Our Destinations
Embarking on a Cambodia river cruise presents a unique opportunity to explore the rich tapestry of Southeast Asia's history, culture, and breathtaking landscapes. With the guidance of Cruise Genie's Cambodia river cruises specialists, who boast an average of 25 years in curating exceptional river cruising experiences, guests are assured not only of a journey filled with discovery and luxury but also the comfort of award-winning service that has been recognized for its excellence and commitment to providing unforgettable adventures. Here are some of the captivating destinations you can expect to visit on your cruise, each offering its own unique allure:
- Phnom Penh: The vibrant capital city of Cambodia, Phnom Penh, sits at the confluence of the Mekong and Tonlé Sap rivers. It's a dynamic city that blends traditional Khmer and French colonial architecture, offering visitors a chance to explore its rich history through landmarks such as the Royal Palace, the Silver Pagoda, and the National Museum. The city also serves as a poignant reminder of Cambodia's recent past at the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields.
- Siem Reap & Angkor Wat: Siem Reap, the gateway to the ancient world of the Angkor region, is home to the magnificent Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument in the world. This temple complex is a symbol of Cambodia and a source of national pride. Beyond Angkor Wat, the area is dotted with hundreds of other temple ruins, including Bayon, Ta Prohm, and Angkor Thom, the last capital of the Khmer empire.
- Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City): While technically in Vietnam, many Cambodia river cruises extend into the Mekong Delta, reaching Saigon, known officially as Ho Chi Minh City. This bustling metropolis combines modern skyscrapers with ancient temples and bustling markets, offering visitors a chance to experience Vietnam's economic hub's dynamic energy and rich cultural heritage.
- Kampong Cham: This less-traveled destination provides an authentic glimpse into rural Cambodian life. It's known for its serene landscapes, rubber plantations, and the ancient temple of Wat Nokor. Kampong Cham offers a peaceful retreat and insight into Cambodia's heartland's traditions and history.
- Angkor Ban: One of the few villages in Cambodia that remained untouched during the Khmer Rouge regime, Angkor Ban is a window into traditional Cambodian village life. Here, visitors can experience the warmth and hospitality of the local people and see traditional Khmer houses, some of which are over a century old.

RIVER CRUISING IS HOT!!!
The cruise industry's greatest success story in the past two decades has been the surge in growth and popularity of river cruises. With an ever increasing number of new river cruise lines and river boats introduced, and river cruise companies adding new itineraries to more destinations, coupled with the ever expanding interest in river cruises by the traditional ocean cruising population looking for something new, many more lucky travelers are able to enjoy the more intimate, immersive and attentive experience that river cruises bring to the world!
River cruising is a type of travel that involves navigating a river on a small, often luxurious, ship. Unlike ocean cruises, river cruises take passengers on journeys through inland waterways, such as the Danube, Rhine, Nile, Yangtze, Mekong, and many other rivers around the world. River cruises typically offer a more intimate and relaxed experience than ocean cruises, with smaller ships and fewer passengers. The itineraries often focus on exploring smaller towns and cities along the river, allowing passengers to get a closer look at the local culture and history. This can include visits to historical landmarks, museums, and cultural sites, as well as opportunities to sample local food and wine. River cruises often include a variety of amenities and services, such as fine dining, entertainment, educational lectures, and excursions. Some river cruises are all-inclusive, while others offer optional add-ons for certain activities or services. River cruising has become a popular way to explore Europe, Asia, and other regions of the world, with many cruise lines offering a wide variety of itineraries and ship sizes to suit different preferences and budgets.
With so many River Cruise Companies vying for this ever increasing number of passengers, each claiming to be the best option in the Budget, First Class or Deluxe categories, it has becomes quite difficult for travelers to know which is the best River Cruise Company, River Boat, Destination or Itinerary for them! Without years of experience and the knowledge and access to information that those years bring, consumers run the risk of paying more than they need to, or getting less than they expected to!
That is where we come in! RiverCruiseLines.com, a service of Smart Traveler and MisterCruise.com, puts you in touch with the best cruise counselors for your lifestyle and budget - and our service is FREE.
