life smoothly. I can proudly say after this “I am a nature walker”.

P.S. : enough food and proper care was given throughout the trek so don’t worry just join nature walker family to have a experience that you can cherish for a long time.

I would recommend every one to experience this once in a lifetime but before going for this trek, some precautions must be taken especially in rainy season-must carry torchlight, raincoat and umbrella with us, if it is summer then must carry plenty water and cap to protect from sunlight. Without proper shoe trek will be very much difficult. Better to take extra pair of clothes and socks for trekking. There won’t be any network available around,so must inform this to our dear ones before leaving. As the trek involves many challenges person who has fear of heights, water or having any health issues are not advisable to go. Finally thanks a ton to Nature walkers😍 for giving me such an awesome and unforgettable memory..I don’t think there could be any better place in south india than this😃😍

The trek to kodachadri. Jus me and another friend of mine, two girls started from Chennai without any expectations but jus to escape the boring routine, little did we know that this trip is gonna be an experience fr life, yeah it did. We never felt it tough to mingle with the fellow pople we met, though we didn’t even knew the language. Coming to the trek, almost 9 hrs of walk through different terrains. Fully drenched in rain, after a point all physical stamina had no place to play, it all worked on the mental stamina. Thanks to the team who made sure everyone reached that is every 60+ people reached the top and returned back safely. Food and stay was filling, clean and hygienic. Second day to Nagara fort on the way to Bangalore, a scenic beauty reminds u many cinema songs, good view and good place to pose😂😂 Then back to Bangalore after like 10 hrs of bus journey which was one memorable experience. And we were dropped rightly and we reached the station on time for taking our train to Chennai. Well planned, well informed, executed with all perfection was all I felt. The trek guides take our COMFORT AND SAFETY MORE THAN THEIR OWN!!! HATS OFF!!!!! Thank you Saurabh Anna, Shailesh Anna and team for the friendship and all the memories we carried back home!!!!

It was our third trekking in Southern part of India. It was a thrilling experience to witness the Hildumane falls and the hills of Kodachadri. Though it was tough one because of rain, we made it to reach upto the peak because of the dedicated n helpful organisers. Sourav, Shailesh, Amog, all were very caring which is difficult to find when ur grp is big in numbers. Pranshu was the rockstar of the journey. He did not let us get bored with his extra talents. Overall, it was like “do din me sadiyan ji Lena”. Kudos to all of u!

Chirag Agile – July 9, 2018

This trek was truly an amazing experience. It was the best opportunity to get up close to nature and enjoy what it had in store for us. Going through lush forests and tall waterfalls was both relaxing as well as adventurous. Being aware and present in the moment, surrounded by nature really brings to light the harmony between nature and the soul and is amazing to experience.

Met amazing people like Trek leaders saloni, tushara and amogh who made this trip so lively and fun and were great company which contributed heavily to making the overall experience epic.

The 2 days stay in a minimal technology environment was detoxing and much required for our city lifestyle.

All this, topped off with tasty hot food just makes this one of the best experiences which makes you want to say “Yes, I’m *actually living* my life!!”

Thanks a lot naturewalkers for these unforgettable memories and eye opening experiences!!

After Kudremukh, I chose to trek kodachadri with nature walkers which was very well organized by the team. From the moment we started our journey to the moment we bid goodbyes to each other are so memorable. You feel every step is worth after seeing the beautiful Hidlumane waterfalls.Though we could not watch the sunset, the bumpy jeep ride was the perfect ending for the trek. The jamming session, mafia, dumb charades, antyakshari,Anurag’s Shayari, what else do you need for a perfect weekend getaway.Kudos to the entire team for making it happen.

Looking forward for many more treks with nature walkers.

