WAREGEM, Belgium (VN) — Trek-Segafredo’s classics crew know they have to follow the attacks to have any chance of winning Tour of Flanders on Sunday.

Mads Pedersen and Jasper Stuyven are bracing for searing, long-distance surges from the likes of Tadej Pogačar and Mathieu van der Poel .

Stuyven said there’s only thing they can do: “Follow.”

“We know van der Poel, Pogačar, and [Tom] Pidcock, guys we know who are capable to race from far. There is no reason to sit back and try to be tactical,” Stuyven said Friday. “It’s never black or white.

“If you look at 2014 or 2015, people only talked about the last time up the Kwaremont. Now the last few years, there is a big selection on the Koppenberg and people already went there. I think that is already quite far out.”

  • Tour of Flanders sick ward: ‘If you’re not 100 percent, you have no chance’
  • Even without Peter Sagan, TotalEnergies in the classics mix

Speculation of when and where the peloton’s attackers might try to attack to make a move.

“We saw it already that they are not afraid of going a bit earlier. They will keep the same mentality on Sunday. Early doesn’t mean after 100km, but maybe after 160km or 180km,” Pedersen said. “They are not afraid of trying. We just have to follow.”

That is easier said than done.

Trek-Segafredo searching for big ride Sunday

jasper stuyven trek

Stuyven is trying to bounce back from illness that prevented him from defending his crown at Milan-San Remo, while Pedersen won twice early in the season, but has been wildly uneven across the spring’s major dates so far.

Trek-Segafredo will also race without Quinn Simmons, who posted three straight DNF’s after coming down with a cold after Strade Bianche and Tirreno-Adriatico. The American was flying in Italy but struggled to keep pace in the opening Belgian races. He’ll take the weekend off and try to take the start later this month.

With Wout van Aert likely out of the race Sunday, everyone is wondering which team might try to control the race.

“It’s a pity for him, but it doesn’t change our race,” Pedersen said. “I prepared pretty much the other years and I feel the same. Of course, I hope I have a good day, but I cannot tell you now.”

Stuyven said that without van Aert, the race will change, leaving a mix of top teams and favorites wrestling for the victory.

“We don’t know who is making it to the start line and who is not,” Stuyven said. “It’s a mix of teams. Ineos is one of them, we are one of them, you can never rule out Quick-Step. And Jumbo-Visma is still a pretty strong team, even without Wout. Without him, they are a little bit less strong. The day will decide which falls into the right place.”

Trek-Segafredo needs a big ride Sunday. Stuyven, who was fourth at Gent-Wevelgem, said he’s already feeling better.

Both riders are bracing for all scenarios on Sunday, from long-range attacks and reduced bunch sprints. The pair wants to be there, but no matter what happens, Stuyven said there are some things about Flanders that never change.

“To see a ‘mano-a-mano’ with 100km to go, which means before the second time up the Kwaremont, that would surprise,” he said. “I still think we’re in the peloton with a lot of strong riders. Never say never. You cannot not think about that scenario.

“Flanders is such a hard final and the legs will speak,” Stuyven said.

Bike at bedtime: Jasper Stuyven’s Milan-San Remo-winning Trek Madone

Bike at bedtime: Jasper Stuyven’s Milan-San Remo-winning Trek Madone

First Published Mar 28, 2021

Trek-Segafredo’s Jasper Stuyven attacked with 2km to go and successfully managed to hold off the reduced bunch sprint in the closing metres of last weekend's Milan-San Remo classic. The Belgian rider crossed the finish line ahead of sprinting powerhouses Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Soudal) and Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) to take a classy win.

It was fast, it was daring, it was beautiful to watch, and so is the Trek Madone that Stuyven pedalled to victory.

The all-new 800 Series OCLV Carbon frame is Trek’s lightest layup. The material was introduced to the Madone last July after first featuring on the Emonda SLR.

2021 Trek Madone SLR 9 eTap

It contains fibres that are 30% stronger than previous carbon fibres the brand has used and is said to retain the same level of stiffness. The new carbon layup also comes with a claimed 80g weight saving.

Madone’s Kammtail Virtual Foil tube shapes promise super-aerodynamics, while the front end has neatly hidden cable routing with Bontrager’s integrated Aeolus RSL VR-C bar/stem.

The new Top Tube IsoSpeed “is damped to rebound in a smooth and controlled motion providing maximum rider compliance”, according to Trek. It is also adjustable so can be customised to each rider’s preference and for different terrain.

> Review: Trek Madone SLR 9 Disc

Madone uses a T47 threaded bottom bracket standard that Trek says offers “the ultimate in serviceability”. It’s not just a good bike for the pros.

