Journey - Don't Stop Believin'

In this video.

Here's how to play the classic song Don't Stop Believin' by Journey where we cover all the electric guitar parts including the solo!

My tutorial was heavily influenced by watching this video where Neal Schon demos exactly how he plays it with clear close ups - what a guitarist! When he plays the fast solo and says "that's all it is".. come on Neal! Anyway, I did my best with this one, hope some of you guys can nail it!

7 Level Guitar Ad

Welcome to my Don’t Stop Believin’ chord chart and guitar lesson by Journey. This is a great song and how can you not sing along, right?

We obviously won’t be getting into the insane guitar solos that go along with this, but we will be going over some fun ways to strum along to this crowd pleaser.

We are going to be playing this version using a Capo on the 4th fret . This will keep us in the key of E without having to worry about that crazy B barre chord. We still have to contend with the F barre chord. You can always used a power chord or an Fmaj7 chord. But…if you like barre chords, go for it!

Let’s get into it!

Don’t Stop Believin’ Guitar Lesson – Journey

journey don't stop believin electric guitar

It's enduring appeal comes from it's great sing along chorus and cool guitar lines throughout. In this Don't Stop Believin' guitar lesson we will take quick look at the chords and riffs as well as the catchy guitar solo as played by the great Neal Schon.

At the beginning of the first lesson I will show you what Neal Schon plays during the intro section of the song including that fast picking sequence.

From there we make it to the verse which contains a lot of palm muted open string rhythms interspersed with close voiced triads high up the fretboard. There is a lot of guitar layering going on here as well as keyboard chords so it can be difficult to exactly recreate what is going on here with just one guitar. I used the way Neal Schon performs the part live as a guide.

After the quick little transition riff we get to the main riff of the song which is the song's chorus. This singalong part has been played by countless guitar players. However, most of them don't finger this riff exactly the Neal Schon does it. In this lesson you will learn his exact fingerings and chord voicings. Some of them are very unique. 🙂

The solo for Don't Stop Believin', which I teach in the second video lesson, is rather short and except for the very beginning, consists of only highly melodic and singable guitar parts that compliment the song perfectly.

To start the solo we do have some very quick ascending hammer-ons, but after that you can just lay back and let the notes sing. That isn't to say the rest of the solo is easy. In reality, keeping all of those half step bends perfectly in tune can be a challenge.

You really have to use you ear and listen closely to every note to make sure it stays perfectly in tune. The bend at the end of the solo requires you to take the same note and bend it both a half step and a whole step. This can be quite tricky to perform well.

As with anything else on the guitar, take your time mastering those bends. While practicing each individual section, I find it a good practice technique to perform each phrase without bends first. I simply replace the bends with the actual notes that we are trying to bend to. For instance, if it is a half-step bend you are practicing, just play the string normally but one fret up from the bend. That will give you the actual sound you are aiming for. So you will play the phrase through once with no bends then go through it again trying to match all of those pitches exactly but this time with bends. After that, just keep repeating that same phrase just like that until you feel you have it nailed.

Neal Schon is no stranger to writing solos that become instant classics. I mean seriously, the guy has such a knack for creating highly singable, exciting and memorable solos that fit each song perfectly. Even though this solo to "Don't Stop Believin'" is short, that doesn't stop (pun intended) him from creating another classic within those short confines.

Any study of Neal Schon's playing is usually fantastic for learning how to construct a solo that will tell it's own story, perfectly compliment the song and still have lots of flashy guitar licks to sink your teeth into.

That's about it from me today. See you guys soon!

Def Leppard, Journey take over Comerica Park for 35,000 as stadium tour hits Detroit

Portrait of Brian McCollum

Comerica Park got a big dose of ‘80s rock energy as about 35,000 fans piled into the Detroit ballpark Thursday night for a doubleheader from Def Leppard and Journey.

The potent pair — two of that era’s enduring hitmakers — were joined by another classic rock radio staple, Steve Miller Band, for a long, festive and sonically diverse blast of music on a pleasant summer night downtown.

Detroit was just the fifth night on Def Leppard and Journey’s Summer Stadium Tour, but the show is already a well-oiled machine, which is little surprise given the long, deep touring pedigrees of the two co-headliners.

Def Leppard closed the evening with a finely tuned 1½-hour set of Union Jack-stamped hard rock, a signature wall of sound layered with sheets of vocal harmonies, squalling guitars and unapologetic pop hooks. It’s an approach meant for a big setting like CoPa, and the flashy visual accompaniment on the centerfield stage drove home the point.

Vocalist Joe Elliott, now sporting an august white mane, led the proceedings flanked by his singing compatriots Phil Collen (guitar), Vivian Campbell (guitar) and Rick Savage (bass), with drummer Rick Allen typically merry and thunderous back at the kit.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Thursday night featured significantly more material from 1983’s “Pyromania” album than the band’s last Comerica Park visit, a 2022 tour stop with Motley Crue. That included fiery album opener “Rock! Rock! (Till You Drop),” which also kicked off Thursday’s set. The time trip continued soon with a thick “Foolin’” and the deep cut “Comin’ Under Fire” — never played live until this tour — with the record’s milestone tracks, “Rock of Ages” and “Photograph,” closing the regular set.

There was plenty of music pulled from that album’s multiplatinum follow-up, 1987’s more polished “Hysteria,” full of chart-scaling hits such as “Armageddon It,” “Animal” and “Love Bites,” which served as instant crowd-pleasers at Comerica Park, with a rippling “Hysteria” and sticky “Pour Some Sugar on Me” saved for the encore.

