How much does an Artic tour in Canada cost?

Prices for Arctic tours in Canada vary depending on length, activities, and season. At TourRadar, prices can begin at USD 2,500 and can go on to exceed USD 17,000.

Where in Canada can I see the Northern Lights?

To see the Northern Lights, you need to go above the Arctic Cricle. Given Canada's size, there are plenty of places to chase the Northern Lights like Yukon, Nunavut and Churchill.

When should I visit Canada to see the Northern Lights?

It's possible to see the Northern Lights during all seasons in Canada. During winter and autumn, the Northwest Territories, Manitoba, and Yukon are the best places to see them. In spring, Yukon is your best bet, and Newfoundland and Labrador is the place to go in summer.

What means of transport are used on tours?

Due to the great distances between some destinations along the tour, you might find yourself on a charter flight. As some places are only accessible by water, you'll also travel by ship, and for off-ship adventures, zodiacs are used. Depending on the tour, you might go on a dogsledding tour or a skimobile safari.

Over 36,000 islands make up the Canadian Archipelago, that area at the top of North America where the land dissolves into the sea.

Canadian Arctic Travel Guide The Polar North of Canada

A vast unpopulated wilderness with spectacular scenery, history, inuit culture and wildlife, 2024 cruise departures, july-sept, 9-30 days.

Information : Arctic travel basics | more travel details | request contact | clothing | boots Regions :   Canada | Greenland | Iceland | Svalbard and Spitsbergen | Antarctica

The Arctic populations

To the north of Canada there is a vast wilderness of lakes and forests, largely empty other than isolated settlements. Beyond the continental mainland is the Canadian Archipelago of islands, most of this is above the Arctic Circle.

The waterways between these islands and deep fjords make a generally calm place to cruise amongst steep cliffs and mountains that stretch to the horizon. Green lowlands and scenic bays add variety. The exact route cruises take depends on the state of the sea-ice which varies constantly. Wilderness, wildlife, centuries of historical exploration and a rich Inuit culture make for fascinating travels.

The Arctic North of Canada is a huge place and those islands add up to a vast area, three of these islands, Baffin, Victoria and Ellesmere are the 5th, 8th and 10th largest islands in the world. Devon Island between Ellesmere and Baffin is the largest uninhabited island in the world.

This wilderness is richly populated by wildlife. there are seals, whales, polar bears, caribou, musk ox, arctic wolves, foxes and hares along with many thousands of seabirds on nesting cliffs.

canadadian arctic travel

This is the region where explorers went from the 15th century onwards to find the "Northwest Passage" a fabled trading route from Europe to the Far East. The most famous expedition being that of British Naval Captain Sir John Franklin in 1845 which resulted in the mysterious disappearance of both his ships, the Erebus and Terror and every member of their crews, leading to rescue attempts that went on for another 33 years.

Norwegian Roald Amundsen was the first to successfully navigate the route in 1903-1906 in a small ship, the Gjoa. The route is frequently blocked by sea-ice which varies in extent and location significantly from year to year, only ice breakers can reliably sail through the whole passage. In recent years climate change has reduced seasonal ice and so the passage is more navigable. It is limited in its usefulness as a shipping route however by shallow regions that prevent passage by modern cargo carriers.

devon island

The Canadian Arctic is accessed by international airports and internal flights, many cruises charter an aircraft to take the passengers deep into the High Arctic where they join their cruise ship, returning to the international airport at the end of the cruise. Visas and other travel document requirements can be checked here .

MMany cruises will sail part of the Northwest Passage, usually the eastern and central regions, it is possible to sail the whole passage as far as Nome in Alaska. You can follow the same route that Franklin took, though thankfully not as he did in 350 ton wooden ships with 20hp engines using primitive, inaccurate charts, navigating by the sun and stars.

There are historic sites to visit along the way. A rich culture of indigenous peoples in the Canadian High Arctic stretches back over 4,500 years, there are modern settlements where you can see traditional performances, arts and crafts and also the archeological remains of hunting lodges thousands of years old.

Many cruises to Arctic Canada also take in Greenland, often starting at one and ending at the other, this gives a good opportunity for a city-break at either end in a place where you may not otherwise go. This could be Ottawa, Copenhagen, Reykjavik or other nearby destination in North America or Europe.

Sights to See and Places to visit in Arctic Canada

Anywhere and Everywhere

ThThe fjords and waterways provide an ever changing scenic experience, as they vary in width, the extent of sea-ice and of the mountains and landscapes that you pass by. Mist, sun and clouds provide another layer of variability and mystery as you cruise onto the next excursion point. One of my favourite memories of such cruising was listening to a talk about glaciers on deck when the speaker turned to his left and pointed out a glacier which illustrated his point and then to another glacier across the other side of the ship that demonstrated the next point he mentioned.

There are many places to take a walk ashore with an endless supply of hills and mountains that anywhere else in the world would have their own name and possibly even myths and local folklore surrounding them. As this is the Arctic, whales, seals and walrus may well put in an appearance at almost any time as might polar bears, while you are not guaranteed to see them, you will be very unlucky if you don't.

canada cruise

Beechey Island

The place where Franklin's lost expedition spent their first winter in 1845-1846, there are the graves of men who died marked by fairly recent headstones and then a little further away the remains of a hut that was built by a rescue mission in case there were any survivors who came back to where they started from. Strewn around are food cans from that winter just lying on the ground still. Some are made into a cross as a memorial, part filled with stones to stop them blowing away. A very bleak and poignant place with remnants from the start of the expedition when all was still hopeful and then from later on when all was lost.

Beechey Island Grave Marker - John Torrington - Terror

Prince Leopold Island

300m cliffs rise vertically from the sea with thousands of nesting black guillemots and if you're lucky a scavenging polar bear or two at the base looking for causalities.

canada cruise

Lancaster Sound

The starting point for explorers looking for the Northwest Passage, some years it would be open and easy to navigate, others it would be clogged with ice. The very earliest ships to come here were sail only and very small by modern standards. Dubious charts and frequent swirling mists made navigation all the more difficult, as you sail by see if you can work out if that's one island you're looking at or two with a navigable channel between them, and if so, does that channel lead somewhere or is it a long fjord with a closed end?

Bylot Island

A medium sized island for hereabouts, but still 11,607 sq. km. To the northeast of Baffin Island separated by a relatively narrow stretch of water, uninhabited though with a seasonal hunting camp, most of the island is within the Sirmiilik National Park. The island has an interior icecap with numerous glaciers flowing down to the coast from it. There are relics from the Thule People and Dorset Culture both of whom were themselves replaced by the ancestors of the modern Inuit. It is home to a former settlement of Royal Canadian Mounted Police at Dundas Harbor where the small cemetery hints at how difficult life must have been here on a number of levels.

canada cruise

A Tununirmiut Inuit community of around 1,300 people on Baffin Island and a regular stopping off point for tourist ships or a good place from which to explore Baffin Island with mountain views in all directions and nearby glaciers, ice caves and other natural features. There is a community center where you may see performances of traditional throat singing and the unusual sports of the Inuit Games demonstrated. A well stocked gift shop with local arts and crafts, you can even purchase a narwhal tusk (if they have one in stock) though may not be legally allowed to import it into your home country. The architecture is utilitarian, it's a place to stand and look out from, Northern Canada has a way to go to catch up with the pretty chocolate box villages of Greenland.

canada cruise

Baffin Island

The fifth largest island in the world (507,451 sq. km., more than twice as large as Great Britain) and home to around 11,000 people more than half of whom live in Iqaluit which is the largest city and the capital of the territory of Nunavut on the south coast of the island. Most of high arctic Canada and the Canadian Archipelago is part of Nunavut. Baffin Island has almost everything that the Arctic has to offer, plentiful wildlife, enormous mountains, fjords, glaciers, sea-ice, modern Inuit culture and an extensive history of occupation by native peoples and visits by explorers. As a child I had a huge atlas that I would pore over for hours, Baffin Island was one of those places that seemed to exemplify adventure and other-worldness, I was sooo excited when I finally got to go there, so maybe I'm biased. If you've read this far however I'm sure you'll like it too.

