Best Airboat Ride in the Florida Everglades

A Florida Everglades Airboat Ride to Remember

Each year, visitors come from all over the globe to Billie Swamp Safari . One of the main reasons is to explore the “River of Grass” on our airboat ride and experience the wonders of the Florida Everglades. As a family-friendly ride, visitors can see fish, snakes, turtles, alligators and so much more. At the same time, our trained guides will show you how nature has persevered in fashioning one of the world’s most intriguing environments. With the wind at your back, you will discover the untamed Florida Everglades.

Exhilarating and Wondrous Wilderness Adventure Tour

Everglades airboat rides  at Billie Swamp Safari are fantastic! – an experience to remember forever and exciting for kids, as well as moms and dads! All you have to do is kick-back and take in the sights and sounds of the unspoiled Everglades. But hold on to your hat! Our Everglades airboats move fast and will twist and turn you through our river of grass trail. The 25-minute thrill ride will be a family fun experience to cherish forever, while giving you and your family a rare experience to enjoy Florida’s most exciting natural attraction – Florida Everglades! A subtropical wonderland full of tremendous wildlife and plant life. Airboat rides at Billie Swamp Safari are just awesome. In fact, you may want to keep airboat riding until the park closes!

Everglades History and Nature are Fun and Exciting

The Florida Everglades are not like ninth-grade algebra. On the contrary, the Everglades  present great history that is fun to learn. For example, where else in the world can visitors find an untamed subtropical ecosystem with over 300 years of storied Seminole Indian history ? There’s so much to know about the Seminole history in the Everglades. Thus,  it’s difficult to grasp everything in just one visit. And that’s just as well, because families who enjoy the Florida Everglades on an airboat ride always seem excited to return to Billie Swamp Safari ! For parents looking to treat the kids to something educational and entertaining, our Everglades airboat tours provide a breathtaking ride and a close look into one of the most unique natural habitats found anywhere around the globe.

Experienced Airboat Guides You Can Count on

Billie Swamp Safari airboat guides are more than boat captains! In fact, many of them are Seminole themselves and have grown up in the Florida Everglades wilderness. What does that mean to you? It means they have intimate knowledge of the waterways, creatures and plant life that you will see on your Everglades tour. As such, they can easily point to unique flora and fauna, while knowing when to slow down for aquatic wildlife.  More specifically, our Everglades airboat guides will make sure you get to see the usually “unseen” during the 25-minute airboat tour.

"Every derail was attended to promptly and cheerfully. We had an in-flight emergency needing a last minute change and Lucia and Ramiro were all over it. They turned what could have been a travel disaster due to airlines cancellations into a wonderful two day experience at Iguazu Falls. They are great! Thank you!

Juliana shek, iguazu falls - last minute booking.

"We had a last minute decision going to the Iguazu Falls enroute a visit to Rio. We flew from Canada and arrived São Paulo on 23rd Feb morning, and Foz do Iguazu at night time. During the time we were at São Paulo airport, we looked for Iguazu Falls tours the next day, coz we would leave for Rio on 25th Feb. What a blessing I found this website. Walter promptly arranged the tour for me at almost the closing of business hours. He followed up assuring the hotel pick up at 9am the next morning on 24th Feb. Joao was one of the best tour guides I had. With his guide, we saw the best parts of the Falls from both sides of Argentina and Brazil. While hiking the Argentina side trail, we saw monkeys, a poisonous snake, birds, butterflies catfish, lizards and many more. Joao explained to us how some of the endangered species were protected. Very interesting. Joao assisted us to go through customs. It was very smooth going from Brazil to Argentina and coming back. We were so much into taking photos we forgot about our lunch. We felt very sorry for Joao but he just kept going to all the best points so we could take our best pictures. Our apologies. When the trip was finished, Walter checked with us to make sure we were safely back to our hotel. I am very thankful to Walter and his team. Can't believe Mother Nature creating such a magnificent landscape, and we could see it without hassle last minute. Such a wonderful time! I would highly recommend Walter to everyone. Thanks again, Walter and Joao.

We were picked up from our hotel on….

"We were picked up from our hotel on time and taken to Buenos Aires airport and everything went smoothly. Our driver and tour guide for the day Alex was waiting for us and took us to start our adventure. The iguaza Falls exceed everyones expectations they are wonderous. Alex took us on the upper trail first, then the boat ride of a life time to go into the falls we got soaked and were so 😊happy and you can buy a video after for $15us Alex then took on lower trail which i personally thought were the best. All in all Alex's trip was fantastic knew his stuff and explained everything we wanted to know.. Brilliant trip would recommend to everyone.