Abhishek Paneri – May 28, 2018

It was my first organized trek and I joined solo. I was very apprehensive about the possibilities of me enjoying it when I do not know anyone in the entire group. However, these two days of trek turned out to be the days when I continuously laughed and enjoyed with people whom I never met previously in my life. I usually sleep for at least seven hours daily but the evening I returned from the trek, the entire tiredness disappeared somewhere and I spent entire night in front of the bonfire with some of the most amazing spirits in the world. This experience has inspired me to be part of such events every now and then. I would also like to appreciate the efforts put in by the group leaders Saurabh, Anand, Harshith and Mihir to make sure that all the trekkers reach on top of the peak inspite of the path being difficult for many trekkers like me in the group. It would not be fair on my part if I do not request you to experience this trek at least once in your life. And yes, situations may change at any moment in the wild. So always be prepared for unforeseen events that may occur and try to be a solution wherever you can. Lastly, it would be great to study the requirements list before joining a trek. A little bit of awareness will give you cherishable moments for the life time. Thank you Nature Walkers…

This was supposed to be my solo trip (but obviously with a new set of people) that’s what I thought while I was getting back.. Because when I got in to the bus on Friday evening I felt left out for a while but when while I was getting back I had made a bunch of new friends.. And it was possible only because of “nature walkers”.. Starting from ice breaking till bidding goodbye.. We all were thoroughly entertained and we were taken the best care.. On the whole one of the best experiences I have had..

Twinkle Moolchandani – May 23, 2018

The most memorable event o my lie would be this trek Thanks to Nature walkers and the outdoor leaders for packing this trip with utter perfection! The waterfall was one of the most beautiful experience. Reaching the peak of 1345ft after a track of steep slope gave a feeling of achievement like no other. The ice-breaking sessions planned throughout the trip not only helped in knowing each other but also creating a bond for a lifetime. Thank you guys for this wonderful heaven experience, and people reading this I recommend to just sign up for it without any second thoughts!

Awesome experience ! Although the weather was hot, we enjoyed each and every moment. This is something which you can’t miss if you really love nature and adventure. Food at home stay was homely and hygienic. Both Saloni and Kartik were outstanding during the trip. No complaints, no regrets. Guys go for it..

After our amazing experience at our first trek with nature walkers in kudremukh, we went to kodachadri. And once again I have to say it was amazing and well organized. We got to explore the pristine form of nature and it was a nice change away from the constant noisy urban life. Thanks to the amazing out door leaders Hemanth, Amrita and Pavan for constantly encouraging us throughout the trek to keep us going and giving us the best experience ever. And thanks to the amazing group of people I got to meet because of nature walkers. From the moment we got inside the mini bus till we came back home, every moment was precious. Thanks for all the games, the amazing stories we heard, and the experiences shared. I met friends like family there and would love to trek again with the same group someday.

If you are looking for a perfect weekend getaway then Nature walkers are the guys you should be going to.

Trek to Kodachadri (23-25th Dec 2016) – My first trek and will be the most memorable one. Very well organized and well informed. Loved the fact that the local village homestays amidst the most indigenous surroundings are chosen. Every promise in the itinerary/plan kept, garnished with effusive enthusiasm and energy. I would give it a 5++ 🙂 Totally worth it. Feeling Raphsodical!! Would love to be a part of more treks. Keep rocking NW 🙂

Kiran Kumar – November 7, 2017

Kodachadri is a wonderful place to visit. Everything was well planned. 13 Km or 15 KM trek started and ended on time. Both leaders were friendly and made sure everybody felt comfortable. While trekking we stopped at Hidlumale falls and had fun playing in falls, finally we reached peak by 5.p.m and it was memorable experience. 10 KM bumpy Jeep drive is also something I remember. Homestay was pretty basic with good veg food, enjoyed campfire and slept in a dormitory. In the morning, there were sounds of the peacock calling around Homestay though we couldn’t see one. I can’t forget while heading back to Bangalore most of them danced, played antakshari and enjoyed in the bus, it was like back to college. 

Trek with nature walkers was very enjoyable, affordable and really worth it.

