Make sure you know which generation of Grand Voyager you're looking at, because you should avoid the model that was built between 1997 and 2001. It doesn't drive nearly so well and suffered a very poor safety rating. The version you're looking at here righted all of those wrongs and is substantially better.

Once you've got that sorted out, pay special attention to the gearbox, especially on the diesels. Many have been replaced under Chrysler's three-year unlimited-mileage warranty, but some will have slipped through the net.

The brakes and suspension should be examined closely, too. This is a big, heavy vehicle, even before you load it, and that takes its toll on mechanical bits and pieces.

Chrysler Grand Voyager heater not working – causes and diagnosis

The heater in Chrysler Grand Voyager ensures comfortable temperature in the passenger compartment when the weather is chilly. There are many reasons for poor heating performance in Grand Voyager, which are explained in this article.

The heater may stop working in Chrysler Grand Voyager due to low coolant level or air in the cooling system, clogged heater core, bad thermostat, faulty blend door actuator, bad water pump, dirty cabin air filter, bad blower motor, or HVAC control unit malfunction.

1. Low coolant or air in the cooling system

Low coolant level or air in the cooling system can cause the heater to stop working properly in Grand Voyager. If the cooling system is not full and bled properly, the water pump will not be able to push the coolant around the system efficiently.

The heating system in Grand Voyager uses hot coolant or antifreeze from the engine block to heat the interior of the vehicle. The hot coolant is pumped through the heater core located behind the dashboard. When you turn on the heating, air gets blown through the heater core, warming the air in the cabin. If there is air trapped inside the heater core, the coolant will not be able to flow through it properly. Since the heater core is usually slightly higher, the air will accumulate in there first. By filling and properly bleeding the system the heat should come back.

Sloshing water sound

Low coolant level or air in the heater core can sometimes cause sloshing sound from behind the dashboard when the engine is running. The sound is most prominent right after you start the vehicle.

Check coolant level

Checking coolant level in Grand Voyager is a fairly some job. You just have to locate the coolant overflow reservoir and inspect the level of coolant in it. If the coolant level is low, open the cap and pour some coolant into the tank until it is between minimum and maximum mark.

2. Clogged heater core

Clogged heater core is one of the leading causes of heating not working in Chrysler Grand Voyager. The design of the heater core is similar to the radiator, it has narrow internal channels through which hot coolant flows. Over time, the heater core can begin to rust or mineral deposits can form in these channels, blocking the flow of the coolant.

You don’t have to remove the heater core in your Grand Voyager to check if it is clogged. Locate two rubber hoses that connect to the heater core through the firewall area. Feel both the rubber lines going in and out of the heater core after the engine has warmed up. Both should be hot. If one is hot and the other is cold, you have a plugged heater core.

Flush the heater core

Before you consider replacing the heater core in your Grand Voyager, it is recommended to flush the existing heater core. Flushing is done by pushing water through the outlet hose of the heater core and draining the gunk from the inlet hose. There are flush kits available in the market that can help you do the job yourself.

3. Bad thermostat

Thermostat is a part of the cooling system in Chrysler Grand Voyager which ensures that the engine reaches its optimal operating temperature as quickly as possible and maintain it under all operating conditions.

Thermostat is stuck open

When you start your Grand Voyager when the engine is cold, the thermostat cuts off flow of coolant through the radiator in order to quickly reach the optimal engine operating temperature. But if the thermostat has developed a defect and is stuck to open position, the coolant will continuously flow through the radiator and the engine may take a long time to reach its optimal operating temperature.

Heater takes a long time to blow hot air

Since the heating system in Grand Voyager relies on the hot coolant from the engine to heat the interior, the heater will blow cold air until the engine reaches its normal operating temperature. But if the weather is too cold, the engine may never reach its optimal operating temperature with a stuck open thermostat. Your vehicle may also consume more fuel than normal.

