Sir Elton John, is a singer, composer, pianist and all round British national treasure who has been blessing the world with his talents for decades.

Born in 1947 as Reginald Kenneth Dwight, Elton experienced a fairly restrictive childhood growing up in Middlesex. His musical talents were clear from an early age, taking up the piano aged 3 and getting a scholarship to the Royal Academy of music at 11.

After a turbulent relationship with Elton’s father, who expressed very little interest in the young musician, Elton’s mother divorced and remarried. The new couple helped Elton secure a job as a pub pianist where he worked until he formed a now legendary partnership with Bernie Taupin in 1967, following an advert in the NME,.

With Bernie writing the lyrics and Elton the music (a tried and tested method that still works today), the duo began writing popular works for other artists such as ‘LuLu’ before beginning on Elton’s solo material. The release of Elton’s self-titled second album saw him take the first leap towards stardom. It spawned the hit single ‘Your Song’ and landed the album at number 4 and 5 on the US charts respectively.

1972’s ‘Honky Chateau’ became Elton’s first number one album and would be followed by 6 more consecutively, most famously ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ which stayed at the top spot for two months.

Outside of music, Elton has been a important figure for LGBT rights around the world. He publicly came out in 1988 and has since been a vocal figure for important social causes such as the AIDS crisis and gay marriage in the UK.

Live reviews

Elton John is an amazing singer but lastnight at Cardiff City Stadium was such a disappointment. The sound quality was absolutely dreadful. The sound Tech staff should hang their heads in shame. Our night was ruined from the minute the music started.

The speakers in the centre of the stadium were about 1-2 seconds delayed so there was a constant echo. If you didn’t know the words to the songs then you wouldn’t know what the hell he was singing because of the poor quality. I don’t expect to pay the money we did to see a mega star on his Farewell tour to listen to it like we had to. Everyone we spoke to was disappointed.

Then there was the security....or should I say lack of...? We entered via gate 9, I had a tag put on my bag saying it had been checked. The guy never even looked inside. No personal searches were done & no one was scanned either. DISGUSTING. In this day and age where terrorism & knife crime is at its worst in the Uk, I would expect more....ALOT more. May I remind the event organisers/security team of The Manchester Arena bombing....seriously. People were entering with rucksacks, large shopping bags, golf umbrellas that could be used as weapons had there been fights etc. Then we witnessed the stewards on the pitch chatting to each other, texting, filming Elton John & basically doing everything BUT supervise the crowds. An Absolute shambles from start to end.

I will certainly remember this concert but NOT for the right reasons.

Everyone who stepped into that stadium lastnight was FAILED & LET DOWN.

There aren’t many artists who have sold more then 300 million records worldwide, but Elton John is one of these superstar legends. His single ‘Candle in the Wind’ selling 33 million copies alone, there are few who could even dream of topping that. The scope of his work is remarkable, from singer-songwriter music through to songs for feature films. And a knighthood from the Queen? Goodness me Elton!

Part of the magic of his performances is seeing him sit alone at his piano, accompanying himself and improvising to his own score. Over the years of course, his voice has grown weaker, but the magic remains and his performances do not lose their power, as he is backed up by a stellar band. One man holding the attention of an arena audience seems like an incredible feat, but Elton John at home on the stage, has this down to a tee. Aiming to please the audience, he always provides a selection of his great hits as well as some of the lesser known tracks from his older albums for some variation, something that usually pleases the hungry crowd.

50 years of performances, and Elton John’s stamina remains incredibly impressive, and if you are lucky enough to get your hands on a ticket, you can expect to watch a performance of anything up to 2 hours, and I promise, it will fly by!

I have been an Elton John fan since the 70s and this concert in Roanoke was the first chance I have had to see him and The Elton John Band perform live. It exceeded any possible expectations!! The sound live is so all encompassing, the piano so mesmerizing and so many of my favorite EJ songs! To hear 'Your Song' done in concert is just the most beautiful experience! Other numbers especially noteworthy in this concert were 'Philadelphia Freedom', 'I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues', 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' and one of his newest songs 'Good Heart'. The encore finale number of 'Crocodile Rock' just blows away any recording of it I have ever heard, phenomenal concert!! No other performer I have ever seen went the whole concert the way Elton John did, just amazing, I am so thankful I went and I would see him again if he tours anywhere I can reasonably get to. AMAZING, you will regret it if you miss the opportunity to hear this iconic performer and his band! Nigel Olsson on Drums with EJ since 1969, Scottish guitarist Davey Johnstone since 1972 (crazy talented, must see live to fully appreciate!) Thanks for coming to Roanoke, VA, Elton!! <3 A fan forever here <3

