One hospital bed is roughly equivalent to the carbon footprint of five Canadian households. News

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is co-ordinated within our Office of Indigenous Relations .

In the Cemetery

Join Museum staff at Mount Hope Cemetery for a guided tour of Waterloo’s oldest community cemetery. In 1865, the councils of Waterloo and Berlin (Kitchener) decided to form a joint committee to investigate having a large community cemetery overlap between the two municipalities. A year later in September 1866, Waterloo decided to act on its own and purchased seven acres of land from the Village Reeve and Chairman of the Cemetery Committee, John Hoffman. An additional acre of land was donated by Hoffman to be used as a Free Cemetery. The cemetery opened on January 14, 1867 after the council of Waterloo passed by law 25 which set out the regulations for use; officially creating Mount Hope Cemetery. So let's explore this hidden jewel in Waterloo!

Tours offered below are approximately 1 hour and terrain is sometimes uneven and rough, so travel friendly shoes are recommended.

Kate's 5 fun things to do in and around Waterloo region: July 19 to 21

So much music this weekend with uptown waterloo jazz festival, hillside, cambridge scottish fest and more.

tours waterloo university

Social Sharing

After a very wet week, some sunshine this weekend will be appreciated (although there is a small chance of rain on Sunday).

The Fergus Medieval Faire is on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in downtown Fergus. It's a free and family oriented event with much merriment. Meet lords and ladies, as well as birds of prey, archers, musicians and kids can test their own skills with "fight the knight."

There's a Festival of Music and Art at the Nancy Campbell Academy in Stratford on Saturday which includes kids activities, live music and interactive art installations.

A Family Fun Day is also planned for downtown Cambridge on Saturday, including clowns, bouncy castles, live music and a kids zone.

In Guelph, Punkside 2024 is set for Friday night at the Red Papaya Thai and Grill in Old Quebec Street mall. This event will feature bands and musicians from Toronto, Guelph and Hamilton including The Class Assassins, The Washout and Cody James McDusa.

The Kitchener Panthers are on the road to London this Sunday with just one game over the weekend because the Intercounty Baseball League all-star game is happening Saturday in Welland.

The Guelph Royals — who have eight players in the all-star game and outfielder Josh Garton will take part in the homerun derby — are also on the road Sunday in Hamilton.

If you need to drive to where you're going this weekend, here are some local gas prices:

Uptown Waterloo Jazz Festival

Friday 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday 12:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., Sunday 12 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Uptown Waterloo

This annual festival will bring together local, national and international musicians to the outdoor stage, including: Laila Biali, Hilario Duran and his Latin Jazz Big Band, the Canadian Jazz Collective as well as a youth ensemble, Allison Au, Patti Payne and more.

The festival is free to attend. There's also food and other vendors who will be on site and the Jazz After Jazz series with concerts in local bars and restaurants.

The Eras Tour: Responsible Dog Ownership

Saturday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Gaukel Block, downtown Kitchener

Swifties and dog owners combine for this summer block party. Bring your four-legged friend and celebrate them while feeling the Taylor Swift vibes.

Organizers say this event " focuses on responsible dog ownership through the 'eras' of a dog's life."

Dogs must be kept on a six-foot leash at all times (no retractable leashes) and people are asked not to make introductions without asking permission.

Colourful poster with dogs

(I probably should make some joke or reference about Taylor Swift's The Black Dog song here but the song is not about a dog and instead references a bar name and it's kind of sad, and dogs are anything but sad, so, when it comes to something clever, there's a blank space in my brain on this one. But I know all too well that many people will be yelling "but daddy I love him" at the adorable pooches attending this event and an event filled with dogs is the opposite of a cruel summer.)

Cambridge Scottish Festival

Friday 5:45 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Churchill Park, 200 Christopher Dr., Cambridge

Friday night, the festival kicks off with a concert including Steel City Rovers, Blair Scottish Country Dancers, Old Man Flanagan's Ghost and Tom Keefer. There's also a celtic night market.

Then it's Games Day on Saturday which includes pipe and drum competitions, a massed fling, highland dancing, a children's area and the Heritage Highlands section, which includes clan tents, highland cows, spinners and weavers and a Jacobite encampment (kind of a re-enactment of a camp that would have been set up by the Jacobite army in 1745).

  • Cambridge Scottish Festival website

Hillside Festival

Friday 5:45 p.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday 12 p.m. to 11 p.m., Sunday 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Guelph Conservation Area

This annual festival has some pretty big names playing this year and some must-discover artists you will no doubt enjoy listening to in this outdoor event.