Sam oertwig, best service for seeing iguazu falls.

"Can't imagine a better, more seamless trip experience to Iguazu Falls. Communication with Lucia through the entire process was excellent, and each and every aspect of the adventure was better than we could have imagined. Everything was perfectly aligned and delivered without a hitch. We were a bit nervous about our driver getting us to the airport on time from the cruise port. We were originally scheduled to disembark at 7am, but we actually got off at 6:15 and right there was our driver!! And every other transport was equally as excellent. We loved our private Falls guide, Elisangela, who went the distance to ensure we had a truly wonderful experience. We are so so glad we decided to do both sides, and to spend the night in Iguazu. The Falls are beyond comprehension, and no pictures do them justice. Loved trekking around the area where every bend brought new amazing vistas and sounds. Yes, Devil's Throat is closed and will be for awhile, but that in no way detracted from our experience. Stayed at the Grand Panorama Hotel. Very lovely place only 3-minute walk from the main area with shops, restaurants, etc. Very convenient for getting out and about. We also appreciated the options for additional things to do in the area. We selected the Argentinian Dining Experience and the Bird Park in Brazil. The dining experience is something not to be missed! We had so much fun with the other guests and the two instructors/chefs/mixologists. Best filet mignon ever eaten, and that's saying a lot because we are Michelin star foodies! It was a memorable evening that we will be talking about for a long time to come!! And we enjoyed our time seeing some of the many birds of South America. Great conservation facility where the birds are well-taken care of and safe. Everything about our trip was top-notch! Couldn't recommend a better group of people to work with.

We planned to just venture through the park on our own but decided to book a tour instead. So happy we did. Pete, our guide, was a wealth of knowledge and so passionate about this unique habitat. It was also very convenient and professional. Rather than just "look" at the Everglades, I felt like we got to "experience " the Everglades. Book with confidence.

Outstanding day with Ben! He was loaded with knowledge for the entire day. Alligators, birds, Ecosystems, Ben even had a bird checklist of 70 different varieties, We found 28 of those on the list.

We took this tour on our honeymoon, and it was one of our more memorable experiences! The tour guide was absolutely the best there is. We visited so many wonderful locations you would never know were there unless you lived here. My wife and I learned a lot. We're really glad we took this trip, and highly recommend it for anyone else who enjoys nature.

Geography of Zimbabwe

Top places to visit in zambia, the best time to visit canary islands, best time to visit madagascar, the best time to take an african river cruise.

  • Expect the unexpected! No two safaris are the same, and that’s part of the adventure. Your guides are experts at tracking the animals in every area, but which animals you see, when, and what they’re up to is as wild as the savanna itself. You might come across lions enjoying a zebra carcass or antelope galloping across the plains. It’s even possible that your best shot at seeing these animals is right around your camp or lodge.
  • What’s a game drive? A safari game drive is when you go out in a vehicle in search of the animals in their most natural habitat. The vehicles are often 4x4 drive open-air vehicles and get as close as safely possible to the animals so that you can see them in all their wild majesty.
  • Game drives are not off-roading adventures – In order to preserve the habitats, the game drives stick to the established trails and routes rather than just crossing the plains at random, but these trails were established by the experts to maximize the opportunities to see wildlife on your game drive. These drives tend to be leisurely, allowing the best chance to take in the surrounding environment and hopefully spot some amazing wildlife.
  • Game drives generally take place in the cool morning or late afternoon – remember, the best way to see the animals of the safari in action is to follow their behavior, and they tend to be most active when the sun isn’t as high in the sky.
  • The length of a game drive is generally around 3 or 4 hours , but this varies based on what your guide feels is the best way to track the animals.
  • Alternatives to game drives on a safari vacation might include an aerial tour in a hot air balloon, mountain biking and horseback riding, hikes, a river cruise to see the animals via the water, or a nighttime game drive that shows off the nocturnal wildlife of Africa.
  • The atmosphere of a safari vacation is relaxed but immersive . Imagine being literally inside your favorite Animal Planet documentary. Your itinerary won’t be jam-packed with things to do, but the marvels of simply looking out your window to a giraffe grazing in a nearby tree or seeing an elephant passing casually by the lodge is an unforgettable experience.
  • The safari experience changes based on the season – in each region, the dry and wet seasons bring with them different wildlife behaviors and habits and even migrations, so if there is an animal you know you want to see, let us know so we can recommend the best time to travel.
  • Safari vacations usually combine multiple wildlife reserves , from national parks to private game concessions. Getting from one camp to the next might include a long drive through the plains or a scenic flight on an 8-passenger propeller plane.

