The waterfront and roanoke island ghost ship.
A detailed replica of the 1585 merchant ship, Elizabeth II was constructed to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the arrival of a group of settlers that would later be known as the Lost Colony of Roanoke. The third expedition of the Queen’s attempt to colonize America would be the most disastrous with an entire colony of settlers vanishing without a trace. Several theories on their disappearance have circulated over the years as it’s easy to be consumed by this incredible unsolved case. You might even find yourself consumed as well.
The Roanoke Island Inn
Constructed in the 1860s, the Roanoke Island Inn was built as a quaint, waterfront home for the Jones family. However, it wouldn’t take long for this dream home to become a nightmare. After losing his beloved position as Postmaster, Roscoe Jones imprisoned himself in his upstairs bedroom, too ashamed to face his family and remaining locked away until his death. As in life, Roscoe’s tortured soul remains a prisoner of the home, spooking anyone who enters his former room.
Cora Mae Basnight Bridge
There’s nothing more satisfying than seeing the tranquil waters and beautiful boats on the waterfront from the Cora Mae Basnight Bridge…until you learn about the Grey Man. While there are many stories surrounding the origins of this mysterious grey shadow figure, one thing is for certain: his presence signifies the approach of a deadly hurricane. Whether the Grey Man is the reason for the treacherous weather or he appears as a warning, if you see an unexplained grey mass in any of your photos, take shelter!
Welcome to Pirate City Ghosts
Buried under abandoned sand dunes and deep ocean currents are the forgotten ghosts of the Manteo. Join Pirate City Ghosts to learn how this beautiful beachfront became one of the most haunted beaches in America.
A Town Built on Greed, Misfortune, and Mysteries
Known for its abundance of oceanfront views and gorgeous beach homes, Manteo has been a popular vacation spot for more than a century, attracting visitors from all over the country looking for relaxation and the bliss of peace and quiet. What they really find is a vortex of forsaken spirits and eerie occurrences bred from a dark period in the town’s history.
Adventure through the most terrifying areas on the beachfront where you’ll find yourself at the same haunted locations where Outer Banks’ most notable apparitions have been spotted. This seemingly quaint and quiet beach town is home to some of the most intriguing and spine-tingling tales that include formidable ghost ships, distraught apparitions, and the incredible story of Sir Walter Raleigh and the Lost Colony of Roanoke.
They may have been lost but they will never be forgotten while their ghosts still roam the moonlit beaches each night.
What Will I See?
The lost colony of roanoke.
Though hailed as a beach lover’s dream, Manteo’s sinister origin story is anything but a seaside walk. The colonization of this tourist town is one that was so harrowing and unprecedented that its retelling has been depicted in various forms of media for decades.
Pirate City Ghosts walks you through the incredible tale of the Lost Colony of Roanoke, with detailed accounts of one of the nation’s biggest mysteries that occurred right here in Manteo. Visit the Roanoke Island Ghost Ship, a replica of the merchant ship that set out with would-be settlers only for the colony to go missing without a trace.
Following a trip to England for more supplies, John Smith returned to the island only to discover that it was uninhabited and that both the settlers and Croatoan Tribe were gone with no signs of a struggle. This dark mystery would spawn the mystique, producing a legend that continues to make its rounds in the Outer Banks to this day.
A Daring Venture With Deadly Consequences
Just over the bridge from Roanoke sits the desolate ghost town of Buffalo City, a shameful piece of land that spawned repulsive acts and ruthless outlaws. A far cry from its soft surroundings, Buffalo City was something out of the Wild West and its savage residents played the part.
Discover the Old Dare County Jail, where the jail cells imprisoned a melting pot of criminals that included bootleggers, thieves, rapists, and murderers. Undesirable individuals were known to hang around the jail, bringing contraband to their jailed friends. In fact, the lax approach to housing criminals was the inspiration for the jail in the Andy Griffith Show.
Of course, the reality was no sitcom. Brawls broke out regularly and mayhem was the general atmosphere on any given day. The evil that illuminated the jail now appears in photographs as orbs are frequently caught by visitors. Employees are also susceptible to the darkness as many have refused to go into the closet that once served as the evidence room. Nobody is immune to the actions of the spirits that remain – including you.
Why is Manteo So Haunted?
The show must go on… even in death.
The evolution of Manteo made it an ideal place to settle as well as a perfect resort town to visit. Built in 1918 by George Washington Creef, The Pioneer Theater was the top venue for live and cinematic entertainment and, through restoration efforts, continues to be a staple in the community.
But the light-hearted fun takes a balcony seat to eerie phenomena that still occur to this day. Uncover the antics of Mr. H.A. Creef who continues to enforce his stringent rules in the afterlife. More than a decade after his death, Mr. Creef continues to quiet unruly movie-goers, knocking cell phones out of their hands to quiet them as he did in life.
Mr. Creef is not alone in the ghostly antics, though. The murder of makeup artist Brenda Holland has become a Manteo local legend, and so have her bone-chilling attempts to be remembered. Hear the frightening account of her fellow castmates that gathered at the theater for a movie only to be horrified by a scene that featured Brenda’s obituary – a ghastly scene solely witnessed by the group and never to be seen again.
Sadness and Despair Flood The Seaside Town
Quaint and cozy homes line the historic streets of Manteo, each with a unique and sometimes unsettling story to tell. Pirate City Ghosts takes you to the Roanoke Island Inn where the sunny exterior hides a tragic end within its four walls.
Bear witness to the sorrowful final years of Roscoe Jones, the town’s Postmaster turned recluse following the loss of his beloved job. A melancholy Roscoe would retire to his room, remaining there until his death, his spirit remaining there to this day.