My Advice – Not many hotels around this place hence don’t expect luxury as you’ll sleep in dormitory and share same bathroom. My advice is to get your own blanket and air pillow.

Regards, Kiran Kumar

My second trekking with Nature Walkers to Kodachadri on 12th Aug Kodachadri is a mountain peak with dense forest. We started our trek in morning 10 a.m. we enjoyed trekking beside the water falls. while trekking we can see the beauty of Hidlumale falls and we had fun playing in falls. On the way we had butter milk sold in between, and crossed paddy field. By afternoon we reached grassland and had our power packs. By 4 p.m. we reached forest dept bungalow and lunch was ready, we finished having and started trekking again towards peak. As we were passing jasmine flowers welcomed us through out the peak. Finally we reached peak by 5.p.m.. It was fully covered with clouds and luckily it was not sunny. we even saw temple over there. It was so memorable, we enjoyed our trekking. The next day we also visited Nagara fort which was fully covered in green. Once again Im thankful for Nature Walkers and Im really happy that im also nature walker now.

Kodachadri Trek: Everything you need to know about!

Why should you go for kodachadri trek.

Kodachadri-Trek-Image-Muddie-Trails

If you have checked out with your trek loving friends in Bangalore, they would have surely bragged about a place called Kodachadri. Our trekkers loved this place so much that many people who did Kodachadri trek changed their definition of their favorite trek. That begs one question – what is so special about Kodachadri trek? Here are are the top 3 reasons to book Kodachadri trek package :

  • Simply because it is one of the most beautiful treks in South India. In terms of sheer natural beauty, Kodachadri competes with another fantastic place in western ghats called Kudremukh .
  • Kodachadri is the only trek where you need not trek back. Yes you read it right. We can actually return by an off-road jeep ride. It is very unique for Kodachadri because there is a broken mud road where only 4×4 jeeps can commute.
  • Having the luxury of traveling back by jeep means: 1. Trekkers can take their sweet time to hike up the mountain. Your trek-lead will not push you too much, except for occasional pep talk. 2. Trekkers can enjoy the amazing sunset that Kodachadri is famous for (in winters and summers).

We do not have this advantage for other treks in Karnataka because everywhere else, trekkers have to return to base before night falls. This means people have to start trekking back early enough. Once it is dark, you wouldn’t want to be outside there in western ghats, for they are famous for their snakes and other wild animals.

Things to expect on the Kodachadri trek

  • How do you feel if someone tells you there is a wonderful waterfall almost halfway through the trek, where you can take a relaxing dip (become a water baby), recharge your battery, and continue trekking up? Well, this is another unique feature of Kodachadri trek via Hidlumane waterfalls. Sounds fascinating, isn’t it? It will be even more thrilling when you are actually part of the trek.
  • Bonus trip to Malpe beach adjacent to Udupi town on Day 2.
  • Only one-way trek. Jeep ride while returning (as explained in the above section).
  • Lush green forest and mountains irrespective of the season. That’s why it is so beautiful.
  • A thrilling ridge walk during the trek where you can see a huge mountain dip going deep into the valley.
  • Many people will be there at the top, even non-trekkers coming by jeeps.
  • A fantastic sunset during sunny days.

Malpe-Beach-Image-Muddie-Trails

Kodachadri is located in the heart of western ghats at a distance of 414 Km from Bangalore. It is also very close to the west coast. We take this as an advantage to visiting Malpe Beach on Day 2 which is adjacent to Udupi town on the Konkan coast. Kodachadri falls under the Shimoga district of Karnataka which is also home to another extraordinary place called the Agumbe rainforest . All the mountain areas in Karnataka are logically named as a region called Malenadu . You would have heard this name from your Kannada friends. There is a famous song (actually there are many songs) describing its unique culture, beauty, and food. Watch it on Youtube here .