In fact, we guarantee that, at the time of your river cruise reservation, you will never pay more than if you booked it yourself directly! In addition to absolutely NOT paying more using our services, for over 80% of our reservations, our customers pay less, sometimes much less, than if they booked it themselves!
So, please, look around, get some ideas, and whenever you feel ready for some assistance, simply fill out the River Cruise Quote Request Form. You will enjoy exceptional value when you book your discount river cruises and discount luxury cruises with RiverCruiseLines.com. A cruise along the mystical Mekong is the perfect way to explore some of Cambodia’s rich history, from the time of the Khmer Empire through to the country’s French colonial period, with a chance to soak up a little of the traditional lifestyle along the way. On a Cambodia river cruise, you’ll be able to explore the country’s rich capital Phnom Penh for yourself and have the opportunity to see its greatest architectural and historic treasure , the incredible Angkor Wat temple complex. Stops at smaller river ports along your journey will give you a taste of traditional Cambodian life, from seeing local artisans at work to taking a scenic boat ride.

Ports along the Mekong
Siem reap and angkor wat .
Though Siem Reap isn’t situated on the banks of the Mekong , it does lie on the shores of Tonie Sap Lake which meets the river and serves as a popular starting point for many Cambodian river cruises. It’s not uncommon to spend a number of days in the city because as well as having its own appeal, it’s a convenient base from which to explore further afield. The biggest attraction for river cruisers staying in Siem Reap is the Angkor Archaeological Park, which is home to the magnificent Angkor Wat. This utterly enthralling UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the world’s largest religious monuments, shares both Hindu and Buddhist history and dates back to the time of the Khmer Empire.
Kampong Cham
Relatively unassuming compared to Cambodia’s larger cities, Kampong Cham is the destination from which many Cambodia river cruises actually set sail. It’s quite the hub for the regional agricultural and fishing trade and during your time in the city, it’s possible you’ll have the option to visit one of the outlying villages to see locals at work. In Kampong Cham, the serene hilltop temple of Wat Hanchey is a key tourist attraction and predates even Angkor. The French Tower meanwhile, is a landmark which acts as the perfect introduction to the city’s colonial heritage.
Phnom Penh
Cambodia’s capital is a fantastic city to experience and it’s indeed fortunate that it sits on the banks of the Mekong . All Cambodia river cruises stop here and there’s certainly plenty to see. One of the most popular attractions is the 19th century Royal Palace, which combines the country’s cultural legacies perfectly, having been built in the Khmer style by the French . Another key excursion in the city is a sobering yet educational visit to the Killing Fields – the execution grounds of the Khmer Rouge and Tuol Sleng, their former detention centre which is now an informative and moving museum.
See Local Life
Whether travelling along the Mekong or taking a day trip out from one of Cambodia’s larger cities, your river cruise line will offer a number of excursions on which you’ll be able to immerse yourself in Cambodian culture. It could be a trip to a local English language school, a Rickshaw ride or an outing to a traditional silk-weaving village. Whichever itinerary you choose, your Cambodian river voyage will offer you the opportunity to get a taste of local life.
Cambodia River Cruise Travel Tips
You’ll need a valid visa to visit Cambodia.
The currency is the Riel.
The Khmer language is widely spoken, though if you have some French you may find it useful, as many older citizens and some state institutions still use it.
The growth of tourism means English is now also increasingly used.

On its walkable riverfront, lined with parks, restaurants and bars, are the ornate Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda and the National Museum, displaying artifacts from around the country. At the city’s heart is the massive, art deco Central Market.

Siem Reap, in the northwest Cambodia, is a major tourist hub in the country. Once the seat of power for the Khmer Empire, the name of the city translates to Siamese defeated - a reference to the victory of the Khmer Empire over the army of the Thai kingdom in the 17th century. Siem Reap is the closest city to the world famous temples of Angkor, and its provincial capital sits on the shores of the Tonle Sap lake, making it the most popular tourist destination for those exploring Cambodia.
