First of all our tour director, Donna was fantastic.  Best tour director I have ever had on several of my trips on Sun Fun Tours and Paramount Travel.  She was so organized and efficient when it came to doing everything, plus she had a great sense of humor. Sun Fun Tours is now my first choice in travelling to Tulalip as they have 4 day tours all the time an also include shopping at Alderwood Mall which is also a bonus. Thoroughly enjoyed our trip an can’t wait to go again in the fall I hope.

Marlene was great. She was very inclusive and did her best to please everyone. She was very knowledgeable and thoughtful. Cedric is a very skilled driver, courteous and contributed to the great atmosphere of the tour.

Brian and Steve, you two rock. I was so happy with the tour. They were outstanding, knowledgeable, friendly, safety conscious and had a great sense of humor. First trip with Sun Fun Tours, will definitely be booking more tours in the future!

Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed our trip to the Kootenays. Everything was well done on the COVID side of the trip. All the passengers followed the safety rules, what a wonderful group. Dennis and Anne made our trip and deserve a 10 for taking such good care of us.

Thank you so much for taking such good care of all of us. Brian is such a great tour guide. His TLC with the clients is nice to see. See you again soon on another tour.

Thank you for making this trip memorable. Enjoyed the commentary and the effort made for everyone’s comfort. Looking forward to ‘High Tea’. ????

Thank you so much Tour Guide Anne for providing a fun and relaxed atmosphere on the bus. Your stories and jokes were wonderful. You are a very kind and courteous person and you made the trip so memorable.

Your office staff are just soooo organized. Doug and I just love travelling on your tours. Your staff are efficient and reliable. Thank you for my $10 birthday coupon which I received on this last tour to Coeur d’Alene. Doug took me on that casino tour as part of my birthday gift. Perfect… My favourite casino. We definitely will be going on that tour again… And again!! Thank you.

Thank you so much for sending me a lovely brochure which I have posted in our building. I had such a wonderful trip with you recently that I’m planning my next!!!!!

Great Atlantic Experience was absolutely the best trip I have done, I had a great time and met some real nice people. I want to send special thanks to Shelley for arranging the wheel chair at the airports, it was a god send. Thanks to everyone who worked on this trip to make it so great.

One more perfect trip with Sun Fun!! Your company is so good at planning great itineraries with such a variety of destinations. We have enjoyed each and every trip with you.

I would just like to say thank you for the great tour my wife JoAnne and I just came back from.   We had a fabulous time on our trip to the Tualip Resort and I must commend our driver and tour guide Don, who not only was a great driver, a good guide and acted very professional at all times, along with a great sense of humor. This was our very first bus tour, and I must say it certainly won’t be our last. We look forward to traveling with your company again.

All you girls are just wonderful, you are always cheerful. You all must love your jobs because whenever I talk to any of you, you are always happy and more than willing to help answer any questions. Because of this I recommend you to all my friends, I tell them you are very friendly, professional and know your stuff. Not many companies are like you are, the other companies should take lessons.

Wanted to thank you for a very delightful “Christmas at Coeur d’Alene Tour” on Dec. 24, 2015. My first ever!!!!! Must admit Derryl, the tour guide was simply amazing and she made it enjoyable all the way there and back. What a delightful lady!!!! We had Roger, as our coach driver, he had excellent driving skills. Boy, did he get cheers from passengers for his excellent driving skills in winter conditions.

‘I’m pleased as punch’ with the Southern Hospitality tour recently arrived home from. You obviously put much thought and effort into the planning. It was so varied and entertaining. Enjoyed every moment – loved it.

Lloyd and I have been telling everyone about our trip, it was wonderful. We enjoyed every inch of the 11,000 kilometers (imperial measure vs metric LOL) we travelled with you and Bart at the helm.

Thank you again for all you do for us Shelley. You are AMAZING! (and Carol also) I must tell you that I love working together with you as you are so accommodating to your clients, and our tour! This is our 9th year….WOW!

I just wanted to let you know that was one of the best trips I have every been on. Stephen was a very good tour director and Bill was an awesome driver.

Driver Don Mclean and Tour director Derryl Lukinuk are always pleasant, attentive and courteous. They made the trip there and back fun and educational. Cindy Smith, Sun Fun Penticton office, is always cheerful and helpful. No matter how busy she is, she always has time for you.

“We will certainly choose your tours when we are again thinking of a trip. We have enjoyed past trips very much, and your company’s handling is second to none.”