The concert was AWESOME! It was the first time I saw Elton in Concert. I have every album he has made and grew up with his music. The concert was one I will never forget. Even though I enjoy all the instruments and artists in his band I could listen to just him alone playing his piano. He puts his heart and soul in his music and I find myself remembering my life and feeling all the feelings I have over the last 45 years. He thanked his fans and was so gracious but I felt like I needed to thank him. He is blessed with his music and I felt I was Thankful to have him share his gift with me. He did something I have never seen in a concert before which warmed my heart. He not only went from side to side thanking his fans and shaking their hands. He also bent down and signed autographs. He was amazing. He took his time with his fans. So few times have I seen other artists take a second of their time to do the same. But Elton with his magnitude of success did far more than I have ever seen. I felt lucky and blessed to finally see the one concert I wanted to see for the last 45 years. Thank you Sir Elton John for sharing your heavenly talent! I am in Awe!

The SHOW was great, as a whole--I think. Video productions, etc. were awesome. Musicians looked to be performing well. The sound SUCKED! The sound in the Dallas American Airlines Center was so loud--especially the lower frequencies--that the mix was unintelligible. It was literally too loud to understand. We could distinguish not one word that was sung by Elton John--NOT ONE! Of course, we knew most of the words to the songs, but the only place we could distinguish those words was in our memories. If we EVER go to another rock/pop concert at AAC, it will be with earplugs, although even those probably wouldn't have helped at this concert. Covering my ears with my hands failed to significantly reduce the bass. I feel as though I paid $500 for two tickets to a video with an undecipherable soundtrack. While the SHOW was great, in general it was a disappointment. I have seen/heard Eric Clapton three previous times at AAC, and, while the sound was loud at those concerts, it was nothing like the Elton John concert. I suspect the fault lies with Elton John's engineers, so maybe this will be a problem elsewhere too.

This show was completely misrepresented by ALL promoters! The vast majority of concert goers thought we were going to witness a live concert with Elton backed by the Orchestra. What we received was a grossly overpriced movie showing of “Rocketman” with the Orchestra playing in the background during certain scenes.

A piano was brought out on stage during the movie intermission. At the tail end the film director introduced Elton, Bernie & the Actors. One song was performed with Elton on piano & Taron singing. That was a 5 minute nicety after a 3 hour let down.

I met two nice ladies who flew in from Canada dressed up and super excited only to be completely disappointed.

They gave out free concert posters at the end of show as we were exiting, that didn’t even represent what was real. I contemplate if I even want to hang on my wall as I do not wish to remember this experience because it was not a true representation of the night or what the poster implies.

We should ALL be refunded!!!!

Elton, were you aware of this advertising scam?

The production was first class by Baby Boomer standards; however, I would grade the performance as a B. Elton doesn't have the voice anymore, so he doesn't try for the real high notes and resorts to screaming some of the lyrics. The music was pretty tight, though he took liberties with the melody sometimes. Overall, it was a great show but it wasn't the best. I understand he will be performing over 300 concerts throughout this farewell tour, lasting into the Fall of 2021. That's a lot. He's not getting any younger and, in fact, he's seems to have some difficulty with mobility.

You can Google his play list but it doesn't include some of his bigger hits (Honky Cat or Harmony). He did go for nearly 2 hours straight and came back for a 2-song encore. I had comp tickets, but probably wouldn't pay the $300+ if I had to buy them. Glad I went, though. He is a legend!

Great concert. I was six rolls up from the Floor. There was two screens one on each side of the stage over the seats. Started at 8/7c. I live in Al. so I like the hour time difference. It was a sold out concert. Everybody was standing up dancing by their seats. Elton left the stage after just guessing 20 songs. After he left the stage. Everybody was hooping and hollowing, clapping like crazy. He came back and sang one more song before the show ending at around 10:40/9:40c. This was the 3rd E.J. concert. 1st was in 1999 in Chattanooga Tn. He was there alone. Then Sept. 12, 2012 in Huntsville, Al. with the band. And this time with the band. I didn't go to the 2013 Chattanooga concert because it hasn't been that long since I saw him in Huntsville. Now I'm waiting for Rod Stewart to come to Chattanooga. I saw him in Tampa Fl. when I lived near by for a short time.

The concert was fantastic. This was my 6th Elton John concert that I have been to and he never fails to please the crowd. Sadly the wind effected the sound though. Elton's tribute to Jonah Lomu was really heartfelt and beautiful. It was so lovely to see the whole audience swaying and holding up their cel phones and singing along with Elton to Don't let the sun go down on me. The same thing was done to one of my favourite songs, Candle in the wind which was written about Marilyn Monroe and later changed for Princess Diana it to was really emotional I will never forget that. The thing about Elton John is that you could tell that he really wanted to be there and that he truly loves what he does. He is a proffesional polished act. The other thing that was so good was that there were people of all ages at the concert. Elton John's music is timeless and ageless.

