Tour Itinerary

Discover the beautiful sights of the Western Lake District on this adventurous full-day tour. This tour will take you off the beaten track as you discover the magnificent scenery of the Lake District with its beautiful mountains and dramatic lakes. Sit back and enjoy the spectacular scenery of the English Lake District UNESCO World Heritage Site and find out why it was awarded its status in 2017.

From your starting location you will travel through the Lakeland village of Elterwater with the backdrop of the Langdale Pikes behind. Travel through the village once a site for quarrying and gunpowder manufacturing. Today you’ll spot the native Herdwick sheep grazing on the common as you pass through.

As you continue into the breath-taking untouched Langdale Valley where you will be presented with beautiful natural scenery. The valley splits into two, Great Langdale and Little Langdale. The valley is surrounded by the magnificent Langdale pikes, Crinkle Crags and Pike O Blisco. Again you will spot plenty of Herdwick sheep grazing on the farmland; the National Trust has many properties in the valley from historical farms to  the Sticklebarn pub.

As you make your way towards Wrynose Pass you’ll stop off at Blea Tarn, a stunning natural body of water. You’ll start to spot the winding hairpin bending road in front of you, the steepest passes in England and coined “Britain’s two most outrageous roads”.

From Blea Tarn the adventurous roads will really begin as you ascend Wrynose Pass. At the start of the pass, you will be greeted by a sign stating ‘’Extreme caution’’ “Narrow route, severe bends” and ‘’Gradient 1 in 3’’ which is a recipe for dramatic and spectacular views ahead. These signs explain why this tour only operates during the summer months as it’s far too treacherous to travel over when icy or snowing. As you travel through the valley and onto the pass, your driver-guide will be giving you commentary throughout on the history and landscape surrounding you. At the top of the pass, you will spot the Three Shires Stone which marks the historic counties of Cumberland, Lancashire, and Westmorland.

Next up its Hardknott Pass, often described as one of the most difficult roads in Britain. You’ll drive past the extraordinary remains of Hardknott Roman Fort , 1,000 feet up on the fells. Hardknott Fort, known as Mediobogdum by the Romans, was built by the Roman Empire under Hadrian’s rule and forms the Roman road between Ravenglass and Ambleside. On a clear day, views from the pass expanse over the Irish Sea and as far as The Isle of Man which is just over 74 miles away.

Descending the pass, you’ll head into the Eskdale Valley and stop at a traditional country inn where you can purchase lunch if required. Then a ride on the 'la'al ratty' at the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, here you'll enjoy a picturesque journey admiring the coastal views. In the afternoon you will drive onward to “Britain’s Favourite View” at Wastwater, England’s deepest and most dramatic lake. Located in the Wasdale Valley, Wastwater is the deepest of all lakes at 260 feet deep and just 3 miles long. Perhaps one of the most stunning, dramatic, and awe-inspiring lakes in the National Park, Wastwater is framed by England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike along with Red Pike, Kirk Fell and Great Gable.

This classic Lake District tour will end with a scenic journey, making your way back, afterwards you will be dropped back to your starting location with a camera full of fantastic memories and scenery.

Lake District Tours and Itineraries

Explore the lake district by public transport and walking.

There are plenty of ways to experience the joys of the Lake District without a car, including bus, boat, train and walking. This page contains links to different tours and itineraries which explore the best bits of the Lakes, either on foot or by public transport.

The different tours and itineraries are listed below and are split into Lake District towns audio walking tours and Lake District public transport itineraries and adventures . Select your favourite to discover more….

Lake District towns - audio walking tours

lake district tour bus

These self-guided audio walks haven been carefully written and presented, allowing you to discover the highlights of the three main Lake District towns, Bowness-on-Windermere, Ambleside and Keswick. Each town has plenty of attractions, history and stories which these tours will guide you through. Each one starts in the town and ends up at the nearby lake shore. You might be surprised just how much history there is in this area, going back many centuries to medieval times. Even before that, the Romans had a considerable presence here.

The tours are available through the fabulous VoiceMap app which uses GPS to trigger audio exactly when it is needed, so it tells you about an attraction when you get there and describes every turn to ensure you stick to the route. You can do the tour at your own pace and pause it if you want to stop off somewhere along the way. You can download the tour to your mobile device and play it as you walk along, even if there is no phone signal.

The tours are around 1 to 1.5 hours in length, just enough time to discover all the best bits of each town.

The Bowness-on-Windermere and the Ambleside & Waterhead walking tours are now available through the links below. The Keswick walking tour is still in production but will be ready in the near future.

Bus, boat & train itineraries and adventures across the Lake District

lake district tour bus

These itineraries are based on the best transport routes across the area and where possible will allow you to experience the different modes of transport along the way. Buses can go many more places than boats and trains but they often all link up allowing you to experience the special joys of each mode.

Also, to make the most of the scenery and fresh air, itineraries include short walking sections which utilise some of the best easy walks in the Lake District. Walking sections can always be avoided by taking public transport.

Details for a few of the best attractions are included but other attractions along the way are linked and you can decide which ones are most appealing to you. Also included are further details for each transport service plus example schedules and prices. Interactive maps for each itinerary are included on the webpage.

Itineraries are available for download using the links below. They are carefully presented PDF documents that you can save to your device in case of no WiFi or phone signal.

Further itineraries will be added in the future.

The Lake District

England's premier national park.

Picture this. You're children's author Beatrix Potter . Well... maybe not quite yet. For now, you're just Beatrix. A little girl on holiday with her family in the Lake District . Tucked up at the base a bramley apple tree, toes wiggling in the cool blades of grass, you see a dusty rabbit dash a cross the field before you.

Overhead, a Red Kite circles. Your heart spikes. Will that cute little bunny be its next meal?

Now, we're not saying this was the moment that inspired Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit , but it's certainly possible, isn't it? The beauty of the Lake District has inspired many famous writers over the years. We just love Wordsworth's poems, don't you?

But what we care about is your experience. How will the Lake District move you? To words? To tears? Perhaps you're a photographer. Or maybe you love nothing more than staring at trees. Whatever draws you in, the Lake District is one of England's greatest destinations.

Charming Villages

Mysterious Stone Circles