Discover chilling sightings of his apparition dressed in his postal uniform heading to work as he did in happier times. Visitors have reported unnerving experiences in the room he locked himself away in, including jewelry moving on its own, the sound of disembodied footsteps, and even a vase being thrown across the room. Keep your cameras ready, he’s known to appear at a moment’s notice.
What’s So Special About the Pirate City Ghosts Tour?
See a different, darker side of a historic and beautiful location.
There’s no shortage of ominous history in this resort town. The picturesque beach cottages and charming shops don’t seem so dreamy when you learn of the tragedies and their aftermath that blanket the town. One such tragedy you’ll hear with Pirate City Ghosts is that of Theodosia Burr.
Walk with us to uncover the mysterious and unbelievable tale of the daughter of Vice President Aaron Burr, also known as the man who killed Alexander Hamilton. Her disappearance during her excursion to New York is one that was baffling but creepy sightings of Theodosia’s spirit wandering the beach have led many to believe her misplaced soul now resides here.

Outer Banks Ghosts takes you to the sight where the white doe is often spotted and give you a first-hand look into the unfortunate events that made this legend an integral part of Manteo history, amongst many others.

6 Reasons to book your Pirate City Ghosts Tour right now!
1) you love ghost stories and then some.
If there’s one thing we love about Nags Head, it’s that the stories are not the typical stories you hear when it comes to unexplained activity. The history of Nags Head is filled with stories that belong in a grim fable but are ones that are part of the town’s development and actually play a role in its evolution as a prominent resort town.
Every location features a different tale and haunting that will keep you on the edge of your seat, a spine-tingling thriller brought to life. Here, you’ll hear tales of witches and the spells that bound their victims and love stories that end in tragedy and apparitions. You’ll uncover the reason the spirits of pirates frequent the local cottages and how the Bodie (pronounced “body”) Island Lighthouse got its name.
Whether you’re a believer or just someone who enjoys being entertained, the stories you’ll be exposed to on our tour will give you something to talk about long after your vacation ends, and may even send you home as a believer.
2) You’re interested in learning more about what makes Outer Banks unique
It’s easy to see why the area has been a popular destination spot for more than 100 years. With its abundance of amenities and activities, there’s a little something for everyone. Beyond the screensaver-esque scenery, however, are truly chilling tales of a time that most couldn’t imagine living in. And where else are you going to find vacation rental homes that were literally built with wood from the wreckage of ships?
3) You want to make the most of your vacation
Vacations seem few and far between these days. When you are able to get away, why not take in every inch of the area you’re visiting? What better way to do this than with a ghost tour that digs deep into the history of the town? And, let’s be honest: looking at pictures online doesn’t do an area justice. To truly immerse yourself in the town and culture, a visit to the historical and haunted areas that give the town its individuality is a must.
Our tour guides will only make this part of your vacation that much more entertaining. In addition to being phenomenal storytellers, our tour guides will interact with you, answer any questions you may have, and keep you enthralled from beginning to end.
4) You need a family-friendly event to add to your vacation plans
Nags Head is surrounded by beauty and filled with unique shopping and restaurants. While this is a plus for the adults, the kids can grow tired of it pretty quickly. Shopping isn’t exactly on a kid’s list of fun activities. If you’re looking for something that will keep everyone in the family happy and entertained, an Outer Banks ghost tour is the ticket to a good time for everyone.
Think it’ll be difficult keeping the kids’ attention? We’re up for the challenge! Over the years we’ve discovered that the town’s stories of ghosts, witches, and pirates are too intriguing to resist for any child. And while the stories may sound extreme, our tour guides present them in a way that’s chilling yet appropriate for the whole family.
5) You’re looking for inspiration
Finally getting around to writing that book or screenplay? Online research is great but there’s nothing quite like seeing the sites of some of the spookiest events in history, in person! Reading about these stories is one thing. But seeing the locations and hearing these tales from a person who is as passionate about the information as you are is a type of inspiration and research you won’t get from Google or a book.
Whether it’s Sci-Fi, a twisted love story or a good old-fashioned ghost story, the tales you’ll hear on our ghost tour will be sure to spark a few ideas and leave you with some inspiration to knock out that big project.
6) You secretly want to be a ghost tour guide or a ghost hunter
It’s ok to admit it, we won’t tell! In fact, we’ll cheer you on! Our tour guides are some of the best in the business and love all things about their job, from learning the history of the area to the storytelling. And, of course, they’re all big fans of ghosts and all things that go bump in the night!
If this sounds like you, you’re in good company. Take a tour with our paranormal professionals and you’ll get firsthand experience and insight into what it takes to be a tour guide. Looking to get into ghost hunting? What better place to start than with a tour that can serve as a map of your first hunt?

Did you know scientists at Princeton University may have proven the existence of ghosts?
Researchers at Princeton University have been studying paranormal phenomena in a scientific context for almost 30 years, through a department called “PEAR”. It stands for “Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research”. PEAR is a scientific study of consciousness-related physical phenomena.
Have you ever had a terrible tour guide? Someone who wasn't very likable, wasn't very knowledgeable, didn't have a good command of the group, was boring and unengaging?
Not our tour Guides! They are the best. They will make a believer out of you. Not just in ghosts, but in how awesome a properly guided tour can be. Our guides take their role seriously - they are guiding you through 300 years of history, in places that have been evidently haunted, almost weekly, since they were discovered.
Have you ever heard of a “memory palace”? It's a technique used by memory athletes to remember fantastic amounts of information with perfect recall, in a short period of time. What you do is, you associate different imagery and stories with different features of locations you're familiar with (like different rooms in your house).