Sihanoukville is the premier beach destination in Cambodia for tourists and Cambodians alike, with golden white sands, tropical islands and mangrove jungles. A relatively new city, it sprang to life in 1955 with the construction of the only deep-sea port of a newly independent Cambodia. With the bay of Thailand surrounding it on three sides, Sihanoukville was named in honour of the former King Norodom Sihanouk in 1964. As Cambodia descended into civil war the town fell on hard times with the Khmer Rouge using the famous Independence Hotel for target practice. In 1993 peace returned to Cambodia and since then Sihanoukville has been slowly rebuilding itself. Today it attracts Asian Individual travellers, young students and back-packers but after decades of war and upheaval the town’s infrastructure is still very much in its infancy. A visit to Ream National Park offers pristine mangrove forests rich in wildlife with miles of beaches unmarked by footprints.
Kampong Cham, the capital city of Cambodia's Kampong Cham Province, is a vibrant cultural destination with a rich history and serene landscapes. Situated along the banks of the Mekong river, visitors to Kampong Cham can explore the nearby Wat Nokor temple and immerse themselves into local life and culture.
Tonlé Sap, located in the north west of Cambodia, is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and is renowned for its floating villages and diverse ecosystem. As the lake undergoes the fascinating phenomenon of changing with the seasons, it has a profound influence on the livelihoods of those populating the local communities, and offers a fascinating look into the symbiotic relationship between nature and human life in this culturally rich region.
Angkor, in the northwest of Cambodia, hosts the impressive Angkor Archaeological Park - a UNESCO World Heritage site. Best known for its magnificent temples, Angkor was once the capital of the Khmer Empire, from the 9th to 15th centuries, and stands today as a testament to the country's enduring rich cultural and architectural legacy.

Getting there
Explore aqua mekong.
Charting a luxurious passage on Southeast Asia’s longest river across Cambodia and Vietnam, the Aqua Mekong showcases award-winning modern design with comprehensive amenities such as a spa, gym, and river-facing plunge pool.
Choose your itinerary
Aqua Mekong offers guests the opportunity to embark on the finest river ship experience in Cambodia and Vietnam, with the choice of the following itineraries.
What our guests say
Khmer Aspara Dance
Originating from Hinduism, the word "Apsara" means "water nymph" or "fairies". A legend tells of a story where such otherworldly beings descended from the heavens to charm royalty and deities with their graceful dances. Over time, the dance evolved to be more Khmer-styled, rather than Hindu-inspired, detailed in the sculptures in Angkor Wat. Knowledge of this ancient dance eventually faded from memory, until Queen Sisowath took on the passion project of reviving the lost art.
Often referenced to as "Cambodian Ballet", it takes many years of training and strengthening to become adept at this dance. Consisting of 1500 hand gestures, each movement carries a meaning to tell an elaborate story of the Cambodian people.
Floating Villages
A visit to Tonle Sap in the Mekong Delta is only available to travelers during the high-water season of mid-August to November, when the lake is accessible by river boat. It’s home to 170 floating villages which consist of a collection of stilted overwater huts that hover over the water. Guests on Aqua Mekong were introduced to local villagers and their unique way of life in a region where schools, churches, pagodas, and even the karaoke bar and police station all float.
The largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, Tonle Sap nourished a population of more than one million at the height of the Khmer empire in the 12th century. At present, it continues to provide abundance as one of the most productive fishing lakes in the world, supporting over three million people and providing over 75 percent of Cambodia’s annual inland fish catch.
Silk-weaving
No garment is as distinctively Cambodian as the krama. A garment made of cotton or silk, the krama is worn by men, women and children in every social class across the country, with designs from the unassuming to the painstakingly elaborate.
This fascinating fashion item is one of the finest displays of the artistic gifts of the Khmer people (along with silversmithing), and travelers can discover the making of the krama as part of a Mekong river cruise. It also showcases the creativity of the Cambodian people to its fullest, judging by the thousands of ways the garment is deployed in their everyday lives. See if you can spot it being used as a hammock for small children on your next trip to this country.
Silversmith visit
Explore the silversmith villages of Koh Chen — located just 35 kilometers from Phnom Penh, and recognized by the big Buddha statue on its river banks — known for their fine craftsmanship. The intricate craft of silversmithing has been preserved by the local artisans for over 50 years. Keep an eye out for their famous silver bowls, regularly chosen by Cambodia’s king as gifts for visiting dignitaries.