It rolls on the 60mm deep Bontrager Aelous XXX 6.0 wheels that focus on stability for confidence in all conditions. The brand’s Speed Stability Shaping is designed to reduce side forces to allow for a deeper depth and a faster profile without affecting handling while laser-etched graphics are designed to provide a fast, finished look with no added weight.

DT Swiss internals are included for a super smooth ride feel and reliable 36-point star ratchet engagement.

The bike is equipped with SRAM’s Red eTap AXS 12 speed hydraulic disc groupset (and a built-in power meter) while Bontrager supplies the rest of the finishing kit. Interestingly, Trek-Segafredo is only one of two teams running SRAM in the men’s WorldTour peloton, with Movistar being the other.

Check out the bikes the other WorldTour men’s teams are riding here and you can find the women’s here.

Pro bike: Jasper Stuyven's Trek Madone Gen 8

Having been unveiled shortly before the start of the Tour, the new Madone is one of the peloton's most distinctive bikes

Words: Rupert Radley

Photos: James Startt

The 111th Tour de France has been one to forget so far for Lidl-Trek. The bad news of Tao Geoghegan Hart not starting due to illness was further compounded by the abandon of Mads Pedersen ahead of stage eight following his crash on stage five’s bunch finish.

However, Jasper Stuyven has proved himself to be in fine form, almost taking the win on stage nine's electric gravel stage aboard his new Trek Madone. With 10 seconds over the chasing bunch with just 2km to go it looked to be a done deal, and if it hadn’t been for a driving effort by EF Education’s Ben Healy he might have stayed clear.

Jasper Stuyven Trek Madone Gen 8

Stuyven’s new Trek Madone launched just ahead of the Tour de France, making Trek the latest manufacturer (see also: Specialized) to merge its aero and lightweight platforms. The new Trek Madone cannibalises the Trek Émonda, marking the end for an iconic lightweight racing bike.

Jasper Stuyven Trek Madone Gen 8

The eighth generation Madone’s frame tubing is distinct from the outgoing version, with Trek opting for smaller tubing over the bulky kammtail shapes used previously on both the Madone and the Émonda. The new tubing is broader and squatter which Trek says makes it as light as the outgoing Émonda but as aero as the previous generation Madone.

Jasper Stuyven Trek Madone Gen 8

Introduced on the seventh generation Madone, the distinctive IsoFlow (read: aero hole) remains, albeit shrunken in size to reduce weight and improve performance. It has an additional benefit of improving comfort – an 80% increase in vertical compliance, according to Trek – which Stuyven would have valued across stage nine’s lumpy gravel sections.

Jasper Stuyven Trek Madone Gen 8

Other neat features include aero bottles and bottle cages, which Trek claims save 3.7 watts when riding at 45kph. It’s technology typically seen in triathlon racing, although it’s not the first time we’ve seen riders using aero bottles at this tour, with Mark Cavendish also using them when he rode to his record-breaking 35th stage win.

Elsewhere, the aero frame is further complemented by Bontrager’s Aeolus 62mm rims front and rear. These are shod with Pirelli’s P Zero Race TLR RS tyres set up tubeless.

Jasper Stuyven Trek Madone Gen 8

Stuyven is using Trek’s RSL Aero one-piece handlebar and stem with its distinctive negative degree curve. When equipped with SRAM’s new Red AXS hoods it provides quite the lengthy reach.

There’s significant flare on the levers of the SRAM Red groupset, which will make braking easier from the drops.

Jasper Stuyven Trek Madone Gen 8

Also visible is the new ‘Bonus Button’ which Stuyven could use to control his cycling computer or as a sprint shifter when riding in the drops.

Jasper Stuyven Trek Madone Gen 8

Stuyven is pushing a 54/41 chainring on the flat stages, although he is likely to reduce those ratios in the mountains.

The frame is made up in the eye-catching colours of Lidl-Trek, making it an easy spot in the professional peloton.

Lone wolf Van der Poel, plenty of Visma | LaB, and one favorite with possible advantage: Team tactics at the Olympics?

T his coming Saturday, the Olympic road race (men's edition) will take place in Paris. The race will feature a significantly reduced peloton, from 130 riders in the Tokyo 2021 Olympics to just 90 in this edition. This makes the tactical development of the race even more interesting, where even the brand teams shouldn’t be entirely forgotten.

IDLProCycling.com will outline which team has the highest number of (provisional) participants, and Lidl-Trek emerges as the most represented. The German-American team is sending nine riders to Paris and is represented in the selections of major countries like Denmark (Mads Pedersen and Mattias Skjelmose), Belgium (Jasper Stuyven) and the Netherlands (Daan Hoole).