If you've only got a couple days in town, maybe you're with your significant other, or maybe you're with your friends, or even your whole family, and you're spending your precious paid time off here in Williamsburg, so that every move you make counts… then you simply must come visit us.
Did you know the hormones our bodies release when we're thrilled have an influence on attraction? It's why roller-coasters make such a great first date. This has been studied over and over, but it's worth repeating here. If you're taking someone on a date, and you're looking to have a lot of fun together, or to increase attraction for each other, it's a good idea to find something that gets the blood pumping. The best activities are even a little scary, like a roller coaster. Or a haunted old church.
What is it worth to take a trip with your family that actually brings everyone together, even if it's just for an hour or two? Family vacations can be stressful, and sometimes it can be a real pain to get everyone to get into the spirit doing the same thing, without whining or eyes rolling. And how many memories do we really get to have fun reminiscing over as the years pass?
US Ghost Adventure tours are the real deal. One of the first things you'll notice, that makes us different than the other ghost tours in town, is we don't walk the traditional paths. And we don't use silly costumes or lanterns. Why? Because we only walk the paths of the stories we have fact-checked and verified. We explore real haunted sites across the U.S.
US Ghost Adventure tours are easy to fit into most schedules, because we run late in the evening. We have different start times in the evening to choose from, including with ghost tours starting at 8pm and 9pm, and the Ultimate tour at 10pm. Finally, at 90-125 minutes long, you can almost always find a tour that fits your schedule.
This is our favorite. Not long ago, a pop-science article was published that claimed the Large Hadron Collider at CERN had debunked ghosts. In reality, a scientist named Brian Cox mused that if there were a medium that could preserve a person (something like a 'soul'), he believes he would have seen evidence of it in his particle physics work.

Roscoe Jones, the former Postmaster, imprisoned himself in shame, haunting his upstairs bedroom even after death, giving chills to anyone daring to step inside.
Cora Mae Basnight Bridge
A delightful stroll over the historic Cora Mae Basnight Bridge gives a scenic view of the tranquil waters and beautiful boats on the waterfront and a possible encounter with the Grey Man. Just remember, his appearance means a hurricane's brewing, so don't get caught dead (literally) admiring the scenery.

We took the haunted ghost tours in OBX - Manteo, NC tonight. It was a great time. We met and were assigned Rowan as our guide. She did a great job giving us both history and the coast stories. The tour lasted about 90 minutes, which I think is the perfect time for a toast walk. We walked thru down town Manteo and would stop to hear the stories. It was good that we'd stop and everyone in the group could hear because we were all gathered and Rowan did well at projecting her voice. The walk was great is a sleepy, quaint town!
Bottom Line: A lovely walk around historic Manteo with some ghost stories sprinkled in. Spoiler alert. I've decided Manteo isn't that haunted. On a beautiful August evening I went on the Manteo ghost tour with some of my family members. The weather was perfect and our guide was an incredibly entertaining and engaging orator. Shout out to Lara! While the weather, our guide and the quaint town of Manteo were all terrific, ultimately, I just don't think Manteo and the Outer Banks are haunted enough to conjure up some goose bumps and raised hairs. Or, maybe we just didn't go to the spookiest of spots like the woods surrounding the Lost Colony theater or the Roanoke Island Inn. With that being said, the kids in our group, ages 6 to 16 enjoyed the ghost tour but didn't find it scary. I found Lara's story telling capabilities to be mesmerizing and inspirational.
Julia was our guide and did not disappoint! We learned about the fascinating history of the gorgeous little town called Manteo. We have been coming to OBX for years and so far, Manteo is our favorite place! Hearing the history from Julia further solidified that!

This is a history tour rather than a ghost tour. Interesting history, but not what we expected! Would recommend if you want to learn more about the OBX history and things to do in the area.
Not good 4 adults in our group. Left after 15 min (which was still way too long)... the tour ended up disbanding for weather 20 min later..... If you are a fan or casual viewer of the ghost hunting shows on the Travel Channel, you will be unfortunately disappointed. Stories (if you could call them that) were uninspired, scripted, monotoned, and "um" was every other word. We passed the Poor Richards Sandwich shop, ducked in for an adult beverage and stayed and visited with our group for the evening Our tour guide "Pen" who seems like a very nice, likable lady, ended up as a very uninspiring story teller. The presentation of the sites we visited on the walking tour was obviously off the top of her head. Best comparison would be like listening to a substitute English teacher trying to teach math from a new lesson plan to a different school district. Had the appearance of someone filling in last minute, and just filling in time. Recap: not good, avoid. .
Poor Richards
Went on a tour with BJ, she shared lots of local history and tales, not a super intense ghost tour but we still really enjoyed it, she was very well informed and you can tell she enjoys her job which adds a lot to the experience!
Nothing at all spooky about this tour. Basically just a walking tour with some history of the Outer Banks. Very dissapointed. Save your money. There are much more interesting activities on the Outer Banks. At $25 a head and as many people are on this tour they are making BANK. The tour guide asks for tips at the end. I would really hope for what they are charging for with basically no overhead that they are paying the guide well. My ghost tour actually ended up costing me $85. The glow in the dark bracelet they give you caused a nasty fungal irritation on my wrist. So after a $40 copay, $20 medicated cream and $25 tour my total investment was $85 just for me. Definitely will not be taking this tour again!! You can actually find much more interesting OBX "ghost" stories on the OBX tourism website.
Throughly enjoyed this tour! Julia was full of stories and history of Manteo and the rest of OBX. Highly recommend you book this for a fun and humorous evening!
