Cruising Solo? List of Every Cruise Ship that Has Solo Cabins

J. Souza

It may not seem fair, but solo cruisers have to pay extra for the person they are not bringing on the cruise.

With a charge known as the single supplement fee, cruise lines charge the same rate as if the cabin has two people staying in it.  This means that per-person-charge should be doubled to get the actual price.

It makes financial sense for the cruise lines but makes it harder for single travelers to justify going on a cruise alone when they have to foot the bill for someone who is not even there.

Cruise lines have always operated on a double-occupancy business model and staterooms are typically configured for two guests.

I get asked all the time, “Which cruise ships have solo cabins?”

Thankfully, there are now many cruise ships with cabins made just for solo cruisers, with more newer ships adding this feature.

These solo cabins — sometimes called studio cabins — do not have the single supplement charge, giving lone cruise enthusiasts a level playing field.

If you want to cruise solo, this list is for you.

*This article has been updated since its original publish date.  It will stay updated as new ships with solo cabins are added to cruise lines.

Cruise ships with solo cabins

We have compiled a list of every mainstream cruise ship that has solo cabins.

Keep in mind that some cruise lines do not have cabins for single travelers.  For instance, Carnival, Princess, and Disney do not currently operate any ships with solo cabins .

Also, in most cases solo cabins are interior staterooms, with some occasional ocean view cabins available.

Royal Caribbean ships with studio cabins

studio solo cabin royal caribbean

Royal Caribbean has solo cabins on 12 cruise ships.  Their accommodation options include an inside studio stateroom, virtual balcony staterooms, and a super studio ocean view stateroom with a balcony. These rooms vary in size from 101 to 199 square feet.

Harmony of the Seas is the only Oasis-class vessel with studio cabins, and all of the Quantum-class ships with the line have cabins for solo travelers.  Virtual views in some interior cabins have vertical TV screens that simulate a view outside the ship.  The new Icon of the Seas does not have solo cabins.

Norwegian Cruise Line Ships with Solo Cabins

cruise ship studio cabin

Norwegian was one of the first mainstream cruise lines to introduce solo cabins to their ships. The studio cabins on these ships are about 100 sq. feet and come with a double bed.

The idea with Norwegian Epic was such a hit that the line kept integrating solo cabins into its Breakaway-class vessels.

Studios on Norwegian ships also come with access to a special lounge for single cruisers, and these solo cabins sell out pretty fast when bookings open.

Porthole Magazine has crowned Norwegian as the “Best Cruise Line for Solo Travelers” for 6 years in a row.

*Norwegian Epic has more solo cabins that any other cruise ship at sea.

MSC Cruises ships with solo cabins

MSC studio cabin

A select few MSC ships have studio cabins.  While the typical size bed in these cabins is a twin-size, many of these staterooms offer 130 square feet of space.    The couch doubles as a bed, maximizing the space in the already fairly spacious stateroom by industry standards.

Celebrity Cruises ships with solo cabins

Celebrity cruises solo cabins

The solo cabins on some Celebrity Edge-class vessels are a whopping 140 square feet.   Some of these single cabins can also be booked as twins as they have sofa beds for a second person.

The solos cabins on Edge-class ships with Celebrity are located on forward deck 6. They are the same size as the other Infinite Verandah cabins except without the couch.

*Celebrity Silhouette is a Solstice-class vessel that was recently retrofit with the solo cabins.

Holland America Line ships with solo cabins

Solo cabin on Holland America ship

Holland America offers solo cabins on just a handful of ships. The square footage available to solo cruisers ranges from 127 to 172.  They are about identical to regular ocean view cabins and are generally located forward on the Main Deck.

Cunard cruise ships with solo cabins

There are currently three ships in Cunard’s fleet with a fourth being added in 2024. Queen Mary 2 had 15 single cabins added to the vessel during a recent dry dock. The area now used for solo cabins was formerly part of the casino and photo gallery on board.

Virgin Voyages’ solo cabins

Interior solo cabin on Virgin Voyages ship

Virgin has built their recent ships with solo cruisers in mind.    The solo cabins are over 100 sq. feet and are mostly interior, with a few that have forward-facing sea views.

Spirit of Adventure cruise ship with Saga Cruises

There are two ocean cruise ships in Saga’s fleet and both have plenty of solo cabins for cruise passengers to choose from.   The UK-based cruise line caters to passengers 50 and older on its 1,000-passenger vessels.

There are four different types of solo cabins available:

  • Standard single cabin with balcony
  • Superior single cabin with balcony
  • Deluxe single with balcony
  • Single suite with balcony

Oceania solo cabins

cruise ship studio cabin

Luxury line, Oceania, has also embraced solo cruise travel, now with four ships in the fleet that cater to cruisers traveling alone.    Oceania’s new ship, Vista, debuted in 2023 and also has solo cabins.

Final thoughts

Even if you go on a cruise by yourself in a standard cabin, you will not have to pay port fees and gratuities for the second person.

And with the high demand for studio cabins, you should always at least compare the price of a standard room with the solo cabin to see if you’re actually saving a substantial sum.

My Personas

Code: ∅.

I spent 5 nights on a cruise with entire decks designed for solo travelers, and it was one of the best sailing experiences I'd ever had

  • I stayed in a 100-square-foot studio during my six-day solo cruise aboard the Norwegian Getaway .
  • I was surrounded by fellow solo travelers and had no trouble meeting others on the ship.
  • The cruise line planned everything long before I boarded, removing the solo-travel stress.

I booked a 100-square-foot studio aboard the Norwegian Getaway for my six-day solo trip.

cruise ship studio cabin

Earlier this year, I had time to take a vacation but didn't want to spend a ton of money or have to fly. So I searched online for cruises departing from New York City and landed on a six-day voyage aboard the Norwegian Getaway .