Tour the city this morning, including the ultra-modern Perlan Museum with its mirrored dome and high-tech Wonders of Iceland exhibit, offering interactive artificial glaciers, ice caves, and volcanoes. See the immense concrete Hallgrímskirkja, the largest church in Iceland. An elevator ride to the top of the 245-foot tower reveals a staggering view over the city, the bay with its puffin-specked islands, and the surrounding mountains. This afternoon, head to the port to embark the Silver Endeavour, your home away from home for the next 16 nights. Be on deck as the ship heads out of Faxaflói Bay and into the Irminger Sea.

Thursday, July 10: At Sea

Spend the day traversing the Denmark Strait, the very same route taken by Erik the Red in the 10 th century. Attend lectures about upcoming stops in Southern Greenland and spend time on deck looking for whales and seabirds.

Friday, July 11: Prince Christian Sound, Greenland

Connecting the Irminger Sea with the Labrador Sea, this 60-mile-long sound offers all of Greenland’s monumental beauty in miniature. Separating the mainland from a southern archipelago, Prince Christian Sound (or Ikerasassuaq, in Greenlandic) isflanked by sharp peaks. You might as well be in the Viking era as you cruise through the narrow fjord, as the only signs of human life are the weather station where the ship enters, and the tiny village of Aappilattoq, home to 100 intrepid souls. Animal life is more abundant, with Minke, Fin, and Blue Whales seen frequently, as well as Ringed and Bearded Seals. Be sure to be out on deck, as it is a spectacle you don’t want to miss, this magnificent introduction to the land of ice, water, and rock that is the Arctic.

Saturday, July 12: Qaqortoq (Julianehåb) / Hvalsey

The largest town in southern Greenland with a population of 3,300, Qaqortoq has been inhabited since prehistoric times. As you approach its harbor, you will see why: Qaqortoq rises steeply over the surrounding fjords, offering panoramic views over the mountains, Lake Tasersuag, and the bay with its aquamarine icebergs. Qaqortoq has evolved into a seaport for fish and shrimp processing, tanning, and fur production. Explore the town on a walk, visiting the churches and museum, and its open-air art exhibition, The Stone & Man Project, which has transformed the town into an outdoor gallery. 12 miles up the Hvalseyjarfjord, Hvalsey is home to the largest Norse archaeological site in Greenland. The “Eastern Settlement” lasted from the 10 th- to the 15 th -century. Tour the well-preserved ruins of the 13 th -century Anglo-Norwegian-style church and farmstead known as Thjodhild’s Stead. The last documented event of the Norse in Greenland was a wedding held in this church in 1408.

Sunday, July 13: Paamiut

Paamiut means “the people who live at the mouth” in Greenlandic, a reference to its location at the mouth of the Kuannersooq Fjord. The history of the community dates back to 1500 BC, but it was in the 18 th century that Paamiut evolved into a major trading hub within Greenland. Seal fur, whale products, and soapstone carving brought prosperity to the colorful town. Today, Paamiut’s draw is its unspoiled landscape and abundant wildlife. In summer, Minke, Fin, and Humpback Whales can be seen from shore. Rare White-tailed Eagles, called Nattoralik, can be spotted, and are believed to bring good luck. Today, walk through the charming town and visit the small museum to learn about local customs, traditions, and Paamiut’s history.

Monday, July 14: Nuuk (Godthab)

Established in 1728, Nuuk (meaning “heartland”) is Greenland’s first town and current capital, housing nearly 30% of the nation’s population. It’s practically cosmopolitan compared to Greenland’s other towns, possessing the country’s only traffic lights, roundabouts, and university. Still, Nuuk exudes great Greenlandic pride and a local charm. Enjoy a walking tour of the town to see Inuit ruins, the home of Nuuk’s missionary founder, Hans Egede, City Hall with its tapestries depicting local history, the cultural house, Katuaq, whose architecture was inspired by the play of the Northern Lights on ice. See the parliament building and the wooden Lutheran Church of our Saviour, whose towering spire provides a noticeable landmark. At the Greenlandic National Museum, learn of their repatriation program to recover thousands of Inuit items taken to Denmark over the centuries. See the famous Qilakitsoq mummies, and an outstanding collection of traditional dresses. You may choose instead to spend the day hiking in the hills above town.

Tuesday, July 15: Maniitsoq / Sermilinnguaq

On the central west coast of Greenland stands its sixth-largest town. Maniitsoq is home to fewer than 2,700 inhabitants but is quite well known for its magnificent carvings and beadwork, integral to the national dress of West-Greenlandic women. The town houses a delightful museum and old cemetery. This afternoon, head north to the narrow, steep-sided Sermilinnguaq Fjord, a preferred halibut fishing area. In 2019, the Greenland Environment Fund cleaned up the derelict fishing gear that had accrued along the fjord, and colonies of Razorbills; Brünnich’s, Common, and Black Guillemots; Glaucous Gulls; and Black-legged Kittiwakes rebounded magnificently. 7,400 acres of Sermilinnguaq have now been deemed an Important Bird Area. Explore the narrow waterway by Zodiac, watching birds flit among the impressive sea cliffs.

Wednesday, July 16: At Sea

Enjoy the onboard lecture series about upcoming Baffin Island, the largest island in Canada and the fifth largest in the world, as you make the roughly 500-mile trip across Baffin Bay. Baffin has been continuously inhabited by Inuit peoples for centuries and has been the subject of Norse and English exploration since pre-Columbian times. Spend time on deck watching for White-beaked Dolphins, Minke Whales, seals, and Walrus. Birders may spot Pomarine Skuas, Little Auks, Brünnich’s Guillemots, Northern Fulmars, and Glaucous Gulls.

Thursday, July 17: Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada

Canada’s newest capital, located at the head of Frobisher Bay in southeastern Baffin Island, was founded in 1942 as an American air base. Today, Iqaluit is Nunavut’s largest and fastest growing community, and is the political and economic hub of the Canadian Arctic. Walk through town and see the many colorful Inuit murals and carvings displayed along the streets. You may opt for a tour of the Nunatta Sunakkutaangit Museum, housed in a former Hudson Bay Company building, with its incredible collection of Inuit artwork and artifacts, including tools, boats, jewelry, and clothing. If time allows, check out the binders full of old photographs upstairs, which offer insight into early Iqaluit. Head to the Nunavut Legislative Assembly Building, with equally remarkable displays of Inuit art. Others may choose to head out for a hike in nearby Sylvia Grinnell Territorial Park. The picturesque park houses ancient Thule ruins and many varieties of wildlife— Caribou and Arctic Fox are common sightings, along with 40 avian species, including Lapland Longspurs, Northern Wheatears, Red-throated Loons, and Gyrfalcons. Look for the rare Woodsia Fern and Purple Mountain Saxifrage, the official flower of Nunavut.