Wendyallen’s profile image

Well Elton has the sense to understand that his won't hit all the high notes he used to do. So he has adapted the songs to sung writhing his band, and he sings them comfortably. But they are not exactly as you may remember hearing them. After all you are listening to the original artist, but a different variant of the song. Some of them worked really well, like Bennie and the Jets, Saturday nights alright for fighting, others not so, like Tiny Dancer. Overall a credit to a master performer, plays for over 2 and a half hours. The thank you towards the fans of Australia was quite emotional, for him and us. All unscripted, he went deep into all the years of support and encouragement he received from Aus.

Possibly one of the best entertainers of his era, certainly the most flamboyant. We thank you and Bernie for your contribution of classic songs. Leon

Hints and tips for improving your chances of getting Elton John tickets

Make sure you have a my ticketmaster account.

Get the basics covered before tickets go on sale by logging in and checking your Ticketmaster account ahead of time. If you don’t have a Ticketmaster Account then make sure you sign up in advance –  Ticketmaster.com.au .

Sign into your My Ticketmaster account ahead of time

Remember to triple check your passwords, account information, and billing information are all filled in correctly in advance, that way you’re not facing any last-minute account updates when trying to process your order.

Keep your options open with ‘Best Available’

Save time by searching “Best Available,” which scans all sections fast – it’s quicker than searching sections one at a time.

Keep an eye on the clock

There will be a time limit applied to all transactions as they’re progressed through the ticket purchasing stages. Remember to keep an eye on the timer on your screen and move through the processing pages as quickly as possible (this is even easier when you’ve completed the account set-up stage we mentioned above).

Don’t refresh your screen

Stick to one window while you’re in the  Waiting Room  and when you’re being pushed through  the Smart Queue  and always resist the urge to refresh.

Hitting the refresh button means you’ll lose your place in the queue and, as frustrating as it can get, patience is the only way to win this game. Ticketmaster is equipped with sophisticated systems that are designed to manage and process ticket purchases as quickly as possible. Elton John Plays Final US Concert: Images, Set List

Elton John  has played his final U.S. concert, delivering a rousing farewell set at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

Over the corse of more than two and half hours, the music legend performed many of his most beloved tracks. The night opened with the classic 1974 chart-topping single "Bennie and the Jets," before then rolling into an emphatic rendition of "Philadelphia Freedom." "I Guess That's Why They Call it the Blues," "Tiny Dancer" and "Rocket Man (I Think It's Going to Be a Long, Long Time)" were among the further highlights in a set that was full of them (complete set list can be found below).

Throughout the concert, Elton made reference to the historical significance of the night and his long relationship with Los Angeles. The singer mentioned that his  first performance on American shores took place at the Troubadour in West Hollywood . Five years later, he’d play a pari of sold-out performances at Dodger Stadium , the legendary gigs ranking among the most famous of his career.

Several celebrity friends joined Elton for his final American performance. Singer Brandi Carlile came out to duet on "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me," while Kiki Dee later joined John in the duo's classic duet, "Don't Go Breaking My Heart."

After a brief pause, Elton returned for an encore, donning an outfit reminiscent of his famous sequined Dodgers ensemble from 1975. He welcomed pop star Dua Lipa to perform with him on "Cold Heart," the chart-topping hit from last year. Long-time collaborator Bernie Taupin was later brought onstage, much to the delight of the crowd.

As the performance was coming to a close, Elton spoke eloquently about his decision to retire from the road.

“I’m stopping touring, and this will be my last concert in America and Canada," the singer confessed. "And the reason why I’m [done] touring, I think you know, is because I want to spend time with my family. So, I want to bring them out and show you why I’m retiring: David, Zachary and Elijah.” At this point John's husband, David Furnish, and the couple's two sons came on stage, once again eliciting a roar from the crowd.

Elton then gave a heartfelt thanks to his U.S. fans.

"I became successful first in America," the rocker noted, while expressing his gratitude to everyone who purchased his music and attended his concerts. "So I want to thank you for that. You made me. Without America, I wouldn’t be here.”

Before playing his final song of the night, the rock icon delivered one parting message: “I wish you health, and love, prosperity. Be kind to each other. And farewell.”

Sir Elton John, 77, gives fans hope for live performing again after retiring

Elton John has opened up about performing live after retirement (Picture: Simone Joyner/Getty Images)

Sir Elton John has spoken about whether he will continue to perform live, following his retirement.