I've been on several "ghost tours" and this was one of my favorites as Julia shared a lot of history, with a twist of urban legend into her presentation. She was engaging and earned a chuckle here and there. The kids and I enjoyed our time and it's a great way to spend an evening hearing about the past and some folk lore.
Our tour guide, Stephanie, was very knowledgeable about the historical facets. The tour was the perfect length and took us all around Manteo waterfront and downtown area. The EMF defector was going off around The Lost Colony Brewery which had my kids super excited. It's great for all ages.

The 9 Most Haunted Places on the Outer Banks
The Outer Banks is known as one of the premier vacation destinations for families in the United States. But many paranormal experts also consider the Outer Banks to be one of the most haunted places in the country. And the thin strip of barrier islands is undoubtedly a hotspot for paranormal activity.
From hurricanes and pirates to the vanishing of an entire English colony in the late-1500s, the rich history of the Outer Banks dates back many centuries. You won’t have to look far to explore paranormal hotspots on the coast of NC!
So please, discover the truth of these haunting tales for yourself!
Haunted Roanoke Island Inn
Constructed in the 1860s by Asa Jones and his wife Martha, the Roanoke Island Inn is a quaint little bed and breakfast. It overlooks the scenic Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse and surrounding marsh. Now owned by John Wilson, the great-grandson of Asa Jones, the Roanoke Island Inn has more than doubled in size from its original structure.
So what could be scary about a well-maintained inn with a great location? Well, legend has it that the ghost of Roscoe Jones haunts this Outer Banks landmark. Roscoe was a former owner of the inn and a member of the Wilson family. He was also a postmaster in the town of Manteo for many years. Until one day he received notice that he had been let go by the U.S. Postal Service.
Feeling extremely humiliated, Roscoe shut off from the outside world. He wouldn’t leave his room unless no one else was in the building at the time. Shortly after losing his job and isolating himself, Roscoe passed away.
Not long after his death, local residents spotted the ghost of a man in a postal uniform leaving and entering the front door of the building on a fairly regular basis. In addition to the ghost of Roscoe haunting the Inn, guests have reported hearing mysterious footsteps walking back in forth upstairs. Additionally, vases mysteriously smash on the floor, blinds move up and down, and radios turn on and off on their own.
Black Pelican Restaurant in Kitty Hawk, NC
You don’t have to look too far to discover why many people commonly refer to the Outer Banks as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic.” These islands have created a hazard for ships for centuries. There are several well-known shipwrecks along our coast. But this Outer Banks haunting takes place at a former Lifesaving station turned restaurant in Kitty Hawk, NC.
Lifesaving station keeper Captain James Hobbs was in charge of a crew of surfmen. They were responsible for saving the lives of mariners in danger of falling victim to the mighty Atlantic Ocean.
One young surfman by the name of T.L. Daniels was a particular thorn in Hobbs’ foot, and would repeatedly antagonize the captain day in and day out. When the captain had finally had enough of Daniels, he shot him. Captain Hobbs ended the conflict with his loaded revolver in July of 1884.
Daniels’ body was buried at sea. And without any witnesses or local law enforcement nearby, the courts cleared Captain Hobbs of any wrongdoing. Thus, he was never tried for the murder of Daniels.
One of the oldest restaurants on the Outer Banks, The Black Pelican, now occupies that same lifesaving station where Captain Hobbs shot T.L. Daniels. Locals say that the spirit of the young surfman still haunts the building.
The Ghost Cat of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse
Lighthouses have been a part of the North Carolina coast for well over a hundred years. They are unavoidable while driving down NC 12 from Corolla to Hatteras Island. The most famous of the bunch has to be Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. It is the tallest brick lighthouse in North America. And it has appeared in countless family vacation photos over the years.
Many people know that this structure was once moved inland to avoid being washed away by the Atlantic Ocean. And most people can tell you that a black and white spiral covers the sides of this lighthouse. Only a few individuals, however, know the story of the ghost cat of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse that haunts this Outer Banks landmark.
The ghost cat is a large, black and white cat that weighs anywhere from 20 to 25 pounds. Some say it’s a male cat, while others believe it’s a female. Visitors have seen this same cat in and around the lighthouse for about 150 years. After moving the lighthouse to its new location, the ghost cat came along to continue its haunting.
People claim that the ghost cat will rub up against your legs and let you touch it. However, if you try to pick the feline up, the cat will vanish.
Teach’s Hole on Ocracoke Island
Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, is undoubtedly one of the most notoriously ruthless pirates of all time. He haunted the Atlantic and the Outer Banks long before his death. And it just so happens that Blackbeard was particularly fond of a certain cove on Ocracoke Island. Ocracoke is an isolated isle south of Hatteras that’s only accessible by ferry. This cove is known as Teach’s Hole and is the alleged site of Blackbeard’s execution at sea.
Once the pirate’s reign of terror finally ended, Blackbeard met his end the same way most pirates around that time did – with a beheading. His executioners hung the merciless pirate’s head from a ship’s bowsprit and tossed his body overboard. Witnesses of the execution state that his head continued to scream after the beheading. And many claim that his headless body swam around the boar before finally dying.
Blackbeard has haunted the Outer Banks ever since. After the execution in 1718, many tourists and locals have reported seeing the headless body swimming around Teach’s Hole. There have also been reports of a headless Blackbeard wandering the beaches of Ocracoke Island, searching for his lost head while holding a lantern.
Legend of the White Doe
What could be more puzzling and mysterious than the disappearance of an entire colony? In 1587, over 100 men, women, and children journeyed from England to Roanoke Island to establish the first English settlement in the New World.