Ceremonial blessing
Visit the floating village of Moat Khla, accessible only by water, and attend a Buddhist blessing ceremony in this isolated community. It's a sacred ritual for cleansing and good luck that dates back to ancient times. Those who wish to be blessed can expect the reading of sacred mantras by the priest, incense burning, offers to deities, and a little (or a lot!) sprinkle of water.
Tuk-tuk ride
Explore the cities through tuk-tuk rides – a local form of three-wheeled transport, which offer one of the most convenient ways of getting around.
Mat-weaving
The village of Binh Thanh is the home of the intricate art of mat-weaving using natural materials, a skill passed down over the centuries. Thanks to improved materials and techniques over the years, the weavers of this town can create artisanal mats not found anywhere else.
Temple visits
No trip to the Mekong would be complete without wandering through hundreds of awe-inspiring temples, including the preserved temples in the lost city of Angkor Wat. The largest religious structure in the world, this is the heart and soul of Cambodia, showcasing over a thousand Hindu and Buddhist temples, ranging from intricate Apsaras, hand carved into the sandstone walls, to serene and smiling stone faces of Buddha and still-intact temples wrapped in thick tree roots.
Weather & Climate
Temperatures
Temperatures in Cambodia and Vietnam generally fluctuate between 26°C (78°F) and 32°C (86°F).
In the warmest month of March, this figure may climb as high as 38°C (100°F). Sailing is an ideal way to discover this region as the Mekong’s waters flow from the icy Tibetan Plateau and the cool Laotian highlands, which takes the edge off the equatorial swelter and offers a comfortable experience.
The Aqua Mekong brings temperatures down further with state-of-the-art central cooling and an award-winning design that maximizes ventilation. Grab an icy cocktail and take a dip in the plunge pool at the ship’s bow any time of day.
Rainfall in the lower Mekong basin peaks during August to October each year. Even during the wettest times of the year, rain comes in the form of brief showers typically lasting 30 minutes to an hour, thanks to Mekong’s inland position and savannah-like climate. Itineraries and excursions are usually unaffected by these brief showers, which help cool off the tropical countryside. Gray skies tend to disappear towards the evening, setting the stage for Mekong’s iconic multicolour sunsets.
With a monsoon lasting five to six months starting May, the already-beautiful Mekong countryside turns into endless fields of vibrant green during these months. Enjoy cycling through these paddy fields on our Mekong delta tour.
High Water Season
The high water season in Cambodia and Vietnam lasts from Mid-August to November. This refers to the time when the Mekong’s water levels rise courtesy of increased flows from the Tibetan highlands and China.
During the high water season, the Tonle Sap lake becomes accessible to river cruise ships. Guests who travel on our Mekong river boat cruise during this period can visit floating villages and the Prek Toal Bird Reserve. Ships can also dock on the shores of the lake, just 45-minutes away from Siem Reap.
Naturally, the high-water season coincides with the monsoon, with August to October being the wettest times of the year. The countryside shows off its richest colors during these months as the hills and rice paddies come to life.
This is also a great time of the year to go on a Mekong delta cruise to sample the local produce such as mangoes and dragon fruits which are sold at floating markets.
Low Water Season
The eight-month low water season from December through to mid-August sees a lower water level in the Mekong and reduced flows. This period offers an opportunity to see a quieter side of local life on the Tonle Sap.
From December to February, the Mekong experiences some of its coolest weather with minimal rainfall. It’s an ideal time to enjoy a wide range of activities including biking, kayaking, and on-shore cultural excursions.
February onwards, the temperatures begin to climb, however the humidity remains low, making it an ideal time for those who want a taste of the tropical warmth. These months see fewer tourists, allowing the opportunity to discover popular attractions free of crowds, in addition to Aqua Expeditions’ signature off-the-beaten-path excursions.
Complimentary flight extension to Siem Reap
During the low water season, Aqua Expeditions offers a complimentary flight extension to Siem Reap as it is not possible to sail the entire way.
This brings us to an important point: Why do other river cruise lines still claim to sail to and from Siem Reap during this period? That’s because the itineraries that do so require guests to endure an unpleasant six-hour road journey from a distant port on the Mekong to Siem Reap.
