Atletico Madrid, Sevilla headline LaLiga North American summer tour

atletico madrid summer tour 2023

LaLiga North America, the joint venture involving Spain's LaLiga and promoters Relevent Sports, announced that its summer tour will involve Atletico Madrid , Real Betis , Real Sociedad and Sevilla .

The tour will be comprised of four exhibition matches with Atletico Madrid taking on Real Sociedad on Aug. 2 in Monterrey, Mexico, while city rivals Betis and Sevilla will play in Guadalajara on the same day. The latter match could feature Mexico internationals Andres Guardado with Real Betis and Sevilla's "Tecatito" Corona.

The tour will conclude three days later with a doubleheader at San Francisco's Oracle Park, with Atleti taking on Sevilla while Real Sociedad will play Real Betis.

- Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (U.S.)

The tour is the latest attempt to increase La Liga's visibility in North America, even as Relevent Sports is engaged in litigation against the U.S. Soccer Federation and FIFA in a bid to hold official league matches from LaLiga in the United States.

While North America is a region where interest in the English Premier League runs high, La Liga North America president Boris Gartner noted that the large number of Spanish speakers across the continent allows for building deeper connections with fans in the region.

"North America is a key market," Gartner told ESPN. "The Premier League has been a lot more intentional in their international expansion over the past decade. But if you really look at the demographic in general, this country is probably getting more diverse and multicultural by the day.

"[La Liga] has a cultural connection that no other property really has. The players from the national teams in their home countries, most of them either play in LaLiga or have passed through LaLiga. So there is that emotional connection as well. So we feel that we have a lot to do, but that this territory specifically, and North America in general, is a huge growth market where we have really great cultural connection, language connection with, with the growing demographic in the country."

LaLiga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid will not be part of the tour. The two clubs currently have a tense relationship with LaLiga over their continued support of the proposed European Super League, as well as they fact that during the 2021-22 season two clubs earned more than a fifth of LaLiga's television revenue.

Nonetheless, Gartner is keen to broaden the league's appeal. Atletico Madrid has challenged the duopoly between Barcelona and Real Madrid in recent years, winning La Liga as recently as 2020-21.

"Not being naïve, the audience and the power that those two brands command is something that we have to play to our advantage," Gartner said. "But we've constantly been trying to tell stories around the rest of the teams that participate in the league just because we are at the end of the day promoting the competition."

European clubs have drawn criticism in the past for touring the U.S. without their best players. Gartner said while there are no absolutes, the fact that this summer won't include a men's World Cup or European Championship will help ensure that the four LaLiga clubs will bring their top performers.

"This is a very clean summer as we're calling it," Gartner said in reference to the international men's calendar. "And we are not only expecting that the teams will show up with the stars, but they've seen this as an opportunity for promotion like no other.

"So it's going to be in our best interest to show up with the stars as well."

Sevilla have struggled domestically this season but are still involved in the quarter finals of the Europa League where they face Manchester United. The other three sides are looking good to qualify for European competitions next season with Diego Simeone’s Atleti looking to secure second place as they now trail Real Madrid by just two points. Real Sociedad are currently in fourth place in the table with Betis holding sixth spot.

The Guadalajara meeting between Sevilla and Betis will be the first time that one of LaLiga’s highest profile derby games ( El Gran Derbi ) will be played outside Spain.

Atlético full of bark, but not as much bite, as preseason draws to a close

Diego Simeone’s attack has many creative options — but it lacks a killer at its tip.

Atletico de Madrid v Real Sociedad - Preseason Friendly

Atlético Madrid ’s preseason ended Saturday night at Oracle Park in San Francisco , where Los Rojiblancos drew with Sevilla to wrap up the LaLiga EA Sports Summer Tour . Head coach Diego Simeone was very pleased with the performance from his tired team, and — having watched the entirety of the game from the press box — I understand where he’s coming from.

Atlético played its first two friendlies this preseason in South Korea , then made the long trek to Mexico for the Real Sociedad friendly before finally winding up in San Francisco. That is a lot of travel in less than two weeks. And Saturday night’s game on the San Francisco Bay showcased many of this Atleti side’s strengths.

The 1-1 draw — in which Simeone ’s men initially fell behind due to a defensive mistake — also put Atleti’s weaknesses on display, and it remains to be seen how (or if) El Cholo repairs them.

Let’s start with the strengths. This version of Atlético de Madrid has a lot of dynamic and creative players that Simeone will not be able to field all at the same time — and that is a good problem to have.