That same year, Virginia Dare was born and she became the first English-born child in the Americas. Virginia was the daughter of Ananias Dare and Eleanor Dare and the granddaughter of Governor John White. Nine days after her birth, White set sail for England in an attempt to obtain assistance for the colonists. He returned three years later on August 18, 1590, Virginia’s third birthday, and found the colony abandoned.
What happened to this English settlement that mysteriously vanished ? No one knows for sure to this day!
Many believe that Virginia Dare left the colony to live amongst the area natives. Then a Native American witch doctor with whom she had a quarrel put her under a spell. The spell made Virginia Dare transform into a white doe when she passed away. Many say that her ghost has haunted Roanoke Island and the Outer Banks since. Locals and area visitors state that they’ve seen the white doe wandering the island from time to time.
The North Room of Currituck Beach Lighthouse
A number of unfortunate events related to the Currituck Beach Lighthouse have lead to speculation about the landmark. Specifically, the North Room of the keeper’s quarters and the grounds are suspected to be haunted.
The chain of events began when an awful tragedy struck the young Sadie Johnson’s family. They were the first family to live in the lighthouse keeper’s quarters. Sadie would wander down to the ocean almost every day and play for hours before later returning to the house. This routine came to a halt when Sadie didn’t come home one day. The next day, searchers found her body washed up onshore. At the time, many considered Sadie’s death to be an unfortunate and tragic accident. However, the keeper’s quarters weren’t thought to be haunted up until the next heartbreaking occurrence at this Outer Banks lighthouse.
During a short trip, a friend of the keeper’s wife came to stay with the couple in the North Room. This was the same room Sadie Johnson used to sleep in every night. Mysteriously the house guest became infected with an unknown illness and passed away soon after.
Tragedy also brought the final family that inhabited the keeper’s quarter to their knees. The lighthouse keeper’s wife contracted tuberculosis and quarantined in, you guessed it, the North Room. Soon after isolating from family and friends, the woman lost her battle to tuberculosis.
Are these incidents coincidence… Or is something supernatural to blame? No one knows. However, since the last tenants moved out, not one person has spent an entire night in the North Room at the keeper’s house.
The Ghost Ship of the Outer Banks
There is no shortage of maritime legends that relate to Cape Hatteras. Perhaps the most peculiar story relates to the mysterious past of the massive Carroll A. Deering schooner . Lost in 1921 and later discovered completely abandoned by the Coast Guard, this enigmatic event has all of the makings of a Hollywood ghost story.
Want to learn more about this puzzling Outer Banks mystery? The National Park Service has a terrific write-up of the story that you can read on their website .
Flaming Ship of Ocracoke
Legend has it that each September, on the first night of the new moon, a flaming ship sails past the coast of Ocracoke Island. The ship looks similar to the vessel used to bring refugees from Rhine Valley in Germany to America in the early 1700s.
Those looking to start a new life in America used this as a fairly safe and trusted route up until one day. While anchored off the coast of NC, the crew of the ship attacked. Then they robbed all of the immigrates of their precious valuables.
After severely injuring and robbing the refugees, the crew proceeded to set the ship afire. Then they sent the vessel adrift into the unforgiving Atlantic Ocean while the refugees were still aboard.
Legend says that each year during the first new moon of September, the flaming ship of Ocracoke Island can be spotted sailing swiftly toward the northeast. The ship and its unfortunate passengers have haunted this Outer Banks island ever since. Always accompanied by an eerie wailing sound from the refugees who perished during the crew’s horrific act of violence and greed.

Pioneer Movie Theater in Manteo, NC
Built in 1918, there’s no question that Pioneer Theater is a landmark structure on Roanoke Island. Owned and operated by the same family after all of these years, the theatre broadcasts movies once a night each week, 12 months out of the year.
Some Roanoke Island locals believe that former family members haunt the old movie theatre. Those who owned the business and continue to watch over the place, demanding people be respectful of one another. Cell phone use is strictly prohibited inside the theatre. Locals say that a ghost will knock your phone out of your hand if you try to use it during a screening.
Regardless of whether or not you believe in the Pioneer Theater’s haunting, you’d be hard-pressed to find a movie theatre with more character and charm in eastern North Carolina. Plus tickets are at least a few dollars cheaper than what you’d pay at most every other movie theatre in the area.
Learn firsthand about these and more haunted stories on an Outer Banks Ghost Tour . Your ghoulish guide will lead you on a walking tour around downtown Manteo by lantern. Hear their ghost stories that make the Outer Banks one of the most haunted beaches in America!

Outer Banks Season 4 Fact-Check: Are Blackbeard's Amulet & Blue Crown Real?
Outer banks season 4 just introduced a kook even more brutal than topper, who hollis robinson is in outer banks season 4 & why she wants rafe cameron on the goat island deal.
The following contains spoilers for Outer Banks Season 4 Part 1, now streaming on Netflix Outer Banks has introduced plenty of important artifacts that have ties to real-life history. The show follows the story of a group of working-class teens on the Outer Banks' Kildare Island in North Carolina as they unwittingly find themselves hunting for treasure. The artifacts they find are tied to history and could be the key to a massive fortune. They also attract a constant stream of fellow (and sometimes dangerous) treasure hunters. Much of Outer Banks is based on the real local history of the Outer Banks, including season 4's hunt for Blackbeard's treasure .