Here's just a taste of some of the artists: Aysanabee, Dwayne Gretzky, Patrick Watson, Moonbeam, Five Alarm Funk, Nobro, Ashley MacIsaac, Miniscule, Tragedy Ann, Moonriivr, Bombino, Blacking and the Rodeo Kings with Daniel Lanois and Terra Lightfoot.

That doesn't even mention the wide range of workshops, food stalls, artist vendors, children's area and so much more to enjoy.

Single day tickets and weekend passes are still available.

Downtown Kitchener Ribfest and Craft Beer Show

Friday 12 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday 12 p.m. to 10 p.m., Sunday 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Victoria Park, Kitchener

As the name suggests, there will be ribs and craft beer.

Of course, there's also other food vendors (blooming onions, ice cream, other smoked and barbecued treats), other drinks beyond craft beer, a kids' fun zone and live entertainment.

Admission is free but donations are accepted for The Food Bank of Waterloo Region.

Tour NDSU: ‘We roll out the red carpet’

Photo of an NDSU tour group

Interested students can learn all about what NDSU has to offer with a visit and tour of campus.

College tours help determine what college is the perfect fit for a student. At NDSU, tours are led by students who share their own campus experiences.  Every tour is personal and tailored for potential students.

Read below for some advice from two of our campus tour guides on how to make the most of your campus visit. Austin Anderson is a junior architecture major from Victoria, Minnesota, and Ally Hoekstra is a junior math education major from Forest Lake, Minnesota.

NDSU summer visit days are scheduled for Friday, July 26 and Friday, Aug. 2. Both include a morning session from 8:30 to noon and an evening session from 1 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. Sign up at the NDSU Visit Days website. Click the “Summer and Special Events” tab for more information.

How to prepare

Anderson and Hoekstra’s biggest piece of advice is to come ready for questions.  Some common questions are about dining and residence halls, campus life and the Fargo community.  Even if you don’t have any specific questions, ask your tour guides about their personal experiences at NDSU. We encourage prospective students to bring a friend or family member so your tour can be a fun and comfortable experience.

"I love when people ask me why I chose NDSU, but if I had a preference, I love it when they get more specific. Why did you choose to join Greek Life? Why did you choose NDSU over Iowa? Because then I can give them better insight that they can relate to. That's why you ask questions so then you can relate more,” Anderson said.

What to expect

Every college tour looks at classrooms, low rise and high-rise residence halls, the Memorial Union, the Wallman Wellness Center, lunch at a dining center, the library and the Quentin Burdick building - IT services. Getting a firsthand look at what we have to offer helps you envision your college experience at NDSU. Each tour is about two hours and an additional meeting with an admissions counselor is an additional 45 minutes.

Tailor the tour to you

“We roll out the red carpet and treat everyone as a VIP,” said Zeb Watkins, campus visit specialist in the Office of Admission. If you have specific places, buildings or people you want to see, we will try our best to make it happen. Be sure to ask about any clubs or activities you’re interested in. Some students may ask to see specific academic buildings or residence halls. We offer a various selection of tours throughout the year, including week day visits, group visits, virtual visits and summer events.

Explore what campus has to offer

There are a lot of on campus opportunities. NDSU offers around 280 student organizations,  including Greek life, intramurals, musical theater and cultural affiliations.  Ask your tour guide what they are involved in and let them know what interests you have. NDSU Memorial Union is a homebase for students between classes. It offers a variety of food options, the bookstore, multicultural programs, student help and more. Our wellness center not only has treadmills and weights, but it also has a variety of group fitness classes, swimming pools, rock climbing and more. Our culture at NDSU is very welcoming and fun. You will see people enjoying our outdoor volleyball, skating around campus or participating in events.

"There's so many opportunities that you can take advantage of,” Hoekstra said.

Learn about the local community

Check out what the Fargo-Moorhead community has to offer after your tour. We suggest you go downtown to eat, check out the coffee shops and shop at the various boutiques.  Take the opportunity to learn the local Metro bus system. It’s free for students with an NDSU identification card. After going downtown, you can explore the rest of the area. We have something for anyone to enjoy, including Suiteshots golf simulation, the Red River Zoo, Thunder Road fun park, West Acers mall, the Lights Event Center in West Fargo and many restaurant options all around Fargo.

Schedule a campus visit and tour at our Campus Visit website .