“I want to send an extra thanks to you. I really appreciate everything extra you have done to help us. Your company will get lots of recommendations from my family and their friends that live in Penticton.”

Sun Fun Tours: Reviews

Positive experience: We had a blast. Cindy and Miles were just wonderful.

Fantastic experience: Our trip to Seattle was great. Our tour director, Cindy, was exceptional and everything went off like clockwork. The accommodations were top notch all the way, and our bus driver needs a medal for the way he got us through a detour and kept us almost on time for everything. Very happy with everything. Jim Edwards

Fantastic experience: This being my first trip with Sun Fun Tours, I was completely surprised. The two Cindy’s were so friendly and fun, the perks and hospitality both on and off the bus was amazing, and all in all, it was a wonderful experience for me. I will certainly be going on another trip with them. ????

Fantastic experience: I recently took a 4 day Tour to Tulalip Resort & Casino. It was a great trip in every way. The coach driver was excellent, the tour director was knowledgable, efficient and friendly and the resort and its staff were wonderful. I look forward to doing another trip soon!

Fantastic experience: We really enjoyed spending Christmas at Tulalip. The hotel was beautiful and the grounds were amazing. We had time to walk outside and enjoy all the wonderful lights.

5 solar eclipse activities to do with children

From building an eclipse viewer to using the sun to pop balloons, here's a child-friendly activity guide for April's eclipse

By Abigail Beall

6 April 2024

tour sun fun

There are plenty of fun eclipse activities to do with kids

Edwin Remsberg/Alamy

If you are planning to enjoy the total solar eclipse on 8 April with your children, here are a few activities you can do with them before and during the eclipse, to help them understand what causes a solar eclipse and get the most out of the experience.

1. Build an eclipse viewer

On the days leading up to the eclipse, you and your children can get excited about the big event by building an eclipse viewer . There are a few ways to do this – the first of which is a simple pinhole camera using two pieces of paper. Cut a hole in one piece of paper and cover it with aluminium foil, then poke a small hole in the foil. On the day of the eclipse, hold the paper up to let the sun beam through the hole and it will project a version of the eclipse onto a second piece of paper you place on the ground.

A slightly more complicated version involves a cereal or shoe box, placing paper at one end and cutting two holes in the other end. Over one of the two holes, you place some tin foil and, again, pierce it so that the sunlight can get through. More details on how to make both versions here .

Solar Eclipse 2024

On 8 April a total solar eclipse will pass over Mexico, the US and Canada. Our special series is covering everything you need to know, from how and when to see it to some of the weirdest eclipse experiences in history.

2. Build a solar eclipse model

Another activity that can be done ahead of the eclipse is building, or acting out, a model of the sun, moon and Earth to understand what a solar eclipse is . To build it, all you need is three sticks and three balls to place on top of the sticks. You can paint them or colour them in so that they resemble the sun, moon and Earth. Make sure the sun is bigger than the moon. Then, you can show your kids what an eclipse is by placing the sun in the centre, and moving Earth around the sun and the moon around Earth. When the three line up, with the moon in between the sun and Earth, we get a solar eclipse. When the moon is on the other side of Earth from the sun, we get lunar eclipses.

Your kids can also act out a solar eclipse. Give one of them a torch or flashlight, making them act as the sun, and ask them to shine the torch on a wall. The other, who is the moon, can move around until they block the torch light. They can both play around with moving forwards and backwards, to show why the distances between the moon, Earth and sun matter when it comes to eclipses.

We are working on some amazing ways to experience the forthcoming total solar eclipses in 2026 and 2027

3. Pop a balloon using sunlight

This is something that can be done on any sunny day. But on the day you are waiting for the total eclipse, you can show your kids how to use the power of sunlight to pop a balloon. You need a balloon and a magnifying glass for this activity. Blow up the balloon and then hold the magnifying glass up so that it magnifies the sunlight onto the balloon. Wait for a few minutes and, eventually, the balloon will pop. You can also make this more exciting by blowing up a white balloon inside a black one, and doing the same trick. The black balloon should pop, leaving the white balloon intact inside. You can use this to explain how black surfaces absorb sunlight, while light surfaces reflect them.