Friday, July 18: Lady Franklin Island / Monumental Island

Early this morning, enter the Davis Strait and embark on a Zodiac exploration of isolated Lady Franklin Island, named for the wife of Sir John Franklin, the 19 th -century Arctic explorer who died trying to discover the Northwest Passage. Lady Franklin is home to striking vertical cliffs of ancient Archean rock, likely some of the oldest stone in Canada. With a bit of luck, it’s possible to see Atlantic Puffins and even a rare Sabine’s Gull. Next, head to nearby Monumental Island. Cruise in Zodiacs around its exposed rocky cliffs, an excellent place to spot Black Guillemots, Gyrfalcons and Northern Gannets. Walrus have been known to haul out here. Look for them, and groups of curious Harp Seals, on the many skerries by the island. There is also a chance to spot a Polar Bear along the shoreline.

Saturday, July 19: Akpatok Island

Akpatok is the largest island in Ungava Bay, separated from Baffin Island by Hudson Strait, near the northernmost limits of the Labrador Peninsula. It is a beautiful sight with sheer limestone cliffs jutting out of icy waters. This uninhabited island lures huge amounts of wildlife, most notably the world’s largest population of breeding Thick-billed Murres, estimated at well over a million birds. The birds flock to the island’s cliffs between June and September where they incubate their single pear-shaped egg on the cliff ledges. Glaucous Gulls and Peregrine Falcons can be seen soaring above looking for unguarded eggs and chicks. Akpatok Island is also often frequented by Polar Bears and Walrus, with the occasional Caribou sighting also reported.

Sunday, July 20: Kimmirut

Kimmirut, formerly named Lake Harbour, is the southernmost community on Baffin Island. Standing on the shores of Hudson Strait, on the aptly-named Meta Incognita Peninsula, Kimmirut has had contact with Europeans since 1000 AD, when Dorset and Norse sailors from Greenland interacted. Contact increased as fur hunters ventured farther north, whalers came to Hudson Strait in search of Bowhead Whales, and Anglican missionaries arrived. In 1911, the first Hudson Bay trading post on Baffin Island was built in Kimmirut. Today, the roughly 400 Kimmirummiutait (Kimmirut residents) preserve a traditional way of life, with a thriving culture of arts and crafts including stone carving, ivory scrimshaw, and jewelry-making using gemstones from the area.

Monday, July 21: Kinngait (Cape Dorset), Dorset Island

Kinngait, named Cape Dorset until 2020, is best known as the “Capital of Inuit Art” for its globally renowned native artists. It is a stark and beautiful hamlet on Dorset Island, off the southern shore of Baffin Island. Take a guided walking tour, exploring the town for its best Inuit art. Stop at the Visitors Center for an overview of the community and its history. Visit the Kenojuak Art Centre for a stone-cut print demonstration. See the incredible Cape Dorset Inuit Art Gallery, with its sculptures and carvings.

Tuesday, July 22: Coats Island

Situated in northern Hudson Bay, 80-mile-long Coats is one of the largest uninhabited islands in the world. It was home to the Sadlermiut Inuit, but around the turn of the 19 th century, contact with western whalers brought disease that virtually wiped them out. Ruins of their homes, in the form of rock circles, are the only evidence of their time here. Coats is peculiar for its lack of Snow Geese and Lemmings. This leaves more vegetation for the birds that are here, including massive colonies of Thick-billed Murres and Glaucous Gulls, which you will see as you cruise the shoreline by Zodiac.  You may also see Polar Bears sniffing around the cliffs for Murre nests, as they have been spotted supplementing their diet with birds as the Arctic climate has warmed.

Wednesday, July 23: At Sea

Spend the day cruising across Hudson Bay and hearing from the lecture team. Out on deck, look for seabirds, dolphins, seals, and migrating whales.

Thursday, July 24: Churchill, Manitoba

Though it may be best known for its Polar Bears, Churchill is home to another wildlife spectacle every summer, when up to 3,000 Beluga Whales gather to feed in the brackish waters of the Churchill River. Choose from several activities today: Take a Zodiac in search of these “canaries of the sea,” so called for their high-pitched squeaks. Then, tour the 18 th -century Prince of Wales Fort standing watch at the mouth of the river. You may opt instead to spend the morning kayaking, and with luck, experience life as “one of the pod,” watching the whales carouse beneath you. Alternately, take a guided tour of the Churchill Northern Studies Center and learn about the research happening there. Or, transfer to the site of the wrecked MV Ithaca , a British steamship built in 1922, for a low-tide hike to explore the wreck up close and learn of its history.

Friday, July 25: Disembark / Churchill / Montreal

This morning, disembark Silver Endeavour and transfer to the airport for a flight to Montreal. Gather with your fellow travelers and expedition leaders over a farewell dinner. Dinner and overnight at Montreal Airport Marriott In-Terminal Hotel .

Saturday, July 26: Montreal / Home

After breakfast, walk to the airport’s departure area to check in for your flights back home.

Quick facts about canadian arctic.

The Canadian High Arctic lies north of mainland Canada, which consists of 94 major islands and 36,469 minor islands with a total of 1.4 million square kilometre. The largest islands are Baffin, Victoria, Ellesmere, Banks and Devon. These islands are separated by large channels from less than 100 meter to about 600 meter deep.

The average annual temperature are as low as −20°C in the north and −6°C in southern Baffin Island. For couple months during the summer, it may rise above freezing. The sea ice cover is complete in winter throughout the archipelago with an average thickness of 1.5 to 2 meter. With recent years' thinner ice cover, passenger ships are now common in late summer to sail through the Northwest Passage.

These High Arctic islands are home to Peary caribou, muskox, Arctic fox, Arctic wolf, lemming and Arctic hare along with 60 species of birds. The surrounding seas are home to the polar bear, the walrus, seal and whale including narwhal and the beluga.

The Inuit and their predecessors have lived in the Canadian High Arctic for the past 4,000 years. The majority of Inuit people continue live in the north including scattered settlements throughout these High Arctic islands.

Canadian Arctic

Embark on an incredible exploration of historic canadian sites, encounter abundant wildlife and experience traditional inuit culture..

Our Canadian Arctic small ship cruises explore the starkly beautiful Arctic archipelago made up of over 35,000 islands encompassing Nunavut and the Northwest Territories. They provide excellent opportunities to observe iconic polar wildlife, view breathtaking coastal scenery and visit remote communities.

Here, the icy seas and desolate tundra are home to surprisingly diverse plant and animal life. Unlike Antarctica , which has no land animals, you’ll find an array of terrestrial species such as Arctic hare, ptarmigan and muskox happily feeding on the abundant berries, heather and moss. If you are lucky, you might even see polar bears , Arctic fox and caribou, so important to the Inuit. The seas abound with amazing marine life – beluga whale, bowhead whale, walrus, the rare narwhal whale, bearded and ringed seals.

This frozen land is also the historical home of around 200,000 Inuit, whose rich, ancient cultures and traditions still survive in settlements scattered across the north. Summer is the only time to visit, with long daylight hours providing plenty of time to explore.

Encounter Abundant High Arctic Wildlife

Watch out for some of earth’s most spectacular wildlife, including large land mammals like polar bear, caribou and muskox.

The Arctic is also home to even larger marine mammals like whales and walrus. Whale species include beluga and bowhead as well as the rare narwhal with its single “unicorn-like” tusk. There are also many species of seal including bearded seals and ring seals. The shores and cliffs abound with seabirds; some itineraries include the incredible sea cliffs at Prince Leopold Island, home to more than 500,000 birds, including kittiwakes, puffins, guillemots, gulls and fulmars.