Aqua Mekong, on the other hand, docks at Phnom Penh and allows guests to take a quick 45-minute flight from the capital to Siem Reap instead.

Welcome to Phnom Penh!
Welcome to Phnom Penh! Located on the banks of the Tonle Sap and Mekong River, Phnom Penh was once known as the “Pearl of Asia”, one of the loveliest French-built cities in Indochina.
Upon your arrival, you will be met by your guide and driven to your hotel. Take the rest of the day easy, have a good rest, enjoy a stroll along the picturesque river promenade and make sure to be ready for your exciting day first thing in the morning!
Touch of History and Khmer Food Exploration
AM: After the Khmer Rouge regime, the city was sadly left a shadow of its former self. Now, due to a strong, young dynamism, the city is once again a vibrant, growing capital. Meet your guide right after breakfast. This morning learn more about the turbulent Khmer Rouge years with visits to Tuol Sleng, a high school turned interrogation prison known as S-21 during the Khmer Rouge era and now a genocide museum; and Cheung Ek, a large memorial commemorating the 17,000 victims who died there under the reign of Khmer Rouge leader, Pol Pot.
PM: For dinner leave all the familiar behind! Zip across the city in a tuk-tuk and discover the best of Cambodian cuisine at four sit-down local restaurants and one craft beer and cocktail bar. Discover Cambodian food throughout history and learn how deep the Khmer cuisine reaches within Southeast Asian culture.
Meals: B, D
Phnom Penh Royal Treasures
After breakfast and check out meet your driver for the transfer to Jayavarman, docked at the nearby pier.
After check-in and settling in, join your co-travelers for an exquisite lunch at the renowned high-end restaurant. Today’s exploration of Phnom Penh takes you to the cultural highlights of the city’s heritage: the Royal Palace with its Silver Pagoda and the National Museum. The day trip ends with a “cyclo” ride along the bustling streets of downtown Phnom Penh and back to the ship.
Evening onboard: lecture about modern Cambodian history, held by our friend and local expert, Mr. Jean-Michel, a professor from the Royal University of Phnom Penh, BBQ dinner on the deck, and a classic Apsara dance performance along with other folklore dances.
Meals: B, L, D
Ox Carts and Water World
We take the Tonle River towards Kampong Tralach, where we take the traditional ox-carts for a ride along the river to the small village and a “Green School” – a project the Heritage Line supports.
Back on board for lunch and an afternoon of sailing to Kampong Chhnang’s “water world”, where everything is balanced on sticks in water-rich soil.
Visit the countryside and villages specializing in traditional Khmer pottery making or extracting Palm juice before returning to the ship for a quiet evening on the river.
Silk Making and Secluded Village
The island of Koh Oknha Tey in the middle of the Mekong is famous for manufacturing high-class silk products. Visit the workshops and learn about this ancient craft, from a tiny silkworm larva to a cocoon, then dyeing, spinning, and weaving the fibers into high-quality Cambodian silk.
Back on Jayavarman, before lunch, our expert guide holds a presentation about the geography of the Mekong River and Tonle Lake along with the unique attributes of the area. Afterward, a monks’ blessing ceremony delivers spirits and wishes for health and prosperity for all.
After lunch the ship sails towards Angkor Ban – a small traditional village of unspoiled Khmer community.
Dinner on board and overnight at the riverbank of Kampong Cham.
Monastery, Monks, and Kids
After a sumptuous breakfast, we leave the ship for the enchanting pre-Angkorian temple of Wat Hanchey (7th century). This small complex sits on a hilltop with breathtaking views over the Mekong. Many young, novice monks live on the compound of Wat Hanchey, and you’ll have the chance to observe some of their daily activities: eating simple meals, praying, studying, or hanging out and making conversation while in their saffron-colored robes.
After lunch on board, we stop at the tranquil monastery of Wat Nokor – the largest of its kind in Kampong Cham Province. Here, we might have the chance to engage in light banter with some of the sociable monks living in the area.
We may be fortunate enough to visit a nearby spectacle only present during the Mekong’s dry months (December to May). The Koh Paen Bamboo Bridge connects the mainland with Koh Paen Island and is re-built by the local community every November when water levels drop.