4. Play with shadows

On the day of the eclipse, while you are waiting for totality, the partial eclipse phase will last a few hours. You and your kids can get excited about the eclipse by noticing how shadows change, and playing around with this. If you have a tree nearby, look at the shadows it casts on the ground throughout the eclipse and you will see that they start to look like a sun with a bite taken out of it. This also works by crossing your fingers over each other and casting shadows on the ground. Another way to show the eclipse through shadows is using a colander, or anything with small holes in it. As the eclipse progresses, the shadows cast will start to take on the shape of the eclipse. You can punch a series of holes in a piece of paper to spell out a word or your kids’ names in these crescent shapes.

5. Draw shadows

This is another activity that can be done in the hours leading up to and after totality, again making the most of the interesting shadows created by a partially eclipsed sun. You can lay a big white piece of paper or sheet on the ground, and ask your kids to draw the shadows cast by different objects. If you do this at the start of the partial phase, and again closer to totality, they will be able to see how these shadows change as the eclipse progresses. You should notice that, in the lead-up to totality, shadows become much clearer as the amount of ambient light is reduced.

Sun 'n Fun celebrates 50 years with historic marker outside Florida Air Museum

tour sun fun

LAKELAND — Sun 'n Fun's 50th Aerospace Expo kicked off Tuesday , and while the event may last less than a week, its place in Polk County's history has been memorialized.

Sun 'n Fun held a ceremony in front of the Florida Air Museum on Tuesday morning to officially recognize the 50th anniversary of the fly-in. The Polk County Historic Commission has erected a marker along the walkway leading up to the museum.

"If you think about what has been created over these 50 years, there is no other place on Earth that has what we have here on this campus," Gene Conrad, Sun 'n Fun CEO and president, said. "There is nowhere else."

The Sun 'n Fun fly-in was founded by members of the Experimental Aircraft Association's Lakeland chapter in December 1974, according to Conrad. The first fly-in was called the Mid-Winter Sun 'n Fun in January 1975.

For this reason, this year's fly-in is the 50th, Conrad said, but the nonprofit organization will celebrate its 50th anniversary this December.

Polk County Manager Bill Beasley said the historic marker placed on the expo's grounds is the 32nd one in the county, with five more pending placement. These signs have been used to commemorate places such as historic school grounds, cemeteries and ethnic communities.

"When we place a historical marker, it's not really just about this place in and of itself. We strongly believe in educating the public about not just Florida's history, but Polk County's history," he said. "This us celebrating what's important in Polk County and the history of Polk County."

Guide: 2024 Sun 'n Fun Aerospace Expo: Concert, more warbirds and fireworks

Beasley said the event has contributed to creating a huge cultural and economic engine within the county. The event now draws tens of thousands of visitors from across the country and international guests.

Bill and Suzy Eickhoff, two Sun 'n Fun pioneers, shared some of their earliest memories volunteering for the fly-in. Eickhoff said she remembered when the City of Lakeland offered the organization land, but the volunteers had to clear it. The couple drove in from St. Petersburg to spend weekends clearing Palmetto roots and other brush by hand, working their way from north to south.

"This has been so amazing to see how it's grown," she said, getting choked up as she continued to speak. "I feel like a grandparent, I can't do the things that I used to do but I've watched the volunteers now and I'm so proud. The staff has been amazing."

Piper Aircraft Sun ‘n Fun Exhibit to Showcase New M700 FURY

M700 Fury

Lakeland, FL. , April 9, 2024 – Piper Aircraft invites all attendees to stop by and view the all-new, 300-knot capable M700 FURY, along with the latest avionics upgrades for the M350 and the commuter favorite Archer LX at Sun ‘n Fun in Lakeland, FL. All three aircraft will be on display painted alike using custom colors and designs created by their paint facility in Vero Beach, Florida, for the launch of the new flagship. Piper will also have the Seminole and Pilot 100i trainer class aircraft on static display at the show.

“It’s an exciting opportunity for us to kick off the year with our new M700 FURY painted in this special edition scheme designed specifically for the launch. For fun, we’ve also included matching schemes on our M350 and Archer LX factory demonstrators,” stated Ron Gunnarson, Vice President of Sales, Marketing & Customer Support at Piper Aircraft. “We look forward to seeing attendees come out to view our newest flagship, hear more about the updates we have as a company, and just talk airplanes.”