Sir Elton retired from touring last year, saying  farewell in Sweden , the final show of the 330-date Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour.

The event took place after Elton’s huge Glastonbury set in 2023 – with some fans believing they may not have the opportunity to see the singer perform live again

In a candid excerpt from his new book published on September 24, the 77-year-old singer revealed he still plans to perform live – but not to tour again.

The singer said in Farewell Yellow Brick Road: Memories Of My Life on Tour: ‘I’ve been clear with my fans that while the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour is the culmination of my touring career, I still plan to perform live.

‘What this will entail I don’t know yet.’

Elton John now sits with hands folded, wearing black outfit, with brown wall behind him.

At the end of his final concert in Sweden , after a moving performance of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Elton told the thousands in the crowd: ‘The last one and we’re ending it in the beautiful city of Stockholm in Sweden. My very first (show) Sweden was July 7 1971, so more or less 52 years ago to the day.’

He thanked his superfans who had supported him for decades throughout his career: ‘You have no idea how much that means to me.’

He then reflected: ‘I’ve had the most wonderful career, beyond belief. 52 years of pure joy playing music, how lucky am I to play music?

‘But I wouldn’t be sitting here if it wasn’t for you. You bought the singles, albums and CDs and more importantly, you bought the  tickets  to the shows and you know how I love to play live.’

At the time he confirmed to fans that he would ‘never be touring again’, but revealed he may do a ‘one-off thing’ sometime in the future – adding that would be ‘miles away’.

Last week, the Your Song legend revealed he was partially blind in one eye after struggling with an infection.

‘Over the  summer , I’ve been dealing with a severe eye infection that has unfortunately left me with only limited vision in one eye,’ he began.

‘I am healing but it’s an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye.’

‘I am grateful for the excellent team of doctors and nurses and my family, who have taken such good care of me over the last several weeks.

He revealed he felt positive about his recovery but spent the past few months recuperating. ‘I have been quietly spending the summer recuperating at home, and am feeling positive about the progress I have made in my healing and recovery thus far,’ he said.

Although he may not be touring anytime soon, since finishing his lengthy tour last year he has released this recent book and has promoted his upcoming documentary titled Elton John: Never Too Late!

The documentary will examine his career in detail and will be released on December 13 through Disney Plus.

Air Discusses North American Tour, Olympic Ceremony Performance and the Prospect of New Music: ‘We Need to Feel the Audience Really Wants It’

From left, Jean-Benoit Dunckel and Nicolas Godin

French electronic group Air marked the 25th anniversary of its landmark debut album “Moon Safari” in Jan. 2023. But as the dreamy, mid-tempo outliers jockeying for position with Daft Punk , Bob Sinclar, Cassius and Etienne de Crecy during the dancefloor-filling French Touch movement, duo Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoit Dunckel have always moved at their own pace.

Hoda Kotb to Exit NBC's 'Today' in Early 2025

Popular on variety.

[ This interview has been edited and condensed. ]

How’s your week been? Relaxing, I imagine, after last weekend.

Nicolas Godin: Yeah. I never felt such pressure. The first TV show we did as Air in ’97, it was live on a show that was very famous that I used to watch when I was a teenager. So that was a lot of stage fright, but last week may have been worse.

I was annoyed to see NBC cut to a commercial when you guys started playing.

Godin: Yeah, it’s such a shame. I don’t understand why they did that just in America. You have commercials all the time everywhere — it’s a disease.

What prompted you to choose “Playground Love” in particular?

It was, obviously, a huge spectacle, but it was also surprisingly subdued. did you know what the whole experience was going to be like.

Godin: No. We rehearsed two or three weeks [beforehand]. We did a show at the Parisian airport, Charles de Gaulle, and we rehearsed the track there and played it live. And then when we arrived at the Olympics, we thought we would have time to rehearse the track, but it was just a briefing. And then I saw Tom Cruise rehearsing his jump. Even he rehearsed! But that was it. It was fun, because Phoenix and us grew up in the same town. We spent the afternoon with them in the dressing room, and it was a nice friendship moment.

How much did the tour make the Olympics performance a little bit more manageable?

Jean-Benoit Dunckel: At Charles de Gaulle, because we recorded the tape and we played together, we knew the song and the atmosphere of the song. But with Phoenix, we played with them when we were really young. They were sort of our backing band, when we used to play with them on TV shows. So it was a historic moment for us.

Godin: It’s once-in-a-lifetime. This is the first time we played in a stadium … I saw so many YouTube videos of the Rolling Stones, or Led Zeppelin, or Elton John walking in the hallways of a stadium. I thought, “I did the same walk!”