I didn't have anyone to travel with since the trip was so last minute, but I didn't let that get in my way. Four days before departure, I booked a 100-square-foot studio cabin that Norwegian Cruise Line designed and built for solo travelers ages 21 and older.

Here's what the experience was like.

Passengers traveling in the cruise's studios don't have to worry about paying a single-traveler supplement.

cruise ship studio cabin

I booked the Getaway's last available studio, 11505 on deck 11, directly through the cruise line for $700, paying an additional $283 in taxes and service charges.

The rate for the studio included WiFi, an unlimited drink package, one specialty dining meal, and a $50 voucher to put toward a port excursion.

But if I were traveling with another person, it would've made more sense to book an inside stateroom. The price likely would've been lower per person, and the room itself would've been larger.

But Norwegian, like so many other cruise lines, bases its stateroom rates on double occupancy and charges solo travelers a single supplement to stay in them alone.

Because I didn't want to pay an extra fee and didn't have anyone with whom I could split the stateroom cost, I went ahead with the smaller studio.

All the studios are in the same area, and guests need a key card to access this section of the ship.

cruise ship studio cabin

The Getaway's 59 studios are toward the front of the ship and divided between decks 10 and 11.

To get to my accommodation, I had to use my key card to access the area where all the studios are. This extra line of security made me feel safe and secure staying by myself.

From the moment I entered the studio area, I knew I was in for something special. The hallways feature blue, green, yellow, and red lights.

Because these studios are tucked away and somewhat secluded from busy parts of the ship, both my room and the area outside it were extremely quiet. The only noise I heard was the cabin steward vacuuming in the adjacent studio and hallway.

I think the Getaway's studios are more stylish than its staterooms, though I do wish my cabin had exterior views.

Unlike the Getaway's inside staterooms, which have similar decor to its ocean-view and balcony staterooms, the studios are sleek, stylish, and futuristic inside. For example, the panels along two sides of the full-size bed are covered in white cushions and backlit by LED strip lights.

My studio had a round window with a one-way view of the corridor, but I wish I had an exterior window or a small balcony . Fortunately, I don't suffer from seasickness, but passengers who do may benefit from having a view of the outside scenery .

My studio had various places where I could store my belongings.

cruise ship studio cabin

The tiny cabin featured two wardrobes with handles that doubled as towel racks, a pullout trash can, and a bedside ottoman that I could use as a desk chair.

The small bathroom was right by the studio's entrance.

cruise ship studio cabin

It had a sink, an all-glass shower with tesserae tiles, and a toilet.

I haven't seen any cruise line besides Norwegian build lounges exclusively for solo travelers. I loved it but wish the bar stayed open later.

cruise ship studio cabin

Open 24/7, the Getaway's two-story studio lounge features an ultramodern design with color-changing LED lights on the ceiling and an oval-shaped mezzanine with cozy banquettes.

The first floor has a speakeasy bar, a vending machine that serves wine, and a self-service refreshment station with coffee, juice, and water. When I was there, the lounge also had a lot of snacks like Danishes, croissants, chicken sandwiches, tuna sandwiches, pound cakes, and cookies.

The bar in the studio lounge was open daily between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., but I wish its hours spanned a bit longer. I rarely saw any other travelers there, even though the studios were sold out. It would've been great to have at least one event in that space at the beginning of the cruise to meet fellow solo travelers.

On disembarkation day, I would've loved to grab breakfast in the lounge. But I noticed that there were no refreshments available.

Because Norwegian planned the entire itinerary, I didn't have to worry about any trip logistics.

cruise ship studio cabin

Cruising is a convenient, cost-effective way to ease into solo travel.

Norwegian took care of all the logistics — including meals, onboard events, and exciting excursions — before I even boarded the ship. All I had to do was show up.

Dining alone is a common concern, but most cruise lines seat solo passengers together or put them at tables with extra space, which makes it easy to meet people.

I was fine eating by myself. Initially, I thought it would be awkward , but it wasn't.

While waiting for my food to arrive, I wrote in my journal, organized photos and videos on my phone, posted on social media, and struck up conversations with the crew and neighboring diners.

The ship had so many onboard activities and offerings that I didn't even feel like I was traveling alone.

cruise ship studio cabin

Each evening, I got a copy of the Freestyle Daily , the cruise line's printed newsletter. It was filled with information about the ship's activities, including a daily gathering for solo travelers in a casual setting.

During the cruise, there were also meetups for veterans, LGBTQ people, and people between 18 and 25 years old. I also spent a large amount of time enjoying the adults-only areas, such as the Thermal Suite, Vibe Beach Club, and the casino.

After this trip, I won't hesitate to sail alone with Norwegian and other cruise lines.

cruise ship studio cabin

Sure, I would've loved more activity at the studio-lounge bar and a window with an ocean view, but all in all, my first stay in a Norwegian studio was superb.

This trip gave me time to relax and prioritize myself without worrying about anyone else.

I found it liberating to set my own schedule, explore ports at my own pace, and indulge in self-care. I dined whenever I wanted, didn't have to coordinate schedules with anyone , and never worried about saving seats at onboard performances.

I didn't feel sad or lonely traveling by myself. After all, I was surrounded by thousands of people on the ship and had an easy time staying busy.

Norwegian Epic Studio Stateroom

Norwegian Epic Studio Staterooms Can Actually Be a Good Deal

It’s all about “doubles.” Double Dutch, double trouble, double whammy and when it comes to cruising, the ever-present double occupancy.

If you are new to solo cruising or if it’s your umpteenth go at it, you probably have run into the dreaded Single Supplement. People cruise and travel solo for a variety of reasons, from business to a divorce celebration.

On average, almost all cruise lines…almost all of the time…charge a solo passenger 200% of the base cruise fare. Or even worse, they double-charge for the port fees and taxes!