In addition to the Sun ‘n Fun aircraft lineup, Piper is proud to announce the latest system upgrade from Garmin for the M350, the only high-performance, pressurized piston aircraft available today. This latest system update was introduced on the M600 in 2023 and was certified on the new M700 FURY. It includes Garmin PlaneSync™ technology that provides wireless connectivity to your aircraft. This now enables the remote capability for charts and database updates as well as the ability to see key information about your aircraft from your mobile device. This upgraded software system highlights the new 3D SafeTaxi, expanding ground situational awareness with an advanced 3D depiction of the ground environment, including airport markers, buildings, and other position markings. In addition, this new software has enhancements for SVT, weather radar, navigation, flight planning, checklists, weight and balance calculation capabilities and more.

Piper Aircraft invites attendees to come out and view the aircraft lineup at Sun ‘n Fun this year, located at booth #MD24C in Lakeland, FL.

Kodiak 100

Daher Kodiak, TBM Announcements

At Sun 'n Fun Aerospace Expo in Lakeland, Florida on opening day,  Daher’s Aircraft Division announced the startup of increased production for the Kodiak 100 and Kodiak 900 utility aircraft at its manufacturing and final assembly facility in Sandpoint, Idaho.

Production targets for Kodiak aircraft are expected to rise to 25 in 2024, up from 18 in 2023.

At the same time, Daher is making the U.S. air show debut of its TBM 960 turboprop at Sun ‘n Fun. The company has a two-year backlog of orders for the aircraft. The company also is enhancing the TBM 960 2024 versions with a pilot inactivity function that automatically activates the HomeSafe emergency Autoland system after 30 min. if there is no pilot interaction with the aircraft’s systems. The system automatically lands the aircraft.

SNF 50 year logo

Sun ‘n Fun Aerospace Expo, which runs April 9 to 14, is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

The event has grown from a small fly-in for sport aviation enthusiasts in 1974 to Florida’s largest annual convention.

The event is expected to draw 200,000 attendees, more than 3,100 registered aircraft, 3,000 volunteers and a record number of exhibitors—563 exhibitors in 805 exhibit spaces to showcase products and services.

Daher's Nicolas Chabbert

Daher's EcoPulse Demonstrator

Daher's EcoPulse hybrid distributed propulsion demonstrator has conducted 14 "e-flights" since the first e-flight in November 2023, Nicolas Chabbert, senior vice president of Daher's aircraft division, told reporters in a press conference during Sun 'n Fun Aerospace Expo.

The aircraft, under its Phase 3 testing, has accumulated 10 hr. on the APU and 6 hr. on the high-voltage battery pack.

The company will begin the conceptual design of the aircraft later this year. The next steps are to evaluate the environmental impact on noise and how one can control the differential power provided by the engines. Phase 4 testing will look at the hybrid-electric systems.

The company must also determine how to produce it.

Daher continues to plan for a 2027 in-service date, but it is not an easy certification path, he says.

While Daher knows how to certify aircraft, certifying a high-voltage electrical system remains an unknown path.

Cessna 182 interior

Textron Aviation Interior Upgrades On Display

Textron Aviation is showcasing its Cessna Skyhawk 172, Cessna Turbo Skylane 182 and Cessna Turbo Stationair 210 HD with enhanced interiors for the first time at Sun 'n Fun Aerospace Expo. The company, which builds the models at its Independence, Kansas, facility, began deliveries of the aircraft with upgraded interiors in 2024.

The aircraft include all-new seats, power headset jacks at every seat, A and C USB charging ports at every seat, updated black instrument panels, side and cell phone pockets, integrated overhead air conditioning and other features. The company also is offering a variety of new exterior schemes.

Piper M700 Fury

Piper M700 Fury's Public Debut

Piper Aircraft is making the public debut of its new single-engine Piper M700 Fury turboprop at Sun ‘n Fun Aerospace Expo with first customer deliveries to begin in a week, officials say.

In February, the Vero Beach, Florida-based manufacturer announced the Piper M700 and received FAA type certification for the aircraft, which outperforms and replaces the Piper M600 turboprop.

The company plans to deliver about 50 M700s in 2024, officials say.  The base price for the aircraft is $4.15 million with a typically equipped price of $4.3 million.

Cirrus Vision Jet

The 'Cirrus One' Program

Cirrus Aircraft unveiled its new "Cirrus One" concierge aircraft management service for  Cirrus SR Series and Vision Jet owners in the Orlando, Dallas and Phoenix areas.