Antoine Griezmann . Rodrigo de Paul . Memphis Depay . Ángel Correa . Yannick Carrasco (assuming he stays). Thomas Lemar (assuming he’s healthy). Koke tying everything together as he’s done for so many years. Pablo Barrios and probable preseason MVP Rodrigo Riquelme have shown flashes — as has Samuel Lino . This iteration of Atlético could be pretty fun to watch, in multiple configurations, as the season gets underway.

“The team created a lot of chances,” Simeone told the media Saturday night. “They are looking to attack and do damage.”

(By the way, João Félix concluded his preseason by playing exactly zero minutes, and he is now reportedly entertaining a move to Saudi Arabia . Can’t believe this is my life, and so on.)

Atlético piled up 20 shots against Sevilla, with many of the team’s best chances coming on the counterattack (much to opposing coach José Luis Mendilibar ’s chagrin). But only six of those 20 shot attempts found the target, and goalkeeper Marko Dmitrović made several spectacular stops in the first half. It took Correa ’s reflexes to earn Atleti a late draw, as he snapped up a deflected pass that bounced off César Azpilicueta and rifled it underneath Yassine Bounou .

During the season, Simeone is often a happy camper when Atlético generate a high number of high-quality chances. His happiness Saturday was probably enhanced by the fact that his worn-out team created great chances on a baseball field masquerading as a football pitch. But the fact remains that while Atleti found the net 70 times in LaLiga last year , only one player — Griezmann — tallied 15 goals. Los Rojiblancos did not have a “killer” 9 last season, and it does not yet look like they have one for this season.

Take Memphis , the potential difference-maker in Atlético’s attack. The Dutchman’s smooth ball-striking and promising metrics from last season make him as likely a candidate as any to be Atleti’s first 20-goal scorer since Luis Suárez in 2021. He scored an outrageous goal against Manchester City in Seoul , and he should have opened the scoring in Saturday’s friendly — but Dmitrović stonewalled him from point-blank range in the opening five minutes. In the previous friendly, against Real Sociedad in Monterrey , Memphis missed a penalty when an attempted panenka went awry (always an embarrassing moment).

Álvaro Morata toiled through a goalless preseason, as transfer rumors appeared to distract the Spain striker. Morata brings to the table several valuable auxiliary qualities that many overlook ( Simeone doesn't ) — but unfortunately, consistent finishing has never been his most valuable trait.

Correa has become a more composed, if not reliable, forward since Simeone finally moved him off the wing three years ago. Statistically, he has been good for one goal per every two shots on target since the start of 2021/22. But the World Cup winner isn’t assured consistent starts and, as someone who thrives off combinations in tight spaces rather than holding up play, is the kind of attacker Atlético already have a few times over.

Another feature to Atlético’s play this preseason was the expansion of a playing style that first took hold during the second half of last season. Initially, we called it “Cholismo 2.0,” but fans on social media have come up with an even-better term for it — “ Cholo-Taka .”

Simeone has spoken about the importance of pressing higher up the pitch more regularly, a more-modern concept he has implemented with varying success since Atleti won the league three years ago. But he’s most notably placing an emphasis on playing out from the back, hoping to continue along the path laid down after the World Cup — during which Atlético were playing arguably the best football in Spain .

Center-backs like Mario Hermoso (lack of focus) and Axel Witsel (lack of athleticism) may not defend their position particularly well, but El Cholo recognizes their ability as passers who can steadily progress the play from one phase to the next — in Hermoso ’s case, he can do it with one long ball. Players like Koke, de Paul , or the 5 that Atlético would like to add ( Pierre-Emile Højbjerg ) can also drop deeper and advance the ball in this system.

Azpilicueta and Çağlar Söyüncü have arrived this summer and received plenty of action during the preseason. Söyüncü has the look of a nasty, aggressive center-back who will help Atlético in the air, while Simeone on Saturday explained how Azpilicueta is already so important to Los Colchoneros .

“We need him. He competes, he’ll always give his best. It can be seen in his drive and his desire to help,” Simeone said. “This time, he helped in the second half, either as a right-sided center-back or as a wing-back.”

There also remain “old-school Cholismo ” defenders in this squad — José Giménez , Stefan Savić , and Reinildo Mandava — but all three present different concerns. Giménez confirmed this week that he will miss at least the next six weeks of action with a leg injury, Reinildo is still recovering from an ACL tear suffered six months ago, and Savić is as likely to be brilliant as he is to make a back-breaking mistake.

The bad pitch at Oracle Park on Saturday bedeviled Savić, who got outmuscled by Rafa Mir trying to bring down a long ball and fell to the ground, allowing Mir to glide past him to open the scoring. Mistakes like these are magnified when, on the other end, Atlético need 18 shots to score one goal.