5. Bad water pump

The water pump is the heart of the cooling system in Grand Voyager responsible for pumping coolant throughout the system and cooling the engine. If the water pump has worn out and the coolant is not being circulated as effectively as it used to, it can cause the heater to stop working properly because there’s less coolant available to transfer heat between the engine and the heater core.

Water pumps usually last for more than 100,000 miles, but they can fail at any time. A bad water pump will not only cause poor heating, but can also result in engine damage due to overheating. Therefore it is important to diagnose a failing water pump at early stages to avoid expensive repairs later on.

6. Faulty blend door actuator

Blend door actuator plays a role in controlling the temperature inside your Grand Voyager. If the blend door actuator fails to fully open the blend door towards the heater core, it will result in poor heating performance.

The most common symptom of a faulty blend door actuator in Chrysler Grand Voyager is a slight clicking sound (or other unusual noise) repeatedly coming from under the dashboard. The sound will be most prominent for a few seconds when you turn on the air conditioning or adjust the temperature.

Symptom: knocking sound

A knocking noise from behind the dashboard could be an indicator of a bad blend door actuator in your Grand Voyager. The sound is something like a light tapping on the door and it typically happens when you turn on/off the air conditioning system or start the engine.

Symptom: creaking sound

One side hot, other side cold.

A common symptom of a faulty blend door actuator in vehicles with dual zone climate control system is one side blowing hot air while the other side is blowing cold air.

Replace the faulty part

A bad blend door actuator usually cannot be repaired and must be replaced with a new one. Due to the complexity of the replacement job, it is not recommended as a DIY project. The blend door actuator may require recalibration after replacement.

7. Dirty cabin air filter

Dirty cabin air filter is the leading cause of weak heater airflow in Chrysler Grand Voyager. The pollen filter, also known as the cabin air filter or microfilter, is responsible for filtering the air that the passengers breathe in the cabin. A dirty filter causes the overall ventilation of the interior to deteriorate resulting in reduced heating and airflow.

There is no fixed time for replacing the cabin air filter, but most manufacturers recommend a change after 10,000-20,000 miles. If you drive your vehicle in dusty or polluted environment, the filter can get dirty much sooner than manufacturer’s recommendation. Additionally, if you drive your Grand Voyager with AC system set to fresh outside air most of the time, your cabin air filter will get dirty much sooner as compared to air recirculation mode.

Replace the filter at the start of every winter for optimal performance

It is generally recommended to replace the cabin air filter every year at the start of the winter season. Spring and summer seasons are hard on the cabin air filter because of pollen and bugs, and in the fall they can get clogged with leaf debris. This gives you a fresh start for the winter, improves defroster performance, and reduces chances of mold or mildew growth.

Can you clean a dirty cabin air filter?

Instead of changing the cabin air filter in Grand Voyager, it is often recommended to first clean the filter. This can be done, for example, with a vacuum cleaner or a compressed air system, removing at least a large part of the visible dirt particles. Unfortunately, this procedure does not allow you to get into the deeper layers of the filter. Therefore, the filter performance will not increase significantly even after cleaning. As a rule, there is no avoiding a change if the filter is dirty.

8. Sluggish blower motor

If the blower motor in your Grand Voyager is not spinning fast enough either due to an internal defect or due to a fault in the resistor/control module, the airflow from the AC vents will be weaker and the heating performance will be degraded.

When a blower motor goes bad, it usually makes unusual noises when in operation, and the passengers may feel reduced airflow from the air vents. Keep in mind that reduced airflow doesn’t always indicate a problem with the blower motor, as it can also happen due to a clogged cabin air filter, dirty evaporator, or a bad mode door actuator. So, all of them must be inspected when diagnosing poor airflow.

9. Dead blower motor (no airflow)

If there is no air flow from the air vents in the dashboard when you turn on the heater in your Chrysler Grand Voyager, it means the problem is related to the fan or blower motor function.

The most common causes for blower motor not working in Chrysler Grand Voyager are blown fuse, bad relay, resistor or control module malfunction, and faulty blower motor. However, a bad electrical connector or broken wire, or a defect in the climate control unit can also cause the blower motor to stop working.