The services can be tailored to an owner’s needs, and can include professional pilot services, aircraft maintenance, aircraft management, hangar space, insurance coordination and concierge services, such as ground transportation coordination, hotel and dining reservations, aircraft handling and cleaning and other services, the company notes.

Tecnam aircraft

Tecnam's Robust Training Market

Tecnam Aircraft is showcasing its line of Italian-built aircraft at Sun ‘n Fun.

The training market is robust, Tecnam officials say. In March, for example, French training facility Mermoz Academy, based in Tours, France, expanded its fleet with the acquisition of 10 Tecnam P-Mentor trainers.

Sun ‘n Fun Aerospace Expo, which opened April 9 in Lakeland, Florida,  is celebrating its 50 th anniversary. So far, ticket sales are 30% ahead of a year ago at the same time, and 2023 sales were 30% higher than the year before. The number of exhibitors and exhibit spaces are at a record high.

7 fun places to watch the solar eclipse in N.J.

  • Updated: Apr. 08, 2024, 2:59 p.m. |
  • Published: Apr. 08, 2024, 7:01 a.m.

  • Rob Jennings | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

The solar eclipse will darken the sky for a few unforgettable minutes Monday and much of New Jersey is eagerly awaiting a glimpse.

For those who want to experience the eclipse with a group , special viewing events are being held throughout the state — sort of like the astronomy version of Super Bowl watch parties. (See a list of seven unique events below.)

About 90% of the sun will be blocked by the moon for a brief period in the late afternoon in New Jersey.

“Maximum obscuration will occur between 3:23 p.m. and 3:26 p.m. depending on location in New Jersey,” according to state Department of Environmental Protection officials.

The moon will begin to cross over the sun in the sky around 2:09 p.m., with the blockage ending around 4:35 p.m. At the maximum coverage, the sun is expected to look like a thin crescent moon shining in the afternoon sky.

Keep in mind that “viewing of the solar eclipse should only be done while using specialized eclipse viewing glasses,” state officials warned.

Here are some spots in New Jersey to view the eclipse:

High Point State Park

One obvious viewing choice is High Point State Park in Sussex County, which offers New Jersey’s highest elevation at 1,803 feet.

High Point, with an anticipated 93.09% obscuration of the sun during the eclipse, is among more than two dozen state parks where you can view the eclipse out in nature, according to the state Department of Environmental Protection.

High Point State Park is expecting a large number of visitors to view the eclipse, the park’s website said. Park hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and public restrooms are limited this time of year.

The High Point Monument on top of the mountain’s summit is closed for the season.

Visitors are asked to only park in designated areas and not pull off on the grass, which are saturated due to recent heavy rains, park officials said.

Cape May-Lewes Ferry

The Cape May-Lewes Ferry , which crosses the Delaware Bay, is touting two, regularly-scheduled rides on Monday as Solar Eclipse Sailings .

“Get ready for an extraordinary experience! On April 8th, 2024, you have the opportunity to witness the Solar Eclipse from a unique perspective,” the ferry company says on its website.

“During our regularly scheduled 2:30 pm crossing from Cape May to Lewes (Delaware), or our 2:45 pm crossing from Lewes to Cape May, a partial eclipse will be visible from our upper decks, weather permitting,” the ferry says.

Reserved seating is not being offered.

Liberty Science Center

Liberty Science Center in Jersey City is hosting what it describes as “New Jersey’s Largest Astronomy Party” on Monday.

“On that day, the sun will be 91.2% covered in a near-total eclipse. You won’t see anything like this again until 2044,” it says.

The Great Eclipse celebration will begin at 1 p.m., three hours after the science center opens for the day.

Free solar viewing glasses will be provided with every admission ticket. There will be, weather permitting, from eight to 10 telescopes on the back lawn, with the planetarium team offering guidance.

Starting at 1:30 p.m, the science center will offer a webcast from NASA, and those from other science sites, enabling viewers to watch the eclipse from various locations across its path.

Rutgers University

In a unique twist, two Rutgers University English professors will be reading “Paradise Lost,” by famed 17th Century poet John Milton, from 9:30 a.m. until approximately 6 p.m. on the New Brunswick campus.

“Paradise Lost” features allusions to eclipses, along with imagery of light and darkness, Rutgers officials said.

Students, faculty, other employees and members of the public are invited to join professors Ann Baynes Coiro and Brad Evans in the reading, which will take place in front of Murray Hall, near George Street in New Brunswick.

“You can drop by to listen,” Evans said. “And anyone can get in the queue to read a verse paragraph.”