A number of other artifacts have been added to the show to increase its tension and stakes, including season 4's focus on Blackbeard's Blue Crown. The artifacts discovered by Outer Banks ' characters range from gold and precious jewels to windows into the past through to the characters' ancestors. This gives the hunt for them more personal ties in Outer Banks , as many of the artifacts lead the show's teens to discover not only more about their local history, but more about their personal lineage as well . Here are all the important historical artifacts that have played into Outer Banks ' story line.
8 The Royal Merchant
The season 1 quest that started it all.
Outer Banks ' artifacts are crucial to the series and have plenty of real world connections. Season 1 kicks off with the crew still mourning the disappearance of John B. Routledge's (Chase Stokes) father, Big John (Charles Halford). Big John was a historian, whose life's work was finding the gold in the fictionalized Outer Banks shipwrecked Royal Merchant . To finish what his father started (and dodge Child Protective Services) John B. convinces his friends from the working-class Pogue gang to join his mission. The show's Royal Merchant is based on the real-life Merchant Royal , one of history's most infamous ship wrecks.
The Merchant Royal is one of the most valuable ships lost at sea in the history of maritime trade.
The Merchant Royal was a British vessel believed to carry $1.5 billion in gold and silver when it sank in 1641. The ship remains lost to this day , but an anchor that archaeologists believe belonged to the ship washed up on the Cornish coast of England in 2019 (via Bustle ). In the quest for the Merchant, the crew quickly discovers that this journey is incredibly dangerous. Racing against time and rivals, the group is eventually able to locate the $400 million dollars in gold but loses it to Sarah's greedy father (then believed to be Big John's killer), Ward Cameron.
7 Denmark Tanny's Diary
Pope heyward is a direct descendant of denmark tanny.
One of the artifacts found by Pope Heyward is a diary that belonged to his ancestor, Denmark Tanny. Tanny was a cook aboard the Royal Merchant. Denmark Tanny is based on a real historical figure named Denmark Vesey. He was a formerly enslaved man turned abolitionist activist after he won a $1,500 lottery in 1799. Vesey went on to become a respected leader of his local African Methodist Episcopal Church, where he used his influence to plot a slave revolt that would attempt to free thousands. However, his plot was leaked and Vesey was arrested, leading to his execution.
The Pogues are on the hunt for Edward "Blackbeard" Teach's lost amulet and the Blue Crown in Outer Banks season 4, but are these real-life artifacts?
In Outer Banks , Denmark Tanny is a direct ancestor of Pope Heyward (Jonathan Daviss) and was a passenger onboard the Royal Merchant. After tracking down his diary, Pope is able to learn more about his lineage and ultimately helps the group track down the Royal Merchant. The Diary also contains cryptic clues to season 2 of Outer Banks' treasure, the Cross of Santo Domingo. Because of these clues, the diary is one of the most sought-after artifacts in the show . It's especially sought out by Carlos Singh, who seeks to use it as a map to uncover the invaluable Cross.
6 The Cross Of Santo Domingo
The cross belonged to pope's ancestor.
The Cross of Santo Domingo is an important artifact in Outer Banks , and one with an unlikely television connection. After Ward steals the Royal Merchant gold and murders Sheriff Peterkin, he frames John B. for the murder. The crew returns to Kildare Island to clear his name, at which point Pope discovers that there is more treasure out there than any of them anticipated. This includes a family artifact called the Cross of Santo Domingo that was hidden somewhere on the island, and it's theirs for the taking.
This gives Outer Banks an underlying connection to a universal ancestor of action-adventure television.
While the large artifact is fictional, it does have a connection to the past. This Outer Banks plot is based on a Lone Ranger episode from decades earlier. This gives Outer Banks an underlying connection to a universal ancestor of action-adventure television. Outer Banks also amplifies the value of the cross, making it far more desirable. Although the crew tracks down the cross at a local chapel, it is ultimately stolen and melted down into gold bars by Rafe Cameron (Drew Starkey).
5 The Healing Shroud
This artifact is also sought after in season 2.
One artifact in Outer Banks is notably suggested to have restorative properties, giving it special importance to certain characters on the show. The healing shroud was thought to be hidden within the Cross of Santo Domingo , adding to that artifact's value. Some believed this shroud was capable of healing any ailment, including Carla Limbrey. A wealthy woman with a terminal illness, Carla was the one who sent her half-brother Renfield to search for it. This sets off his entanglement with the Pogues' mission. Limbrey also knew Big John, as she had initially sought his help in finding the shroud.
Limbrey was a direct descendant of Captain Limbrey, who was the captain aboard the Royal Merchant. The real Merchant Royal that sailed the seas in 1640 was indeed captained by a John Limbrey. Limbrey was even among the survivors of the shipwreck, alongside 40 other crew members who were rescued and taken aboard the Dover Merchant . The show gives this connection and the artifact a more mythical origin. Given its supernatural nature and lack of clear monetary value, the only person truly after the shroud was Limbrey.
4 El Dorado
This season 3 artifact brought the group to south america.
El Dorado, or, The City of Gold, is a treasure trove in the Orinoco Basin, Venezuela . It was first described by a Spanish soldier 450 years before the events of Outer Banks , and has been a common source of mystery and intrigue for centuries. The first clue the group discovers connected to this mysterious city of gold is the Cross of Santo Domingo, which they are eventually able to track down. After losing the Cross to Rafe, the group becomes stranded on a remote island before making the move to Barbados.
The crew are eventually reunited with Big John, sparking the quest for El Dorado. El Dorado contains billions worth of gold, jewels, and historical artifacts, attracting many interested parties. Among them is Caribbean Don Carlos Singh, who hopes to finish the quest for the gold that his enslaved ancestors started. Finding the city was the true end goal of Big John's life's work of historical study and treasure hunting , and the group decided to go along with his mission at John B.'s request, as well as to avenge Pope's family after losing the cross.