Getting a settled first-choice defense — and remember, Nahuel Molina didn’t play a single minute in preseason due to a foot injury — is essential for Atleti to capitalize on the end of last season and challenge for the title this year. As exciting as the Colchoneros’ combination play is expected to be, it will be the strength of their defense moving the needle in one direction or the other.

“We’ve played against teams with different characteristics,” Azpilicueta said Saturday in the mixed zone. “We’ve had important tests against a well-rounded team, against the winner of the Champions League , against a team that was fourth in LaLiga, and against the Europa League champion. This is what it’s all about — to prepare ourselves in the best conditions.”

Preview: Atletico Madrid vs. Espanyol - prediction, team news, lineups

Atletico Madrid will look to maintain their unbeaten start to the season when they play host to Espanyol in Wednesday's La Liga contest.

The newly-promoted visitors are waiting to get off the mark after beginning the campaign with back-to-back defeats.

Match preview

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone on August 19, 2024

Atletico Madrid may have aspirations of mounting a serious title challenge after making several notable additions in the summer transfer window.

Robin Le Normand and Conor Gallagher have strengthened the defence and midfield respectively, while Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth have been recruited to boost Diego Simeone 's forward options.

Having bolstered their squad, Atleti have made an encouraging start to the new season, collecting four points from their opening two matches.

They came from behind on two occasions to take a point off Villarreal at the Estadio de la Ceramica, before they produced a dominant home display in Sunday's game against Girona, with Antoine Griezmann , Marcos Llorente and Koke getting on the scoresheet in a 3-0 victory.

Atleti will now turn their focus to their first meeting with Espanyol since being involved in an entertaining 3-3 draw in May 2023, and they will be looking to extend their unbeaten run in head-to-head meetings to six matches.

Espanyol head coach Manolo Gonzalez on June 9, 2024

Espanyol spent just one season in the second tier after they won the Segunda Division playoffs to return to La Liga at the first time of asking.

Unfortunately for the Periquitos, they have entered the season without the services of last season's Segunda Division top scorer Martin Braithwaite , who departed upon the expiry of his contract before signing for Gremio on a free transfer.

Braithwaite's absence has been evident in Espanyol's first two matches, with the newly-promoted side struggling to offer a real goal threat in consecutive 1-0 defeats.

They fell to a narrow loss in their opening game against fellow newly-promoted side Real Valladolid, before Real Sociedad's Take Kubo scored an 80th-minute winner to condemn Espanyol to defeat in their first home game of the season.

Manolo Gonzalez 's side have their work cut out to claim their first points of the season in Wednesday's trip to the Metropolitano, but they may be able to draw some inspiration from the fact that they played out a 1-1 draw in their most recent away meeting with Atleti in November 2022.

Alexander Sorloth centre-forward of Atletico de Madrid and Norway celebrates after scoring on August 19, 2024

Atletico have reported no fresh injury concerns, ensuring Simeone that will have the majority of his squad available for Wednesday's home fixture.

The Atletico boss may take the opportunity to freshen up his side, with Alex Witsel , Nahuel Molina , Koke and Sorloth among those who could be considered for starting berths.

Gallagher is also pushing to make his first start after making his Atletico debut as a 58th-minute substitute at the weekend.

Recent arrival Clement Lenglet could feature in the matchday squad after completing a loan switch from Catalan giants Barcelona.

Meanwhile, Espanyol midfielder Edu Exposito is continuing to work on his rehabilitation from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Leandro Cabrera was forced to withdraw from Monday's training session due to a physical issue, and the experienced defender will have to be assessed ahead of Wednesday's away trip.

Sergi Gomez could be brought into the centre of the Espanyol defence if Cabrera is unable to prove his fitness in time.

Atletico Madrid possible starting lineup: Oblak; Gimenez, Witsel, Le Normand; Llorente, Gallagher, Koke, Lino; Griezmann, Alvarez; Sorloth

Espanyol possible starting lineup: Garcia; Tejero, El Hilali, Kumbulla, Gomez, Romero; Kral, Gragera, Milla; Veliz, Puado

We say: Atletico Madrid 2-0 Espanyol

Atleti would have taken confidence from Sunday's commanding win over Girona, and we think that they will produce another strong home display to maintain their unbeaten start and condemn Espanyol to a third consecutive defeat.

Joao Felix and Pedro Neto embrace whilst playing for Chelsea

As the clock ticks towards the end of the summer transfer window, Chelsea are still in desperate need of trimming the size of their bloated first-team squad.

Despite the departures of the likes of Conor Gallagher and Bashir Humphreys, the Blues are still trying to find homes for several players who are not in Enzo Maresca ’s first-team plans.