Norwegian Epic Studio Stateroom

Norwegian Epic Studio Staterooms are Amazing

While you can do your homework or ask a travel agent to do it for you, it’s a necessary evil to closely monitor cruise line pricing to “catch” a deal with a reduced single supplement.

It does happen on occasion. When faced with a plethora of unsold cabins on a particular sailing, a cruise line will reduce the supplement anywhere from 175% down to 25%. They do this to fill the ship. A less than full ship means less tips for their crew, less onboard revenue for the ship.

Until Norwegian Epic was launched in 2010, there was no option for the solo cruise passenger but to reserve a double occupancy cabin and pay the prevailing rate. Then came forward-thinking Norwegian Cruise Lines and their very innovative studio cabins.

Weighing in at a “whopping” 100 square feet, it sure sounds like it’s way too small for anything but a walk-in closet.

Not so. Devised by an actual yacht design company, the one hundred and twenty-eight Studio cabins feature a full-size bed, flat panel TV, a “window” to the corridor (they are all inside staterooms), a desk, sink, shower and separate lavatory. There is ample storage space, too. Take a tour with me…

One really cool feature of the Studio Stateroom is the private key-card access to the two-story Studio Lounge. Comfortably furnished with plush sofas and chairs, you can enjoy 24 hour self-service coffee machine, watch TV or have an cocktail during their own exclusive “Happy Hour.”

NCL Epic Studio Lounge

The Studio Lounge is a big reason to try this solo experience. That, and just staying in something so unique and kitsch as the Studios. But book early. The Studios have become very popular and with only 128 of them, they sell out seriously fast. Especially if you don’t want one with an adjoining door.

NCL Epic Studio cabin sink and shower area

Besides the Norwegian Epic, the newer Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Escape also have Studio Staterooms with 59, 59 and 82, respectively.

Hi Mike, Your questions are very serious ones so I suggest that you or your travel agent contact the cruise line directly. Their phone number is 1-800-327-7030. If needed, ask for a supervisor to confirm. My feeling is that for medical reasons you would be allowed to bring the water needed for your machine and possibly they could bring in a portable refrigerator. Keep in mind that the solo staterooms are super small and there may not be enough space for a refrigerator. Sometimes it’s less expensive to pay the single supplement on a double occupancy stateroom than for a studio. Please call the cruise line to confirm the equipment and water. I’d hate to give out incorrect information. Thank you for sharing your important question. Sherry

These cabins, at an average size of 100 square feet, are designed and priced with the solo traveler in mind. MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises offers interior and balcony solo cabins for single cruisers on its Meraviglia-class ships: the MSC Meraviglia, Bellissima, Grandiosa, Virtuosa and the newest vessel in the fleet, MSC Euribia. The second-newest ship, MSC World Europa, has 28 cabins – 10 Studio Interior and 18 Studio Ocean View staterooms – designed specifically for solo travelers. MSC World America, set to debut in 2025, will also feature the solo studio staterooms.

During voyages with MSC Cruises , single cruisers are invited to a complimentary, hosted cocktail party to mix and mingle with other solo travelers. The daily program is also an excellent source to discover additional activities, entertainment and opportunities to meet other cruisers. You'll have onboard special events like the themed 70s-inspired Flower Party and the White Party, where the ship is decked out in festive white decor and guests don their best white attire. Once on board the ship, solo cruisers will have countless options to engage and socialize with other travelers. When it comes to dining with Royal Caribbean , make a reservation at the Japanese restaurant Teppanyaki for an entertaining meal with new friends, or join fellow foodies for the intimate Chef's Table experience (the dining venues vary by ship). Singles can also participate in onboard activities like trivia contests, drink seminars, escape rooms, dance classes and pool parties.

If you need more thrills to stay busy and to meet people, Royal Caribbean's ships feature world-class shows and entertainment alongside adrenaline-pumping rides and attractions. Since May 2015, the Norwegian Cruise Line charges US$7,95 for room service dining. This is an extra service charge implemented fleetwide (including on the NCL Epic ship). Passengers exempted from the new (uncommon for the industry) room service fee are only the occupants of “The Haven” suites. Still, as an exception, all passengers can order (for free) their room-service morning coffee and Continental Breakfast. After implementing the new service charge, NCL upgraded the room service menu, adding more hot food items for Breakfast and a wider food & drinks selection (available for ordering 24 hours a day).

7 types of cruise ship balcony cabins explained.

Balcony cabins offer a wonderful opportunity for enjoying views in privacy.

Imagine starting your day with a room service breakfast, watching the approach to a Caribbean island as the sun rises over the horizon from the privacy of your balcony. Or perhaps you prefer ending your day with a cocktail, as your cruise ship glides through the calm evening waters of the Norwegian fjords.

Such moments are part of the allure of booking a balcony cabin on a cruise vacation. Although balcony cabins are the most common type of stateroom sold on most modern cruise ships, there is substantial variation within the category.

If you’re comparing cruise ship cabins ahead of making a booking, it’s important to understand that not all balcony cabin grades are the same.

Regular Balcony Cabins

Glance up at the hotel-style exterior of most modern cruise liners and you’ll see mostly regular balcony cabins. They are located along the side of the vessel, generally on the decks between the main decks inside the ship and the pool deck(s) on top.

Most balcony cabins are a similar size to a regular inside or oceanview cabin but with the addition of a private outdoor space with a small table and chairs. Some larger balcony cabins may include a sofa or sofabed, and possibly sun loungers on the balcony.

They offer a good balance of privacy and views, allowing you to enjoy the scenery without leaving your room.

These are especially appealing in destinations such as Alaska and the Norwegian fjords, in which the scenery outside the ports of call is a major part of the experience.

Aft-Facing Balcony Cabins

Aft-facing balcony cabins are located at the back of the ship. These cabins provide expansive views of the ship’s wake and the sea stretching out behind you.