Was it tough to be present in the moment?

Godin: Yeah, it went too fast to enjoy really.

Dunckel: Yeah. It doesn’t make any sense to be in the stadium, because you can’t hear anything, you don’t know where the cameras are, so you just do your thing. I was definitely trying to enjoy the moment. The noise of the audience is really something because it comes from everywhere. You feel being like you’re in the Olympic circus, like in the Romans’ time. You are waiting to be eaten by lions, actually.

Godin: The fact that it was the Olympics, a big symbol of fraternity and humankind, I thought it was so warm — the energy of all these athletes from all around the world, and everybody was nice and happy. It was unbelievable. In the middle of the mess that’s the world right now, I think that was the most impressive thing for me. That’s the most precious gift of that day, to be in the middle of so much beautiful spirit. I will remember it all my life, that I feel surrounded by people from all over the world. It was a nice parenthesis, like a bubble — a strange version of the world where nobody hates each other.

The tour you’re doing commemorates the 25th anniversary of “Moon Safari.” When and how did you first conceive it?

Dunckel: But also, I was thinking that it’s better to play your best stuff because it sounds better on stage, but performing one album on stage delivers a certain unique atmosphere to the audience. They really like that special, unique, childlike atmosphere of “Moon Safari.” And I think it works because we do “Moon Safari,” and then we do four or five of our best songs, and it gives a unique show.

Godin: Also, it brings freshness to the tour, because on an album, you put your best song at the beginning, but when you do a concert, you put your best song at the end. And we play songs we never play live, like, “Ce matin là.” It’s like a time capsule. Everywhere I go, there’s “Moon Safari” posters, “Moon Safari” albums. It’s like a big loop. You know “Quantum Leap,” the TV show? It’s the same thing — suddenly, you wake up, and you’re back in ’98.

Was the album always going to be played sequentially, or was there ever a discussion of shuffling tracks around?

Godin: No. We wanted to be honest, because the people who lived with this album when it was released, it’s imprinted in their minds. At the end of each song, you know what song is next. It’s like the B-side of “Abbey Road” — I’m not comparing “Moon Safari” to “Abbey Road,” because The Beatles are way better than us — but when one song finishes, you know what’s next. And we didn’t want to break that sensation. It’s a sacred experience people had with the album, and performing the songs in order is a trademark for fans from our generation.

Were certain songs uniquely difficult to adapt to perform them live? You said “Ce matin là” was one that you had not performed before.

Godin: We didn’t want to fake things. “Ce matin là” has a horn melody, and so we replaced the horn melody with a Moog, but the Minimoog is even better because it makes the song much more cheesy — in a good way. It fits the spirit of the track even better.

Dunckel: What we had to adapt is ourselves, because the songs are all right. I think that songs are like little animals — they live by themselves, and they need humans to exist. The instrumentation works on the album, so there is no reason that it doesn’t work onstage. It’s just us, we have to be open, and to play it right. It took a few shows to find the right energy with the audience, because “Ce matin là,” as Nicolas said, they like it as it is.

What preparation did it take for the two of you to settle back into playing together?

Dunckel: Maybe we are still adapting. I don’t know. The songs are under the fingers, they are ready to be played.

Godin: When we play together, there’s a chemistry. When we were in rehearsals, “La femme d’argent” was the first song we played, and I got goosebumps. I think a good band is when the right people play together. You could play with someone else who’s even better, but it will not work. There’s a mystery in that.

The last time I interviewed you individually , you both declined to say, “We’re breaking up.” How much has the tour given you a middle path to keep working together without having to go through the combustible circumstances of creating new music?

Godin: Yeah, I forgot how much the tour kept us from the rest of our everyday life.

Do you see the North American leg as different from the previous ones?

Godin: I think the U.S. run will be more close to the concerts we had at the beginning. When we started, the idea was to do a Stanley Kubrick vision of an object — a very pure, white rectangle in beautiful theaters. The fact that the American tour would be indoors in some venues, it’s going to be much closer to the idea we had at the beginning. Also, we play “Moon Safari” in order, so at festivals, sometimes it’s just strange, but in a venue, in a concert hall, it makes more sense.

Has this process prompted you two to reminisce, or do you typically stay in contact enough that it’s not so much of a nostalgic exercise?

Dunckel: We are much more in contact now, and we have so much time to kill, so sometimes we speak about the past, and we have some funny stories. It brings a bit of fun to the tour.

Godin: When you have a career, it’s very violent, there is stress, but now when we think of our career, we think more of the good moments. It’s very strange. Everything is more positive right now. I think we finally understand the luck we have to have Air in our life, and this tour helped us consider that in a much more profound way.