Kodachadri trek experience with Muddies

After the early morning hues and freshening up at our forest homestay, we will start our journey to a small village called Sampekatte nestled in the mountains, at the base of Kodachadri hill. A set of safety instructions will be given by our trek-leader(s) during the journey. After greeting our jeep driver, who will come to the top to pick us later in the evening, we shall meet our forest guide and start the trek from the forest department check post. The trek passes through a dense forest cover with huge trees. The Locus and other insects keep making loud screechy noises as we hike up.

Kodachadri-Waterfalls-Image-Muddie-Trails

After a couple of hours of trek, you will reach super fresh Hidlumane waterfalls. It’s a ritual for trekkers to shed inhibitions and take a chilling dip in this fresh mountain water. You can expect some leeches during monsoon months, like anywhere in western ghats, but that doesn’t stop us from enjoying this beautiful setting in the dense jungle. The result of playing in the water – we are extremely hungry. We will open our Lunch packets at a cliff close to the falls and savor our food. After waterfalls, nature starts opening up as we catch up some altitude. Surprisingly, we will encounter lush green farmland in the middle of the forest accompanied by plenty of Banana plantations which probably belong to local forest/temple authorities. As we continue our trek to the peak, it’s time to witness the true glory of mother nature and relish a precious natural setting. You will get to see numerous hills, valleys, grasslands, and birds-eye views of the surrounding forest. As we near the summit, a special attraction welcomes trekkers – a ridge walk where one side is the giant mountain and the other side is a deep valley. You will get to see colorful patches of Jasmine plants at the top. Kodachadri is also called “Jasmine of Hills” because of this phenomenon. A noteworthy place called “Sarvajna Peetha” (kind of a temple) is located close to the peak where Sree Adi Shankaracharya performed meditation. Late evening, we will head to the famous sunset point of Kodachadri overlooking deep valleys. Barring monsoons, sunsets are very clear and peaceful over here. If lucky, you will get to witness a deep red Sun setting into a thick cloud bed. On an extremely clear day, people can even spot the Arabian Sea from this point. The sunset experience would also give your body a much-needed break and relaxing time for the mind.

Kodachadri-Trek-Image-Muddie-Trails

By now, a call would have gone to our jeep driver who will drive uphill to pick us. We will walk for 30 mins to the jeep point. The ride is so bumpy, it’s not recommended for very old citizens or people with back pains. The ease at which jeep drivers turn their steering and change gears on tough trails feels crazy. Nevertheless, it’s an enjoyable ride in the evening chill after a tiring trek. You will alight the jeep, board our shuttle, and move back towards homestay with the remarkable memories of the Kodachadri trek.

The all-important: Stay

Our homestay is about an hour ahead of the Kodachadri base, deep in the rainforest. The village vibes you get here are just unparalleled. We deserve not just a lovely stay, but lovely hosts also. Isn’t it? We got this covered. Along with giving a warm reception, the hosts will also serve tasty and edible Malnad style food. As always, we have different spaces for men and women. In this case, the ground floor belongs to the guys and the first floor belongs to the girls. There are common washrooms in our home which are well maintained. We also have a few tents. Based on the request, we will arrange camping by pitching tents in front of the homestay. Being true localities, the hosts have been living here for generations, so it is completely safe and secure for travelers. Since it is located close to the forest without any light pollution, having a campfire under the cold night sky with plenty of stars gives an amazing experience here. The place makes you want more of it, especially because it doesn’t pull any carrier signal except for BSNL. When you are ready to check-out of the homestay on Day 2, the place tempts you so much that you will find it hard to leave. However, we have no choice but to continue following our Kodachadri itinerary towards Malpe Beach or Nagara Fort.