We cruise further up the Mekong to visit a local school and learn more about the education of the young Cambodian generation. Children from the Organization for Basic Training (OBT) are provided free, supplemental education in English, maths, and the arts, and they are always excited to show their skills in music and dance.
Arrival and Astounding Show in Siem Reap
After breakfast disembark the ship for a transfer by bus to the drop off point in Siem Reap.
Kampong Cham is an important trade and transportation hub. The highway connecting the town and the capital of Phnom Penh is among the best maintained in Cambodia, and the country’s first bridge across the Mekong (Kizuna Bridge) was built here in 2001.
The transfer takes approximately 4.5 hours including rest stop. To keep you entertained during the ride, our expert guides share interesting insights about Cambodia and the region we journey through.
Arrive in Siem Reap in the early afternoon – your local guide will pick you up and escort you to your hotel in Siem Reap. Try a massage at the resort’s spa before evening’s attractions.
Your driver will pick you up in the evening, in time for the fascinating and inspiring Phare Circus Show and dinner.
Phare Circus works mainly with disadvantaged young people. They learn circus skills, theatre performance, music and a range of visual arts. It combines local traditions with new creative and innovative genres. Daring athleticism is combined with stories that speak powerfully to Cambodia’s not-too-distant history.
Angkor Wat and Other Ancient Temples
It’s a full day around the Angkor Archeological Park today. Pack a sunscreen and water before setting out on your exploration.
After breakfast, transfer by private car to Ta Prohm – one of Angkor’s jewels. Overgrown with fig trees, giving a haunting yet exotic atmosphere, is the most photographable. From here drive a short distance to Ta Keo, which would have been one of the finest temples in Angkor had it been completed.
Continue to Angkor Thom – an entire walled city, the royal Capital in the 12th century. With a population of 1 million, it was far bigger than any city in Europe at the time. The amazing centrepiece is Bayon temple crowned with 216 giant, smiling faces of King Jayavarman VII.
Take a lunch break before the exploration of Angkor Wat, claimed to be the largest religious building in the world. The temple, which took 30 years to construct & used the labor of 300,000 workers was built as the earthly representation of the universe with its’ central tower symbolizing Mt Meru – the center of the Universe.
Return to your hotel late afternoon.
Monk Blessing, Temples, and Butterflies
Wake up early and prepare for an ultimately evocative start of your day, journeying deep into the Angkor Complex to a small village community and its monastery with 200 Monks for the ancient tradition of Alms Giving at Sunrise.
Witness the Monks pay respects to their elders before you join the local community in preparing a Monk’s breakfast, as part of the Alms offering. Receive a blessing from the Monks, in this truly South East Asian tradition.
As you are guided around the community, you will hear & feel the vibrations of their morning traditional chanting to finish this exclusive experience before continuing onwards.
Continue to Banteay Srei temple, the only major temple that was not built by a monarch. Constructed in the 10th century it was dedicated to the Hindu god – Shiva. Banteay Srei translates to “Citadel of the Women” and is one of Angkor’s most significant structures as its walls are decorated with elaborate carvings which have been preserved remarkably well.
Next head to the Banteay Srey Butterfly Center, an interactive butterfly farm nestled in a luxurious tropical garden. Morning is the best time of the day to spot as many butterflies as possible. Thousands of free-flying Southeast Asian species will surround you.
In the afternoon take your time to visit the Artisans Center, with local arts and crafts. Ah, also, don’t forget to pack tonight! 😉
Your driver will pick you up from the hotel. If time allows you can stop by at a local restaurant or local galleries for the last minute shopping.
Drive to the airport is approximately 30 minutes.

We are small and intimate. Passengers get a "family-type" feel
As the boats are small, the ships are able to enter smaller parts of the river and enter into places that other ships can't
As the ship are small, they are able to navigate right through the Gao canal and dock at Saigon port, other ships are too big and they stop at My Tho and the passengers need to take a bus to Saigon
The same for Siem Reap, during high water the ship is able to dock at Siem Reap port
As our ships are tastefully made and designed and wooden feel and also authentic, the passengers will not feel that they are "distant" from the village people they are visiting. There is not a huge gulf between the passengers and the local people.
Great for couples, families or friends with 2 private cabins.