The balconies in these cabins are often larger than those of regular balcony cabins, giving you more space to relax. “Essentially, you may end up paying a similar price as someone who books a balcony on the side of the ship, but get much more living space on your private veranda,” said Matt Hochberg on Royal Caribbean Blog .

However, the motion at the aft can sometimes be more noticeable, which may affect those sensitive to seasickness . Depending on the ship, there may also be an issue with privacy if the balconies overlook an aft pool, although there should be less noise from outside the door as far fewer people will walk past.

Aft-facing balconies can offer a fantastic experience, but study the deck plan first to avoid nasty surprises.

Cruise blogger Ilana from Life Well Cruised said “the incredible view of the ship’s wake and the open ocean can be hypnotizing and even therapeutic” but that “you may hear and feel the vibration of the cruise ship” along with noise from any bars or pool areas.

She also warned that due to their popularity, the price can be higher than other balconies and they are among the first staterooms to sell out.

Forward-Facing Balcony Cabins

While balconies at the back of cruise ships are relatively common, balconies at the front are far less normal. Perhaps more than any other grade of balcony cabins, forward-facing rooms offer significant pros and cons.

View of the approach into Lisbon from a forward-facing balcony on P&O Britannia cruise ship.

P&O Cruises offers a handful of forward-facing balcony cabins on its flagship vessel Britannia. As with aft cabins, the balconies and rooms are more spacious than average.

Views can be sensational, essentially offering a captain’s eye view on progress through the ocean. Sail-ins and sailaways are also excellent times to use the balcony, especially on approach to bridges, narrow channels, or other landmarks.

However, strong winds while sailing mean it’s not always possible to open the balcony door due to air pressure, and using the balcony while at sea isn’t the most enjoyable experience.

That being said, if you’re booking a port-focused cruise in the summer sun, a forward-facing balcony could be a wonderful experience.

Outer Promenade Balcony Cabins

On ships with promenade decks, it’s become a trend in cruise ship design to offer balcony cabins that overlook the promenade. Depending on the ship, these can be at eye level, or slightly set back.

Outer promenade cabins don't offer much privacy but they offer other benefits including more space ... [+] inside.

As with obstructed view balconies, these tend to be cheaper, but they lack the privacy typically associated with a balcony cabin. Even so, they are a good value option to enjoy easy access to outdoor space without paying a hefty price.

Cruise YouTuber Emma Cruises spent a week in a ‘conservatory mini-suite’ on P&O’s Iona and commented that the lack of privacy may bother some. She recommended the grade for people cruising solo or anyone wanting to make new friends, as people walking along the promenade often stopped to chat.

Inner Promenade Balcony Cabins

On some of the world’s largest cruise ships, many balcony cabins overlook the ship’s interior promenade rather than the ocean.

On MSC World Europa , half of the ship’s main deck is outside, with almost 200 promenade balcony cabins along both sides of the outdoor portion leading to an open aft deck.

While they offer varying degrees of sea views, such balcony cabins provide a unique vantage point for people-watching and enjoying the ship’s entertainment and activities.

On MSC World Europa cruise ship, almost 200 balcony cabins overlook the inner promenade.

These cabins can be noisier due to their location but offer a different kind of cruise experience.

Obstructed View Balcony Cabins

Obstructed view balcony cabins are typically located where parts of the ship’s structure, such as lifeboats or equipment, block the view from the balcony. Often these are located on the lowest deck of balconies, with lifeboats blocking some of the view.

On some of the largest vessels, some balconies may be set back slightly from the edge of the vessel. In this case, the balconies offer an unobstructed view in front of the balcony, but have a narrower field of view.

While you compromise a little on the view, obstructed view balcony cabins are a more affordable option for those who want a balcony experience without paying a premium price. More often than not, the view is still impressive, but the degree of obstruction varies, so it’s worth checking specifics before booking.

Suites represent the top tier of cruise ship accommodations, offering spacious living areas, enhanced amenities, exclusive perks, and in most cases, significant outdoor space.

They come in various configurations, from junior suites to grand suites, each varying considerably in size and amenities.

The most lavish suites will include vast balcony space, often with sun loungers and hot tubs. However, they are often located at the front or back of the ship, so consider any potential issues with motion sickness or wind before committing to the expensive booking.

A California mother was purportedly scammed out of going on a Carnival cruise with her children that she had planned a year in advance — and initially lost $900 — after she fell prey to a fraudster, according to a new report.

Brittany Paine, of Castaic, was set to voyage to Ensenada, Mexico, over Mother’s Day weekend, but her plans were shockingly wrecked when her Carnival booking was canceled just days before, leaving her on the verge of tears.

The sea-sickening scam began when she called a number for what she thought was Carnival about a cabin upgrade and spoke to someone who claimed they were a company rep, according to NBC 4 LA.

Brittany Paine, of Castaic, was set to voyage to Ensenada, Mexico over Mother’s Day weekend but her plans were shockingly wrecked when her Carnival booking was canceled just days before, leaving her on the verge of tears.

“We noticed here that you have an outstanding balance on your upcoming cruise for $294,” she said the so-called rep told her, “and you will not be able to board if that’s not taken care of.”

She paid the “deck fee” and hung up, but instantly grew suspicious and dialed another number for Carnival. An actual Carnival rep on the phone this time told her a “deck fee” didn’t exist.

“She said, ‘No, ma’am, that was a scam,’” Paine told NBC 4 LA this week. “’We wouldn’t have charged you a deck fee. Go ahead and dispute that with your bank.’”

She disputed the charge and got her money back, but that wasn’t the worst of it.

“I get an email alert that pops up on my phone. It says, ‘Your cruise has been canceled.’ And my heart sank,” the devastated mom recalled to the station.

Paine told the outlet that Carnival said someone had logged into her account and canceled her trip. She suspects the fake rep, who had asked for her booking number, was behind the cancellation.