The Danes ignited the race at last year's World Championships in Glasgow, in favor of Pedersen, and will undoubtedly head to Paris with a plan, although it should be noted that their leader sustained a shoulder blade fracture during the Tour de France. Regardless, this road race is a major goal for the 2019 world champion.

He will undoubtedly need some extra help. Interestingly, his entire lead-out team this year, consisting of Latvian Toms Skujins, Luxembourger Alex Kirsch and South African Ryan Gibbons, will be racing solo in Paris. These riders are capable of securing good finishes themselves but can also support their leader if needed. The same applies to Czech rider Mathias Vacek and young Swede Jakob Soderqvist: these Lidl-Trek riders will also be participating, and are both capable of pulling individual results.

Read more below the photo.

Pedersen cannot count on any help from Hoole and Stuyven. "I make that clear," national coach Koos Moerenhout confirmed to IDLProCycling.com . "Daan's role is different. In principle, he is not expected to race the finale. Van der Poel and Van Baarle will have to manage with Pedersen. It’s also a bit political. You have to make smart choices. As a national coach, I haven’t had any problems with that, but it’s also my job to manage those group processes."

For Stuyven, as a Belgian, the same applies, although he himself has a chance to win a medal. He will do so alongside Visma | Lease a Bike riders Wout van Aert and Tiesj Benoot, and Olympic time trial champion Remco Evenepoel of Soudal Quick-Step. That team, along with Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe, has only two riders at the start, but both have a shot at the title.

Visma | Lease a Bike bringing seven guys, Van der Poel representing Alpecin-Deceuninck by himself

Visma | Lease a Bike will have seven riders at the start. Besides Van Aert and Benoot, there's European champion Christophe Laporte from France, Dutchman Dylan van Baarle, Slovenian powerhouse Jan Tratnik, American outsider Matteo Jorgenson, and the only Hungarian in the race, Attila Valter. These men certainly have experience racing against each other, as evidenced by the 2023 European Championships won by Laporte, which was also an edition dominated by Visma riders.

Top favorite Mathieu van der Poel finds himself in a completely different situation. He certainly cannot expect any support from Alpecin-Deceuninck teammates, as he is the only participant for the Roodhooft brothers’ formation in Paris. However, knowing Van der Poel, this won’t bother him one bit.

Other interesting facts? Like Visma | Lease a Bike, UAE-Team Emirates is also bringing seven riders to the start, even after the withdrawal of Tour winner Tadej Pogacar. However, we're talking mostly about outsiders like Swiss rider Marc Hirschi, German Nils Politt, American Brandon McNulty and Spaniard Juan Ayuso.

INEOS Grenadiers (including Jhonatan Narváez, Tom Pidcock, Joshua Tarling and Magnus Sheffield) and Israel-Premier Tech (Michael Woods, Derek Gee and Corbin Strong) each have six riders, while most teams range from two to four participants. And then there is one WorldTour team that will have precisely zero of its riders participating in Paris: dsm-firmenich PostNL.

This overview is based on the top 21 teams from the UCI Ranking.

'I tried everything' - Jasper Stuyven's attack falls short in Tour de France gravel stage

'This was really a big opportunity for me and I was close' says Lidl-Trek rider who was caught within final kilometre of stage 9

TROYES FRANCE JULY 07 Jasper Stuyven of Belgium and Team Lidl Trek competes in the breakaway passing through a gravel strokes sector during the 111th Tour de France 2024 Stage 9 a 199km stage from Troyes to Troyes UCIWT on July 07 2024 in Troyes France Photo by Bernard Papon PoolGetty Images

The most combative rider award that Jasper Stuyven ended up with on stage 9 of the Tour de France clearly wasn’t much of a consolation, the disappointment thick in the Lidl-Trek rider’s voice during his post-stage interviews. That first win at the Tour for a moment had seemed within reach but was snatched from his grasp once again.

Stuyven has made it into the top ten of a Tour de France stage 25 times, four times stepping up to the podium with his best result being a second place on stage 7 in 2021, the year he won Milan-San Remo. That time he was out front with eventual winner Matej Mohorič, but ended up being dropped on Signal d’Uchon, but in this year's gravel-heavy stage, Stuyven was the one who tried to drop all his rivals instead.

Out front with the break, Stuyven cannily waited until a rival's attempted attack was reeled back in before quickly countering at just over 11km to go. He established a small gap despite the scrambling behind to try and prevent the powerful European gravel champion from getting away.

Stuyven entered the final gravel section alone, having established a gap of around ten seconds.

“I tried, I tried everything," said Stuyven. "Maybe it would have been nice to not have such a strong headwind for the last few kilometres, and they didn’t really look enough at each other behind me, but I think I left it all out there."