Visit Traditional Inuit Communities

A journey through the Canadian Arctic offers the opportunity to interact with traditional Inuit communities.

Visit fishing villages and remote settlements to learn about Inuit heritage and culture. The tiny village of Cape Dorset in Nunavut has been called Canada’s “Capital of Inuit Art” and is world famous for Inuit drawing, print making and carving. In the late 1950s, residents pioneered modern Arctic carving and printmaking, marketing it to the world with remarkable success.

Explore Historic Sites Including Beechey Island

Go ashore to visit sites that were significant to early polar explorers including Beechey Island, where Sir John Franlin and his crew spent their last winter before disappearing.

The most famous of these National Historic Sites of Canada is Beechey Island, the site of graves from the tragic expedition of 1854 led by Sir John Franklin in search of the fabled North West Passage. Even today, the search continues for his ships: the HMS Erebus and HMS Terr or. At Fort Ross, you can see an abandoned outpost of the Hudson Bay Trading Company. The charter granted to the Hudson’s Bay Company by King Charles II in 1670 is the foundation of Canada’s claim to its northern territories.

Discover Lancaster Sound, The Wildlife Superhighway

The seas of Lancaster Sound offer some of the best wildlife viewing in the Arctic, its abundant waters supporting healthy populations of seals, whales, walruses and seabirds.

As a result the area is also known as the Serengeti of the Seas. They support huge congregations of narwhal and beluga whale, as well as seals, bowhead whale, walrus and polar bear along with millions of migratory seabirds – gulls, fulmars, geese, kittiwakes and Arctic Terns.

Zodiac Explorations

Expect shore landings and plenty of explorations in Zodiac inflatable boats.

Anyone of average fitness and agility can get into and out of the Zodiacs. To avoid getting wet, you will be wearing wet weather gear and high rubber boots (wellies or gum boots). Some landings will be “dry” and some “wet”. Zodiacs were developed by the famous Jacques Cousteau and these nimble, rugged boats are the best way to get to shore quickly and efficiently in the challenging polar conditions, as well as being lots of fun.

Hike the Tundra

On all polar voyages, there will be ample opportunity to go ashore and walk amongst rolling tundra, often carpeted in wildflowers in the warmer months.

Search for wildlife, walk to glaciers or points of interest, visit Inuit settlements or historic sites. Excursions will vary from short strolls to longer hikes. If you prefer, you can choose to remain on the shore and just enjoy the view.

Kayak Amongst Icebergs

Sea kayaking is an optional but highly recommended activity, which lets you navigate icebergs at your own pace.

Kayaking excursions are in small groups with guides and some experience is necessary. You will paddle into bays and inlets, circumnavigating icebergs. Sea kayaking is only available on certain voyages and is subject to weather conditions. All equipment, guides and instruction are included. Please request this option (additional cost) at the time of booking.

What is the climate like in the Arctic?

The weather in the Arctic is very variable and you may experience bright, sunny days as well as white-outs, fog and snow squalls. Temperatures in summer vary from just below to just above freezing. You will need good quality polar clothing in layers, as on sunny days out of the wind, it can be warm enough to strip down to a t-shirt.

What can I combine the Arctic with?

Any voyage to the Canadian Arctic will start or end in a Canadian city, so your cruise can be combined with a holiday in mainland Canada. See our Canada & Alaska program for a wide range of tours and adventures.

How do you get to the Canadian Arctic?

Most journeys start in a mainland city such as Toronto or Montreal with an overnight stay at a hotel where you will meet the group. The next day, you will board a charter flight to a port like Resolute or Kugluktuk to board your expedition ship. Another charter flight at the end of the voyage will return you to a major city in Canada, or Europe depending on the itinerary.

Throughout your Canadian Arctic cruise you'll be greeted with sights, sceneries and wildlife that you never expected. Very few people explore this remote landscape and you'll be captivated by the wild and rugged feeling that envelops you.

We know that there are a lot of things to think about when deciding on your perfect Canadian Arctic cruise, so we have listed everything below. From pre-trip planning, to choosing the right itinerary and travel insurance.

Best Time To Cruise The Canadian Arctic

Canadian Arctic cruise - best time to cruise

A Canadian Arctic cruise can only be completed in the summer season.

The higher temperatures in summer melt the ice-floes, allowing access to the thousands of islands that make up the Canadian Arctic archipelago.

Generally temperatures range around 10 degrees celsius and the sun stays above the horizon 24 hours a day during the peak month of July.

When you go during the summer period largely depends on what you wish to  see. For people looking to follow in the steps of the great explorers such as Franklin and Amundsen and complete the fabled Northwest Passage, you'll need to travel in July or August when the channels have opened up completely and are free of ice.

Early summer is also a great time to see polar bears stalking the coast for food and walrus hauling out on the ice. Wildflowers are in bloom and the entire area looks stunning. Pods of beluga whale are common sightings in July, as are humpbacks and narwhal.

However, if whales are your main purpose for your Canadian Arctic cruise, then later in the season around August/September is better. During this period many species can be seen including minke, bowheads, sperm whales, and the mighty blue whale.

Winter in the Canadian Arctic is very cold. The ice chokes up the Northwest Passage, making it impossible for ships to navigate.

There are however winter land based tours to places like Churchill.

During these tours you can dog sled and take nature walks under the stars. The most notable element of these winter tours iswitnessing the majestic Northern Lights!

Churchill is actually one of the top three spots in the world to see the Northern Lights with an incredible average of 300 nights of Aurora activity per year!

Types of Expedition Ships

types of Canadian Arctic cruise ships

Deciding what size/type of ship you want to travel on is hugely important.

Do you want a large ship with all the mod-cons? Or do you want a cheaper, smaller research-style vessel?

Both have their pros and cons. Large ships offer better facilities whilst smaller ships can access smaller bays and inlets.

Other options to consider include on-board facilities, staff ratio, activities, and food quality.

canadian arctic trips

Research Vessels

The cheapest option for a Canadian Arctic cruise is to sail aboard a research-style vessel.

Although once used for research, these ships have been turned into expedition cruise ships.

As expected, the accommodation and facilities are basic, however, you do get a great sense of adventure aboard these ships.

Although basic, research ships are often small and can navigate small inlets easily.

Expedition Ships

Expedition-style ships are often purpose built to suit adventurous-style cruising.

Although not luxurious, you'll generally get a gym, library and excellent lounge space.

Cabins won't be enormous, but they will be comfortable and often provide sea views.

Expedition ships are very popular as they find a nice balance between luxury and research whilst not breaking the bank.

Luxury Cruises

Luxury cruise ships offer all the comforts of home whilst still maintaining that adventure feel.

Expect several restaurant options, gym, sauna, library and good-sized rooms.

Although these are luxury ships, they are still expedition-style vessels and you shouldnt expect pools and cinemas!

Also bear in mind that luxury ships tend to be bigger than others and you may not get as many shore landings.

Canadian Arctic Cruise Cost

Canadian Arctic cruise cost

As mentioned above, Canadian Arctic cruises are not cheap. This is largely to do with the high costs of operating a cruise in a remote landscape.

The bare minimum you should expect to pay for a Canadian Arctic cruise is at least $3,000. This would be a basic 8 day cruise with shared cabin and facilities.

This does not mean that the cruise will be poor. You'll still visit stunning locations and witness wildlife that you have never seen before.

Other Cost Considerations

Beside the main cruise cost, there are also a number of other cost factors to consider.