The sea-sickening scam began when she called a number for what she thought was Carnival about a cabin upgrade and spoke to someone who claimed they were a company rep

“I was in tears. I said, ‘Please, this is Mother’s Day weekend with my kids,’” she said.

But the cruise line couldn’t help her. Her cabin was already rebooked to another customer and the ship was full, leaving Paine marooned at home.

The mom also lost the full $900 cost of the cabin — as the cancellation happened within 15 days of the cruise date, per Carnival’s policy. But she was refunded after NBC 4 LA reached out to the company.

“To come up with $900 for a trip for my kids, it was only feasible by making payments and taking out a loan. So it was a lot of money for me,” she told the local station.

Paine told the outlet that Carnival said someone had logged into her account and canceled her trip. She suspects the fake rep, who had asked for her booking number, was behind the cancelation.

The Post has reached out to Carnival for comment.

“Unfortunately scammers target travelers,” a company rep said in a statement to NBC 4 without sharing any details on Paine’s case.

Paine, who plans to jump on a cruise with her kids later this summer, warned others to watch out for cyber-criminals.

“Nobody is safe from these scams. And they get better and better,” she said.

A Kentucky family fell victim to a similar scenario in May when their $15,000 Carnival vacation was canceled two days before their cruise date.

The couple had accidentally shared their booking number on social media by posting a screenshot of an email with a countdown to the cruise that also listed the number. Someone then used the number to cancel the family’s trip.

Another 'largest cruise' sets sail: Utopia of the Seas offers short, party-packed trips

Portrait of Nathan Diller

  • Royal Caribbean's newest ship, Utopia of the Seas, launched on Friday with short three-and-four-night sailings.
  • The ship will visit Royal Caribbean's private island destination in the Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay, and Nassau.
  • Utopia features several new venues, including Pesky Parrot, a Caribbean take on a tiki bar, and Royal Railway – Utopia Station, an immersive dining experience inside two custom train cars.

On the way back to my cabin on Royal Caribbean International’s newest ship, I stumbled upon a party.

After a long travel day, I figured I’d turn in early on the first night of the cruise. But I followed a crowd of fellow passengers and the siren call of loud music into Utopia of the Seas’ Royal Promenade, where I found myself in the midst of the One Hit Wonders Street Party. As I sang along while members of the Entertainment Activities Team danced to Baha Men’s “Who Let the Dogs Out” – wearing dog ears and tails – I forgot it was a Monday.

On Utopia, the weekend is as much a timeframe as a state of mind. The cruise ship is launching on Friday with short three-and-four-night sailings, a first for the line’s Oasis Class. The line is the second largest cruise ship in the world, after Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas , which launched earlier this year.

“Every Royal Caribbean vacation is about memories,” president and CEO Michael Bayley said during the ship’s naming ceremony during a preview cruise this week. “With Utopia of the Seas, we said, 'Let's make those moments possible for every mood, every weekend and any day of the week.' ”

Here’s what guests can expect.

Where will Utopia of the Seas sail?

The ship – which can accommodate 5,668 guests at double occupancy – will visit Royal Caribbean’s private island destination in the Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay, and Nassau. The three-night sailings will depart on Fridays from Florida’s Port Canaveral, followed by four-night cruises on Mondays.

What’s new on Utopia of the Seas?

The ship is the sixth in the Oasis Class and has the same layout as its predecessors, with eight distinct neighborhoods. However, Utopia features several new venues.

Pesky Parrot, named for an animatronic bird that will perch inside, offers a Caribbean take on a tiki bar in the Royal Promenade. While tiki has typically drawn influence from Polynesian culture , the space is stocked with spirits from the region such as rum from Angostura, based in Trinidad and Tobago. “Obviously with a name like Royal Caribbean, the Caribbean is very, very important to us,” Linken D’Souza, the line’s vice president of food and beverage global operations, said during the cruise.

I tried the Painchiller – a frozen drink made with Bacardi Caribbean Spiced rum, Hard Truth Toasted Coconut rum, piña colada mix and blood orange sour, garnished with a pineapple slice – which served its advertised purpose on a hot, humid evening.

Bayley described the bar's feathered muse as a “drunken parrot” that would serve as both amusing barfly and heckler, cheekily mouthing off at guests. “Because what the hell?” he said during a media briefing. “I mean, you come on vacation, it doesn't need to be serious.” The bird had not yet arrived during the preview cruise, but was expected to in time for the maiden voyage.

Down on Deck 4, the cruise line built a train station – or as close as you’ll find to one on a cruise ship. Royal Railway – Utopia Station offers an immersive dining experience inside two custom train cars, each seating 24 people. Guests can enjoy the scenery from destinations well beyond their planned ports of call courtesy of screens inside window panes, along with themed menus and entertainment. There’s even a classic flipboard outside and a train platform.

The Railway will launch with the 90-minute “Wild West Train Trip.” During a tour of the space, there were vibrations of what felt like train tracks under my feet, while scenes of mountains and cacti flashed in my periphery. At one point, the fictional head engineer directed our attention to an American buffalo running by. The line also invested in custom dishware and Royal Railway gear for actors.

Another more date-night-oriented show centered around the Silk Road is expected to debut in the coming weeks, with plans for more programming in the works.

Pro tip: because of the Railway’s various moving parts – so to speak – punctuality is important. “Once the train departs, there is no boarding the train because it's left the ship and gone on its journey,” said Jay Schneider, chief product innovation officer and senior vice president for the line's parent company Royal Caribbean Group .

Other features debuting on Utopia include The Spare Tire. The grab-and-go snack station – serving Mediterranean veggie wraps, cheese and pepperoni Tornados and more – is housed in what looks like a food truck, conveniently located near the ship’s five pools. The new Solarium Suites also offer 280-degree views at the front of the ship.