What told you when you were making “Moon Safari” that you were onto something really special?

Godin: While we were doing “Moon Safari,” we could feel suddenly something was strong about what we were doing as a whole, like you have a creature in front of you, and it’s very impressive. I think when you do a record, obviously you need to be able to compose a good song, but you need to put inside the song a piece of energy that’s unique. Being an artist is about building a box to welcome a piece of life, whether it’s a song, a painting, a book. It can be sometimes a very complex song, and sometimes a very simple song, as long as there’s a piece of life in it. But because we were a witness to that, when it’s not there, we know — and that’s hard. It’s hard when you go in the studio and you create something, and that piece of life is not in it. That’s the way we can check if we are doing a good record or a bad record, because we know when this piece of life is in the track, or when it’s not. And we don’t lie to ourself. And I think if we make music together again, it’s only if we can feel that we put this life is in the songs.

Dunckel: We’re able to compose shitty music too. We have to admit it.

Godin: And the paradox is that the worse the song, the more you work on it to make it good. So being a musician sometimes is really depressing, because you spend your whole day working on a bad song, because the good songs are good so you don’t need to work on them.

Nicolas, you described “Moon Safari,” “Virgin Suicides” and “Talkie Walkie” as classic albums, or your favorites. JB, do you agree with that assessment, and what catapults those records to the ranks of classics?

Has this process put you guys in the mind frame of beginning to consider creating new music together.

Godin: Yeah. Personally, I would not mind, but you have to go with the flow, and also, we need a good launching pad — not an excuse, but something more. It needs to come naturally. My position in terms of making new music, whether it is with Air or with me, is that I feel like we’ve done what we had to do. Making “Moon Safari” and “Talkie Walkie,” I think I really did what I was meant to be on Earth. I’m not doing music because it’s a job, so it needs to be amazing. And that’s very complex. But I don’t know. It’s like the Olympics — we will be ready, but we will not provoke it.

Dunckel: For me, it’s a matter of mood. The mood has to be right, the environment has to be right, and I don’t know how it’s going to be.It’s not only a matter of vision about a new album, I have to believe if it’s necessary or not. Maybe I need also to feel the audience really wants it. Maybe there are fans who say they’re interested by [new music from] Air, but maybe they will be not actually because they are pleased with what we have done already.

Godin: Yeah, because all the old bands that we used to love, when they make new albums, do we like them? It’s a question. I don’t want to do that for Air — it would be sad. If you make an album and everybody prefer the ones you did in the past, why are you doing this? I’m such a big fan of some bands, and I didn’t even listen to the last album they released, and the history of music business is like that. I don’t think one person in the audience [at a Rolling Stones concert] wants them to play one of their last album’s songs. I think they would all prefer them to play “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and “Satisfaction.”

Or, maybe we could do something completely different than we did in the past, so fans will not be able to compare it to our old albums. In a way, when we did “Virgin Suicides” after “Moon Safari,” when we did the soundtrack that was a way for us to escape the problem. Maybe we need this kind of project to avoid the comeback.

Dunckel: The question is, is a band able to do something fresh and unique again, or is it going to be trying to imitate what they did before? Because when I was young, I hated old musicians’ music. When you were over 35, for me, it was shitty music. I said to myself, “I can feel what people think when they see old guys doing music together.” Again, so, it has to be really strong, and unique, and fresh. And maybe it will happen, because when we stopped the band for 10 years, it can give us something unique. Because we tour and because we study music, and we still record, we’ve learned a lot. We are not beginners any more, and there are so many other things to say. But the thing with music is that when you lie, you can hear this lie. So you have to be honest all of the time. Otherwise, people can feel dishonesty in the note, and in the sound.

Elton John will play five special ‘encore’ concerts in Australia and New Zealand next year, extending his ongoing multi-year ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour’, which will mark his final run of shows.

John will kick off the new round of dates in Newcastle, New South Wales on January 10, 2023 before heading to Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. He will then head to New Zealand to perform in Christchurch on January 24. He will then fly to Auckland to perform two rescheduled shows on January 27 and 28.

“In 2020 I promised that when I came back to finish my interrupted farewell, I’d perform some encore shows,” the singer-songwriter said when announcing the new dates. “I love your part of the world dearly and cannot wait to share these concerts with you!”

Tickets for Elton John’s newly- announced shows in Newcastle, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane in Australia and Christchurch in New Zealand will go on sale on Monday, August 1 at staggered intervals beginning at 12pm local time. Members of Elton John’s Rocket Club will be able to access the fan club pre-sale on July 28. Tickets for the rescheduled Auckland shows are available now beginning at NZD99.