  • While you are in major cities, you will likely have access to ATMs that work with most major international credit cards (local bank cards will probably not work). You should expect a marginal international transaction fee.
  • Cash can be used for anything you’ll need while on the safari itself, especially in the bush.
  • You can exchange your money most easily at the international airports upon arrival or at a bank with presentation of your passport if necessary.
  • Avoid paying with travelers checks. These are not accepted in most places, so it’s safer to just stick with your card.

What people are saying about our experience

Dingle Sea Safari was an awesome experience. We went a little too early in the season to experience a ton of wildlife, but Captain Colm made sure to give us a great showing of the puffin, seals, and other wildlife that were around. The sights and seas alone were enough to make it a great adventure. And Colm’s sharing of history and geology of the area were a great addition. Colm made operating his boat look like a piece of cake in the seemingly intense North Atlantic. 10/10 would recommend

This tour is excellent. The staff and skipper were extremely helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. The boat was brand new and very comfortable. We were provided with additional clothing that kept us warm and dry (even when it rained). We saw loads of wildlife including seals, dolphins and puffins, with lots of time to take in the beautiful scenery all along the coast as far as the Blasket Islands. I would absolutely recommend this to other travellers. Worth every cent!

Did a sea safari on Easter Sunday. A day out well worth doing. There was lots to see for families and couples. Really enjoyed the wildlife. We saw seals, puffins and mink whales. The boat was fast and exciting but comfortable. The skipper was great and had loads of facts and figures along with funny stories. This is a must do if you are visiting Dingle.

Incredible tour on Sunday with Dingle Safari. The tour takes you along the rugged coastline around Dingle Bay and around the Blasket islands. We got to see seals, puffins, red deer, and a Minke Whale calf. Colum’s knowledge and passion for the environment and love the area made the trip so memorable.

Our experience on Dingle Sea Safari was so much fun!! The boat ride was exhilarating, the scenery we saw close up was magnificent, and our captain Sean was wonderful — knowledgeable, full of facts and stories, and committed to making sure we avoided the weather and had the best experience possible. We saw lots of wildlife, including many many curious seals and puffins. They provided warm wet weather gear which was very welcome and helpful. Would do this again in a heartbeat.

5 of the Best African Boat Tours and Safaris

safari boat ride

The African continent is home to some of the mightiest waterways on Earth, including the Nile , the Congo and the Zambezi rivers. There are also several Great Lakes, while the coastal archipelagoes are as beautiful as they are diverse. Exploring by boat is a wonderful way to experience these waterbodies and the magnificent scenery that surrounds them, with the benefit of avoiding travel on hot and dusty roads. In this article, we look at five of the best African boat cruises and safaris, ranging from luxury Nile charters to budget-conscious ferry trips across Lake Malawi .

Zambezi Queen, Chobe River

Hop on board luxurious houseboat the  Zambezi Queen  for an unforgettable water safari along the Chobe River. The Chobe marks the border between Namibia and Botswana , and supports an incredible variety of animal and birdlife. Each of the boat's 14 air-conditioned cabins features its own private balcony, from which you can watch elephants drinking at the river's edge, or multi-colored birds nesting in the banks. There's a swimming pool on the upper deck for cooling off after a busy day, and a restaurant that serves gourmet cuisine. The cruise lasts two or three nights depending on your itinerary, and explores approximately 25 kilometers of the river. Game-viewing, birding and fishing are all part of the experience.

Dhow Safari, Quirimbas Archipelago

Head to the Quirimbas Archipelago in northern  Mozambique  for postcard-perfect white sand beaches, swaying palms and turquoise waters. One of the best ways to experience the archipelago is on an island-hopping safari from Ibo Island Lodge . Your mode of transport is a traditional Arabic dhow, motorized for added reliability as you travel in between deserted sand banks and paradise islands. At each stop, you'll have the chance to go kayaking, snorkeling or scuba diving on crystal clear reefs populated by shoals of colorful tropical fish. In the evening, the dhow's professional crew will set up camp for you on one of the uninhabited islands, where you'll dine on fresh seafood cooked over the fire and revel in the splendor of the star-filled night sky.