Some familiar amenities have been updated, too, like Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar, which is now in a two-story space toward the ship’s aft, and an extended Ultimate Abyss, allowing Royal Caribbean to reclaim the title of the longest dry slide at sea. Riders enter through the mouth of a giant deep-sea fish near the top of the ship before hurtling 10 stories down to the Boardwalk neighborhood.

AQUA80too in the AquaTheater is also a sequel to the previous show AQUA80, with one jaw-dropping acrobatic feat after another timed to music.

What stood out?

The party I attended my first night was not an isolated event. The schedule was packed, from Royal Kappa Chi – which didn’t start until 1 a.m. – where guests can relive their college days with games like flip cup, to the Las Vegas-style PLUNGE daytime pool party.

Other new programming was designed with children in mind, like a parade featuring superhero characters, the Effectors. Parents can enter a lottery through the Adventure Ocean kids club and four kids will win the chance to participate each time.

Christi Coachman, the cruise line’s vice president of entertainment described Utopia as a “taste” of what passengers might experience on a longer cruise.

“It was really important not only to continue to create the family experiences because that's very important for our brand, but also to go in a little bit of a different direction and have one party after the other to where you don't ever stop,” she said.

Not everything is so high-energy, though. One night, I had dinner in the ship's outdoor Central Park neighborhood and listened to live musicians play string renditions of popular songs.

How much does Utopia of the Seas cost?

Prices vary by sailing date, cabin category and other factors, but a three-night cruise departing Oct. 11 currently starts at $943 per person based on double occupancy.

Fares include most food on board, drinks like lemonade and regular coffee and more.

27 cruise ship embarkation day do’s and don’ts

Fran Golden

You've planned your cruise, and now it's embarkation day. You can't wait to get on board your ship and relax, sip a tropical drink and stare out to sea. You're on vacation – woohoo!

Not so fast. You might be ready to cruise, but the ship's crew still is getting the ship ready, having just disembarked last week's passengers.

You must go through the ship's pier-side check-in process, which can take time. Remember, you are one of thousands of people entering a floating city at basically the same time. As with any other secured structure, you can't walk right onto a ship.

The best way to start your cruise is to arrive at the pier expecting some lines and minor hassles — and perhaps a bit of chaos — and then be thrilled if you don't encounter any of them. Keep a level head and look forward to good times once your sailing gets underway.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Here are some dos and don'ts to help make embarkation day as hassle-free as possible.

DO check that you have the necessary paperwork and documentation

The cruise line will send pre-cruise reminders explaining what to expect at check-in, including health and safety procedures. It will outline which documents, IDs, QR codes or other electronic receipts you must have ready.

However, it's your responsibility to arrive at the pier with the proper documentation. I like to print out and bring paper copies of documents as a backup to electronic documents.

Related: Do you need a passport for a cruise?

DON'T arrive at the pier early

Many cruise lines assign passengers a staggered time to arrive at the pier. Arrive early, and you'll just have to wait — often, outside in the hot sun, without access to water, restrooms or other necessities. Arrive at the pier as close as you can to your scheduled time, but don't freak out if you are a few minutes late. You won't be turned away.

DO hand over your big suitcases

cruise ship studio cabin

As soon as you arrive at the pier, porters will be available to take your large suitcases, which will be delivered later to your cabin. (Dock workers expect a small tip for the service.) Without your luggage, you'll have your hands free for the rest of the embarkation process. Make sure your suitcase is tagged with your name and cabin number, ship name and sail date.

DON'T relinquish your carry-on bag

In your cruise carry-on , pack your medications, valuables, documents and anything else you will need until your luggage arrives in your cabin. Since you're likely leaving from a sunny destination, you also might want to have a sun hat, sunscreen and sunglasses. If you've come from a cold-weather place, pack shorts, flip-flops and your bathing suit so you don't have to wait for your suitcases to arrive before you hit the pool.

DO be prepared to go through security

Once you prove (through your paperwork or electronically) that you belong on the ship, you will go through security. The setup is similar to an airport. You put your belongings on a screening belt and walk through a metal detector. You won't have to take off your shoes but will have to remove belts and bulky jewelry and clear your pockets.

DON'T try to sneak any banned items onto the ship

Your carry-on items will be inspected via an X-ray machine at the security checkpoint, and your checked bags might be searched before they're delivered to you. While most cruise lines allow passengers to bring a small amount of alcohol, soda and bottled water for consumption in their cabin, make sure you have not gone over the cruise line's allowance for bringing your own beverages on board .

Cruise lines have specific rules for other banned items, which you can find on your line's website. These items will include weapons, fireworks, flammable liquids, candles, clothing irons, incense and anything else that produces a flame. Royal Caribbean also bans martial arts gear, baby monitors and extension cords, among other items. Carnival bans handcuffs.

DO freshen up

After your flight or drive to the port, you will want to freshen up because the fun begins at the embarkation pier. You'll find both official and unofficial photo spots at the terminal. Smile for the shipboard photographers, who will have a backdrop with the ship's name or picture set up, or take your own photos.

DO pause and look up as you enter the ship's atrium

cruise ship studio cabin

Some ship atriums are impressively high or have cool artwork or chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. You've arrived at your floating home for the week. It's OK to stand in awe.

DON'T expect to be able to go right to your cabin

Depending on when you arrive, cabins might not be ready, as the crew needs to clean and straighten them after the previous guests have left. It's best to stay out of the way of the cabin stewards and instead find a place for you (and your carry-on luggage) to hang out until the ship announces all cabins are ready.

DON'T follow the crowds to the buffet

As the boarding process begins around noon and continues well into the afternoon, many people arrive hungry. Crew members often direct passengers to the buffet — but experienced cruisers know there are other, often less crowded, options.