Jenny Jump State Forest

The United Astronomy Clubs of New Jersey , which has an observatory at Jenny Jump State Forest in Warren County, is hosting a Total Solar Eclipse Event , from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday. Admission is free, but registration is requested due to limited parking.

“We are pleased to provide access to solar viewing equipment for all attendees. Solar glasses will also be available for purchase at the observatory for your convenience,” the organization says on its website.

Organizers have a backup plan if the weather does not cooperate.

“In the event of adverse weather conditions, we will provide a live stream from a location with clear skies so that you can still witness this celestial wonder from the comfort of our observatory,” the group said.

Jenny Jump State Forest is located at 333 State Park Road in Hope.

Gateway National Recreation Area

The U.S. National Park Service is touting a Sandy Hook Partial Solar Eclipse Watch Party , free of charge, from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday in Sandy Hook at Parking Lot E.

“Although Sandy Hook is not in the path of totality, we do expect to experience a partial eclipse. The rangers will have eclipse safety glasses and Junior Ranger Eclipse Explorer books and badges available for visitors. Remember to bring beach chairs and sunscreen,” organizers said.

Belleplain State Forest

Belleplain State Forest in Cape May County is touting a hike organized by employees to the park’s athletic field for eclipse viewing, according to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

Hikers will meet at the Belleplain office at 2 p.m. The state forest is located at 1 Henkinsifkin Road in Woodbine.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

Sun 'n Fun Aerospace Expo underway in Lakeland: What you need to know

Sun 'n fun aerospace expo begins in lakeland.

Organizers are expecting large crowds at the Sun 'n Fun Aerospace Expo, which is celebrating its 50th year.

LAKELAND, Fla. - The 50th Annual Sun 'n Fun Aerospace Expo is underway through April 14 in Lakeland . The flying-in attracts aerial enthusiasts from around the world and organizers are expecting another big crowd this year.

The week-long fly-in and airshow is held at Lakeland Linder International Airport at 4075 James C. Ray Drive.

This year's edition is extra special for one air force pilot who's flying in the airshow.

"Very few people are born knowing what they want to do, but I grew up knowing I wanted to fly," said Chad Smith, a Lakeland native who grew up going to Sun 'n Fun Air Expos. "The big jet demo teams. Those are always very inspirational. The Blue Angels and Thunderbirds."

It's where his military story started. After taking flight lessons at Lakeland Linder in high school and getting his pilot's license at 17, he then enlisted in the Air Force, at the air show, where he was an aircraft mechanic for seven years. At this year's event, he'll be flying with his Fairfield KC135 Demo Team this week -- a military aircraft that does aerial refueling, cargo and evacuation.

"It feels very, very weird to be doing this because I remember myself as the kid who wanted to do it and if I can inspire somebody – another eight year old out here watching the show – that's the goal," said Smith.

Thousands of aviation enthusiasts flocked to Lakeland to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the second largest air show in the U.S. This year is all about celebrating the 2,900 volunteers who make this week-long event happen. For Smith, it's a truly full circle moment.

"Watching the planes and being around people really passionate about aviation makes me feel at home," said Smith.

Smith will be performing on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday where they will be doing an air refueling demonstration.

Sun ’n Fun Aerospace Expo is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion of aviation education.

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.

tour sun fun

Duration: 2 hours

Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing

This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.

Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.

Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.

Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.

Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

Culture Shock Rating

We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.

You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.

Physical Rating

Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

These tours have very limited physical activity. Usually climbing in and out of the transport provided, walking through sites, markets etc included in the itinerary.

These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.

These tours involve a bit of physical activity from walking up and down hills in the destination you're travelling in or the surrounding areas. Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.

These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.

Be prepared for some serious physical activity. These tours are our most challenging and involve some serious walking, hiking or bike riding. Can involve step climbs by foot or pedal and some challenging public transport options in the destination you are travelling.

Luxury Rating

Some trips are like a stroll on the beach, while others have you trekking alpine passes. Some of you thrive on camping out on the savannah, while others may prefer a hot shower and a comfortable bed in a lodge. Follow the grading systems below to find the right trip for you.

To help you choose the trip that's right for you, we've broken all of our trips down into four service levels. Measuring the comfort level of the accommodation and transport. So whether you're travelling on a budget and want to save money by using public transport, or prefer upgraded accommodation and are happy to pay a little more, then we have a level for you.