Bou El Mogdad, Senegal River

The Senegal River forms the border between  Senegal  and Mauritania and for half a century the Bou El Mogdad has steadily sailed these waters. Four times a month this lovely old-fashioned ferry plies its route between Saint Louis, the old capital of French West Africa, and Podor on the edge of the Sahara Desert. There are two departures from Saint Louis, and two from Podor. Wherever you embark, the six-day cruise takes you past old French forts; Tukolor, Wolof and Maure villages; and the amazing  Parc d'Oiseaux de Djoudj , filled with birdlife. In between, soak up Senegal's scenic landscapes and the history of the boat itself. This is not a luxury cruise, but the vessel is comfortable with 28 cabins and two restaurants.

Royal Cleopatra, River Nile

There are hundreds of different Nile cruises to choose from, but for those that have the budget, a journey aboard the Royal Cleopatra is a worthy choice. The vessel is a traditional sailboat, or dahabia, handsomely outfitted to evoke the grandeur of the Victorian era. With berths for just seven tourists, it offers a more intimate experience than many of the larger Nile cruise ships; yet still stops at the same world-famous sights. The six-day itinerary takes you to Luxor , Edfu, Esna, Aswan and Kom Ombo , where a professional Egyptologist acts as your guide. In between stops, spend time sunbathing on deck beneath the dahabia's magnificent twin sails, or savoring authentic Egyptian cuisine. You can book a single cabin, or hire the entire vessel.

MV Ilala, Lake Malawi

As the third-largest of Africa's Great Lakes, Lake Malawi, in the Malawi area, is a popular destination for watersports, fishing and relaxing at the beach. The MV Ilala is a local icon, providing a ferry service that traverses the length of the lake once a week, stopping at various points along the way. You can disembark anywhere you like, including the lovely Likoma Island; or ride the ferry all the way back to its starting point at Monkey Bay. A 620-ton vessel with space for 450 passengers, the MV Ilala is not a luxury cruiser. However, it does offer the classic African adventure. There are several restaurants and bars onboard, and you can opt to travel economy, second class, first-class or cabin class. The five cabins include exclusive access to the ship's top deck.

A Safari River Float in La Fortuna/Arenal

  • Jenn and Matt

Last Updated: April 29, 2024

A unique way to see some of Costa Rica’s best wildlife is on a river float tour. Many animals are attracted to water sources. Gently coasting down the river lets you sneak up on them in their natural habitat. In this post, we’ll tell you all about a fun safari river float trip we took in La Fortuna near Arenal Volcano. It goes down a long section of the Penas Blancas River. We’ll also share how you can plan an excursion like this for yourself.

Scenery, River Float Tour Arenal

We did this tour while staying near downtown La Fortuna in Costa Rica’s Northern Highlands. This area is famous for the cone-shaped Arenal Volcano, but also has many other activities like hiking, hanging bridges , adventure tours, and even cultural tours.

La Fortuna is about 2.5 hours from both of Costa Rica’s international airports, SJO near San Jose and LIR in Liberia.

For the river float tour, we headed east from La Fortuna. It was just a short drive (about 30 minutes) to a river called the Penas Blancas.

This river flows north, merging with the Fortuna River, and its waters eventually flow into Nicaragua.

The safari float tour travels along 5.6 miles (9 km) of the Penas Blancas River and just a half mile (about one km) of the Fortuna River.

Setting Off

On the ride to the river put in, we passed large agricultural fields of pineapple, papaya, and yucca. Our guide, Fauricio, told us some cool facts about each crop.

After a little time to use the restroom and get on our life jackets, it was time to push off the rocks and head down the river.

Pushing off, river float tour La Fortuna

With a short safety talk from Fauricio, we felt at ease about our responsibilities. We would be on a large inflatable raft, with the guide leading the way. We would be asked to paddle occasionally, but mostly we could enjoy the ride along the calm, yet swift, river.

Our raft and paddles were the same type used in more extreme whitewater rafting tours. Although we wouldn’t be getting jolted around on this river, we still put some of our belongings in the company’s dry bags, just in case.

Tip: There are definitely some things you’ll want to bring on this tour to make yourself more comfortable. See our list at the end of this post.

The Beautiful Penas Blancas River

Setting off from the bank, the first thing you’ll notice during the safari float are the beautiful surrounds.