As Stuyven appeared to fade, the pursuit continued behind, with the small group ultimately catching the 32-year-old, who is riding his eighth Tour de France, just past the flame rouge. Stuyven then had to watch them take off ahead and battle for the victory that had just minutes before looked like it could be his. Anthony Turgis (Total Energies) sprinted to victory ahead of Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) and Derek Gee (Israel-Premier Tech) while Stuyven had to settle for eighth.

"I just wish I could have pushed a little harder towards the end but, it is what it is and unfortunately it wasn’t enough," said Stuyven in a media release from the team, which suffered a blow to its Tour de France plans when the two-time stage winner, Mads Pedersen, did not start stage 8 due the injuries caused by an earlier crash .

When asked, in the post-race interview, if there was at least some satisfaction to be gained from his show of form, Stuyven replied "At the moment, it is hard to see the positives but we will see what happens over the rest of the race.

"I think this was really a big opportunity for me and I was close. Now, I think I will just enjoy the rest day and then I can maybe look to see what’s possible in the next part of the race and if there are any more chances.” Get unlimited access to all of our coverage of the Tour de France - including breaking news and analysis reported by our journalists on the ground from every stage of the race as it happens and more.  Find out more

Jasper Stuyven Renews Through 2022

jasper stuyven trek

Trek-Segafredo is pleased to confirm that Omloop het Nieuwsblad winner Jasper Stuyven has extended his contract through 2022.

Jasper Stuyven signed a two-year extension to his contract and will stay with Trek-Segafredo until the end of 2022. The Classics specialist has been with the team since the launch of Trek Factory Racing in 2014 and is now the longest-serving rider of the team.

After a successful period as a junior, which saw Stuyven win the World Championships and Paris – Roubaix, he stepped up to race with Axel Merckx’s Bontrager-Livestrong development team and has raced on a Trek bike ever since.

The next step was a move to the WorldTour with Trek Factory Racing in 2014. Stuyven spent his early years with the Team learning under the peerless leadership of Fabian Cancellara.

jasper stuyven trek

During that time he helped ‘Spartacus’ to victory at the Tour of Flanders and Strade Bianche, while also bagging a solo win at Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne for himself and a stage of the 2015 Vuelta a España. Over the last few seasons Stuyven has developed into a team leader and one of the peloton’s top one-day riders. His 2017 Classics campaign showcased his potential to be one of the big players with a fourth place at the Queen of the Classics and second at Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne.

Stuyven followed up the next year with an impressively consistent display. The Belgian achieved top-10 finishes in seven of the spring Classics. A big Classics win eluded Stuyven, but he was certainly knocking on the door. Fast-forward to 2020, now in his seventh year with Trek-Segafredo, and Stuyven took his big win in the Opening Weekend at Omloop het Nieuwsblad. This made the Leuven native one of the few riders to have notched a one-day victory before the season was put on hold. Taking the early-season win was a key milestone in the Belgian’s trajectory, and placed him as a favorite for the eagerly awaited continuation of the cobbled campaign.

Stuyven now heads the Trek-Segafredo Classics team alongside World Champion Mads Pedersen, with both riders capable of delivering big wins in the rescheduled ‘autumn’ Classics.

Stuyven is particularly fond of the current Classics group and explained that the atmosphere within the team made him all the more pleased to renew his contract.

“I’m really thrilled to continue racing with Trek-Segafredo because I feel at home in this team. We have a great group of riders and staff and we have a team that is 100% committed to each other. Here, we are not just colleagues but also friends on and off the bike.

“I have known Trek even before the launch of Trek Factory Racing, from back when I was on the development team. It’s nice to be the longest-serving Trek-Segafredo rider; I think that shows that I’m happy and at home, and I feel valued and respected in this team.”

Trek-Segafredo General Manager Luca Guercilena was also pleased to see the relationship continue: “It’s rare to see a rider and a team stay together for so long – it’s seven years now that we have enjoyed with Jasper. We saw his potential from the start, so it’s particularly rewarding to have seen him develop both as a rider and a person. After a difficult spring last year, it’s especially satisfying to see Jasper step up and take a big Classics win already this season. Jasper has the qualities to win the biggest races, and we are confident we will enjoy more success with him when racing resumes.”

Stuyven’s goals for 2020 have not changed due to the interrupted season: success at the Classics and hunting stage wins at the Tour de Francewhile supporting Bauke Mollema and Richie Porte in their GC ambitions.

“I hope to resume this season where we left off and make some great results, especially with the Classics, but I also want to be competitive and chase wins in other big races,” Stuyven concluded.