Kodachadri-Trek-Stay-Image-Muddie-Trails

Kodachadri in different seasons

  • Monsoons: Being in the heart of western ghats, the months of June to September bring plenty of rains to Kodachadri. Thick clouds, intermittent rains, and leeches constantly accompany trekkers. There will be lots of water in Hidlumane waterfalls. Monsoon trek to Kodachadri is indeed famous among trekkers as it poses a different kind of experience. Our itinerary involves visiting Malpe Beach on Day 2. However, it’s not the season to play in the Sea. Hence, we usually explore Nagara Fort which turns very beautiful in these months with a green carpet of grass, visit rainforest water pools that are active in this season and then head to the beach town to chill out. This is the best time to visit Kodachadri as there are more places to explore.
  • Winter: Months from October to January attract plenty of trekkers. The rains would have reduced and landscapes would have turned slightly misty. There is a good amount of water at Hidlumane to play. The sunsets are usually pretty. The weather is mostly pleasant to climb during the day. Cold evenings and colder nights are the new normal. Malpe Beach gets colorful with lots of tourists. Watersports and Saint Mary’s Island may be opened based on Sea conditions which are added attractions. This is probably the best time for Kodachadri trek.
  • Summer: February to May offers clear views and amazing sunsets. The climate will be warm but still good enough for trekking as Kodachadri has a thick Shola forest. Hidlumane waterfall has enough water to take a refreshing dip. Great time to indulge in plenty of watersports and take a ferry ride to Saint Mary’s Island at Malpe Beach. Hot Sun and refreshing Beach are a perfect match.

Kodachadri trek -A weekend getaway from Mangaluru

Photo of Chaithra Kowshik

Kodachadri hills located in the dense forest of western ghats. Kodachadri trek is a three and half hrs journey from Mangaluru. There are two routes to reach this place. One route is to reach from Shivamogga to Kodachadri. For us nearest route is through Kollur.

A small town in Kundapur Taluk, famous for ancient Sri Mookambika Temple surrounded by its scenic beauty and amidst thick forest of Western ghats. There are lot many buses run between Mangaluru and Kollur . We group of five girls left our place at around 4.30 pm. By the time we reach it was around 7.30pm. As soon as we arrived at Kollur we checked into a hotel and rushed to Mookambika temple as it was about to close. Luckily we reached on time and had darshana of goddesses Mookambika, it was divine to see the god. After that we roamed around the temple streets and went back to our hotel. Next day we had planned to leave early morning for the Kodachadri trek.

KODACHADRI TREK

Kodachadri is accessible only by Jeep or Bikes till some point. To reach the peak you have to trek around 2km. Usually, trekekers start from the base point which takes around 9 km one side. In the Morning at mid of the main street Jeeps will be available. We wanted to visit Hidlumane falls but we did not hire the whole jeep for ourselves so we had to skip the waterfalls. We went to the last accessible point and started our trek. We had a wonderful roller-coaster ride in the jeep, till now I haven't experienced and we enjoyed it throughout our journey. Yes, on a serious note from the base point till the top it's a challenging road for two-wheel riders. Only experienced drivers could take us on that road.

Once we reached starting point we started walking towards the top. On our way small vendors who were selling buttermilk, pineapple etc. Buttermilk had heavenly taste, it was cold as if it was just taken from the cooler. One of my friend who doesn't like curd, buttermilk even she drank more than 2 glasses. pineapple, gooseberry, of course, buttermilk etc was our food throughout the Kodachadri trek. Meanwhile lots of chitchatting, laughing, competition to take solo pictures for our social profiles, in between warnings from another group of women for taking pictures at the edge ( we were aware and careful still we got warnings).

We reached the top after walking one hr and spent some time at the top. There is a small temple called Sarvajna Peeta, where it is believed that Shri Adi Shankaracharya meditated at the top. There is a saying " best view comes after hardest climbing" in our case it was not that hardest climbing still we got the best view with mountains covered with clouds, thick forest, cool breeze. Overall it was mesmerizing. After some time we were back to the starting point where our jeep was waiting for us. Then back to Kollur, checked out our hotel and with little tiredness, we headed back to Mangaluru thinking that next time we would cover waterfalls and start the kodachadri trek from the base point.