On Carnival Cruise Line ships, go directly to celebrity chef Guy Fieri's poolside Guy's Burger Joint and indulge in a decadent burger or fries. If you're on one of the newer or recently updated Carnival ships, there's also the embarkation day treat of Fieri's pork butt, chicken and Mac Daddy Mac n Cheese served on the promenade (or Deck 10 on Carnival Sunrise).

Royal Caribbean fans in the know make a beeline to the Park Café for Royal Kümmelweck roast beef sandwiches, an embarkation day rite of passage. A main dining room with waiter service and specialty for-a-fee restaurants also might be alternatives for an embarkation day lunch.

DO head to your cabin when it's ready

Your big bags might not have arrived at this point, but you can drop your carry-ons and take a look to see that everything is to your satisfaction. Your cabin steward likely will stop by to say hello. This is a good time to ask how the air-conditioning, TV and safe work and to ask for any extras you might need, such as more towels, pillows and hangers, or to have the bed split from a queen into two twins. The steward will also let you know how to keep in touch if you need anything extra throughout your cruise.

DO read the safety instructions and check life jackets

Safety instructions will be posted on the back of your cabin door. Look there for the number of your assigned muster station in the event of a shipboard emergency. You'll find life jackets in your closet or elsewhere in the cabin. If you are traveling with kids, now is the time to make sure there is an appropriate infant or child life jacket in addition to a life jacket for each adult. If there isn't, alert your cabin steward.

DO watch the safety video

It used to be that everyone on a cruise ship was required to gather on embarkation day at their assigned muster station, listen to a safety briefing and be checked off a list as having been briefed. As a result of COVID-19, and a desire to keep crowds at a minimum, many cruise lines have moved to e-muster drills.

You are required to watch a video on your cabin TV or cruise line app that tells you what to do in the event of a fire or other shipboard emergency. Your smart TV or app will record that you have watched the video. You may also be required to check in with a crew member at your assigned muster. Those who skip this step will hear their cabin numbers called out over the PA system, which can be embarrassing.

DO make sure the kids understand the safety procedures

Eyes might roll, but now is the time to talk to the kids about the danger of climbing on any railings or standing on balcony furniture. Remind them that other people on the ship are strangers and that they should use the same caution they would at home. Establish rules for how much freedom children are allowed to have on board, where to leave messages for each other and how to reconnect if you get split up on the ship.

DO go out to explore the ship

cruise ship studio cabin

You'll have time to see a lot during your cruise, but at this point I like to get the lay of the land. You might find a ship deck plan (map) in your cabin, or one might be available at the purser's desk or in the cruise line's app. It's fun to find not only the main spaces but also the hidden pools, hot tubs and other treasures you'll want to return to throughout your sailing. It's fun to do the exploring as a family.

DO sign the kids up for cruise ship camp

While you're exploring, stop by the kids' centers and sign the kids up for the onboard kids program . Staff will be on hand to welcome your progeny and show them around the play spaces and hangouts available just for them. Your kids might need to get bracelets marked with their muster station in case of emergency.

DO stop by the spa and fitness center

If you plan to do spa treatments or have hair and other beauty appointments during your cruise, now is the time to book them (if you haven't booked them in advance). Take the spa tour and sign up for the raffle — you could win a free treatment.

If you like what you see in the soothing thermal suite — which typically has hot and cold treatments — sign up now as spaces often sell out. Put your name on signup sheets for fitness classes, as these also fill up quickly.

DO take time to veg out

cruise ship studio cabin

You don't need to do everything your first day, so if you spot a perfect spot in the sun or shade, rest your weary bones. Fun times are ahead; a little cat nap might be in order.

DON'T assume drinks are free

As you wander, especially out on deck, smiling crew members will be carrying trays of tempting and colorful icy drinks, maybe even decorated with sweet little umbrellas. Go ahead and grab one if you want — just understand you will be charged for the welcome drink.

DO watch your alcohol consumption

We get it, you bought a drinks package (in which case the above drink is included), and you want to make the most of it. But do you really want your first day on board to result in an unpleasant morning after? Better to pace yourself and drink lots of water between adult beverages.

DO take time to unpack

Once you've got the lay of the land, you probably want to unpack and get ready for your first evening on board. Don't put your luggage directly on your bed's duvet; use the luggage mat provided. Find a spot for everything because cruise cabins can quickly become cluttered. When you're finished, stow your suitcases under your bed.

DO call if your luggage hasn't arrived

It takes time to deliver thousands of suitcases to thousands of cabins. But if it's getting close to the time your ship is set to leave the pier and your suitcases have not arrived, alert your cabin steward. (If you've had a last-minute cabin change, look for your luggage by your original room.)

DO take your seasickness tablets

If you are prone to seasickness , plan to take your first pills a couple of hours before the ship is scheduled to leave the pier. They need time to kick in.

DO turn off your cellphone

To avoid costly roaming charges, you will want to keep your cellphone on airplane mode. To keep in touch with those at home and brag about your trip on social media, consider buying a shipboard Wi-Fi package . Crew members will be on hand on the first day to help you log in and connect.

DON'T forget to figure out dinner

cruise ship studio cabin

Perhaps you plan to head to the main dining room the first evening or want to go casual at the buffet. Consider the option of specialty dining . These intimate, for-a-fee restaurants can be hard to get into (reservations are required) but are usually not as crowded on the first night of the sailing. Plus, some lines will thank you with a complimentary or discounted bottle of wine.

DO check out the daily program

You'll find a list of all the daily activities printed out in your cabin, on your cabin TV or on the shipboard app. Take a look and see what's in store for your first evening aboard.

DON'T miss the sailaway party

This is the first big activity of your cruise and not to be missed. These parties are about music, laughter and the opportunity to check out the crowd you'll be with for the week. Plus, watching the land disappear as your ship heads to sea is a dreamy experience. You're off to new horizons. Grab a drink and toast the official start of your cruise vacation.