John recently began the UK leg of his ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road’ tour in Norwich on June 15. Having first announced the first UK dates for his final ever run of shows in 2018, he had been set to play a run of rescheduled UK headline dates between October and December 2021.

However, he was forced to postpone those gigs to 2023 after sustaining a hip injury from an “awkward” fall.

John will have played over 300 shows across five continents by the time the tour concludes in July next year.

In an NME cover story last October, John said that this tour will really be his last, explaining, “It’s something I wanna finish. I’m looking forward to doing it and going out on the high that we were on – we were an express train that hit the buffers. At the moment I finish supposedly in 2023, in the summer, by which time I’ll be 76 – and that’s it, baby.”

Elton John’s new ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road’ tour ‘encore’ concert dates in 2023 are:

Australia: Tuesday, January 10 – McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle, NSW Friday, January 13 – AAMI Park, Melbourne, VIC Wednesday, January 18 – Allianz Stadium, Sydney, NSW Saturday, January 21 – Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane, QLD

Elton john’s new book, ‘farewell yellow brick road: memories of my life on tour,’ is out now.

M Eltonjohnfarewelltourbook 012424

Elton John ‘s new book, Farewell Yellow Brick Road: Memories of My Life on Tour , is out now . It includes Elton’s detailed reminiscences of his touring career, both from the past and from his final trek, which wrapped up last year.

The book includes a forward by Elton’s husband and manager, David Furnish , and an introduction by Elton in which he gives a bit of background on his five decades of touring, as well as his decision to stop.

“Imagine this book as a montage of moments from my distant and recent past, like a convergence of flashing memories,” he writes. “It will give you a glimpse of what it was like to say goodbye to the road and hello to whatever is next.”

That’s followed by a section in which Elton talks about conceptualizing the tour, from the sets and costumes to the set list. Each subsequent chapter in the book is titled after a different city or country that Elton visited during the tour, which, due to COVID-19, spanned from 2018 to July 2023. From the U.S. to the U.K. to Australia and back, Elton recalls what it was like playing in each place, both in the past — if applicable — and during the Farewell tour.

There are also Concert Flashback chapters, where he recalls specific and memorable shows, such as Live Aid in 1985, where he shares his memories of hanging out with his friend Freddie Mercury backstage. There’s also a chapter on what he did when COVID-19 put the tour on hold for months.

Throughout, there are plenty of photos documenting Elton onstage and off, plus set lists, photos of Elton with his celebrity pals and their quotes about the tour, wardrobe and memorabilia photos and more.

Elton John’s final Australian tour just got a whole lot bigger, with the legendary singer-songwriter today announcing half a dozen stadium dates for his farewell performances down under.

Riding high on the success of his big screen biopic Rocketman, it seems Elton mania is as big as ever.

The six new outdoor shows, which go on sale Tuesday 25 June, take Australia’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road concert tally to 32 (38 including New Zealand’s six performances) — and now carry the mammoth tour through five months, beginning in Perth on 30 November 2019 and wrapping up in March 2020.

His final stop on the Australia-New Zealand leg of the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour will land at the newly rebuilt Bankwest Stadium in Parramatta on Saturday 7 March, becoming the very first music performance to take place at the Western Sydney venue.

“We’re thrilled to be adding even more dates to Elton’s final tour”, said promoter Michael Chugg in a press release. “Demand has been absolutely incredible, we know the Rocketman is going to create magic memories for Australia and New Zealand when he arrives later this year!”

Zach Bryan Returns to Monthly Boxscore Summit With $93 Million in August

The Quittin' Time Tour transitions to a stadium-heavy schedule, yielding the biggest numbers of his career.

By Eric Frankenberg

Eric Frankenberg

Zach Bryan

For the sixth consecutive month, Zach Bryan has one of the 10 biggest tours in the world. For the second of the last three, he’s at No. 1. According to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore, Bryan grossed $93.2 million and sold 467,000 tickets from 13 shows around the U.S., returning to the top of Billboard ’s monthly Top Tours chart.

Luke Bryan

Luke Bryan Saddles Up for Eighth Album 'Mind of a Country Boy': Stream It Now

Bryan kicked off The Quittin’ Time Tour in March at a string of North American arenas. By the end of May and into June, he began sprinkling in stadium plays, multiplying his potential nightly audience by three or four and prompting his first monthly win. In August, stadiums made up the majority of his calendar — for 10 of his 13 shows. Those were spread across major markets such as Atlanta, Philadelphia and Minneapolis, leaving only Kansas City and Grand Forks, N.D., in arenas.