Solo Travelers

Travelling solo often costs more as you can't spread the costs of sharing a cabin. However, if there are spaces, many companies will allow you to share a cabin with others in the same situation.

If you want your own room then you should really expect to pay between US$7,000 - $12,000 for a standard Baffin island or Greenland / Canadian Arctic cruise. Often if you pay just a little more, you'll have an experience that is 10 times better! It is also worth noting that once aboard your cruise, there are actually very few added costs. All your food, drink and accommodation is paid for.

The only major costs you will need to think about once your cruise is booked is your flights and possible clothing purchases. Because the Canadian Arctic is very remote, flight costs are not cheap and, depending where you live, you should expect to pay at least $1,000.

If you live in a cold weather environment then purchasing cold weather gear will not be necessary, however, for people who don't, this is an added budget concern.

Although temperatures are not super cold, you should still expect days below freezing, particularly at night. Wind chill factor is another issue and you'll definitely want a good jacket for your cruise.

Visa and other Misc. Expenses

Although there are very few other costs once aboard your ship, you will need to consider hotel costs either side of your cruise.

Also consider drinks, laundry, visas etc. These costs will add up.

Choosing The Right Cruise

canadian arctic trips

The Canadian Arctic offers a wide range of cruise itineraries. Deciding on your perfect Canadian Arctic cruise can therefore be daunting and somewhat difficult. Don't worry though, this is why we're here.

To help you decide, we always ask the same question; what do you want to get out of your cruise?

This is the most important question as you don't want to be disappointed with your trip. Do you want to see whales, polar bears, musk ox, dramatic landscapes, icebergs? Or perhaps you want an itinerary with loads of activities like diving, kayaking and dog sledding?

Deciding this will get you well on the way to deciding on your perfect Canadian Arctic cruise.

  • activities
  • cabin type
  • book ahead

Choosing when to cruise will make your itinerary choice easier.

Although Summer is the only time you can travel, when you cruise in Summer will make a difference to what you see. For example, if you want to see polar bear cubs then March is your best bet. Later in the season is best for exploring the outher islands like Baffin Island.

The next thing to decide on is how much time you have?

Some Canadian Arctic cruises are just 8 days whilst the Northwest Passage cruise can take over 3 weeks. Work out how much time you have spare and that will also reduce your itinerary choices.

Deciding where you want to visit is obviously key.

We advise you to research all the destinations available such as Newfoundland, Baffin Island, Hudson Bay etc. and decide which one grabs you the most.

Activites are generally offered on most Canadian Arctic cruises.

These include kayaking, dog sledding, diving and even snorkeling with Narwhal! Decide which activity you want to and choose the itinerary and ship that offers this.

There are a large amount of expedition ships that cruise through the Canadian Arctic.

Due to this, the cabin options are extensive. We always suggest asking your specialist or operator to send some photos through prior to booking.

Please book ahead. We really can't stress this enough.

Canadian Arctic cruises book up well in advance. To avoid dissapointment we suggest booking at least one year in advance. Many people book earlier than this.

Canadian Arctic Cruise: Wildlife

Canadian Arctic cruise - wildlife

The Canadian Arctic is truly a wildlife lovers dream.

Of all the places in the Arctic region, Northern Canada and the archipelago of islands offer the most diversity.

Baffin Island is generally considered to be the best location for wildlife, often being referred to as the 'jewel of the High Arctic'. There are over 70 specie of bird that nest on the island and polar bears, wolves, caribou and whales are common sightings.

On Ellesmere Island musk ox roam the grasslands and Arctic foxes hunt the coastlines for bird eggs.

Species such as beluga, humpback, minke, bowhead and blue whales are seen frequently. Baffin Island is also a great place to the see the rare narwhal.

Canadian Arctic Cruise: Things To Do

things to do on a Canadian Arctic cruise

Because the Canadian Arctic is such a large region, there are countless activites and things to see.

Visit Inuit cultures, swim with whales, watch a polar bear hunt or kayak among huge icebergs, the options are endless!

Some of the most remote islands sit within the Canadian Arctic and are home to incredible wildlife such as the huge Musk Ox!

Read below to get a little more information.

The Northern Lights

things to do on a Canadian Arctic cruise - Northern lights

With over 300 days of aurora activity a year, Churchill is one of the top three places on earth to see the majestic Northern lights!

Take a winter wonderland tour where you'll see the lights every single night.

During these tours you'll also visit Inuit communities, take wildlife walks under the stars and even dog sled!

Photography

Canadian-arctic-cruise-photography

For many visitors to the Canadian Arctic, photography is one of the main draw cards.

The abundance of wildlife coupled with the dramatic scenery makes it ideal for great photo opportunities. The constant light also means that photographers can spend more time doing the thing they love.

Luckily, most expedition cruises will have a photography expert onboard. They often know the best spots and great framing options at certain locations.

If you haven't photographed in a cold location there are certain things to know and the experts will hopefully take you through these things.

Wildlife Watching

things to do on a Canadian Arctic cruise - wildlife watching

Because the Canadian Arctic has such a wide and diverse range of wildlife, you'll be constantly on the lookout for the next sighting!

Expect to see polar bears, musk ox, seabirds, whales and much more.

You'll need to decide on your itinerary prior to departure as not every creature will be seen on each itinerary.

canadian arctic trips

Kayaking and Zodiacs

things to do on a Canadian Arctic cruise - kayak

Many Canadian Arctic cruises will offer extra activites aboard your ship.

Kayaking is one of the most popular of these options. It allows you to get close to the wildlife and view ice formations from angles not seen from the ship.

You'll also get many zodiac trips during your cruise which will allow you to go ashore and explore the flora and fauna.

canadian arctic trips

Scuba Diving and Snorkelling

things to do on a Canadian Arctic cruise - scuba

Although it's not everyones cup of tea due to the cold waters, scuba diving is offered on select Canadian Arctic cruise itineraries.

One of the best options is just off Baffin Island where you'll witness an underwater eco-sytem that few others ever have. You will need to be a certified diver and have expereince in cold water.

Snorkelling in Hudgson Bay is also offered. You'll get to see beluga and narwhal if you're lucky.

canadian arctic trips

Camping, Skiing and Hiking

things to do on a Canadian Arctic cruise - camping

Additional activities such as camping, skiing and dog sledding are frequently offered on Canadian Arctic cruises.

These will generally come at an additional cost, however, we think it's well worth it!

There are few times in your life where you will ge the opportuity to camp out on the ice or take a pack of snow dogs on a sled run.

Canadian Arctic Packing List

Canadian Arctic cruise packing list

Although you will be cruising in summer, the Canadian Arctic is still cold. Day time temperatures stay around 10 degrees celsius whilst night time temperatures can get far colder.

There is also the wind which greatly decreases the outside temperature.

Because of this, bringing the right clothing is paramount. You'll enjoy yourself far more if you're comfortable and warm during your cruise. I

If you live in a cold environment then you'll no doubt have the necessary clothing. However, for people coming from a warm climate, you may ned to purchase a few items.

Items you'll need to consider before sailing are as follows:

Items To Consider

Clothing: Cold weather means layering up. We recommend a base layer, shirt, fleece and outer jacket to protect from the wind and rain.

Footwear: Because you'll be making wet shore landings, you'll need to bring specific boots on your cruise. Standard hiking boots won't cut it I'm afraid!

Headgear: Because you lose most of your heat through your head, seeing your head warm with a good beanie is very important.

Gloves: Your hands will freeze before any other art of your body. Purchasing a good pair of gloves is therefore paramount.