It comes after a busy transfer window which has seen Chelsea sign the likes of Joao Felix, who returns to Stamford Bridge following a six-month loan in 2023 , and former Wolves winger Pedro Neto.

Here’s a look at who Chelsea have signed in the summer 2024 transfer window and how much they have spent on new signings in total – along with their all-important net spend.

Who have Chelsea signed in the summer transfer window?

Joao felix – atletico madrid, £46.3m.

The versatile Portuguese forward spent half a season on loan in west London at the start of last year, which saw him net four goals in 16 Premier League appearances.

Felix scored his first goal in his second Chelsea stint in the 6-2 drubbing of Wolves at Molineux.

Pedro Neto – Wolves, £54m

Pedro Neto playing for Chelsea

Pedro Neto is Chelsea’s most expensive deal of the summer – thus far – having joined from Wolves for £54m.

The Portugal winger has signed a seven-year deal having also attracted interest from Arsenal.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall – Leicester City, £30m

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall playing for Chelsea

Having impressed under Maresca in the Championship, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall followed the Italian to Stamford Bridge over the summer.

The central midfielder made his competitive debut off the bench in the defeat to Manchester City.

Filip Jorgensen – Villarreal, £20.7m

Filip Jorgensen warms-up for Chelsea

With Djordje Petrovic falling out of favour under Maresca, Chelsea moved to bring in a replacement to compete with Robert Sanchez for the number one jersey.

That man was Filip Jorgensen who completed his move from Spanish side Villarreal for a fee just over £20m.

Marc Guiu – Barcelona,  £5m

Marc Guiu playing for Chelsea

Spanish youngster Marc Guiu was also picked up by club , signing from Barcelona for a relatively small £5m.

The 18-year-old impressed on Chelsea’s pre-season tour in the United States and came off the bench as a late replacement against City.

And the rest

Aston Villa youngster Omari Kellyman joined the Blues for £19m, while Chelsea also brought in centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo from another Premier League rival – Fulham – on a free transfer.

Further afield, Aarón Anselmino joined from Argentinian side Boca Juniors for £15.6m, while American full-back Caleb Wiley completed his switch from Atlanta for £8.5m.

Portuguese youngster Renato Veiga completed his move from FC Basel in a deal worth around £11.8m.

The Blues’ growing goalkeeping contingent has been further boosted by the arrival of Mike Penders , with the 19 year-old Belgian joining from Genk on a contract until 2032 having returned to the club on loan for the season.

Tosin Adarabioyo

How much have Chelsea spent in the summer transfer window and what is their net spend?

Chelsea have spent around £220m on new signings in the summer transfer window.

The West London side have also sold the likes of Ian Maatsen (£37.5m), Lewis Hall (£28m) and Omari Hutchinson (£20m), giving them a net spend of around -£98m.

How many players do Chelsea have in their squad?

At present, Chelsea’s first-team squad has 37 players in it , although Maresca was keen to confirm that many players are training separately as they look for moves away from the club.

The likes of Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell are training with the so-called ‘bomb squad’ and could move on before Friday’s deadline.

Kepa Arrizabalaga is set to join Bournemouth on loan , whilst Romelu Lukaku is edging closer to a permanent move to Napoli.

Here is a look at the complete list of players still at the club:

Giorgi Mamardashvili: Liverpool agree deal to sign 23-year-old goalkeeper from Valencia

Ben Southby

Published 27/08/2024 at 20:48 GMT

Giorgi Mamardashvili has put pen to paper on a X-year deal at Premier League side Liverpool after leaving Valencia where he made 100 appearances in Spain. The 23-year-old, who impressed for Georgia at the UEFA European Championships for Georgia this summer where he made more saves than any other goalkeeper, has joined the Reds in a reported £35 million deal.

Man City close to agreeing loan deal with Benfica for Issa Kabore despite Premier League interest

Manchester City are close to agreeing a loan deal for Issa Kabore to join Portuguese giants Benfica.

Kabore, 23, was on loan at Luton Town and had interest from Premier League clubs but a move has been negotiated for the right-back to move to Estádio da Luz where he will be playing Champions League football this season.

Pep Guardiola named Kabore on the substitutes’ bench at the weekend in the win over Ipswich Town , while also including him for the Community Shield after he was part of the pre-season tour.

After entering the final year of his contract at the Etihad Stadium, a decision had to be made on his future at City and Benfica were among the interested parties in the Burkina Faso international.