10. Dirty evaporator

Dirty evaporator can cause weak airflow and reduce the heating performance in Grand Voyager. Although, the evaporator coil is a component of the cooling function of the air-conditioning system, but the air always first passes through the evaporator and then flows over the heater core.

The cabin air filter captures most of the dirt or other airborne particles, but some particles escape and can get lodged on to the evaporator. Over time, these particles build up on the fins and block the air flow through the evaporator, causing reduced air flow in the cabin and poor heating or cooling.

Function of the evaporator in heating mode

When the heater is turned on and the AC turned off, the compressor does not turn on and the evaporator is not cooled. When you press the AC button in heating mode, the compressor turns on and the evaporator cools and dries the air before it enters the heater core. This mode is useful for clearing fog from the windows.

11. Faulty HVAC module

Climate control module is the brain of the air-conditioning system in your Chrysler Grand Voyager, responsible for controlling all the components in the system. In rare cases, a fault in the climate control unit can cause the heater to stop functioning. This would require a scan tool to confirm correct operation.

12. Blown head gasket

The head gasket is responsible for providing the seal between the engine block and cylinder heads. Its purpose is to seal the combustion gases within the cylinders and to avoid coolant or engine oil leaking into the cylinders. Leaks in the head gasket can cause all sorts of problems in your Grand Voyager including poor heater performance. This is mostly common in older vehicles.

Leaking exhaust gases

A blown head gasket can cause the exhaust gases from the engine to enter the cooling system and plug the heater core. Clearing the air from the heater core will not help until the head gasket has been replaced.

Leaking coolant

A blown head gasket can cause coolant to leak into the combustion chambers and burn off. If your Grand Voyager is losing coolant, that means there is a leak somewhere or it is getting burned up inside the engine.

How to check if head gasket is leaking in Grand Voyager?

You don’t have to go to a workshop to check for a leaking head gasket in your Grand Voyager. There are test kits available in the market in which you just have to insert a tube filled with colored liquid in the radiator (in place of the radiator cap), and then start the engine. If the liquid changes color, then there is a leak in head gasket.

Switch on air recirculation mode

When the outside temperature drops too low, the heating performance may be reduced in Grand Voyager if the air conditioning system is set to outside air. To improve heating efficiency, it is recommended to switch on air recirculation mode. Don’t worry, there is no risk of suffocation, as the air recirculation mode still allows up to approximately 10 percent of the air coming from the air vents to be fresh air from the outside.

There are many reasons why the heater in your Chrysler Grand Voyager is not working properly. When looking for the reason, you should start with the most obvious causes: low coolant level or air in the cooling system, and clogged heater core.

In any case, it is advisable for laypersons to visit a workshop. A professional mechanic can swiftly diagnose the heating issue for you.

2001 Voyager transmission issues

I never knew there was a minivan forum until now. Kinda cool. But I did not find it under cool circumstances so maybe someone can please help me. 01 voyager 3.3 the van has 144,xxx miles on it. I have always taken the up most care of it flushing the fluids and oil ect. Well I seemed to have developed a lot of problems all of a sudden. It runs fine until is heats up then it will not go into first gear or it will sudden jolt from 1st to second while stoped, Drive alittle more then its stuck in limp mode. I pulled the codes and I am getting the following, p0601 int control module memory checksum error p0700 trans control sys malufunction p0720 output speed sensor circuit malufunction p0731 and p0732 gear ratio 1 & 2 incorrect It sounds to me to be electrical related cause I find it hard to believe a transmission would fail suddenly. Any help is greatly appreciated.

quick question, when was the last time you did a drop and fill and replaced the tranny fluid and filter?

10 months ago, Took it to my brother which is a mechanic, Had all fluids flushed and the fluid still red but It did smell hot after this occurred.

Did you mean Smelled hot or did you mean smelled burnt. Because with ATF+4 the smell doesn't mean anything. Just smell it directly from the bottle and you'll know.