Bags and Daypacks: Travelling with camera gear, water bottle and snacks require a good day pack.

Important Accessories: From water bottles and zip-locks to spare batteries and ear plugs, there are tons f accessories that will make your Arctic cruise that much more pleasant.

Canadian Arctic Highlights

Baffin island.

Canadian-arctic-cruise baffinisland

Baffin Island is jewel of the High Arctic and legendary gateway to the Northwest Passage. The island is a paradise for wildlife with over 70 species of bird, polar bears, walrus, wolves, caribou and numerous species of whales.

Ellesmere Island

Canadian-arctic-cruise ellesmere island

The tenth largest island on the planet, Ellesmere is another haven for wildlife. This is the best place to spot musk ox grazing on the grass during summer. You can also spot polar bears and walrus hauling up in the ice floats.

Beechey Island

beechey-island

If it's history you're after then Beechey Island may just be the best spot. Retrace the Pathways of Franklin and his expedition. Beechey Island is the location in which the famous expedition wintered in 1885/86 during their search for the Northwest Passage.

Northwest Passage

canadian arctic cruise northwest passage

The most legendary cruise route is now a reality. Because of global warming, the pack ice, which has stopped expeditions for years, has now melted enough to allow large cruise ships through. Discover Inuit settlements, wildlife and dramatic scenery as you travel through one of the most famous passages on earth.

Hudson Bay

canadian arctic cruise hudson bay

Hudson Bay is the world's second largest bay and without doubt the best place to see beluga whales! Thousands enter the bay during summer and many boat trips are geared towards this event. Also expect to see polar bears roaming the coast line in search of food.

Leopold Island

prince-leopold-island

Although a bleak looking island, the 300m cliffs are truly dramatic, especially when visited up close on a zodiac! The island is an important breeding ground for birds such as thick-billed murres, northern fulmars and black-legged kittiwakes.

Highlights of the region

Polar bear running over the snow

Discover the true kings of the north

The Inuit people of Canada’s far north call the polar bear Nanuk, meaning ‘Animal Worthy of Great Respect.’ Others say ‘Titan of the Tundra.' Whatever you call it, awe is what you will feel upon first encountering this mighty animal .

Inukshuk and visible aurora natural light display shimmers in the sky at night in Churchill, Manitoba

The Northern Lights shimmer and dance

The aurora borealis appear in the middle of the night as a kaleidoscope of phosphorescent green, yellow, pink and magenta that shimmers and dances across the sky. Watching this mesmerizing display of the Northern Lights is a bucket list experience!

A polar bear walks over the icy tundra in front of a large vehicle

Snap that once in a lifetime photograph

Those who venture to the tiny town of Churchill in northern Manitoba are rewarded for their efforts. Safari into the taiga and tundra along the shore of Hudson Bay, where polar bears roam the coast. There is no better opportunity to photograph polar bears!

Dog sled team running through the snow

Discover traditional ways to explore

The huskies are almost more excited to pull you through a snowy forest than you are to ride in the sled, but that’s part of what makes this winter pastime so much fun. The other part is the fresh air and frosty mountain scenery.

Person putting on old fashioned snow shoes

A winter wonderland awaits

This snow covered wilderness is best explored by dogsled, snowshoe or tundra buggy. Our Canadian Insiders help you decide what’s best for you and take care of the scheduling and booking.

Encounter beluga whales aboard a zodiac

Witness beluga whales as they play just metres from the shore during their annual migration. You can see these gentle creatures from a boat or kayak, and sometimes from the shore.

Fresh Tracks Canadian Insider Noriko

Chasing polar bears in Churchill, Manitoba

From far away, it’s difficult to spot a polar bear. Their yellowish-white fur blends perfectly with the snow and ice that covers the desolate tundra, and they appear like nothing more than lumps of snow or pale rocks.

Up close, there’s no mistaking a polar bear for a lifeless object. You can see huge muscles that ripple underneath a robe of thick fur, long claws that scrape across the ground as they walk, and dark, curious eyes that peer up at the windows of your Tundra Buggy.

Quest for the Northern Lights – Arctic Explorer

**This rail tour is currently on a “Stop Sell” basis. Take in the beautiful cities of St. Petersburg and Moscow, as well as exploring deep into the Russian and Norwegian Arctic Circle on this luxury, private train, in pursuit of the magnificent Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights).

  • Complimentary hats, Russian traditional felt boots and gloves, specially designed to keep out the worst of the cold, yours to keep!
  • Guided tour of Catherine’s Palace in Pushkin and the Hermitage Museum, the former Winter Palace of the Tsars
  • Spend New Year’s Eve celebrating as you cross the Russian countryside (December departures)
  • Cross the Arctic Circle and travel into northern Norway
  • Watch the night skies to see if the Aurora Borealis will make an appearance

Tour Code: 002297-W20

Flight arrivals into Moscow and transfer to the luxurious Four Seasons Moscow (or similar) situated on Red Square for one night. This evening you are invited to a champagne drinks reception with the opportunity to meet your fellow travellers before our exclusive Welcome Dinner. Specially selected international wines are included with dinner, as with all meals during the tour.

At the start of your adventure why not extend your stay in Moscow with pre-tour nights to explore more of the city at your leisure and enjoy the lively atmosphere of the Christmas markets or go ice skating on one of the outdoor rinks in the central squares?

Today we visit Red Square, an iconic symbol of Russia’s former military and political might with its eclectic mix of fascinating architecture, such as the ornate St Basil’s Cathedral’s magnificent onion-domed spires, the beautiful façade of the world famous GUM Department store constructed in Tsarist times, and the sombre and evocative site of Lenin’s tomb.

We’ll also take a tour of the opulent and unique stations of the Moscow metro – showpieces of Socialist art furnished with statues, frescoes and mosaics, unsurpassed anywhere in the world.

The historic city of Vladimir was founded in 990 and is one of Russia’s oldest communities. With an architectural wealth, it has been decreed a UNESCO World Heritage Site. What better place to spend Rozhdestvo (Russian Christmas), celebrated today? Our tour takes in Uspensky Cathedral, built between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries. It is considered one of the most important and beautiful of Russian cathedrals, where many of the prominent Russian Tsars were crowned.

From Vladimir we travel to Suzdal, one of Russia’s most perfectly preserved walled cities dating back to 1024, located 35 kilometres from Vladimir. Here we visit the atmospheric St Euthymius Monastery to witness an enchanting choral performance by the resident monks. No Russian winter experience would be complete without the horse-drawn sleigh ride through this stunning location.

Day 3 is New Year’s Eve on the December departures, with special programming.

On the December trips, today we have the opportunity to have a relaxed start to New Year’s Day and to unwind after our evening of celebration. On both December and January  departures start your day with a sumptuous breakfast. Spend the day reflecting on the many sights we are about to experience on our rail journey, maybe listen to a talk or simply relax and enjoy the ever-changing winter landscape outside our window. Today our train crosses the Arctic Circle on our quest to see the Northern Lights.

We will continue to Murmansk, a city halfway between Moscow and the North Pole, and 120 miles north of the Arctic Circle. As the main city of the Kola Peninsula, it started as a tiny settlement and Arctic trading post. In 1916, under pressure from the British to establish a support port, Murmansk was founded.

Thanks to the influence of the Gulf Stream, the port is ice-free year-round. Homeport of Russia’s nuclear-powered icebreakers we’ll visit the Nuclear Icebreaker Museum Ship.