Itinerary for Kodachadri Trek

In terms of the itinerary, the place can be reached via two routes, one that includes the trails to Karekatte and the other one is where the trails reach around to Marakuttaka. The prior one has an easier trail and is best for the ones who are not pro in trekking and need an easy trail to visit and explore around.

The other one does have steep trails which are quite often tough to cover. It includes the Hidlumane falls in the process which is further quite beautiful but at the same time, dangerous as well.

The majority of the people suggest visiting Nagodi or Nittur and staying at the homestay options that are available there. This makes it quite easier for you to do the Kodachadri trek in monsoon and explore the place around. Duration: 3 days, talk to an expert, 0124-6907340.

Take Kodachadri trek to one of the highest mountains in Karnataka, and get ready to be amazed by the natural beauty of the place. This 4400-feet high peak is a part of the Western Ghats, and the trip is a good opportunity to see the natural treasures of the mountain range. The peak has a bit of history and mythology associated with it, which makes it even more attractive to tourists. It is said that a goddess killed a demon atop the hill, and that in the 11th century, Adi Shankaracharya meditated here. The goddess appeared to the sage and fulfilled his wish; hence, the trek to Kodachadri also has a spiritual aspect. Kodachadri trekking will be organised on the second of the three days, which the tour is spread across. All along the journey, your eyes will feast at lush greenery, which will comprise many plants, endemic to the region. You will cross numerous streams and waterfalls, which will make the trip exciting. From atop the hill, you will be able to see a mesmerising sunset. If the day is clear and sunny, then you may also be able to get a glimpse of the Arabian Sea! Your accommodation will be in tents or sleeping bags, near the mountain. As Kodachadri trek in Karnataka is a short one, you will easily be able to ascend the cliff, and return on the same day. This trip also includes travelling to Sharavathi Backwaters to enjoy a refreshing swim either on Day 02 or Day 03. The option of camping near the backwaters will elevate the adventure level of the expedition to another level. On the morning of Day 3, depart for Bengaluru and visit Nagara Fort on the way. Itinerary: Day 01: Pick-up from Bengaluru Reach the pick-up spot in Bengaluru at the scheduled time, and board a coach to the homestay, located near the peak. Day 02: Arrival at Homestay | Trek to Kodachadri and Back to Homestay On arrival at the homsestay, freshen up and relish a delicious breakfast. Take rest, while your lunch for the trip is being cooked and packed. Post resting, travel to the Jeep stand, from where your Kodachadri trek begins. The trail is lined with tall trees on both sides, and you walk on it for about 1.5 km. After this easy walk, turn right and enter a dense forest. The humidity increases as you make your way deeper into the woods. This can be attributed to the fact that the area is near the Arabian Sea coast. After a while, Kodachadri trekking will see an increase in altitude, which will be encountered continuously till you reach a meadow. Continue on the path for around 100 metres, and then turn left. A number of logs lie scattered on the ground, and you will be able to cross them with great ease. As you continue this Kodachadri trekking in Karnataka, you will be required to cross a small stream. Beyond the rivulet, the nature of the track will change drastically, and the trail will now be full of small and big rocks. On the way, you will see a number of waterfalls, which make for excellent photography spots. Walking further will lead you to Hidlumane Falls, one of the highlights of this excursion. It is a series of seven drops, and the highest point of the waterfall is roughly 60 feet from the ground. Post enjoying in its plunge pool and under the falling water, turn right from the fall, and restart the trek to Kodachadri. The track again takes you through the forest, and after a while, a steep ascent of almost 60 degree gradient will be encountered. Turn right after sometime, and then turn left to meet a proper road, which leads to a temple. Upon reaching a section, where the trail splits into two, take the one going straight. Just before you begin the final ascent, you will see a deep gorge below, which will make adrenaline sprint through your blood vessels. Take a break during the walking expedition to relish the lunch that you had brought along with you. Plan A: After reaching the homestay, have tea and dinner, and follow them up with getting rest inside tents. Plan B: From the homestay, travel to Sharavathi Backwaters for swimming.