It has a slight slight varnish smell after I limped home. fluid is still looking red good and I wanted to add, Pure mopar atf +4 was used in the flushing.

Ok, I been doing more research apparently these have solenoid pack issues. I can say the solenoid pack is original. Anyone else have a solenoid pack failure with similar codes?

Worth a shot I guess, search on the 4th gen forum on solenoid pack, or type in one of the codes and see what comes up. I'm pretty sure you are not the only one who had had codes like these come up

Well I also forgot to state speedometer goes all crazy, But it has been for some time. I am going to guess input output sensors. Not solenoid since solenoid your would loose all power from what im finding

Replace the speed sensor before you do anything else. The speed code, ratio code, and the malf code are likely from that. This does not sound like a solenoid pack fault, not yet, anyway. Thanks I will tear into it next 1-2 days let anyone know of the results in case anyone has a problem like this in the future. Again strange cause it only happens when it heats up. I am also going to inspect the wireing where they are subject to oil contamination.

thank you for the tsb. It seems the wire harness thickest part where it "T'S off directly under the solenoid pack which has such a small leak its not even enough to drip to ground has coated the heatshrink due to it being out of the plastic clamp fastened to the transmission. I had wire rot before on a Taurus SHO 99. It was bad wires were glued together and it did the same thing, Fine when cold. Heated up it went haywire.

LOL, Unbelieveable. Well get ready for the problem and what I believe it is. I got a new speed sensor. Took my van for a drive everything is going fine. Its a cooler day out so I had the windows down. All my trans codes come back on except the out speed sensor one. I thinking ok maybe it was just stored in the memory. Well everything is going fine, I turn the a/c on immediately the speedometer started acting crazy again and the trans clunks into 2nd. Crap. turn the a/c off put it in park then drive, Running fine again. Tried the a/c again same thing. Then I turned the radio on which I have amplified. The speedometer goes crazy again! So now Im boggled and stupefied at this point. Then it hits me, A dying alternator. Seems it has a hard time running at 14.4 expecially at idle but its doing a 13.8 running and a 13 when running stuff. Could this drop in 1 volt really make this van react like that?? LOL. I never seen a car so sensitive to voltage and Im almost positive this has to be it. The alternator is making a high pitched wine sound. Checked all the wires for rot, Found none.

Yea these vans are really sensitive to a voltage drop, any drop in voltage in these vans cause all kinds of electrical issues, which is called haunted vehicle syndrome. Usually the problem is the battery

13v is still very workable unless its not really 13v. I had a problem on my 3.3 I was trying to chase down years ago. I added ground straps from battery, body, alt frame, engine case, and ecu together. The problem I was after did not improve, however the trans started I shift better than it ever had. The wacky speedo especially suggests output speed sensor issue. Or perhaps wiring to it. The gear ratio error would also make sense from it. This is definitely electrical in my mind. Not meaning to rule out a solenoid pack but them most common issue with the pack is a leak.

Its absolutely electrical. Thank you for the update, I been reading my post every hour since my last post for any new ideas. The voltage is all over the place when you turn things on but the alternator is strong enough to run the engine at idle without the battery even with all dome lights on. I only checked for wire rot in the oil contaminated places. Wires look fine. I am going to cut into it further. I replaced the output speed sensor and all original codes came back on after I ran heavy amp pulling devices on the van. This van been a electrical nightmare. Blower motors terminals I had to replace 2 times now in six months cause of corrioson and heat, Rear speakers on the radio kill if its to loud when it comes on. Twinkleing lights. Random beeps just started happening aswell with no code change. But the alt started to whine, a day after the whine everything started to go to **** however voltage readings seems that maybe only a dioide or 2 may have died but the alt is still capable. I just don't get it. Im going to check for more wire rot in different places. But speedo is fine with it in park. Soon as I move it anywhere else even in neutral 0-5 act up with no draw, with anykind of power draw it goes nuts and the transmission acts all to **** only when the van has been run awhile 15 minutes in 80f temps. Stop all power consuming stuff all fine.