This morning we leave our train with an overnight bag at the Russian border station of Nikel and we transfer by bus (90 minutes drive) across the Russian/Norwegian border to Kirkenes for a two night stay at the Thon Hotel (or similar). We will visit the magical Snow Hotel just 15 km outside Kirkenes. We’ll have a welcome drink in the snow bar and a tour of the Snow Hotel with its ice sculptures and snow paintings by local and international artists. After a traditional meal in the snow hotel’s Hoyloftet restaurant we’ll take an evening bus tour in search of the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights). If the sky is clear our guest astronomer will be on hand to advise us during star-gazing and will bring the night sky to life with his extensive knowledge.

Optional Activities in Kirkenes: You may like to book some additional optional activities such as an evening snowmobile tour (3 hours) or husky dog sledge tour (2 hours) in search of the Northern Lights. Each sledge is pulled by a team of eight dogs, and can seat two people and a driver called a dog musher. These activities have limited places and are weather permitting – please request at the time of booking the tour. Contact us for prices.

For a really memorable experience why not choose the ‘coolest’ hotel check-in around and stay overnight at the Snow Hotel? Upgrades to the snow hotel are limited so book early to avoid disappointment. The snow hotel stays at a constant minus five degrees centigrade and thermal sleeping bags are provided. Showers, toilets and a Scandinavian sauna are provided in a building next to the snow hotel.

This morning a unique winter experience awaits on our King Crab Safari. The excursion begins with a snowmobile-drawn sleigh across the frozen fjords. Warm clothing and a helmet is provided. Through a hole in the ice your master guide will demonstrate how to catch the magnificent Arctic King Crab (which can span two metres and weigh upto 15kgs) and prepare it for cooking. We then continue by sleigh to the nearby Fisherman’s Lodge, where the crabs you catch will be prepared and cooked for you. It is here you can enjoy your delicious King Crab meal by the cosy log fire.

This afternoon we return to the Snow Hotel to see the resident reindeers and visit the biggest husky dog farm in eastern Finnmark or return to Kirkenes Village for a walking tour.

Today we cross the border back into Russia and re-join our train which is waiting for us in Nikel Murmansk.

We’ll spend the afternoon on board travelling through Arctic Russia. Relax and enjoy the ever-changing winter landscape outside your window or chat to fellow passengers. Afternoon tea with freshly baked Russian cookies will be served in our stylish Bar Lounge Car.

Petrozavodsk stretches along the western shore of Lake Onega – the second largest lake in Europe. It is one of the major cultural and industrial centres of the North-West of Russia and is the capital of the Republic of Karelia.

We take a city tour with local folk entertainment, followed by a traditional Russian meal, with a generous allowance of international wine and drinks included with our dinner.

For the December trips today is Sochelnik (Russian Christmas Eve). We take a city tour and then celebrate Sochelnik (Russian Christmas Eve) with a Karelian Folk Performance and continue our festivities with a traditional Russian Christmas Eve meal, known as the Holy Supper. As always a generous allowance of international wine and drinks are included with our dinner as we celebrate together.

On December departures, today will see Russians celebrate their Christmas Day and the city of St. Petersburg will be beautifully decorated for Rozhdestvo (Russian Christmas).

Scheduled for a morning arrival, St Petersburg which is a stunning city, crowded with splendid palaces, impressive historical monuments, wide boulevards, beautiful bridges and is renowned as the Ballet Capital of the World.

Make one of your evenings in St Petersburg extra special by purchasing a ticket for a ballet or opera performance at one of the world-renowned St Petersburg theatres (subject to schedule and availability and pre-booked at least six weeks prior to departure).

During our time spent in St Petersburg we have a guided tour of Catherine’s Palace in Pushkin and the world-famous Hermitage Museum, the former Winter Palace of the Tsars which houses the royal art collection of over three million works. It is one of the world’s largest and most impressive art museums.

BREVOORT ISLAND, Canada (TMX) -- A worker at a radar station in the Canadian Arctic was killed last week in a rare attack by two polar bears, the Nasittuq Corporation, which operates the facility, said in a statement.

The victim, who was not identified by the company, was working at the remote station on Brevoort Island in Nunavut when the bears attacked on Aug. 8.

The company said employees responded to the scene and “one of the animals was put down.”

“The safety and well-being of our employees is our highest priority, and we are deeply committed to ensuring a safe working environment. We are working closely with local authorities and regulatory agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident,” the company said.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, and colleagues affected by this loss,” the company said. “Nasittuq Corporation is providing support to the family of the deceased during this difficult time. Additionally, we are offering counseling services to all employees affected by this.”

Fatal polar bear attacks are extremely rare, in large part because their Arctic habitat is not populated by many people. But polar bears, which depend on Arctic ice to access food, have faced starvation in recent years as they struggle to adapt to life on land, according to researchers.

The most recent fatal polar bear attack occurred in January 2023, when 24-year-old Summer Myomick and her 1-year-old son Clyde were killed while walking in the remote Alaskan village of Wales. After mauling the mother and son, the bear reportedly chased multiple people before it was shot by a resident.

A rare attack by two polar bears has killed a worker at a remote radar station in the Canadian Arctic.

The unidentified victim was attacked and killed by the bears at the facility in Nunavut, Canada on Aug. 8, the Nasittuq Corporation, which operates the site, confirmed in a news release .

“It is with deep sorrow that Nasittuq Corporation confirms a tragic incident occurred yesterday at one of our work locations on Brevoort Island, Nunavut. An attack by two polar bears has resulted in the loss of one of our valued employees,” the company stated, per the release.

The corporation shared that employees responded to the scene following the incident and one of the bears was put down. The events leading up to the attack were not disclosed.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, and colleagues affected by this loss. Nasittuq Corporation is providing support to the family of the deceased during this difficult time,” the company added.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

According to local news outlet Nunatsiaq News , the site is among dozens that form the U.S. and Canada’s North Warning Systems. These radar systems are governed by the North American Aerospace Defense Command and located across the U.S. and Canadian Arctic.

Nasittuq president Chris Webb shared his reaction to the tragic incident with Nunatsiaq News, “We need to respect the family in this tragic situation and let the [investigators] and the authorities do their job.”

Polar bears kill worker at remote radar site in Canadian Arctic

A pair of polar bears attacked and killed a worker at a remote government radar site in the Canadian Arctic, the facility's operator said, marking at least the second fatal polar bear attack since last year.

The attack took place Thursday at the outpost on Brevoort Island, in Canada's far northeastern Nunavut territory, said Nasittuq Corporation , the logistics company contracted to operate the site.

"An attack by two polar bears has resulted in the loss of one of our valued employees," the company said Friday. "Nasittuq employees responded to the scene and one of the animals was put down."

The site is one of dozens of North Warning System outposts dotting Canada's far north, forming a surveillance tripwire against aircraft incursions or cruise missile attacks.

The radar coverage spans over 3,100 miles from Alaska to Labrador in eastern Canada.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, and colleagues affected by this loss," the company said, adding that it was providing support to the victim's family and counseling services to other employees.

Polar bear attacks on humans are rare but the incident marks at least the second fatality since 2023.

Last year, a polar bear emerged from the impenetrable snow squall and  killed a woman and her young son  in in Wales, Alaska, just below the Arctic Circle. It marked the first fatal polar bear attack in 30 years in Alaska, the only U.S. state that is home to the animals.

In 2018, a 31-year-old father was  killed in a polar bear attack  while protecting his children in Canada. That same year, Norwegian authorities said a  polar bear was shot and killed  after it attacked and injured a guard who was leading tourists off a cruise ship on an Arctic archipelago.