A Snob’s Guide to Spas on Ships

One definition of bliss at sea is padding down a ship’s hallway from your suite to the spa in a robe and slippers. Here’s what awaits.

Photo above: The wellness studio aboard Cunard's Queen Anne—a work-out with oceanic views.

The height of shipboard indulgence is no longer a windowless massage room below deck. Any self-respecting spa at sea now addresses the full gamut of wellness, fitness, and beauty needs: HIIT classes and Pelotons, snow caves and IV lounges, Tibetan singing bowls and quartz treatment beds. And, of course, all manner of fillers, injectables, skin tighteners, and collagen boosters. (As the old adage has it, travel can indeed be transformative.)

But don’t choose a ship purely for its spa. The cruise lines’ spas do differ from one another—but mostly because each line’s architects design them. The latest Celebrity ships—Edge, Apex, Beyond, and Ascent—have beautiful spas designed by Kelly Hoppen. Crystal’s gorgeous Aurora spas are the work of Tillberg Design of Sweden. The Mareel spa on Cunard’s new Queen Anne is by Sybille de Margerie, whose credentials include the Mandarin Oriental in Paris. But everything else—therapists, treatments, products, gadgetry—is managed by a dominant spa concessionaire, the Florida-based OneSpaWorld. (Some exceptions are Ponant, which works with French-owned Sothys; Viking, which uses LivNordic; and newcomer Explora Journeys, which manages its own spa and handpicks its partners.) Still, it’s useful to know what to expect. Here are some of the best spa “concepts” at sea:

Celebrity Cruises

heated loungers in the thermal suite of a celebrity ship

Did you go, er, overboard on a ship’s hospitality? A quick IV infusion of vitamins should turn things around. Celebrity ’s spas, simply called the Spa on its newest ships, have IV lounges offering an especially wide range of potions, promising everything from hangover remedies to detox, slimming, “youthful radiance,” even relief from hot flashes. All very Hollywood.

Explora Journeys

The Ocean Wellness spas on Explora Journeys ' two ships include two private spa “suites,” with their own outdoor relaxation space, and a thermal suite with salt cave, saunas, “ice fall,” and hydrotherapy pool, access to which is gratis, which is not the case on many other ships. There’s also a strong emphasis on fitness, with gym equipment on deck and Pilates reformer classes, which is rare at sea. You can also request a Technogym kit, including resistance bands and a foam roller, for your suite, and use the workout programming on the TV if you prefer to skip the gym.

While it may sound a little woo-woo, a sound bath, part of Seabourn’ s Mindful Living program (in partnership with integrative medicine guru Andrew Weil), is a truly trance-inducing experience. The “singing” of the bowls seems to go right through you, and it leads to deep relaxation. “Mindful living,” which permeates the ethos of the spa and many of the exercise classes, also extends ashore, with “healthy” excursions, such as a forest-breathing hike in Corsica, or al fresco yoga atop Santorini’s caldera.

In keeping with its Scandinavian roots, Viking has Swedish brand LivNordic 0perating its award-winning spas. (It's part of Raison d’Etre, which works with hotel groups such as Aman Resorts, Four Seasons, and Kempinski.) A must is the Nordic bathing circuit in Viking’s thermal suite, which goes something like this: sauna, cold plunge, back to sauna, snow grotto, sauna again, repeat. You’ll feel remarkably invigorated—provided you don’t skimp on the cold plunge and snow grotto parts.

Cunard's Queen Anne

Cunard has teamed up with Harper’s Bazaar UK to create three wellness “journeys” in the new ship’s Mareel spa. Expect, over the course of three days, a combo of Elemis products (what the OneSpaWorld concessionaire supplies), spa treatments, and nutritional recommendations. Queen Anne 's Detox Journey includes hot and cold treatments, a salt stone massage, a cryo sculpting session, and a flower detox wrap. There are low-alcohol, almost guilt-free cocktails throughout the ship, too. (Kombucha Bellini, anyone?)

Crystal Cruises

Crystal’ s Aurora spa offers LED light therapy, said to reduce inflammation, improve skin texture, even reset your circadian rhythms, and long-lasting but noninvasive Thermage, which smooths and tightens skin and increases collagen production. (Downside of doing something like Thermage on a cruise? You may want to stay out of the sun after.) The Elemis Biotec facial, also available, will do wonders in the short term. But it all does speak to the growing seriousness of spas on cruise ships—and the appeal of going home “new."

The Rules of Spa-ing at Sea

These hacks will help you navigate.

Sample the Products Ships sometimes offer a chance to try out the spa’s unguents early on in the cruise, or even get a mini-treatment. It’s worth it, despite the inevitable heavy sell. Book Treatments in Advance That way you can plan your days. No point scheduling a soothing body wrap before a six-hour onshore excursion in the Mediterranean heat. Consider a “Spa Suite” Celebrity Cruises’ Aqua Sky Suites, part of the Retreat enclave, give you access to the Sea Thermal Suite, a scented spa haven. Regent’s top-tier Regent Suite has its own spa. Snap Up Appointments on Port Days There will be last-minute deals when everyone has gone ashore. Chances are you’ll have the ship’s thermal suite—hot tubs, whirlpools, saunas, showers—to yourself before and after treatment. Book Way Ahead for Sea Days With no one distracted by time ashore, spas are busiest. But carefully consider the time slots you want: A massage before dinner is rarely a good idea (think wild hair covered in essential oils). Anticipate Formal Nights Onboard dress-up occasions are preceded by a flurry of primping: blow-drys, mani-pedis, facials. If you’re planning on going all out for the captain’s cocktails, book your salon appointment early. Beware “Lose Inches Immediately” Treatments Many ships offer Ionithermie, a quick fix. But if you see results, “they’ll only last 12 to 18 hours,” per the American Academy of Dermatology.