3 Blackbeard's Ship Wreck
Blackbeard died near ocracoke island.
Both of Outer Banks season 4's central artifacts (The Blue Crown and the amulet) are found within the notorious pirate Blackbeard's shipwreck. Blackbeard was an English pirate named Edward Teach who died near Ocracoke Island in the Outer Banks in 1718, both in the universe of the show and in real life history (via NCPedia ). Edward Teach is a widely documented historical figure in the Carolinas. Blackbeard's final ship was named Queen Anne's Revenge and was wrecked in the Atlantic at Beufort Inlet, North Carolina.
Teach was one of the most notorious British pirates in history. Piracy was widely pardoned under Queen Elizabeth II's reign, and at the time of Teach's death, George I encouraged pirates to surrender to the authorities in exhange for pardons across the West Indies (the present-day Americas and the Caribbean). In the show, the shipwreck is located near a local Coast Guard base, which is why JJ Maybank and Kiara Carrera dive into the wreck at night to avoid being caught .
2 Blackbeard's Amulet
The amulet belonged to the pirate's wife elizabeth teach.
Season four of Outer Banks introduces Wes Genrette (David Jensen) as an older man who entrusts the Pogues with hunting down the amulet of the famous real pirate Blackbeard's wife, Elizabeth Teach. He offers them $50,000 in exchange for the amulet. The amulet is believed to be cursed, as Elizabeth was buried without it against her wishes . As a result, the women of the Genrette family reported being haunted by her ghost shortly before their tragic deaths. This includes Wes' daughter and eventually even Wes himself after he sees the spirit firsthand.
Wes dies before the group can bring him the amulet they retrieved. The amulet and the hauntings are fictional for dramatic effect, and it is unknown if the real Blackbeard ever married , making this concept fictional but tied to a real figure. The Genrette family was only interested in the amulet, but the Pogues are now involved due to financial issues they've found themselves in. At the same time, a villainous man named Lightner and a mysterious group are also after the full sum of Blackbeard's treasure .
1 The Blue Crown
The blue crown is a part of blackbeard's treasure.
The Blue Crown is the most valuable of Blackbeard's treasures in Outer Banks , and the amulet contains a clue to finding it. This gives the amulet a greater importance in the overall narrative. The group were never interested in the Blue Crown until John B. realizes that his father once researched it. After having lost the amulet and Wes Genrette, they could use the Blue Crown to eke out an unexpected victory. Because the amulet is connected to the Blue Crown, Lightner and his crew are also after it.
Blackbeard died November 22, 1718 in Ocracoke, North Carolina.
The Blue Crown is another fictional artifact that belonged to Blackbeard. Also known as Edward Teach, Blackbeard was a real pirate who died in his final battle near Ocracoke Island in the Outer Banks (via TIME ). This explains why he has such an important overarching connection to the story at the heart of Outer Banks . This season of Outer Banks sees the group largely back on home turf as they untangle local and personal mysteries, and the Blue Crown is the final prize for their troubles.

“Outer Banks” Season 4 Part 1 Ending Explained: Who Is JJ’s Real Dad and What's Next for the Pogues?
Netflix’s ‘Outer Banks’ season 4 part 1 revealed that JJ might actually come from a family of Kooks
Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix
Warning: Outer Banks spoilers ahead!
Outer Banks season 4 ensured the Pogues wouldn’t stay out of trouble for long.
The latest installment of Outer Banks released its first five episodes on Oct. 10, quickly climbing to the No. 1 spot on Netflix. The storyline picked up 18 months after the events of the season 3 finale , which ended with the Pogues — John B ( Chase Stokes ), JJ ( Rudy Pankow ), Kiara ( Madison Bailey ), Pope ( Jonathan Daviss ), Sarah ( Madelyn Cline ) and Cleo (Carlacia Grant) — finding the gold in El Dorado.
Afterward, the Pogues intended to put treasure hunting behind them, using their newfound wealth to build a business and start a “normal life.” However, it was only a matter of time until they embarked on another mission — this time, in search of Blackbeard’s valuables in exchange for $50,000.

Unsurprisingly, the journey didn't come without its obstacles. The teens had to navigate underwater and underground territories while trying to keep their business afloat. With multiple cliffhangers and treasures still to be uncovered, many questions remain for the second half of the season, which will be released on Nov. 7.
Here’s everything to know about the Outer Banks season 4 part 1 ending, from JJ’s shocking identity twist to the sneaky connection between Chandler Groff and Hollis.
How did Outer Banks season 4 part 1 end?
In the final episode of season 4 part 1, John B, Pope, Sarah and Cleo headed to Charleston, S.C., to find Blackbeard’s Blue Crown. Meanwhile, JJ and Kiara stayed behind on Kildare Island, where Kiara got a cryptic visit from Rafe at the Pogue’s new shop, and JJ received a posthumous letter from Wes Genrette.
As it turns out, shortly before his death, Genrette left a letter addressed to “Master JJ Maybank” in case something happened, urging JJ to ask his father, Luke, about Albatross.
JJ's storyline features a complicated relationship with his father, boiling down to a history of emotional, physical and substance abuse. Despite that, JJ helped him flee the island in season 2. But in the final episode of season 4 part 1, JJ tracked him down and learned that he has actually been residing just around the corner all this time.
After pressing his father for information surrounding Genrette’s request, JJ learns that “Albatross” was the name of the boat Wes’s daughter, Larissa Genrette, died on years ago — and that Luke is not his biological father.
Who is JJ’s dad?