The polar bear species is declining because of disappearing Arctic sea ice. In 2021, scientists in Norway found polar bears were  inbreeding  as the species fights to survive. A  study  found that on the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, polar bear populations have seen a 10% loss in their genetic diversity from 1995 to 2016.

A 2020 study found that the melting sea ice is starving polar bears, and that within the century, polar bears  could be extinct , and declining genetic diversity increases the risk of extinction.

Polar bears kill worker in remote radar site in Canada

Two polar bears fatally attacked a worker at a remote radar site in the Canadian Arctic last week in one of the rare deadly polar bear attacks on humans, the facility’s operator said.

The encounter took place Thursday at a work station on Brevoort Island in Nunavut, a sparsely populated territory in Canada, according to a statement by Nasittuq Corp., a company that maintains and manages facilities in northern Canada.

The site of the attack is an outpost of the North Warning System, a string of air-defense radar stations operated by Nasittuq. The system protects North American airspace by detecting aircraft and cruise missiles flying within its radar range, Nasittuq’s website says.

The company said Friday that its employees responded to the attack and “one of the animals was put down.” The company did not describe the circumstances in the episode and said it was working with local authorities to conduct an investigation.

“The safety and well-being of our employees is our highest priority, and we are deeply committed to ensuring a safe working environment,” the company added. Nasittuq did not release the name of the employee who was killed.

Polar bear attacks on humans are rare, but last week’s episode was the second fatality since 2023.

Last year, a polar bear killed a woman and her year-old son in a remote village in western Alaska after it chased “multiple residents,’’ officials said at the time. The attack took place near a school in Wales, a remote village on the western edge of the Seward Peninsula.

The animals are more likely to attack a person when they are “nutritionally stressed” and in “below-average body condition,” according to a 2017 study published in the Wildlife Society Bulletin.

The same study reported that from 1870 to 2014, there were 73 confirmed polar bear attacks in five countries with territory adjacent to the Arctic Ocean: the United States, Canada, Russia, Norway and Denmark, which includes Greenland. Those attacks resulted in 20 fatalities, according to the study.

A half-century ago, those countries established a treaty to protect the species by establishing limits on hunting.

Polar bears are considered threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act because the sea ice that they rely on for hunting, feeding and migrating is shrinking because of climate change.

A U.S. citizen was detained in Moscow after attacking a police officer, Russian state media reported on Wednesday. The Moscow District Court ordered Joseph Tater, 46, to spend 15 days in jail under administrative arrest, the Associated Press confirmed. Tater is facing charges of petty hooliganism after he “behaved aggressively” towards a police officer while he tried to check into a Moscow hotel with incorrect documents, Russian state-affiliated news agency TASS reported. The report also said the Russian Investigative Committee is also opening a criminal case against the American for assaulting a police officer—a charge that could carry a five-year prison sentence. State Department deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel confirmed Tater was in Russian custody at a press briefing on Wednesday. “We’re aware of these reports of another American citizen being arrested in Russia, and we’re working to get as much information as we can, working to ascertain the consular situation, and see if consular access is available,” Patel said.

Record-setting heat waves are baking the Arctic region

Northern Canada, Alaska and northern Scandinavia have recently experienced record highs.

canadian arctic trips

Parts of the Arctic are enduring exceptionally high temperatures — up 30 to 40 degrees above normal — because of multiple intense heat domes.

One intense heat dome has progressed from northern Alaska to Canada’s Hudson Bay over the past week, delivering round after round of historically high temperatures. A smaller but equally persistent heat dome has been toasting parts of Scandinavia’s Arctic on the opposite side of the North Pole.

The exceptional warmth — intensified by human-caused climate change — is affecting a region that has warmed three times as much as the global average. And it’s happening as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration just announced July was the 14th successive month with record-high global temperatures.

Over the past week, temperatures soared to nearly 100 degrees Fahrenheit in Norman Wells, Canada, just 90 miles south of the Arctic Circle. Locations in Alaska set numerous record highs; the mercury climbed as high as 90 degrees in Eagle, 193 miles east of Fairbanks. Off the coast of Greenland, Longyearbyen, Norway, the northernmost city on Earth with a sizable population witnessed its warmest August day, with a high of nearly 70.

As these high-latitude locations have heated up, some of the cool air normally found there has been displaced into the mid-latitudes — offering temporary relief from scorching summer heat in parts of the central and eastern United States.

Heat in Canada’s north and Alaska

Underneath the heat dome in northern Canada, drought has intensified, and fires are ravaging many areas.

Canadian weather historian Thierry Goose has been compiling a growing number of temperature records. Some of the more notable records are listed below:

  • All-time highs in the Northwest Territories: Little Chicago at 97 degrees Fahrenheit (36.3 C), Fort McPherson at 95 degrees (35.1 C), Inuvik at 95 degrees (34.8 C), Trail Valley at 92 degrees (33.6 C) and Paulatuk at 88 degrees (31 C).
  • August record highs in the Northwest Territories: Fort Good Hope at 99 degrees (37 C), Norman Wells at 98 degrees (36.2 C), Tulita at 94 degrees (34.6 C) and Colville Lake at 87 degrees (30.4 C).
  • August record highs in Nunavut (in far northern Canada): Arviat at 88 degrees (31.3 C), Chesterfield Inlet at 87 degrees (30.6 C) and Coral Harbour at 81 degrees (27.1 C). Arviat set monthly records on multiple days.

Records were also set in portions of Alaska because of the same heat dome before it shifted east. Deadhorse, along the southern coast of the Arctic Ocean, set an all-time high of 89 on Aug. 6 and was warmer than most places on the Florida Peninsula.

The high temperature at Deadhorse, Alaska, along the Arctic Ocean coast, yesterday, August 6th, was an astonishing 31.7°C (89°F). That’s 21°C above average for the date and 2.2°C above the previous record. Exceptional heat for this part of the world. pic.twitter.com/zM1LdwTvh1 — Nahel Belgherze (@WxNB_) August 7, 2024

Heat and rapid ice melt near Norway

On the opposite side of the hemisphere, historic heat was observed north of the Arctic Circle in Scandinavia in recent days.

Longyearbyen in Norway’s Svalbard Islands — between the Greenland and Barents seas — reached its highest August temperature on record the 11th, with a high of 68 degrees (20.2 C), or about 4 degrees (2.2 C) above the previous monthly record, according to meteorologist Daan van den Broek. On the 12th it topped what had been the record before 2024 yet again. Such back-to-back highs are without modern precedent.

On Monday, the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Service shared imagery of freshwater flowing, and kicking up sediment, into the ocean in the Svalbard Islands.

“In early August, snow and ice melting on the surface of the Svalbard ice caps reached the highest levels ever recorded, while temperatures remained up to 5°C above average for this area of the Arctic Circle,” the group wrote.

Arctic heat to persist

The heat this month comes on the heels of one of the hottest Julys on record for much of Canada, according to data presented by meteorologist Patrick Duplessis. Cities that posted July record highs include Edmonton and Calgary. Some places in far-northern Canada now witnessing record heat, however, were colder than normal in July.

At the same time, Arctic sea ice levels are nearing their annual minimum and are the fourth lowest on record to date. The usual low point for the season arrives by mid- or late September.

Temperatures are forecast to run 10 to 20 degrees (5.5 to 11.1 C) or more above normal across Arctic and sub-Arctic Canada through at least the next week to 10 days.