One new number — the stomping, glam-touched “Just Like ’73,” a nod to band members’ formative music years — was tucked into the blend, while a quick riff by Elliott on Kiss’s “Detroit Rock City” launched an unplugged-style session at the edge of the stage’s runway.

Journey delivered its own polished and hits-filled performance, grounded by expressive playing from guitarist Neal Schon and cinematic keys from Jonathan Cain, who occasionally left his grand piano to handle rhythm guitar on songs such as “Keep on Runnin’.”

Sixteen years into his tenure as Journey front man, Philippines-born Arnel Pineda looks all the part of a seasoned pro, energetically working the stage in an unmissable azure blue suit. At 56, he spent much of the show seamlessly swooping to the top of his high tenor, though signs of vocal fatigue crept in as the 90-minute set wound on.

Offering a tribute to members of the armed forces, Cain said he was “send(ing) this song like a prayer” as he launched into “Faithfully,” one of the slew of hits Thursday that ranged from the band’s stock-in-trade soaring ballads (“Open Arms”), yearning midtempo fare (“Only the Young”) and pulsing rockers (“Wheel in the Sky”), with room carved out for guitar and piano solos by Schon and Cain.

The extended jam of “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’” prompted a sea of swaying arms and a chorus of “nah-nah-nah-nah’s” while “Lights” drew a stadium full of illuminated cellphones and, in a 2024 anachronism, a fair share of old-fashioned lighters.

A show that started in daylight was headed toward sunset by the time Jonathan Cain’s seesawing keyboard lick launched Journey’s set closer, “Don’t Stop Believin’,” which at a place like Comerica Park is just a build of anticipation for the song’s second verse. Sure enough, Pineda handed vocal duties over to the crowd for mass belting-out: “born and raised in south Detroit !”

Steve Miller Band opened the evening with a likable, punchy 55-minute set of hits that stretched back to Miller’s late-’60s breakthrough, “Living in the U.S.A.,” and much of his greatest-hits repertoire (“Fly Like an Eagle,” “Take the Money and Run,” “Jet Airliner”).

Ahead of 1977’s “Serenade,” the silver-haired guitarist-singer paused early on for a dedication to Eminem, who recently landed his biggest hit in a decade with “Houdini,” built in part around an interpolation of Miller’s 1982 track “Abracadabra.” The Detroit rapper’s single has enjoyed big chart success, Miller pointed out, "just like Abracadabra’ … all around the world."

The Summer Stadium Tour will roll on through September. A note for fans in other markets: In Detroit, Steve Miller Band went on promptly at 6 p.m., Journey at 7:30 p.m. and Def Leppard at 9:30 p.m.

Clinton 1992 campaign song 'Don't Stop' makes RNC appearance

Closing out JD Vance's first speech as Trump's vice presidential nominee Wednesday, Sixwire performed an instrumental version of Fleetwood Mac's 'Don't Stop,' a song used in Democrat Bill Clinton's 1992 campaign and featured prominently during that election season.

"I want to say how honored I am to honor the band whose famous song Don’t Stop has been played for me more than Hail to the Chief," Clinton said during a MusicCares Person of the Year celebration honoring the band in 2018 .

What to know about the RNC band?

According to the band's website , Sixwire are known as a house-band on USA Network’s "Nashville Star," Fox’s "Next Great American Band", CMT’s "Next Superstar", and ABC’s dramatic series “Nashville”. They’ve performed at Super Bowls 51, 54 and 56, The Daytona 500, the NHL All-Star Game, and were ESPN’s first-ever “house band” for the 2019 NFL Draft held in Nashville.

Portrait of Joyce Orlando

The Nashville band Sixwire has kept the jams coming throughout the Republican National Convention and came into the spotlight after Day 1 in Milwaukee, Wis.

Sixwire, advertised as the "'go-to' guys for television" according to the  band's website , brought out the "dad jams" this week, but gained further recognition when a teleprompter issue while House Speaker Mike Johnson was speaking gave them some more airtime. The issue also came with some  ribbing on social media  with how long the band had to play, especially with a longer-than-average rendition of Cheap Trick's "I Want You to Want Me."

Members Andy Childs (lead vocals, guitar), Steve Hornbeak (keyboards, vocals), John Howard (bass guitar), Steve Mandile (guitar, vocals) and Chuck Tilley (drums, percussion), continued to keep those "dad jams" coming and accompanied other scheduled performances.

Here's a look at what they've played over the last week of the RNC.

Clinton's 1992 campaign song 'Don't Stop' makes RNC appearance

Closing out JD Vance's first speech as Trump's vice presidential nominee Wednesday, Sixwire performed an instrumental version of Fleetwood Mac's "Don't Stop," a song used in Democrat Bill Clinton's 1992 campaign and featured prominently during that election season.

"I want to say how honored I am to honor the band whose famous song Don’t Stop has been played for me more than Hail to the Chief," Clinton said during a MusicCares Person of the Year celebration honoring the band in 2018 .

He went on to tell a story of how it became the campaign song:

"June of 1991, I flew to Los Angeles, I was the governor of Arkansas and I was thinking about running for president…and this bright-eyed 19-year-old picked me up to drive me to my speech," he said. "He looked at me and said, ‘You gonna run? I think you should, and if you do, this ought to be your campaign theme song.’ And he flipped a Fleetwood Mac tape in, and played Don’t Stop. And my first reaction wasn't, ‘Oh, that's perfect,’ it was, ‘You weren't alive when this song was made!’ And he said, ‘I know, but this song was made for today.’"

"And it was, and they let me use it as a theme song, and I've been trying to live by it ever sense," he said, according to USA TODAY.