Kabore was signed from Mechelen in 2020 and had a loan spell back at the Belgian club, plus at Marseille and Troyes before his season at Luton where he was a regular in the top flight. He was on Tottenham’s radar when they considered a back-up in the right-back position but Djed Spence forced his way into the first-team plans.

City have not stood in the way of players leaving if the want regular football or a fresh challenge, regardless of being in Guardiola’s plans. Julian Alvarez headed to Atletico Madrid and a year ago Cole Palmer moved to Chelsea.

While Kabore was training with the first team and involved in matchday squads, Kyle Walker is Guardiola’s first choice and Rico Lewis has also broken into the first team.

Benfica have looked towards the English market this summer with Burnley forward Zeki Amdouni also a target before the transfer window closes. City, meanwhile, have sold Joao Cancelo, Sergio Gomez, and Taylor Harwood-Bellis for significant fees.

Chalobah eyed by Palace ahead of deadline day

Crystal Palace are set to make a late attempt to land Trevoh Chalobah and rescue him from exile at Chelsea .

Palace need to reshape their backline with Joachim Andersen rejoining Fulham and more talks over Marc Guehi joining Newcastle scheduled .

As revealed by Telegraph Sport last week, Palace are trying for Wolfsburg’s Maxence LaCroix which would fill one of the gaps. But Chalobah is also a target for the final days of the window, with the 25-year-old training away from the first-team squad at Stamford Bridge.

Palace took Guehi from Chelsea and have enjoyed taking loans from them before, with Conor Gallagher and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

Chalobah is part of a group of more than a dozen players who are working away from Enzo Maresca’s first-team squad at Chelsea. The exiled group also includes Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell, with the futures up in the air ahead of transfer deadline day.

United confirm midfield departure

Manchester United have agreed a further departure with Hannibal Mejbri joining Burnley for a deal that could rise to £9.4 million.

Hannibal, 21, has signed a four-year deal at Turf Moor with the Championship outfit paying £5.4 million up front and the rest in add-ons.

United have also inserted a buy back clause and have first refusal to match any bids for the Tunisia midfielder. They will also receive a percentage of his next transfer fee.

“After speaking to the coach [Scott Parker] the project sounded good to me and hopefully we can make success,” said Hannibal.

Southampton eye move for Cornet

Southampton will push to sign a goalkeeper in the final days of the summer transfer window and will weigh up a late move for West Ham forward Maxwel Cornet to add to their attacking options.

Russell Martin has been focused on signing Justin Bijlow from Feyenoord but the move broke down after the Dutch keeper failed a medical, with an old injury cited as the reason for heading back to his club.

Saints have England international c at the top of their goalkeeper list but Arsenal want a permanent deal for him which means a move is complicated. Wolves have walked away from a deal for Ramsdale over the price.

Martin has Cornet on his radar as a late loan from West Ham to bolster his forward line. Cornet, 27, had a hamstring injury last season and struggled to break into the team under David Moyes, with a move away for regular games now a possibility.

The Ivory Coast forward scored in his only Premier League start last season, against Sheffield United, and made 15 other appearances during the campaign. He has three years left on his contract so loaning him is an option for West Ham in the next days.

Atletico Madrid vs. Lokomotiv on CBS All Access: Live stream Champions League, how to watch on TV, odds, news

Lokomotiv moscow host atletico madrid in a group a match up on tuesday.

gettyimages-1229314665.jpg

Lokomotiv will look to stay competitive in the Champions League when they host Atletico Madrid on Matchday 3 this Tuesday. Both teams have familiarity with each other after facing each other in prior Champions League group stages. Lokomotiv are in third place in Group A after a loss to Bayern Munich last week, while Atletico head to Russia in second place following a 3-2 win against Red Bull Salzburg.

Here's how you can watch the match and what to know:

Viewing information

Lokomotiv Moscow: A fortunate point against Salzburg in their opening match is the difference between third and last place in the group for the Russian side. They are coming off a 2-1 loss against group leaders Bayern Munich and have familiarity facing off against Atletico in prior Champions League play. They will need another big performance from their attacking midfielder Anton Miranchuk. The 25-year-old leads the club in the Champions League with four shots and six chances created.

Atletico: The La Liga side is currently sitting in second place after winning 3-2 against RB Salzburg. It was a big comeback in the group after dropping their opening match in a demoralizing 4-0 loss against Bayern Munich. The team will likely look for another strong performance from Joao Felix, who scored the game-winning goal vs. Lokomotiv in both wins last season in the group stage. Last week, Felix gave Atletico the lead with a penalty in the 43rd minute and added the game winner in the 68th minute.

Felix comes up clutch once again and Atletico pick up the narrow win.  Pick: Atletico 2, Lokomotiv Moscow 1