2024 August Boxscore, Top Tours

This transition from indoor basketball courts to outdoor football fields joins Bryan with fellow country superstars such as Luke Combs and Wallen as well as the biggest of the big beyond genre, like The Rolling Stones and Taylor Swift .

A double-header at Philly’s Lincoln Financial Field earned the biggest gross of Bryan’s career. The Aug. 6-7 stay earned $20.7 million and sold 103,000 tickets, followed immediately by another six-digit attendance total at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Aug. 10-11 ($17.8 million; 100,000 tickets).

Since beginning in Chicago on March 5, The Quittin’ Time Tour has grossed $318.1 million and sold 1.6 million tickets. Bryan will resume the trek with 18 shows in November and December. Most of his remaining 2024 dates bring him back to arenas, which means he could add another $60 million by year’s end, approaching the $400 million mark.

2024 August Boxscore, Top Boxscores

Bryan’s summer on top was briefly interrupted by Coldplay’s July victory. This month, Chris Martin & Co. dip to No. 2, with a gross of $86.4 million from 626,000 tickets sold. Though the band misses Bryan’s high mark by about 7%, its attendance total is tops for August.

As has been customary amid the Music of the Spheres World Tour, Coldplay ’s August schedule was compact, including three shows in Munich, four in Vienna and two in Dublin. The extended run at Vienna’s Ernst Happen Stadion on Aug. 21-22 and 24-25 is both the highest grossing ($33 million) and bestselling engagement of the month (251,000 tickets).

As Billboard reported , The Music of the Spheres World Tour is already the highest grossing and bestselling rock tour in Boxscore history, with $1.06 billion and 9.6 million tickets sold through Sept. 2. Next on its record-breaking schedule is the 10 million ticket threshold, which will certainly clear during the Australia and New Zealand leg in October and November.

2024 August Boxscore, Top Venues (15,001+ Capacity)

Metallica follows at No. 3 on August’s Top Tours chart with $74 million and 621,000 tickets. The latter figure barely misses Coldplay’s ticket sales, separated by just 5,000 tickets, or less than 1%. The hard-rock legends sport two appearances in the top 10 of Top Boxscores, at Nos. 8-9 with stints at Foxborough’s Gillette Stadium and Chicago’s Soldier Field, respectively.

At No. 4, P!nk is the lone woman in August’s top 10 at $55.6 million and 329,000 tickets, next followed by Jhene Aiko ’s $16.3 million and 150,000 tickets. While gender representation can be marked by the whims of monthly schedules – there were five women on the charts for June and July, and September marks the launches of major treks by Sabrina Carpenter , Charli XCX and Billie Eilish – it’s startling to see women make up less than 7% of August’s top-30 pie.

2024 August Boxscore, Top Venues (2,501-5k Capacity)

Interrupting Coldplay’s sweep of Top Boxscores, Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival is No. 2. The San Francisco festival grossed $29.5 million and sold 184,000 tickets across its Aug. 9-11 run.

Outside Lands is joined by Montreal’s Osheaga Music & Arts Festival, which rounds out the chart’s top 10 with $14.7 million and 137,000 tickets sold. It’s one of a string of festivals, along with Ilesoniq and Lasso Montreal, that pushed Evenko to No. 5 on the month’s Top Promoters ranking.

On the venue rankings, it’s the fourth consecutive win for Sphere among rooms with a capacity of 15,001 or more (excluding stadiums). Again, Dead & Company ushered the immersive arena to its victory, which closed out its summer-long residency on Aug. 10.

Elton John: Australian tour dates announced

The Rocket Man will arrive in early 2023 and tour dates include Newcastle (January 10), Melbourne (January 13), Sydney (January 18) and Brisbane (January 21).

The 75-year-old first started his 30-date farewell tour of Australia in late 2019 and wrapped up in March 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic halted international touring.

His upcoming shows mark the first time the 25-time platinum artist has performed in Newcastle.

Frontier Touring promoter Michael Chugg said while the Rocket Man had performed in the Hunter Valley several times, he believed the show at McDonald Jones Stadium would draw new interest.

We know a lot of people in Newcastle don't go to the valley," he said. "And the stadiums had a big face lift. So we thought that would be pretty cool.

"I expect we'll get a great crowd. I know people will travel from Tamworth, Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie. The one thing about Elton is once you see him you want to go and see him again, because he's so brilliant.

"It will be an unbelievable show, he plays nearly three hours and it's full on Elton. Every song's a hit."

The veteran promoter hoped the concert would inspire more artists to add Newcastle to their touring schedules. "We'll be looking at it with any other major acts we bring in," Mr Chugg said.

Venues NSW CEO Kerrie Mather also believed the event would be a sign of things to come, saying it was an "incredibly exciting result for the region".