The Penas Blancas River has many lofty trees hanging over the water. The thick canopy filters the sunlight and creates almost a tunnel of jungle around you. There are birds calling in the trees, and smaller streams trickling into the larger river.

Tall trees and thick rainforest, river float tour

The size of the river varies, but overall is about 40-60 feet (12-18 meters) wide. Our guide, Fauricio, also told us that it can be anywhere from five to 25 feet (1.5-7.6 meters) deep, depending on water levels. With more rain, the river runs faster, but is still not very rough. This makes is a great spot for a gentle float tour.

What You’ll See

As we floated down the water, Fauricio pointed out different things. Many were easy to spot like ducks, kingfishers, and iguanas. But he had a great eye for some harder to spot things as well.

At one point, he asked us to paddle backwards and slow the boat to a stop. Then he said, “Look right above you.”

We had to squint to understand what we were looking at. But sure enough, on the underside of a branch, was a family of small bats. They were very camouflaged, blending into the brown background almost perfectly. Fauricio explained that these were long-nosed bats and that they are important for the ecosystem because they eat a lot of mosquitoes!

Long nosed bats river float tour La Fortuna

In addition to wildlife, we learned about the surrounding environment. Fauricio told us about many of the tree species along the river, including the balsa and rubber. We also learned about some interesting plants like the broad-leafed tabacon and various types of banana.

Wildlife Highlights

Although it was really interesting to learn about the plants, local weather patterns, and indigenous groups of Costa Rica, most people take the safari float trip for the wildlife viewing. And for this, it did not disappoint.

Sloth seen on river float tour

Some highlights were seeing several families of howler monkeys, a mother sloth and her baby really close up (picture above), and crocodiles on four different occasions.

Howler monkey on Penas Blancas River

One crocodile was at least eight feet (2.4 meters) long, while the rest were smaller. Our son (five-years old at the time) was very happy to see these and even happier that they were shy and scared of us.

Crocodile river float tour Penas Blancas River

Interesting birds we saw included the Anhinga, Amazon Kingfisher, Green Kingfisher, Whistling Ducks, Buff-rumped Warbler, and many Mangrove Swallows.

Agricultural Demonstrations

After a couple of hours on the Penas Blancas River, we drifted into the Fortuna River. At this point, the river was wider and had less of a canopy, but was still very similar.

Shortly after, we came to the spot where we’d get off the boat.

Here, we climbed a set of steps to find a small farm and outdoor dining room. Once Faurico and the driver hauled up the raft, he joined us again to teach us about some traditional crops.

The first thing we learned was how to juice raw sugar cane using an old-fashioned hand-crank press.

Our son had a great time turning the handle as we all watched the sugary water pour out. We then got to taste it. The adults in the group tried it along with some guaro, a local spirit made from sugar cane.

Fauricio taught us a traditional drinking chant, in Spanish, as a way to say cheers!

Next, we were shown some cacao plants growing in the yard. Fauricio took one of the strange looking pods off the small tree and briefly explained how chocolate is made from the seeds.

We then got to grind some of the dried cacao and mix it into a traditional drink. This drink was reserved for only the most important indigenous leaders at one time.

Traditional Snack

Finally, we got to sit down for a traditional snack of handmade tortillas, cheese, and roasted plantains. These tasted great after building up an appetite on the river. We also enjoyed some local coffee and fruit juice.

One of the highlights of the snack was the fact that the chickens, ducks, and turkeys in the yard apparently love the plantain skins. Our son Sam had the time of his life flinging scraps to them on the other side of the fence.

River float tour things to do kids

Minimum Age

Children need to be at least 3-years old.

If you have children younger than 3, we recommend the Cano Negro boat tour . This is on a larger, sturdy pontoon boat.

What to Bring

It can be sunny along the river. We recommend bringing a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, camera, sandals or sneakers, and quick-dry clothing. Binoculars also would be handy to see high up in the canopy, especially if you’re interesting in bird watching.

You don’t need a bathing suit since you won’t be swimming.

Our biggest question was if it was okay to bring our large (expensive) SLR camera. It turns out it was completely fine; we just made sure to keep it strapped around our neck the whole time. We also used our cell phone to take pictures and videos.

We have been to La Fortuna many times during our years living in Costa Rica, and the safari float tour along the Penas Blancas River was one of our family’s all-time favorite activities. Not only is it a great way to see some amazing wildlife, but the boat ride along the river is fun and not stressful at all. If you are planning activities in La Fortuna, we would highly recommend it.