In a shocking twist, JJ learns that his biological father is Chandler Groff, and his mother is Larissa, who was believed to have drowned with her infant years ago on a boat called The Albatross.
Larissa came from a family of Kooks, meaning that JJ — who “never really had a home,” as Kiara has reminded the crew — came from the other side of OBX.
“What would be the worst thing that could happen to JJ is that he finds out he's actually a Kook because he's the Pogueist Pogue, and that would just put him in the frying pan,” showrunner and executive producer Jonas Pate told Entertainment Weekly in October 2024.
While not much is known about how he ended up growing up as a Pogue under Luke’s care, it’s assumed that Genrette knew that JJ was his grandson, given that he wrote him a personal letter referencing Albatross.
Was Blackbeard’s treasure found?
When Genrette approached the Pogues about the new hunt, he explained that he was trying to break a familial curse that was dependent on finding a certain keepsake: an amulet.
That wouldn’t be easy, as the amulet was located 80 feet deep into the ocean on Blackbeard’s last ship. JJ and Kiara succeed, but following an underwater face-off with a man later revealed to be Lightner, they discover they aren't the only ones looking for the item.
When Lightner realized the teenagers had the prized necklace, he kidnapped Cleo and forced her to reveal its location. Pope rushed to her rescue, but despite his efforts, they lost the amulet to Lightner, who also killed Terrance, Cleo’s former colleague, during the confrontation. Still, the hunt wasn't over, as Pope discovered that the rest of the treasure was somewhere in Charleston.
Shortly after, Lightner and Dalia used the amulet to enter a box in the crypt, leading them to discover a script that likely leads to the Blue Crown that the Pogues are hunting for.
At the end of Outer Banks season 4 part 1, the Pogues didn't have their hands on the amulet or the Blue Crown — but they’ve never been known to give up easily.
What happened to Pope and Sarah?
Once the group arrived in Charleston, Pope and Sarah went down to the crypt of an old church while Cleo and John B supervised the surrounding areas. Lightner and Dalia weren't far behind them, though, and the Pogues had to hide underground in order to avoid another face-off.
While Pope and Sarah desperately sought an escape, a violent storm hit and flooded the catacombs. To make matters worse, they noticed barnacles high up on the ceiling, indicating the area would soon be completely underwater. They remained trapped in the catacomb at the end of season 4 part 1, still hoping to find a way out.
"The adventure they go on is probably my favorite,” Pate told EW in October 2024 when asked about Pope and Sarah’s fates.
“They do some globetrotting that takes them further afield than they've ever been, where they're really, really out of their comfort zone, and it just makes for a really dramatic, explosive story in the second half,” Pate added. “We'll have the biggest [action scenes] we've ever had. The scope of it is enormous.”
How are Chandler Groff and Hollis connected?
Throughout the beginning of season 4, Hollis, a prestigious real estate developer originally from the Cut, was trying to recruit Rafe Cameron ( Drew Starkey) into a shady deal regarding the allegedly haunted Goat Island.
Rafe hesitated to take Hollis up on her offer, unsure if it was a scam. That was, until Hollis offered Rafe’s girlfriend, Sofia, $25,000 to convince him to join the deal. Sofia succeeded, but by the time she started to regret it, it was too late — Rafe was already “all in” with Hollis and had completed the large wire transfer.
After the transaction was completed, he was under the impression that he would learn more about the project through a meeting, where he would be introduced to key players, but the meeting didn't take place as expected.
Instead, it’s revealed that one of those key players is actually Chandler Groff — who JJ has just learned is his biological father. In the final moments of Outer Banks season 4 part 1, Chandler and Hollis are side by side for the first time all season, with Hollis telling him, “It’s going to be glorious.”
Viewers are still in the dark about what exactly she is referring to, and Rafe still doesn’t know about the bribe, so there are a lot of secrets to potentially be unraveled in the second half of the season.
Did the Pogues lose their new business?
At the beginning of season 4, the Pogues return to Kildare Island with 20 lbs. of gold they found in El Dorado, which they exchanged for $1.1 million (after spending some of the money on JJ’s restitution fees).
They used their new wealth to build a bait, tackle and charter tour shop (that would double as a home) on JJ’s old property land that they bought back, naming it “Poguelandia 2.0.”
The business was steady for a while until JJ gambled their last gold nugget in a race against Topper and Rafe, which was supposed to pay their property taxes. Losing the race put them back in debt, leaving them to rely on the $50,000 they would receive in exchange for finding the amulet.
That’s not the only obstacle the now-business owners face. Sarah and Cleo discover that the government is changing zoning laws, which affects the Pogues’ land and could force them out of their home and business.
It remains unknown how they will manage to save their business from the rezoning, but this will likely be a key plot point for the remainder of season 4.
What have the Outer Banks cast and crew said about season 4 part 2?
Jeff Hahne/Getty
While there are questions from the first half to be answered, Pate also teased new challenges and storylines to come in Outer Banks season 4 part 2.
“We're not telling falling in love stories anymore or love triangle stories because all the characters are happily with their significant other, so we have to find new obstacles to throw at them, and that's what, really, we were trying to explore,” he told EW in October 2024.
According to showrunner Shannon Burke, the upcoming episodes might exceed expectations. “The second half of the season is the best half of a season we've ever done,” she revealed to the outlet, before explaining that season 4 is like a “double album.”
“The first half is Pogue-y fun, and then the second half is more stakes, more emotion, more adventure than we've ever had,” she added.
In an October 2024 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live , Cline echoed that excitement for the second half of the season. “If you think part one is good, just wait until part two,” she said.