Check your battery by replacing with a know good one . If the battery can't smooth the ripple from the alternator you'll have all the electonic controls these vans rely on confused. Most electronic nighmares are battery, alternator or both. Make no assumptions. One diode out in the alternator means its bad. Capable? - maybe but bad just the same. And yes, it can take the battery with it.

I finally think I found the problem for sure. The alternator. Even though it still produces 13.8 volts all day Its putting out nearly 2.5volt AC Alternating current at idle with me testing it directly on the alternator output with ground terminal to alternator case. From what I read this vaule if over .5 volts you have a problem. Ill replace the ALT. Thank god. I tested wires for resistance, Took PCMS out and tested for resistance there. Ive never had a problem like this ever. So I hope this has helped anyone that may have similar electrical nightmares. Hi, hoping someone can help me out.

I have a Chrysler grand voyager 2.8crd 54 plate.

Went out to start the car today and nothing. Not even attempting to start. Car was starting and driving fine yesterday.

When I put key in ignition it goes through what I call the pre flight checklist... Basically all lights are on on the dash, all dials turn in a clockwise motion, then go back to start positions. All lights go off and car won't even try to turn over. After checking manual I see that the immobiliser light is on and stays on. I believe this is why the car will not turn over.

Can anyone tell me what could be causing this and what options I have please.?

Igor, do you know source in Russia which might be able to supply a transmission for me? At least you aren't that far away and it's easier to work with your country's customs too..

What is a vin.

Where is the VIN located?

The VIN can be found on the VIN plate located on the driver's side of the dashboard just below the windshield (1). The VIN can also be found on the driver-side doorframe label (2), as well as on documents related to the vehicle's registration, title and insurance.

WHAT DOES EACH CHARACTER MEAN?

A VIN is a Vehicle Identification Number. It is a 17-character alphanumeric identifier or a manufacturer’s serial number. Each character in the VIN number has a significant meaning. Together, they create a number that provides information about the vehicle and its unique history. Referencing the example to the right: 3 - Shows where the vehicle is built, FT - Designates the vehicle manufacturer, BE673 - Denotes the vehicle’s brand, engine size and type and other details, E - Vehicle Security Code, T - Shows Vehicle Year, R - Indicates which plant assembled the vehicle, 678452 - Displays serial number of the vehicle.

Rust on Rotors

That is normal. My OEM factory rotors look the same. BTW all rotors in boxes come with anti-corrosion rosin coatings that have to be cleaned off the brake pad contact surfaces before installation. The rest of the rosin coating will burn off with heat. You could buy a set of rotors and have the non-contact brake pad areas powder coated it if bothers you. Clean new brake rotors

I agree with FreddieF73 - I bought zinc-plated rotors and the only rust is on the face where the pads scrape - none on the hub or the hollow webbing. Rust on the face, where the pads scrape, IS normal. I have seen older, unplated discs where the rust completely fills the webbing on the discs so they don't cool properly. I never go cheap on brakes or tires - save money elsewhere.

Another thing: the premium MoPar rotors are balanced. The Value Line MoPar rotors are not. Almost all aftermarket rotors are NOT balanced!! Yes, you will notice it at high speeds.

I am glad to hear this. I don’t know why Chrysler are not as well known as other brands such as Mercedes, Caddi, Beemer, one thing for sure is that from Pacifica limited is already pretty Upscaled in interiors and features when compared to other Van. Especially when AWD is called, there is only Sienna and Pacifica, and coming from Sienna, I can tell for certain that the Pacifica Pinnacle feels more engaged, smoother, more seamless, quieter, more comfortable. I am glad to have found an Upscaled luxurious MiniVan as Pacifica. For a while, I thought we would not have such vehicle, especially luxurious and AWD back to the rotors and brakes, I also noticed that the Pacifica has great stoping power !!

Did you ask your dealer to use oem parts . There’s many levels and f rotors from entry , intermediate, premium rotors out there . Case in point , I don’t know what dealer, but I will say your bill for brake job, @dealer shop rate , will give you a idea of parts used .
